journey to Rarotonga and Aitutaki in the Cook Islands is the perfect island escape. Rest and relaxation, romance, family fun, activity and adventure. You can have it all in this tropical paradise. Everywhere the scenery is spectacular. From turquoise blue lagoons fringed by coral reefs and stunning white-sand beaches to craggy volcanic peaks and dense jungles, it’s picture perfect and awe-inspiring. There is a wide variety of accommodation with a choice for all budgets; from self-contained family villas to luxurious five star couples-only retreats, backpacker hostels and full-service resorts.
IFC_JANUARY.indd Cook Islands DPS.indd100All Pages
People often ask which side of Rarotonga they should stay on. There are a variety of hotels, resorts and holiday homes all over the island, but most are located between Muri Beach and the western side of Rarotonga. Muri Beach has motus (small islands) just off the beach that can be swum or paddled to. Most resorts provide kayaks and snorkelling gear free of charge too. There is also a wide variety of restaurants all within walking distance. As you head around the island towards the western side, there is accommodation of all types and this is also where you will find the late afternoon sun and amazing sunsets.
Rarotonga Just 32 km in circumference, you can drive around the island in just 40 minutes. Rarotonga has the widest range of scenery, activities, accommodation, restaurants and cafés too. It has been said that Rarotonga is like one big resort – because people get out and about and don’t just stay in their hotel. There are beaches with no-one on them and you can stop and spend as long or as little time as you like there. The multitude of cafés and restaurants around the island just have to be experienced. The food is so good with a huge variety on offer. Many holidaymakers are content just

to enjoy Rarotonga’s relaxed environment with its warm lagoon and lush tropical mountains. There’s nothing better than a day lying on the beach, snorkelling, swimming, snoozing or simply admiring the scenery from your hammock. But while Rarotonga is perfect for relaxing and re-charging, it also has plenty of activities and cultural experiences to entertain you for days. For some soft adventure, take Pa’s Cross Country Trek, which traverses the island’s mountains including the iconic Needle. Take a four-wheel drive adventure tour, hire quad bikes or take a buggy tour, learn to paddleboard or scuba dive, go night diving, kite surfing or big game fishing.
1-3_CONTENTS_JAN.indd 1
A lagoon cruise on a glass-bottomed boat is a must-do. You can snorkel alongside tropical fish before going ashore on a palm-fringed motu for a barbecue lunch and entertainment involving coconuts, sarongs, music and a good old laugh at life in general. Many resorts have their own island night with traditional music and dancing. And there are spectacular shows at the award-winning Highland Paradise Cultural Centre, set in an ancient mountain village at Arorangi, or the stunning theatrical over-water performance at Te Vara Nui in Muri Beach. No matter where you are or what you want to do, the whole island is yours to enjoy.
Aitutaki Often called the honeymoon island, Aitutaki is pure paradise. Only a 40-minute flight north of Rarotonga, it’s spectacularly beautiful, with a triangular-shaped reef surrounding a bright turquoise lagoon containing 15 small motus. The crystal-clear water is home to bright tropical fish and its pristine white-sand beaches are private and secluded. Exploring the lagoon is an absolute must. Book a lagoon cruise to visit the outer motus and have lunch on One Foot Island, which some consider to be the most beautiful beach in the whole of the South Pacific.

I saw firsthand the effort of our people to make this happen, and was really proud
I
n just a few months as Jetstar Group CEO, I have been touched by the passion of our team members to go above and beyond for our customers. Last month, we experienced a significant disruption to flights in and out of Bali when Mount Agung erupted. Across Australia and Asia, our teams worked around the clock to minimise the impact to people’s travel plans as much as possible. Relief flights were scheduled during every window of opportunity, and within a few days Jetstar and Qantas were able to bring 8000 passengers out of Bali and into Australia and Singapore. I saw firsthand the effort of our people to make this happen,
and was really proud when so many customers contacted us to express their personal thanks to our crew. To celebrate this holiday season, each and every Jetstar team member across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan has a Jetstar gift voucher to give to somebody of their choice throughout December and January. It’s an annual program called ‘Gift of Giving’ and each year there are incredible stories to be told. One story from last year was of an 88-year-old visionimpaired woman who was flying for the first time to visit some loved ones. She had planned on taking the bus home, but with the help of our crew’s Gift of Giving vouchers, she was able to fly home. I hope you enjoy your flight with us today and I encourage you to get to know your crew on board.

Which is your favourite tennis tournament? The Brisbane International is my home tournament so it is always special as my friends and family are there to cheer me on – even my two-year-old niece Lucy comes to watch. And of course the AO is one of my favourites as it’s the first Grand Slam of the year.
What’s your favourite summer activity when you’re not playing sport? Something low-key … a chilled barbecue at home with my friends, my dogs and sport on TV!
The Australian Open is in Melbourne from 15-28 January. ausopen.com
What’s it like being back on the tennis court? It’s exciting. I exceeded my goals in 2017 and had a lot of fun being back on tour, largely due to my fantastic coach Craig Tyzzer and doubles partner Casey Dellacqua who always keep me entertained on the road. I can’t wait for the 2018 season to begin.

Welcome
Emerging onto the pro tennis circuit in 2011 aged just 15, Ipswich native Ash Barty won fans on- and off-court with her raw talent and down-to-earth personality. In 2014, the rising star took a hiatus from tennis to play pro cricket for the women’s Big Bash League. Many fans thought she’d never return to tennis, when the now 21-yearold made a surprise comeback last year – rising from outside the top 300 to number 17 in the Women’s Tennis Association ranking, the highest ranked Australian at the time of writing. We talk to the Newcombe Medallist ahead of her highly anticipated return to the Australian Open (AO).
I first played in 2012 and was only 15 years old. I was definitely a mixture of nerves and excitement – it was my first Grand Slam match. Unfortunately I lost Round 1, but I will never forget the experience.

assie might not be the first place you’d expect a legendary rocker to put down roots. But it’s where you’ll find Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie – and it suits him just fine. As curator of Mona Foma (Mofo), Brian has made the January festival one of Australia’s most anticipated. As of 2019, Mofo will relocate to Hobart’s northern neighbour, Launceston, while Mofo 2018 will include a mini-Mofo there. “We have specifically tailored this first mini-Mofo to bring attendees in contact with a prime selection of spaces,” Brian says. “We hope to put a spotlight on the existing and latent talent and venues in such a way that it shows the potential of Launceston to Tasmanians and visitors alike.” His top picks include Gotye in Albert Hall, Holy Body Tattoo’s Monumental in the Princess Theatre and the activation of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. Brian’s first encounters with “Lonnie”, brought to mind his Midwest US upbringing. “That is: family neighbourhoods, industrial wasteland, a lively pub scene, grungy music venues – all the things that make blue-collar towns so much fun. It’s a no-nonsense place,” Brian says. “Since moving to Tasmania we make frequent trips up there to hang out.” Here, he shares his favourite haunts. Mofo 2018, 12-22 January. mofo.net.au

Cataract Gorge is a source of incredible energy and beauty, and you can walk to it. My wife Varuni and I visited on a collecting trip of insects associated with waterfalls we did for the American Museum of Natural History.

These usually take place at Saint John Craft Beer Bar, which has an amazing selection of local and international brews. Or if we’re in an Apple Isle-mood we go to Red Brick Road Ciderhouse, where you can find lovely ciders on tap. And for a dose of live music I like The Royal Oak hotel – it rocks.
ST JOHN’S CATHEDRAL 157 St John Street stjohnsac.net.au All great towns are walking towns. When I’m on my perambulations I often check out St John’s Cathedral. It’s a good place to sit and ponder, while gazing upon the massive musical pipes of Tasmania’s biggest organ.
CITY PARK 45-55 Tamar Street Midday is a good time to wander around City Park and have a picnic lunch. One of my favourite, albeit futile, endeavours is to serenade the Japanese macaques in the monkey enclosure with my shakuhachi Japanese flute. They do not seem to have an opinion pro or con.

anguage has never been my strong point. Besides a few words of German and French I picked up in year eight language classes, I’m a bit of a dunce when it comes to linguistics. During my time living in London I vividly remember being at dinner parties with Europeans who could speak five or six languages. I felt like an Aussie hick. But you don’t have to spend six months overseas immersing yourself in the culture to learn another
language. Australia has between 250 and 500 Indigenous languages (including dialects) and Aunty Jacinta Tobin of the Darug is leading introductory one-hour classes in Sydney’s local language* during this year’s Sydney Festival (sydneyfestival.org. au/bayala). The Bayala (“let’s speak”) language revitalisation program began last year and was so popular it has now doubled in size. Aunty Jacinta, who has been teaching Indigenous songs and culture for 20 years, shares her tips.
warami
• Animal names including wombat, wallaby and dingo are of Darug origin. • Hello is warami (pronounced waramee). Mi refers to “my eyes” and wara refers to distance, so together it means “my eyes see you now from a distance”. The closest word to goodbye is yanu, which means “I’m walking away”, while the closest word to thank you is didjurigura, which means “I’ve had enough”. • Darug people don’t pronounce the sounds ‘p’ or ‘t’, so the suburb Parramatta is pronounced ‘Burramadda’. Parra means eel while matta refers to water place. Waratah is also pronounced ‘waradah’. • Sentences are structured from big to small, so instead of saying, “There’s a canoe (nuwi) on the beach” Darug people would say, “The beach has a canoe”. • Captain Cook heard a clan in Queensland call kangaroos such, and it became the common name for the native animal. But in Sydney kangaroos were called buru, inspired by the sound they
•

make hopping. Many words came from an associated sound. Bondi, for example, sounds like a powerful wave crashing. While there are few swear words in the Darug language, there were some insults. Wargulmi means one eye, implying the recipient can only see with limited vision. The word corroboree originated in Sydney, but has come to describe events where Indigenous people gather to tell Dreaming stories through song and dance across the country. It is spelt garriberri in Darug. Boomerang also comes from Sydney, but there were different designs for the weapon depending on the type and size of animal being hunted, and each would have had its own name. It’s important to remember not to use words from Sydney in other parts of the country, where they have different meanings. In parts of Western Australia kuri (koori in English), which describes Indigenous people on the east coast of Australia, means excretion.

