At Sketch Town, doodle something on paper and watch it come to life on screen – if you touch a car illustration, for example, it will accelerate or change its course. Our commitment to our customers
I
n the last two months, Jetstar Asia had received numerous encouraging and positive affirmations from customers and the industry for our commitment to customer service and airline punctuality. The Institute of Service Excellence in Singapore, as part of the Singapore Management University, rated Jetstar Asia top in customer satisfaction amongst all Singapore carriers in 2017, while independent digital flight data analysts OAG listed Jetstar Asia as the only airline in Asia Pacific to receive a five-star rating for punctuality, ahead of other airlines in Singapore. The annual study measures on-time performance based on arrivals within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. As the study reports, Jetstar Asia has 86.4 per cent of flights arriving on time. Despite several factors like airport congestion and weather that would cause inadvertent delays for all airlines, at Jetstar, we have invested in Technology, Processes and our People to make
travel more reliable and seamless for our customers. We understand that getting you to your destination on time is important all-year round and with school holidays around the corner, we will endeavour to do so, bearing in mind your safety as our top priority. This November, we will start operating services to three new destinations: Hat Yai in Thailand, Okinawa in Japan and Clark in the Philippines. We are also delighted to hear from you that our onboard meals are getting tastier, and come December, do look out for new flavours and tastes on our menus as well as upcoming Christmas promotions. Thank you for your continued support, we wish all of you a festive holiday season. Have a safe and enjoyable flight!

I travel once, sometimes twice every month and I am a fast packer. I can complete my packing one hour before I leave for the airport. I find transparent Ziploc plastic bags really useful
as I can look into them without having to fumble and search for what I need in my baggage. When I travel, I’m never without my black notebook. I love to illustrate a recipe and scribble the name of the ingredients next to it. My inspiration doesn’t only come from markets; it can come from an art exhibition. I also travel with a bottle of furikake (dried
Japanese seasoning) for when I miss the taste of Japanese food overseas, although I always try to have local food wherever I am. Furikake also makes a good souvenir because each prefecture has a different take on it. I love buying T-shirts when I travel. Recently I designed some tees and caps with my friend, who’s also a chef, as we like the idea of street fashion in the kitchen.

We asked her about her work and personal plans for the near

several years in Hong Kong. But it wasn’t until recently that I attempted acting. I’d been offered acting roles in Hong Kong many years earlier, but I know how invasive the Hong Kong paparazzi can be and I cherish my private life, so I turned down those opportunities. When I’m in front of a TV camera or have to walk the red carpet, I am, in a way, still modelling, because I have to pose, show my best angles and express a certain style. I also still get approached for fashion shows and photo shoots, so I haven’t completely stopped modelling.

You’re getting married in 2018. Have you thought about the wedding yet? It’ll be a small, cosy and simple affair, with just family and close friends – 200 guests, maximum. You met your fiancé, a Singaporean banker, through a dating app. Do you have any tips for our readers using a dating website or app? Just be honest from the beginning about who you are. Meeting people online can be tricky because you never know if their photos are edited. And anyone can lie about what they do and what they’re like. But I’ve found that if you’re honest from the get-go, you’ll have a better chance of meeting decent people. What do you owe your longevity in this business to? I’m lucky to have had a lot of good advice along

How are you spending Christmas this year? It’ll be the first time that my fiancé and I will be sharing the same house, so we’ll most likely host a small gathering for family and friends. It’s going to be all about the food. Which celebrity gives the best gifts? Chen Hanwei, my 118 co-star. He makes his gifts from scratch and even wraps them himself. Plus, he’s good at surprises.
What’s on your Christmas wish list? I’m a practical person so I wouldn’t mind a good rice cooker or slow juicer. What are some of your plans for 2018? Well, I’ll be married at the start of the year so I’m looking forward to being a wife. I want to channel all my life experiences into that role. I also hope to start a family as soon as possible. I don’t intend to stop acting, though. I want to be a working mum so you’ll still be seeing me around.

