30Y E A R PUBLISHING

Celebrating 30 years printing & publishing In the late eighties the Martins' family made the fashionable decision to make a sea change. Wharfie Neville, wife Carol and their son Roy, a boat builder/charter boat master, packed up their homes in the inner city of Sydney and left their jobs on Sydney Harbour behind. Moving to the sheltered water ways of the Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island was an easy choice for them. Foreseeing the inevitable real estate boom in Burrum Heads, Nev. and Carol turned their hands to property development and built the first beachfront apartments. Upon the apartments completion, the family opened the boat and cycle hire, which is still there to this day. In 1991, Roy applied for and won the concessionaires rights to open and run the Kingfisher W ater Sports at the resort on Fraser Island along with his family. They were responsible for conducting Waterski, sailing and windsurfing lessons and innovation of self or guided paddle tours to local creeks and lakes on the island. Innovation of fishing lessons on the jetty and running regular fishing trips for notable clients as the then Governor General Bill Hayden and media celebrities which were part of a regular calendar. Thank you Peter Comans. Fulfilling a need, Kingfisher water taxi was built for staff transfer and medical evacuation. It was sold back to the resort and Roy returned to driving the boats on the Fraser Island barge before moving to Chicago some time later. Neville came out of retirement and bought into the local Independent Newspaper. Which the Hervey Bay and Fraser Island Tourist Guide was a non profitable publication operating in the background, more of an inconvenience and a liability. Roy returned from the USA and bought into the local paper. The Independent was sold and the Guide and Tearoom Design and Print commenced as a standalone business. I would like to mention without the guidance from the masters of the Print/Publishing trade: Nev. Martin, George and Lyn Duck, Ken Stevens from the City News Caloundra, Bob Bottom from Bribie Island News and Gary Kiltstrum from APN press Bundaberg. Their contribution was essential

and has helped keep the Hervey Bay F raser Island Tourist Guide running to this day, 30 years later. I would like to also thank Damo Nash for his many years of assistance. New to the business in sales is Brooke Cameron, she will continue to deliver our honest, reliable local alternative with our 3 month, one low cost, niche brand in print marketing and advertising. It’s carefully monitored distribution from: Caboolture, Tin Can Bay, Gympie, Maryborough, Howard/Burrum district, Childers, W oodgate, Bundaberg and Gladstone. We take our distribution very seriously and is the key to our success. We print sufficient copies of our magazine to ensure we cover the full 3 month edition period. It is not just thrown on the lawn or dumped in places who don't want them or pay good dollars to buy that has no content. Our point of difference is the magazine is free, to be given out by places who are pleased to have them. The Guides are on businesses counters or point of display , for anyone to pick up to read and keep it for the Maps, Street Directory , Tide Times, Contacts,

Phone Numbers and Upcoming Events. It is more than a Tourist guide, it is a community guide. Also online as an E -mag widens the readership even further. Having a regular client base in every edition for many years proves we are doing something right.

I sincerely congratulate Roy Congratulations on 30 years of publishing - Hervey Bay & Fraser Island Tourist Guide. There is no denying that Roy Martin and his family have forged a respectful spot in the publication industry in Hervey Bay. They should feel proud of presenting an informative quarterly tourist guide, aimed at people who want to visit the region. Going above and beyond the guide promotes all facets of the region. Also, by putting business names ‘out there’, it has a shared success for local business and local employment. The messages the guide has communicated well over the last 30 years range from advertising products, to encouraging people to drive safely on Fraser Island, with some handy tips to do that - to where tourists can get a great dining experience. Our region has much to offer and the Martin family have always adapted their advertising product to suit local business

e-mag: www.herveybayguide.info

advertising needs. Things have changed dramatically with how messages are sent and received in the last 30 years, and it’s commendable that Roy and his team have kept in step with published communications by embracing strong digital promotion. They are still going strong today and they will continue to do so well into the future. I know that Roy takes a great sense of pride in his wide catchment of distribution of the guide and the promotion of our region. Roy should be proud of his achievements and of his unwavering support and promotion of local businesses. I sincerely congratulate Roy, Brooke and Damian reaching 30 years of publication. Well Done!! Ted Sorensen. State Member for Hervey Bay.

Bamboo Land - 1990 - 2020 Bamboo Land was started as a hobby by Klas Nilsson (pictured) in 1990 on a riverfront property purchased in 1987. The property used to be a citrus orchard. The very rst bamboos and original inspiration was a couple of clump divisions. Over the years more species have been added to the collection making Bamboo Land what it is today. It now has a collection of over 100 species of the world's nest clumping bamboo varieties. In recent years Bamboo Land has also been collecting a large range of gingers and heliconias, as a way of complementing the bamboo and providing a colourful addition to the display gardens. In 2006, Klas's son, Janne Nilsson, joined the family business. A few years after, Janne took over the business leaving his Father to enjoy his well deserved retirement but is still Mr. Fix-it. In 2009, Janne met Tarissa Beilby (now Tarissa Nilsson), who soon after took charge of the retail side of the business. In 2011, Bamboo Land bought the neighbouring riverfront 10 acre property, doubling the size of the gardens and are currently in the process of building a new purpose built retail garden centre, featuring a reasonably large cafe with serving area overlooking the Burrum River. It is expected that these expansions be open in 2022.

Annual migration of up to 10,000 kilometres Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a Summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth. The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from April to August and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres. The exact timing of the migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground. At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is not the largest whale found in Australian waters. This species was once only valued Probable feeding areas dead — mainly Breeding Areas for its oil and

baleen, or ‘whalebone’. Beginning in Australia shortly after European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry. Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations which one was believed to be at Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park. The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats made commercial whaling so efficient that many

whale species came very close to extinction. When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, killing approximately 8300 off the east coast between 1949 and 1962 until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963. It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly little over 100 individuals.

