O

ver my five years with Jetstar I’ve heard so many great travel stories. I’ve heard from first-time travellers awed by the experience, young families thankful for the support, other families finally able to reunite, and adventure seekers collecting the most extraordinary life experiences. And of course, the small business owners growing with Jetstar. But there’s one story that, for me, defines what Jetstar is all about. Back in 2012 we were welcoming our 100 millionth customer – the Wade family – who would make this milestone official when they boarded their Melbourne to Gold Coast flight. To celebrate the occasion, we presented the Wades with a flight voucher that gave them free travel on the entire Jetstar network for the year, including accommodation. As I spoke to the Wades about where they would like to go using the voucher, it dawned on me

just how special the year ahead would be for them. A young family, who had never had the opportunity to fly before, were going to be able to travel not just anywhere around Australia, but to Hawaii, Singapore, Tokyo, Phuket and Queenstown. It was a life-changing opportunity for all of them, and I was so proud to be part of this moment. Everyone at Jetstar looks forward to seeing what the clever and inquisitive Wade children do with their newfound curiosity about the world around them. Giving people more opportunities to travel is at the core of what we do at Jetstar. With over 24 million flights sold last year for under $100, we’ve helped make travel much more accessible for so many people. We are committed to setting the standard for everyday low fares, fun travel and great value across our extensive network. Thank you for choosing Jetstar and I wish you safe and happy travels.

INTERVIEW

Q&A with James Tobin INTERVIEW JUSTINE COSTIGAN

my perfect holiday involves eating and drinking all the local specialties, clocking up the kilometres either walking or riding and finding the spots where the locals hang. I recently became the ambassador for Lord Howe Island and part of the attraction of Lord Howe is just how much there is to do there. World-class fishing, scuba diving on the reef, incredible beaches, subtropical forests, hiking up Mount Gower, handfeeding fish on Ned’s Beach, or exploring the hidden pockets by bike.

Welcome

Dean Salter, CEO Jetstar Australia and New Zealand

Weekend Sunrise weather presenter James Tobin has reported from all over Australia and the Q: Have you reported world. We talked to him on the weather from any about life on the road. unusual places? Q: What’s a typical work day for you?

As the weather presenter I’m effectively the Weekend Sunrise travelling gypsy, and I love it. Every Friday I pack a bag and head off somewhere around Australia.

Q: When did the travel bug first bite? For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved travelling. Seeing somewhere different, having new experiences and meeting new people are all part of what makes travel so wonderful.

Q: What have been some of your favourite travel destinations?

Heading overseas is great, but as Australians I reckon we’ve got the best country in the world right here as our own back yard. The great privilege of my job is that I get to experience so much of it, and I hope that my travels encourage people to see more of this great country.

Q: Describe your perfect holiday.

Little stars

10-13_EXPERIENCE_NEWS_OCT.indd 10

I love exploring and packing it all in. I’m not very good at lying on a sunbed all day, every day. I’d rather be active. Regardless of where I am,

The more unusual the better! We proved weather presenters can talk underwater when I read the weather while scuba diving in a shark tank. We’ve done it skydiving, zip lining, and rally-car driving.

Q: Has it ever gone badly wrong? I remember we did a weekend from Samoa. I was paddling a very small canoe with the newly crowned Miss Samoa sitting in front of me in a beautiful dress with full hair and make up, singing a national song. Just as they were about to cross live to us we had drifted a little too far so I gave one big pull on the paddle ... and in doing so put us off kilter and we both went in. On camera, her beautiful siren song turned into a gurgling sound, and we both came to the surface like drowned rats. I felt terrible for her, but at least the hosts found it hilarious, and she was a great sport about it.

Q: Where are you headed next?

No idea, but I’m looking forward to it! Catch James on Weekend Sunrise, Channel 7.

Thanks for choosing to fly with us today – it’s great to have you on board. We’re marking a special anniversary at Jetstar this year. Ten years ago we started our StarKids partnership with World Vision to give back to the destinations in our network. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised $9.3 million in the past decade, a life-changing result. Turn to page 132 to read about the difference our customers have made to more than 1.2 million people in 10 countries. I encourage you to donate any small change you have on board today when our crew makes their way through the cabin with the StarKids envelope – every cent really counts toward making a world of difference to those in need. Tarnanthi, the Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, brings together the work of more than 1000 First Nations artists in one of the country’s biggest Indigenous arts events. Kicking off with a citywide festival from 13 to 22 October, Tarnanthi will take its place at the Art Gallery of South Australia as a major exhibition until 28 January 2018.

This has been a big year for the Australian cellar-door scene. Notable openings have included CRFT Wines in the Adelaide Hills, Robert Oatley in Margaret River and the new-look Scotchmans Hill in Drysdale, Victoria. This month, Point Leo Estate in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula opens the doors to a state-of-the-art winery, sculpture garden and restaurant headed by Phil Wood, and Barossa winery Elderton Wines unveils the new incarnation of the historic family homestead, with private tasting and dining rooms, a heli pad and pool. Before the end of the year the revamp of the iconic Mitchelton Wines in Victoria’s Nagambie will be complete – including a 60-room boutique hotel – and the hotly anticipated d’Arenberg Cube in Willunga, South Australia, will start welcoming summer sippers. Barbecue Aussie -style Navigate the most sacred Australian ritual with these handy tips WORDS PETER BARRETT

1. Keeper of the tongs Also known as the Tongmaster, this role falls to the host, who must wield his* sacred implement one-handed while holding a beer with the other. The Keeper may bestow the tongs on another only in extreme circumstances, including death, unconsciousness, both arms falling off or an urgent toilet break.

18-19_EXPERIENCE_HOW TO.indd 18

2. BYO (Bring Your Own) As a guest you will be required to bring something, even if only as a token offering. Alcohol, salad, frisbee, footy, deckchairs or meats are all acceptable. Note, however, all prime cuts are reserved for the Tongmaster and his or her band of merry disciples (i.e. other men standing around watching).

3. Hipster barbecues A relatively new phenomenon, hipster barbecues can be identified by any of the following: brisket, smoking (meat, not cigarettes) and pulledpork sliders. In most cases guests are expected to eat beforehand due to the ‘low and slow’ 12-hour cooking process. This invariably results in lunch being ready at about 3am the next morning.

4. Vegetarianism Less controversial in today’s enlightened age, vegetarians (AKA ‘veggos’) are still advised to observe certain behaviours to

ustralian barbecues have come a long way since the 1980s. I still remember the pile of bricks my bearded, pipe-smoking dad used to set up at the end of the garden. His art was to apply so much heat to the snags that they audibly snapped in your fingers. TV cooking shows, better health awareness and up-sized barbecue designs have changed the scene in many ways. But one challenge remains: navigating the complex social dance that goes on around the backyard barbie.

The Keeper of the tongs

The Keeper may bestow the tongs on another ensure smooth social lubrication. First, allow the Tongmaster to feign bafflement at how to cook your tofu/eggplant/ tempeh patty (they know well enough). Second, be prepared to feign laughter at ‘veggo’ jokes (Q: How do you know if someone’s a vegan? A: Don’t worry, they’ll tell you!)

19

5. Children While children are common at most Australian barbecues, interaction with adults is usually restricted to losing at backyard cricket and at ‘diving comps’ in the pool. Disciplining the children of others is encouraged, except in the case where the mother is a character played by the actress Melissa George.**

6. Cleaning A job left entirely to the host/Keeper of the tongs, this involves leaving the barbecue on “to burn the bits off for a while” and results in the gas bottle running out because they forgot to turn it off. * While Keepers are often men, Tongmistresses are on the rise. ** See The Slap series based on the Christos Tsiolkas novel.

THREE TO TRY

NATURAL WINE HAS TAKEN OVER DRINKS MENUS AT BARS AND RESTAURANTS. BUT, JUST BECAUSE IT’S TRENDING DOESN’T MEAN IT’S NEW – OR THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS IT WORDS SOFIA LEVIN

FOR WINE to end up in your glass two things must happen: grapes need to be grown and then those grapes have to be made into wine. ‘Natural wine’ is a loose term at best – not all organic and biodynamic wines are natural, and it’s conceivable to use natural winemaking processes on conventional grapes. According to Aaron Fenwick, co-owner of The Summertown Aristologist natural wine bar in the Adelaide Hills, everyone’s definition differs slightly. “It hasn’t been legally defined, but I think natural wines are made from grapes that have been grown organically or biodynamically and are made with no additions or subtractions,” he

20-21_EXPERIENCE_IMBIBE.indd 20

go au naturel next time you wine and dine says. A small amount of sulphur is also generally acceptable. After discovering that natural wines pair wonderfully with food, sommeliers began adding them to wine lists. A trickle-down effect followed, but natural wine is nothing new. “There are people in Georgia who have been making it for 8000 years,” Aaron says. Lou Chalmer, who owns Clever Polly’s in Melbourne and makes natural wine, points out that chemicals and largescale processes have only

dominated winemaking since the Industrial Revolution. Now a new generation of winemakers is moving away from mass production and reconnecting with the land. “It’s also been really interesting over the past few years to see how some of the older winemakers are getting on board,” Lou says. Lou and Aaron believe that natural wine’s popularity has been propelled by people becoming more conscious of what they put in their bodies. In Australia, it’s very much in its infancy, so whether you care for the environment or are avoiding chemicals and – apparently – a hangover, go au naturel next time you wine and dine.

Smallfry El Grande A structured, powerful shiraz with a fresh lift from some of the Barossa Valley’s oldest vines.