Does Japan’s Okinawa island hold the key to longevity? words deborah dickson-smith and paul robinson
34
O
ne of Japan’s most fascinating prefectures has an international culture, a year-round subtropical climate and locals who are said to live longer than anyone else in the world. Okinawans credit their longevity to an active and healthy lifestyle (the warm climate making it possible to enjoy the great outdoors 24/7), a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables, an adventurous spirit and an all-round positive attitude. An island in the Ryukyu archipelago, Okinawa was part of
the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, and had a mutually beneficial relationship with imperial China from the 13th century until the island was invaded by samurai and made a protectorate of the Shogunate in 1609. The considerable Chinese influence here can still be seen in the local architecture. Today, Okinawa is promoted as Japan’s ‘tropical side’. Often compared to Hawaii, it’s a sprawling archipelago of idyllic tropical islands, surrounded by white sandy beaches and pretty coral reefs. On the main island, Okinawa’s capital of Naha is a

vibrant, modern city, which you could also compare to Honolulu. The city’s main drag, Kokusaidori (International Street) is a lively place after dark, with an abundance of restaurants, bars and nightclubs, many catering to US defence personnel on the island (Okinawa hosts a major US military base). Here are six ways to sample Okinawan culture that might help you live to a ripe old age.
1. Tempt your taste buds with Okinawan cuisine
36
According to Okinawans, one of the secrets to a long life is a well-balanced diet – rice, vegetables, sea vegetables, seafood, tofu and the “proper amount of meat”. So, if you’re hoping to learn how to live to 100, sampling Okinawan food is scientifically important. Despite the understandable influence of American food, Okinawa has a fantastic range of dining options, serving everything from sushi to shabu shabu (a hotpot dish) and teppanyaki. On Kokusaidori, there are several izakaya-style eateries where you can enjoy live entertainment from local musicians while you eat. Okinawan beef rivals wagyu in texture and flavour, and is so tender it melts in your mouth. One of the best places to taste some is at the awardwinning Motobu Farm restaurant, but be sure to book as it’s always busy. The Okinawans have always been self-sufficient, indeed, the residents of Okinawa’s so-called Longevity Village, Ogimi, credit growing their own food as a contributing factor to their longevity. So, it’s no surprise to find a chain of buffet-style restaurants serving every imaginable type of Japanese food, all made from local organic produce. At Daikon no Hana, you can choose from udon, soba or ramen noodles, sushi and sashimi, katsu chicken and pork, Japanese curry and a wide selection of salads.

2. Explore the coral gardens of the Kerama Islands
Clockwise from left: Soba noodles at Makabe China restaurant, Itoman; the coral surrounding the Kerama Islands; bitter gourd, the key ingredient of the local dish champuru
Swimming is one of the best ways to stay fit and agile in a tropical climate, so it’s no surprise the Okinawans are strong swimmers. In fact, Okinawans invented wooden swimming goggles more than 130 years ago to protect their eyes while spear-fishing. These miikagan were first made by local diver Yasutaro Gusukuma in 1884 from the monpanoki (octopus bush). Kerama Shoto National Park is an island-dotted marine park west of Okinawa, a short ferry ride from Naha. Being a marine-protected area, the biodiversity in the coral gardens that surround these islands is incredible. The coral is in pristine condition with soft and hard corals of all shapes and sizes. Huge schools of reef fish surround each coral bommie in clouds of yellow, orange, purple and blue while sea turtles glide by through the crystal-clear water.
3. Try your hand at a craft Okinawa is famous for its pottery, glassware and woven textiles, and there are several places in Naha where