Preferred area for Winter Hervey Bay is a unique winter stopover ground for the migratory parade of Humpback whales. It is believed the calm, shallow, protected waters of the Bay is a preferred area for yearlings, sub-adult (sexually immature whales), followed by mature females in late August, and then we begin to see mothers with newborn calves in Sept-Oct. By mid-September the mature males have found the Bay, and the waters come alive with their haunting songs. The arrival of the males, also means increased activity with males competing with one another for access to females. This means more aerial activity such as breaching (leaping nearly out of the water), and many head, tail and flipper displays. Hervey Bay’s the only area in the world where humpbacks consistently approach vessels. The curious humpbacks of Hervey Bay provide some of the most unusual and prolonged encounters with humans. These ‘muggings' are very unusual outside of the Bay and have made whalewatches in the Bay legendary. Even if you have watched whales elsewhere, nothing compares to watching the curious humpback whales of Hervey Bay.

Antarctic Minke Whales Bryde's Whales are more robust than the other large rorquals (large baleen whales). The rostrum of the Antarctic Minke Whale is very narrow and pointed, with a single ridge on the head. The maximum length of Antarctic Minke Whales appears to be around 9.8 m. Are not gregarious and tend to swim alone or in pairs, large feeding groups of up to 400 individuals may form. Minke whales are known to be curious, often approaching boats from a distance. Antarctic Minke Whales probably do not migrate as far north as Dwarf Minke Whales but this species does undergo extensive migration between the Summer Antarctic feeding grounds and Winter sub-tropical to tropical breeding grounds. Mature Antarctic Minke Whales feed primarily on the Antarctic Krill. www.environment.gov.au

Pilot Whales have a robust body with a thick tail stock. The dorsal fin is wide, broad based, falcate and set well forward on the body. Occurring in tropical and warm-temperate waters world-wide. The Long-finned Pilot Whale is widely recorded in colder waters off southern Australia. The Short-Finned Pilot Whales reach physical maturity at approximately 17 years and is more than 5 m in length, a maximum age of 46 years. While females are smaller at 4.8 m and reach 63 years. Feeding mainly on squid, cuttlefish, octopus and some fish. www.environment.gov.au

are the second smallest of the baleen whales. The rostrum is V-shaped but has three parallel ridges between the blowhole and museumvictoria.com.au rostral tip. They can grow to 14.6 m (males) or 15.6 m (females). Bryde's Whales are not gregarious and mostly swim alone or in pairs. Bryde's Whale are considered to be a fairly opportunistic feeder, readily consuming whatever shoaling prey is available, such as pilchard, anchovy, sardine, mackerel, herring and other schooling fish. www.environment.gov.au

Southern Right Whales are large baleen whales with a less streamlined shape than balaenopteris like Humpback Whales. They grow to a maximum length of 17.5 m and weight of 80 t, with mature females often slightly larger than males. The majority of are uniformly black in colour, no dorsal fin. Thought to be solitary during migration, or accompanied by a dependent calf or occasionally a yearling offspring. Forming large groups in breeding areas. These have been recorded in the coastal waters of all Australian states with the exception of the Northern Territory. Krill is a major food source and require adequate supplies of food to accumulate energy reserves that is essential for migration and breeding. Depletion of krill through over harvesting may be a potential future threat for the Australian population of Southern Right Whales. www.environment.gov.au

fraser island

A brief history of Fraser • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

Going Straight ahead. You can approach without signalling. But:

Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:

Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.

Turning left. Here's the way to do it. Approach the roundabout in the left lane or line of traffic. Then:

Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:

Signal left before you exit the roundabout. The same rule applies if you intend driving beyond the right turn exit.

That's not the rule. You must give way to any vehicles already on the roundabout before you enter. It doesn't matter if a car is on your left or on your right.

Car Fuel Saving Tips 1. Drive economically Around town, you’ll use less fuel if you: Drive smoothly and try to maintain a steady speed. Manual, change up through the gears as soon as practical. Automatic, ease back slightly on the accelerator once at speed. Avoid peak hour and other heavy traffic where possible. Avoid engine idling for long periods. On the freeway, you’ll use less fuel if you: Reduce speed - you can reduce your fuel consumption by as much as 25% by taking 20 km/h off your speed. Use cruise control if you’ve got it. Use your car’s air-conditioner sparingly. Keep windows up and use the ventilation system when travelling over about 50 km/h, if your car doesn’t have air conditioning. If your car’s transmission has power and economy modes, use the economy mode to ensure the transmission up-shifts earlier. This also helps reduce wear and tear on your car’s brakes, tyres and the other mechanical parts. Saves on running costs too. 2. Service your car regularly Keep the engine correctly tuned. Keep filters in good condition. Keep the fuel and ignition systems in good working order. Regularly change the engine oil using the correct grade of oil. 3. Inflate tyres correctly Check your tyre pressure once a week, when the tyres are cold. Keep tyres inflated to a pressure slightly higher than that stated in the vehicle handbook, find the tyre pressure on the tyre placard, which is typically inside the glove box, on the driver’s door or on the fuel filler flap. Setting the tyre pressure slightly higher will aid in fuel economy and safer handling. 4. Check the wheel alignment Ensure the wheel alignment is correctly set and the brakes aren’t dragging, as increase rolling resistance will use more fuel. 5. Check your load If you can, reduce the amount of gear in your car. Things like golf clubs and toolboxes add unnecessary weight, which in turn increases fuel consumption. External attachments ie: roof racks will increase wind resistance and fuel use.