22-23_EXPERIENCE_FOOD TREND.indd 22
could it be possible that diet plus contentment equals a very long life? The ‘Hawaii of Japan’, Okinawa has become a place to escape, relax and eat well. And this could be the key to why so many residents have celebrated 100 or more birthdays. Nutritionists and other researchers have studied the Okinawan lifestyle and found the incidence of arteriosclerosis, breast, stomach and prostate cancer is lower. Their
conclusions support the locals’ beliefs. Okinawa is one of five Blue Zones, areas where people enjoy active lives to the century mark – and higher. The others are Sardinia, California’s Loma Linda, Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and Greek island Ikaria. In the downtown food market of Naha, Okinawa’s capital, we discover a smorgasbord of mineral-rich seaweed: heaps of glowing limegreen sea grapes that pop
like caviar in the mouth, belts of khaki-coloured kelp, tubs of sea-green wakame and others that only an Okinawan fisherman would recognise. Fermented food is also believed to contribute to longevity. Here, soy sauce, vinegars and pickles feature, and tofu comes in all forms, including a fluoro-pink fermented version described as ‘Okinawa’s camembert’. Okinawan purple sweet

potatoes (imo) and white or sprouted brown rice are key contributors to the locals’ carb-loaded, low-fat diet. Other pantry staples are soya beans, mugwort (an aromatic medicinal herb) and the antioxidant, turmeric. Squeeze shikuwasa, a local lime, liberally into any drink and it may keep cancer away. Bitter melon, cucumber’s warty ugly sister, is believed to be effective with controlling diabetes, respiratory diseases and cancer prevention.
A meal in Okinawa may be simply a bowl of firm and chewy soba noodles in a miso broth with kombu, or it might be chanpuru, a stir-fry of bitter melon, bean sprouts and tofu, but their subtle aroma and umami will stay with you long after you have eaten. And, no, umami is not another weird vegetable. It’s that lingering brothlike taste, often found in fermented foods, mushrooms and meat dishes, which improves flavour and stays deliciously with you. The Okinawa Program, a book published worldwide, has highlighted the value

of the island’s simple diet – based on vegetables, rice, sea vegetables, tofu, a little meat and minimal salt – believed to prevent several chronic diseases. To prepare this book, doctors Bradley and Craig Willcox and Makoto Suzuki meticulously researched the island people’s lifestyle. Their conclusions were that the Okinawans’ kilojoule-light diet, combined with an active lifestyle, meant they remained slimmer and healthier, and stayed more youthful. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to perfect health. Biological clocks must be extended by lifelong habits. If you visit Okinawa and dine in a locally run restaurant* (Emi-noMise in Ogimi Village and Garamanjaku in Kin Town are popular recommendations) you too will have the chance to enjoy a taste of what contributes to an Okinawan’s happy, healthy – and very long – lifespan.

Christchurch Art Gallery reopened in December 2015 after extensive earthquake prevention work. It’s once again a world-class public exhibition space – now built around five permanent custom pieces acquired through crowd funding. One of the works, Martin Creed’s semi-ironic neon, capitalised script Everything is Going to be Alright, glows along the building’s exterior. It’s all about keeping you moving and your heart rate up is great for people of any age, fitness level, or tennis ability. While you don’t need to have played tennis before, you will need a racquet and correct footwear. Clubs that offer cardio tennis are often keen to let new players experience the class.
About six months after I started playing, my club offered me a “Bring a Friend for Free” pass to a class. I challenged my husband, a decent club tennis player, to join me. “But isn’t that only for the ladies?” he questioned, before reluctantly agreeing to come along.
Once on the court, he discovered the session was challenging, fun and social. He is, of course, hooked and plays weekly in our group, which is now evenly split between men and women. EVERY WEDNESDAY evening, I hit the tennis court. But this is not tennis as you may know it. The court is littered with yellow fitness ladders, colourful cones and, often, hurdles and medicine or soccer balls. Pop music blares across the court as six people warm up. They’re running laps of the court and doing high-knees, ankle-taps and sideways leaps along the baseline. They’re dressed in bright leggings or shorts, with fitness or heart monitors clipped to their wrists or waists. At this stage, there’s not even a tennis racquet in anyone’s hand. This is Fitbit Cardio Tennis, a high-energy group workout that puts the focus on working up a sweat, improving handeye coordination, having fun and boosting your overall wellbeing, rather than winning points. Classes run for 45 or 60 minutes and are made up of a series of drills and games, but there’s no pressure to hit winners – it’s not even that important to hit the ball. It’s all about keeping you moving and your heart rate up. Fitbit Cardio Tennis

Are Your Hormones Making You Fat? Imagine waking up every morning to the sound of your alarm, excited and happy to be starting a new day. When you look in the mirror you admire your body. Everyone tells you how great you’re looking. Sound too good to be true? If you, like many other women, don’t feel this way, you may have a hormonal imbalance. Research has documented that over 40 per cent of women have an undiagnosed underactive thyroid gland. If you feel tired all the time, crave sugar, use alcohol and coffee to lift yourself, retain weight around your middle and feel the cold, you could be suffering from this problem. What Does Your Thyroid Do, and What Does This Mean For You? The thyroid gland is the major player in controlling how many calories you burn. It produces hormones that control the body’s metabolism. If your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) it’s almost impossible to lose that spare tyre around your middle, no matter how many carbs you cut out or how many hours you spend on the treadmill. Blood Testing Current blood testing methods don’t tell the whole story. Blood tests (TSH) can only measure how much thyroid hormone you have in your blood – they can’t measure how well your hormones are working. So, if you do have a thyroid problem, it may not always be picked up. New Way of Testing American thyroid specialists, Dr. Konrad Kail and Dr. Daryl Turner have developed a quick and non-invasive medical thyroid screening test, that’s been used by US doctors for the past ten years to accurately diagnose thyroid issues. The good news is, once your thyroid function is accurately diagnosed, the medication and nutrients you need to get your thyroid balanced can be established. With a balanced thyroid your energy will increase, you will lose weight easily, and you’ll feel happier in yourself. Your health is your greatest asset, so, if you suspect that your thyroid isn’t quite right, don’t put off getting tested, you deserve to feel fantastic every day.

GEELONG-BORN entrepreneurial twin sisters Sarah (left) and Emily Hamilton are the brains behind beauty subscription service bellabox. Last year, they launched Sand & Sky, an Australian cosmetic brand that quickly became a hot beauty item, thanks to the combination of its signature product (a face mask), Insta-friendly personality, the glowing endorsements of highprofile beauty bloggers and Australian-sourced natural ingredients. We asked Sarah about the mask that’s taken the beauty world by storm.
Why a mask? The mask phenomenon is huge but I feel it’s hard to find time to do a mask. So I wanted to create a mask where people would actually see something at the end of it. Typically, masks are designed for women, but both girls and guys use ours. My skin can be dull, but after using the mask it feels so firm and clean. And it’s great for acne too. I love seeing other people using it and that they get the same results. We can see on social media how people are using the mask – the effects are immediate.

What makes Sand & Sky special? The Australian ingredients felt so amazing; the pink clay from Western Australian and South Australia is so soft on the skin. It’s a way of bringing a little bit of Australia to the world.
What’s next? We’ve got more pink clay products in the pipeline, using the same ingredients. Our experience told us that the international audience wanted natural products produced in pristine environments.

33 or all its charm, the allure of Ho Chi Minh City’s organised chaos has its limits. Spend some time in rush-hour traffic and even the most devout urbanite will tire of blaring horns, hazy skylines and whiteknuckle drivers. Peace of mind may seem impossible to achieve while dodging motorbikes or navigating the cacophony on any given street corner, but the city's residents manage to find ways to recharge in the big city. services including hairwashing, manicures and skincare treatments. Some residents, however, are better at self-care than others – after an excess of caffeine, one too many nights out, and an avalanche of unread emails, I set out on my own quest to de-stress and experience the city’s more mindful side. My first stop is Mandala Wellness (mandalawellness.com.vn), a holistic centre whose services run the gamut from juice cleanses to acupuncture, qi gong, and life coaching. experience, sending me off to a quick slumber before I was woken and ferried out looking a little brighter than when I arrived. Peak relaxation, however, came at District 2’s Aveda Spa (avedaherbal.com). Housed in a spacious villa, this spa employs the traditional Indian techniques of Ayurvedic massage. Catered to each individual’s prakriti, or body constitution, services feature a tailormade combination
of herbal oils and emphasise the opening of the body’s energy channels, which is believed to detoxify and revitalise. Spa owner Poonam Barthwal explains the basic tenets of Ayurveda and assesses my body’s constitution through questions about my hair, skin, appetite and mood. My answers and pulse gave it away: I was a pitta, the constitution associated with fire. My Ayurvedic treatment, abhyanga, consisted of a synchronised, four-hand full-body massage. At first, the feeling of many hands was a little jarring, but once the masseuses got into a rhythm I could feel my body begin to relax. The motions of
abhyanga are slow and steady, covering the entire body head to toe. By the time the massage was complete, I could have sunk into the table I was so calm. But a few minutes zipped up in a tent-like personal steam bath jolted me awake before I was sent back on my way – no closer to quitting caffeine, staying in, or clearing my email inbox, but recharged and ready to face the daily adventure of life in Ho Chi Minh City.

