Dayman Park Memorials

Concerned about crossing the Breakpoint Spit at the north of Fraser Island on the Asp, Dayman decided it was safer to take the small decked boat through the Great Sandy Strait rather than risk the ocean side of Fraser Island. The Z Force Memorial. The sombre black memorial erected in memory of the heroes of the Krait commemorates the brave soldiers and sailors that trained around Urangan/Fraser Island for Operation Jaywick and Operation Rimauon in 1943 and 1944 during World War II when they took the war deep into enemy held territory using an old Japanese fish carrier named Kofuku Naru, changing its name to the Krait after the small but deadly snake. Z-Force managed to creep into Singapore Harbour and destroyed thousands of tonnes of shipping.

Dayman Park, Urangan and Flinders outlook celebrates the incredible skills of Matthew Flinders developing maps, as well as Lieutenant Joseph Dayman’s successful navigation of the challenging ‘Great Sandy Strait’. Dayman Park is a gorgeous place to catch sunrise or sunset views of Round Island, Big Woody Island and in the distance you can see K'gari (Fraser Island), the marina and the Great Sandy Strait too. Dayman Park offers barbeque and picnic facilities, a playground and the Memorials for Matthew Flinders, Joseph Dayman and the The Z Force. Matthew Flinders monument commemorates the passing 1799 and includes a cannon ball from Flinders vessel the Norfolk. Cook named Hervey Bay after Admiral Augustus John Hervey during his exploration of the eastern Australian coast in the HM Bark Endeavour in 1770. 1799 Matthew Flinders who landed in the area chartered the coast from Moreton Bay to Hervey Bay on board the Colonial sloop Norfolk. Built on Norfolk Island of Norfolk Island Pine. Flinders established that Fraser Island was not a peninsula (as was then believed) but an island, he failed to find a navigable channel through the Great Sandy Strait which separates the island from the mainland. His explorations of the area is commemorated by a monument called Matthew Flinders Lookout at the top of a cliff facing the bay in Dayman Park. Norfolk was wrecked in 1800, then used to supply produce from the Windsor Area to Port Jackson, until when convicts seized her at the mouth of the Hawkesbury River. Intending to sail her to Maluku, the convicts ran her aground at what was later called "Pirate Point" on the mouth of the Hunter River in the suburb of Stockton. 1846 Lieutenant Joseph Dayman was the first European Ariadne one of the first ships to navigate through the Great Sandy Strait. It had been to bring immigrants to the intended that Dayman rendezvous with the HMS Wide Bay in 1862 Rattlesnake but that ship had already departed.

Welcome to K’gari (Fraser Island) Traditional home of the Butchulla people • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

When coming from the south through Maryborough, turn at the roundabout on Hervey Bay - Maryborough road onto Booral road & follow the signs to River Heads. When coming from the north, leave Howard along the Howard Torbanlea road to the roundabout, then turn onto Booral road & follow signs to River Heads. High clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are required as the island consists entirely of sand. All-wheel-drive vehicles and caravans are not recommended. Vehicle access is by barge (ferry) only. QPWS vehicle access and camping permits are required before you enter.

Fraser Island renamed K’gari After a long campaign by Butchulla people, The World Heritage Area within Great Sandy National Park, which is centred on Fraser Island, along with the surrounding waters and parts of the nearby mainland has been renamed K'gari, pronounced "Gurri". Which means paradise, the original Butchulla people’s name for the island. The move was celebrated at a ceremony with Butchulla representatives and Elders on K’gari on 19th September 2021. Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Jade Gould said her people welcome the name change of the world heritage area to K’gari. “The Butchulla people have been campaigning for years to change the name,” Ms Gould said. “The name Fraser Island is a tribute to Eliza Fraser—a woman whose narrative directly lead to the massacre and dispossession of the Butchulla people. A word meaning paradise in Butchulla language is a much more fitting name for such an iconic place.”

I fly more than 7000 miles non stop Black-tailed godwit - they are the only birds known to fly more than 7,000 miles nonstop with no breaks for water or sleep, through cyclones, storms & headwinds. They leave Alaska in October & head straight for the Ocean. Though they are land birds, and cannot fish or rest on the sea, they will cross most of the Pacific Ocean, and fly all the way to New Zealand. Many of them are young, and have never done this before. No other bird can do what they do.

