NOT ONLY A NURSE
NOT ONLY A NURSE LIFE OUTSIDE THE WING
I did not move to New York, obviously, and I started nursing school the next fall. Nursing school is no joke. No one prepares you for your first nursing exam – no one! But the exams grew on me, and I started to take them on as I do my workouts, or when I am singing in a new place. And in the midst of the challenge, I fell more and more in love with it. I started learning so much about myself, and realizing that I could still be the musician and love giver I knew I always would be.
My life has always been busy and full of new things. In high school I was very involved in sports, music, and school-related activities. That entire time, and even into my first year of college, I was convinced I would pursue music as a career. The plan was to become a music therapist. Ironically, two weeks before I was about to move to New York to pursue that goal, something inside me did not have peace about it. As much as I loved music, I felt that there might be a better way to do what I really wanted to do. That day, I looked back on my first year of college and saw how much I loved science, and how it all made sense so naturally for me. I also started thinking about how I wanted to spend my life giving love to people and letting them know they are not alone. As I pieced this together, I started researching nursing and all of its endless opportunities to continue to give love to so many people. That is all that it took.

"ONE DAY I HOPE TO INCORPORATE MY MUSIC INTO MY PROFESSION SO THAT THEY MAY BE USED TOGETHER TO MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY AND HELP THEM BE HEALTHY." I am now a junior in nursing school, with only three semesters left. I know they will be the most challenging, but they will also be the most rewarding. I am going to be starting as a nurse intern this summer at one of the local hospitals to get more experience before I graduate. One day I hope to incorporate my music into my profession, so that they may be used together and help them be healthy. I love kids, and I have been babysitting since I was a young teen, so pediatric oncology is my dream. This decision was so worth it and I would not trade it for anything!

SPOTLIGHT
HOLY SPIRIT SPOTLIGHT continued
Since Holy Spirit Hospital opened its doors in March of 1963, its physicians, nurses, and staff have provided much needed healthcare services in south central Pennsylvania. Over the last 54 years, Holy Spirit has expanded from a single hospital on the west shore of the Susquehanna River to include almost three dozen locations, including family medicine, pediatric and specialty care practices, urgent care centers, and behavioral health, cancer care, home health, physical therapy, and lab and imaging services. Our providers specialize in breast care, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, endocrinology, general surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynecology, plastic surgery, pulmonary medicine, vascular surgery, wound care, and more. Every day, our providers devote themselves to each patient, doing whatever it takes to provide the best care. In addition to providing comprehensive medical care in our hospital, as well as in our primary care and specialty practices throughout the greater Harrisburg area, Holy Spirit providers reach out to those who find themselves excluded from traditional medical settings because of financial hardships or other barriers. Our Medical Outreach Service, housed in a church in the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg, provides free healthcare for the city’s neediest residents. (For more on the Holy Spirit Medical Outreach program, see page 14). Holy Spirit also offers a financial assistance program to aid patients within the health system who may have difficulty paying their medical bills. We are committed to serving everyone in our community, regardless of their circumstances or ability to pay. In 2014, Holy Spirit Health System affiliated with Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, one of the nation’s largest integrated health service organizations, which provides direct access to Geisinger’s advanced technology, clinical experts,

and financial resources. When Holy Spirit affiliated with Geisinger Health System, we began planning for a trauma center in addition to many other advanced clinical services in south central Pennsylvania to better serve the community. We are actively working toward Level II Trauma Center designation from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation. Last year, we began the construction and renovation work necessary for a Level II Trauma Center at Holy Spirit. The project also will expand the number of treatment rooms in the main emergency department and provide a dedicated and secure behavioral health treatment area. Holy Spirit patients also can enroll in Geisinger’s groundbreaking MyCode® Community Health Initiative, one of the largest research projects of its kind in the world. Using genetic analysis and medical records, MyCode provides participating patients with information about their individual genetic risk factors, allowing for potential earlier treatment of life-threatening diseases or conditions. In a number of cases, the results of MyCode have helped providers detect breast and ovarian cancers, familial hypercholesterolemia that causes early heart attacks and strokes, and other diseases in patients whose family histories did not indicate a need for extensive screening. Being part of a large system like Geisinger provides opportunities for nurses to move to higher-level positions – without leaving behind their seniority or paid time off. Holy Spirit’s dedication to its mission makes our health system a fulfilling place to work, both professionally and personally.

