Fraser Island renamed K’gari After a long campaign by Butchulla people, The World Heritage Area within Great Sandy National Park, which is centred on Fraser Island, along with the surrounding waters and parts of the nearby mainland has been renamed K'gari, pronounced "Gurri". Which means paradise, the original Butchulla people’s name for the island. The move was celebrated at a ceremony with Butchulla representatives and Elders on K’gari on 19th September 2021. Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Jade Gould said her people welcome the name change of the world heritage area to K’gari. “The Butchulla people have been campaigning for years to change the name,” Ms Gould said. “The name Fraser Island is a tribute to Eliza Fraser—a woman whose narrative directly lead to the massacre and dispossession of the Butchulla people. A word meaning paradise in Butchulla language is a much more fitting name for such an iconic place.”
renamed in consultation with Traditional Owners and the community including Naree Budjong Djara National Park on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and Gheebulum Kunungai National Park Mulgumpin (Moreton Island), both of which are home to the Quandamooka people.”
Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon, who attended the ceremony, said that this builds on the name change of the Island’s national park to K’gari (Fraser Island) section of the Great Sandy National Park, which was declared in 2017.
Kate Doolan from the Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation has welcomed the World Heritage Area’s name change to K'gari. “On behalf of the Butchulla people, we pay respect to our Elders who are no longer with us to hear this news,” Ms Doolan said.
“That was the first step in the process. I look forward to working with the Butchulla people, stakeholders and the community to progress the necessary steps now for the formal renaming of the entire island to K’gari. Other national parks have been
“Today is a time of reflection for our people and for those souls who long advocated for such a meaningful change over such a lengthy period of time.“

Story of the Fraser’s Butchulla name, K'gari has been inhabited by humans for as long as 5,000 years. Captain Cook in 1770 was the first recorded European to sight Fraser Island. Indian Head was noted when passing northward at a distance of 5 miles offshore through his telescope. Cook saw several people upon the shore on a headland. Matthew Flinders landed near the most northern point of the island in 1802. Great Sandy Island became the Island’s name for a short period of time. The Sterling Castle struck a coral reef north of Fraser Island in 1836. Many survivors escaped onto the island, including Captain James Fraser and wife, Eliza. Captain Fraser never made it off the island. Controversy surrounds his death. The captain’s wife, accused the Aboriginal people of murdering him. While other surviving crew members stated that the captain died from natural causes. To this day, his death is still a source of myth and legend. Eliza Fraser, a Scottish woman, managed to integrate into the indigenous society and survived for many weeks among them, until she was eventually rescued near Lake Cootharaba on Noosa North Shore. Eliza chose to publish her accounts of the shipwreck upon returning to England, in which she describes her experience as "a fate worse than death", and paints the Butchulla people as primitive, barbaric, murderous and

cannibalistic. Despite having little chance of surviving without them, her adverse depictions lead to reprisals and relocation of the local inhabitants which declined to 300 people in 1890. Initially, Eliza enjoyed much sympathy. This began to wane, however, when her accounts of the ordeal became more and more random, and increasingly embellished. She became a minor media celebrity, and her story grew even wilder. Controversy followed when she approached the Mayor of London to request a charity be set up for her and her 3 children (not mentioning the fact she had secretly married another sea Captain in Sydney within 6 months of being rescued, before heading back to England on his boat). 1976 Australian bawdy adventure drama film, ‘Eliza Fraser’, starring Susannah York, Trevor Howard, Noel Ferrier and John Castle. It was the first Australian film with a big-budget, costing $1.2m to make. Described as a classic Aussie tale of colonial hardship and bawdy beginnings. In 1947, Sidney Nolan created a series of paintings, “Nolan’s Eliza Fraser". They gained prominence after one of the works was reproduced on the cover of the important Australian novel ‘A Fringe of Leaves’, written by Patrick White, whose imaginative re-counting of Mrs Fraser’s story was inspired by Nolan’s paintings. Fraser Island was named after a British ship captain James Fraser and his wife Eliza, who were stranded on the island. K'gari formally adopted the traditional Butchulla name, K'gari. (Paradise). Pronounced "gurri". The World Heritage Committee formally rename the heritage-listed island on 19 Sept 2021.The name is derived from its Dreamtime creation story.

