BREAKFAST AT AH MENG’S MEET A DURIAN-LOVING ORANGUTAN AT JUNGLE BREAKFAST WITH WILDLIFE AT SINGAPORE ZOO IT’S NOT EVERY DAY (or everywhere) that you can have breakfast with charismatic orangutans. But you can enjoy this immersive experience at the Singapore Zoo. Held at Ah Meng Restaurant, the globally acclaimed, award-winning Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife gives you a view of the attraction’s iconic lush vegetation as well as an unbeatable view of its famous orangutans. While you indulge in a buffet spread of both Western and local breakfast dishes, you also have the opportunity to have your photo taken with the animals. There is an ongoing commentary on the plight of these
intelligent apes as the Singapore Zoo, which has successfully bred the largest number of orangutans in captivity in the world, hopes to reinforce the message of wildlife conservation. The zoo is home to 26 orangutans, eight of which are Sumatran while the rest are of the Bornean species. The zoo is also the first in the world with free-ranging areas where the animals can swing, climb and play in a treetop habitat.
The new gen One of these orangutans is Ah Meng, formerly known as Ishta. The first Ah Meng, Ishta’s grandmother who passed away in 2008,
was Singapore’s first non-human tourism ambassador and brought worldwide fame to the zoo. Being a critically endangered Sumatran orangutan, she also helped to create more interest in the plight of her species in the wild. The new Ah Meng was chosen to be the zoo’s latest animal ambassador as she bears a strong resemblance to her famous grandmother. She loves durians and is sociable, affectionate and patient. Ah Meng meets visitors four times weekly at Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife, in addition to selected photography sessions.
Book your wild breakfast Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife is held 9am–10.30am daily. It costs S$35 for adults and S$25 for children aged 6–12 years. Singapore Zoo admission charges of S$33 for adults and S$22 for children aged 3–12 years apply. Animal appearances are between 9.30am and 10am and the last buffet seating is at 10am. t started as a website, then as a pop-up store in January 2014. Today, Naiise (pronounced “nice”) can be found in six locations across Singapore, including an 8,500-sq ft flagship store at The Cathay. Founder Dennis Tay’s love for design was shaped during his previous role as the owner of a creative agency, and he is proud to now share his passion with others. Naiise is famous for its quirky and eye-catching products – think biscuit-shaped lamps and rocking horses – that range from home accessories and fashion to food. About 60% to 70% of the products are designed or created in Singapore, making Naiise both an early champion of local design and a popular destination for tongue-in-cheek souvenirs.

Both are available at Naiise. Surprise them!
Q
Our local brands take us back to our childhood How did Naiise start? Back when I was running a creative agency, I met many talented local designers who wanted to create and market their own products but were afraid shoppers wouldn’t be interested. I started Naiise for two reasons – one, I wanted to give these artisans a platform to showcase and sell their designs and give them exposure on an international level. And two, I felt we could all do with more well-designed products in our lives.
Q 16
Why is good design so important to you? It adds colour to our lives. It also solves problems, inspires innovation and makes life simpler.
Q
Naiise is known for products that evoke happiness. Should good design make you happy? Yes! Design doesn’t exist

Inspiring happiness in our customers is very important to us and guides us in everything we do. Tell us about the Singapore-themed products at Naiise. The demand for Singapore-designed and -made goods is on the rise as more people become aware of our local talent. Many of our local brands reference our culture and take us back to our childhood, like our ‘White Rabbit’ cushions, for example, which resemble the candy many Singaporeans grew up with; USB lamps shaped like iced-gem biscuits; and cups that look like they came from an old-

They’re inspiring, they fulfil some purpose in your life, they’re functional and they put a smile on your face. We also truly care about nurturing our designers and building our creative community, not just in Singapore but regionally.