A LOOK AT HOLY SPIRIT'S MEDICAL OUTREACH SERVICE
Written by Interim Director Vanessa Garcia, Holy Spirit Medical Outreach Service
At the heart of our mission at Holy Spirit—A Geisinger Affiliate is the call to provide quality healthcare to disenfranchised and vulnerable people. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than at Christ Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, which houses the Holy Spirit Medical Outreach Service. Medical Outreach is a free clinic, open five days a week, run primarily by nurses and volunteers. The clinic offers nursing assessments, first aid, simple lab tests, health education and coaching to the neediest residents of Harrisburg. In 2015, Medical Outreach recorded more than 15,000 patient visits, proving that you don’t need to look overseas to find deep need. The Holy Spirit Medical Outreach program began serving the Harrisburg community informally 23 years ago when Jody Silliker, RN, a Holy Spirit nurse, took a blood pressure cuff and a first aid kit to a local soup kitchen to see if she could help anyone. As the need for healthcare services in the city became apparent, the growing program found a home at the church in Harrisburg’s Allison Hill neighborhood, where Jody also serves as pastor.
Over the years, Medical Outreach has expanded its services, and now offers English as a Second Language and literacy courses, serves as a hospitality center with a phone and computer, and provides assistance with obtaining other healthrelated items like eyeglasses, over-the-counter medications and hygiene products. The clinic also partners with Christ Lutheran Church’s Health Ministries, which provides prenatal, urgent care, and dental clinics, durable medical equipment, like wheelchairs, crutches, and back braces, baby

We maintain the schedules for the prenatal and dental clinics, screen and authorize eye exams, glasses and prescription medications and more. and enter into relationships with them. We meet them where they are in life, and know that we really made a difference. The nurses at Medical Outreach are the core of everything. Nurses don’t diagnose illness; they assess symptoms, provide health education, and promote healthy living. Our society is only as healthy as our most vulnerable members, and Medical Outreach recognizes the dignity of each person and provides them with the opportunity to receive quality medical care.
PAMELA HARRIS-HAMAN, CNRP, TENDS TO A PREMATURE INFANT.
In 2014, Holy Spirit Health System became a part of Geisinger Health System, joining hands to continue to care for everyone in central Pennsylvania, including the poor and homeless. Kyle Snyder, chief administrative officer at Holy Spirit, explained the connection: “Holy Spirit’s Medical Outreach is a living, breathing example of our purpose and values in action in our community,” he said. “It combines Geisinger’s mission of ‘Caring’ and Holy Spirit’s mission to carry on the healing work of Jesus Christ in a way that reinforces why the two organizations joined hands to become Geisinger-Holy Spirit. In many ways, the clinic also plays an important role in our work on population health through its perinatal program, health education and helping patients understand, manage and treat their chronic illnesses in a non-hospital setting.” I love working at Medical Outreach because it is nursing at its core. I can connect with people

TASTE TEST 17
EAT: FRESH BITES
Strawberry Avocado Salad With Chicken INGREDIENTS:
- ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil - 1 tablespoon golden balsamic vinegar - 1 teaspoon sugar - 1 tablespoon roughly chopped fresh tarragon - ¼ teaspoon kosher salt - ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper - 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts - 6 cups loosely packed fresh spinach - 6-8 large strawberries, hulled and quartered - 1 avocado, peeled, seeded and cut into chunks - 3-4 thinly sliced rings of red onion - ¼ cup feta cheese - 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
Option: Add chia seeds or almonds for extra toppings
DIRECTIONS:
1. Whisk the extra virgin olive oil with the balsamic vinegar, sugar, tarragon, kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper in a small bowl until blended.
2. Place the chicken breasts in a shallow bowl and cover with half of the dressing, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
3. Spray a grill pan or 12-inch non-stick pan with cooking spray and heat to medium high. Place the chicken breasts on the hot grill pan. Cook for 3 minutes then flip the chicken breasts. Cook for another 3 minutes, and turn. Reduce the cooking temperature to medium low and cook the chicken for 20-25 minutes more, turning every 5 minutes or so. Cooking time will depend on the thickness of the chicken, but it will be done when it hits 165 degrees internal temperature. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes then slice into ¼ inch slices.
4. Combine spinach, strawberries and red onion in a bowl. Lightly toss with the remaining dressing. Add the avocado, sliced chicken and top with feta and almond slices. Serve immediately.
Parmesan Crusted Tilapia INGREDIENTS:
- ¾ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese - 2 teaspoons paprika - 1 tablespoon chopped parsley - ¼ teaspoon salt (optional) - 1 tablespoon olive oil - 4 tilapia filets (about 4 oz each) - lemon, cut into wedges
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat the oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with foil. 2. In a shallow bowl, mix together the Parmesan, paprika, parsley and salt. Drizzle the tilapia with the olive oil, then dredge in the cheese mixture, pressing it in lightly with your fingers if necessary. Transfer to the baking sheet.
3. Bake until the fish is opaque in the thickest part, 10-12 minutes. Serve with the lemon slices.

