Baby Jet Star turns one
I
n April last year, Baby Jet Star was safely delivered on a Jetstar Asia flight when the mother went into labour unexpectedly after landing in Yangon. One year on, we are happy to report that both mother and child continue to be well as Jet Star turns one. We are proud of how our crew has also continued to keep in touch with the family in Myanmar. Please join me in wishing Baby Jet Star a happy birthday! Jetstar is also proud to announce that we are the first and only low-fare carrier to have a codeshare partnership with India’s second-largest airline, Jet Airways. This partnership will enhance connectivity for passengers travelling between India and Singapore to 11 destinations in Southeast Asia and Australia. This arrangement now increases
Jetstar Asia’s codeshare and interlines to more than 25, enhancing our Changi hub presence. If you are travelling soon, we encourage you to try the Jetstar mobile boarding pass option during your online check-in. Once you choose the option, you will receive an SMS to download the pass that will replace your physical boarding pass. It’s convenient and it works. The mobile boarding pass option is also available on Jetstar Asia flights from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, KL, Penang and Phuket. Let us know your experience. Thank you for choosing to fly with Jetstar.

One of my favourite things about travel is seeing all the different cultural traditions
A
pril is one of the most popular times of year for travellers to take a break or embark on their next adventure. One of my favourite things about travel is getting out and seeing all the different cultural and holiday traditions across our network. For example, in mid-April, Easter will be celebrated in many parts of the world with a number of public holidays to mark the season and open up time to spend with friends and family. This year more than 630,000 customers will fly across our network over the Easter period and take advantage of our low fares
to 85 exciting and very different destinations. In Australia, many travellers make the most of the Easter long weekend, and with 400 domestic flights each day, and international destinations just hours away, it’s easy to see why. During April, travellers in Bali may have a chance to witness the colourful Galungan festivities, one of the more important religious periods observed by locals, where families get together to commemorate and pay respects to relatives who have passed on. In Vietnam, you may experience the conclusion of the Perfume Pagoda Festival, a Buddhist pilgrimage to the Huong Pagoda in the Huong Tich mountains where pilgrims seek blessings of happiness and prosperity in the coming year. Whether you’re on your way to explore the bustling markets of Singapore or ride the waves in Hawaii, we hope you enjoy your trip with us today.

NATURAL BEAUTY BESIDES HER MANY SPAS AND SALONS, CYNTHIA CHUA, QUEEN OF SINGAPORE’S BEAUTY INDUSTRY, NOW HAS A PRODUCT RANGE MADE WITH PLANTS GROWN ON THE ROOFTOP OF A SHOPPING CENTRE – YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT 12
T
o say that Cynthia Chua is a veteran of Singapore’s beauty industry is an understatement. In 1996, at the mere age of 25, she opened her first lifestyle outlet, Spa Esprit in Holland Village. In 2002, she introduced the little-known Brazilian waxing treatment to Singapore with her waxing parlour, Strip. This was followed by the opening of brow grooming salon Browhaus in 2004. That same year, she started to expand overseas in cities like London, New York, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok and Penang. In between, the aromatherapy enthusiast found time to launch a restaurant empire, a grooming salon for men, and a beauty grocery store, Beauty Emporium, all in Singapore. In 2015, she came up with the idea of making beauty products with locally grown herbs and flowers. The 46-year-old started a sustainable ‘beauty garden’ on the rooftop of Raffles City Shopping Centre, and, earlier this year, launched her Farm To Beauty skincare range.
Insider I IN PROFILE
When we started out, we grew single crops on a big scale but unfortunately they succumbed to pests. We soon learnt to grow a variety of plants at different times to prevent them from being wiped out all at once. Growing plants on the rooftop was also
Tell us about y Farm To Beauty. Farm To Beauty products ucts ts are made with ingredients grown and harvested from our rooftop beauty garden at Raffles City Shopping Centre. I’m proud to be able to give our customers a bit of Singapore in every bottle, but more importantly, I want them to discover the beauty benefits that nature can offer.
Q
Growing your own botanicals for beauty is a lost tradition
How do you go about creating a product for your range? We work closely with herbalists and our partners at Edible Garden City, an urban farming consultancy. We decide on the product based on what we can grow in our climate and we experiment from there. I never imagined that we could grow calendula in Singapore, for instance, but after many attempts, we made it happen, and now you can experience the benefits of the herb in our Om, Calendula! Calming Cream. It has a wonderful, soothing effect on skin.
Q
What other products are in the Farm To Beauty range? We have an overnight mask called A Cool Aloe Cooling Gel – this contains aloe vera, which works brilliantly to calm irritated skin, [especially] after waxing. Our Ease Up and Calm Down drinking teas use ingredients like Mexican tarragon, passionflower, lemon