Experience I FOOD ICON

A

of history

Australia may be universally known for its meat pie, but Tasmania can boast an iconic pastry of its own WORDS MICHELLE CRAWFORD

22

O

nce a cheap meal for hungry fishermen, the scallop pie is a bundle of buttery pastry filled with Tassie scallops in a creamy sauce with just enough curry to tickle your tongue. To the uninitiated, it might sound like a oneway ticket to Wrongtown. But like many iconic foods with a sense of

22-23_EXPERIENCE_FOOD ICON.indd 22

place, you need a side order of history to truly understand the merits of the scallop pie. When the English arrived in the 1800s, Tasmania’s pristine waters were teeming with scallops. So abundant were the little molluscs that by the early 20th century they were sold for a shilling a bucket. Even jam tycoon Henry Jones of IXL fame had a profitable

they’re like a big Tasmanian hug for your insides

sideline exporting canned scallops. By the 1920s, the Hobart waterfront was bustling with not only fishing boats, but commodities such as apples and timber were also loaded onto ships and sailed up to Sydney for export. Meanwhile, a few miles south of Hobart, young British immigrant Joseph Keen was developing a special blend of curry

powder. Now famously known as Keen’s Curry, 100 years later it’s still available in its little orange tin. After Joseph passed away, son-in-law Horace took over and daringly transformed a steep parcel of land on the foothills of Hobart’s Mount Wellington into a massive advertising sign. With large stones painted white, Horace formed

22-23_EXPERIENCE_FOOD ICON.indd 23

the words ‘Keen’s Curry’ in 15-metre high letters. Still there today, it’s not quite the Hollywood sign, but a much-loved Hobart icon that’s listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. Starting to get the picture? Plentiful scallops on the waterfront, a massive sign advertising locally made curry powder overlooking the city, and hundreds of apple-cheeked fishermen and wharfies in woolly jumpers needing to be fed. It was only a matter of time before the three of them got together to create a culinary icon. Legend has it that local fishermen would cook their daily catch of scallops in cast-iron pots over fires right on the waterfront using a pinch of Keen’s Curry Powder. It was only a short culinary leap to stuff them into pastry so fishermen could eat with one hand and hoist the

mainsail with the other. Purists will argue the finer points of a true scallop pie, but some basic rules apply; a minimum of four scallops, the roe must be left on, and Keen’s Curry Powder should be used, but not overpower the meaty scallop flavour. Like all good pies, ultimately it’s only as good as the pastry: flaky, yet sturdy, and not too rich. Hopefully we won’t be seeing scallop pies in finedining establishments anytime soon, and they’ll remain working-class fare that’s a reminder of Hobart’s colourful maritime history. This is why to truly appreciate a scallop pie, they’re best eaten at the source: outside on a chilly Tassie morning near the waterfront. They’re rich, they’re creamy and with the lingering warmth of curry powder, they’re like a big Tasmanian hug for your insides.

life is made up of a series of big and small milestones crisis notwithstanding, finding, applying and moving into your own flat or share house is a crucial moment in a young man’s journey. There are bills to pay late, never-

ending piles of dishes to studiously ignore and, on the plus side, endless hours available to play multiplayer online games. Third, there’s romance. You find yourself moving in with your partner, shopping for groceries together and spending evenings binge-watching Game Of Thrones. Farremoved from those wine-fuelled moonlit

flings of the past, this thing suddenly feels more than the sum of its parts. That’s because it marks another significant bridge into manhood: the serious relationship. Finally, there’s starting a family of your own, but you don’t really need one of those to prove you’re a man. The only one true test of manhood comes from IKEA, and it’s flatpacked.

THEY’RE CALLED rites of passage because there’s always more than one. In fact, if you’re a man, you’ll know that life is made up of a series of big and small milestones, from beating your dad at tennis to maybe even becoming a dad yourself (also known as getting beaten at your own game). But along the way, certain events blaze particular truth, like bloke-shaped welcometo-manhood beacons. First, there’s the young man’s road trip. Involving cars, mates, vast distances and at least one dummyspit, this rite of passage is all about the feeling you get as you look, with high school dissolving behind you, into the dazzling but opaque eye of possibility. It’s the feeling of freedom. For mine, I travelled with three friends (one named Dodge) in two cars from Melbourne to Queensland’s Fraser Island and back. Along the way we met a wealthy cattle owner who cut barbecued sausages open and smeared the insides with butter before eating them. Mind blown? Heck yeah. SYDNEY STYLIST Jason Grant’s third book overflows with beautiful homes where the old and new coexist seamlessly. How do you categorise ‘Modern retro’? “It’s basically the link between all the homes that we shot. I’ve always enjoyed mixing old and new, and a lot of contemporary homes in Australia mix modern and retro; it has kind of become a bit of an Australian style.” What are your tips for sourcing retro? “I’m a really big fan of garage sales, op shops, vintage stores, markets, auctions – sometimes it’s just a case of digging deep and finding that ‘thing’. Vintage does get expensive, but (I love) the treasure hunting and those lucky finds. I enjoy that thrill of the chase.”

any things about international travel can be confronting: foreign languages, unfamiliar traditions and new customs, to name a few. At SpaWorld I experienced all of these with one added, awkward factor – I was naked. SpaWorld, in Osaka, Japan, is a collection of sento (communal baths) designed to mimic famous locations around the world. Split into two levels, one Asian and one European, genders rotate between the two ‘continents’ each month – women experience the Asian baths while the males enjoy a European experience, then vice versa.

42-45_EXPERIENCE_SPA.indd 43

Situated within a larger hotel, SpaWorld is in an uninspiring high-rise in downtown Osaka. Though the clerk at the entrance helpfully highlights the correct floor, I’m still worried. As someone who can’t speak or read Japanese, my greatest fear is that I’ll somehow stumble into the wrong set of sento and find myself surrounded by hordes of naked, bathing men. Nevertheless, I know I’ve found the right floor, where I’ll be experiencing the European zone, when I see fellow females. I’ve passed the first hurdle. I find myself upstairs in a large, carpeted locker room. I strip down to my bikini, but I’m unsure where to go next. There’s

It’s unclear when exactly I’m supposed to de-clothe

an attendant but she’s, unsurprisingly, fully clothed. It’s unclear when exactly I’m supposed to de-clothe. There doesn’t appear to be any baths in sight, only a long, deserted hallway that may or may not lead to the spa section of SpaWorld. All of the articles that I’ve read in preparation

When my bikini is finally stored and I’m submerged in a sento, I begin to appreciate the grandiose aspirations of SpaWorld. Each bath is modelled around famous European locations – past, present and even fictional. While the ancient Rome and Atlantis rooms are little more than a large bath with a faux-marble fountain, the Finnish and Greek sections more than live up to their names, complete with salt saunas, wooden bathtubs and a blue grotto. Whether it’s the total lack of attention I’ve received from fellow bathers, or the relaxing hot water, I’m soon hopping from one country to another, with no concern about being sans-clothes. By the end of the day, I’ve even left behind my modesty towel. It’s what the locals

Each bath is modelled around famous European locations – past, present and even fictional are doing, and, as they say, “when in Rome” (in this case, almost literally). SpaWorld isn’t as relaxing as traditional onsen and its décor is definitely kitsch rather than classic, but it’s certainly an eye-opening experience for a foreign visitor and a fun way to join in Japanese customs without hordes of other tourists. Though initially the thought of baring all seemed daunting, after seeing local women (and a few other daring foreigners) enjoy communal bathing like

any other social outing, I did start to wonder if perhaps it’s time for Westerners to become a bit more relaxed and give communal bathing a go too. SpaWorld is at 3-4, 24 Ebisu-higashi Naniwa-ku, Osaka, Japan. spaworld.co.jp/english

flash through my mind – for many Japanese, communal bathing is an important part of daily life with many traditions and rules. While I know that one must bathe naked, I also don’t want to accidentally stumble naked into a room of fully clothed locals. Trying for a compromise, I decide to locate the spas with my bikini on, with the intention of leaving them next to the first spa. Wrong. Almost immediately after I’ve discarded my bikini and start to enter the water, a clearly frustrated attendant gestures furiously that I have to return all my belongings to my locker before I can start bathing. My attempt at modesty has meant not one, but two long walks in my birthday suit, with the added bonus of now being distinctly soggy.

alking with Maeve O’Meara is enough to make you hungry. The respected food presenter and author bubbles with enthusiasm when discussing culinary finds – from complex dishes at rarified fine-dining establishments to family recipes discovered in suburban backyards. “I’m just so blessed to have access to some of the top chefs of Australia, and some really inspiring home cooks as well – each day is an absolute joy,” Maeve says. At the helm of the longrunning Food Safari TV series, Maeve has shone a light on the diversity of Australia’s food culture. Coming from a journalism background, she was inspired to move into food while working on currentaffair show Dateline and encountering a more multicultural side of the country. “To find this extraordinary food culture – where people all came from so many different backgrounds – that was the lightbulb moment,” Maeve says. “I grew up on good, plain food ... I’d always wanted to be part of a more delicious, exotic world. We would be such a boring food country without the wealth of food knowledge that’s come to our shores.”

I’m just glad it makes interesting television This month, Maeve returns with Food Safari Earth, focusing on vegetables, fruits, herbs, grains, pulses and flowers. The 13-part series unveils the huge versatility of food from the earth, exploring how high-profile chefs are redefining the limits of vegetarian cooking, and how other cultures have been doing it for generations. Throughout the series, Maeve meets pros such as Peter Gilmore, Danielle Alvarez and Andrew McConnell, and is welcomed into home gardens and kitchens around the country. “It’s that insider knowledge that I just have so much respect for,” Maeve says. “It’s such a rich world for me to be swimming amongst ... I’m just glad it makes interesting television because I’d probably be doing this anyway!” Find Food Safari Earth on SBS at 8.00pm on Thursdays from 12 October.

