FALL FASHION

FALL FOR FASHION By Maya A. Reilly Fashion Stylist & Fashion Institute of Technology Graduate Fashion is in full-swing come fall – magazines release their biggest issues packed with new styles and trends, New York Fashion Week is full of frenzied fashionistas trying to get a glimpse of the biggest designers new collections, and retail stores’ racks are revamped as sandals and shorts are marked down and shipped out – a distant memory of another summer gone by. The fall season truly defines the fashion industry – it means a fresh start and a “new face” to put forward. Seasonally, it’s a clothing refresh in preparation for covering up and cool weather, and a time to combine new trends from the catwalk with your own personal style. While you may not be ready for a head-to toe red-velvet getup, complete with anklelength red velvet coat (I’m looking at you, Italian designer, Max Mara – and to think, that’s on the “mild” side!), many fall trends are incredibly versatile and adaptable to every woman’s wardrobe; plus, you may already have a few of the statement pieces we’ll talk about in your style file. As a nurse or healthcare professional, it’s easy on your closet to wear a daily uniform, but scrubs aren’t always appropriate for a dinner date or a night out. Plus, you need an opportunity to express yourself – and as Mark Twain said, “Clothes make the [wo]man.”

“IN 2017, FASHION REALLY IS BREAKING ALL THE RULES. JUST REMEMBER THESE THREE THINGS WHEN YOU'RE SHOPPING:

FABRIC, FIT AND FUNCTION.”

TOP 10 TRENDS OF FALL 2017 MENSWEAR HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Oversize suit separates and exaggerated collars take this look from dark man cave to lightenedup ladies lodge.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: Mix elements of menswear and womenswear to make this trend more feminine and flirty. Opting for a structured shirt? Mix it with jeans, a statement bag and heels. Or take it one step further with menswear inspired footwear, just don’t forget to go girly with makeup and hair! A structured, collared shirt is a versatile silhouette that belongs in every woman’s wardrobe.

CHECK PRINT HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Tailored lines ranging from suit separates to jumpsuits and overcoats are all decked out in check for this trend.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: Tame this bold trend by wearing it as only one piece of your outfit instead of all-over. A neutral blouse with check print pants or a flirty skirt is a great option – add a pop of red accessories (red is another big trend this season – we’ll talk about that shortly!) to make it less monochrome and more glam.

METALLICS HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Sparkle and shine create plenty of eye-catching interest in a wide variety of silhouettes, including apparel, footwear and accessories – get ready for all that glitters!

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: Opt for metallic accessories instead of all-over metallic. This trend is so bold and can go in and out of style very quickly – statement shoes, a casual jacket or a shiny bag give a great nod to the metallic trend, without it being too over the top.

RED HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Paired with red shoes and accessories for a monochrome look or neutrals to let the red apparel stand out, head to toe red is all the rage this season.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: Red is a bold color and therefore, many people are hesitant to jump on this trend. Start by adding red into only one part of your outfit; you’ll soon find that it’s a versatile neutral and can be worn with many colors and styles. Pair a red blazer with jeans, then throw it over a black dress for a night out; match red pants with casual sneakers and a tee for a community event, then add a tank and heels for a dinner date.

ALL-AMERICAN HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Folksy prints, breezy silhouettes, and details that make you think about how the west was won bring style back to our country’s roots.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: This trend is similar to the makeup of our nation – it’s a melting pot. From rustic chic, to oldwest outlaw, to Aztec prints and Native American influences, this trend can be adapted easily to your own personal style. For work, try an Aztec print skirt with boots and a neutral tee. For the weekend, throw on some jeans, chunky jewelry, and add a leather jacket or a vest. Don’t forget to top it off with a hat if you’re feeling fancy!

PUFFER JACKETS HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Warm up in a reimagined puffer jacket; new colors and details on the puffer will turn you into a true snow bunny.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: Puffer jackets are bigger than ever this year, and have been a trend to watch for the past few years. If you still don’t have a puffer, now’s the time to invest! Though the runways have been showing crazy colors and odd silhouettes, go with something neutral; you’ll get the most use out of a black, navy, tan or olive green (or even our new favorite “neutral” – red!). Try to buy a jacket with some additional features if possible – waterproof, zip-off hood, extra pockets, etc. You’ll be thankful later when you’re comfy and looking great in freezing temps!