WHEN WE GO ON FAMILY TRIPS, my brothers and I usually share a suitcase and even our clothing – so we can have twice the wardrobe with the same amount of luggage space. Some people take photos on holiday; I draw to remember the places I’ve been. It’s also why I collect sketchbooks. My favourite is this leatherbound one I got at a street market in China.
It’s tiny and not the most functional – but it’s so beautiful. Besides pens and pencils, I always bring gold acrylic paint as it gives an ordinary pencil sketch a polished, dreamy look – my signature style. My leather jacket and Dr. Martens are also musts in my luggage, because the jacket makes any outfit look more presentable when I have to meet people or play gigs, while the waterproof
Dr. Martens are great for walking in. They also give basic outfits a slight edge without making you look as if you’re trying too hard. I always pack my handphone and headphones so I can plug into Spotify Premium. I lose my mind when I’m travelling and don’t have music to listen to. PEACE IN A CUP A MORE CONTEMPLATIVE WAY FOR TRAVELLERS TO APPRECIATE JAPAN IS TO TAKE PART IN THE COUNTRY’S TRADITIONAL TEA CEREMONY – OR CHADO AS IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN
H
olidaying in Japan can be frantic because of the seemingly endless options of good food and shopping. If this pace of indulgence is tiring, slowing down a notch with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony could be just your cup of tea.
Thoughtful tea The traditional Japanese tea ceremony (also known as chado, sado or chanoyu) is essentially
a meticulous ritual of preparing and serving powdered green tea (matcha) whisked with hot water that has been warmed by a charcoal
hearth to guests. It is generally served with a small sweet, such as red bean mochi rice cake. This ceremony was perfected in the 16th century by a tea master called Sen no Rikyū. He developed the ceremonial procedure and rules, the tea utensils and teahouse architecture based on the Zen Buddhist principle of wabi sabi, which is essentially an appreciation of life’s transient beauty. “The Japanese tea ceremony is the epitome
According to Ayako Fukui, owner of Tea Ceremony Waraku in Osaka, wellbehaved tea ceremony guests: ● Wear white socks in the tea room. This is because white represents purity, which is the ideal state of mind one should be in when taking part in the Japanese tea ceremony. ● Ask the host about the tea utensils, such as where they are from and who made them. Better still, make known your appreciation of the beautiful aesthetics of the tea utensils or tea room. ● Apologise for drinking the tea or eating a snack by announcing to everyone in the room “o-saki ni”, which means “excuse me for going before you”. There are many other rules, Fukui adds, but visitors are not expected to adhere to all of them. “We’re happy as long as guests are relaxed and enjoy the tea ceremony,” she says.

The tea ce ceremony is th the epitome of h hospitality off h hospitality it lit b because it embraces the idea that every fleeting moment is precious because it might never happen again,” says Tomomi Matsumoto Law, co-founder and manager of Kimono Teahouse in Osaka. This is, perhaps, why a more formal version of the chado ceremony can last as long as four hours. The whole ceremony itself is carefully considered. A traditional service is usually in a specially designated room, lined with tatami mats and sparsely decorated with, for example, a piece of calligraphy and a minimalistic plant or floral arrangement. The
te master and guests are tea expected to move slowly and gracefully. Such strict decorum might seem stressful and intimidating. For example, folding the fukusa, a silk handkerchief used by the tea master to wipe (and symbolically purify) the tea scoop and tea caddy, requires about eight steps that must be followed with some degree of precision. And it’s not just the tea master who needs to remember the rules. Guests, upon receiving the chawan (tea bowl), need to turn the chawan clockwise three times before they drink, and after finishing, they have to turn the bowl

anti-clockwise three times before returning it to the host. However, such exacting steps of chado have been known to bring about a sense of relaxation and clarity for tea masters and guests.
Personalising chado For anyone who’s new to chado, there are teahouses that help to make this ritual more accessible. At Kimono Teahouse, Law teaches guests how to wear kimonos and how to make their own matcha. Meanwhile Ayako Fukui, owner of Tea Ceremony Waraku in Osaka, hosts tea ceremonies at her family house in a traditional tea room. Her mother, a Japanese dance master, performs a traditional dance for guests after the ceremony. “Many of our customers say going for a Japanese tea ceremony is such a personal and informative way to experience our culture,” she says.

Why did you join IJL? I lead a stressful life, with a job that requires tons of my time and energy – and this has a corresponding impact on my personal life. After being divorced for more than eight years, I tried the usual ways to meet a potential partner – through recommendations from family, friends and even business acquaintances. While all had good intentions, I didn’t want to feel obligated or compelled to date someone who wasn’t meeting my criteria. I also spoke to friends