HEADED TOWARDS BURNOUT? HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO Written by Christine Comaford, seen in Forbes To view this article online visit: www.forbes.com As leaders we are expected to be highly present, have clear and consistent insights, maintain significant levels of energy, and stay grounded regardless of circumstances. Yet in today’s world of relentless change this can be challenging. When’s the last time you focused on you? It’s not selfish… it’s necessary.
Here are tools that my executive coaching clients use that have empowered them to avoid burnout.
There’s an infinite amount of work, especially as a leader in your organization. Sometimes, you just need to put the brakes on, because there will always be more work. Your mind is active all day long with some 60,000 separate thoughts each and every day. With all of those thoughts, it’s not surprising that your mind becomes so loud that we lose focus We know we “shouldn’t” get freaked out and anxious, we know staying present will enable us to find better solutions, we know we “should” be getting a good night’s rest to tackle the situation with a fresh mind the next day, but we can’t always get there without help. We’ve been hijacked. Our patterns are in charge. We’re human.
• Look at 10 things in your life/the world that you don’t want/like (tacky wall paper, etc.) and look at each one and say out loud “I do not consent to you” (it’s not OK that they are there). See how that feels in your body (feel free to use emotion wheel).
If you don’t take time to pause and decide to keep going on your current path or change a few things that will make a big difference in your life, you may burn out. It’s okay to take a look and say “Hey! This isn’t working” and implement a few changes that will steer you towards a destination that isn’t painful.
• Reflect on the feelings associated with not consenting/resistance to what is vs consenting/ acknowledging what is. Optimism isn’t universal consent. It’s OK if things aren’t OK with you. Notice what it’s like to let them be not OK and yet acknowledge that they are there without energetically resisting them.
No one has time to process every single blip in their life. We can’t track down the source of every pattern and sometimes it’s not a pattern, it’s just life. We experience burnout when we resist and when we create meaning. So how do we take care of our health and stay mindful of what’s important when life throws us a curve ball?
RELEASE THE RESISTANCE: RESISTANCE VS. ALLOWING
• Now look at the 10 things again. They didn’t disappear even though you didn’t consent to them! Now look at each of the 10 things again. Say “I consent to you” for each (heck, they are there anyway, not much point in resisting this fact— consent isn’t approval, it’s just acknowledgment). See how that feels in your body.

First, think of something you are resisting. Now do the following steps.
First, think of something you are resisting. Now do the following steps.
• Negative Evaluation (three minutes): Say out loud all the things you don’t like, what’s bad about this, what you can’t stand. Really trash it. Notice what are the feelings here? (see emotion chart if helpful) break state (ask non sequitur question/count something/ shake body out)
• Curiosity (three minutes): Now get really curious about this situation. How did it come to be? What is familiar about it? What good things come from it? What are the feelings here? break state • Amazement (three minutes): Now become amazed that it came to be. Wow! This is fascinating! What’s amazing about it? What are the feelings here? break state • Full Appreciation (three minutes): Now honor everything about this situation/state. Yes! This has been so very helpful in order to bring me to the next level. Wow. So much gratitude and appreciation. What are the feelings here? break state • Now do a short Outcome Frame below. Map out a clear vision of your desired state for 15 minutes minimum—bask in it, ask each question in detail.
• What would you like? (something you can create and maintain) • What will having that do for you? (what will you get/benefits) • How will you know when you have it? (criteria/ proof you got it) • When, where, with whom would you like it? (scope and timing) • What of value might you risk or lose? (get present to risk/what might change) • What are your next steps? (get into action) Learn where you are giving your power away. I discussed this in a previous blog on Energetic Weight, answering the 10 questions will give you some great insight into where your power is going.

"THE KEY TO AVOIDING
No matter what happens outside of us, we always get to choose the meaning we make about it inside. Example: Lots of things are changing, lots of short notice client requests and deadlines.
MEANING MAKING OPTION #1:
BURNOUT IS TO VISUALIZE THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE, SET YOUR INTENTIONS AND GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY."
This is so stressful! I am emotionally exhausted by this, it’s all too much! RESULT of meaning = missed deadlines, incomplete work, stress for self and those that have to deal with the missed deadlines/incomplete/low quality work, no fun for anyone and certainly no ease-grace-joy.
Which meaning would you like to make? Our words shape our reality, and meaning making and reframing are key to shape our reality. What if nothing happens to us, it only happens for us to help us grow?
MEANING MAKING OPTION #2:
The key to avoiding burnout is to visualize the person you want to be, set your intentions and get out of your own way.
Yes! Change means movement and growth and a chance to really shine and pace myself. I will show up fully to serve our awesome tribe. How great that I get to tap my awesome brain to become even more clear, find even more solutions as I focus on the outcomes I want to create. RESULT of meaning = empowerment, choice of how to respond vs compulsively react, ease-gracejoy, support of self and others, shine my light, honor my company values, choose my reality.

