k'gari / fraser island

PUBLISHING FOR 30 YEARS

Fraser Island is K’gari Caution crossing creeks • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

Travel through with respect and care Traditional owners the Butchulla people, have a long and ongoing relationship with K’gari (Fraser Island). In order to acknowledge the important connection to country of the Butchulla people, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s (NPRSR) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) urges visitors to treat the country they are travelling through with respect and care.

Logging and mining a thing of the past

PUBLISHING FOR 30 YEARS

Shorebirds are in critical numbers Long-distance migratory shorebirds gather in great numbers at critical sites along the island’s sandy shores and throughout the Great Sandy Strait. Shorebirds feed in the intertidal zone at low tide, day and night. All sea and shorebirds must rest and feed as their energy budgets are critically tight. These birds require protection. Even one disturbance can put birds at risk by burning energy crucial for surviving. Wetlands are rapidly disappearing around the world and within Australia, and being developed for farming, housing, industrial and coastal developments. As people place more demand on land, wildlife can just slip away unnoticed and be forgotten. Many areas of habitat for shorebirds are now unsuitable. This increases pressures on the remaining areas and a reduction of shorebird numbers. If too much habitat is lost or disturbed, local and international shorebirds will be gone.

Allow shorebirds to rest & feed

Logging commenced in 1860 of predominantly Satinay, Kauri Pine, Brush Box, Cypress, Blackbutt and Tallowood. With the timber industry came bullocks, horses, sawmills, homes, a school and a jetty. Logging ceased in late 1991. Small-scale mining for heavy minerals, mainly rutile and zircon, began with mining leases granted in 1949 and sand mining ending 1976.

Page 08. Hervey Bay & Fraser Island Tourist Guide No. 122.

Black-tailed godwit. They are the only birds known to fly more than 7,000 miles nonstop, no water, no sleep, cyclones, storms, headwinds. Leave Alaska in October, head straight for the Ocean. Though they are land birds and cannot fish or rest on the sea, they will cross most of the Pacific Ocean and fly all the way to New Zealand. Many of them are young, and have never done this before. No other bird can do that.

Easter: More than chocolate The Easter festival, the oldest and most important festival in the Christian calendar, culminates in the celebration that is Easter Sunday, which today is a time when most of us get together with our families, share a meal and - of course eat lots of chocolate! Most people know that it was on this day that Jesus was said to come to life after being crucified, visiting his friends and followers once more. At Easter time Christians remember the last week of Jesus' life, or ‘Holy Week'. It signals the end of Lent, the traditional time of fasting in the Christian calendar. Easter is the day when we celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Jesus is the Son of God and heroically gave His life to die for our sins. On the third day after He died -- the day we now celebrate as Easter Sunday -- His friends went to His grave, and found that He had risen from the dead. They saw an angel who told them, “Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as He said it would happen." Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; now He offers to you the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins. This is the true story of Easter, and how it can change your life. Christians today often commemorate Good Friday by attending a service, where Jesus' last hours on earth are retraced. As Good Friday is seen as a day of mourning, services are very solemn; churches are left unadorned with flowers or similar decorations, and in some churches pictures and statues are covered over.

places of worship / education

High Quality Education Xavier Catholic College opened in 2003 with 90 students in Year 8. In this short time Xavier has grown to a K-12 facility recognised throughout W ide Bay for its outstanding achievements across key areas of Academia, Vocational Education, Cultural activities and Sporting participation. Xavier is a Jesuit Partner school owned and administered by Brisbane Catholic Education. The college takes its name from St Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest who evangelised Asia and the Pacific. Xavier College is a member of a world-wide network of over 2000 Jesuit Universities and Schools. St Francis Xavier studied at the University of P aris where he met St Ignatius of Loyola and became one of the seven who founded the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). The Jesuits believed that God was to be found in all things and that the world must be stayed in, not withdrawn from and that all human endeavour could be sanctified for the greater glory of God. The mission for the College is to provide a high quality education within the Catholic tradition where all are engaged in their learning, challenged to be better people and motivated to do their best. Xavier College aims to assist the formation of thier students to become young men and women of competence, conscience, and compassion with an attitude of excellence and service.

Once a busy immigration port Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door.

maryborough / gin gin

Welcome to Gin Gin Gin Gin is a small town in the Bundaberg Region Qld. It is located on the Bruce Highway, approximately 124km N/W of Hervey Bay, 51km West of Bundaberg & 370km N/W of Brisbane. The town owes its existence to its strategic location about halfway between Brisbane & Rockhampton. It is a convenient stop-over point for driving travellers. The towns name Gin Gin was derived from the original station name, which used a local Aboriginal word indicating "red soil thick scrub” The Gin Gin district was originally settled in 1847 with sheep and cattle. The site where the town now stands was once part of the sprawling Gin Gin Station owned by Sir Thomas McIlwraith, who was Premier of Queensland three times between 1879 and 1893. Gin Gin, like Bundaberg, is heavily dependent on the Sugar industry, with sugarcane plantations dotted throughout the area. Cattle production also features prominently. In recent years small cropping has taken off across farms in the district, with varied success. A gateway to great Barramundi fishing, Gin Gin is just 20 minutes South of international fishing destination, Lake Monduran. Whether you are a fisherman, bushwalker, history lover, bird-watcher or just love the great Australian outdoors, take a trip to our pioneering past with rural countryside and cattle country, vineyards and olive groves in Gin Gin and surrounds.

Childers is located 311 km north of Brisbane via the Bruce Highway. It is 60 km north west of Maryborough, 54 km south of Bundaberg and 108 m above sea level. This town offers views overlooking thousands of hectares of vivid green sugarcane and avocado farms. Visitors can step back in history when they visit the town’s many historical buildings, some buildings dating back to Queensland’s early pioneering days. Childers offers a relaxed country atmosphere. Nearby is beautiful Woodgate Beach and National Park, offering an unspoilt coastal playground for visitors seeking peace and quiet.

Bundaberg & Surrounds

Best known for its iconic rum and turtles, Bundaberg is one of the gems of the Southern Great Barrier Reef . Our region is bursting with flavour boasting locally produced drinks and home-grown food from its rich soil. Adventure here begins on land and extends to the sea, the reef and beyond. Start your escape by exploring our coastal gems, lakes gorges and rural landscape before heading to our shores where hundreds of sea turtles return to the beach each year to nest. Later on their hatchlings will begin their journey to the ocean. Follow suit, and take the plunge into the big blue yonder . In Bundaberg you will find a vibrant and creative city centre - be sure to take in an exhibition at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, a movie or show at Moncrieff Entertainment Centre and sample the thriving restaurant and café scene. Don't miss Hinkler Hall of Aviation, Historic Fairymead House and Bundaberg & District Historical Museum. You will want to tick off these top attractions too; Bundaberg Rum Distillery and The Bundaberg Barrel's True Brew Experience Tour which traces the journey of Ginger Beer.

Be a responsible skipper Boating in Queensland you're responsible for making sure the vessel is safe, properly equipped and maintained and operated in a safe manner. This includes loading its vessel limits, people, cargo and stores, and making sure the vessel is adequate for the waters you intend to use it.

• Be a responsible skipper, before you head out on the water follow these simple tips: • Check that your boat is in good condition. • Have the required safety equipment on board, in good condition and easily accessible. • Tell someone you know where you are going & when you intend to return. • Have the right marine licence and know how to handle the boat. • Know how to use your marine radio. • Check the weather before you go out. • Know the rules of the sea-road and follow them. • Lifejacket - wear it! Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:

Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.

Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:
