Great things to see

Fraser Coast is a popular playground for tourists all year round because of its mild climate, with K’gari (Fraser Island) just off the coast of Hervey Bay. Separating mainland from Fraser Island is the 70 kms of the Great Sandy Strait. It extends south to Inskip Point, with numerous named and unnamed islands. The famous & historic Urangan Pier - it's one of the longest in Australia and in March 2017, Urangan pier saw its 100 years since rst completed. It stretches for almost 1km into the ocean where you can stroll and spot marine and bird life or look back at 14 km of the Bay’s foreshore. It is a good platform for shing in all conditions. The Mary and Susan River enters the strait at River Heads and is also the barge landing access point to the Island. Set aside a day and join the Spirit of Hervey Bay’s popular Mary River Cruise that twists & turns its

way down the mighty Mary, right through to Maryborough township from Urangan Harbour Whales can be encountered, (Jul - Oct) and the whale watching eet also departs from the Urangan Boat Harbour, which is the location for some of the best holiday accommodation in the region such as Ramada, with either studio, 1 or 2 bedroom apartments. Whale cove offers a variety of modern, self-contained one & two bedroom apartments. You can dine at the Harbour, la carte, specialty coffee, quick meal or a decadent dessert overlooking the Hervey Bay marina, across the Strait to the Islands and much moreat the Hervey Bay Boat Club They also have Fraser Getaway cruise, a 3hr tour from Hervey Bay along the West coast of the Island. If sailing is your thing, Blue Dolphin Marine Tours offer eco-friendly sailing tours across Hervey Bay and the

islands. On their tour, you may spot dolphins, turtles, dugongs, seabirds & other marine life. not far from the Pier Combining his passion for the ocean and marine life with his skills as a jeweller, Nick launched the Ocean Collection in an effort to raise awareness and cultivate a greater love for threatened marine species. 1770 LARC! TOURS NEW MILESTONES

Tourism business 1770 LARC! Tours has achieved two significant milestones in 2022. Midyear, the amphibious day tour business proudly reached 20 years of Eco Tourism Australia certification. Local owner & operator Neil Mergard was in fact the first tourism business in Central QLD to become eco certified back in 2002 and he is very proud of the ongoing commitment his business and the 1770 LARC! Tours’ team members continue to effect. The second marvellous milestone is that for two successive years 1770 LARC! Tours has won Bronze in the ‘Tour and Transport Operators’ category at the Queensland Tourism Awards. The category of ‘Tour and Transport Operators’ is one of the most hotly contested of the state awards and the whole 1770 LARC! Tours team are ecstatic with winning Bronze two years in a row Neil was on hand at the recent Awards ceremony to personally collect the accolade, and in his usual enthusiastic nature, Neil said “I’m so proud of the whole LARC team and their dedication to business excellence. Receiving this Award two years in a row recognises their consistency and passion. “Plus, there are thousands of guests we are also very appreciative of – ever since the business was established in May 1994, we’ve been supported by guest referrals, so keep on LARCing!” MORE: Amber Rodgers, marketing manager; Email: amber@1770larctours.com au Ph: 0409 983 702

New solution in makeup

Microblading, also known as eyebrow embroidery, microstroking, feather touch and hair stokes is a relatively new method of permanent makeup that provides a means to partially or fully camouage missing eyebrow hair with the appearance of simulated hair using ne deposits of cosmetic tattoo pigments.

Microblading is performed by manually depositing pigment supercially in the upper region of the dermis with the use of a hand tool with attached needles fused together to create a blade, it does not involve the use of a machine. The Microblading technique involves drawing individual, crisp hair strokes that can be very natural looking but nonetheless Microblading is still a form of cosmetic tattooing. Microblading needle groupings contain needles that are extremely ne in diameter in comparison to the needles used in traditional methods. Microblading is for any person wanting to perfect and create perfect brows. Microblading is a great alternative for pre and/or post chemo clients and alopecia clients, who will or have lost their eyebrows. Microblading’s ability to closely resemble real hair provides a very natural looking replacement to sparse or non-existent brows.

Include wine & spirit bottles

Queenslands popular containers for change program could soon be expanded to include glass wine and spirit bottles to ramp up recycling, put money back into the pockets of Queenslanders and charities, and protect the state’s environment and great lifestyle.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Queensland Government would soon gauge the communities views on growing the scheme, which has already seen more than 5.5 billion containers recycled through refund points and $540 million in refunds issued since it was launched in 2018. “It’s stopped billions of containers from ending up in our waterways and environment, thrown millions of dollars behind local groups and supported upwards of 800 good jobs at 359 facilities across the state.” Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said. Before the introduction of containers for change program, only 18 per cent of beverage containers were recovered and recycled. “Today, that number has grown threefold to 65 per cent.”

Currently, the program accepts most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and 3L. “Of course we want to make sure the decision to expand the scheme to include wine and spirit bottles is one that is backed by the community, so we’ll be going out next month to Queenslanders to get their feedback.” Consultation is expected to launch in December and run through to February 2023.

Australia's most liveable climate

Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats, foxes and their other natural predators. Also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is a noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. Birdwatchers meet regularly. Unique & historical architecture

Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door.