The acidulated water prevents the artichokes from browning. • Shell the peas and double pod the broad beans. Cut the lettuce into thin wedges from top to bottom. • Heat the olive oil in a medium frying pan over low heat. Lightly fry the spring onion, garlic and chilli until softened. Drain the artichokes well, then add them to the pan, along with the broad beans and peas, and add enough water to just cover. Once the water comes to the boil, add a couple of good pinches of salt and the green beans. Boil for another 6-8 minutes. Add the asparagus, chard and lettuce wedges. Stir well and simmer for 15 minutes or until the lettuce is tender. If the water has evaporated too much, add a little more. There should be 2-3 tablespoons of flavoursome juice when finished. It shouldn’t be watery. • Check the seasoning, adding some pepper. Transfer to a

Planet Australian entrepreneurs are putting the environment at the heart of their businesses WORDS PETER BARRETT

A 48

t a time when some nations are sending confusing messages about climate change and the environment, some small businesses are bypassing politics and quietly getting on with the job of saving the planet. These profit-making operations are putting positive environmental outcomes at the heart of their business model, which means success is measured in common sense as well as dollars and cents. Here are three of Australia’s best.

Reground Ever wondered what happens to all those spent coffee grounds left over from your daily latte, flat white or long black? Ninna Larsen has. Born and raised in Denmark, where families are used to separating household rubbish into no less than eight different recycling bins, she founded her company in late 2014. Reground collects used coffee grounds from cafés throughout Melbourne and diverts them away from landfill so they can be used for growing food. With a tertiary

success is measured in common sense as well as dollars background in design, culture and economics, Ninna first had the idea while working in a café in Brunswick East. “I was throwing all these coffee grounds in the general waste bin and, going back to my roots of separating waste, I saw an opportunity.” It turns out coffee grounds are high in nitrogen and potassium, chemical elements that make them excellent in gardens, worm farms and

48-49_EXPERIENCE_WORK AND PLAY.indd 48

for growing mushrooms. Today, Ninna’s business employs four people and diverts 2.4 tonnes of coffee grounds from landfill each week. She firmly believes everyone, including businesses, has a responsibility to care for the planet. “Because the planet is what gives us our home, it’s where we live. If (you) treat it like rubbish then you’re not doing your job as a business or an individual.”

Natural Evolution Foods Seven years ago, Queensland banana growers Krista and Robert Watkins were throwing out five tonnes of bananas each week. These were the rejects: bananas deemed too straight, the wrong size or the wrong look by the big supermarkets. Then everything changed. Krista recalls Robert coming home excited one day after accidentally backing over a bunch of green bananas in his forklift. He said they tasted

like flour. “I thought he had absolutely lost his mind,” Krista says, laughing. Fastforward to today and pioneering company Natural Evolution Foods is producing a tonne of banana flour a day at its environmentally award-winning plant in Walkamin, 1.5 hours west of Cairns. Rich in nutrients, vitamins and fibre but, importantly, low in gluten, the flour is popular with bakers and is also used to make health and beauty products. Since starting

the business, the couple has given up growing bananas themselves but estimate they have saved 900 tonnes of fruit from landfill last year alone. “It’s just been an epic journey of accidentally driving over a banana to dust and going ahead and forging a health food company. It’s been incredible.”

Graham Ross had the idea for his sustainable sportswear brand after running his first marathon on the Great Wall Of China in 2010. The former TV producer and his friend, co-founder Matthew Ashcroft, noticed that the promotional T-shirts given to competitors were ill-fitting and uncomfortable. He set about researching the impact of discarded clothes on the planet and realised there was an opportunity in

the environmentallyfriendly, activewear market. But a suitable material didn’t exist. They spent the following years researching fabric laboratories and factories around the world until they came up with ECOLITE®, a biodegradable blend of 100 per cent plant-based products that they claim use only one per cent of the water it takes to make a cotton T-shirt. Since launching online last December, Kusaga has developed a range of other activewear, including a degradable polyester running shirt. “At the end of the day I didn’t start this company to sell T-shirts, I actually started it to make a difference,” Graham says. “T-shirts are just part of the journey.” In fact, Graham hopes his Sydney-based company will one day resemble environmentally-friendly outdoor company Patagonia. “I’d like us to be the future textile company, so we’re ethically, sustainably and environmentally conscious and active.”

especially intrigued by remote Arnhem Land, so she was thrilled when the Yolngu people offered her the chance to visit. Spending a week living in the Nyinyikay and Bawaka homelands, she discovered a vibrant and open community. “On the homelands the Yolngu live their traditional lives. They live connected to their ancestral country, with their families, their sacred sites, their stories, their ceremonies – with everything that is of utmost importance to them,” she says. “They are warm, joyful, welcoming and so proud to share their home, stories and culture with visitors.”

52-61_EXPLORE_ARNHEM LAND_MILLIE BROWN.indd 60

Against the striking backdrop of the Top End, Millie’s portraits captured the peaceful rhythms of “Yolngu time”. “On their country you are not being dictated to by the hands of a clock. Life is slower, which I found wonderful.” The Yolngu people were among the first to make a stand for Aboriginal land rights, presenting the famous Yirrkala bark petitions, written in both Yolngu Matha and English, to Federal Parliament in 1963. Today, the title rights they fought for allow them to act as custodians of one of the oldest living cultures in the world, stretching back at least 65,000 years.

Millie Brown has been sent out on the road for a host of high-profile travel magazines. She is currently a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize for her portrait of Yolngu boy Peter, titled A moment. milliebrown.com.au

ustralian-born Millie Brown first found her passion for travel photography while living in Europe, inspired by the culture and street life. “I knew early on in my studies that I wanted a career in travel photography, and I’ve never wavered from that,” she says. “Travel is and always has been a huge part of my life, and it’s a privilege to be able to travel with my camera and photograph what I love: people, life and places.” On returning to Australia, Millie set out to learn more about the place of her birth. “I wanted to discover my own country, to learn more about its ancient history and its First Peoples,” she says. Over several trips to the Northern Territory, Millie had been struck by its individuality. “The Top End of Australia is unique; there is a vibe about it that is so very different from the southern states of Australia. The locals all seem larger than life, the outback is mystical, huge, and spectacular – it’s like nothing else I have ever experienced,” she says. Millie had always been

“Perth is on the up again now,” says Andy Freeman, owner of a trio of Perth’s coolest bars. His newest, a tequila haven named Caballitos, opened in August, signalling his belief that the good times will continue to roll in WA. “At my end of town, there’s a lot happening. There’s the Raine Square shopping hub, then Yagan Square should come on line in February, there’s the new King Square precinct. Where we’re sitting on Queen Street, we’re in the nucleus of what’s hopefully a new bubble.” Having nailed gin at The Flour Factory and perfected American whiskey at Varnish on King, Andy wants to do something different at Caballitos, and not just with its 200-strong line-up of tequila and mezcal styles. “There’s

a lot of swizzling and stirring, and waxed moustaches and vests already,” he says. “We’re just trying to bring some fun back. You’ll be able to have a dance and a cocktail with a five-star experience in a classy and safe environment,

and naturally tequila is the fuel required to create that festive energy.”

Perth’s extreme makeover continues at pace in the Wild West, with the capital switching from dull urban wilderness to thriving metropolitan core in just a handful of years. Cue cheers and applause. Now enjoying a flashy new waterfront called Elizabeth Quay, a game-changing restored heritage precinct christened Cathedral Square, and a revitalised, street-art sprayed Chinatown, Perth’s key redevelopments are starting to gear up on the northern side of the CBD. New pedestrian zones, shiny shopping laneways and earthy market squares will soon cover the spaces unlocked by sinking Perth’s central train lines and relocating its major bus station underground. Even several tumbles in the all-important iron ore price since March this year – a barometer that affects WA’s psyche as much as its purse – have barely swayed progress. While the stream of small bar and restaurant openings has slowed, and retail, like everywhere, is in the doldrums, the city’s big-picture evolution is steaming ahead.

But even it will get a boost when the neighbouring Perth Stadium – WA’s new home of the AFL – opens with an Ed Sheeran concert in March next year. Little else is predictable: there’s a dress code, MasterChef alumnus Jessica Arnott is the head cheesemonger and some 40 cheeses are stored in the heritage building’s former bank vaults. “Artisanal cheeses are amazing; it’s a little bit of science, a bit of magic and a whole lot of alchemy,” says owner Danicia Quinlan. “We’re rethinking the way the city thinks about cheese.” Doing a cheese and

liquor flight is one way to immerse yourself, another might be to join the new Fromage Walking Tour. Run by popular Two Feet and a Heartbeat guides, it tours Fromage and two other cheesy destinations, weaving in history and a few mouldy blue jokes. If sunset cocktails are more your thing, hit up Ku De Ta, a sexy new barrestaurant perched on the Swan River from the same people behind its Bali namesake. Spread across three zones that do their best to cater to all moods, food-wise the slickest is Ku Dining – lash out and order the lacquered six-

There are 10 menu choices, all vamped up with cheffy touches and tweezer placement, care of another MasterChef contestant, Karmen Lu. Dessert degustations are recommended only for the most decadent sweet tooths. If there’s fuel left in the tank, hop back to the city centre and blitz Alfred’s Pizzeria, Joe’s Juice Joint and Halford. They’re all hard-to-find, worth-theeffort basement bars that are best visited on the late shift. Replete with good tunes and polished drinks, they slot neatly into Perth’s new wave of intimate, idiosyncratic small bars.

While you’re on the strip, retail-recover with the finest gelato this side of the Nullarbor at Chicho – ask for a choc-filled cone.

For less local charm and more luxe, head to King Street, Perth’s most expensive shopping strip. Gaze through the glass at Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Chanel, or head to Zomp, a cult shoe store with amazing sales, at the quieter northern end. Further on, Highs and Lows aces streetwear.

THE TWO HALVES of Perth’s inner city will be reunited for the first time in a century when Yagan Square opens early next year. In keeping with the land’s heritage as a meeting place for local Aboriginal tribes, the wide, open pedestrian zone will incorporate Indigenous culture through a bustling market hall, native wildflower gardens and a wrap-around screen projecting the story of the fabled warrior, Yagan. Turning towards Perth’s glittering coastline, the $100-million redevelopment of Scarborough’s beachfront, also pegged for completion in 2018, will see a beachside swimming pool, chic communal zones and several bars and cafés added to the 1.6-kilometre stretch of sand. WA’s other big-ticket opening, the New Museum is expected to place the state’s natural history and civic culture in an arresting past-meetsfuture construction that’s four times larger than the original museum. Part of the Perth Cultural Centre – a cluster of the state and contemporary art galleries, pod cafés and the urban orchard – it’s due to open in 2020.