WINTER FLORALS HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Different size floral prints in navy, olive, mustard, rose, royal blue and even winter white blossom on a wide variety of silhouettes this season.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: If you don’t want to go for large, bold flowers, try a knee-length dress in a small to medium floral print or a floral blouse with neutral pants. We tend to think of florals as a spring trend (and they are – everything starts blooming in the spring!), and this piece can do double-duty in your spring wardrobe. Pair your dress with tights and booties for fall and winter, and then with bare legs and sandals when the weather warms up.

DENIM HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: No longer just about your favorite pair of jeans, denim is head-to-toe this season in jackets, tops and pants – especially worn together.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: While a head-to-toe denim outfit scares most (I have to admit, I’ve tried to rock this trend and put on head-to-toe denim, just to feel strange and change into something else!), think about the versatility of denim and how you can apply it to your wardrobe. Look for a denim jacket in a creative design to pair with jeans, or embrace the latest embellishment trends and find your favorite new bottoms. Embroidery, distressing, patterned rinses and color accents are all trends you should explore.

MATRIX HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: Head-to-toe leather invokes a feeling of sci-fi, special agents and high-tech happenings that will make you wonder if you’re living in the now, or you’re actually in a different universe.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: While some may choose to try a full-on leather look, there are simple ways to wear this trend without looking like you’re trying too hard. Pair leather (or vegan-leather) bottoms with an oversize sweater and boots for a relaxed fall outfit. Another way to wear leather is the infamous leather jacket – many people have a staple leather jacket in their wardrobe already, or if you’re looking for an update, try a vegan-leather jacket in a fall color like oxblood, olive green or coffee.

TRENCH COATS HOW THEY'RE DOING IT: A classic style gets an update with extra-large volume, embellishments and details that take this style out of the trenches and into high-fashion.

HOW YOU'RE DOING IT: The trench coat is a closet staple, and should be a part of every woman’s wardrobe. Update this look with an extra-long style, a new neutral color (such as black or navy), or a special fabric treatment (water resistance) to make your trench more versatile for both fall and spring.

MEET THE NURSES

In this section, we sit down with two nurses to learn about their inspirational nursing journeys and why they are in the medical field.

Meet Megan Schroyer, PA from Hagerstown, MD.

SS: What made you want to enter the healthcare field?

MS: I've always had a particular interest in anatomy

and physiology and understanding disease processes. While working in a pharmacy I was very curious to understand the different medications, the uses and dosages.

SS: What are some rewarding moments in your job? MS: I work in a nursing home, so I deal a lot with

SS: Megan, can you tell us a little about yourself? MS: Of course! I was born and raised in

Hagerstown, MD. While in high school, I worked as a pharmacy technician to help prepare for my future in medicine. As a child I was back and forth wanting to be a nurse or a doctor. Along my path I became exposed to physician assistants, and realized that this was a perfect position. It provided me a position to have similar duties to a physician, but also allowed me to have the extra time with patients that provides a personal touch to each encounter. I studied at Alderson Broaddus University (at that time it was "College") where I received my undergrad in Health Sciences and Master's in Physician Assistant Studies, graduating in 2010. I got married in 2015, and I started my career in an internal medicine office as a new graduate PA in 2010. I did this for three years. During that time I had multiple responsibilities including inpatient (in the hospital), outpatient and nursing home. I learned during this position that geriatrics was my true passion. I then transitioned to Williamsport Retirement Village where I have been working for the last 4 years caring for assisted living, long term care and sub-acute rehabilitation patients.

the end-of-life moments. It is rewarding to me to make life comfortable for both the patient as well as the family. Although death is hard, I strive to create a positive experience for the families in the midst of the tragic and difficult moments. We also have a picnic every year for the residents – I get to take my patients out on jet skis on the Potomac River. They love it; some of them are saying, “Go faster, go faster!” It’s great to be able to take them out for an enjoyable time…it’s like a party!

SS: What advice would you give to those considering or just starting in the healthcare field?

MS: Get a job to gain experience in the healthcare

field. If you want to become a pharmacist, work in a pharmacy. If you think you want to work with patients, get a position where you will gain exposure with patients. Positions like ER technician is a great way to learn hands on skills including phlebotomy, catheters, EKGs, etc. If you want to work as a nurse, become a CNA/GNA. This will help you learn basic hands on skills for managing patients. Job duties include taking vital signs and dressing/bathing/toileting/feeding patients. In my experience, some of the best nurses are those who have worked as a nursing assistant prior to becoming a nurse. Another thing I would recommend is shadowing! Find someone in the community who will allow you to shadow them. See what "a day in the life" looks like for your future career.

INSPIRATION

INSPIRATION: MEET THE NURSES continued

Meet Victoria Gise, NP, a contract traveling nurse

VG: I’ll call an agency and tell them I’m looking

for work – if agency A doesn’t have anything, I’ll call agency B. I value my time greatly; it is very important to me, so I try to get the best bang for my buck. There are lots of varieties in shifts, times, how the contracts are put together, etc, so you can essentially design and tailor your work schedule to exactly what you want and are looking for. Being a contract nurse certainly has its perks! The only downside is that you’re traveling a lot, so you’re trying to remember people’s names and finding where the bathrooms and tape are!

SS: It sounds like you love your career! What would you say is your favorite part of your job?

VG: I love meeting new people and traveling to

SS: How long have you been a nurse, Victoria? VG: I’ve always had a passion to care for others,

and I like the schedule of a nurse! It took me a long time to get through schooling. I took some classes and then took a break; I got married, I had children, etc. I had taken some general education classes, but I decided after my last child’s birth that I needed more than just an entry level job. I got my degree and worked at a hospital for 17 years. I then registered to become a contract (traveling) nurse, which I’ve done for the past 5 years. I’m multi-licensed in MD, VA, and WV. My MD license transfers to 33 states.

SS: That sounds great! Can you tell us what exactly it looks like to be a contract, or traveling, nurse?

VG: A contract nurse is becoming more popular,

largely in part due to the flexibility, travel, and the salary. You can travel locally or internationally, so there’s a lot of possibilities! I am registered with several placement agencies. Contracts as a general rule are 13 weeks, but you can receive contracts in 4 week, 8 week, or even daily increments.

15

places I’ve never been before! As a general rule, my contracts end up renewing and I’m usually at the location for about a year, so I get to know people better, which is great! I really like working with the public's health. Someone has to take care of them, and I’m thankful that I get to be that person! You see all types of situations and circumstances as a nurse, and it’s my job to help them and provide the care they need.

“A CONTRACT NURSE IS BECOMING MORE POPULAR, LARGELY IN PART DUE TO THE FLEXIBILITY, TRAVEL AND THE SALARY.”

SS: How do you handle the different emotions that come along with your career?

VG: Over time I have learned to be strong,

assertive, and caring. I am there to do my job, which means I need to put on my big girl pants and do what I need to do! I am a compassionate person, and compassion goes a long way in this field. I always try to think to myself, “If I was sick, how would I want someone to treat me?” and then I try to put that into my work. I always try to treat patients the way I want to be treated.

“OVER TIME I HAVE LEARNED TO BE STRONG, ASSERTIVE AND CARING. I AM THERE TO DO MY JOB, WHICH MEANS I NEED TO PUT ON MY BIG GIRL PANTS AND DO WHAT I NEED TO DO!”

SS: What advice would you give to new nurses or

people considering entering the healthcare field?

VG: Nursing can be tough. It is physically and emotionally demanding. There are lots of choices that you have to make, and they aren’t always easy choices. However, becoming a nurse is one of the best choices I’ve made. It makes me feel so good to know that I have helped someone’s life, that I have helped them when they needed it the most. It’s a sacrifice, but it’s most definitely worth it to me.

Slow Cooker White Bean Chicken Chili INGREDIENTS:

- 3 jalapeño peppers - 2 tablespoons olive oil - 4 cloves garlic, minced - 1 ½ cups yellow onion (¼-inch dice) - 1 tablespoon cumin - 1 ¼ pound boneless skinless chicken breasts - 1 cup roasted green chilies canned, divided - 2 ½ cups white beans (2 15 oz cans) - 1 cup unsalted chicken stock divided - 1 ½ cups corn (15 oz can) - 1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt, more as needed - ¼ teaspoon black pepper

DIRECTIONS:

1. Line a small baking sheet with foil. Turn on broil setting on the oven. Evenly space out the three jalapeños on the sheet tray. Place sheet tray on the highest rack in the oven. Roast the jalapeños until the skins brown and blister, turning over as needed to get all the sides roasted, about 15 minutes. Place the roasted peppers in a small bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Allow the peppers to come to room temperature; the trapped heat will make the skins easier to peel. Once cooled, remove the skin and stems. If you like a very spicy chili, leave the seeds. For a more mild chili, remove the seeds and discard. Set the jalapeños aside.

