Expertise FOUNDATION AND INSPIRATION HGA’s founders were passionate in their belief that architecture could inspire learning, stimulate creativity and strengthen communities. That passion, along with their dedication to exceptional design and extraordinary ability to connect with clients, led to HGA’s robust reputation for designing educational, cultural and community-focused buildings. Today, HGA’s dedicated museum design studio is a tight-knit collective of architects, designers and engineers who thrive in a highly collaborative, creative environment, rather than as individual design stars. We love what we do, and are driven to create surprising and enduring work for our clients. Our inspiration comes from the relationships and understanding of mission and vision that we develop with our clients. We are also fueled by our own personal connections to culture, community and place. Above all, we are honored to play a role in helping our clients make an enduring impact on our world by creating designs that meld beauty, originality, and inspiration. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH HGA? Working with HGA becomes a partnership grounded in collaboration, trust, and communication. Along the way we strive to learn more about you than you perhaps even know yourself, as we deep dive into the essential elements of your institution’s mission, goals and hopes for your project. We ask essential questions at the right time and listen profoundly to your answers. We will earn the right to challenge you. Usually, there is a lot of fun to be had along the way. And ultimately, HGA will deliver a project that works, lasts and inspires.

“The museum has quickly become the go-to place in downtown Winona. There seems to be a niche the new addition is filling for rehearsal dinners, business meetings, group lunches, craft sales, 50th anniversary parties and even end of life services.”

—Mark F. Peterson, Executive Director, Winona County Historical Society

Planning and Design HGA’s museum practice studio is a highly skilled, focused group of architects, planners and engineers who have learned the specialized technical requirements of museum design. We have gone through the learning curve on many museum and cultural center projects, ranging from world class art museums to hands-on learning environments for people of all ages. Because our experience spans the country, we are able to benchmark among similar institutions to help our clients understand what their peers are doing. We provide technical expertise to execute quality design concepts with buildable, cost effective approaches and integrated engineering solutions for: A. Exterior design that reflect your objectives, whether an iconic statement to create a new identity or a contextually sensitive approach to enhance your existing environs.

E. Collection protection spaces that are designed for the preservation, storage, repair and research of objects and archives.

B. Visitor experience needs that include welcoming and accessible amenities for food services, retail space, patron service areas and integrated wayfinding/communication.

F. Lecture/auditorium spaces that provide multi-use performance and gathering venues.

C. Permanent and special exhibition spaces that provide flexible, technically advanced gallery space for a broad range of exhibits and related uses.

G. Administrative/operations areas that provide flexible, creative and functional back of house space now and into the future. H. Technical facility considerations such as temperature and humidity controls, air quality, power/lighting systems, fire and security systems, vibration and acoustics, etc.

D. Education/outreach amenities that engage and enrich your visitors’ experiences and encourage return visits.

“I think people are going to notice we have world-class collections here and that we have a world-class facility. I think it’s the best I’ve ever seen.”

—Jack Dalrymple, Governor of North Dakota

Museum Innovation Designing extraordinary cultural facilities requires expertise, imagination and innovation. Over the past six decades, HGA has developed a reputation for bringing these elements together to great success. All of the experts on our multidisciplinary project teams—architects, engineers, interior designers and specialists—understand the unique requirements for museums and work to provide options for solutions in the early design stages, saving time and money. As museums have evolved, so has our expertise. We are constantly researching, reaching out to leaders in the field, attending our clients’ professional conferences, and learning from them directly about the future of the field. We understand the current economic, programmatic and sustainability challenges and opportunities that organizations need to address, and we work with our clients to envision the future. Buildings must be designed with the long-view in mind, able to embrace traditional forms as well as be flexible enough to encourage and support what’s next. After 63 years, HGA remains in the vanguard, able to respond to these changes with uncomplicated, elegant designs while incorporating the highly technical requirements needed to support them.