BEAUTY HACKS 31
7 QUICK BEAUTY TIPS FOR BUSY NURSES
1. Skincare Nothing is as remarkably refreshing as having healthy, glowing, nourished skin. Even though you don’t have time for some serious pampering at a beauty salon, try to moisturize your skin every morning and night. In addition to the regular cleaning, toning, and moisturizing, try including a face mask once in a week. And while you are preparing your face mask, cut some cucumber slices and apply them on your eyes. It will make those eye bags go away. Remember to keep them in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before putting them on your eyes.
2. Freshen Up Your Look Say goodbye to the tired looking face and say hello to your new best friend: concealer. It will give your face a little helping hand to make it look as fresh as possible. Of course, foundation goes great with concealer, so if you still have some extra 15 seconds, sneak in a bit of a foundation as well. Go for the lighter products since they go better with your lifestyle, and they keep the freshness rolling.
3. Hair Care Along with skin care, hair care is a biggie. You might tend to forget it sometimes, but what a difference it makes having great, nourished hair. Besides the regular shampooing and conditioner, try including a weekly hair treatment to provide all the nutrients that your hair needs. You will have amazing, silky, healthy looking hair with very little effort. You might think it’s a tedious process but it couldn’t be easier: apply hair treatment after shampooing, put your hair up and put on a shower cap and then go straight to bed! What could be more amazing than a beauty tip that works its wonders while you sleep? It doesn’t get better than that!

4. Don't Forget About Your Nails Before hopping into giving yourself a quick, simple French mani, you should first start off with some basics. Fix your brittle nails by applying some great cuticle oil to moisturize and strengthen them. To make it work wonders, let it sit in overnight. Apply it before going to bed then pop on some gloves so that you make sure you get the most out of it. The result? You’ll wake up with the softest, healthiest looking nails. And all you need is 30 seconds to apply the oil.
5. Eyebrow Wonders You must have heard it many times: your eyebrows are your face’s natural frame. They give you contrast and expression, so you shouldn’t forget about giving them a little pop. Pluck them once every week and then you'll only have to take care of putting on some eyebrow powder. To choose the right color, go for one or maybe even two tones darker than your natural color.
6. Befriend Your Eye Mask Since sleep is crucial for your wellbeing and your beauty routine, you will find that keeping an eye mask close will do wonders for you. Whenever you have a double shift, try to remember to bring your new best friend with you. It will help you sleep better during breaks and feel like you just had the best nap ever. If it feels like too much for you, you could go for some eye patches that you can hide under your sunglasses.
7. Mascara Nothing hard about applying mascara yet the results are always amazing. Take just one minute every morning and apply it along with your concealer and foundation and you’re good to go! You will look and feel amazing all day long with just as little as this.

DEFINING
EATING DISORDERS What Every Healthcare Provider Needs to Know Written by Jess Willard, LCSW-C It’s estimated that as many as 20 million females and 10 million males in the United States are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder. Affecting both physical and mental health, eating disorders are complex illnesses with biological, genetic, psychological, social and developmental roots. Eating disorders are the most fatal of all psychiatric illnesses and their symptoms are often overlooked by professionals, misunderstood by families, and underdiagnosed by clinicians. This means many individuals suffering with an eating disorder are not getting the treatment they need and deserve. The Renfrew Center, the country’s first residential eating disorder treatment facility with 18 locations across the country, knows there is never a single cause for the development of an eating disorder. Rather, it’s a perfect storm of many factors. The three most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
37
ANOREXIA is self-imposed starvation. Individuals with anorexia are often profoundly dissatisfied with their body image and usually express a strong desire to lose weight. One of the key features of this disorder is denial. Although obsessed with food, they continually deny their hunger and are not able to recognize that they are physically and emotionally fragile. BULIMIA is the repeated cycle of out-of-control eating followed by some form of purging. The purging associated with bulimia may be selfinduced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics, or obsessive exercising. Individuals with bulimia are preoccupied with their shape, weight, and body image as a source of self-esteem. BINGE EATING DISORDER is uncontrolled eating or bingeing followed by periods of guilt and depression. A binge is marked by the consumption of large amounts of food, sometimes accompanied by a pressured, “frenzied” feeling. Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder does not involve purging, excessive exercise or other compensatory behaviors.
"AFFECTING BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH, EATING DISORDERS ARE COMPLEX ILLNESSES WITH BIOLOGICAL, GENETIC, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL ROOTS."