balm and mint – each having a specific effect on the body. Passionflower, for example, has a sedative effect, while mint aids digestion. The products are handcrafted in small batches – why is this important to you? It gives us more control over their quality and allows us to monitor the effectiveness of the ingredients. The more we understand the ingredients, the easier it is for us to improve the product. And, if a product has been made by hand, you know that a lot of love and care has gone into it. Did you face any challenges getting these plants to thrive in Singapore’s warm, humid and unpredictable climate? Farm To Beauty was three years in the making.
challenging because it can get pretty hot and windy up there. At first we built a netting structure to shade the more delicate plants, but it didn’t last long with the strong winds so we started growing large fruit trees instead. As the soil tends to dry up easily, we also applied a mulching layer to protect against soil-water loss and
Farm To Beauty’s rooftop garden
installed an automated irrigation system to keep our herbs hydrated. Is urban farming sustainable? There are many passionate urban farmers around, but if we can’t monetise their crops then of course it will be hard to keep our local farming movement going. So we’re not just making quality beauty products; with Edible Garden City, we’re supporting a group that champions farming in land-scarce and importdependent Singapore.
Q
What are your longterm plans for Farm To Beauty? I hope that Farm To Beauty evolves from an urban farming initiative to an agricultural movement. That would be taking me back to my roots as my first business, Spa Esprit, originated from my love for aromatherapy, herbs and flower essences. Growing your own botanicals for beauty and healing is a lost tradition and I want very much to resurrect that.

TRAVELLING IS A WAY FOR ME to enjoy the food, shopping and nightlife overseas, and for me to catch up with my friends who live abroad. Some unusual things that I pack include my full-size Tempur pillow because it is so comfortable to sleep on. I’m also rather ‘oldschool’ and must have my handkerchiefs with me. So, if I am travelling for two weeks, I have 14 –
one for every day. Other essentials include an essence of chicken tonic drink which revitalises me in the mornings, a back massager because my lower back aches easily, and a candle or room spray to scent the hotel room so that it makes me feel more at home. Lastly, I have my crystal wand, given to me by my friend. I find that whenever I place
it in my drink for about 10 minutes, water or wine tastes better. The wand is said to be made of amethyst, red garnet and clear quartz which reportedly balance your wellbeing. And if there’s something that I love buying, it’s the Kamillosan herbal mouth spray from Bangkok. It soothes throat irritations and minor coughs, and my friends now swear by it too.

ike many ancient traditions around the world, the popularity of Filipino ancient healing arts, known locally as hilot, has tapered off. Historically, a manghihilot (hilot practitioner) was sought out to treat almost every ailment – from broken bones to diabetes to coughs and colds. After diagnosing an illness or imbalance through touch alone, listening to the patient’s pulse, and/or laying banana leaves on the skin, the

Because the approach of hilot is built on a belief in spirit as the source of healing as well as utilising the elements of fire, water, air and earth, it has, in modern times, often been dismissed as mere quackery. Rediscovering a lost art It was only in the early 2000s that Catherine Brillantes-Turvill, the founding president of the Spa Association of the Philippines, worked with hilot experts Dr Bibiano Fajardo and Dr Jimmy Galvez Tan to define the Filipino healing arts and prove the science behind them. Filipino healing arts are largely traditions that are passed on by word of mouth, therefore, their quest took them to the far reaches of the Philippines. “We sent people all over the country to meet healers and learn from them,” says BrillantesTurvill. “In the Mountain Province, we discovered dagdagay which is an ancient method of foot