Perth seems to have a thing for unhotel-like hotels, if the latest spate of openings is anything to go by. Modular-stacked Tribe Hotel has no mini bar, no bible in the drawer and no password on its wi-fi, but it does have a stunning lounge-lobby of designer armchairs, curated hardcovers and neon lights that flows into a slick bareatery. The focus is also on ‘social’ areas rather than rooms at Aloft Perth, which bucks trends further with a pet terrace (and pet snacks, too, on the restaurant menu) and wildly artsy furnishings. Another newbie, Peppers Kings Square, has an unconventional façade flashing with 50 metres of LED tube lighting, along with plush interiors, all located near Perth Arena and the new Kings Square development. And here’s a tip: Perth has never been more affordable with hotel rates falling at least 16 per cent in the past five years. Boomtown is now do-able on a budget.

s your car or chartered bus veers onto the tree-lined roads that wind into the picturesque Swan Valley, everything that you see or do from this point will warrant the smug Instagram hashtag #thisisthelife. Swan Valley is a mere 25-minute drive from Perth’s CBD and this modern-day utopia is ideal for a few hours of merry-making, or a weekend getaway. Enjoy a farm-totable meal, taste wines in a tranquil vineyard, indulge in a day-spa treatment, beat the post-lunch food coma with refreshing craft beers and ciders, play with adorable kangaroos … do a little of everything without doing anything much. Wine and dine (and take sunlit selfies) in an idyllic, picture-perfect ambience. The marketing folks didn’t dub it the “Valley of Taste” for nothing (it’s also sometimes known as Western Australia’s Hunter Valley). There are more than 150 dining and touring destinations over a 32km loop and more than 40 of them are worldclass wineries. Coincidentally, this is also the oldest wine region in Western Australia. The Swan Valley boasts more than 180 years of winemaking history that began in 1834 when the grapevines at Olive Farm, which still operates today, produced the region’s first wine. The Swan Valley’s reputation for great cellar doors is still going strong thanks to generous summer seasons that let grapes ripen at just the right leisurely pace to produce the sugar levels needed for rare liqueurs. Swan Valley varietals include sparkling wines, crisp and dry verdelho, intense chenin blanc, berry-and-spice petit verdot and the full-bodied shiraz.

70-75_EXPLORE_SWAN VALLEY.indd 72

Drink up The best way to get through wine country is to book a masterclass or tour: you might get to visit a private winery such as Upper Reach Winery or be a winemaker for a day at Sandalford Wines, a spacious estate founded in 1840. Most Swan Valley wineries have in-house dining options so you enjoy a signature pour alongside a meal made with the freshest produce. Boutique winery Mandoon Estate, which added 32 hotel rooms to its grounds this year, offers both degustation and a la carte menus. It has an underground

You’ll most likely lug home a bottle or two of the store’s addictive Sambarino chocolate liqueurs in flavours such as macchiato or after-dinner mint. Other Swan Valley thirstquenchers include craft beers and ciders. Wholesome dining It’s not just the drink manufacturers in the Swan Valley who put this much thought and effort into their craft. About 30 local cafés and restaurants serve menus featuring cage-free eggs and free-range chicken and pork. The Swan Valley was named the first Australian Humane Food Region by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in 2014. Many of the food businesses here are committed to ensuring that hens lay eggs in nests, pigs are not confined to stalls and crates, and chickens bred for meat are allowed to forage. The result is fresher, tastier and more wholesome food. Swan Valley Vegetarian Café uses local and organic produce, and whips up healthy and moreish vegetarian options such as buckwheat pancakes and pesto omelettes, best washed down with a steaming hot cup of turmeric

t’s a popular myth that it never gets cold in Perth. The myth is so entrenched, it’s perpetuated by Western Australians themselves, which means it comes as a surprise to us every year that winter actually exists, and we promptly go into hibernation. But, as the mercury starts creeping up again around this time of year, Sandgropers begin to venture outdoors and head in one direction – to the coast. Something that’s not a myth is that WA has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world along its 12,500 kilometres of coastline, with 19 of them in the

metro area. It’s also not a myth that Perth has more hours of sunshine each year than any other city in Australia (about 3200 hours, in case you were wondering). This gives Western Australians plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach under clear blue skies.

Sunny memories Like most West Aussies, a love of the beach is practically in my DNA. I have wonderful memories of spending school holidays with Grandpa, riding shotgun in his big, red, salt-encrusted LandCruiser to Port Beach at 6am each morning to swim with the Beach Bums – a Speedo-clad, sprightly group of

Grown-up beach days These days, Perth’s beach scene is more upmarket, with the iconic Cottesloe Beach Hotel (‘The Cott’) and the foreshore at Scarborough undergoing major revamps. Further south, Bathers Beach at Fremantle is now one of the only beaches in Australia where you can sit in a deckchair on the sand and summon a waiter to bring you a cocktail while you work on your tan.

But while Perth’s beach culture may be evolving, and jelly-tip ice-creams aren’t a thing anymore (except in NZ), there are some traditions that haven’t changed. Throwing down a towel to stake a claim on a patch of clean white sand, feeling the thrill of dipping a toe in the cold Indian Ocean, and watching the endless blue sky turn a vivid pink as the sun sinks below the horizon signalling the end of another perfect day in a place that winter never touches (or so we’ll tell you).

retirees. The highlight of those trips was stopping at the kiosk after our swim, sandy and dripping wet, for a chocolate jelly-tip ice-cream (with strict instructions not to tell Grandma I was having ice-cream for breakfast). When I was old enough to get my licence, the first thing I did with my new-found freedom was pick up my girlfriends and head to the beach. That summer was the best of my life – driving to Cottesloe to jump off the iconic bell, check out boys, play beach volleyball and eat fish and chips under the Norfolk pine trees, the screeching of the cockatoos high above, and the air heavy with the smell of salt and vinegar. As we got older, Scarborough was our beach of choice. With its outdoor pubs, it was the perfect place for Sunday sessions – a Strongbow cider in one hand and a kebab in the other.

Are Your Hormones Making You Fat?

FREE

Imagine waking up every morning to the sound of your alarm, excited and happy to be starting a new day. When you look in the mirror you admire your body. Everyone tells you how great you’re looking and asks what your secret is. Sound too good to be true? If you, like many other women, don’t feel this way, you may have a hormonal imbalance. Research has documented that over 40 per cent of women have an undiagnosed underactive thyroid gland. If you feel tired all the time, crave sugar, use alcohol and coffee to lift yourself, retain weight around your middle and feel the cold, you could be suffering from this problem.

THYROID SCREEN (Normally $140) For Jetstar Magazine Readers when you book a consultation

OFFER ENDS 31ST OCTOBER 2017 Are You Fed Up With... Weight Gain Around Middle? Feeling Tired Especially At 3PM? Feeling Foggy? Waking Through The Night? Poor Memory? Depression and Irritability? Having No Interest in Sex? Constipation? Aching Muscles and Joint Pain? Muscle Cramps? Worrying You May Be Infertile? Craving Sugar and Carbs? Feeling The Cold? Hair Loss? Using Coffee and Alcohol to Lift You?

What Does Your Thyroid Do, and What Does This Mean For You? The thyroid gland is the major player in controlling how many calories you burn. It produces hormones that control the body’s metabolism. If your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) it’s almost impossible to lose that spare tyre around your middle, no matter how many carbs you cut out or how many hours you spend on the treadmill. Blood Testing Current blood testing methods don’t tell the whole story. Blood tests (TSH) can only measure how much thyroid hormone you have in your blood – they can’t measure how well your hormones are working. So, if you do have a thyroid problem, it may not always be picked up. New Way of Testing American thyroid specialists, Dr. Konrad Kail and Dr. Daryl Turner have developed a quick and non-invasive medical thyroid screening test, that’s been used by US doctors for the past ten years to accurately diagnose thyroid issues. The good news is, once your thyroid function is accurately diagnosed, the medication and nutrients you need to get your thyroid balanced can be established. With a balanced thyroid your energy will increase, you will lose weight easily, and you’ll feel happier in yourself. Your health is your greatest asset, so, if you suspect that your thyroid isn’t quite right, don’t put off getting tested, you deserve to feel fantastic every day.

Festival fare While the concept of glamping has been around for almost two decades, festivals are pioneering new add-ons to increase comfort and cool factor. Launched last year to fanfare, WILDfest Southern Highlands offers bespoke experiences and camping in the picturesque ruins of a NSW mining settlement. Bell tents – complete with 900 thread count sheets and resident concierge – are paired with sumptuous meals using locally foraged ingredients and a tailored three-day program. “You don’t have to sacrifice creature comforts to experience the great Australian wilderness,” says founder Amanda Fry. “We’re providing unforgettable experiences, such as rejuvenating treatments in an open-air bush spa, or the ‘Hike and Harvest’ to the top of a magnificent escarpment where deckchairs and cool-climate wines

await, alongside yoga, kayaking, abseiling and mountain biking.” The festival is set to be rolled out to other remote regions of Australia. A seasoned festival addition, Flash Camp borrowed the concept of ‘mobile glamping’ from the UK’s Glastonbury Festival and created custom-designed tents for the Australian environment. Paired with a hotel-like reception area, free Wi-Fi, local catering, fresh flowers, fluffy white towels and eco-friendly toiletries, the pop-up hotel has taken pride of place at the likes of Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival, and is moving to Bluesfest next year. ark back to the camping trips of your youth. Kitted out with back-breaking packs, assembling a patchworked tent with clumsy pegs and a wood mallet was arduous and frustrating work. Dinner was a lacklustre affair of rehydrated pasta or baked beans, and your bed for the night was a damp sleeping bag on uneven earth. Synonymous with roughing it, old-school camping wasn’t for the faint of heart. These days, however, camping is an entirely different ball game. In fact, we’re in the midst of a bona fide camping revolution. Whether motivated by saving pennies, a digital detox or by an urge to reconnect with nature, travellers across Australia and New Zealand are camping in style. From pop-up glamping tents and retro caravans, to added features that would put a five-star hotel to shame, it’s camping, but not as you know it.

