The rising cost of construction materials is increasing the cost of our homes, making them less affordable for the Habitat families. Over the last few years world markets have doubled the price of both steel and concrete. Plywood has risen by 100% compared to a few years ago and all building materials are becoming more and more expensive. “I felt it was important to help by contributing my small amount of money. I know that even a roll of wire can cost a few hundred dollars these days.�

The Blueprint Ventana Construction Rises to the Occasion Despite the red-hot pace of the construction industry in Greater Vancouver, Ventana Construction Corporation made a commitment earlier this year to make a financial donation and help build Phase 4 houses to the roof. Since then, they’ve been hard at work to fulfill that promise, giving their time and expertise to help us get off to a great start on the latest phase of the Burnaby build.

“We’ve had a few good years in the industry, and we wanted to give something back to the community,” Ventana director of projects Maurice Creagh said. “Working on the Habitat project was a new challenge for Ventana’s skilled workers, as they were leading volunteers instead of trained colleagues. It was a different experience from their usual environment, but our employees and Habitat’s volunteers worked well together.”

“If others in our industry were to donate to Habitat for Humanity and other worthy projects, imagine what we could accomplish,” Creagh added.

This help has been invaluable and a great example of how professionals can work in partnership with Habitat to build affordable housing. Thanks to everyone at Ventana for leading the way.

& Habitat for Humanity team up for energy Gold In May BC Hydro teamed up with several BC Habitat affiliates to help them meet the BC Hydro Power Smart Gold Label — the top tier for energy-efficient new houses.

Since then, BC Hydro has provided us with volunteer labour, financial sponsorship, and energy-efficient material, including upgraded appliances and light bulbs (supplied by Sylvania). “Everyone in British Columbia should be concerned with energy-efficiency and conservation goals. These houses go a long way to showing that it’s doable.” said Bob Elton, President and CEO, BC Hydro.