As an advocate for Filipino heritage and wellness, BrillantesTurvill set up Nurture Wellness Village in Tagaytay almost 16 years ago. This holistic mountain retreat encompasses cosy hotel rooms and villas, a restaurant, organic farm, spa and wellness centre. More importantly, however, Nurture was a perfect platform to promote hilot and other Filipino ancient healing arts. A section of Nurture’s organic farm is called Botika ni Lola (grandmother’s pharmacy). It’s here where you’ll find an array of plants that have been used by local herbalists for centuries alongside plants that have been approved by the Department of Health for their therapeutic benefits. Nanay Lina Bay, Nurture’s resident albulario (herbalist), knows each of the plants here intimately and is an expert at extracting the healing properties of each. The plants include akapulko, which can be applied to

The need for heritage healing As people move away from provincial life and embrace a more westernised city life and as modern life becomes more chaotic and stressful, could it be that Filipino ancient healing arts are needed now more than ever? “It’s a waste (when) so many young people go into the city or go abroad and they forget about their heritage,”

losed off from the rest of the world for nearly 60 years, Myanmar has long intrigued writers, artists and travellers. When 19-year-old Australian Anna Swain stood on the Thai side of a bridge on Myanmar’s border in 1990 and was told she was not allowed to cross, it sparked a life-long fascination with the country. “Perhaps it was not being allowed in (I’ve never liked being told “no”) or maybe it was simply the mystery of an unknown land,” she says. But the opening up of the country and the more recent encouragement of tourism (despite travel being restricted to specific regions and cities) meant the call of a visit was impossible to resist. So, in 2014, Anna and her family set off on a six-and-a-half week journey through the country.

Going through these images on her return home to Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia, she realised that if she returned to Myanmar with a high-quality camera and a single-minded photography focus, she might be able to produce something really special. Six weeks later she was back in Myanmar, new Canon 6D camera in hand, on a mission to capture the country. Over a week she snapped more than 7,500 images. “I never staged a photo,” explains Anna, who is a self-taught photographer. “I would always ask if I could take a picture. Only two people said no. ast deserts, crocodileinfested wetlands, cascading waterfalls, ancient Aboriginal rock art and exotic wildlife aplenty – the rich red landscapes of Australia’s Northern Territory are straight off the pages of a beautifully illustrated storybook. For starters, it has the country’s largest national park. Covering 20,000sq km (that’s roughly half the size of Switzerland!), the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park found international fame after being used as a backdrop for scenes in the iconic movie Crocodile Dundee. Be awed by the masses of spectacular flood planes and sandstone escarpments, and countless plant and animal species. Litchfield is another local favourite. This 1,500sq ft park encompasses much of the natural splendour that is the Tabletop Range – a sandstone plateau surrounded by cliffs – and boasts waterfalls plunging into pristine pools. Whether you’re a firsttimer to the ‘Top End’ or a seasoned visitor, the capital city of Darwin is the ideal point to explore. There’s plenty of fun to be had, particularly at the newly redeveloped Waterfront Precinct – a AU$1 billion project that
took 15 years to complete. Here, you can work up a sweat on the running paths and bike trails, before cooling off in the wave-pool or the saltwater lagoon, where locals swim without the fear of becoming a meal for one of the resident saltwater crocodiles that populate the harbour. But if you prefer, you can also come face to face with these fearsome creatures right in the city’s main shopping district at Crocosaurus Cove. Home to some of the world’s biggest captive saltwater crocodiles, this attraction lets brave visitors lower themselves into the water in a transparent glass cylinder with the maneating reptiles in an aptly named ‘Cage of Death’ experience. Darwin’s importance during the conflict of World War II can be seen in the city’s nine military heritage sites. Two of the best are the Darwin Military Museum and the impressive underground
The park boasts waterfalls plunging into pristine pools Oil Storage Tunnels, which were constructed to protect oil supplies from being bombed by the Japanese. While there’s undoubtedly plenty to see during the day, the city comes alive in different ways once the scorching heat of the day subsides.

A NIGHT OWL’S GUIDE TO DARWIN Movies under the stars A few minutes’ walk along the esplanade and you’ll find the open-air Deckchair Cinema. Set on the edge of the harbour, the venue runs seven nights weekly during the dry season (April to November), showing a variety of films, with double features usually scheduled on Friday and Saturday evenings. Get cosy in one of the reclining deckchairs and pack a picnic, or take advantage of the licensed bar serving food on site. Watching the sun set over the ocean while munching on popcorn is definitely one of the most memorable cinematic experiences you’ll have.