No stress camping Hate camping? Or perhaps you don’t have either the gear or inclination to schlep a tent to a site and assemble it. Either way, these days you can enjoy a night under the stars without having to lift a finger. Introducing easy camping. Catering to time-poor (read lazy) wannabe campers, a raft of companies is offering to take care of every component, from supplying, transporting and assembling all the gear, to making the beds and providing the food. One of the best – offering combined hiking and camping – is Light to Light Camps on NSW’s Sapphire Coast. Taking in some

80-85_EXPLORE_CAMPING.indd 83

of Australia’s most spectacular coastline, travellers need only carry their own water and a camera before retiring at the end of the day with a slap-up meal, hot shower and luxurious camp bed. But it’s not only tents that are on offer. The new Bush Hideouts 4WD Defender Experience, 113km north of Melbourne, is in a category of its own. Picked up from Melbourne Airport or the CBD, guests will be driven to a riverside or mountaintop location within 500 acres of private wilderness. They are then left with the iconic vehicle decked out with a bed, slide-out kitchen and a 65-litre water tank with outdoor shower capabilities.

“There are plenty of companies who set up tents but there’s nothing like this,” says Steven Blick, Bush Hideouts owner. “Guests just bring their clothes and nothing else – they don’t even have to drive. We set everything up and then they’re left alone, in the company of roos and wombats, and then in the morning we come and pack everything up.” The experience comes with a 60-litre fridge full of produce, including oysters, charcuterie boards, local cheeses, awardwinning breads, cold-pressed coffee and fresh fish, all paired with local wines. A freeze-dried camping meal will never be the same again.

83

Into the wild While the idea of having everything done for you is undeniably appealing, sometimes you just want to get away from it all and live out your own (mini) version of Robyn Davidson’s Tracks, Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods or Cheryl Strayed’s Wild. The antithesis of easy camping, freedom camping is all about selfsufficiency. Unencumbered, trekking through wide-open spaces, breathing fresh air, falling asleep under moonlit skies and waking up to a spectacular dawn: can it get any better than that? Also known as ‘free’ camping – because of the lack of a campground fee – this hike-in-hike-out trend

has been fuelled in part by the evolution of camping kit. An array of lightweight and tech-y camping gear has been developed to remedy the groans and aches that come with heavy packs, making dreams of a wilderness escape an easy reality. “We’ve designed gear to be adaptive, lightweight and quick to set up,” explains Blake Richardson, senior equipment designer at Kathmandu. “So, time is spent less on nursing sore backs and setting up, and more on exploring.” New innovations, such as solar-charging tents, also take into account the needs of travellers who, by avoiding campsites, also forsake the accompanying amenities. New Zealand is widely regarded as the free-camping capital of the world, however, it’s a misconception that you can camp anywhere. Much of the country’s farmland is privately owned and cannot be camped on without permission. To avoid a hefty fine, download the free CamperMate app and everything will be sweet as.

80-85_EXPLORE_CAMPING.indd 84

Some of the standouts include the stunning Robin Hood Bay in Marlborough, where you can fish, surf and dolphin-spot. And, in the North Island’s Bay of Plenty, Whitikau at the westernmost point of Raukumara Forest Park. In Australia, check out the country’s highest campsite in Kosciuszko National Park, NSW. Camping is permitted virtually anywhere, but it’s the Main Range (which encompasses the highest peak) that offers the best views.

Roll with it The beauty of the open road is even more profound when your vehicle doubles as a bed. No plans, no overpriced accommodation and few restrictions; the sense of freedom can be exhilarating. Little wonder that retirees are hitting the road in caravans, motor homes and trailers in ever-increasing numbers. Nicknamed ‘grey nomads’, Tourism Research Australia reported last year that around 2.6 million of these trips were taken by those in the 55 to 70-year-old age bracket. This is up 12 per cent on the previous year, and 90 per cent since 2000. But it’s not only oldies getting in on the act.

“In recent years, we have seen a huge uptake in millennials taking a caravan road trip,” says Stuart Lamont, CEO of Caravan Industry Association of Australia. “And the industry has definitely been revolutionised as a result.” A new generation is loading their dogs, laptops and surf boards into revamped VWs and Airstreams and embracing the trend. “This growth can be partly attributed to the increased promotion of the ‘vanning’ lifestyle though social media,” Stuart says. One such social phenomena is the Vanlife Diaries, an Australian digital movement now followed by half a million people worldwide. This and the #vanlife movement allow those travelling in camper vans to share their experience. For many of these people, vanning is not just a means of transport; it’s a way of life. Facing the choice of a crippling mortgage or driving towards the sunset on a perennial adventure, they’re opting for the latter. Jumping from one great travel experience to the next without a care in the world? Now that’s an appealing prospect.

he planet’s most isolated archipelago is also one of its hottest holiday destinations, with good reason. Ever watched molten lava squeeze through cracks in the Earth’s surface before it oozes its way to the sea? You can in Hawaii. How about tucking into a barrel in the birthplace of big-wave surfing? That’s right – Hawaii again. And where else can you stand on the summit of the world’s tallest mountain? You’ve got it … Hawaii’s your place. Considering it’s one of America’s smallest states, Hawaii packs a disproportionately powerful punch with regard to what you can see and do. Waterfalls, beaches, volcanoes, jungles, canyons – the list goes on. Activity-wise, there’s surfing and hiking, kayaking and diving, zip lining and mountain biking. For those who prefer flop-anddrop holidays, Hawaii’s food fuses, as the locals say, 'onolicious'

86-93_EXPLORE_HAWAII.indd 88

flavours sourced from its mixed ancestral heritage, there’s no end of accommodation options and its beaches are some of the most celebrated in the world. The Hawaiian archipelago is a chain of 137 islands, all formed by volcanic activity across an area measuring 2400 kilometres from end to end. Any Hawaiian holiday from Australia will inevitably start and finish at Honolulu International Airport on Oahu –

home to Pearl Harbour, Pipeline and more than half its population. For many, this is as far as they’ll get, bunking down in one of many high-rise condos and swanky hotels overlooking Waikiki Beach. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Expand your horizons and you’ll discover a rich and varied archipelago that would take years to explore. Two of Hawaii’s eight main islands, Niihau and Kahoolawe, are off-limits to tourists, and Oahu’s charms (North Shore surfing, outlet shopping, Diamond Head) have been well documented. But the remaining five – Kauai, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Hawaii (otherwise known as the Big Island) – all possess an ambience that each can call their own. Everyone has their favourite and their reasons why are many. What’s certain is that any journey here starts with an ‘aloha’. Beyond that, how you fill your travels is up to you.

Larger than all the other islands combined, Hawaii’s variable landscape attracts beach bums, vulcanologists, history buffs, nature lovers and athletes. It’s here that the brutal Ironman World Championship triathlon takes place around Kailua-Kona each October, and where Captain James Cook met his demise in Kealakekua Bay. Comprised of five overlapping volcanoes, the highest is the dormant Mauna Kea, at 4205 metres above sea level. Measured from the ocean floor, however, it reaches 10,200 metres – taller, even, than Mount Everest. Watch the sunset from the summit, surrounded by radio telescopes all pointing towards space. More volatile is the smaller Kilauea, inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where lava flows battle lava glows for attention.

THE VALLEY ISLE Of all the Hawaiian islands, Maui is said to have the most swimmable beaches, particularly along the west coast, from Kihei to Maluaka. Nothing beats watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand from anywhere along this stretch of coastline.

Two volcanoes dominate the island – Mauna Kahalawai and Haleakala. Hire a convertible Mustang, then hang onto your seat as you twist and turn through 600 bends and past 80-odd waterfalls around the foot of Haleakala on Maui’s Hana Highway. Or come here between November and May, when migrating North Pacific humpback whales breed in the shallow waters off Lahaina and Maalaea.

Must do’s: • The dawn Haleakala cycling tour from summit to sea • Snorkel inside Molokini Crater’s sunken caldera off Maui’s west coast • Settle your nerves with an ale at Charley’s in Paia – a favourite haunt of Willie Nelson – after checking out nearby big-wave break Jaws (Pe'ahi).

THE FRIENDLY ISLE Want a taste of what Hawaii was like before the developers moved in? Then come to Molokai, the birthplace of the hula. Close to half the resident population claim native Hawaiian ancestry, and that rich heritage is better preserved here than elsewhere in Hawaii. Time never rushes on Molokai, so you can slow down and reacquaint yourself with your love for the outdoors. You’ll need to hire a car to get around, even though roads seem like an afterthought. There’s only one traffic light on the entire island. And with just a single hotel, you might have to rent a condo or book a homestay. After that, just chill out, dude.

Daily ferry services operate from Lahaina Harbour in Maui to Manele Bay in Lanai and Kaunakakai Harbour in Molokai. Alternatively, cruise between the larger islands with Norwegian Cruise Lines or Princess Cruises. See gohawaii.com/au for more information.

The Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay has undergone a US$450 million remodelling, with a second Four Seasons in the mountains undergoing renovations. Maui is a stone’s throw away, but this is the island to escape crowds. There's no traffic lights, no malls and no misplaced hype. No worries!

