A world of unique treasures awaits Looking for a locally-made memento of your trip to the Fraser Coast or a unique gift to bring back to family and friends? You can’t go any further than World Treasure Designs, a jewellery studio in Urangan focussed on making jewellery with a difference. Their exclusive designs are locally inspired and locally made, featuring Australian gemstones and sustainably sourced metals. Everything is carefully handcrafted, from design sketch to final stone setting, right here in their Hervey Bay workshop. Inspired by the abundant marine life of our beautiful Fraser Coast, World Treasure’s unique Ocean Collection features humpback whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, rays and more. Several of the designs feature Nala, Hervey Bay’s very own and much loved iconic humpback whale. Recognizable by her distinctive
tail, Nala has been sighted in the Bay for over 20 years now and her life journey is celebrated throughout the range of jewellery. With six trade qualified jewellers, designers and specialty setters on premises, the workshop also specialises in custom handmade jewellery, special orders and jewellery and watch repairs. A special commitment to the environment is shown through the use of recycled precious metals, eco-friendly packaging and their new solar-powered workshop. A portion of every sale is donated towards environmental causes meaning your purchase helps to protect and preserve our beautiful planet for future generations. This is jewellery you can feel good about wearing. Located at 32 King St, near the Urangan pier, shop hours are Mon-Fri from 9:00 am - 4:30pm and Saturdays from 9:00am - 12:30pm.

Whales migrate from April to November Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a Summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth. The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from April to August and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres. The exact timing of the
migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground. At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is not the largest whale found in Australian waters. This species was once only valued dead — mainly for its oil and baleen, or ‘whalebone’. Beginning in Australia shortly after European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry. Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations, which one was believed to be at
Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park. The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats made commercial whaling so efficient that many whale species came very close to extinction. When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, killing approximately 8300 off the east coast between 1949 and 1962 until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963. It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly a little over 100 individuals.
Preferred area for Winter
Probable feeding areas Breeding Areas
Hervey Bay is a unique winter stopover ground for the migratory parade of Humpback whales. It is believed the calm, shallow, protected waters of the Bay is a preferred area for yearlings, sub-adult (sexually immature whales), followed by mature females in late August, and then we begin to see mothers with newborn calves in Sept-Oct. By mid-September the mature males have found the Bay, and the waters come alive with their haunting songs. The arrival of the males, also means increased activity with males competing with one another for access to females. This means more aerial activity such as breaching (leaping nearly out of the water), and many head, tail and flipper displays. Hervey Bay’s the only area in the world where humpbacks consistently approach vessels. The curious humpbacks of Hervey Bay provide some of the most unusual and prolonged encounters with humans. These ‘muggings' are very unusual outside of the Bay and have made whalewatches in the Bay legendary. Even if you have watched whales elsewhere, nothing compares to watching the curious humpback whales of Hervey Bay.

The Bay’s other Whales Antarctic Minke Whale Bryde's Whales is more robust than the other large rorquals (large baleen whales). The rostrum of the Antarctic Minke Whale is very narrow and pointed, with a single ridge on the head. The maximum length of Antarctic Minke Whales appears to be around 9.8 m. They are not gregarious and tend to swim alone or in pairs, large feeding groups of up to 400 individuals may form. Minke whales are known to be curious, often approaching boats from a distance. Antarctic Minke Whales probably do not migrate as far north as Dwarf Minke Whales, but this species does undergo extensive migration between the summer Antarctic feeding grounds and winter subtropical to tropical breeding grounds. Mature Antarctic Minke Whales feed primarily on the Antarctic Krill. www.environment.gov.au
Pilot Whales have a robust body with a thick tail stock. The dorsal fin is wide, broad based, falcate and set well forward on the body. Occurring in tropical and warmtemperate waters world-wide. The Long-finned Pilot Whale is widely recorded in colder waters off southern Australia. The Short-Finned Pilot Whale reaches physical maturity at approximately 17 years and is more than 5 m in length, a maximum age of 46 years. While females are smaller at 4.8 m and reach 63 years. Feeding mainly on squid, cuttlefish, octopus and some fish. www.environment.gov.au

are the second smallest of the baleen whales. The rostrum is V-shaped but has three parallel ridges between the blowhole and nostril tip. And can grow to 14.6 m (males) or 15.6 m (females). Bryde's Whales are not gregarious and mostly swim alone or in pairs. Bryde's Whales are considered to be a fairly opportunistic feeder, readily consuming whatever shoaling prey is available, such as pilchard, anchovy, sardine, mackerel, herring and other schooling fish. www.environment.gov.au
Southern Right Whales are large baleen whales with a less streamlined shape than balaenopterids, like Humpback Whales. They grow to a maximum length of 17.5 m and weight of 80 t, with mature females often slightly larger than males. The majority of are uniformly black in colour, no dorsal fin. Thought to be solitary during migration, or accompanied by a dependent calf or occasionally a yearling offspring. They form large groups in breeding areas, these have been recorded in the coastal waters of all Australian states with the exception of the Northern Territory. Krill is a major food source and require adequate supplies of food to accumulate energy reserves that is essential for migration and breeding. Depletion of krill through over harvesting may be a potential future threat for the Australian population of Southern Right Whales. www.environment.gov.au