2. In a large microwave safe bowl, add olive oil, diced onions, minced garlic, and cumin. Stir to combine. Microwave for 3 minutes, stir and cook another 2 minutes until onions are tender. Add to slow cooker. Add chicken breasts, ½ cup of the roasted green chilies, corn, 1 cup of the white beans and ½ cup chicken stock to the slow cooker.

3. In a blender, puree ½ cup roasted green chilies, roasted jalapeños, 1 cup beans, and ½ cup chicken stock until smooth, 45 seconds. Add to slow cooker. Add salt and pepper to slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours, low for 6 hours.

4. Remove chicken and shred or cut into cubes. Add back to slow cooker and stir to combine. Taste chili and season with more salt and pepper as needed. Serve chili with toppings as desired.

3 PRACTICES TO BECOMING A GREAT LISTENER Written by Christine Comaford, seen in Forbes To view this article online visit: www.forbes.com

Are any of these phrases familiar to you?

“YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND.” “HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO REPEAT MYSELF?” “I CAN’T TELL IF YOU’RE DISTRACTED, OR YOU JUST DON’T CARE.” Whether you’re hearing these phrases or saying them, they’re all signs of ineffective listening. And ineffective listening can lead to damaged relationships, inefficient use of time and energy, and silos between key people in an organization. The conventional advice to improving your listening skills ranges from practicing active listening, walking in someone else’s shoes, echoing back what the other person says, and paying attention to nonverbal communication (body language, facial expressions etc.).

STEP 1: BUILD RAPPORT By building rapport, we make the other person feel safe by giving them the experience that we are the “same as” them. The more safety you provide to another person, the more safety you provide for yourself when interacting with them.

This frees up your attention and energy to listen to what the other party is communicating. It also frees up their attention and energy to express what they are truly thinking. Rapport is about caring, not controlling or manipulating. There are many ways to build rapport. Here are the two we suggest everyone start with: • Physical Body Mirroring. By mirroring a person’s posture full body position you step into what it feels like to be them. So for example if someone is leaning back and has his arms crossed, you do the same. Always pause before mirroring so that changing your position isn’t rushed or abrasive. • Keyword And Gesture Backtracking. Mirroring the words a person uses to describe their experience, and the gestures they use too furthers “same as.” If someone says, “I’d like to

NEUROSCIENCE SERIES continued (cont) go the extra mile!”, while slicing the air with their hand—you can respond by gesturing similarly, and backtracking their keywords, “Yes! Let’s go the extra mile.” (Note: this does not mean paraphrasing—which does not build rapport. Using their keywords is important.)

STEP 2: USE THE META MODEL You’ll often hear people use non-specific phrases such as, “I find this task too difficult”. Often, we assume we understand what the person means by “too difficult.” For a software programmer, “too difficult” might mean they have been asked to develop a better version of Microsoft Word by themselves. For you, “too difficult” might mean you need more time to complete a specific task. We all have our biases. Without clarifying what someone means, we can’t be effective in supporting them.

Key to clarifying what someone means, is to use what’s called the Meta Model in neurolinguistics. The Meta Model helps us see the world from the other person’s perspective, rather than our own. The most useful Meta Model questions you can use include: • “What specifically?” • “How specifically?”, and • “In comparison to who/what, specifically?” Given the example we discussed, you could ask the person any of the following questions: • “What specifically is this task, that you find too difficult?” • “How is this task too difficult, specifically?” •“Too difficult in comparison to what, specifically?”

26

GET SMART

NEUROSCIENCE SERIES continued STEP 3: MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES Listening is a two-way street. What we say to someone can make it easier for them to express themselves and feel heard. Key is to first understand the root causes of why ineffective listening and communicating occurs: a lack of the three key emotional experiences of safety, belonging, and mattering.

"SAFETY, BELONGING AND MATTERING ARE ESSENTIAL TO YOUR BRAIN AND ABILITY TO PERFORM AT WORK, AT HOME AND IN LIFE OVERALL."