you can try your hand at these crafts. The Tsuboya pottery district is not far from the bustling centre of Naha, but coming here is a bit like stepping back in time as the cobbled streets are lined with studios and shops selling all kinds of ceramic wares. At Ikutouen studio, you can watch the artisans at work and take a pottery class. The studio will glaze and fire your creation and post it home to you. If textiles are more your thing, try a coral-printing class at Shuri Ryusen studio. Create intricate patterns on a T-shirt, tote bag or length of cloth by stretching the fabric over a piece of coral and dabbing it with colourful inks.
4. Dive to discover an underwater mystery The Yonaguni Monument is a large, seemingly man-made structure sitting in about 10m of water. But is it an ancient monument swallowed by the sea or a natural rock formation? Local dive master Kihachiro Aratake is convinced it’s man-made. He discovered the now famous Yonaguni Monument in 1986, and the site is the subject of several books and documentary films. When Aratake first saw it, he thought he’d found an ‘underwater Machu Picchu’. Some think it might be the Japanese Atlantis,
others that it is just Mother Nature showing her creative side. If Aratake is anything to go by, scuba diving is good for longevity as well. Now well into his 70s, he’s still diving regularly and has recently started teaching himself how to dive with rebreather equipment to stay underwater longer. Yonaguni is in the Yaeyama Islands, about a 90-minute flight from Okinawa. The monument is a 40-minute boat ride from the port of Kubura.
5. Sample the local liquor Pickling oneself with shochu must surely (we hope!) contribute to longevity, especially with distilled liquor that’s 60-80 proof (30-40% alcohol). Okinawan awamori, although known as ‘the island sake’, is different from the sake made in other parts of Japan. It is distilled rather than brewed, using a different type of rice. The Okinawans use long-grain indica rice from Thailand. The technique of distilling reached Okinawa in the 15th century from Thailand. Being sugar-free, the liquor has only around 60% of the calories found in sake. And being distilled, it has fewer impurities, which
Culture hits WWII Japanese Navy Headquarters Okinawans certainly have a deep understanding that life is precious. The Battle of Okinawa in 1945 resulted in the deaths of about a third of the population of the island at the time. According to some accounts, most Okinawan males over the age of 15 perished in the fighting. 236 Aza Tomigusuku, Tomigusuku City; kaigungou.ocvb.or.jp Learn about the Ryukyu kings at Shurijo Castle The original castles of the Ryukyu kingdom were all destroyed, largely by Allied bombing during the Battle of Okinawa. Coffee of Indonesia Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most prolific producer of coffee beans, after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia. It’s known especially for the
Robusta variety of coffee bean as well as highquality Arabica, which both grow abundantly in the verdant tropical climate in the country’s mountainous regions. The crop is grown in several regions, including on the islands of Java and Sulawesi, though the island of Sumatra is most famous for quality coffee beans. The coffee-growing regions in northern Sumatra have fertile volcanic soil and swathes of tropical jungle, combining to create the perfect conditions for growing coffee. Each growing region in Indonesia produces coffee with its own flavour notes, influenced by the soil, climate and

Intricate floral buttercream cakes (from S$85) are her forte, with classic flavours such as chocolate salted caramel and vanilla, and contemporary flavours such as matcha and Earl Grey. Her buttercream-frosted watercolour and ombre designs (both from S$75) are also highly sought-after.
Sculptural masterpieces: Celebrate with Cake What started as a spot of fun in baking birthday cakes for friends and relatives morphed into a nearly 365-days-a-year baking business for Veronica Yang, whose Facebook followers number more than

30,000. She’s a maven with fondant icing, turning out everything from an adorable safari-themed cake complete with 3D fondant animals, to a battle-worthy sculpture of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. She works with traditional butter cake flavours, but offers a gamut of buttercream fillings, from chocolate ganache to passionfruit. Prices start from S$180 for a simple butter cake with 2D design, to upwards of S$300 for 3D cakes. Her hand-crafted rotating carousel cakes (from S$650) are a big hit at birthday parties, and dessert tables can be arranged too.
Scrumptious dessert bites: The Spatula & the Pen Every single cake post on Ng Litying’s Instagram is different and has a story. Instead of giving customers a list of options to mix and match, she takes into account the recipient’s likes, dislikes and personality to conjure up a truly personalised piece. Her molten-centred cookies (from S$30 per batch) and brownies (from S$50 for a tray of 12) tend to sell lightning fast whenever she announces flash sales via Instagram. Some of her most unusual dessert bites include Earl Grey and lavender brownies, and matcha cookies with an oozy Nutella stuffing.
Perfect pavlovas: Meraki by Dyy & Dee Wahidah Samat started selling pavlovas to fund her school trip to London, but word spread, orders kept pouring in, and she’s been baking as a side gig with her fiancé, Hadi Suhaimi, since. They found their niche in pavlovas and meringues (both from S$16 per box), doing inventive flavours such as speculoos (a spiced biscuit), raspberry with dark chocolate, and ondeh ondeh (a pandan and palm sugar hybrid). Bake sales are usually announced