Hawaii’s oldest and northernmost island, Kauai, is where dinosaurs roamed in Jurassic Park and where Elvis blazed a new career as a tour guide in Blue Hawaii. It is arguably the archipelago's prettiest island and certainly its wettest, with average annual rainfall of 11,455mm streaming off Mt Waialeale helping to create a veritable Garden of Eden. All that rain has shaped and scoured a landscape that’s smothered in tropical rainforest, soaked in waterfalls and splintered with canyons. Mark Twain once described the gaping Waimea Canyon as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’. And the Na Pali Coast is a tangle of hidden coves and arches beneath towering sea cliffs. Simply stunning.

he Mornington Peninsula – or simply “the Peninsula” to the legions of Melburnians who treat it as their summertime playground – certainly has a blue-blood pedigree, with real estate prices to match. But this popular beach destination, with its rolling green hinterland, just a little over an hour’s drive south-east of Melbourne, is fast cementing its reputation as one of Victoria’s best destinations for creative dining, great produce and fine wine – not to mention a groundbreaking new boutique hotel.

Wine and dine Victoria’s leading coolclimate producer of pinot noir and chardonnay, the Mornington Peninsula hinterland is punctuated with more than 50 cellar doors and over 200 vineyards. Crittenden has one of the swishest experiences in the ’hood, with guided tastings of wines in a bespoke space complete with open fire, while perennial favourites include the posh Polperro and the amiably rustic Foxeys Hangout. Food-wise, there’s a swathe of territory to cover, from the reliably

sophisticated European menu at winery Ten Minutes by Tractor (also check out Petit Tracteur, their new, more casual bistro complete with boules piste) to the lunchtime pizzas churned out of the wood-fired oven at T’Gallant, consumed at picnic tables in the lush garden. Green Olive at Red Hill Vineyard and Olive Grove keeps things grounded with tapas and simple lunch dishes made from their own farm and other local produce, while Montalto offers diners a two-speed experience: the fine-dining restaurant or a packed picnic hamper in the sculpturedecorated grounds.

95

Sleep on it The big news in the area is the arrival of Jackalope, a boutique 46-room hotel at the Willow Creek Vineyard in Merricks North, named after the giant-horned jackrabbit of North American myth. It certainly sounds improbable, but it is a fully-realised triumph of artistic imagination colliding with a healthy budget. Port Phillip Estate is definitely worth a look for its winning triumvirate of food, booze and views. Designed by Wood Marsh – the same firm responsible for the sculpture-dotted Eastlink freeway linking Melbourne with the Mornington Peninsula – the curved, rammedearth building is home to the cellar door. Here you can overlook the vines as they tumble towards the distant ocean and taste the estate’s range of multi award-winning wines. There is also an upmarket restaurant and six ultramodern accommodation suites nestled into the hillside that certainly ramp up the meaning of ‘boutique’.

Hanging with the hoi polloi In the summer months, the Portsea Pub rises above its station, thanks to a who’s who of Melbourne’s glitterati and politerati – and everyone else in between. Occupying a brilliant vantage point above the bay beach, this historic watering hole has plenty of outdoor tables, a sloping lawn for the kids to tumble on, and the hardestworking bartenders in the business.

Caffeination, at the double Getting a decent coffee on the Peninsula used to be like finding the proverbial needle in the fictional haystack, but times have changed. Breakfast at the food wonderland known as the Red Hill Epicurean, the region’s former cool stores, involves the intoxicating scent of house-roasted beans and freshly-baked bread. The quaint 1920s weatherboard Merricks General Store is another morning hotspot, with hearty breakfasts backed up by coffee from Dromana roaster Little Rebel.

To really get into the regional terroir, operators such as MP Experience Food and Wine Tours will whisk you to meet producers off the beaten track for truffle and mushroom hunts, cheese-making workshops, cooking classes and more.

Sorrento Back Beach. TOP LEFT: Peninsula Hot Springs. BOTTOM LEFT: Green Olive.

ACTIVE PENINSULA What to do in the troublesome space between meals on the Mornington Peninsula?

SOAK AWAY YOUR CARES Check into the Peninsula Hot Springs for some serious R&R. Choose your geothermallyheated mineral spring in a lush garden setting (there’s even one on a hilltop with 360-degree views), sit back and relax. In the day spa, opt for a Turkish-style hamam, or the new Clay Ridge experience, using therapeutic clays from across Australia (weather dependent).

BEACH IT Families flock to the shallow, protected bay beaches (plenty of them are pooch-friendly as well), where the multicoloured 19th-century bathing boxes provide a cheerful backdrop. The patrolled Portsea and Sorrento ocean beaches are popular when the mercury’s up, but it’s always possible to find rugged and relatively unpopulated stretches of coastline, such as Pearses Beach, on the Blairgowrie oceanfront. And if it’s waves you’re after, some of the best surf in the region can be found at Gunnamatta, Shoreham and Point Leo.

USE YOUR LEGS Stretching for 6.5 kilometres between Red Hill and Merricks, the Red Hill Rail Trail wends its way through native bush land open farmland; it’s some of the prettiest hinterland countryside. Tackling it by foot or on a bike is a good way to escape the Peninsula’s often madding crowds.

The Peninsula is not only renowned for wine. Hit the distillery door at Bass & Flinders and sample the range of artisan gin, supplemented by vodka and an Aussie cognac – and book ahead for a gin-making masterclass. For more grain-not-grape action, Mornington Peninsula Brewery is well worth seeking out. A clever warehouse conversion has resulted in the Platonic ideal of the beer barn complete with beer garden where visitors can drop in for a hit of craft beer, pizzas and live music. At biodynamic apple orchard Mock Red Hill, run by the same family for generations, you’ll find the fresh product to keep the doctor away, but the real find is the ‘cider door’ for a tasting of their light, crisp singleorigin ciders.

A flying start

102

You can find almost every kind of Asian food in Taiwan, especially regional Chinese cuisine and great Japanese food – Japan occupied the nation for 50 years until 1945. Taiwan’s citizens love to eat and Taipei’s streets are crammed with restaurants, food stalls and, in many areas, bustling night markets. Every tourist should head to at least one night market (some of the best include Raohe, Shilin and Ningxia), but appreciation of Taiwanese food culture should start at breakfast. Traditional breakfast stores aren’t always easy to find. Keep an eye out for small, open shopfronts with a handful of tables and chairs, and staff busy behind a hotplate. All of them sell omelettes, sandwiches and fried radish cakes. A smaller number focus on more interesting traditional breakfasts. Look for stalls where staff work fresh dough into long sticks called youtiao. Fried until golden brown and crisp, they’re a delicious treat – a little like a savoury doughnut. Taipei’s Yonghe District, across the Xindian River in the south-west, is known for its breakfast shops (some are open 24 hours) and the locally made thick soy milk. At Yong He Soy Milk King, brisk staff take orders for pancakes, steamed buns and youtiao. Here, the shaobing – savoury,

100-105_EXPLORE_TAIPEI.indd 102

crumbly, breakfast pastries sprinkled with sesame seeds – are a must. Order one packed with fresh salad greens and mayonnaise, or try the pork and egg version. It’s messy to eat, but thankfully nobody notices. Other delights include fan tuan, a crunchy, salty-sweet rice roll of dried pork, pickles and a youtiao rolled inside a ball of firm glutinous rice, and Taiwanese staple dan bing, a pork-filled, crisp egg pancake. Yong He Soy Milk King, one of several restaurants around the city with the same name, sits on the three-way intersection of Ziyou Street, Zhonghe Road and Yonghe Road. The sprawling Yongan Market next door sells fresh produce, steamed bread and local soy milk.

Culture hack From Yongan Market head north to Zhongshan and tap into the local art scene. Taiwan, one of the most liberal countries in Asia, is a thriving democracy with a flourishing alternative arts culture. Small art spaces can be found

shows and art talks. On the day I visit, artist Xu Huiqing’s exhibit features videos and photographs of people shovelling a mix of fruit and paint into their mouths and then spraying it across glass screens – representing teachers “spraying” education at children. Xu, a teacher, is at the gallery talking to visitors. “When teachers talk to kids they are trying to change them,” she says. “So talking can be like attacking.” Another small gallery worth visiting is Beyond Gallery, located behind an unimposing shop front, with only enough space to display the work of one or two artists. Exhibitions change regularly, so check Facebook. The Treasure Hill artist village near National Taiwan University is a lovely spot for a late-afternoon stroll. It began as an illegal settlement and is now a government-sanctioned labyrinth of aged buildings and tucked-away artist spaces. Every August it’s home to the Taipei Arts Festival.

Browsing boutiques, street stalls, malls and markets is one of the pleasures of exploring Taipei. The sprawling Shilin Night Market, Taipei’s largest and best-known, boasts a hub of food vendors, and a range of fashion and homewares stalls. Its side streets and alleyways are home to small shops, cinemas and bars. If you’d rather avoid the city’s massive shopping malls, the backstreets of eastern Taipei, particularly between Zhongxiao Dunhua subway station and Civic Boulevard, are a great place to find interesting boutiques. Check out Immense, which specialises in black and white clothing by local designers, the trend-setting AMPM for edgier street style, or the nearby 38 Design Store where you can often see clothing being made on-site.

Mountains, rivers and fresh sulphur Yangmingshan National Park is an 11,300-hectare cluster of 20 or so volcanoes to the north of Taipei, including the (possibly still active) Datun Mountain. It’s an hour’s bus ride from Jiantan subway station, but a hire car or scooter is faster. Thick rainforest covers most of the area and pretty streams and waterfalls carve through valleys full of colourful birds and butterflies. There’s no better place to balance out a day in the city. Bayan Hot Springs is a 20-minute walk from Yangjin Road on the park’s north-eastern fringe. Further up the trail is a hellish-looking

100-105_EXPLORE_TAIPEI.indd 104

There’s no better place to balance out a day in the city landscape where sulphur-smelling gas spews from fumaroles and a stream of scalding hot water flows through a ravine. At Bayan, in a rainforested gully, this hot sulphuric ‘tea’ merges with a cold stream to form inviting pools at varying temperatures, some nudging the threshold between comfort and pain. You know you have reached the springs when you see a large sign threatening fines if you soak in them, next to groups of people doing just that. Locals will tell you the signs are to protect the park against legal liability, as these areas can be dangerous during bad weather and it’s important to check the forecast. “The police come sometimes and tell people to leave, and sometimes they issue fines,” one soaker says. “It’s not that expensive. I just think of it as buying an entry ticket.”