She warned that the full effect of the treatment wouldn’t arrive until later in the day – and it did; come nightfall, I was out like a light – I walked out of the room feeling oddly awake and pampered from the ankles down. Thoroughly detoxified, my next mission was to counter the wear and tear of the city's heat, dust and humidity. L’Apothiquaire (spasaigon.com), a plush District 3 spa specialising in skincare, boasts its own line of natural, organic products for this very purpose. My equally perceptive L’Apothiquaire consultant extracted the finer details of my personal skincare habits from nothing more than a momentary inspection of my face, and prescribed a 90-minute Soin Transparence facial to cleanse and heal my skin. The first few minutes were spent bathing my face and décolletage in a hot, purifying steam before zeroing in on my blemishes. With each rejuvenating mask, I could feel my skin tightening. othing says summer like a tray of plump, perfumed mangoes. The messiest fruit in the world, mangoes demand to be eaten solo – nothing beats the greedy enjoyment of a whole fruit’s sticky juice dribbling down your chin and over your fingers, as you bite and suck the last pieces of flesh from the stubby core. It may not be elegant, but it’s always sublime. December and January are the peak of mango season in Australia, although we’re lucky to be able to continue eating them through to the end of March, and April if the weather is blessed. From an industry of backyard growers to a major agricultural commodity, Australia now produces more than eight million trays each season sourced from Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. More than 10 varieties are grown commercially, but most will be familiar with the Kensington Pride, Calypso, Honey Gold and R2E2 varieties, all at their peak in high summer. Native to south Asia, the mango is cultivated in tropical zones globally, and cuisines from across these regions have turned it into a range of delicious treats. Think India’s refreshing mango lassi, the mango puddings and
36-37_EXPERIENCE_RECIPE.indd 37
jellies found throughout south-east Asia and Australia’s iconic Weis Bar, the frozen mango and ice-cream concoction that’s become the quintessential taste of summer. But Thailand’s khao niao mamuang (sticky rice with mango), a simple dish of sweetsalty steamed rice with coconut cream and wedges of mango, is surely the queen of all mango desserts. At Michelin-starred Bo.Lan in Bangkok, chefs Duangporn ‘Bo’ Songivsava and Dylan ‘Lan’ Jones are known for their commitment to safeguarding Thai cuisine and their innovative interpretations of Thai classics. But the chefs are equally as passionate about the famous streetfood snack. When they hanker after the original, the chefs head to the famous Mae Varee Fruit Shop (conveniently around the corner from Bo.Lan), where stands piled high with mangoes signpost the entrance to the store that has been serving up the dish for 35 years. Bo and Dylan both appreciate the soothing nature of Thailand’s favourite comfort food. “We love it as a dessert after a fiery meal,” they say. Mae Varee is at 1, Soi Thong Lor Road, Sukhumvit, Bangkok bolan.co.th
Bo & Dylan’s sticky rice with mango SERVES FOUR METHOD Soak the sticky rice in cold water overnight. Place rice in a steamer basket lined with cheesecloth. Steam on a rolling boil until cooked (about 20 minutes). As soon as the rice is completely cooked remove it from the steamer and place it in a plastic container. In a separate bowl mix the coconut cream with the salt and sugar to taste. The sugar should make the cream almost transparent and it should taste sweet and slightly salty. Gradually add the coconut cream mix to the rice until you can draw your middle finger through the grains without them sticking. Cover the rice, then wrap the container in a towel and keep in a warm place for a further 30 minutes. Turn the rice over and allow it to sit while you make the sauce. Heat the coconut cream for the sauce until it boils. In a small bowl mix the rice flour with a teaspoon of the hot coconut cream until it is smooth. Whisk the flour mixture into the coconut cream and simmer until thickened. Season with sugar and salt to taste.
As fresh coconut cream varies in sweetness, adjust quantities of sugar and salt to taste each time you make this dish.
INGREDIENTS • 200g glutinous rice • 200ml fresh coconut cream • Sea salt and sugar to taste
SAUCE • 200ml fresh coconut cream • 2 tsp rice flour • Sea salt and sugar to taste • Toasted yellow beans or toasted sesame seeds • Jasmine flowers to garnish • Peeled fresh mango
37
Place a mound of the still warm cooked rice in a bowl. Top with peeled mango, toasted beans or sesame seeds, pour over a little of the sauce and garnish with flowers. Bo and Dylan say fresh coconut cream is essential for sticky rice with mango. To make 400ml of cream you’ll need two coconuts. This amount will also yield around 800ml of coconut milk.

Sisters, driving for Four children, several careers and one divorce later, George McEncroe backed a great idea – and herself WORDS PETER BARRETT
How did you come up with the idea? I had to give up teaching after having kids, but then I started writing, doing stand-up comedy and commercial radio. When my marriage broke down we sold the house and I had a big chunk of money, but no bank would give me a loan. I looked at driving for Uber and thought, this is just too scary a prospect. At the same time my daughter was hitting her party years at 17 and coming home with scary stories of her own. I thought, wouldn’t it be great if there was this option of calling a female rideshare to take you home?
38-39_EXPLORE_WORK & PLAY.indd 38
George’s got drive
How has the business grown? We launched on International Women’s Day with 20 drivers in Melbourne and 40 in Brisbane. Now we’ve got 650 drivers between Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, and another 1500 about to be accredited. Our WA launch was just before Christmas. Did it all go to plan? One of the biggest hurdles was getting the exemption to run an all-women’s service in NSW. The NSW Taxi Council had
The name appeared to me in a dream no database for sexual misconduct in taxis but we were required to provide evidence from them for the exemption. It was a classic, bureaucratic, catch-22 situation. It wasn’t until we looked at the other exemptions that had been granted – including one for a men’s only flute group – that I finally wrote a facetious letter in frustration. And it worked.
What have you learnt? There are a lot of women who’ve got a lot of good business ideas and they should give it a crack because there’s more and more support now and there’s more and more of a market. You only go round once – don’t die with the music in you. Give it a red-hot go. What is Shebah? Shebah is a ride-sharing platform for women and children I founded in March 2016. The name appeared to me in a dream. Sheba (without the h) was famous for challenging the wisdom of King Solomon; she’s sort of the first single mother in history, so she’s a good symbol for us.

About the photographer
“Regular doses of ‘vitamin sea’ are a beautiful reminder of why we call Sydney home,” Christie says. Of all Sydney’s beaches, Bondi Beach has the most pull, the epicentre of a heaving suburb full of bars, backpackers and well-tanned locals. The kilometre-long stretch of sand is estimated to attract more than two million visitors annually, and is home to the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club – the world’s oldest – as well as the country’s oldest and largest swimming club, the Bondi Icebergs, who train at Bondi Baths year round. “Locals see Bondi and
the surrounding area as a lifestyle versus a destination,” Christie says. “(It’s) a place to unwind, enjoy fresh produce at local cafés and restaurants, connect with nature and spend quality time with friends and family.” Having grown up in Sydney, Christie has her own Bondi memories of eating iceblocks on the sand and watching waves break over Bondi Baths. Christie’s images of this legendary beach and the walk out to Bronte offer a sundrenched glimpse into a coastal lifestyle most city-dwellers could only dream about.

fter a time spent living away from her native Sydney, photographer Christie Moore revisited her favourite local stroll – the Bondi to Bronte Beach Coastal Walk – armed with her camera. “It was a lovely, sunny day,” she says. “I had just returned from a year spent living in Paris and was experiencing the beautiful blue coastline in a whole new light.” The roughly threekilometre walk, from the world-famous Bondi Beach to local favourite Bronte, is one of the most scenic ambles in the extremely photogenic NSW capital. Starting off above the iconic Bondi Baths, the path follows sandstone cliffs above the sweep of the South Pacific Ocean, revealing rockpools, surf breaks and hidden beaches. With more than 100 beaches found within city limits, the ocean looms large in the lives of people in the Harbour City. On any of the city’s many warm afternoons, Sydneysiders flock to the coast to dip in pretty sea baths, wade out at a favourite beach or sun themselves on the rocks.

ustralia’s best food city? It’s Melbourne, of course. The southern capital is blessed with great coffee, a buzzing café scene, and the most acclaimed restaurants (with Attica, Australia’s highest entry on the The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, to prove it). But when it comes to food, Melbourne hasn’t always been so marvellous. Before WWII, things were decidedly “white bread”. Meat and three veg ruled the dinner table. Olive oil was only found in pharmacies. Salami was treated with the utmost suspicion. It’s largely thanks to waves of migrants, each group carving out its own suburban niche and introducing its culture through food, that Melbourne’s eating scene has gone from zero to hero. From post-war European migration to later arrivals from Vietnam, India, Africa and more, Melbourne has become one delicious melting pot. And with secondgeneration chefs now adding modern spins to the food of their childhoods, things sure are getting interesting.