on Instagram. As a Muslim-owned business, Meraki is particularly in demand at Malay weddings for their ‘cakelova’ dessert table which comprises a cake and a tower of cupcake-size meringues.
Naked nibbles: Sophiensyy Having a sweet tooth kickstarted her baking habit, and Sophie Ng has been addicted ever since. Despite juggling a full-time writing job, the prolific baker offers quite the range: buttercream-frosted cakes (from S$50), tiered naked cakes (those not fully covered with icing, from S$120), loaf cakes, tarts and cupcakes. She counts her mango sticky rice tart and black sesame matcha loaf cake among her bestsellers, and also offers dessert tables for events.
Floral fun: Spiffycakes Regina Eng’s baking adventures had a prosaic start – she simply wanted to get more mileage out of her new oven. She has since become a buttercream expert and is equally adept at simple flourishes and 3D flowers as she is at creating more extravagant designs such as buttercream illustrations of cartoon and animal characters. Her custom decorations include sponge cakes, chiffon cakes, rainbow cakes and red velvet cakes (all from S$70); and for Christmas, she does a logcake (from S$80) fashioned like a tree stump, except rather more delicious with flavours such as Valrhona chocolate, matcha and strawberry.

Fresh Perth-spective Frances Andrijich, who shot the preceding images of Perth, says the Western Australian capital has changed from a sleepy town to a cultural crossroads beach, browsing the Fremantle markets and having breakfast at our local café.
Perth is no longer a sleepy cul-de-sac. For more than four decades, I have observed our city grow to become the cultural crossroads it is today. Once shyly cloistered, Perth now competes with the best of them, confident in its dynamic international vibe. Perth has all the benefits of a big city without the disadvantages normally associated with it. Traffic jams are rare, as are queues to popular events. There is also cultural sustenance available: festivals, concerts and

For visitors to Perth… Visit the Araluen Botanical Park in spring. In summer, Rottnest Island is the place to go, with its unique wildlife and crystal-clear waters. The open-air cinema located on the grounds of the University of Western Australia screens films from all over the world in summer. The Swan Valley with its vineyards and orchards is the place for autumn and in winter, the cosiness of yum cha with family and friends in Northbridge is hard to beat. And in March every year, the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition on Cottesloe Beach displays art from local and overseas sculptors.

PROMOTION
The first step for fashionistas WANT YOUR START IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? HERE ARE THREE REASONS YOU SHOULD GET YOUR DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SUNDERLAND AT MDIS
T
1. A well-rounded education Students learn creative, management and technical skills, and
experience every stage of creating and launching a fashion product. You’ll also learn to create designs, get an understanding of manufacturing processes, hone visual communication skills and study how to promote a product. The programme gives students a holistic perspective of the fashion world, from design philosophies to key designers and movements, and the wide-ranging influence of globalisation and culture.
2. Connections to the industry To foster communication between students and the industry, MDIS invites movers and shakers to the campus for talks which help students understand the challenges of the fashion landscape. There are also regular networking sessions that provide opportunities to establish valuable contacts.
3. A professional portfolio The degree also ensures that students have a
portfolio to make what they’ve learned relatable to employers. For instance, those interested in graphic design could showcase ideas for packaging or posters; those keen on fashion marketing might present photo spreads and plans for promotional activities.
MDIS intakes during 2018 are in April and September. Find out more about the University of Sunderland fashion degree at mdis.edu.sg.