HEALTH
HEALTH: DEFINING EATING DISORDERS continued WARNING SIGNS OF AN EATING DISORDER It’s important for medical professionals to understand the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder in order to diagnose and treat their patients. Often, an individual with an eating disorder will not disclose that they are suffering; some even go to extreme lengths to hide their eating disorder. It’s also important to note that an individual may have symptoms of more than one diagnostic category and/or may not fully meet the diagnostic criteria for one specific disorder. Some common warning signs: • Obsession around food, weight and shape. • Distorted or negative self-image. • Withdrawal from normal social activities, including meals with others. • Unusual food rituals including cutting food into small pieces, eating slowly, eating unusual food combinations. • Changes in mood including irritability, mood swings, flat mood, restlessness.
"EATING DISORDERS ARE THE MOST FATAL OF ALL PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESSES AND THEIR SYMPTOMS ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED BY PROFESSIONALS, MISUNDERSTOOD BY FAMILIES, AND UNDERDIAGNOSED BY CLINICIANS ."
GOOD NEWS, THERE IS HELP! The Renfrew Center’s experienced staff members will help guide patients and families through the treatment process, from admissions to aftercare, with ease and care. While it is a process that takes time and dedication, it is important to remember that knowing the signs and symptoms and providing early intervention can give an individual the opportunity to fully recover and lead a successful, eating disorder free life.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jess Willard, LCSW-C is the Professional Relations Representative for The Renfrew Centers of Baltimore and Bethesda and has over seven years of experience in the field. GET TO KNOW
Healing Hands Healing Hands is passionate about the healers they outfit with their beautiful medical scrubs. We took the opportunity to sit down with the founder of the brand, Bansi Lakhani (BL), their body designer, Suki (SU), their surface designer, Nikita (NI), and their CEO, Sid (SI) to learn more about their inspiration and company.
41
SS: Can you tell me the story behind how Healing Hands became what it is today?
BL: I had a major heart attack back in 1997, and
I was in the hospital. I was in very bad shape and thought I was going to die. After surgery, I slowly started to gain back my senses, and I became aware of what the healers who were taking care of me were wearing. Their scrubs were stiff, boxy, and felt like a cardboard material. They only wore an ugly green or a stark white color. An idea came to me: “What if we made beautiful clothing for the healers to wear, clothing with better fit, material, colors, and more?” I feel that the healers were already doing such an excellent job, but I believed that if they were happier about their clothing, their happiness would translate into even better patient care, and I believe patients would even begin to heal faster. I started talking to the chief of the hospital about revamping the whole hospital! I wanted to update everything; the gowns, bedsheets, flooring, walls, etc!
BL: (cont) want to get into a laundering business,
so I shelved the idea for many years. I was not sure how to market this beautiful idea that I had. In 2008, I went to the URA (Uniform Retailers Association) show in Reno, NV. I saw that some other scrub companies had already beat me to the idea and had executed it well. I decided that it was time to take this idea off the shelf and begin to grow it.
SS: Healing Hands is a unique name – how did you come up with this?
BL: In my heart, I truly feel that nurses are the true
healers. I am only referring to them as nurses for your benefit to explain – in my vocabulary, they are healers, angels, or healing angels. The doctors do a great deal as far as surgery and diagnosing patients, but for the days during and after, the healers are the ones who truly take care of us. Therefore, I named this division “Healing Hands”.
SS: Why is Healing Hands unique from other scrub
“I FEEL THAT THE HEALERS WERE ALREADY DOING SUCH AN EXCELLENT JOB, BUT I BELIEVED THAT IF THEY WERE HAPPIER ABOUT THEIR CLOTHING, THEIR HAPPINESS WOULD TRANSLATE INTO EVEN BETTER PATIENT CARE, AND I BELIEVE PATIENTS WOULD EVEN BEGIN TO HEAL FASTER.” I think that hospitals should not be gloomy, they should be a fun place to aid in the recovery of the patients with cheery designs, so the patients feel great and not so gloomy. However, the hospital informed me that they do not invest in uniforms, and had a laundry service that provided and laundered the uniforms. I am a creative person and did not
companies?
BL: When you look at our products, you can see
and feel the difference in our execution, fit, style, textiles, price point, etc. I believe that we are different and better in our own unique way. Our latest collection HH360 is very yummy – the fabric and styling is inspired by Athleisure. The minute you put it on, I promise you that you will not want to take it off! Our healers can wear it at their jobs, home, malls, gym, or truly anywhere they want to; it is that comfortable and stylish. All of our fabrics in every collection are comfortable and very easy to take care of. I myself am a creative person, and I am very technical when it comes to the fabrics. In order to achieve the right amount of softness, feel, weight, stretch, drape, moisture wicking properties…one has to know the types of yarns to use, dyeing and finishing processes, weight control, and other technical processes of fabric. There are so many things that go into the design of Healing Hands scrubs. We make the collections and brainstorm our ideas with a group of core healers. My core healers are a group of nurses who share their needs, likes,