Beer o’clock Taipei’s craft beer scene may have gotten off to a late start, but there’s now plenty of choice and craft beer bars and breweries are popular with the young Taipei crowd. Crafted Beer & Co has a huge selection of local and imported beers. It’s part of the eclectic Maji Square next to Yuanshan subway station. The 23 Public bar near Taipower Building subway station serves a range of local brews including the delicious Number 1 Pale Ale, and holds a fun open-mic comedy night every Monday. Another excellent craft beer group is Taihu Brewing. One of its coolest bars is a refurbished 8.2m Airstream trailer inside the Commune A7 food market near Taipei’s tallest building, Taipei 101. It boasts 18 beer taps and is an excellent place to sample a cooling ale after a day of exploring.

Taiwan’s oolong tea is among the world’s best, with a smoothness, aroma and flavour difficult to find elsewhere, and it makes for a great souvenir. The better (and more expensive) varieties are grown in mountains 2000 metres above sea level with minimal use of pesticides. A good place to sample and buy tea is the Daan Jade Market. It’s a short walk from the Daan Park subway station and only open on weekends.

riving through Northland, the long peninsula that stretches north beyond bustling Auckland, is like taking a step back in time. I don’t mean that in a provincial way – it has to do with pace. Road-tripping through New Zealand is one of my favourite pastimes. I love the drama of South Island scenery, the desert expanses of the North Island Central Plateau, and the buzz of Wellington. But heading north? I can’t help but feel this is what New Zealand must have been like before the dawn – the steady, beating heart of a rare green country. Northland takes its time, and a journey along its winding two-lane roads reveals rich forests, rolling farmlands flanked by golden beaches, living and historical cultural sites, and a string of tiny towns you’ll feel you’ve discovered all on your own. An easy weekend away from Auckland and accessible year round, Northland is the ideal location for a road trip.

DAY ONE:

AUCKLAND TO RUSSELL (232 KILOMETRES) Leave Auckland early to beat the morning traffic and head for Warkworth, about an hour north. This is your breakfast stop and the cafés of this river town are worth the wait. Try Chocolate Brown, serving traditional Kiwi classics like manuka honey-smoked bacon and free-range eggs or mince on toast. Ginger Café makes its own muesli, or delectable blueberry pancakes. Fancy a picnic lunch? Stop by So French Café Deli and pick up a pre-made meal, cheese, breads and dips for later. If you’d like a bottle of wine for your picnic, the small town

106-113_EXPLORE_NZ NORTHLAND.indd 108

of Matakana, about 12 minutes north-east of Warkworth, is home to Ascension Wine Estate (one of the region’s first vineyards), as well as Brick Bay Wines, a 200-acre boutique winery with views of the ocean. Take a rest stop two hours north of Matakana. Just after Whangarei, pull away from State Highway 1 onto the loop road through the coastal towns of Ngunguru, Tutukaka and Matapouri and stretch your legs on stunning beaches before continuing on to Russell. Russell is a quaint town of weathered houses set on a golden sliver of beach that couldn’t be more unrecognisable from its lawless beginnings as a port for sailors and whalers. Even if you’re not a history buff, you’ll still feel the presence of the past here. Stay or dine at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel, one of the oldest inns in New Zealand (“refreshing rascals and reprobates since 1827”). Stroll past Christ Church – the white weatherboard church, built in 1836, is New Zealand’s oldest. And climb Flagstaff Hill, where Ngapuhi chief Hone Heke felled the flagstaff flying the Union Jack in an act of defiance several years after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. You may be only four hours north of Auckland, but you’re already a world away.

Breathe in the bay

Waitangi Treaty Grounds are a bicultural immersion worthy of several hours. The Te Kongahu Museum of Waitangi, cultural performances at the Te Whare Ru¯ anga meeting house and a visit to the mighty Ngatokimatawhaorua war canoe make for a memorable day at the vast historic site. As you continue on, stop off at one of Kerikeri’s outdoor markets (like The Old Packhouse Market) or local stands to pick up some of the region’s fresh produce. Get enough for dinner and breakfast, and enjoy the afternoon drive north-west to the Aupo¯ uri Peninsula, the narrow neck that makes up the top of the peninsula. This drive on winding two-lane roads isn’t made for rushing. Spend the night at one of the campsites, holiday parks or guest houses between Awanui and Te Kao.

109

DAY THREE: DAY TWO:

RUSSELL TO THE TE KAO AREA (APPROXIMATELY 183 KILOMETRES) From Russell, get an early start to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds (about an hour’s drive), often referred to as the birthplace of modern New Zealand. In 1840, Ma¯ ori chiefs signed an agreement with representatives of the British Crown, determining New Zealand’s future with the aim of working together. Northland was one of the first Ma¯ ori settlements and, by the 18th century, 25 per cent of the Ma¯ ori population lived in Northland. The region is still home to nearly one-third of New Zealand’s Ma¯ ori population. To understand Northland and New Zealand, it is important to have an understanding of this agreement, and the

106-113_EXPLORE_NZ NORTHLAND.indd 109

TE KAO AREA TO THE HOKIANGA REGION (APPROXIMATELY 145 KILOMETRES)

Are you ready for something special? Get up before dawn and drive 45 minutes north to Cape Reinga and watch the sun rise where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea meet. This (nearly) northernmost point of New Zealand, with its lonely white lighthouse, is believed by the Ma¯ ori to be the departure place of spirits, where the dead leave Aotearoa for the spiritual homeland Hawaiki. Once the sun has risen and your heart is filled with the wild beauty of the morning, it’s time to have a little fun. Head 25 minutes south to the Te Paki sand dunes, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and an ideal spot for a little sand tobogganing. Hiking up the sand dunes will work up an appetite, so stop

off in Kaitaia for a spot of lunch. NZ Surf Bros, Beachcomber Restaurant and Mussel Rock Café and Bar are all local favourites. From there, drive southwest to the ethereal Hokianga Harbour area, a world apart from the sandy, sunny beaches of the Aupo¯ uri bottleneck. This is a quiet place, a deep breath, sparsely populated by visitors and locals alike. The Hokianga Harbour, a 30-kilometre body of water with an unforgiving entrance, is New Zealand’s

106-113_EXPLORE_NZ NORTHLAND.indd 110

fourth-largest harbour. The name Hokianga means “the departing place”. Stay overnight in one of the several towns along the harbour, like Rawene (try the Postmasters Lodgings, a unique boutique hotel), Opononi (the Opononi Lighthouse Motel is laid-back and overlooks the harbour), or Omapere (with the grand dame Copthorne Hotel and Resort Hokianga, an ocean-side escape if there ever was one).

DAY FOUR: THE HOKIANGA REGION TO AUCKLAND (APPROXIMATELY 273 KILOMETRES)

For the last (and longest) day of your road trip, power up with a good breakfast at the Boatshed Café (if you’re near Rawene) or the Landing Café (if you’re near Opononi or Omapere). Your first stop is to pay homage to T¯ane Mahuta, a giant 51.5-metre kauri tree towering over the Waipoua Forest, the most significant kauri forest in New Zealand. 'Lord of the forest' T¯ane Mahuta, believed to be 2000 years old, is not only the largest living tree in New Zealand, but also an important part of the Ma¯ ori creation story – Ma¯ ori still travel to T¯ane Mahuta to receive blessings. By the second half of the 19th century, the logging of kauri trees had become a major industry, with most forests eradicated by the 1920s.

After seeing the mighty T¯ane Mahuta and the Waipoua Forest for yourself, stop off at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe, about 90 minutes south, for a better understanding of the industry and the importance of these incredible, beautiful trees. From Matakohe, it’s just under two hours to Auckland, not counting any small-town explorations undertaken along the way. Four days isn’t a long journey, but take the time to experience the warm welcome of New Zealand’s far north and you’ll come away feeling not only rejuvenated, but with a better understanding of the heart and soul of this amazing country.

DAINTREE DREAMING The Daintree Rainforest is a living, breathing national treasure where ancient forest tumbles down to azure waters.

LAND BEFORE TIME Estimated to be around 180 million years old (older than the Amazon), the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Daintree provides a glimpse of the forests that once covered the supercontinent Gondwana. Home to approximately 3000 distinct plant species, around 400 bird varieties and one third of all Australian mammal species, every inch of the lush, tangled environment pulses with life. Cape Tribulation is the only place in the world where two World Heritage sites meet – the Daintree National Park and Great Barrier Reef. While it is possible to explore the region independently, professional operators will help you cover more territory and explore less accessible parts of the rainforest.

Take the Dreamtime Walk and learn about the Kuku Yalanji people’s deep connection to the rainforest, stretching back more than 65,000 years. The centre’s half-day tour offers hotel pick-up and drop-off from Port Douglas, just 20 minutes’ drive away.

Silky Oaks Lodge. ABOVE: Mossman Gorge. INSET: Take a tour with a Kuku Yalanji guide.

Daintree Tours also leads small group tours from Port, ticking off a number of the area’s must-do’s, including a rainforest board walk, crocodile cruise on Cooper Creek and creek swim. Daintree Rainforest leads walking tours of two to four hours into the Cooper Creek Wilderness, with expert guides offering insight into the forest’s complex ecosystem. To go off road, Masons Tours and Billy Tea Safaris both offer 4WD expeditions up the Bloomfield Track, across the Daintree River.

SLEEP IN THE TREES Retreat from the world in a grown-up tree house. The elegant Silky Oaks Lodge sits in the canopy overlooking the Mossman River. Take part in a complimentary yoga class, treat yourself in the Healing

Waters Spa or rent a snorkel and search for platypus in a nearby freshwater billabong. Daintree Eco Lodge and Spa offers 15 luxury banyans with mesh walls to let in the forest’s sounds. The sustainable eco resort is enfolded in greenery, offering a seasonal changing menu at the open-air Julaymba Restaurant, and spa treatments harnessing native botanicals from the in-house Daintree Wellness Spa.