A day out for a good cause The Jetstar team recently took time off to bring some cheer to the residents at the All Saints Home in Singapore, and it was an afternoon of joy for all. The Jetstar team, made up of members from cabin crew, tech crew and corporate office, played games such as Tic-Tac-Toe and Tikam Tikam with the young at heart residents and filled the hall with barrels of laughs. We hope the residents had as much as fun as we did.
NEW DESTINATION
KOH LIPE, THE MALDIVES OF THAILAND With Jetstar’s new flights to Hat Yai commencing this month, the little paradise of Koh Lipe in the Andaman Sea has become easily accessible. Surrounded by pristine clear waters, this gorgeous hideout is a heavenly retreat away from the crowds. Our evening flights in and out of Hat Yai are perfect for the weekend getaway to Koh Lipe, as minivan and speedboat transfers to the island only run in the mornings and early afternoons. What are you waiting for?

Putting safety ďŹ rst Safety is our topmost priority, so all of our cabin and tech crew (yes, pilots too!) are required to undergo rigorous training sessions and assessments every year, to ensure all operating crew members are on top of the evacuation and safety procedures. Here are some highlights from a recurrent training session.
Should water evacuation be required, crew members will don an orange life jacket for easy recognition, and direct passengers to the nearest exits in the loudest possible voice.
Water skills are a basic requirement of all crew members, cabin or tech.
71
The correct way to jump down the slide is to cross or stretch the arms, and jump onto the slide with your body at a 45-degree angle to the slide. This picture demonstrates evacuation with an unconscious passenger.
Pilots must also be able to open aircraft doors, in the event of an emergency.
In rafts, a canopy will be raised to shield occupants from the weather.
Huddling in the water is to ensure the body retains body heat to increase survival time.

SAFETY, SECURITY & COMFORT Carry-on baggage Liquids, aerosols or gels (LAGs) must be in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. Containers must be placed in a transparent resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity not exceeding one litre.
Safety first Please ask the cabin crew for an infant seatbelt if your child is under two years old. Return the infant seatbelt to our cabin crew upon disembarkation. Sleeping on the aircraft floor is not permitted. Please read the safety instruction card in your seat pocket, noting emergency exits and location of life jackets. Please watch the safety
demonstration prior to take-off. In an emergency, the crew will give specific instructions. They may speak assertively and will require your cooperation.
from the lower legs. During your flight, move your legs and feet three or four minutes per hour, and move about.
Cabin pressure Smoking Government regulations prohibit smoking on all flights. There are smoke detectors in all toilets and penalties for regulation breaches.
The importance of blood circulation and muscle relaxation during flights Compression stockings can assist in preventing swelling of the ankles and feet, and they may improve the blood return to the body
To “clear” your ears, try swallowing and/or yawning. When you are flying with an infant, give them a dummy or feed them during the aircraft’s descent. Sucking and swallowing will help the infant equalise the pressure in their ears.
Cabin humidity / dehydration Low humidity in the aircraft cabin can cause drying of the nose, throat and eyes, and can irritate wearers of contact lenses.
Do: • Drink water frequently. • Drink coffee, tea and alcohol only in moderation. • Remove contact lenses if your eyes are irritated. • Use a moisturiser to refresh skin.
Jetstar security policy Jetstar has a strict policy on denying boarding to any passengers who are inappropriate in flight or on ground in comments or behaviour. Jetstar does not accept any inappropriate comments as “jokes”. All matters are referred to relevant authorities for prosecution. Jetstar will seek to recover all costs incurred as a result of inflight incidents from those involved.
More legroom to be yourself. Because you can. Enjoy extra legroom* on our first and emergency row seats for a more comfortable flight! Rows 1, 12 and 13 at SGD32 or equivalent per seat.
*Please approach our cabin crew should you wish to upgrade your seat. Jetstar Asia Airways Pte Ltd BRN:200403570D.