Marine Park zones and designated areas have been chosen within the Great Sandy Marine Park to protect the area’s features, wildlife and habitat. Great Sandy Strait from Dayman Point - Sandy Point (near Hervey Bay) to Tin Can Bay in the south, is a Ramsar wetland of international importance. It has been declared a shorebird designated area within the marine park to protect migratory shorebirds

Reduction of Shorebird Numbers Long-distance migratory shorebirds gather in great numbers at critical sites along the island’s sandy shores and throughout the Great Sandy Strait. Shorebirds feed in the intertidal zone at low tide, day and night. Long-distance migratory birds must gain sufcient weight in preparation for their northern hemisphere breeding season. All sea and shorebirds must rest and feed as their energy budgets are critically tight. These birds require protection. Even one disturbance can put birds at risk by burning energy crucial for surviving tough migrations and weather conditions. Unfortunately, around the world and within Australia, wetlands are rapidly disappearing and being developed for farming, housing, industrial and coastal developments. As people place more demand on land, wildlife can just slip away unnoticed and be forgotten. Many areas that were once habitat for shorebirds are now unsuitable. This results in increased pressures on the remaining areas and a reduction of shorebird numbers. If too much habitat is lost or disturbed, local and international shorebirds and a vital link in the yway will be gone.

Fraser Island was used by Europeans as a major disembarkation point for new settlers heading to Maryborough and Gympie regions. Logging commenced in 1860 of predominantly Satinay, Kauri Pine, Brush Box, Cypress, Blackbutt and Tallowood. After the Gympie gold rush of 1867 demand for timber boomed and logging expanded to become the region's major industry for more than a century. With the timber industry came bullocks, horses, sawmills, homes, a school and a jetty to the island. Logging stopped in late 1991. National parks were declared in the northern part of K'gari in 1971 with more additions in later years. 1992 saw the significant listing of K'gari (Fraser Island) as a World Heritage Area.

Sand driving isn't difficult Caution crossing creeks Some basic rules: •Don't be afraid to deflate your tyres (you can go down to 10psi without damage in soft sand if you absolutely have to) •Never drive over 60km/hr on deflated tyres •Inflate tyres as soon as you pass the soft sections to prolong the life of your tyres •Avoid driving deflated tyres on bitumen (if you have to, keep speed to under 50km/hr) •If you get stuck in sand, firstly check that you have engaged your hubs and are in 4WD. Once stopped, first try reversing over your tracks. If you cannot get out of the bog in reverse in one try, get out and deflate tyres more. Check that the diff is clear - usually by now it is deep in the sand and you'll need to dig it out with a long-handled spade. If the sand is particularly soft it sometimes helps to clear 4 tracks - one for each tyre. This is also a good method for reversing out of a bog. •Select a gear that will get you out of the bog without digging yourself in further. Try H2. Give it some revs to get out of the bog and onto a firmer patch. •When driving on beaches never park on the wet section of sand. Always park your vehicle with the nose pointing to the sea and if doing a u-turn always drive towards the waterline so that the turning tyres are in firmer sand than if you turned with the vehicle positioned nose uphill where the weight of the vehicle would weigh down the driving wheels in the soft sand. •ALWAYS carry a tide chart for the beach that you are travelling along and try to travel at low tide.

Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

The Easter festival, the oldest and most important festival in the Christian calendar, culminates in the celebration that is Easter Sunday, which today is a time when most of us get together with our families, share a meal and - of course - eat lots of chocolate! Most people know that it was on this day that Jesus was said to come to life after being crucified, visiting his friends and followers once more. At Easter time Christians remember the last week of Jesus' life, or ‘Holy Week'. It signals the end of Lent, the traditional time of fasting in the Christian calendar. Easter is the day when we celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Jesus is the Son of God and heroically gave His life to die for our sins. On the third day after He died -- the day we now celebrate as Easter Sunday -- His friends went to His grave, and found that He had risen from the dead. They saw an angel who told them, “Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as He said it would happen." Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; now He offers to you the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins. This is the true story of Easter, and how it can change your life. Christians today often commemorate Good Friday by attending a service, where Jesus' last hours on earth are retraced. As Good Friday is seen as a day of mourning, services are very solemn; churches are left unadorned with flowers or similar decorations, and in some churches pictures and statues are covered over.

Experiencing online abuse?