That’s why the concept of IJL appealed to me. It was the professional approach and ability to deliver high-quality results with no hassle. Their matchmakers delved deep into my requirements and worked to send me out
Re-entering the dating scene can be daunting – but James Leonard took matters into his own hands. He worked with the experts at It’s Just Lunch (IJL) in Singapore to help him save time and find his soul mate
with women who were my intellectual equal.
What was your impression of the process? It was interesting – instead of ticking the usual boxes and answering some multiplechoice questions, the interview conducted in their office was very personal and comfortable. I realised they were trying to get past the walls we all have, especially after a failed relationship. My interviewer was sophisticated in her line of questioning and I was made to really prioritise what was important to me. Our conversations went beyond the superficial and I had to really reflect about ‘what made me dateable?’
How did IJL help you find your partner? Suri and I just clicked.
Singapore: (+65) 6536 0100 www.itsjustlunchsingapore.com
We’re now celebrating six years of being together and every day we’re going strong! I felt the instant spark and chemistry with Suri because she was genuine, grounded and unpretentious. Just like me, she’s been married before, but what was most important was the fact that IJL made me realise common values and aspirations can really draw two individuals together.
Why would you recommend IJL? Based on my instant success, I wholeheartedly recommend IJL, with one caution. Be sure you’re serious about finding the right person, because they may find that person faster than you think!

COVER STORY I 2017 TRAVEL
ith the new year fast approaching, we start to dream about where to travel in the year ahead. Perhaps you’re thinking of a beach escape, or a shopping holiday? Maybe you want to get off the beaten track and have a real adventure. If you can’t decide, let the jet-set and the tastemakers inspire you: here they reveal where they’ll be going in 2017.
W
JOSIAH CHUA, 27, freelance stylist and designer Where are you planning to visit in 2017? Bali for its interesting cafés and wide assortment of food choices. I’m also the adventurous type and have been wanting to try the beach activities there.
What’s the coolest destination you travelled to in 2016? It happened to be the hanami (cherry blossom) season when I was in Osaka for work so the entire city was picture perfect. I am also a huge Harry Potter fan and, needless to say, I enjoyed myself at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studio Osaka.
What are some hip buys you got during your travels this year? An exquisite kimono from a vintage thrift store in Osaka. It is handembroidered with gold threads and the price was affordable.
If you had all the time and money in the world, what kind of a dream vacation would you have? I love theme parks and since you can’t possibly finish all the rides and explore the entire place in a single day, unlimited visits to any city with the coolest and wackiest theme parks would make the perfect vacation.

What’s the coolest place you travelled to in 2016? My job takes me to places and I have visited the Los Angeles set of E! News, hiked up to the Hollywood sign and hung out at Venice Beach. I also visited Seoul during summer and came back with more than a hundred face masks and funky beauty products.

Any hip buys from your travels this year? I’m obsessed with plants but since you can’t exactly bring a plant back from another country without having to go through a lot of paperwork, I make up for it by sourcing for unique glass bottles.

hile Bali is synonymous with images of sundrenched beaches and coastal resorts, the ‘Island of the Gods’ has a whole other – largely undiscovered – side. Anyone who’s eager to get off the beaten path and experience a more authentic Bali can check into one of the island’s farm stays. From camping to luxury villa stays, these retreats cater to a range of interests.
A cultural immersion Imagine staying in the midst of a volcano, albeit a dormant one. This is the kind of experience you’ll get if you check into the Sarinbuana Eco Lodge, which is set on the slopes of Mt Batukaru in central Bali. Besides giving you bragging rights, your stay will let you venture out on trekking expeditions. As this is one of the most fertile parts of the island, the lodge is blessed with many natural attractions including lush rainforests and a tropical food forest of coffee, cacao and cloves. “We offer numerous guided walks and treks through the tropical rainforest, farmlands, bamboo groves, rice paddies and local villages or to the nearby Batukaru Temple,” says Sarinbuana’s co-founder Linda vant Hoff. You can also get a taste of Balinese culture by joining one of the retreat’s 11 workshops with activities such as
The property is situated amid mountain-fed streams and rice paddies woodcarving, cooking and calligraphy, as well as massage lessons. Nature lovers will be pleased to know Sarinbuana also offers tours of its one-hectare property where they can learn about the culinary and medicinal properties of more than 100 plants. The retreat’s kitchen makes the most of its location by preparing dishes – including vegetarian, raw and gluten-free options – with produce grown on the property.
Swim in pure spring water At Bali Eco Stay, you can drink straight from the tap in your bungalow. Why? Pure volcanic spring water is channelled
from the nearby waterfall to your bathroom and also to the retreat’s natural rock swimming pool. If you are thinking that this is a truly VIP experience, you’re right. After all, Bali Eco Stay houses just eight Balinese-style bungalows – each with its own distinct design. The property is also situated on the southern slopes of Mt Batukaru, amid mountain-fed streams and rice paddies. “When not putting their feet up, guests are welcome to enjoy one of the retreat’s numerous activities including a complimentary tour of our fish ponds, rice paddies, permaculture gardens and hydro generator,” says the

Go on, chase some waterfalls retreat’s co-founder John Blundstone. “Agro-based workshops include coconut oil making, rice planting, basket weaving, Balinese offering making, bamboo craft and cooking local dishes with our own produce.” Visitors keen on more high-impact activities can opt for an eight-hour hike and an overnight trip to the summit of Mt Batukaru.