1. LACK OF SAFETY.

If the persons in communication do not feel safe, they’ll likely be in Critter State. This can lead to defensive behavior, aggressive interactions, and conflict avoidance. Rather than telling each other openly what they mean—a lot of their attention is directed to making sure they aren’t being harmed emotionally (or physically).

2. LACK OF BELONGING.

Without sufficient belonging, people will not care to share what they want to say. And they won’t care to listen to what others want to share either. People want to feel connected to and supported by the people they belong with (colleagues, industry peers, friends, and family).

Safety, belonging and mattering are essential to your brain and your ability to perform at work, at home and in life overall. In every communication, we are subconsciously reinforcing or reaching out for more safety, belonging, and mattering. So the net-net is to truly be a great listener we attempt to step into what it’s like to be the other person. Try the three above steps and you’ll find your interactions will be more fun and more fulfilling too! Christine Comaford is an executive coach and the author of SmartTribes: How Teams Become Brilliant Together.

3. LACK OF MATTERING.

If two people communicating don’t make each other feel they are important, and they matter—it’s difficult to feel heard, understood, and respected. People want to know they count, that they make a difference, and are contributing to the greater good.

BUILD STRENGTH AND STAMINA WITH THIS D0-ANYWHERE, NO EQUIPMENT WORKOUT

High-intensity may be all the rage, but it isn't necessary to go to your edge during every single workout. In fact, there is strong evidence against making HIIT your only form of exercise. By slowing workouts down, you're able to better work on your form, which is huge when it comes to maximizing the benefits of an exercise, said Austin Lopez, CSCS and founder of Ausome Fit. With the focus on technique, you're also less likely to injure yourself, which could sideline you from workouts altogether. This is precisely the reason that Lopez likes to give his clients AMRAPs (as many reps as possible) to do on their own. Clients can go at a pace that feels comfortable to them, focusing on form over speed. Of course, if their form is locked in, an AMRAP session can easily be sped up to max intensity! For a little taste of the kind of at-home workouts Lopez gives his clients, he shared the following with us. Not only does it work the entire body, but it doesn't require a single piece of equipment. Talk about no excuses.

INTERVIEW

MED COUTURE'S

Julie Schragin We sat down and interviewed Julie of Med Couture to learn more about the exciting scrub brand. SS: How did Med Couture evolve into what it is today?

JS: I’ve been at Med Couture for over 8 years.

When I first started, I knew nothing about scrubs. One thing I did notice though, was that there wasn’t any stretch material in the marketplace. We didn’t actually transition to Med Couture until 2015; our company was previously called Peaches. We started to improve our scrubs to create some fashion garments as well as utilitarian.

SS: What is something that makes Med Couture

unique, or stand out, from other scrub companies?

JS: We always try to do a fashion twist to any

line we come out with. You can always expect a little something special in each one of our products. We pay a lot of attention to detail, and we’re really big on fit, fashion, and function.

SS: What would you say has been a milestone with Med Couture?

JS: Launching Med Couture itself has been a big

one. We were one of the first scrub companies to come out with the stretch fabric. People were always nervous to do the contrast and we weren’t. We tend to plow forward with anything that works a little bit differently than what others are doing, and we aren’t afraid to

39

JS: think outside the box. I had been to quite a

few different factories that were using stretch in other clothing styles, and I was shocked that stretch fabric was not already in nurses clothing! Incorporating stretch into our scrubs has been huge for us.

“We tend to plow forward with anything that works a little bit differently than what others are doing, and we aren't afraid to think outside the box.”

SS: Where do you gain your inspiration for your scrubs?

JS: The whole scrub world is becoming saturated

in athletic/athleisure wear, which is why we decided to be different and turn towards a more feminine style. We incorporate feminine touches into our scrubs in several ways: the fit is closer to the body, we create flattering seam lines, double needle top stitch, extra pockets, etc. when we are creating the designs we think, “What would a girl want if she was looking for a feminine line?” and we brainstorm and create based on that. Fabric is also a huge deal for me in our scrubs. I attend a fabric and trim show twice a year in China to observe fabrics and gain suppliers, and it also gives me an opportunity to see what other people are doing in the shows. Booths will have different patches, zippers, swatches, etc. I also have two teenage daughters so I gain inspiration from shopping – it seems like I’m always shopping with those two!