College of excellence

Advice is available for parents of young as well as adults who may be experiencing online abuse. Some examples of cyberbullying include: • hurtful or abusive messages • creating fake accounts in someone’s name to trick or humiliate • spreading nasty rumours or lies about someone • sharing photos of someone to make fun of them or humiliate What to do: Resist the urge to respond to any hate targeted at you online, it usually just makes it worse. Screenshot evidence: Before you block or delete, make sure you screenshot. If you’ve seen or been the target of mean or nasty stuff online, your immediate reaction might be to make it disappear, but it’s really important you keep evidence of it. Report and block: Most social media services, games and apps have a function that makes it easy to report and block online bullying. You can find reporting links for social media, apps, games and websites in the eSafety guide. Talk to someone: Cyberbullying can make you feel isolated and like everyone is out to get you, but that’s not the case. Make sure you talk to people you trust. Report it to eSafety: If you have trouble getting the content removed and you are under 18, you can report it at www.esafety.gov.au/report/cyberbullying Kids Helpline: 5 to 25 year olds - tel 1800 55 1800 kidshelpline.com.au/get-help/webchat-counselling Headspace: 12 to 25 year olds - tel 1800 650 890 headspace.org.au/eheadspace/

Xavier Catholic College opened in 2003 with 90 students in Year 8. In this short time Xavier has grown to a K-12 facility recognised throughout Wide Bay for its outstanding achievements across key areas of Academia, Vocational Education, Cultural activities and Sporting participation. Xavier is a Jesuit Partner school owned and administered by Brisbane Catholic Education. The college takes its name from St Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest who evangelised Asia and the Pacific. Xavier College is a member of a world-wide network of over 2000 Jesuit Universities and Schools. St Francis Xavier studied at the University of Paris where he met St Ignatius of Loyola and became one of the seven who founded the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). The Jesuits believed that God was to be found in all things and that the world must be stayed in, not withdrawn from and that all human endeavour could be sanctified for the greater glory of God. The mission for the College is to provide a high quality education within the Catholic tradition where all are engaged in their learning, challenged to be better people and motivated to do their best. Xavier College aims to assist the formation of their students to become young men and women of competence, conscience, and compassion with an attitude of excellence and service.

Unique & historical architecture Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door.

The early times in Maryborough Evidence of human inhabitation of the Maryborough region stretches back to at least 6,000 years ago. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) and Batjala (Butchulla) people were the original inhabitants of the region. Gubbi were described as an inland tribe of the W ide Bay–Burnett area. The Batjala occupied the more coastal regions including K’gari (Fraser Island). In 1842, Andrew Petrie and Henry Stuart Russell sailed up the river known to the Gubbi as the Monoboola (later known as the Mary River) looking for land and timber to exploit. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders and Oxley had charted the coastline, but the arrival of E .T. Aldridge and his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool and other primary produce, and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. The early Maryborough economy was centred around livestock farming, logging of the bunya pine forests, and the boiling down of animal carcasses to make tallow. In the late 1850s the soil along the Mary River was deemed ideal for the cultivation of sugarcane and in 1859 Edgar Thomas Aldridge was able to grow and produce a world-class experimental crop. From the 1840s to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night.

Bundaberg & Surrounds

Best known for its iconic rum and turtles, Bundaberg is one of the gems of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Our region is bursting with flavour, boasting locally produced drinks and home-grown food from its rich soil. Adventure here begins on land and extends to the sea, the reef and beyond. Sample the thriving restaurant and café scene. Start your escape by exploring the coastal gems, lakes, gorges and rural landscape before heading to our shores where hundreds of sea turtles return to the beach each year to nest. Later on their hatchlings will begin their journey to the ocean at Mon Repos, it is special! From Nov - Mar. It supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region. Don't miss Hinkler Hall of Aviation where they celebrate solo aviation pioneer, Bert Hinkler, and the wonders of innovation, adventure & spirit. Interactive displays; fly like Bert on the distinctive glide simulators all set in the lush Bundaberg Botanic Gardens.

Going Straight ahead. You can approach without signalling. But:

$

Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:

Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.

Turning left. Here's the way to do it. Approach the roundabout in the left lane or line of traffic. Then:

Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:

Signal left before you exit the roundabout. The same rule applies if you intend driving beyond the right turn exit.

That's not the rule. You must give way to any vehicles already on the roundabout before you enter. It doesn't matter if a car is on your left or on your right.

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! It's worth paying for a professional installation. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your car's handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the car's mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your car's handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, it may need adjusting. Many cars have an adjuster on the dash. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle and secure.

* Bookings essential. Terms and conditions apply for all courtesy vehicles. See in store for details.

• Tyres and wheels - huge range to choose from • Wheel alignments - computerised front and rear wheels • Brakes including disc rotor machining pads and shoes • Suspension upgrades and repairs from many manufacturers • Petrol and diesel log book servicing most makes and models • Batteries - full range of Century, vehicles, boats and vans Page 62.