Munduk Moding Plantation was set up to help preserve the verdant environment of North Bali while providing a base from which guests can experience this scenic part of the island. Located in the quaint village of Gobleg, which is 1,100m above sea level, overlooking the ocean and the coast of Java, Munduk Moding is also one of the only resorts on the island set on a working coffee plantation. “The property produces its own specialty coffee, and our guests can learn all about coffee growing, processing and roasting. We can also tailor our tours if guests are interested in a particular aspect of coffee production,” says Irene Roozen, the plantation’s co-founder. The 18-hectare property houses 50 rooms and villas, and two restaurants. Anyone who wants to really embrace their surroundings can opt for the retreat’s camping package, which includes a tent, a pillow and breakfast. “Some of our more popular activities include jamu (traditional Balinese health tonic) making, the making of the daily Balinese offering known as canang sari, as well as demonstrations on coconut oil processing and palm sugar making,” says Luh Putu Sri Kasih, Bagus Agro Pelaga’s product manager. “We also offer tours of our organic garden where guests learn about the farming process from seeding to harvest.”

SAFETY, SECURITY & COMFORT Carry-on baggage Liquids, aerosols or gels (LAGs) must be in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. Containers must be placed in a transparent resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity not exceeding one litre.
Safety first Please ask the cabin crew for an infant seatbelt if your child is under two years old. Return the infant seatbelt to our cabin crew upon disembarkation. Sleeping on the aircraft floor is not permitted. Please read the safety instruction card in your seat pocket, noting emergency exits and location of life jackets. Please watch the safety
demonstration prior to take-off. In an emergency, the crew will give specific instructions. They may speak assertively and will require your cooperation.
from the lower legs. During your flight, move your legs and feet three or four minutes per hour, and move about.
Cabin pressure Smoking Government regulations prohibit smoking on all flights. There are smoke detectors in all toilets and penalties for regulation breaches.
The importance of blood circulation and muscle relaxation during flights Compression stockings can assist in preventing swelling of the ankles and feet, and they may improve the blood return to the body
To “clear” your ears, try swallowing and/or yawning. When you are flying with an infant, give them a dummy or feed them during the aircraft’s descent. Sucking and swallowing will help the infant equalise the pressure in their ears.
Cabin humidity / dehydration Low humidity in the aircraft cabin can cause drying of the nose, throat and eyes, and can irritate wearers of contact lenses.
Do: • Drink water frequently. • Drink coffee, tea and alcohol only in moderation. • Remove contact lenses if your eyes are irritated. • Use a moisturiser to refresh skin.
Jetstar security policy Jetstar has a strict policy on denying boarding to any passengers who are inappropriate in flight or on ground in comments or behaviour. Jetstar does not accept any inappropriate comments as “jokes”. All matters are referred to relevant authorities for prosecution. Jetstar will seek to recover all costs incurred as a result of inflight incidents from those involved.
More legroom to be yourself. Because you can. Enjoy extra legroom* on our first and emergency row seats for a more comfortable flight! Rows 1, 12 and 13 at SGD32 or equivalent per seat.
*Please approach our cabin crew should you wish to upgrade your seat. Jetstar Asia Airways Pte Ltd BRN:200403570D.

