Annual migration of up to 10,000 kilometres Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a Summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth. The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from April to August and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres. The exact timing of the migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground. At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is not the largest whale found in Australian waters. This species was once only valued Probable feeding areas dead — mainly Breeding Areas for its oil and

baleen, or ‘whalebone’. Beginning in Australia shortly after European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry. Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations which one was believed to be at Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park. The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats made commercial whaling so efficient that many

whale species came very close to extinction. When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, killing approximately 8300 off the east coast between 1949 and 1962 until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963. It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly little over 100 individuals.

Preferred area for Winter Hervey Bay is a unique winter stopover ground for the migratory parade of Humpback whales. It is believed the calm, shallow, protected waters of the Bay is a preferred area for yearlings, sub-adult (sexually immature whales), followed by mature females in late August, and then we begin to see mothers with newborn calves in Sept- Oct. By mid-September the mature males have found the Bay, and the waters come alive with their haunting songs. The arrival of the males, also means increased activity with males competing with one another for access to females. This means more aerial activity such as breaching (leaping nearly out of the water), and many head, tail and flipper displays. Hervey Bay ’s the only area in the world where humpbacks consistently approach vessels. The curious humpbacks of Hervey Bay provide some of the most unusual and prolonged encounters with humans. These ‘muggings' are very unusual outside of the Bay and have made whalewatches in the Bay legendary. Even if you have watched whales elsewhere, nothing compares to watching the curious humpback whales of Hervey Bay.

The Bay’s other Whales Antarctic Minke Whale

Bryde's Whales

is more robust than the other large rorquals (large baleen whales). The rostrum of the Antarctic Minke Whale is very narrow and pointed, with a single ridge on the head . The maximum length of Antarctic Minke Whales appears to be around 9.8 m. Not gregarious and tend to swim alone or in pairs, large feeding groups of up to 400 individuals may form. Minke whales are known to be curious, often approaching boats from a distance. Antarctic Minke Whales probably do not migrate as far north as Dwarf Minke Whales but this species does undergo extensive migration between the summer Antarctic feeding grounds and winter sub-tropical to tropical breeding grounds. Mature Antarctic Minke Whales feed primarily on the Antarctic Krill. www.environment.gov.au

are the second smallest of the (baleen whales). The rostrum is V-shaped but has three parallel ridges between the blowhole and nostril tip. They can grow to 14.6 m (males) or 15.6 m (females). Bryde's Whales are not gregarious and mostly swim alone or in pairs. Bryde's Whale is considered to be a fairly opportunistic feeder, readily consuming whatever shoaling prey is available, such as pilchard, anchovy, sardine, mackerel, herring and other schooling fish. www.environment.gov.au

Pilot Whales

have a robust body with a thick tail stock. The dorsal fin is wide, broad based, falcate and set well forward on the body. Occurring in tropical and warm-temperate waters world-wide. The Long-finned Pilot Whale is widely recorded in colder waters off southern Australia. The Short-Finned Pilot Whales reaches physical maturity at approximately 17 years and is more than 5 m in length, a maximum age of 46 years. While females are smaller at 4.8 m and reach 63 years. Feeding mainly on squid, cuttlefish, octopus and some fish. www.environment.gov.au

Southern Right Whales are large baleen whales with a less streamlined shape than balaenopterids like Humpback Whales. They grow to a maximum length of 17.5 m and weight of 80 t, with mature females often slightly larger than males. The majority are uniformly black in colour, no dorsal fin. Thought to be solitary during migration, or accompanied by a dependent calf or occasionally a yearling offspring. Forming large groups in breeding areas. These have been recorded in the coastal waters of all Australian states with the exception of the Northern Territory. Krill is a major food source and require adequate supplies of food to accumulate energy reserves that is essential for migration and breeding. Depletion of krill through over harvesting may be a potential future threat for the Australian population of Southern Right Whales. www.environment.gov.au

Fascinating Humpback whale facts! The Humpback whale is a species of Baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12–16 m and weigh about 36,000 kg. The Humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head Life span 45 – 50 years No Teeth The Humpback Whale has no teeth, they have baleen plates, that acts like a giant sieve! Blow Holes The Humpback Whale has two blow holes, one for each lung. Each of its lungs is the size of a small car. Baby Whales - A baby Whale is called a calf. They are nearly one tonne when they are born and suckle up to 600 litres of milk a day from their mums! Song Males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours. It is thought to have a role in mating. Page 08. Hervey Bay & Fraser Island Tourist Guide No. 116.