The old Urangan Pier Originally built for the export of sugar, timber and coal, it was used for the transfer of cargo between ships and rail along the extension of the railway line from Pialba. Construction on the Urangan Pier began in 1913 & completed 1917 with a length of 1124m to reach the deep water channel. The Urangan railway line also began construction in 1913. This line was extended along the Urangan Pier as it was being constructed. Complete with 2 x 2,000 tonne capacity cargo sheds at the end. More than 1,000 x 22.5m long logs of Fraser Island Turpentine or Satinay, were used to build the pier dragged to the water by bullock teams & towed by boat to be installed. Found to be resistant to marine borers, the logs became popular for use around the world. Satinays, logged heavily in the Pile Valley area, were used in the construction of the Suez Canal and to rebuild the London Docks after World War II. Once it was completed, Urangan Pier helped Hervey Bay serve as one of the main ports of Queensland. Coal output did not reach original expectations from Burrum River mining, but thanks to increasing demand of produce & freight from the Wide Bay area, the QLD Government continued with the decision to build a pier at Hervey Bay. Sugar was transported from as far north as Bundaberg. Urangan pier ceased exporting sugar when the Bundaberg Port was built in 1958 & took over sugar exports. Exporting of timber,
general cargo & produce continued until 1960. Caltex built an oil terminal adjacent to the pier, exports were stopped and fuel became the only import from the pier. In January 1985, the last ship docked at the Urangan pier when Caltex changed from freighting fuel by ship, to bulk supply by rail. This led to the closure of the pier and the Urangan branch line in 1985. With the pier in serious need of repairs, a decision was made by the QLD Government to dismantle the entire pier and when 239m of it was demolished, due to public outcry, 868 metres of the pier was saved & the land was given to the Hervey Bay City Council. The council pledged to restore the pier, which began in the late 1990s. Restoration included removing the pier rail tracks, encasing the wooden pylons with steel, repairing sleepers, hand rails, and lights. It was officially reopened on 27 November 1999. Work continued to 2009 which the last 220m section of the pier had been fully restored. It is one of the longest piers in Australia. When you walk to the end you will be rewarded with spectacular views back to Hervey Bay and the chance to see marine life on the way. It is one of the best fishing spots for people of all ages. Pier Park is a starting point for the former rail line corridor, connecting the Pier with Pialba's Central Business District & can be walked or cycled. Urangan Pier is apart of a 17km long beachside path that stretches from the Boat Club in Urangan to Gatakers Bay Foreshore. Shared path allows leisurely riding between them, with all the seaside attractions shops, cafes, and pubs along the way.

From the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary we would like to say a very big thank you to all our friends and supporters of our sanctuary for your very kind donations for the animals. We really appreciate your help. As you all know this continues to be a long haul for all of us. We at the sanctuary were unable to obtain any assistance from the drought relief fund as we are not primary producers. Now with the added problems of Covid-19, we can only turn to you, our community, to help us survive these troubled times. So your continued support will be appreciated till this is over. So the next big question is what do we need at the moment? If you can help, it’s best to give the sanctuary a call on: 4122 2080 or direct deposit in to our bank account that we have set up as our relief fund account. NAB Bank- FRASER COAST WILDLIFE SANCTUARY INC. BSB- 084 705 AC No.- 387 940 397 Thank you for the support everyone!

