WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. There are three elementary types of developable sufaces which is defined as cylinders, cones and fangent surfaces. Cylinders are the surfaces formed by parallele lines. Cones are rolled up shapes containing a vertex such as triangles. Futhermore, tangent surfaces are the space curves which are formed by the tangent lines to development.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. An understandlign of developable surface makes architectural geometry build construction from flat material to three dimensional structure with several limitations. The understanding of developable surfaces could produce great works by only using simple shapes. For example, Maddison Architects made ‘Cloud Canopy’ in Federation square by using geometric structure to create clouds. This structure has a shape maintaining curves.

PANELLING PATTERN

I learned how to panel the grid by using ‘ptPanelGrid’ and the pattern is triangular.

3D panelling: And then I learned to use ‘‘ptoffsetpoints’ to built off set points upon the grid and use pyramid 1 as its pattern.

And I changed the pattern by pyramid 2 which gave me a totally different gird panel.

VARIABLE 3D PATTERN

Variable 1: I used a point attractor to form the flow of off set points using a triangle and a cylinder.

Variable 2: using the loft command.

Variable 3: I have even tried to use eight different varied panels to make it more changeful.

3D PANEL TEST PROTOTYPE & TEMPLATE

Here are two examples of my unroll templates.

The top photo correspond to the left top unroll template. And the bottom photo is a part of my panels beforing folding together.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? Digital fabrication is the progress to makemodels using 3D modelling software. Digital programs make 2D design drawing easily to edit and efficiently. This process has pushed the boundaries between two dimentional representaion and 3D design, which gives architects and designers much more chance to be creative.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design?

There are two reasons that folding is commonly used in the formal expression of building design. Firstly, Folding allows new spaces and new structure to be created, which ensure the accuracy of their 3D structure. Futhermore, folding method makes building design simple and direct. Meanwhile, the conceptual details could incorporate into the design progress effictively.

EXPLORING 3D PANELLING

I used three different panels to create my panelised lanscape, which are a higher and low triangular pyramid and a rectangular pyramid with an open side on the top. And i used four point attractors to form the whole flow of my off set points in order to make it variable.

UNROLL TEMPLATE OF YOUR FINAL MODEL

All unroll panel templates are flipped and labeled. I printed them in 1:1 size on A3 paper and then they can be easily traced on the card.

APPENDIX

I first cut down the unroll panel from printed A3 papers. fAnd then I set up my working place using an A3 cutting pad, a metal ruler, a scissor,a carving knife, a glue, several small bull nose clips and a pen knife.

I used clips to fix paper and card together to cut. To facilitatae the folding process, I use knife to cut lightly through the line.

After cutting them, I folded them up and glued them on.