The early times in Maryborough

Evidence of human inhabitation of the Maryborough region stretches back to at least 6,000 years ago. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) & Batjala (Butchulla) people were the original inhabitants of the region. Gubbi were described as an inland tribe of the Wide Bay–Burnett area. The Batjala occupied the more coastal regions including K’gari (Fraser Island). In 1842, Andrew Petrie & Henry Stuart Russell sailed up the river known to the Gubbi as the Monoboola (now the Mary River) looking for land and timber to exploit. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders & Oxley had charted the coastline, but the arrival of Edgar T. Aldridge & his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool &other primary produce, and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. Early Maryborough economy was centred around livestock farming, logging of the bunya pine forests, and the boiling down of animal carcasses to make tallow In the late 1850's the soil along the Mary River was deemed ideal for the cultivation of sugarcane and in 1859 E. T. Aldridge was able to grow & produce a world-class experimental crop. From the 1840's to well after 1900, Maryborough & Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) & others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night.

Maryborough, named after the wife of Governor Fitzroy, was settled 1847. It was a major immigration port into Australia and is one of Queensland’s oldest cities.

a rural town, is 60 km west of Hervey Bay and on the Bruce Highway north-west of Maryborough. There are 23 buildings in Churchill Street that are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. The towns Visitor Centre is located in the Palace Building which was destroyed by a fire in 2000 and subsequently rebuilt in honour of the 15 backpackers who died in the fire upstairs. A single A4 Heritage walk sheet which combines a map of the town (most of the historic buildings are located on Churchill Street) is available to pick up & upstairs is an Art Gallery. Trees that line the main street or Bruce Hwy are Brazilian Leopard Trees. As a National Trust Town, it provides opportunities for visitors to explore the regions interesting past. It’s well worth a stop in whilst travelling on your way

Fraser Island

Fraser Island is K’gari

Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise

Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef.

Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide

Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser

Towing safety tips

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working.

* Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job?

* Trailer or tow bar weights - check your cars handbook for the maximum weights allowed

* Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the cars mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars

* Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your cars handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too

* Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard.

* Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights

* Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturers recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it

* Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc ) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly

* Suspension - towing puts extra strain on a cars suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing

* Reversing - there are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem to be a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears

Zero emission vehicles

Zero emission vehicles deliver a wide range of environmental, economic and social benets. When compared with internal combustion engine vehicles, zero emission vehicles save users on ongoing refuelling, vehicle maintenance and registration costs. All zero emission vehicles tested in the last 5 years received a 5-star safety rating from the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

There are 2 types of zero emission vehicles:

•Battery electric vehicles (BEV)

•powered by an electric motor only

•produce no direct tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions

•fully zero emission when powered by renewable energy

•energy stored in a battery

•typical driving range 300-600km

•the battery is charged by using external chargers and regenerative braking (kinetic energy captured during braking) to charge the battery

emission vehicle but could be considered a suitable alternative to an internal combustion engine vehicle when used mainly on battery power.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is not eligible for $3000 rebate

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles:

•are partly powered by an electric motor/s (charged by a wall socket or specialised charger)

•have an internal combustion engine (petrol, diesel, or biofuel)

•the internal combustion engine is primarily used to generate electricity to recharge the battery or to extend driving range for longer trips

•have a lower electric-only driving range than battery electric vehicles

•overall driving range of 500-700km, with a full electric driving range of up to 60km.

Vehicle registration duty savings in Queensland

Hybrid or electric vehicles attract the lowest vehicle registration duty costs - get an estimate for vehicle registration duty costs:

•see the Queensland Electric Super Highway for on the go charging options.

•Hydrogen vehicles or fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)

•emerging market technology

•produce no direct tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions

•refuel at hydrogen refuelling stations

•more suitable for heavy vehicles

•fully zero emission when powered by renewable hydrogen

•typical driving range of 300-600km.

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is not a zero

Changes surrounding pet consent

“Property managers around the state would of had the 1 October 2022 marked in their calendars and REIQ members have been readying their processes for many months for the new rental laws that come into effect,” REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said. “One of the major changes is surrounding pet consent. Although tenants will have increased rights when it comes to pets, consent for pets is still required, and tenants still need to seek the property owners permission to keep a pet on the premises. “However, from 1 October, property owners can no longer simply have a blanket ‘no-pet’ policy, and instead, property owners will be required by law to consider pet requests on a case-by-case basis. “Property owners will only be able to refuse a pet request if they can establish one of the prescribed grounds available under the new laws, such as if the premises doesn’t have a fence or facilities to humanely accommodate the pet, or if keeping the pet is likely to cause costly damage to the premises or inclusions and the repair cost would likely exceed the rental bond being held.

“The property owner also needs to respond to the pet request in writing within the statutory time frame of 14 days, or consent will be deemed. Further, if the property owners negative response does not align with the available grounds to decline the request, approval may be deemed under the laws.”

Prescribed grounds for saying no to a pet request:

•Keeping the pet would exceed a reasonable number of animals being kept at the premises.

•The premises are unsuitable for keeping the pet because of a lack of appropriate fencing, open space or another thing necessary to humanely accommodate the pet.

•Keeping the pet is likely to cause damage to the premises or inclusions that could not practicably be repaired for a cost of the rental bond for the premises.

•Unacceptable risk to the health and safety of a person. For example a venomous pet.

•Keeping the pet would contravene a law.

•Keeping the pet would contravene a body corp by-law.

•Tenant/s is/are not prepared to consent to a condition.

Pet approval conditions examples:

•If pet is not a type of pet ordinarily kept inside—a condition requiring the pet to be kept outside at the premises.

•If pet is capable of carrying parasites that could infest the premises—a condition requiring the premises to be professionally fumigated at the end of the tenancy.

•If pet is allowed inside the premises—a condition requiring carpets in the premises to be professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy.
