WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? Pictorial space is the simple flat image which cannot be movenment around from pluralistic viewpoints. As for Le Corbusier, it is “that which cannot be entered or circulated through; it is irremediably space viewed from a distance and is therefore eternally resigned to frontality”. The objects are all flat without depth. By changing color and texture, the distance and depth transform the real world to the appearance of the ideal one. In addition, according to him, “Real space comprehended only as the fruition of a lived perspevtive.” Hencepictorial space are related to subjectivity.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against? Le Corbusier’s paintings are emphasised on “rigid frontality of all objexts experienced from a distance”. The differentiation of frontality and rotation explain comparison between ideation and experience, which means the conceptual distance using black as shawdows helps to create inherently frontal according to the world. On the other hand, “it is these textural integers that appear against the ground of contour that defines the object tot which they belong.” He uses texture and shadows to show the surface from edge to edge.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection?

The main difference between Pictoriall space and projection is vanishing points. In axonometric the projectors are all parellel to each other, which means the vanishing points are infinity. However, the points are on the horizon in a perspective. So the projection which is an orthographical projection has a sense of reality and the perspective is more pictorial.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? The earliest description of axonometric projection is in the military period. The axonometric system is called a scientifically accurate method utilizing in military. In the eighteenth and the nineteenth century, the axonometric are taught in engineering schools and it developed regarding to the industrialization. The use of it were also extended to the scientific and mathematical progresses.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

Hint: How Detailed does the drawing need to be? I created lots of clouds in different colors to form the city of sky. There are also many balloons floating in the sky. To give a sense of soil, I drew many strips on the profile. On the bottom layer, I added corals, aquatic plants and also a fish tail to produce a underwater world. Water are dropped down from the edge and connect with the iceberg. There are a escalade made by pink cloud connecting two layers.

APPENDIX

I used a T-square, 45 degree set square, 4H pencil, eraser and tracing paper. I vset my drawings and originval mario world elevation at a 45 degree which give objects depth and project them up in the picture.

I used two elevation view to form my world with two tracing papers.

I traced the pencil drawings using 0.05 and 0.4 fineliner on the LED tracing pad.
