Cut timber on the old McKenzie Jetty Fraser Island.

Fraser Island was used by Europeans as a major disembarkation point for new settlers heading to the Maryborough region. Logging commenced in 1860 of predominantly Satinay, Kauri Pine, Brush Box, Cypress, Blackbutt and Tallowood. With the timber industry came bullocks, horses, sawmills, homes, a school and a jetty.

Early shot of Urangan Boat Harbour before dredging and the marina berths where completed.

fraser island

About K’gari (Fraser Island) • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Fraser island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presume it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death of Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

Caution crossing creeks

Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

Experiencing online abuse? Advice is available for parents of young as well as adults who may be experiencing online abuse. Some examples of cyberbullying include: • hurtful or abusive messages • creating fake accounts in someone’s name to trick or humiliate • spreading nasty rumours or lies about someone • sharing photos of someone to make fun of them or humiliate What to do: Resist the urge to respond to any hate targeted at you online, it usually just makes it worse. Screenshot evidence: Before you block or delete, make sure you screenshot. If you’ve seen or been the target of mean or nasty stuff online, your immediate reaction might be to make it disappear, but it’s really important you keep evidence of it. Easter: More than chocolate The Easter festival, the oldest and most important festival in the Christian calendar, culminates in the celebration that is Easter Sunday, which today is a time when most of us get together with our families, share a meal and - of course eat lots of chocolate! Most people know that it was on this day that Jesus was said to come to life after being crucified, visiting his friends and followers once more. At Easter time Christians remember the last week of Jesus' life, or ‘Holy Week'. It signals the end of Lent, the traditional time of fasting in the Christian calendar. Easter is the day when we celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Jesus is the Son of God and heroically gave His life to die for our sins. On the third day after He died -- the day we now celebrate as Easter Sunday -- His friends went to His grave, and found that He had risen from the dead. They saw an angel who told them, “Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as He said it would happen." Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; now He offers to you the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins. This is the true story of Easter, and how it can change your life. Christians today often commemorate Good Friday by attending a service, where Jesus' last hours on earth are retraced. As Good Friday is seen as a day of mourning, services are very solemn; churches are left unadorned with flowers or similar decorations, and in some churches pictures and statues are covered over.

Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats & foxes and their other natural predators, also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is noted bird-watch area and visitors come • Male Variegated Fairywren from around the world and interstate just to see them. • Photos supplied courtesy of John Knight

Unique & historical architecture Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door.

Ghosts from 19th Century The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, you'll hear noises in the middle of the night. From the 1840's to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's East coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders and Oxley had charted the coastline but the arrival of E.T. Aldridge and his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool and other primary produce and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. The Wharf precinct still has many of its original buildings.

Where the reef begins

Best known for its iconic rum and turtles, Bundaberg is one of the gems of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Our region is bursting with flavour boasting locally produced drinks and home-grown food from its rich soil. Adventure here begins on land and extends to the sea, the reef and beyond. Start your escape by exploring our coastal gems, lakes gorges and rural landscape before heading to our shores where hundreds of sea turtles return to the beach each year to nest. Later on their hatchlings will begin their journey to the ocean. Early November – late March. The waters of the Coral Coast are a proven snorkelling, fishing and diving paradise follow suit, and take the plunge. In Bundaberg you will find a vibrant and creative city centre - be sure to take in an exhibition at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, Sample the thriving restaurant and café scene. Don't miss Botanical gardens attractions, Bundaberg Rum Distillery has educational guided tours & tastings at the headquarters for a stalwart Australian brand of rum, Hills St, Bundaberg East.

Since 1888 when the Bundaberg Distillery was born, Bundaberg Rum and its home in Bundaberg has played a significant role in Australian culture. The Bundaberg Rum Distillery , Australia’s most-awarded rum distillery, opened the doors to a new $8.5million Visitor Experience in August 2016, showcasing over 130 years of rich Australian spirit. Recently voted Australia’s best Brewery, Winery or Distillery Experience at the 2018 Australian Tourism Awards, the Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience is an attraction to tick off your bucket list. The Museum Experience Inside the Museum's self-guided tour, six 75,000 litre oak vats, that have previously matured thousands of litres of Bundaberg's finest rums, have been emptied and rebuilt, allowing visitors to walk through them in a unique sensory experience that showcases the proud and rich history behind Australia's favourite rum.

Car fuel saving tips $

$

$

1. Drive economically Around town, you’ll use less fuel if you: Drive smoothly and try to maintain a steady speed. Manual, change up through the gears as soon as practical. Automatic, ease back slightly on the accelerator once at speed. Avoid peak hour and other heavy traffic where possible. Avoid engine idling for long periods.

On the freeway, you’ll use less fuel if you: Reduce speed - you can reduce your fuel consumption by as much as 25% by taking 20 km/h off your speed. Use cruise control if you’ve got it. Use your car’s air conditioner sparingly. Keep windows up and use the ventilation system when travelling over about 50 km/h, if your car doesn’t have air conditioning. If your car’s transmission has power and economy modes, use the economy mode to ensure the transmission up-shifts earlier. This also helps reduce wear and tear on your car’s brakes, tyres and the other mechanical parts. Saves on running costs too.

2. Service your car regularly Keep the engine correctly tuned. Keep filters in good condition. Keep the fuel and ignition systems in good working order. Regularly change the engine oil using the correct grade of oil.

3. Inflate tyres correctly Check your tyre pressure once a week, when the tyres are cold. Keep tyres inflated to a pressure slightly higher than that stated in the vehicle handbook, find the tyre pressure on the tyre placard, which is typically inside the glove box, on the driver’s door or on the fuel filler flap. Setting the tyre pressure slightly higher will aid in fuel economy and safer handling.

4. Check the wheel alignment Ensure the wheel alignment is correctly set and the brakes aren’t dragging, as increase rolling resistance will use more fuel.

5. Check your load If you can, reduce the amount of gear in your car. Things like golf clubs and toolboxes add unnecessary weight, which in turn increases fuel consumption. External attachments ie: roof racks will increase wind resistance and fuel use. If possible remove them when not in use; and when you are using them, load carefully to minimise wind resistance.

Going Straight ahead. You can approach without signalling. But:

Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:

Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.

Turning left. Here's the way to do it. Approach the roundabout in the left lane or line of traffic. Then:

Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:

Signal left before you exit the roundabout. The same rule applies if you intend driving beyond the right turn exit.

That's not the rule. You must give way to any vehicles already on the roundabout before you enter. It doesn't matter if a car is on your left or on your right.

Towing safety tips

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your car's handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the car's mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your car's handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move. Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it. * Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc.) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly. * Suspension - Towing puts extra strain on a car's suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing. * Reversing - There are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner. When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears.