Two kilometres from the city centre, it can be reached easily via a walk or a short bus ride. Hundreds of stalls beckon with jewellery, clothing, Indigenous paintings, pottery and, of course, crocodile and kangaroo paraphenalia. Just like Darwin itself, the markets are a bona fide melting pot of cultures. The best example of this is in the mouth-watering array of food stalls, which serve up every kind of cuisine, from Australian and Thai, to Indian and Brazilian.
Eat up People of more than 50 nationalities call Darwin home, which is partly why the city is rapidly emerging as one of Australia’s top foodie destinations. And it’s a changing one too, with a new eatery opening almost every week.

✪ ARRIVE AT THE MAGIC HOUR The early bird catches the worm or, in this case, the spectacular sunset view that such restaurants offer. Arrive by 6.30pm. Sunset time varies between 6.45pm and 7.15pm, depending on the time of year, according to Dennis Maulbetsch, sales and marketing executive (Asia) of Luke Mangan and Company which runs the Salt grill and Sky bar. ✪ DRESS FOR THE OCCASION Chances are, you will have to leave your flipflops and exercise gear at home. Most of the restaurants in this story have a smart casual or stylish chic dress code, which means no slippers, shorts or bermudas. The dress code for Jaan is ‘smart elegant’ which means long pants and covered shoes for men.

are known to be lengthy, multi-course affairs where diners take time to enjoy and savour their food. Keeping close to its French roots, Jaan does not have á la carte offerings but focuses instead on multi-course menus. We’d suggest going for the sevencourse Signatures lunch menu (S$158++) and 10-course Signatures dinner menu (S$298++), featuring seasonal and sustainable produce from around the globe. Noteworthy dishes on the menu include the Summer Violin Zucchini, an exquisite dish of Italian zucchini paired with burnt romero pepper, Cévennes onion and French chillies, as well as rainbow trout from Nersac, Western France, which is cured in a maple syrup, sea salt and Tellicherry marinade and paired with heirloom beetroot. Jaan boasts an extensive wine list of nearly 500 different labels from Old World and New World wines. It also includes a full range of Krug champagnes which you can pair with a specially created menu.

CÉ LA VI: Communal
dining with city views THE VIEW: Perched atop the landmark
SkyPark Observation Deck of the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) integrated resort, Cé La Vi offers 360-degree panoramic views of the city’s skyline and the Straits of Singapore. Floor-toceiling glass panels in its multi-tiered indoor dining area let you enjoy a view of the gorgeous sunset wherever you are seated. Topping it all off is the spectacular visual treat from the daily laser light and water shows that run at 8pm and 9.30pm at MBS.
WHAT TO TASTE: Modern Asian plates – think classic recipes with a contemporary twist – are designed for sharing and served in a communal dining style that encourages everyone at the table to sample everything. Signatures include the roasted lemongrass chicken (S$34++) infused
Singapore’s tallest restaurant THE VIEW: This
with lemongrass and a seasoning blend of eggplant, zucchini and kaffir lime, and the grilled lamb ribs (S$48++), which are first braised and then marinated overnight with hoisin sauce and orange juice. Carb lovers will enjoy the marinated angel hair (S$22++), which is tossed with tobiko (fish roe) and a pinch of spring onions. For an upscale restaurant, its set lunch menus are affordably priced from S$38++ per person for a threecourse meal. However, a minimum spend of S$80++ per person is required for dinner.
lifestyle destination at 282m above sea level spans three levels and overlooks the iconic skyscrapers against the Marina Bay skyline. At this height, you’ll also be able to catch a glimpse of the Singapore Flyer, Chinatown, Singapore River and Boat Quay. The restaurant’s main dining area has just six tables by its windows, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to make an advance booking, preferably for the first dinner seating.