All aboard the Mary Valley Rattler! Best seen from aboard the Mary Valley Rattler, the gentle rolling hills of the nearby Mary Valley are a patchwork of grazing properties and macadamia nut farms, providing a tantalising glimpse into life in rural Australia. With a fleet of heritage locomotives including C17 steam engines 967 & 974, and a suite of restored carriages all with their own unique character, the Mary Valley Rattler offers several different services every week through one of the most beautiful parts of Queensland. The Classic Rattler Run is the attraction’s flagship service, a 3-hour round trip from the historic Gympie Station on Tozer Street, out to Amamoor Station. This service runs morning and afternoon every Wednesday and Saturday, with one run a day on Fridays (starting in September) and Sundays (starting 6 th of October). Guests can also board the Classic Rattler Run in Amamoor for a return journey, offering time to explore the Mary Valley before or after their rail experience. It’s here in the delightful, historic town of Amamoor (best known as the home to the annual country Gympie Music

Muster) where you can watch the fascinating process required to turn the engine around on the heritage turntable. On Thursdays, the Rattler’s Red Rocket travels that same route as the Classic Rattler Run, with picnic hampers available for purchase at the Platform No. 1 Café to complete the Rattler Picnic Train experience. A similar trip is available on Tuesdays (starting November, 12 th 2019), where one can enjoy the Rattler Tasting Train – a trip dedicated to the spectacular produce and producers from the region. The Mary Valley Rattler will often offer special event trains, Holiday Express Trains, food experiences and more, so be sure to follow along on the website and social pages to stay up to date. Leave plenty of time to explore the beautifully restored Gympie Station, arguably one of the most stylish and elaborate in the context of timber railway architecture. The station is home to a historical display, a gift shop, and the Platform No. 1 Café. It’s a magical trip into living history. We look forward to welcoming you on board! We have to tell you though, it may not be that relaxing as you probably won’t have to wait too long to get a bite. Fishing charters and Whale watching tours are also available and we are happy to help you with booking a fishing or whale adventure. Ph. 4125 4445

Choosing accommodation Resorts & Motels Are definitely the most commonly known type of accommodation. While it is commonly accepted they are expensive, the truth is resorts and motels can be a less expensive option. When looking for a resort and motel it may be best to contact them directly to compare deals, rates, packages and availability.

Apartment rentals If you’re staying for a longer period, looking for a rental is a good choice. With a rental you have most or all the amenities at a competitive price.

Break through in cancer Ground-breaking immune therapy promises to deliver vital evidence in the ght against cancer as researchers from the Centre for Cancer Biology open a new clinical trial using genetically engineered immune cells to treat solid cancers. The phase 1 clinical trial will test the feasibility and safety of CAR-T cells – genetically modied white blood cells harvested from a patient’s own blood with the unique ability to directly attack and kill cancers – to treat advanced solid tumours including, small cell lung cancer, sarcomas and triple negative breast cancer. The new clinical trial will allow researchers to learn more about how CAR-T cells interact with solid tumours in the hope that this form of immunebased therapy may one day treat a wide range of different cancers. UniSA’s Dr Tessa Gargett, a Cancer Council Beat Cancer Project Early Career Fellow from the Centre for Cancer Biology says, “Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells are a promising new technology in the eld of cancer immunotherapy. Essentially, CAR-T cells are super-powered immune cells which work by enlisting and strengthening the power of a patient's system to attack tumours. reiki, immune crystal healing, They’ve hadbalinese astounding results in treating some forms of massage, tarot chemotherapy-resistant blood cancers, but similar www.sacredmunay.com breakthroughs are yet to be achieved for solid cancers – contact vanessa 0431 012 595 that’s where this study comes in.” Further: sacredmunay@outlook.com www.unisa.edu.au

A place for the whole family

Howard Rail Station

Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20 km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night. From the 1840s to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders and Oxley had charted the coastline but the arrival of E.T. Aldridge and his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool and other primary produce and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. The Wharf precinct still has many of its original buildings.