even the smallest of details such as the proper placement of a cell-phone pocket. When someone is passionate about their work as well as their wardrobe, I bring them on board. I feel, “Why should the angels be left out of the designing process? After all, they are the ones whom I want to see happy and comfortable!”
SS: What do you feel has been a major stepping stone or milestone in your career with Healing Hands?
BL: The first collection we came out with
was too much ready-to-wear inspired, and soon we learned the dos and don’ts. We launched our Purple Label collection, which became a big hit instantly and was well received throughout the country amongst retailers as well as healers. We are always thinking of new ideas and fabrications. We recently came up with HH360, which just shipped at the beginning of this year. It has also become an instant success with great response. The Facebook comments, emails, and the comments from our focus groups were so inspiring that I was almost in tears listening to the healers describe how they felt when they first wore them. Even at the URA show, when we first presented HH360, many retailers came by personally to hug and congratulate me with their encouraging words, such as “There is nothing like this in the market!” That made us feel we have hit a home run! Now this gives us a really big challenge – how are we going to top 360?
SS: What has inspired you throughout your journey with Healing Hands?
BL: It keeps encouraging me to continue innovating and perfecting the products. Just even from the comments I’m receiving from the healing angels on Facebook, and the good words the
43
BL: (cont) nurses say, it inspires me to do more and more for them.
SS: Scrubs are a great way for nurses to express
their personalities while in the workplace. Why do you think expressing oneself at work (through scrubs) is important? How do you convey this through your scrubs?
BL: People have to feel good about themselves
and clothing is like their second skin. You should feel comfortable and great about what you are wearing and how you look. You should feel confident! So through fashion, fabrication, color, styling, etc, we make the healing angels feel good. When they feel good, they show their happiness all around them. They are already angels and healers, they have a knack for making other people feel good. When they feel good about themselves, it multiplies even more in the patient care.
“PEOPLE HAVE TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES AND CLOTHING IS LIKE THEIR SECOND SKIN.” SS: Is there any message you would like us to pass along to our healthcare professionals directly from you?
BL: I love you all, you guys do such a wonderful
job! I encourage you to write to us about whatever is on your mind. Whatever we can do to improve, or if you are unhappy about something, please write us! We do not get offended; and we take every message seriously. The good, the bad, the ugly, we want it all. We are just so thankful for all that you healing angels do.
SS: Where do you gain inspiration for your designs? SU: We are based in New York City, in the heart of the garment industry. I can walk down any avenue in Manhattan and see fashion happening. Athletic wear is very big right now and inspires me greatly. NI: New York is the place, it is so easy to be
inspired here. We also have a lot of resources – we go to stores, departments, online, etc. We get inspired by one thing and then we put a completely different twist on it.
SS: What is something that is important to consider
while trying to improve your health with nutrition?
MO: Eat more fruit and veggies, and drink more
water! More than half of Americans today don’t get enough vegetables in their diet. Vegetables have so many nutrients that the body needs and many people think they are eating enough, but most aren’t.
BL: There is inspiration all around us. If you are
observant, which we all are, you could be in the grocery store, subway, really anywhere and find inspiration.
SS: What are some of your favorite features of your scrub lines?
SU: Fabrication. I think that when we look at
what’s out in the scrub market, I look at them and touch them, and their fabrics do not even compare to what we are doing here. I think Bansi is the most creative in fabric, and he knows how to manipulate yarns to make it one of the best things we’ve ever felt. Bansi wants personal communication with the healers, and to send positive messages to them. It is all about learning and growing to improve the quality of what our healing angels want and like.
NI: The inner beauty, the small details. You do
not want to go overboard with a design and detail, but little touches are special. Bansi came up with the idea in HH360 of quotes in the fabric to make the healers feel special. Only she sees inside the clothing – quotes such as “caring is healing” “thank you for being a healer” or “nurses are healing angels,” or “you are blessed with healing hands.” We put details whether thickness of thread, stitches per inch, etc…we take care of minor details that no one thinks of.
SS: What are some of your favorite nutrition-rich foods?
MO: Chia seeds are great - I usually make them into a “pudding” with yogurt or milk. Peanut butter is also a nutrient-rich food and is great on fruit or veggies, like apples and celery. Cruciferous vegetables (vegetables in the broccoli and cabbage family) are high in essential nutrients like Vitamin C and fiber, and are also being researched for cancer prevention.

INTERVIEW
INTERVIEW: HEALING HANDS continued SS: Sid, you are now the CEO of Healing Hands. How did this come to fruition?
SI: I cannot fully explain my role without first
attributing our great success to my father. He is the founder of Healing Hands, it is his dream child. With a seed in his mind, and then turning it into a business in 2009, he has created something very unique. He has brought a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to the company, as he is also the CEO of Krazy Kat Sportswear. That is our fashion division which caters to major apparel retailers across the country. He is not interested in the money, he is truly interested in creating the best product. He is not motivated by profit, which is why he is so good. He does not like to focus on the operations, logistics, or finance of the company. This is where I come in. It is a great thing to have opposite skill sets, because we are a wonderful balance.
SI: (cont) the business, and we were not set up to meet those demands. As a private label apparel company, we didn’t have any inventory. This business is quite complex when it comes to inventory management and distribution needs. My role became very active very quickly. I began to fine tune Healing Hands and take on more and more responsibility. I love traveling to meet our customers, even our small accounts or “mom and pop” accounts. Our customers are so knowledgeable and I get to hear what the retailers are interested in, what we can improve on, and what they feel is missing from the market. I also very much enjoy the operations angle. There has been tremendous growth from 2009 until now, and I am very proud of the Healing Hands team. I truly love my career, and I love having a multi-faceted role. I wake up every day feeling energized to meet the challenges and adventures that the day will bring.
SS: What is next for Healing Hands? BL: We have a surprise coming for our healers at the end of June – keep your eyes open!
My grandfather was very ill back in 2007, and he wanted me to quit my finance job to work solely for Krazy Kat. I was hesitant at first about joining the fashion industry, but did respect his wishes, and luckily we ended up in this great uniform industry. I started by living overseas in 2008 to learn all about weaving plants, fabric mills, the dyeing process, etc. Once Healing Hands began to take off in 2010, there were a lot of demands on the operations side of