VIETNAMESE
MIDDLE EASTERN Wandering along Sydney Road, Brunswick, is like being transported half a world away. You’ll see robed men fiddling with prayer beads, women doing the shopping in hijab or chadors, and dozens of shops, restaurants and bakeries with their olfactory calling card of duskily exotic yet now-familiar spices. Though time isn’t standing still in the city’s Middle Eastern heartland. The long queues for the Ottolenghi-style salads at Very Good Falafel show that Melbourne is taking its Middle Eastern snacking seriously. Popular at hip bakery/café Zaatar is the decidedly modern signature snack “Zoccacia” — a giant toasted sandwich filled with soujok (Turkish spiced sausage), haloumi, kofte or bastourma (air-dried beef). Zaatar is high on the list of recommendations from Ely Makool, a member of the Lebanese family behind another Melbourne success story. The Makools took over the then-unremarkable Oasis Bakery in Murrumbeena in the ’90s and turned it into a suburban powerhouse with a café pumping out fresh pastries and Lebanese pizza, and shelves lined with

around 4000 different grocery items, from spices to Marwa Makool’s cookbook, Yallateef. “The bakery is our heritage,” says Ely. “Once, our customer base was purely Middle Eastern but it’s now grown to include pretty much anyone. It’s been really interesting to watch.”

The Vietnamese have a saying: If you want to eat, you have to get in the kitchen and cook. It was something chef Jerry Mai took to heart, teaching herself from a young age how to make simple things such as stir-fries and fried rice. Perhaps it was the legacy of her parents, Vietnamese refugees who started a café in their Thai refugee camp when Jerry was an infant. When the family arrived in Brisbane in the early 1980s though, authentic Vietnamese ingredients were hard to come by. “If we wanted green mango I had to climb up a tree. There was tamarind growing along the Brisbane River so I’d clamber around there,” Jerry says. She trained under luminaries such as David Thompson and today owns Melbourne’s two popular Pho Nom hawker food shops and the recently opened modVietnamese restaurant Annam, all in the CBD. “Things are so much different now, produce is grown in north Queensland, we don’t have to import things.” Jerry found herself between two worlds in Australia. On arriving in Melbourne during her late high school years, Melbourne’s so-called “Little Saigons” in Springvale, Footscray and Richmond were full of people eating banh mi, but few non-Vietnamese would have been able to identify by name the baguette traditionally filled with pork and paté. These days, with Annam joining the likes of the envelopepushing Anchovy in Richmond and the “cheeky Chinese” of Lee Ho Fook in the CBD – “both doing really great things, modernising their food”, says Jerry – it’s a different landscape. “People have a 100 per cent better understanding now of Vietnamese food, and Asian food in general.”

JEWISH
Indian fine dining at Tonka in CBD Melbourne. BELOW: The iconic Glick’s bakery.
Jewish deli culture is trending across the globe
INDIAN Butter chicken. Rogan josh. Vindaloo. The Indian canon has been taken up by a string of suburban restaurants, most offering an identikit menu of quasi-Indian favourites. Melburnians love Indian food but have only scratched the surface of the subcontinent’s incredible and varied cuisine. The Gandhi family has been at the forefront of introducing the full glorious spectrum of Indian dining. It opened Bombay By Night, the city’s first “proper”
Indian restaurant, in 1999 with the then-revolutionary concept of Indian food steeped in excellent produce and quite at home with linen tablecloths. The family sold in 2015, when the second-gen Indian food scene was gearing up, with places such as modern-Indian CBD venue Tonka and street food-centric Babu Ji (St Kilda) and Horn Please (Fitzroy North) pushing the subcontinental envelope. But the Gandhis – son Ravnish and parents Jaspal and Arvind – are back with St Kilda’s smart Café Southall. Here, the days of Bombay By Night are being reprised with a menu both recognisable and mysterious. The “naan Roquefort” marries traditional flatbread with French blue cheese, crumbed paneer, ginger, roasted walnuts and a sticky red-chilli glaze. You’ll also find keema, minced lamb with dark-roasted spices, as a late-night booze-sopper. Ravnish says Melbourne’s Indian scene is 15 years behind London or New York. “We still want to push the boundaries … but ultimately it’s about creating tasty food. All in good time.”
PHOTOGRAPHY TIM GREY PHOTOGRAPHY, GLICK’S BAKERIES
58
The Glick’s story is legend in Melbourne. Polish-born holocaust survivor Mendel Glick migrated to Australia in 1948 and began the now seven-strong chain of Glick’s bakeries with a small shop on Caulfield’s Kooyong Road in the 1960s. These days the area is known as Melbourne’s bagel belt, but authentic bagels weren’t to be found in Melbourne until Mr Glick, who died last year aged 92, revived an old European recipe and began his empire. His daughter Pauline Levitan, the manager at Glick’s Balaclava (she’s one of nine children, five of whom work in the family business), has lost track of how many bagels the bakery sells daily. She estimates about 2000, along with countless challah and sourdough loaves, and popularity is growing. Jewish deli culture is trending across the globe, and Glick’s keeps pace through social media and the creation of new products such as the “everything” bagel, encrusted with seeds and onion. “We got inspiration from New York for that one,” Pauline says. The inner south-east is Melbourne’s Jewish epicentre, with St Kilda’s Acland Street a hotspot for traditional Eastern European cake shops. A handful of historic patisseries still operate, such as Europa Cake Shop with its faultless baked cheesecakes and Le Bon Continental Cake Shop with its delectable almond tarts. But to see where the next generation is taking things, try nouveau Elsternwick café Penta, where the housemade beetroot bagels, filled with cured salmon, egg and watercress salad, make your breakfast positively blush.

Pork is the way it’s done in Greece
GREEK 60
Souvlaki isn’t just souvlaki. It might sound odd for the city with the biggest Greek population outside of Greece, but Melbourne has only recently discovered the pork souvlaki thanks to pioneers such as John Ghionis. “Pork is the way it’s done in Greece – you’d be really hard pressed to find lamb anywhere,” John says. He’s the owner of Fairfield’s Spitaki, where the charcoal spit is anointed with only pork and chicken. “Australia’s got this idea that it’s lamb, but that’s not the truth. And in Greece you do put a few chips inside the souvlaki, too.” The Greeks were one of the most enthusiastic nationalities seizing the opportunity to immigrate after WWII. Oakleigh in Melbourne’s south-east remains one of the preferred suburbs, as does Brunswick, where souvlaki shops are never hard to find. John has witnessed the growing affection for Greek food first-hand. While the likes of George Calombaris, of Press Club, Hellenic Republic and MasterChef fame, have become the public face of renewed Greek culinary pride, John is a big believer in keeping
things simple – as expressed in Spitaki’s slogan, #NoMalakies, which translates (loosely) as “no bullshit”. “It’s just good Greek food. Our recipe for the chips is, we cut the chips and when the oil is hot we cook the chips, then we salt the chips.” And maybe the Melbourne

souva has, in fact, surpassed those in Greece. “I go back to Greece and they’re doing their meat on gas, not charcoal, and using frozen chips, not hand cut,” he says. “I have someone in my shop, handcutting potatoes all day, every day.”

n a back alley in Brunswick, a grown man is behaving like a kid. Dean Sunshine should be running his family textiles business. Instead, the lithe, curly-headed 50-year-old is darting about the bluestone lane behind his factory, enthusiastically pointing out walls filled with colourful artworks. It’s an awesome, open-air gallery, he says, that costs nothing and is in a constant state of flux. Welcome to Dean’s addiction: the ephemeral, secretive, challenging, and sometimes confronting world of Melbourne street art and graffiti. Over the past 10 years, Dean has taken more than 25,000 photographs and produced two books (Land of Sunshine and Street Art Now) documenting the work of artists who operate in a space that ranges from a legal grey area to a downright illegal one. “I can’t drive along a street without looking sideways down a lane to see if there’s something new there,” he says. “And it doesn’t always have to be about a beautiful mural that’s painted, it can be the smallest little thing. I saw something hand-written with chalk on a wall the other day. It said, ‘We can’t believe that they used to eat animals. Signed, Future Generation.’ Genius!” For a complex set of reasons, street art has flourished in Melbourne over the past 20 years, to the point where its tourist drawcard has forced local governments to not only tolerate, but also embrace, certain aspects of it. These days councils, including the City of Melbourne, make a distinction between acceptable street art (artistic works done with the permission of building owners) and illegal graffiti (any writing or images carried out without proper permission). As a movement, street art is entering the mainstream. The latest book to celebrate the scene is by Melbourne

artist, author and educator, Lou Chamberlin. Burn City: Melbourne’s Painted Streets presents a mind-boggling diversity of artistic expression, from elaborate, letter-based aerosol “pieces” to stencils, portraits, “paste-ups” (paper works glued to the wall), sculptures, yarn-based works, stickers and even dioramas. “There is so much happening that the hubs, such as Hosier Lane, Stevenson Lane and Presgrave Place, are so short of space that the art work is layered,” Lou says. “Something you see one week can be replaced or covered by something new the next. It’s this constant change and development that I think keeps the scene in Melbourne so alive and energetic.” One of the first people to document Melbourne’s graffiti was photographer Rennie Ellis. In three books – Australian Graffiti (1975), Australian Graffiti Revisited (1979) and The All New Australian Graffiti (1985) – Rennie captured many of the cheeky, sardonic and protest comment he found on Melbourne walls, such as “NO STANDING, ONLY DANCING.” In 1984, American artist Keith Haring put the spotlight