Singapore GAYNOR REID Vice president of communications, Asia Pacific, Accor Hotels; accorhotels.com The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest to is… Club Street. On the weekends the street is closed off to traffic, and restaurants set up their tables and chairs outside so there’s a lively buzz. It’s great for people watching.
SINGAPORE
If you’re only there for a day one must-do is to… take a walk around Gardens by the Bay then wander over to Marina Bay Sands and head up to the rooftop for cocktails at Cé La Vi. Finally, go to Artichoke on Middle Road for dinner. It’s behind a tiny
church, with a charming courtyard and excellent Middle-Eastern-meetsAsian cuisine. A place in the city visitors might not be aware of that I love going to is… MacRitchie Reservoir. There’s a treetop walkway in the forest canopy, where you can spot wildlife ranging from cheeky monkeys to giant lizards and beautiful birds. The most scenic spot in the city is… Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa. It’s perched atop a cliff overlooking sea – you feel like you’re on a tropical
island instead of just 15 minutes from the city. My favourite street in the city is… Keong Saik Road, a former red light district. It offers some of the city’s best bars and restaurants, including my favourite, The Library, a hidden speakeasy (you’ll need a password to get in). The best place for local eats is… Tiong Bahru – it’s a hip neighbourhood and a blend of East and West. You can get Hainanese chicken rice or char siew at the market and tasty Nyonya cuisine at House of Peranakan Petit.
79
Bangkok ALANA MORGAN Director at Morgan Media and blogger at Paper Planes; morganmedia.buzz; paperplanesblog.com The best local hangout to take a guest to is… one of the Rot Fai markets. It’s usually easiest to get to the Ratchada location as it’s just near the Thailand Cultural Centre MRT station. You’ll find a ton
THAILAND
of food stalls along with bars, live music and shopping. A place in the city visitors might not be aware of that I love going to is… Baan Silapin, the ‘Artist’s House’ in the Phasi Charoen District. It’s a restored, traditional wooden house by a canal that shows what old Bangkok was like. There
are free puppet shows and other traditional arts and performances here, too. If you’re only there for a day, one must-do is to… schedule a walking or tuk tuk tour to see some of the sights and taste some street eats. The tours from Expique are excellent and pack a ton into one experience. The best place for a drink or meal with a view is... anything along the Chao Phraya River, or one of the city’s rooftop bars. Red Sky in Centara Grand at CentralWorld is impressive and I also love Scarlett Wine Bar at the
Pullman Bangkok Hotel G. It’s more intimate than many other rooftop bars and oozes style. The most scenic spot in the city is… the Rattanakosin district surrounding the Grand Palace.
Inflight I DESTINATIONS

Hong Kong ANGELA TUFVESSON Freelance writer and editor; angelatufvesson.com The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest to is… the Lobby Lounge at the InterContinental in Kowloon to soak up spectacular views of Victoria Harbour. The afternoon tea is almost as good as the view.
CHINA
If you’re only there for a day, one must-do is to… eat dim sum. It’s the quintessential Hong Kong dining experience. I can’t go past siu mai (opentopped dumplings), lo baak gou (turnip cakes) and everyone’s favourite cha siu bao (pork buns). A place in the city that visitors might not be aware of that I love going to is… stunning Ham Tin beach, to escape
the masses and enjoy nature. Think white sand, clear water and, best of all in one of the world’s most densely populated cities, space. Bliss! From Sai Kung, it’s a 30-minute boat ride. The most scenic spot in the city is… The Peak, hands down. The view of the city
from the highest peak on Hong Kong Island is mind blowing. Take the tram or bus or, if you’re feeling energetic, hike up there. You’ll never forget it. The best place for a selfie or groufie is… the Big Buddha on Lantau Island, which stands at 34m tall. My favourite street in the city is… Shau Kei Wan Main Street East. It may not be as glamorous as some of Hong Kong’s more well-known culinary hot spots – but it makes up for this in delicious and authentic cheap eats.

Kuala Lumpur NOOR Withlocals host; withlocals.com
The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest to is… the Perdana Botanical Garden at Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park. It’s also close to other attractions like museums, memorials, the orchid, butterfly and bird parks,
the National Monument and the National Mosque. The best freebie a visitor can get in my city is... the Dataran Merdeka Heritage Guided Tour, a free tour by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. This trail covers 11 heritage spots, with free entrance to the KL City Gallery and a ticket discount for MUD, a homegrown 60-minute musical about the history of the city.

The most scenic spot in the city is… the Atmosphere 360 Revolving Restaurant at KL Tower to enjoy lunch or dinner with a fantastic view of Kuala Lumpur. The best place for a selfie or groufie is... Merdeka Square, which is surrounded by colonialera buildings, and the Petronas Twin Towers which has been the main landmark of the city. The best place for local eats is... Jalan Alor if you prefer non-halal Chinese food or Kampung Baru if you prefer halal Malay food.
My favourite street in the city is… Jalan Hang Kasturi, where Central Market is located. This is where we can watch local artists showcase their artworks. A good souvenir to buy is… local batik (dyed cloth) with fancy motifs from Kraftangan Malaysia at Jalan Conlay.