5 ZAFFERANO:
Posh Italian nosh THE VIEW: At 43 storeys

WHAT TO TASTE: Made with ingredients from Italian growers, the dishes here are a modern take
on the classic flavours of Italy. Signatures include a decadent medley of foie gras, sous-vide honey pear, fresh berries and dark chocolate (S$32++), as well as poached and pan-seared Sardinian octopus served with roasted vegetables and salmoriglio dressing (S$42++), which is a Sicilian condiment of lemon juice, olive oil, minced garlic, oregano and parsley. What’s Italian cuisine without pairing it with a glass of good wine? Luckily, Zafferano offers a wine list of more than 250 premium labels from around the world including Piedmont, Tuscany and Veneto, as well as a variety of vintages. You may also bring your own favourite bottle on Saturday evenings without being charged a corkage fee (conditions apply).

STRAIGHT TO GATE IN RECORD TIME

Happy birthday VALERIE! The Sim family’s holiday to Phuket got off to a great start as we threw a surprise mid-flight for mum Valerie. The crew arranged a cake, a hamper and a Jetstar greeting card, and got the pilot to make a special announcement, to the cheers of 179 passengers on board. We certainly hope Valerie and family enjoyed the early birthday celebration, and had a smashing school holiday in Phuket. Want to celebrate an occasion the next time you fly with us? Share with us what you have in mind at jetstarasiamarketing@jetstar.com and we might just be able to whip up a memorable inflight surprise for your loved ones.
How long do you usually take to go from the moment you reach Singapore’s Terminal 1, to the departure gate of your Jetstar flight? More than 50 competition contestants recently proved that with brisk walking skills and quick action, the journey can be completed in no time. On Friday 24 March, we turned the foyer of The Cathay building into a challenge ground, where participants had to complete three tasks before they could go straight-to-gate in order to win a three-day, two-night holiday to Phuket departing the same evening. See our Facebook page for event highlights, and to find out who won.
Get your walk on!
Do note that arrangements are subject to flight duration and on board safety requirements, and not all requests can be accommodated.
WELCOMING MORE QANTAS PASSENGERS Jetstar Asia and Qantas have expanded codeshare arrangements, giving customers more choice and greater frequencies for their flights to Asia. With the addition of 142 flights operated by Jetstar Asia, the number of codeshares has increased to 349, allowing Qantas passengers to fly from Australia to destinations such as Surabaya or Yangon, via Singapore, on a single booking.

SAFETY, SECURITY & COMFORT Carry-on baggage Liquids, aerosols or gels (LAGs) must be in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. Containers must be placed in a transparent resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity not exceeding one litre.
Safety first Please ask the cabin crew for an infant seatbelt if your child is under two years old. Return the infant seatbelt to our cabin crew upon disembarkation. Sleeping on the aircraft floor is not permitted. Please read the safety instruction card in your seat pocket, noting emergency exits and location of life jackets. Please watch the safety

from the lower legs. During your flight, move your legs and feet three or four minutes per hour, and move about.
Cabin pressure Smoking Government regulations prohibit smoking on all flights. There are smoke detectors in all toilets and penalties for regulation breaches.
The importance of blood circulation and muscle relaxation during flights Compression stockings can assist in preventing swelling of the ankles and feet, and they may improve the blood return to the body
To “clear” your ears, try swallowing and/or yawning. When you are flying with an infant, give them a dummy or feed them during the aircraft’s descent. Sucking and swallowing will help the infant equalise the pressure in their ears.
Cabin humidity / dehydration Low humidity in the aircraft cabin can cause drying of the nose, throat and eyes, and can irritate wearers of contact lenses.
Do: • Drink water frequently. • Drink coffee, tea and alcohol only in moderation. • Remove contact lenses if your eyes are irritated. • Use a moisturiser to refresh skin.
Jetstar security policy Jetstar has a strict policy on denying boarding to any passengers who are inappropriate in flight or on ground in comments or behaviour. Jetstar does not accept any inappropriate comments as “jokes”. All matters are referred to relevant authorities for prosecution. Jetstar will seek to recover all costs incurred as a result of inflight incidents from those involved.