The Bundaberg Rum Distillery , Australia’s most-awarded rum distillery, opened the doors to a new $8.5million Visitor Experience in August 2016, showcasing over 130 years of rich Australian spirit. Recently voted Australia’s best Brewery, Winery or Distillery Experience at the 2018 Australian Tourism Awards, the Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience is an attraction to tick off your bucket list. The Museum Experience Inside the Museum's self-guided tour, six 75,000 litre oak vats, that have previously matured thousands of litres of Bundaberg's finest rums, have been emptied and rebuilt, allowing visitors to walk through them in a unique sensory experience that showcases the proud and rich history behind Australia's favourite rum.

The Distillery Experience Get the full Bundaberg Rum experience; first by making your way through the immersive Bundaberg Rum Museum, and then meet up with one of the expert Distillery guides where you’ll continue the journey deep into the rich and golden heart of the fully operational Bundaberg Rum Distillery. Caution crossing creeks Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks. Large volumes of water create steep creek banks. Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries. Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

1. Drive economically

• A GRADE MECHANICS • AUTO LPG INSTALLATIONS - PETROL & DIESEL • CLUTCH, BRAKE & STEERING • MANUAL GEARBOX O/H

Around town, you’ll use less fuel if you: TRADING HOURS: Mon-Fri 7am-5pm Sat: By appointment only CLOSED PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

4128 2633 133 Torquay Rd, Scarness Q. 4655

Drive smoothly and try to maintain a steady speed. Manual, change up through the gears as soon as practical. Automatic, ease back slightly on the accelerator once at speed. Avoid peak hour and other heavy traffic where possible. Avoid engine idling for long periods.

On the freeway, you’ll use less fuel if you: Reduce speed - you can reduce your fuel consumption by as much as 25% by taking 20 km/h off your speed. Use cruise control if you’ve got it. Use your car’s air conditioner sparingly. Keep windows up and use the ventilation system when travelling over about 50 km/h, if your car doesn’t have air conditioning. If your car’s transmission has power and economy modes, use the economy mode to ensure the transmission up-shifts earlier. This also helps reduce wear and tear on your car’s brakes, tyres and the other mechanical parts. Saves on running costs too.

2. Service your car regularly Keep the engine correctly tuned. Keep filters in good condition. Keep the fuel and ignition systems in good working order. Regularly change the engine oil using the correct grade of oil.

3. Inflate tyres correctly Check your tyre pressure once a week, when the tyres are cold. Keep tyres inflated to a pressure slightly higher than that stated in the vehicle handbook, find the tyre pressure on the tyre placard, which is typically inside the glove box, on the driver’s door or on the fuel filler flap. Setting the tyre pressure slightly higher will aid in fuel economy and safer handling.

4. Check the wheel alignment Ensure the wheel alignment is correctly set and the brakes aren’t dragging, as increase rolling resistance will use more fuel.

5. Check your load If you can, reduce the amount of gear in your car. Things like golf clubs and toolboxes add unnecessary weight, which in turn increases fuel consumption. External attachments ie: roof racks will increase wind resistance and fuel use. If possible remove them when not in use; and when you are using them, load carefully to minimise wind resistance.

Some people think you should give way to vehicles approaching from the right on a roundabout, but:

Make sure you signal left as you exit and turn your indicator off after you've left the roundabout.

Turning left. Here's the way to do it. Approach the roundabout in the left lane or line of traffic. Then:

Turning Right. Approach the roundabout in the right lane or line of traffic, then signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you're ready to exit. Then:

Signal left before you exit the roundabout. The same rule applies if you intend driving beyond the right turn exit.

That's not the rule. You must give way to any vehicles already on the roundabout before you enter. It doesn't matter if a car is on your left or on your right.

Towing safety tips

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your car's handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the car's mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your car's handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move. Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it. * Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc.) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly. * Suspension - Towing puts extra strain on a car's suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing. * Reversing - There are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner. When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears.