Sleep & riskyonline behaviours Experiencing abuse?
High Quality Education
Sleep experts at the University of South Australia are reminding parents about the importance of teenagers getting enough sleep, cautioning them that insufficient sleep can negatively affect their mental health. In a new research paper, UniSA sleep expert Dr Alex Agostini confirms that sleep is intrinsically linked to mental health, but is commonly overlooked by health practitioners as a factor. “Getting enough sleep is important for all of us – it helps our physical and mental health, boosts our immunity, and ensures we can function well on a daily basis” Dr Agostini says. “But for teenagers, sleep is especially critical because they’re at an age where they’re going through a whole range of physical, social, and developmental changes, all of which depend on enough sleep. Research shows that teenagers need at least eight hours of sleep each night. Without this, they’re less able to deal with stressors, such as bullying or social pressures, and run the risk of developing behavioural problems, as well as anxiety and depression. If sleep drops to less than six hours a night, research shows that teens are twice as likely to engage in risky behaviours such as dangerous driving, marijuana, alcohol or tobacco use, risky sexual behaviour, and other aggressive or harmful activities. In Australia, almost 1 in 7 children and adolescents (aged 4–17 yrs) will experience a mental health disorder. Teens spend a lot of time on devices, whether it’s texting friends, playing games, or watching videos, using technology late into the night is one of the most common disruptors of good sleep. Overuse of technology can also contribute to mental health issues likely to increase anxiety.”
Xavier Catholic College opened in 2003 with 90 students in Year 8. In this short time Xavier has grown to a K-12 facility recognised throughout Wide Bay for its outstanding achievements across key areas of Academia, Vocational Education, Cultural activities and Sporting participation. Xavier is a Jesuit Partner school owned and administered by Brisbane Catholic Education. The college takes its name from St Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest who evangelised Asia and the Pacific. Xavier College is a member of a world-wide network of over 2000 Jesuit Universities and Schools. St Francis Xavier studied at the University of Paris where he met St Ignatius of Loyola and became one of the seven who founded the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). The Jesuits believed that God was to be found in all things and that the world must be stayed in, not withdrawn from and that all human endeavour could be sanctified for the greater glory of God. The mission for the College is to provide a high quality education within the Catholic tradition where all are engaged in their learning, challenged to be better people and motivated to do their best. Xavier College aims to assist the formation of their students to become young men and women of comp etence, conscience, and compassion with an attitude of excellence and service.

Choosing accommodation
Great places to stay
Resorts & Motels Are definitely the most commonly known type of accommodation. While it is commonly accepted they are expensive, the truth is resorts and motels can be a less expensive option. When looking for a resort and motel it may be best to contact them directly to compare deals, rates, packages and availability.
Apartment rentals If you’re staying for a longer period, looking for a rental is a good choice. With a rental you have most or all the amenities at a competitive price.

Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats & foxes and their other natural predators & also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. • Male Variegated Fairywren Birdwatchers meet regularly. Enquiries: John Knight Ph: 4125 2372 • Photos supplied courtesy of John Knight

Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and For all your worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. Maryborough worth a visit for the historically minded Lunch & Dinner served 7 days +exciting + exciting new menu coming soon!
Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door.

Evidence of human inhabitation of the Maryborough region stretches back to at least 6,000 years ago. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) and Batjala (Butchulla) people were the original inhabitants of the region. Gubbi were described as an inland tribe of the W ide Bay–Burnett area. The Batjala occupied the more coastal regions including K’gari (Fraser Island). In 1842, Andrew Petrie and Henry Stuart Russell sailed up the river known to the Gubbi as the Monoboola (later known as the Mary River) looking for land and timber to exploit. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders and Oxley had charted the coastline, but the arrival of E .T. Aldridge and his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool and other primary produce, and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. The early Maryborough economy was centred around livestock farming, logging of the bunya pine forests, and the boiling down of animal carcasses to make tallow. In the late 1850s the soil along the Mary River was deemed ideal for the cultivation of sugarcane and in 1859 Edgar Thomas Aldridge was able to grow and produce a world-class experimental crop. From the 1840s to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night.

Where the reef begins
Best known for its iconic rum & turtles, Bundaberg is one of the gems of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Our region is bursting with flavour, boasting locally produced drinks & home-grown food from its rich soil. Adventure here begins on land & extends to the sea, the reef and beyond. Sample the thriving restaurant and café scene. Start your escape by exploring the coastal gems, lakes, gorges and rural landscape before heading to our shores where hundreds of sea turtles return to the beach each year to nest. Later on their hatchlings will begin their journey to the ocean at Mon Repos, it is special! From Nov - Mar. It supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland & has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region. Don't miss Hinkler Hall of Aviation where they celebrate solo aviation pioneer, Bert Hinkler, & the wonders of innovation, adventure & spirit. Interactive displays; fly like Bert on the distinctive glide simulators all set in the lush Bundaberg Botanic Gardens.

Welcome to K’gari • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

Caution crossing creeks
Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

Roundabout quiz Who gives way at a roundabout?
I automotive
Do you signal at $ roundabouts when? $
Going Straight ahead. You can approach without signalling. But:
$
Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:
Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.
Turning left. Here's the way to do it. Approach the roundabout in the left lane or line of traffic. Then:
Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:
Signal left before you exit the roundabout. The same rule applies if you intend driving beyond the right turn exit.
That's not the rule. You must give way to any vehicles already on the roundabout before you enter. It doesn't matter if a car is on your left or on your right.