on street art when he painted several murals in Melbourne, including an iconic wall that survives today at the former Collingwood Technical College. Meanwhile, young, mostly male, graffiti “writers” made their illegal marks on trains and train lines around Melbourne. And, thanks to the city’s topography (easily accessed with plenty of lanes tucked away from prying eyes), not to mention its rich artistic scene, street art began to rapidly evolve. According to the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) senior curator of Australian Art, David Hurlston, Melbourne artists were influenced in those pre-internet years by the graffitied Brooklyn streets and subways they saw on music television (MTV) and films, such as Beat Street (1984). “But because Melbourne was isolated in the sense that it didn’t have that direct connection, it developed what became a very interesting, independent style,” David says. “It was clearly influenced by New York, but that’s what makes it so unique.” By the early 2000s stencil art emerged as a genre above all others. These clever, often provocative images cut into card and then painted onto surfaces earned Melbourne
an international reputation, bringing artists and admirers from near and far. British street artist Banksy famously left several stencilled deep-sea divers and parachuting rats around the city in 2003. Local artists continued to test boundaries with police, producing more elaborate works in bolder, more publicly visible places. “It was exciting,” says Berlin-born art curator Jan Dirk Mittmann, who ran the Melbourne Stencil Festival from 2004 to 2008. “Stencils were popping up like mushrooms in various lanes and back streets around Melbourne. But it was also very underground.” Then, in 2005 authors Carl Nyman and Jake Smallman made the reputation official with their book on the scene – Stencil Graffiti Capital: Melbourne. Of course, the Melbourne street-art scene hasn’t stayed still. Today, private building owners and councils including Melbourne, Port Phillip and Yarra regularly commission works; street-art agency Juddy Roller has brought the movement to regional Victoria through the Silo Art Trail and the Benalla Street Art Wall To Wall Festival; and, while Melbourne street artists such as Rone, Adnate, Lushsux and Smug may not be household names yet, their combined 560,000 Instagram followers suggest that interest is building. Geelong-born Rone moved to Melbourne in 2001 and experimented with stencils, paste-ups and hand-drawn posters before finding his rhythm with large-scale, freehandpainted portraits of female faces. In 2014 he painted several large murals inside the NGV for a Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition and now regularly flies around the world for commissions, where he has noticed many cities attempting to emulate Melbourne’s look. “It feels very staged,” he says of those overseas cities. “Melbourne has grown organically so it’s

palpable, it’s audible. Behind a graffitied wooden hoarding, nail guns and electric saws thump and whine away, building the latest outlet for streetwear retailer, Culture Kings. As well as DJs and a barber, Dan says a basketball court is planned. “But does everybody get to play basketball? Do these guys get to come in and play basketball?” he gestures to a couple of scruffy looking homeless guys. “Or is it just about commodifying the culture and selling it to the tourists that come through?” Later, Dan has us trawling through a few lesser-known laneways, eyes peeled for the tell-tale signs of particular artists: the concrete sculpted wine casks and firearms of Will Coles; the geometric-line drawings of Sunfigo; and yes, even a parachuting rat or two from Banksy. Soon I begin to see art almost everywhere I look. Maybe, I think, this is how the addiction starts.

more of a wild jungle of art compared to this finished exhibition feeling.” Art collectors are getting on board, too. Melbourne-based couple Andrew King and Sandra Powell sold an impressive collection by artists including Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker and Brett Whiteley to make room after stumbling across books on Banksy and French street artist Blek le Rat on a 2008 visit to London. “At that moment I just realised the audacity and the derring-do and the incisiveness of the social commentary,” Andrew says. “I bought the books and that was it.” Today, the pair, known as Sandrew, has amassed more than 2000 works of street art, including Australia’s largest Banksy collection. It’s Tuesday, just after lunch, and we are standing in what our guide Dan, himself a street artist from Docklands’ Blender Studios, calls “the kiddie pool”: Rutledge Lane, a U-shaped, dumpster-lined alley that runs off the city’s most famous graffiti spot, Hosier Lane. It’s where many graffiti artists make their start and the walls have become so heavily adorned over the years that in places you can peel off layers of paint as thick as your finger. Dan, who uses found objects to create clever sculptures under the name Junky Projects, is taking us on a street-art tour of the city. Our group, which includes a Singaporean family of three, a Dutch 20-something, a young guy from Brisbane and two Kiwis, are here because of Melbourne’s international street art reputation. Back in Hosier Lane, we stand aside while a troop of uniformed primary school children streams past; the lane is otherwise thick with camera-wielding tourists jostling for prime position in front of the art. The tension here between unsanctioned and sanctioned art, free self-expression versus gentrification is not only

On warm evenings, open-air cinemas sprout across Melbourne. Belgrave’s Art Deco Cameo Cinemas runs summer screenings, including dog-friendly evenings, while sister cinema Lido airs flicks at its Hawthorn rooftop. The Moonlight Cinema also returns to the verdant Royal Botanical Gardens, where the now-nationwide event first started in 1995. Festival season is also in full swing. So Frenchy so Chic returns to the grand Werribee Mansion on 14 January, delivering cult French acts and a wealth of cheese, charcuterie and Champagne. Zoo Twilights at the Melbourne Zoo kicks off on 26 January, with artists such as Cut Copy, Ben Folds and Grizzly Bear competing with the lions’ twilight serenade. And Melbourne’s premier celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture rolls back into town. Along with the free opening Carnival in Alexandra Gardens on 14 January and the St Kilda Pride March on 28 January, Midsumma delivers a vibrant selection of theatre, live music, exhibitions and parties.
GAME, SET IF THERE’S ONE THING MELBOURNE PRIDES ITSELF ON AS MUCH AS ITS CULTURE, IT’S SPORT As the only city in the world with five internationalstandard sporting facilities on the CBD fringes, summer brings out Melbourne’s competitive side. For a fortnight every January, you can almost hear the twang of ball meeting racket from Melbourne Park as Australian Open fever grips the city. In between sets, relax in the Coopers beer garden or lunch in the Nobu and Rockpool pop-ups. Ground passes (from $49) represent good value for money, with the chance to see the greats in an early round or out on the training courts. The jewel in Melbourne’s sporting crown is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, known fondly as the ’G. Catch a game of cricket on the hallowed turf trodden by giants of the game such as ‘the Don’ (Donald Bradman) and ‘Warnie’ (Shane Warne). Throughout January, the ’G hosts everything from Big-Bash matches to one-day internationals. For your own moment of glory on the turf, try a game of barefoot bowls. Brunswick Bowling Club is one of Melbourne’s oldest, with a friendly vibe, barbecues and stubbies at ’70s prices. Fitzroy Bowling Club has 10 barefoot bowling greens, while the bowls club in the CBD’s Flagstaff Gardens will let you play into the evening.

The Cerberus Beach House kiosk in Half Moon Bay does a roaring trade with salty beachgoers, and is just around the corner from Black Rock – one of Melbourne’s prettiest beaches. To make a night of it, head to the reborn Stokehouse for sunset cocktails, oysters and the best views of booming St Kilda beach. City slickers can still keep their cool in inner-city baths. Don your best togs and bask on the concrete steps beside Fitzroy Pool, or claim a spot of lawn beside Prahran Pool for Sunday DJ sessions from 21 January. In hot weather, Melburnians head upwards to their favourite rooftops. From the DJs and open-air cinema at Rooftop Bar, to sophisticated cigar bar Siglo and tucked away Bomba Rooftop, it pays to look up. Locals will also be quick to nominate a preferred beer garden. Pooches are welcome at Carlton’s Great Northern, which also offers a serious craft beer list. Southside in Prahran, the College Lawn is a popular spot for a spritz and people watching. And in the city, the Garden State Hotel conceals an airy internal beer garden split over two levels. There’s no reason to head indoors either when it comes time to dine. Find Melbourne’s favourite food trucks Friday to Sunday at the 3000sqm Food Truck Park in Preston. Out west, the new Ascot Lot transforms a car park into a weekend streeteats smorgasbord. For a lazy day in the great outdoors, pack a picnic. South of the CBD, the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens are a popular spot, as is Edinburgh Gardens in the north and Williamstown Botanic Gardens in the west. Hit up one of Melbourne’s markets and stock up the hamper. Come evening, many of these markets are transformed. The Queen Victoria Market’s summer Night Market is back on Wednesdays for its 20th year, with an even bigger array of street food and stalls. South Melbourne Night Markets marks 10 years with live entertainment, delicious eats and great shopping every Thursday. Also on Thursdays, designers, artists and food trucks set up in O’Donnell Gardens for the laid-back St Kilda Twilight Market.

until spring flowers poke through the cover of snow, in Japan, no one hunkers. They celebrate. They thrive. Winter in Japan is about quirky local festivals, seasonal dishes and nationwide celebrations. It’s about welcoming in the new year with ancient traditions and modern festivities. In short, winter in Japan is about embracing the season for what it is, and enjoying everything it has to offer. The most obvious winter offerings, for foreign visitors at least, are the nation’s snow-covered mountains. The ski resorts of Hokkaido

y the time the first snow falls, it’s already begun. Winter is here. The fat, cottony flakes merely confirm what everyone in Japan has known for weeks: the seasons are changing, the culture is changing and everything from restaurant menus to the clothes people are wearing and activities they indulge in have begun to adapt to the cold weather. Nothing stops in winter in Japan. Nothing slows down. While in some countries the colder months are a time to hibernate, to hunker in front of a fire and refuse to emerge