The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest is… The historic town of Hoi An (pictured above), known for its eclectic display of architecture, ranging from Chinese
VIETNAM
shophouses and temples to colourful French colonial buildings. If you’re only there for a day, what’s one must-do? Head for the water as the beaches are great surf spots. Non Nuoc and My Khe are beautiful beaches. A secret place in the city that I love going to…
Chessboard Peak on Son Tra Mountain, where a statue of a deity sitting alone and facing a chessboard can be found. On days when the skies are clear, panoramic views of the city reward those who make the more-than-600m ascent. The best place for local eats is… Ba Duong, one of the best places for banh xeo, a fried rice flour crepe stuffed with bean sprouts, shrimp and mung beans.
The most scenic spot in the city is… Hai Van Pass. As you wind up the mountainous roads, the views of the sea are spectacular. The best place for a selfie or groufie is… Ngu Hanh Son, more commonly known as Marble Mountains. They are a cluster of marble and limestone hills with many caves, tunnels and shrines. The best place to go shopping in my city is… Han Market has hundreds of stalls and offers a fascinating glimpse into the local culture.

The best place to go shopping in my city is… There are so many shopping malls in Hong Kong, but if you’re looking for something that’s a bit different from all the usual brands, perhaps
CHINA
PMQ will excite you. It offers local designers and labels you might not have heard of yet. A secret place in the city that I love going to… The Chi Lin Nunnery in Diamond Hill. It’s easily accessible via the MTR and offers a serenity that can hardly be found anywhere else
in this bustling city. Bring your camera for some Instagram-worthy shots. The best place for local eats is… Lin Heung Teahouse for dim sum. It’s a very local and raw experience. Being one of the oldest teahouses in Hong Kong, it’s definitely an eyeopener. The best place for a drink or meal with a view? Sevva is perfect for a pre-dinner drink. It has a huge terrace and offers a nice view of Central. What’s a good souvenir to buy and where do I get it? Hong Kong is all about
food, so take home some Chinese egg tarts. The best ones are at Tai Cheong Bakery on Lyndhurst Terrace. Be prepared to queue up. The best place for a selfie or groufie is… If you’re hunting for Instagram backdrops, head on over to the Sai Wan Swimming Shed. You might have to queue up for your shot though.

CAMBODIA
A secret place in the city that I love going to is… Mr Grill Restaurant is quite isolated from the bustle of the main areas, and has a nice garden and a friendly atmosphere. The best place for a selfie or groufie is… Angkor Wat is undoubtedly the best,
especially during sunrise and sunset. But it is very crowded and you’ll be lucky to get a selfie with only you in it! Inflight I TRAVEL TALES
THE YOUNG ONES Flying with kids is no child’s play, even with online tips. Just ask Mag Teo, who has to survive a trip with her brood of four without her hubby
76
THE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PRIORITY boarding comes on, and I feel slightly smug as I see families rush to the front while I stop my brood from moving forward. I’d read somewhere online that I shouldn’t board early with a baby – why subject her to more antsy time in an enclosed space? I immediately regret my decision when my preschooler tugs at my top and does her pee-pee shuffle. The baby, in an I-can-do-anythingbetter-than-you flourish, releases a chart-topper of a fart that would make a diaper blush. By which time we are queuing with the rest of the passengers; me cursing myself for seeking, and trusting, internet advice. Once on board, I abandon my boys and dash to the restroom with the girls, thanking the aviation gods for the vacant loo. The older teen, with all the wisdom of his 17 years, has had the foresight to preload his music and anime series onto his mobile phone. We will neither see his face nor hear from him until we land.
The two compatriots belt out an unwelcome aerial anthem The younger teen, with all the wiles of his 13 years, has had the chutzpah to claim my iPad as his own. We will neither see his face nor hear from him too... until he realises it’s preloaded only with Korean dramas. As the plane takes off, the five-year-old is chatty and curious. I spend a good hour
fielding her questions on aerodynamics and barf bags, wondering when she would nod off. I’d read online that a wellfed child would sleep on a plane, and she’s had a hearty meal before our flight. The littlest one has been nursed to sleep but a wail from another cherub across
the aisle rouses her, compelling her to respond in kind, the two compatriots belting out an unwelcome aerial anthem. Her sister suddenly looks a little green around the gills, and most of her lunch makes a hasty exit, landing on my jeans. (Note to self again: do not listen to internet advice.) With two hours left, I guess I’ll just have to fly by the seat of my pants.