NFL SAFETY DEBATE
Discussed by our sport experts Dewey Olson and Otis Cunningham
OC: There is no doubt that the overall violent nature of the NFL has grown exponentially over the last few decades. The advancements in supplements, training regimens, and starting children at a younger age have developed these athletes into borderline freaks. Each and every one of them. So you take these large, incredibly fast, and exceedingly strong men and run them into each other 50+ times a game, and bad things are going to happen. Does that mean that we need to put an end to this sport? No, and here’s why. Who am I to tell Aaron Rodgers, or J.J. Watt that the game is just too violent, and they can’t play it anymore? You don’t think they know that? You don’t think that they think about that getting out of bed every Monday morning, or every time they take an ice bath. This is their choice. They can stop any time they want, and we’re seeing young players opt out more and more. Calvin Johnson, Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch. These are all elite players who hung up their cleats early in the last couple of years. It’s up to the individual to decide how much risk they are willing to take for the compensation that they receive. Now, I’m not completely calloused or inhumane. We will reach a breaking point. We get to a time where great athletes opt for safer sports, which will lead to less competitive play, and ultimately the fan base will leave. Remember the replacement players of the 1987 strike? I’m not going to shell out $150 a ticket to watch that. So, it is incumbent on us, on the league, on the teams, to figure out a way to make the game safer. Good strides have been made.
OC: (cont.) Protecting defenseless receivers.
Eliminating chop blocks. Shortening kickoffs and banning the wedge block. These are good starts, but it is not enough. We need better equipment, especially helmets.
“WHO AM I TO TELL AARON RODGERS, OR J.J WATT THAT THE GAME IS JUST TOO VIOLENT, AND THEY CAN'T PLAY IT ANYMORE?” We need better concussion testing. We need innovative ideas. Continued tweaking and updating of the rules. We are pushing these athletes and their bodies to the absolute limits, and we need to do the same with technology and creativity. I’m not advocating that we carve the fun, or the reasons that we watch, out of the game. We are a culture that enjoys violence and marvels at talent and athleticism. We see that in the growth of MMA. We just need to ensure that we are protecting the thing that makes the game what it is. The players.
DO: There is an innate desire buried within the
sports-fan psyche to watch and be near excessive violence. We replay the most devastating tackles, spend hundreds of pay-per-view dollars for the prospect of a heavy-weight knockout, and we continue to allow hockey enforcers to face-off and throw punches – seemingly for our mere

DO: (cont) I am aware that the NFL is a billion+
But to justify the violence with the rationalization that “they know what they are getting into” is little more than covering our eyes to pretend we don’t see. It takes as a basic premise that they, and we, know all there is to know. NFL players 30 years ago took these same “calculated risks”, though it was not until the last decade that the toll of a concussed generation began to take hold. What will science uncover in the decades to come? How will the damage of near superhumans colliding with the force of a 40 mph car crash – dozens of times per game – come to bear? The reality is that we do not know.
At the end of the day I am a football fan. I do not want this to end yet. But week to week I find myself agonizing on behalf of these larger-than-life characters cast dangerously onto an unsafe stage so that you and I can live vicariously through their heroics. And in these moments of self-awareness I wonder just how much longer this can continue. At what point do we sheath the sword and spare the tigers?
decides the action can stop. It is a throwback to Colosseum days. Quarterbacks are the gladiators of yesteryear, captivating our imagination from the safety of the stadium seats while slaying mighty beasts. And like they, our NFL heroes opt in.
Biological and physiological advancements allow us now to train our gladiators in such a way that create speed and power the human body is not designed to withstand. Monstrous men volley skull-rattling blows that walk the edge of assault – and perhaps there is an obligation on the part of the masses to know when enough is enough. If you are unsure as to the extent to which we remain naïve, ask Junior Seau’s next of kin to help inform you.

dollar industry, and that money is a force rivaled only by the league’s most aggressive hitters. It is unrealistic to expect the NFL to come to, or even hedge toward, an end. But the fan base needs to be a more informed audience. We need to understand the impact of impact and allow it to color our viewing experience. Better helmets, softer turf, and enhanced pads address the symptoms but not the disease.