Yangon SULAIMAN ZAINUL ABIDIN Chief operating officer, Yangon Aerodrome Company The best attraction or local hangout to take a guest is… Atlas Rooftop Bar, with an uninterrupted panoramic view of the city and the Shwedagon Pagoda. If you’re only there for a day, what’s one must-do?
M YA N M A R
Definitely Shwedagon Pagoda. The 2,500-yearold golden pagoda is an unofficial symbol of Myanmar so it’s a mustsee for all visitors. A secret place that I love going to in my city is… Vista Bar, also the first rooftop bar that I visited when I moved to Yangon.
I fell in love with the view of Shwedagon Pagoda, and I also fell in love with my Myanmar friend who took me there the first time. The best freebie a visitor can get in my city is… Visit Twante village within Yangon Region to experience potterymaking. The most scenic spot in the city is… Le Planteur, a fine-dining establishment set in an old colonial bungalow, with a garden terrace facing Inya Lake. This one gets my vote for a romantic dinner. The best place to go shopping in my city is… Bogyoke
Aung San Market. You can find local souvenirs, handicrafts, paintings, fabrics, gems... With more than 2,000 shops and plenty of opportunities for a little bargaining, there’s something for everyone. The best place for local eats is… Rangoon Tea House. It serves amazing local eats. Try one of the milk tea creations.

PHOTOS ISTOCK; ALAMY
DO VAN DAN Chairman and CEO of Elegance Hospitality Group; elegancehospitality.com If you are only there for a day, what are the must-dos? Indulge in authentic Hanoi cuisine on a street food tour, stroll around the Old Quarter alleys, delight in the vibrant colours and aromas at local markets, and observe grand
VIETNAM colonial architecture at landmarks such as the Metropole Hotel and the Opera House. The best attractions to take a guest to are… Hanoi’s museums, which provide insight into a country’s history, society and culture. Hanoi has some of Vietnam’s best museums including the Vietnam Women’s Museum and Hoa Lu Prison. For the most scenic spot in the city… It’s hard to beat West Lake (Ho Tay). It’s particularly alluring around sunset when the light on the water is truly magical.
A secret place I love to visit in my city is… The Den Bar at La Siesta Trendy Hotel on Nguyen Quang Bich Street, a sophisticated hidden bar with superb cocktails. The best place to enjoy local food is at… Quan An Ngon in the Old Quarter features an extensive
menu of authentic Vietnamese street food. The best place to take a selfie is… From the observation deck of the Lotte Centre on the 65th storey. What is a good souvenir to buy and where can I buy it? A traditional lacquer bowl and other elegant handicrafts from Vietcraft on Ly Thuong Kiet Street. For more traditional handicrafts and goods, head to Dong Xuan market.

VACATIONS USED TO BE a special time of rest and relaxation for me, but now I’m a frazzled mum of two, planning trips away from home feels more like organising a boot camp than taking a rejuvenating break. Travelling during the less crowded offpeak season is no longer possible with children who attend school. Far-flung (also: exotic) destinations, long-haul flights and weird flight timings are also off-limits. It’s a logistical nightmare just planning the trip. For instance, military-style precision is required when strategising ways to entertain a restless toddler on a four-hour flight, figuring out what to have in the travel medical kit, the number of diapers to bring along… the list of parenting problems goes on and on. When you think you’ve nailed everything, never be smug about it. Something unexpected will come along to derail your carefully thoughtout plans. Like that time during our Taipei vacation when my youngest daughter had an awful bout of constipation. The uncomfortable experience turned my usually chirpy toddler into a cranky holiday horror. I kicked myself for not bringing
A grumpy-looking woman looked ready to clobber us with her handbag along a child-sized enema. Travelling with kids also means we have our fair share of cultural faux pas. For example, during a recent trip in South Korea where good public transport etiquette involves keeping decibels to a minimum, we had trouble getting our excitable and chatty preschooler to quieten down on the crowded train. Worse, my restless
kid, who was sharing a seat with me, also kept invading our neighbour’s personal space. By the end of the three-hour ride from Seoul to Busan, a grumpylooking ajumma (middleaged woman) looked ready to clobber both of us with her handbag. On that trip I also learnt the awful consequence of leaving my preschooler’s favourite toy (a tattered stuffed giraffe) at home
the hard way. Without her faithful sleep companion, my daughter had meltdowns every night for 10 days, leaving us thoroughly exhausted after our family vacation. Still, we survived the trip. Despite the mayhem, every family holiday has been a great bonding experience. In fact, we are planning another overseas trip soon. This time however, I’ll be sure to bring “Giffy” along with us (even if it stinks up everything else in our luggage) and I’ll just accept that a bit of noise is inevitable.