SS: What are some of your favorite features of your lines?

JS: We take great pride in our fit – we spend a

lot of time doing and re-doing samples until we know that we actually perfected the fit. We prefer rather to be late on a deadline rather than get something wrong. We focus a lot on the fit and the trim. I make sure that every single line even in different fabrics goes with one another and match; it’s all about consistency. I also LOVE the fabric that we choose.

“We’re continuing in a feminine direction; there’s too much athleisure wear out there. It’s a trend right now, and we don’t want to follow it. We want our customers to know that when they’re buying Med Couture, they are going to get a great quality garment at a great price, with extreme attention to detail.” 40

SS: Is there anything you want to say to your

“We take great pride in our fit - we spend a lot of time doing and re-doing samples until we know that we actually perfected the fit. ” SS: How do you decipher which fabric is best? JS: I’ll go through a ton of fabric just to

make sure I’m picking the right one. We might have 10 or 15 different swatches and only decide on 1 or 2 that we like. It’s so important to look at the drape, how stretchy (or not stretchy!) the fabric is, if it feels soft or rough against the skin, etc. Comfort and stretch is VERY important to us at Med Couture – we want our scrubs to feel luscious against the skin.

SS: What is new or upcoming for Med Couture? JS: We’re continuing in a feminine direction; there’s too much athleisure wear out there. It’s a trend right now, and we don’t want to follow it. JS: We are so, so thankful for our loyal customers.

We love you! We consider all shapes and sizes when creating our scrubs, and we hope that all women are able to find something in our line. Thank you for all you do!

Written by Paul Jackman, owner of Jackman Works: This 100% reclaimed bench is a piece made for Carolina Shoe who is planning on using this for all sorts of different display purposes. They tell me this bench is going to be more well traveled then me. So this was constructed from a total of about 8 pallets (Red Oak, White Oak, Pine, Poplar, Aspen, Mahogany, Cherry, and Maple) along with some threaded rod thru bolts which were abandoned in a dumpster when the fire protection was being renovated at a local retail store. The pallet slats were left rough on the underside, front, and back to add a really cool texture and also some history to the piece. The threaded rod is mostly aesthetic, but it’ll also add some structure to the piece. Hand engraved “Carolina” and “Built For Work”, finished with 6 coats of lacquer.

Paul wears the Carolina BRUNO (CA5020). A classic looking work boot that is tough and waterproof. It's incredibly reliable, making it the perfect choice to get some work done. (Also available in a composite safety toe.)

THE UNBREAKABLE RECORD Written by our sport experts Dewey Olson and Otis Cunningham

DO: We like to discuss records around here. Record-debate is the cornerstone of sports talk; perhaps

the single most polarizing topic in sports. The idea of “greatest of all time”, whether it is in terms of athleticism or achievement, partisans the language of otherwise open-minded fans, leading us to pull our proverbial scalpels in an effort to split the finest of hairs. So what if we reverse-engineer such a debate to identify the most vulnerable of greatness? Below is my list of the 10 most unbreakable records in sports (in no particular order), and I’ve asked Otis not to select the one that will never be broken, but rather the one that will. Maybe you’ll agree. Maybe not. See what Otis has to say…and then tell us what you think. Submit your thoughts and we just may feature your response in our next edition. Get your scalpel ready…

CAL RIPKEN: CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED STREAK (2,632) CY YOUNG: 511 WINS BY A BASEBALL PITCHER WAYNE GRETZKY: 2,857 CAREER POINTS LOS ANGELES LAKERS: 33 CONSECUTIVE WINS BARRY BONDS: 73 HOME RUNS IN A SINGLE SEASON JOE DIMAGGIO: 56-GAME HITTING STREAK WILT CHAMBERLAIN: 100 POINTS IN A SINGLE BASKETBALL GAME NOLAN RYAN: 7 CAREER NO-HITTERS UCONN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: 111 CONSECUTIVE WINS BILL RUSSELL: 11 BASKETBALL TITLES

45

OC: The thing about unbreakable records is

that they can’t be broken. Gretzky’s points records, DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak, Cy Young’s career wins. These are video game like stats that will seemingly stand forever because the games have evolved in such a way as to prevent the record’s breaking. Sometimes though, the sport evolves in the right way, or a special athlete comes along that is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. It’s been in just the last few years we’ve seen Michael Phelps win 28 Olympic medals and the UConn Women’s basketball team win 111 games in a row. So, what’s the next unbreakable record that will fall? I believe it will be the 1971-1972 Los Angeles Lakers win streak of 33 wins in row, and I’ll tell you why.