bath. This style of onsen, usually set high in the mountains and open to the elements, provides the chance for bathers to indulge in that most spectacular of winter experiences: soaking in a steaming hot pool while snow falls on a natural wonderland. Many of Japan’s best rotenburo can be found in the high country, such as Kita, an historic area just near Tokyo, and at Dogashima Onsen in the Shizuoka area. Jigokudani is an onsen area popular not just with humans, but also a slightly cuter clientele: snow monkeys. These macaques gather at the hot springs near the city of Nagano to stay warm in the thermal waters and have become one of the country’s most photographed attractions. Even in Japan’s bustling metropolises – in cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Sapporo far away from the mountainside rotenburos – onsens are a popular winter attraction. and Honshu, the country’s two largest islands, receive almost unbelievable amounts of snow each season. Metre upon metre of it blankets the mountains and valleys along Japan’s raised spine. Mountain towns such as Niseko on Hokkaido, and Hakuba on Honshu, are as popular with visiting Australian skiers and snowboarders as they are with locals. These mountains are perfectly suited to families, beginners and hardcore powder hounds. You might not find terrain that’s as steep as in Europe or North America, but with up to 14 metres of snow falling in some areas each season, there’s no shortage of thigh-high powder. The atmosphere in Niseko and Hakuba, as well as in smaller resorts such as of Kamui Ski Links and Sahoro in Hokkaido, and Appi Kogen and Geto Kogen on Honshu, is laidback. Local farmers do out-of-season work as lift operators, and resort restaurants serve simple, hearty fare such as ramen noodles and katsu curry. The lift passes are cheap, and the people are friendly. What’s not to love? In Japan, however, skiing isn’t the only mountain-based obsession. There’s also a notinsignificant passion for onsens. The hot-spring baths and thermal pools are popular year-round for bathing and relaxing, but really come into their own in the colder months. This is when locals make a pilgrimage to their favourite rotenburo, or open-air

counterparts, but they still offer the chance to escape the cold while soaking in mineral-rich water and to emerge, hours later, cleansed and warmed to the core. Winter in Japan doesn’t halt the onslaught of pedestrians and commuters either – in fact, the skies in Tokyo are generally at their clearest in winter, with crisp, sunny days that draw people outdoors. You’ll see locals everywhere in the colder months, rugged up in puffer jackets and stylish boots to ensure the elements don’t infringe on their way of life. Japan’s bustling urban hubs stay open too – the shops, the bars, the gaming arcades, the manga stores, the cafés, the teahouses, the restaurants – they just adjust to the cold. Doors stay closed to keep warm air inside.

Drinkers sip hot sake in izakayas. You’ll find the likes of crab sushi, crab tempura, grilled crab, and even crab nabe on menus, particularly in Sapporo in the north and central metropolis Osaka, a city famous for its crustacean-based cuisine. the colder months. The Sapporo Snow Festival, a celebration of the skill of sculptors who work only with snow and ice, receives more than two million visitors each year. The Toka Ebisu Festival in Osaka attracts more than a million people who come to pray for success in business at a shrine in the middle of the city. The old capital of Nara also hosts Wakakusa Yamayaki, a January festival in which the grass on the hillside of Mount Wakakusa is set alight, and the Omizutori festival, a series of traditional rituals designed to welcome the beginning of spring. In nearby Kyoto, young archers test their skills at the traditional Omato Taikai festival, while in the Miyagi prefecture just north of Tokyo, men in straw costumes with heavily painted faces throw buckets of water on houses to protect them from fire as part of a festival called Yonekawa Mizukaburi. red, 48-metre kinetic sculpture, by New Zealand-born filmmaker and sculptor Len Lye, was designed to bend and wave in the breeze, and today it’s leaning like a drunken sailor out to sea. Heading east, we pass joggers, cyclists, skaters and an elderly man on a mobility scooter. Occasionally, heavy waves crash against the sea wall, throwing plumes of sea spray onto the path. The plan was to reach the walk’s eastern end, but after just 2km we’re brought to a sudden halt. In a reserve opposite the beach, some genius has set up a caravan selling French pastries, coffee and beer, surrounded by beanbags and deck chairs. Abandon the walk in favour of a cheeky pilsner? It’s Friday afternoon; it would be rude not to. The great thing about doing the coastal walkway (even just part of it) early on is that you can use it to justify overeating all weekend. New Plymouth is home to some seriously good restaurants, and I don’t just mean “good for the provinces”.

hen I first float the idea of spending a weekend in New Plymouth, my partner looks at me as though I’ve proposed we get matching butterfly tattoos. “New Plymouth? Isn’t that just a place you drive through on the way to somewhere else?” he asks. “No, that’s another place starting with P.” Even with the correct location established, he isn’t immediately convinced. New Plymouth is New Zealand’s 11th largest city (or its fifth smallest), located in the relatively isolated Taranaki region. If the North Island is shaped like a stingray, New Plymouth clings to its western wing, flanked by the windwhipped Tasman sea and rolling dairy farms. Picturesque, yes. But, as weekend getaways go, a remote city in provincial New Zealand isn’t at the top of his bucket list. Thankfully, I’ve got backup. In its Best in Travel 2017, Lonely Planet named Taranaki the second-best region in the world to visit, second only to Choquequirao in Peru. The ‘Naki was extolled for its dramatic natural scenery and thriving arts scene. Among its riches: epic surf beaches, a world-class art gallery, and a volcano so picture-perfect it once played Mt Fuji in a Tom Cruise film. We arrive on a Friday afternoon, and find the city bathed in spring sunshine. The sea air beckons, so we head towards the famous New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. This expansive 12km promenade hugs the shoreline from Port Taranaki in the west to the town of Bell Block in the east and meanders past black-sand beaches, art installations, farmland and parks – with plenty of zen spots to sit and gaze out to sea along the way. We start near the centre of town, at the Len Lye Wind Wand. This

Dinner that night is at Social Kitchen, a hip bistro serving killer cocktails and share plates under the watchful eyes of taxidermied animals. We split a gigantic Spanish sausage cooked in a Mibrasa (charcoal oven) with chimichurri, gooey cauliflower cheese and fennel salad. Every seat in the place is filled and the room swells with cheery conversation. Another of New Plymouth’s best is Monica’s Eatery, where we head for a late, lazy brunch the next morning. It’s a light-filled space decorated with hanging plants, natural wood and powder-blue leather seats. Adjacent to Monica’s is New Plymouth’s shiniest attraction, The Len Lye Centre at the GovettBrewster Art Gallery. You don’t have to know much about art to be wowed by the building, encased in shimmering waves of stainless steel. The whole building is playful and vaguely futuristic – a fitting temple for the visionary artist to whom the gallery is dedicated. During a guided tour, the gallery’s head of communications Kelly Loney says that when the Govett-Brewster opened in the ’70s as New Zealand’s first contemporary art gallery, not everyone could see its value. “It was all oil and gas around here back then, and some of the locals freaked out. But for people interested in art who have grown up with the gallery, this place has been like their church.” Len Lye bequeathed his entire collection to what he termed “the swingiest art gallery in the Antipodes” shortly before his death in 1980. Thirty-five years and $11.5 million later, the Len Lye Centre was unveiled, featuring an everchanging selection of his works, alongside exhibitions by like-

White) a cocktail bar-slash-Japanese restaurant (Snug Lounge) and The Public Catering Company, where I can attest to the deliciousness of the doughnuts. For the city’s best flat white, Ozone Coffee Roasters is just around the corner. Before we fly back to Auckland, there’s time to tick off one more thing. If we hadn’t been waylaid on the coastal walkway, we would have reached the award-winning Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. Spanning the Waiwhakaiho River, the 70-metre footbridge is said to represent the relationship between land, sea and wind, and to resemble either a whale skeleton or a breaking wave. Either way, it’s a work of art.
We reach the bridge on bikes from the hotel, somewhat battered from pedalling into a headwind. From its northern end the bridge perfectly frames Mount Taranaki, creating the ultimate photo opportunity. Unfortunately, we find the mountain veiled by a stubborn crown of cloud, and our selfies turn out less than spectacular. “Never mind,” I say. “We’ll be back again soon.” Maybe in late summer, when we can sunbathe on the black-sand beaches and swim in the wild ocean, or at Easter for a hike in Egmont National Park. Whenever we return to, I know that next time it’ll be an easy sell.

minded artists. We stand transfixed in front of Lye’s Universe – a largescale masterpiece of noisy, rolling steel – but my favourite pieces are his psychedelic, hand-drawn films. As someone who’s been known to suffer the odd bout of gallery fatigue, I’m pleased when we emerge from the Govett-Brewster feeling energised. After a quick change, we take the 10-minute stroll to Pukekura Park, an expansive oasis of native bush, sprawling lawns, lakes and exotic gardens in the heart of the city. New Plymouth hosts two major events each year, and both are held here. On summer nights (Dec-Feb), the TSB Festival of Lights illuminates the park. Then in March, the three-day WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) attracts some 12,000 punters and around 50 acts from the world over. Even when nothing’s on, this idyllic park is worth a visit. We meander around lakes dotted with ducklings, past historic native trees and blossoming rhododendrons. Somehow, we miss the fernery and the orchid collection but do make it to a little zoo, where enclosures of monkeys, birds and farm animals are set around a playground full of picnicking families. At the Tea House we hoover plum and crème fraîche ice-cream cones and admire Mount Taranaki across the lake. Our home for the weekend is King and Queen Hotel Suites, a chic boutique hotel in the fashionable West End Precinct. The area is centred around the historic White Hart Hotel, a majestic Victorian building that housed the town’s oldest (and most notorious) public bar. After decades of neglect, a clever makeover has transformed the site into a hub of upmarket eateries and retail stores. Among them: a craft-beer bar and pizzeria (Ms