The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest to is… Cottesloe Beach. It’s located in Perth’s western suburbs and is one of the world’s most family friendly beaches for surfing, swimming and snorkelling.
AUS T R A L I A A place in the city that visitors might not be aware of that I love going to is... Bayview Park in Mosman Park. Shaded by gum trees and with elevated views of Perth, it’s a great spot for a picnic. If you’re only there for a day, one must-do is to… take a ferry to Rottnest Island
to see quokkas, which are only found in Western Australia. You’ll also be spoiled for choice with more than 60 beaches. The best freebie a visitor can get in Perth is… a run along the Swan River for postcard-perfect photos, with black swans on the shore of the river and the city skyline in the background. My favourite street is… Wolf Lane – it’s regarded as one of the best laneways in Australia. After a successful facelift, it fuses together bars, cafés and restaurants with
street art and is now a chic place for dining and shopping. The best place to go shopping is… Subiaco. Some the best boutique fashion shops and art galleries can be found on its leafy streets. A good souvenir to buy is… pearls from the Willie Creek Pearl Farm. The boutique store on Hay Street, Subiaco, has a great collection.

The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest to is… the Ebisubashi (a bridge) area in the Namba district after dusk, to soak in the eclectic atmosphere of the backstreets of Japan. Walk down the covered Shopping Street towards
J A PA N
Namba Station Plaza but make sure to turn off the main promenade to find small sushi shops or Japanese taverns. A place in the city visitors might not be aware of that I love going to is… the second floor of the Misono Building – it hides plenty of small bars and eating establishments. The best way to get around the city is… by taxi. Taxis are everywhere and often have an English point card for translating. However, in some areas there is nothing better than a walking route.
The best freebie a visitor can get in my city is… the Asahi Breweries Tour. Admission is free and you even get free beer tasting. You can book English guides, too. The best place for a drink or meal with a view is… Chotsugai on the 28th floor of the Hankyu Grand
building. At tables for two, both chairs face the most amazing view of Osaka. If you’re only there for a day, one must-do is to… visit Osaka Castle and Museum which houses original Samurai armour and a Golden Tea Room. And find somewhere to taste the two famous dishes tako-yaki (octopus balls) and okonomi-yaki (savoury pancake).

WHEN A FOODIE FLIES

I’M HARDLY PUNCTUAL. But when I have a plane to catch, I’m at the airport way ahead of schedule. I’m a foodie and I travel to eat. But my gastronomic journey doesn’t begin at my destination; it starts at the airport where I must factor in enough time before boarding to grab a bite. There’s something holiday-ish about tucking into a burger at 9am in the airport, and knowing that somewhere else in reality your friends and colleagues are stuck at their office desks. And while food snobs pooh-pooh airplane food, the sound of the trolley making its way down the aisle is music to my airpressure-clogged ears. I’ll stall my loo visits when meal service is about to begin. Where else can you make a split-second decision about going for “fish or chicken” and then gingerly peel off the steamy foil to see what lies beneath? It’s a lot like Christmas Day, really. The minute I check into my hotel room, I search for the room service menu. Reading it gives me a rush and lets me do a mental checklist of what’s available after midnight (in case I get
I must factor in enough time before boarding to grab a bite peckish) and what’s in the American breakfast set (Erm, just one miserable fried egg and oatmeal porridge? Nah). Outside of my room, I have no qualms joining snaking queues if doing so gets me dining – okay, bragging – rights. My record time? Two hours – in the wintry cold – before the Tim Ho Wan dim sum
eatery in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po opened. If I’m at a theme park, food carts, not the rides, beckon me. I mean, who cares about plunging down manmade waterfalls or pointing laser guns at 3D monsters when I can have pandabear-shaped buns or, in the case of Tokyo’s Disneyland, at least five flavours of popcorn (confession: I had every one of them in one visit)? Language differences also won’t deter me from getting my food.
In Bangkok, I made a buzzing noise and flapped my hands. My waitress’s face lit up and she passed me a jar of honey. In a small bar outside Tokyo, my husband and I wanted something other than chicken yakitori. So he drew a skewered squid on a paper napkin, showed it to the cook and we got our nicely charred, sea-salt-topped grilled squid. Now, who once said food is the universal language? I’ll buy that T-shirt any day.