THE GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS. I’m kidding. Kind of. It might be the Warriors that break the record, but if not, it’s what they represent that will result in this record falling. The Warriors are just the current, and best, iteration of the NBA super team. Super teams are nothing new for the NBA. We’ve seen them throughout the history of the league, but the "how" has changed. The first super teams were created through quality drafting, then trading for one more great player that put them over the top. This exact scenario happened in 1968 when Wilt Chamberlain demanded a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers, and joined Elgin Baylor and Jerry West on the Los Angeles Lakers. 3 years later, that same team set the record I am talking about today.

“THE THING ABOUT UNBREAKABLE RECORDS IS THAT THEY CAN'T BE BROKEN.”

Over the next 40 years we saw great teams, maybe even super teams, use the drafting and trading model. We even saw the addition of veteran superstars, in the tail end of their career, joining established contenders in the chase of championships. Then, in 2007, the Boston Celtics took it to the next level. Through a series of massive trades, the Celtics acquired perennial all-star, and arguably the league’s best shooter in Ray Allen, and former league MVP Kevin Garnett. This ushered in the “Big 3” era, and set the precedent of what would be needed to compete for championships year after year.

“THROUGH A SERIES OF MASSIVE TRADES, THE CELTICS ACQUIRED PERENNIAL ALL-STAR, AND ARGUABLY THE LEAGUE’S BEST SHOOTER IN RAY ALLEN, AND FORMER LEAGUE MVP KEVIN GARNETT.” The Celtics “Big 3” era ended with an NBA championship, and a couple of Finals appearances. That torch was then immediately passed to the Miami Heat. In the summer of 2010, the Heat shocked the world when they re-signed the face of their franchise, Dwyane Wade, then added superstar Chris Bosh, and the league’s best player, LeBron James, through free agency. These 3 players were all drafted in the top 5 of the 2003 NBA draft. They were also good friends off the court, and this marked another evolution of the super team model. These players took their fates into their own hands. They cast aside long-standing NBA

46

RN MEN

RN MEN: THE UNBREAKABLE continued (cont) unwritten rules like not joining “the enemy”, and not taking less money, for the chance at championships and glory. The Heat went to 4 NBA finals in a row, and won 2 championships. In 2014, LeBron James decided to go back to “The Land”, hoping to bring a championship home to Cleveland, and assembled another “Big 3” to do it. All the while, the Golden State Warriors were assembling a super team of their own. Through some very wise draft picks, the Warriors assembled their own “Big 3” in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. After a few years of experience, and the addition of head coach Steve Kerr, the Warriors met, and defeated, LeBron James’ Cavaliers in the 2015 NBA Finals. The Warriors and Cavaliers met again in 2016, with the Cavaliers pulling off an upset for the ages to win their first NBA title. Then, the unthinkable happened. Through a combination of good management, impeccable timing, and an increased salary cap, the Warriors lured former MVP, and top 3 NBA player, Kevin Durant away from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The “Big 3” model changed to the “Big 4” model and put the league on notice. This “Big 4” cruised through the 2017 playoffs, dropping just a single game on their way to the title.

“THESE PLAYERS TOOK THEIR FATES INTO THEIR OWN HANDS. THEY CAST ASIDE LONGSTANDING NBA UNWRITTEN RULES LIKE NOT JOINING “THE ENEMY”, AND NOT TAKING LESS MONEY, FOR THE CHANCE AT CHAMPIONSHIPS AND GLORY.”

47

This leads us to today. This Warriors team is quite simply the greatest team I have ever seen. It would not surprise me to see them rattle off 34 or more consecutive wins. This team has 4 of the best players in the league in the early stages of their primes. They are unselfish on the court and off. They eschew personal stats, and they take less money, just to keep this team together. It’s a scary precedent that they have set. But, do you know what’s scarier? Eventually, one of the other teams that is chasing the Warriors is going to catch them. Then pass them. I shudder to think what that team looks like.