n a blazing hot Saturday afternoon in January, a beach feast of King George Whiting teamed with chilled glasses of fiano from nearby McLaren Vale sets the perfect celebratory mood. Your car is parked on pure white sand at Aldinga Beach on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, and now you turn to watch 130 of the world’s elite cyclists flash past on the adjacent coast road. Such an unlikely grandstand view has made the Tour Down Under, Adelaide’s annual leg of the UCI World Tour, one of the world’s most popular cycling festivals. About 43,000 visitors come streaming into Adelaide for the tour, many bringing their own bikes to follow the riders each day, as about 840,000 spectators line the 800km route throughout the week. The 20th edition of the Tour Down Under, from 14 to 21 January, will pass through 81 metropolitan and regional towns, but the flavour of the event is established on the opening night, when a onehour criterium race around the city shows off Adelaide’s East End at twilight. It sets the right mood for visitors to indulge in the hectic bar and bistro scene that, in recent years, has transformed Adelaide’s nightlife. Try the exotic flavour of Africola, where chef Duncan Welgemoed blends his punk attitude with fine skill for an innovative take on modern African cuisine. Bistro Blackwood is the stylish eatery opened last year by chef Jock Zonfrillo, situated below his native cuisine fine-diner Orana, which was named 2017 Australian Restaurant of the Year

t’s a sunny November morning in Phuket, but Narissa Phokabutr and her friends look gloomy as they gaze out at the gentle tide rolling towards them on pristine Surin Beach. The busy winter dry season is just starting, and tourists are trickling in from all over the world in search of Phuket’s beautiful beaches, breathtaking scenery and superb scuba diving and snorkeling. For this eclectic group, however, early November marks the sad end of surfing season. Most of these women – known informally as the Phuket Surfer Girls – are Thai natives like Narissa, but a few are expats from far-away places like Australia, Russia, Norway and the US, and range in age from bubbly teenagers to women with busy jobs and grown children. Despite these differences, they are bonded by a shared love of surfing and the camaraderie derived from paddling out to sea in search of good waves. Afterwards, they chat on the sand sipping coconut shakes from nearby venders or head to Winnie Panglikit’s Surf’s Up Chill Bar near Surin, one of the best surf beaches. Others worth trying are Kata, Kalim, Kamala and Bangtao, all of which have average wave heights in the chest- to head-high range. Since most tourists visit Phuket during winter, when the ocean is a glassy oasis for swimming, the idea of surfing may seem puzzling, or even downright laughable. From early May to late October, however, south-west monsoons bring strong currents that turn Thailand’s largest island into an uncrowded, friendly and surprisingly good surfing destination with an extra bonus – no sharks! True, surfing isn’t traditionally associated with Phuket for good reason, so keep your expectations in check. The island is far from a world-class surf spot, but that means it’s both accessible and affordable if you aren’t a world-class surfer yourself. Enormous swells off other Asian tourist meccas such as Bali, for instance, attract the sport’s top performers, but scare off newbies as well as the children of understandably nervous parents. During the summer months, Phuket’s consistent and gusty onshore winds and strong-yet-manageable currents make it an ideal spot for beginners. It’s also a great

place for sports-minded tourists to catch some waves between snorkelling excursions or boat rides to Phang Nga Bay near the calmer eastern coast, or before relaxing with a Thai massage and a cold Singha beer. “You wouldn’t come here on a surfing holiday, but you would come here on holiday and catch a few waves. It’s a great place to learn to surf,” says Rick Gamble, owner of the Saltwater Dreaming Surf n Skate Shop near Surin, which carries a wide range of boards and gear and offers group classes for as low as 600 baht ($24) per person. Surfing got off to a slow start in Phuket in the 1970s, and has only really taken off in the past six years, about when the Phuket Surfer Girls started to meet. Comprising around 20 women across the island, the group’s gathering points match the two main centres for renting surfboards; Surin or neighbouring Bangtao in northern Phuket and Kata further south. “We don’t get together too often as one big group because Phuket is so big,” says Narissa, a successful real estate agent with a young son. She discovered surfing after he was born in 2012, as a way to cope with the additional stress and responsibility of motherhood. “Being on the ocean waiting for a wave is so therapeutic. I can get away from everything else going on for a while,” she says. Narissa and her friends are no beach-bunny Gidget-types, either. They are justifiably proud of their powerful, athletic bodies and eager to be strong, active and healthy role models for a new generation of girls growing up in Phuket. women posing on beaches rather than surfi ng strong waves like their male counterparts. “It’s about fun and fi tness, not how you look in a bikini,” she states. The group actively seeks out opportunities to introduce surfing to girls aged seven and eight in local villages like Bang Tao, a largely Muslim community populated mainly by fishing families. Sports are not widely encouraged for girls in this area, and women in general in Thailand, like many Asian countries, often try to avoid outdoor activities that might darken their skin. For a large swath of Thai society, tanned skin is associated with the manual outdoor labour performed by poor families, so light skin is favoured as being more beautiful as well as prosperous, a prejudice the Phuket Surfer Girls are trying to change. The group has one standout example of just how excellent Thailand’s surfers can get. Annissa Flynn became the world champion in the women’s division at the 2017 World Flow Boarding Tour Finals in Cancun, Mexico in November last year. While she started surfi ng with the boys nine years ago, she’s an active member of the Kata-based Phuket Surfer Girls. “The group is really good, because it’s just for fun,” says the 19-year-old, while her father, a Phuketbased Australian architect, proudly stands nearby. WorldGroup found that 86 per cent of people believed they had the power to change their own level of wellness, and 66 per cent wanted to focus more on prevention,” she says. “Combined with the fact that trend research shows people wish to be elevated by their travel experience, and desire to be improved by their holiday … it’s easy to see why health tourism is an expanding market worldwide.”

Dedicated retreats As demand for healthy holidays grows, so too does the sophistication of dedicated retreats offering a holistic approach to wellbeing. Over 11 years Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, on Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland, has helped thousands check in, switch off and commit to a daily routine involving whole foods, sunrise tai chi, hinterland hikes and naturopathy. The property’s new meditation suites elevate the experience, featuring a Zen-like corner equipped with cushions, meditation

Gwinganna marketing manager Tracy Willis says there’s no typical wellness traveller anymore – people have different demands when booking a healthy holiday. “Primary wellness travellers seek to escape and disconnect from their lifestyle; they’re open to transformation. Secondary wellness travellers are seeking to maintain elements of their healthy lifestyle while travelling for business or pleasure,” she says. Gwinganna,
Tracy says, offers guests quietness for mind and support for body and soul. he concept of a healthy holiday is nothing new – for centuries, people have been travelling to farflung corners to “take the waters” or indulge in reviving spa treatments. Once the domain of the elite, wellness tourism has gone mainstream, and record numbers enjoy pampering and reflection on vacation. In fact, market research firm Statista projected wellness tourism to be worth more than $880 billion last year, growing at a rate almost double that of regular tourism. “We’re burnt out because of how fast life happens, and we’re looking for alternatives to feeling well,” says Monica Majors, of spa management company MSpa International, whose portfolio includes luxury hotel group Anantara. Lyndall Mitchell, founder of Aurora Spa and author of Chaos to Calm, agrees. “People understand the concept of wellness more – it’s a way of life, not just something you do now and again. People see it as having a real impact and benefit on their lives.” We’re also increasingly aware that we can take active steps to improve our health, says Sheila McCann, general manager of Thailand’s pioneering Chiva-Som retreat. “A 2016 Truth About Wellness study by McCann

from Tokyo to Bali. The mindfulness, relaxation and stress control package at Vietnam’s Amanoi, for example, includes meditation, tai chi, reiki, craniosacral therapy (gentle touch treatment) and spa treatments. Indonesia’s MesaStila, set in the heart of Java’s coffee country, offers a three-night cleansing retreat that includes a personal wellness plan working towards individual goals through daily exercise routines, nutritious meals, Turkishstyle baths and spa treatments. Closer to home, a number of Australian hotels and resorts offer similar packages. “Northern NSW and south-east Queensland have so much to offer,” Gwinganna’s Tracy Willis says. “With an outdoor lifestyle conducive to health and wellbeing, and easy access to organic food, many of the very best natural health practitioners, healers and dedicated wellness specialists choose to live in this region.” Many of them inspire pop-up programs such as the inaugural Happiness Retreat held at Elements of Byron in November – think beach yoga, daily meditation and workshops on achieving and maintaining happiness. Healthy hotels Savvy hoteliers around the world are beginning to realise that while people may not want all the trimmings of a wellness retreat, they do want healthy options when away from home. Through the Naturally Peninsula program at Peninsula Hotels in Hong Kong, Shanghai and other Asian locations, guests
can order dishes that place an emphasis on locally harvested produce, sustainably sourced seafood, grass-fed meats and wholegrains, free of artificial flavourings, refined sugars and preservatives. Six Senses Hotels Resorts has worked with nutritionists to deliver the Eat with Six Senses menu, offering low-sugar, lowsodium and hormone-free dining options. Guests at hotels around the world – including in Thailand (Koh Samui and Yao Noi) and Vietnam (Con Dao and Ninh Van Bay) – can also
try detoxifying smoothies and juices, low in fructose and designed to deliver micronutrients. The Six Senses group also recently launched a specialised sleep program to reduce jet lag. It covers everything from bedding – using handmade mattresses plus organic pillows and duvets – to bamboo-fibre pyjamas, eye masks and a jasmine sleep spritzer. Deep-sleep CDs, loaded with music guaranteed to conquer insomnia, also help tired travellers unwind at the Four Seasons in Singapore. When booking one of the Westin’s workout rooms in Sydney or Melbourne, you can have it fitted with a treadmill or a stationary bike so you can exercise at any hour of the day. If you forget your gym equipment or are packing light, you can also make the most of the group’s gear-lending program in collaboration with New Balance. At Novotel Rockford in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, yoga mats and jogging maps are available through the concierge, and the Park Hyatt Sydney offers a 6.6km vitality jog through the botanic gardens, led by a staff member.

etstar has launched a new vegan-friendly menu. The new options, available on the international network, were added in response to increasing customer requests for veganfriendly, gluten-free and related options. Jetstar reached out to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to collaborate on the new menu and worked closely with them to clarify food classifications and identify the most popular vegan products. PETA ambassador
Anna Weatherlake was excited to support the new vegan menu options. “It is absolutely fantastic that Jetstar has introduced a vegan range, I think it will change the way people travel,” Anna says. Catriona Larritt, Chief Commercial Officer at Jetstar Airways said the menu changes are a result of Jetstar responding to customer requests. “The feedback we were getting is that it can sometimes be hard to find vegan-friendly options while travelling,” Catriona says.
118-121_ESSENTIALS_JETSTAR NEWS.indd 118
“Research has demonstrated that ‘vegan’ was Googled more in Australia and New Zealand than anywhere else around the world. It’s obviously of growing interest to our local customer base and we wanted to respond to these insights.” The new vegan menu launched across the international network from 1 December last year, and will roll out across the domestic and trans-Tasman routes from 1 February. See your menu in the back of seat pockets for full range.

