Thank goodness for spring and our wonderful volunteers! Usually we look upon spring with gratitude and appreciation — poets and songwriters wax lyrical about new beginnings, artists paint cherry blossoms and gardeners gently nurture their seedlings in preparation for planting. Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver is eagerly anticipating and preparing for this spring… talk about renewal and new beginnings!

Welcome to Tim Wake, CEO First we extend a very warm welcome to our new CEO, Tim Wake, who comes to us with a wealth of affordable housing knowledge and experience. Read Tim’s message on Page 2.

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO, Tim Wake

A WARM WELCOME to our new Habitat partner families!

Let me introduce myself. I’m Tim Wake, newly arrived at Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver, and I have the privilege to work with this wonderful organization of volunteers, supporters, donors and staff.

You have probably seen them at our ReStores, the build site or any one of our many events! They are thrilled, enthusiastic and working incredibly hard to complete the 500 sweat equity hours required (one of the necessary qualifications) to purchase a Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver home.

Vancouver is still the best place to live in North America according to a global survey released by Mercer Consulting Outsourcing Investments in November 2011. It was also the most expensive city in Canada until it was surpassed by Toronto last year. When it comes to the cost of housing, Vancouver is still tops and the third highest in North America according to a Coldwell Banker study in 2011.

The Burnaby Phase Six Government Street families have been on a build site hiatus for a few months, while we wait for building permits, but that hasn’t stopped them from jumping in and helping us out anywhere and in any way. Thank you to Juliette & Mohsen, Nuro & Hassan, Lisa & Frank, Janine & Terry, Stephanie, Sapna & James and their families for all their hard work and dedication. They are well aware it’s the opportunity of a lifetime and well worth the effort!

The high cost of housing is felt at all levels, but is most acute for families and individuals with low and moderate incomes. These families are the focus of our work at Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. We are working with municipal governments and the private sector development community to develop programs and solutions. We’re putting ten families in new homes this year — six in our townhome project at 8745 Government Street in Burnaby and four at 60 West Cordova in downtown Vancouver.

Our latest “outside-the-box” initiative at 60 West Cordova has been in the works for almost two years and now, finally, has a face or should we say faces: Clayton, Jessica, John & Jolene will be embarking on exciting new beginnings as they take possession of their brand new condos this summer!

BC Home & Garden Show

Thank you to our generous supporters and volunteers who have enabled us to provide homes in the past. Your support has been outstanding. We need to do more and want to do more, but in order to do that we need to grow our contributions each year.

Thanks to Marketplace Events, we had a huge booth at the BC Home & Garden Show and we’ll have another one at the Vancouver Home & Design show in October!

By investing in affordable homeownership, we are investing in the strength and diversity of our community. We are creating housing that working families can afford, and that provides the foundation for them to lead happy, healthy and productive lives, right here in Vancouver.

Akina Lam was the lucky winner of the draw prize from entries at the BC Home & Garden Show. Thank you to John Bennett of Mackenzie Financial for donating two hockey tickets, the Delta Vancouver Suites for a night in a deluxe suite and the Donnelly Group for gift certificates good at any of their eight restaurants!

We need your help. Together, we can change lives, build hope, foster family stability and maintain Vancouver’s diversity and desirability. Thanks for supporting Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver!

THANK YOU to our hard working Katimavik volunteers! We are truly grateful to have four Katimavik students working with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver from January to June. Katimavik is Canada’s premier national youth learning through volunteer service organization. Since its foundation in 1977, more than 30,000 young Canadians have participated in Katimavik programs. The organization’s objectives are to positively impact youth by contributing to their development through volunteering in the community and by exposing them to regional, cultural and linguistic diversity. Katimavik provides young Canadians with the opportunity to volunteer in community development initiatives across the country and develop valuable, transferable employment skills. It is open and accessible to all young Canadians between the ages of 17 and 21. Katimavik volunteers get handson experience in independent living by learning to successfully maintain and run a household with ten other motivated youth from across the country. Working within a traditional school calendar year, Katimavik volunteers complete their 6-month program in one semester and can be back at school the following term without missing a beat. Please see www.katimavik.org for more information.

When an outside person or group raises money for us, we call that a Third-Party Fundraiser — plan one today! Maybe you would like to learn new skills to prepare for the job market, or use your experience and time now that you’ve retired — then volunteering at our ReStores could do the trick. If you have a hankering to hammer and see the shell of a house become a home before your very eyes, sign up to volunteer at our build site in Burnaby. Working together in a team environment, many companies, organizations, schools and faith-based groups love the camaraderie and challenge of a day-long build experience. Our popular Sponsor-A-Build Day is a great way to contribute volunteer time and dollars to help fund construction costs.