T im Wisniewski, Nursing Assistant TW: (cont) caring for others. It makes me feel good
to put a smile on someone’s face. With the Marines Corps, I didn’t realize how much I would be serving others. I helped younger Marines when they would join to teach tactics and helped them learn the ropes. I got to know them on a personal level; I would ask how things are at home, ask about their lives instead of just asking about things pertaining to the Marines.
SS: I understand that at one point you considered a career in law enforcement – was there a turning point or experience that led you to focus on healthcare?
TW: My interest in law enforcement was pre-

Can you tell me a little bit about your mindset back when you were making the decision to join the Marines? Were you consciously driven by a desire to serve?
TW: The concept of brotherhood and changing
the world really appealed to me. And come on, what 18 year old doesn't want to shoot guns and be with people? The responsible side of me said this would be a good career path if I decided to have this career, that it would be a smart decision. I felt a sense of patriotic duty. My caring for people derived earlier from that, in large part due to my family. My family taught me a sense of serving and

Marine. I went to a criminal justice program and enrolled in the early-to-college program. I wasn’t interested in the paperwork; I was more interested in truly trying to help people. I think it is very noble to serve, it just wasn’t for me. It wasn’t until my first appointment where I bunked with 2 Navy Corpsmen. My buddy asked me to quiz him with the medical field terminology. My mom had also sent me anatomy and medical textbooks to keep me busy. I did live CLS (combat life savers)...we would use pigs that were put under sedation and inflict injuries that we would see on the battlefield, and we would go in and stop the massive hemorrhaging, loss of limb, collapsed lungs, etc., which led me to become CLS certified. I’ve always been intrigued and fascinated with the human body, the way we are able to adapt and how our minds work. Talking to my Corpsmen about all of that and learning it on my own, I knew I wanted to go into the medical field.

back on it now, I definitely think it impacted my decision. Whenever I needed her, she was always there. It kind of sucked when I was little and wanted to skip school, because she knew I wasn’t actually sick – haha! She is knowledgeable, comforting, and supportive to her family. It’s the caring instinct that she has that impacts others and me so greatly.

nursing?
I came home and did 4 to 6 weeks of lounging and enjoying summer. My aunt Jen is in Human Resources at the hospital that I work at, and she told me about an opportunity as a nursing assistant. I really get to have the incredible experience of being a nurse. I work on the floor with the patients with whatever they need. My coworkers put a lot of confidence in me to reattach equipment, assist nurses, etc. When talking to nurses, I am learning so much, and it is incredible. I work on the orthopedic/rehabilitation wing, so we also deal a lot with disabilities. My day-to-day kind of looks like this: I get a report from nurses on other patients. I take all vital signs, assess patients, make sure things aren’t out of place, that the patients are comfortable, etc. At the pediatric wing, I also make sure the patient’s diapers are dry, and ask parents if they need anything. I assist the nurses with anything they need help with, whether it is taking someone to therapy, or another task. When I have time I stock the closets and cabinet as well. I love being able to help nurses with whatever they need. Some patients cannot be alone so we are in patient's rooms sometimes for 4 to 8 hours at a time.
SS: What is the most rewarding part of being a nurse?
TW: I honestly would say it’s seeing the
patients get better and being there with them through the process, watching them walk out the door in better shape than they came in, and making parents and kids happy.

ONE THING I KNOW FOR SURE... Written by Men's Fashion Expert, Noah Maxwell
SETTINGS THAT USED TO REQUIRE A SUIT AND TIE HAVE LARGELY BECOME LESS FORMAL, AT LEAST IN TERMS OF WHAT YOU WEAR. Jeans with slim-fit button-down shirts are now the uniform of workplaces and get-togethers. The millennial generation has brought its wardrobe sensibilities to the forefront and we are all thanking them for it. While many of us still have a soft spot for the feel of a good suit, I think we all appreciate our newfound comfort.

... IS THAT THE IDEA OF DRESS DENIM WILL BE AROUND FOR A WHILE.
HERE’S HOW TO PULL OFF THIS LOOK WHILE STILL LOOKING CLASSY:
Check WWW.UNTUCKIT.COM for trend right, form-fitting button-downs.
For a higher-end fashion look, you’ll need to pair your jeans with carefully selected shoes. We recommend a low profile dress oxford in a shade of brown (with matching belt, of course). Tuck in your white button-down and throw a tailored blazer on top. Suit jackets may seem too dressy, but the juxtaposition actually wears well. You can’t miss with navy blue. If your style is more casual, scrap the blazer, trade in your dress oxfords for white-soled sneakers - like Vans or even Chuck Taylors – and untuck that shirt. As always, fit is king. You can find many shirts that are now cut to be worn untucked, with tailoring through the chest and waist.