WALK THIS WAY A West Australian hiking program connecting refugee and migrant youths with the Australian bush is the latest recipient of a Jetstar Flying Start Grant in Australia. The First Hike Project has been given the opportunity to expand its refugee hiking program through the grant, which is made up of $15,000 cash and $15,000 in flights. This will assist the Perth-based program to cover the expenses and flights associated with taking refugee youths aged between 15 and 24 on hikes in the Australian bushland. In addition, it will aid plans to establish new branches in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Perth local, Neil McCulloch, founded the First Hike Project in 2015 after realising there were many refugee and migrant youths in his local area who were struggling to connect with the Australian community. “The personal development of refugee and migrant young people is the First Hike Project’s key goal. The Jetstar Flying Start grant will give us the opportunity to expand our program, allowing us to reach and impact the lives of more young refugees and migrants in 2018,” Neil says.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE? If you are part of a not-for-profit community group or organisation that could benefit from a Flying Start grant, visit Jetstar.com to find out more and apply.
Congrats! Congratulations to Christine from Elwood, Victoria, who is the winner of our fourth on-board gift card promotion. Christine was travelling from Queensland to Melbourne when she purchased the card. She was able to choose between one million Qantas points or a car and has decided to take the new wheels. A big congratulations from all of us at Jetstar.

IN OUR MODERN day lives, as well as improving our IQ through further education, we also are encouraged to develop our emotional intelligence, or more fancily, our EQ. The School of Life is a global organisation dedicated to exactly that. Founded by philosopher and author Alain de Botton in London in 2008, it applies philosophy, psychology and culture to everyday life – offering a variety of programmes and services concerned with how to live wisely and well. TSOL now has twelve branches around the world, including in Sydney and Melbourne. As well as offering classes, workshops and intensives, TSOL Australia has hosted
events with some of the world’s most interesting thinkers including Brené Brown, Peter Singer, Dan Ariely, Roman Krznaric, AC Grayling and Krista Tippett. This month, The School of Life Australia has released an entirely new curriculum of twelve new classes and four oneday workshops focusing on four key areas of life: love; work; self and others; and culture and meaning.

Life at Jetstar WORKING AT JETSTAR is quite a ride. You’ll be supported to develop and explore, and your work will connect people and enrich lives. We can’t promise there won’t be challenges, but that’s what adventure is all about. The satisfaction and sense of achievement makes for an amazing career. But don’t just take our word for it. We talked to team members from across Australia and New Zealand about their Jetstar adventures. Read Guy Griffiths’ story below, or see Life at Jetstar: Jetstar.com/au/en/careers/life-at-jetstar
Jetstar surveyed its staff and customers to find the top “travel hacks” to help make preparing for a trip a breeze. From packing clothes to storing shoes, Jetstar uncovered a collection of clever ways to save time and space when packing. Did you know that rolling your clothes made the most of the of room in your suitcase, or that placing a belt in your shirt collar helped hold its shape? For more great tips and tricks visit the Jetstar Australia Facebook page.
GUY GRIFFITHS Job Title: Star Development Manager | Age: 29 | No. of years at Jetstar: 10+ | Location: Melbourne Airport How did you end up at Jetstar? I was previously with Qantas ground staff in Darwin and heard Jetstar was looking for cabin crew for new international routes ... so I applied. What roles have you held at Jetstar? I started as cabin crew, then became an in-flight trainer, then cabin manager, customer service instructor and now ‘Star Development Manager’. I have progressed into a higher role every two years. Describe a typical day: First a healthy breakfast and good
118-121_ESSENTIALS_JETSTAR NEWS.indd 120
coffee while the sun is still rising, then I head to work, complete my team briefing and other admin, welcome our passengers on board and set out for a day of flying across Australia and internationally. Greatest challenge? Not letting my own fears of failure get in the way of my success within the business and believing that it’s okay to push yourself to the best you can be. What do you love about aviation? It’s forever changing, consistently interesting and still has a massive
influence on people’s lives. It’s amazing to be a part of something so special. Career highlight so far? Being a part of the introduction of the 787-8 Dreamliner into Jetstar; being selected for flight testing for on-board safety procedures; and brand-ambassador work throughout the network. I’ll also be a part of the Midsumma Carnival for the third year running this month. It’s a day to “just be you”, a day to smile, laugh and be proud. Jetstar gets behind that message and will be increasing its support this year, so watch this space.

n Cambodia’s Battambang Province, 12-year-old Ya Nuch spends her days studying, reading and playing with friends – simple pleasures her older siblings went without. Her parents live on a rice paddy. Their yield isn’t high and neither is the market price for rice. “My two sons and daughter dropped out of school because I could not afford for them to attend high school,” says their mother Sokh. All three children stopped at grade nine. The eldest son helped his parents sell crickets, fish and shrimp to
$9,524,857 field workers several kilometres from home, where they’d have to stay overnight. “Sometimes we were really afraid of snakes; my neighbour died because of getting a snake bite,” says Sokh. They saved for a passport and travel costs so their eldest could do migrant work in Thailand. But he was mistreated and returned. With StarKids’ support, World Vision started working with the community in 2013 to help improve livelihoods, education and awareness of child rights. Ya Nuch’s family received two pigs and
a dozen chickens. They now earn US$240 every three months by selling the animals’ offspring. Sokh also attends World Vision training on parenting and school enrolment. She’s even made their yard available for a kids’ club, where around 40 children come to play, read and learn about hygiene, safety and education. “Her family is a model family in the community,” says World Vision worker Vat Kanika. Ya Nuch’s siblings are now adults. But Ya Nuch has the opportunity to regularly attend school and make the most of her education.
You can help! MAKE YOUR DESTINATION A BETTER PLACE FOR CHILDREN Through StarKids, Jetstar and World Vision Australia are partnering to improve the lives of children and communities in need. Your donations to StarKids help support communitybased development projects across South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. These projects cover a range of activities including education and leadership development in Australia and New Zealand, child protection in Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, improving health in Indonesia, and increasing incomes in Cambodia. By supporting StarKids, you can help transform communities living in poverty and give children a brighter future. A proportion of inflight donations are used to pay for their collation and transfer to World Vision Australia. Donate your loose change on-board today, when booking your next flight with Jetstar, or online at STARKIDS.JETSTAR.COM where you’ll find more information. Backpage I TRAVEL TALES
Call of the cassowary On a mission at Mission Beach WORDS ANGELA SAURINE
152_BACKPAGE_TRAVEL TALES.indd 152
What’s for lunch?
Sit still, have a picnic and wait for them as we headed into the rainforest. But as we progressed, the path got muddier and muddier. We didn’t think about the previous 10 days of rain and could have worn more appropriate footwear than thongs. We heard the call of birds, then realised we had no idea what cassowaries actually sounded like. But there
were other positive signs, including cassowary footprints and droppings. Suddenly I heard, “Uh oh!” up ahead. “It can’t get any worse,” I muttered. I was wrong. The path before us was flooded. I took my shoes off and and it was strangely liberating to feel the mud squishing between my toes – until I stepped on a sharp twig. But the cassowaries remained elusive. That afternoon we headed to Beachcomber Coconut Holiday Park. “We’ve seen them the last two days in
a row,” a holidaymaker says, encouragingly. After an hour’s wait, we gave up and headed to the tip. That was the low point. Finally, on our last morning, we were driving along Garners Beach Road when my companion screamed “Yes! Yes! Yes!” and pointed excitedly at the road in front. Sure enough, there were two tall, beautiful cassowaries. As we scrambled for our cameras they wandered into the bushes, as oblivious to our presence as we were enraptured by theirs.

WE WERE determined to see cassowaries on the Cassowary Coast. Sightings of the big, brightly coloured birds are common around Mission Beach, a twohour drive south of Cairns, and everyone we met had an opinion on the best place to spot them. “Outside Mitre 10,” one person swears. “The caravan park,” another says. “The tip,” yet another offers. Cassowary crusader Liz Gallie, who founded the Mission Beach Cassowary Facebook Group for people to share sightings of the birds, offers some advice. “Don’t chase them,” she says. “Sit still, have a picnic and wait for them.” Of course, we’re too impatient for that. After hearing that a pair had been spied near Lacey Creek, just south of town, we headed in that direction. We parked beside a road worker on El Arish Mission Beach Road. He was part of a gang widening the road to prevent cassowaries being hit by passing cars so we asked the odds of seeing one if we sat and waited. “You might be waiting a couple of days,” he says. So, we set off on the Dreaming Trail walking track. It started innocently enough,