Sleep and risky behaviours
Generous family discounts
Sleep experts at the University of South Australia are reminding parents about the importance of teenagers getting enough sleep, cautioning them that insufficient sleep can negatively affect their mental health. In a new research paper, UniSA sleep expert Dr Alex Agostini confirms that sleep is intrinsically linked to mental health, but is commonly overlooked by health practitioners as a factor. “Getting enough sleep is important for all of us – it helps our physical and mental health, boosts our immunity, and ensures we can function well on a daily basis” Dr Agostini says. “But for teenagers, sleep is especially critical because they’re at an age where they’re going through a whole range of physical, social, and developmental changes, all of which depend on enough sleep. Research shows that teenagers need at least eight hours of sleep each night. Without this, they’re less able to deal with stressors, such as bullying or social pressures, and run the risk of developing behavioural problems, as well as anxiety and depression. If sleep drops to less than six hours a night, research shows that teens are twice as likely to engage in risky behaviours such as dangerous driving, marijuana, alcohol or tobacco use, risky sexual behaviour, and other aggressive or harmful activities. In Australia, almost 1 in 7 children and adolescents (aged 4–17 yrs) will experience a mental health disorder. Teens spend a lot of time on devices, whether it’s texting friends, playing games, or watching videos, using technology late into the night is one of the most common disruptors of good sleep. Overuse of technology can also contribute to mental health issues likely to increase anxiety.”
Xavier Catholic College opened in 2003 with 90 students in Year 8. In this short time Xavier has grown to a K-12 facility recognised throughout W ide Bay for its outstanding achievements across key areas of Academia, Vocational Education, Cultural activities and Sporting participation. Xavier is a Jesuit Partner school owned and administered by Brisbane Catholic Education. The college takes its name from St Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest who evangelised Asia and the Pacific. Xavier College is a member of a world-wide network of over 2000 Jesuit Universities and Schools. St Francis Xavier studied at the University of P aris where he met St Ignatius of Loyola and became one of the seven who founded the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). The Jesuits believed that God was to be found in all things and that the world must be stayed in, not withdrawn from and that all human endeavour could be sanctified for the greater glory of God. The mission for the College is to provide a high quality education within the Catholic tradition where all are engaged in their learning, challenged to be better people and motivated to do their best. Xavier College aims to assist the formation of thier students to become young men and women of competence, conscience, and compassion with an attitude of excellence and service.

Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

The early times in Maryborough Evidence of human inhabitation of the Maryborough region stretches back to at least 6,000 years ago. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) and Batjala (Butchulla) people were the original inhabitants of the region. Gubbi were described as an inland tribe of the Wide Bay–Burnett area. The Batjala occupied the more coastal regions including K’gari (Fraser Island). In 1842, Andrew Petrie and Henry Stuart Russell sailed up the river known to the Gubbi as the Monoboola (later known as the Mary River) looking for land and timber to exploit. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders and Oxley had charted the coastline, but the arrival of E.T. Aldridge and his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool and other primary produce, and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. The early Maryborough economy was centred around livestock farming, logging of the bunya pine forests, and the boiling down of animal carcasses to make tallow. In the late 1850s the soil along the Mary River was deemed ideal for the cultivation of sugarcane and in 1859 Edgar Thomas Aldridge was able to grow and produce a world-class experimental crop. From the 1840s to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night.

The Early days in the region The Childers area was traditionally inhabited by the Dundaburra group who are part of Kabi Kabi nations in the northern most area of the Wide Bay Burnett. Their descendants still live in the region. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1850s to raise cattle on the fertile lands. Back then, sugar was (as it is now) the key crop grown in the Isis. The town was established in 1885, the town is reportedly named after Hugh Childers, British statesman, who was the Auditor-General of Victoria in the 1850s. On the way to Bundaberg just 40mins down the Bruce Hwy is the rural town of Apple Tree Creek. It was formerly known as Bodalla, the Dundaburra people of the Northern Kabi group named from the Gregory River Plum, which to first Europeans looked like an apple. Prior to settlement of the Isis District which includes Apple Tree Creek - the area was called Buth'arth, translating to scrub. The town was renamed in 1962. Cordalba, also in the Bundaberg Regional Council area, was founded in 1896 and played an important role in the sugar industry. Growth in local agriculture came with the arrival of the railway line in Cordalba in 1896 from the main Childers line and functioned as the main Queensland Railways depot and interchange station until 1964. The original inhabitants of the area were the Kabi (or Kabi Kabi) tribe of aboriginal people. Their legacy can be seen in the name "Cordalba" meaning "place of koalas". In 1881 the Isis River Provisional School opened and in 1901 became Cordalba State School. Bundaberg Central is the central suburb and business district of Bundaberg. Bounded by the Burnett River to the north, Bundaberg Creek to the east, Saltwater Creek to the south and the North Coast railway line to the west. The name was coined by surveyor John Charlton Thompson. Bunda is derived from the name of one of the kinship groups of the local Taribelang people, to which was added the Saxon suffix berg, meaning "town". The Burnett River was surveyed by John Charles Burnett in 1847.

k'gari / fraser island
Fraser Island is K’gari Caution crossing creeks • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes some as much as 70 metres above sea level.
Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

Roundabout quiz Who gives way at a roundabout?
Do you signal at $ roundabouts when? $
Going Straight ahead. You can approach without signalling. But:
$
Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:
Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.
Turning left. Here's the way to do it. Approach the roundabout in the left lane or line of traffic. Then:
Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:
Signal left before you exit the roundabout. The same rule applies if you intend driving beyond the right turn exit.
That's not the rule. You must give way to any vehicles already on the roundabout before you enter. It doesn't matter if a car is on your left or on your right.