NICHOLAS TAJUDIN Nickname: Nick | Job Title: Project Manager | Age: 32 | No. of years at Jetstar: 11 Location: Melbourne Head Office Describe a typical day at work. What’s typical? The great thing about Jetstar is the diversity of the problems we solve and tasks we tackle. We are dealing with airport changes such as infrastructure and technology, checkin relocations, changes to aircraft parking locations and reviewing fleet schedules. A current project which is very exciting is a new port on the Jetstar network: Zhengzhou in China. I feel pretty fortunate to work with such an awesome team, many of whom have become more than workmates. At Jetstar we work with

incredibly supportive people who always make every situation – good, bad or ugly – very light-hearted. It’s the supportive people at Jetstar that give our projects great outcomes.

on initiatives. Most of these that our department leads have a direct impact on how Jetstar performs – a challenge that makes every day exciting.

What do you love about aviation? Aviation has given passengers the opportunity to travel and see the world. Today fares are more competitive than ever before, and this competitiveness is something we have achieved at Jetstar.

What has been your greatest challenge? My current project of port readiness for China has had some ups and downs ... but this has also been a great opportunity to learn cultural differences.

What’s the most exciting thing about your role? We bring people together to collaborate

A flying start for neonatal babies

130 130

THE JETSTAR Flying Start program invites community groups and not-for-profit organisations to apply for a $30,000 grant, made up of $15,000 of Jetstar flights and $15,000 cash, to fund a project that enriches the lives of people in their local community. The latest recipient of a Jetstar Flying Start grant in New Zealand is The Neonatal Trust in Dunedin, Christchurch and Hawke’s Bay. Each year approximately 5000 premature and sick babies are born in New Zealand. The Neonatal Trust works with the District Health Boards to provide support to families of neonatal (premature or sick fullterm) babies as they make their journey through neonatal intensive care, the transition home, and onwards. The grant will be used to provide support packs to parents on the arrival of

their neonatal baby and to establish support groups and services throughout the country. Executive Director of The Neonatal Trust New Zealand, Neil O’Styke, says the contribution will be well received for families all across the country. “Every 90 minutes, a Kiwi baby is born prematurely and starts its life in the Intensive Neonatal Care Unit. These babies, and other full-term babies with illness, receive direct support from The Neonatal Trust New Zealand including information packs, regular lunches for families, ward visits, playgroups and logistics of accommodation and travel,” he says.

IN 2015 a Jetstar Flying Start grant was awarded to Crepes for Change, a social enterprise that reinvests 100 per cent of its profits into eliminating youth homelessness. Crepes for Change recently identified that the extreme rates of homelessness in the Northern Territory demanded attention and set a challenge to make a difference. To help achieve this goal, Crepes for Change held its first Northern Territory Change Summit. The summit brought together a group Do you know a not-for-profit of young, organisation that needs a passionate Flying Start? Applications leaders to are now open at generate Jetstar.com ideas to

help combat youth homelessness in the Northern Territory, with the aim to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to pursue their own change projects. The Jetstar Flying Start grant allowed Crepes for Change to fly 12 inspired youths from the Northern Territory to Melbourne to attend the summit and participate in an accelerator program created by YGAP (see page 129). “To have a company like Jetstar back us to create real, measurable and sustainable change within Australia demonstrates Jetstar’s undertsanding of its social responsibility,” says Levi Fernandez, Crepes for Change Impact Officer.

SMALL CHANGE, big difference

As the StarKids partnership between World Vision and Jetstar turns 10, we look back at the life-changing work your small change has contributed to across the network

veryone’s come home from a trip with a little loose change in their pocket. Many of you may have dropped that money into a StarKids envelope on a Jetstar flight, or added a little extra when booking on Jetstar.com. It may be just a small gesture, but over the past 10 years, millions of these gestures have added up to make a huge difference. “Through the StarKids program, and the generosity of Jetstar’s customers, we have been able to change the lives of many thousands of

children across SouthEast Asia and Australia,” says Claire Rogers, CEO of World Vision Australia. “Jetstar is incredibly proud to partner with World Vision through our StarKids initiative to give children in Australia and many of our destinations across Asia a brighter future,” says Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO Dean Salter. “In 10 years, our generous customers and team members have raised more than $9 million, and we’re committed to seeing this life-changing work continue.” In destinations across

the Jetstar network, there are children facing threats to their wellbeing – through poverty, conflict, violence, malnutrition, depravation and discrimination. StarKids is part of Jetstar’s commitment to giving back, and helping make the world a better place.

Meet the StarKids StarKids donations have aided community development and emergency response projects across Asia, including in Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

But the money raised also goes to projects closer to home in Australia and New Zealand, such as the Young Mob Leadership Program. Mark Thorne was a participant in the program, which helps Indigenous youths develop their leadership skills and connect with their culture. Mark started off as a student, went on to become a young leader,

132-133_ESSENTRIALS_STARKIDS.indd 133

and is now a facilitator. “I would like to say a big thank you to the Jetstar team and customers for supporting Young Mob over the past 10 years,” Marks says. “The donations and support that we have received from Jetstar have had a big impact in my life and, I’m sure, in the lives of our young leaders who are a part of the program today.” StarKids has helped better the lives of many young people just like Mark, and, with your ongoing assistance, we hope to help many more in the years to come.

MYANMAR PROJECT Inspired by the StarKids 10-year anniversary, a small group of Jetstar team members joined World Vision Australia to visit programs funded by StarKids in Myanmar. The team found communities thriving on a commitment to working together to help one another. One program started when World Vision donated three motorbikes to a local community group, along with the basic skills and knowledge to start a small business. Fast-forward to today, and the group has successfully bought and sold 97 motorbikes to locals to use as a means of employment, whether as a taxi service or as a courier.

people

The bikes can be purchased straight from the group and paid for in fair instalments. The extra income allows the owners to provide for their families and purchase essentials such as stationery for their school-aged children or seeds to expand their crop. The best bit? Profits from group activities go towards improving the health and wellbeing of the community overall. While there, the team met new mother Wai. Standing proudly with her baby on her hip, Wai recounted how the community group financially assisted her with the birth of her child. Something for which she is extremely grateful.

LONG-HAUL LESSONS

Fifteen hours on a plane? Three stopovers? No worries, we’ve got the secrets to long-haul travel covered

134

Flight attendants know how important it is to take care of yourself inflight. So take their tips: get up and stretch your legs on a long-haul flight, take moisturiser or refreshing wipes and wear your comfiest clothes. All of these small things can make a huge difference to ensuring you arrive refreshed and ready for your next adventure.

Anyone who has taken a 15-hour flight can tell you that having the right gear can make a big difference. Neck pillows, noise-cancelling headphones, a proper eye mask and earplugs can help you get some rest when you need it. But remember to only take what you know you’ll use.

ME TIME

staying If you find that you get dry skin, itchy eyes or a dry throat on long flights, it might be because you haven’t drunk enough water. It’s easy to forget, especially if you’re

Backpage I TRAVEL TALES

Lying high When is it okay to tell a little white lie when travelling? WORDS CHRISTINE RETSCHLAG

152_BACKPAGE_TRAVEL TALES.indd 152

Meet my imaginary husband...

So you can speak Chinese, can you? truth. Matt is indeed a chippie on the Sunny Coast and he is messy. The skill is in omitting certain facts: we don’t particularly like each other. Holidaying overseas, I was once accused by a tour operator spruiking his offerings on the street of lying about already having taken a similar tour the previous day.

While I have, in fact, used this trick before to scare off touts, for once I was telling the truth. So I was astonished when the tour operator started grilling me about minute details of the tour in question, all of which I passed with flying colours. Unsatisfied, he screamed at me: “You are a liar and a disgrace to Australia!” The one time you tell the truth … I arrived back in Australia from a China trip once to find there were no immigration

forms written in English, only in Chinese. Having filled out the form many times, and rather weary from my overnight flight, I simply ticked all the boxes I knew meant “no”. When I arrived at the immigration desk, the officer asked, with a grin on his face, “So you can speak Chinese, can you?” To which I pointed at the nearest Chinese man, and replied: “No, but my husband over there can.” You may as well print out my boarding pass straight to hell.

ILLUSTRATION GREGORY ROBERTS

152

A STRICT Catholic upbringing means I’m a notoriously terrible liar, the threat of an eternity in hell enough to keep me on the straight and narrow. But strangely, when travelling, I am prone to sprinkling the odd porkie pie if it makes life a little easier. My fellow females, I’ve noticed, are especially skilled at this trick. Who hasn’t had to concoct an imaginary husband while travelling in certain countries to avoid unwanted attention? In my case the fable goes something like this: “I’d love to have dinner with you, but my husband Matt, a Sunshine Coast chippie, would be very angry.” This story is usually enough to keep potential paramours at bay. Particularly savvy human lie detectors will sometimes ask: “So, if you’re married, where’s your wedding ring?” To which I will reply: “Oh, it’s very expensive, and I didn’t want to lose it while on holiday.” The fact Messy Matt and I haven’t spoken for years is then lost among the hustle and bustle of the local markets. The trick to the travelling white lie is that you divulge just enough

BUY THE DIARY THAT SAVES LIVES We Australians are practical people. We like things that work, that are useful, that do something – like The Australian Women’s Health Diary. Not only is the 2018 diary a practical way to organise our busy lives, it’s packed with health issues important to women – like breast, heart, bone, family and mental health, along with diet, exercise, skincare and lots more. And, most practical of all, every dollar raised from this diary goes to clinical trials research that saves and improves the lives of people with breast cancer, every day. Buy the diary for yourself – or as a gift for that special someone – and help to save lives today, tomorrow and forever. LISA WILKINSON Today Show co-host, mother and wife.
