The Misery Epidemic And What To Do About It Dottie DeHart

A

s citizens of one of the most affluent societies, you’d think Americans would be happy. Yet too many of us are anything but. We’re stressed and overworked. Unhealthy. Self-destructive. We’re disconnected from those we (presumably) love. We consume and consume, buying up not just food but expensive homes, cars, vacations, and high-tech “toys.” Yet nothing fills the hole. If you’re skeptical, let the numbers speak for themselves: • 48 percent of first-time marriages, 67 percent of second marriages, and 73 percent of third marriages end in divorce. • 75 percent of doctor visits are stress-related. • 43 million people abuse alcohol or prescription drugs,

or use illegal drugs. • Over 38,000 people commit suicide each year and more than 400,000 are treated for self-inflicted injuries. • 40 million people suffer from anxiety. • More than 100 million people are obese. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Thomas Strawser, author of Spiritual Engineering, says our nation, the so-called “land of plenty,” is mired in a misery epidemic. Strawser shares reasons as to why we are so miserable. We try to buy happiness. We fill the HOLE with status and stuff Think about it: we work ourselves to the bone so that we can buy “the” house, “the” car, and all the other luxuries we think will make us happy. But instead of “arriving,” we end up overworked and overstressed, always feeling that we’re less than, and with strained family relationships — in a word, miserable, not happy and whole. “We spend our lives trying to fill that inner emptiness with money, possessions, and social status,” Strawser points out. “We may find temporary satisfaction when we get that new smartphone, car, or promotion, but this often fades, and soon we are out chasing more of the same.” We sacrifice our own best interests on the altar of approval and accolades Our actions are often influenced by what we believe will please and impress others. This may begin in childhood as we struggle to please our parents, and later, our friends as peer pressure takes hold. And we don’t grow out of it. We may even make life’s most important decisions — from choosing a career to settling down with a life partner to buying the “right” house in the “right” neighborhood — because we want the approval of our peer group or society in general. “Maybe the hunger for approval drives you to go to medical school and become a doctor when the truth is you’d be far more Spring - Summer 2015

fulfilled working as a park ranger,” Strawser notes. “Sure, you have the money you need to acquire the window dressings of a ‘successful’ life — but if you’re not living a life that’s true to who you are, you’re going to be miserable. “The need for approval doesn’t manifest only in the big things,” he adds. “Even small behaviors, like gossiping about a friend, can stem from the desire to impress others. But there’s always a price to pay for abandoning your integrity.” We depend on other people to fill our void Let’s say you got married thinking your life together would be a mostly effortless partnership, with lots of romance and togetherness — or that the other person would “make you feel complete” and life would be great. But your spouse spends weekends hanging out with her friends or retreats to his shed to do woodworking instead of spending time with you. You get upset. Arguments and recriminations fly. Or you just withdraw, settling for isolated mediocrity. Or you find someone else who gives you attention and understanding, and start the same cycle again. Perhaps you see your children as a measurement of your own success. Then you’re disappointed when they don’t make the honor roll or the varsity team and become park rangers instead of physicians. “Too often we look to other people — our partners, our children, our friends — for happiness, fulfillment, entertainment, and the solutions to our problems,” observes Strawser. “This always leads to misery. We must learn that other people can enhance our happiness but can never create it. All healthy relationships — romantic, parental, and otherwise — must begin with a healthy self-relationship. And that, in turn, must begin with a healthy spiritual relationship. Trying to shortcut the process produces chaos and turmoil.”

The Next Kill May B e A

s our population continues to age, the ability of a new category of applications for mobile phones to track the health of patients could save lives. In the world of smartphone apps, this development may even lead to a shift from the overriding focus of the social aspect of phone apps to something more serious. Two Silicon Valley startup companies, AliveCor and Vital Connect, are banking on just that. Both recently received a green light and seal of approval from the Food and Drug Administration for their new mobile apps designed to monitor a patient’s health status from home. This FDA approval may lead to a big step forward in the digital health industry. AliveCor’s app essentially transforms a smartphone into a portable electrocardiogram. It is designed to detect atrial fibrillation, a form of cardiac arrhythmia that affects about 1 in 4 adults older than 40. If the device detects an abnormality, the information can be sent to a cardiologist for review, allowing the doctor to intervene before the onset of a stroke or another life-threatening event. The app is currently available to consumers and can be downloaded free, but it requires the purchase of a universal Spring - Summer 2015

attachment plate. Vital Connect received FDA clearance for the HealthPatch MD, which patients can adhere to specific areas on their chest to track such things as heart rate, pulse variability, respiratory rate and skin temperature. If the person using the app opts in, his physician will be immediately notified if the numbers hit or exceed set thresholds. It was created with patients with chronic conditions in mind, for short-term monitoring after a patient is discharged. It will also enable home health care professionals to monitor those patients with more serious risks on a 24-hour basis. Patients need a prescription to buy the device, which is expected to be available in the United States by the end of the year. It is currently available in the European Union and Canada. Both companies are part of a burgeoning remote wireless health monitoring trade aimed at saving lives by prompting care that can prevent fatal outcomes, as well as managing health in a more efficient way. It is an approach that also makes it easier for patients and doctors to track care and treatment and eliminates unnecessary visits to a doctor’s office or hospital. Though this particular field has a ways to go before it can be considered mainstream, there are many mobile apps currently available that address any number of health needs. Some are free; some require a subscription service or purchase. Here are a couple of them:

Breast Cancer Diagnosis Guide Created by Breastcancer.org, it allows breast cancer patients to enter and track details of their disease and treatment, from the size of the tumor to the presence or absence of estrogen receptors. Doctors have found it useful in helping patients grapple with the flood of information they get when first diagnosed, as well as in staying on top of details as they consult various doctors, from surgeons to radiation oncologists. Wireless Pulse Oximeter Made by iHealth Lab Inc. for people with trouble sleeping, this mobile app can record blood oxygen levels during the night, helping a doctor determine whether a person has sleep apnea. To use it, a patient goes to bed wearing a fingertip sensor, which wirelessly links to the phone. Perhaps the greatest utility among mobile health apps is in assisting doctors by providing hand-held databases of drugs and diseases and sophisticated monitors. The following are but a few that do that:

ocrates Inc. claims that nearly half of U.S. physicians routinely rely on it. It is similar to the mammoth Physicians’ Desk Reference book, providing doctors, wherever they might be, with the latest on basic information about drugs, the right dosing for adults and children, and warnings about harmful interactions. Isabel Created by Isabel Healthcare, it is a helpful guide for doctors in reaching diagnoses. The doctor enters symptoms, and the app lists possible diagnoses, as well as any medications that could cause the symptoms.

Epocrates This is considered one of the oldest and most established medical mobile apps. Ep-

ResolutionMD It allows doctors to look at X-rays and other images on a smartphone or tablet as soon as images are available, no matter the doctor’s location (as long as there’s cell service or Wi-Fi). It will be interesting to see whether this vision of mobile health comes to pass, but it would be nice if they would invest a little more time on some of the medical symptoms and conditions caused by our obsession with smartphones. A 2011-12 study in Hong Kong, where sales of smartphones are among the highest in the world, revealed musculoskeletal pain or discomfort in different parts of the body from the use of this electronic device, including neck, shoulder, wrist and finger pain. According to a report in Boston magazine, psychologists are studying other medical phenomena caused by smartphone use. One is nomophobia, the fear of being out of contact without one’s mobile phone. Another is called phantom vibration syndrome. It’s incorrectly feeling or hearing your cellphone going off. ∆

The Misery — From Pg. 14 nation that celebrates rugged individualism, it’s no surprise that most of us live our lives believing that putting Number One first is a winning strategy in the search for happiness. But the truth is, selfcenteredness (which is very different from healthy self-love) is often the source of the

problem and not the solution. Decisions based solely on “what’s in it for me?” almost always lead to misery and mediocre relationships. “Being self-centered makes you jealous and suspicious, inflates your ego, creates a false sense of entitlement, and 32

CellScope Oto Developed by CellScope Inc., this app allows a smartphone to become an otoscope, the instrument doctors use to look into the ear. With this app and the accompanying optical device, a doctor can record video of a child’s ear, for example, and then show the images to family members to explain the diagnosis. It can also help eliminate an unnecessary use of antibiotics.

hances are you’ve spent more than a few sleepless nights worrying about money: Have I saved enough for retirement? How will we pay for the kids’ college? Do I need life insurance, and if so, how much? These questions and many more constantly rattle through the minds of many Americans, and the worry they create has only gotten worse since the slow economy left in its wake. Author John Vento says the best way to ease your money worries is to improve your overall financial picture. Oh, and if you’re relying on the person who got you to this point (hint: that would be you) to get you out, you’re making a big mistake. You need a good financial planner. Spring - Summer 2015

“I think most people fall into two camps,” says CPA John Vento, author of the book Financial Independence (Getting to Point X): An Advisor’s Guide to Comprehensive Wealth Management. “They either think they don’t have enough money to need a financial planner — or they’re wealthy and think they can get by on advice from their stockbroker or tax attorney. But both groups are wrong. “Everyone needs a trusted advisor to guide them during good times and bad,” he adds. “Someone whose primary goal will be to help you achieve your long-term financial objectives. This trusted advisor should be a financial planner who can analyze your financial status and assist you in setting up and implementing a financial program to achieve your ultimate goal of financial independence.” “Financial independence — the point at which we can stop working for our money and our money starts working for us — is the financial ideal that we all seek,” says Vento. “With the right plan and a commitment to making the necessary life changes, anyone can reach their Point X. Of course, selecting the right trusted advisor to guide you will be one of the most important decisions you make in your journey to financial independence.” Here are some tips from Vento on how to get the most out of working with a financial planner: Develop a speed-dial relationship It’s pretty simple: The better your financial advisor knows you, the more effective she’ll be at managing your wealth. You should see your financial planner as a trusted advisor and feel comfortable sharing personal information with her. She needs to have a clear picture of your financial goals and dreams. “If you don’t already have a financial planner, the best place to start is with your friends and family,” Vento shares. “Ask them if they can recommend a trusted advisor with whom they have worked. But keep in mind that even if an advisor is perfect on Spring - Summer 2015

paper, you’ll also need to ‘click’ in person to some extent. Otherwise, you won’t feel as comfortable sharing personal details. Ideally, to get the most out of the relationship, you’ll want to meet with your advisor multiple times a year, especially if your financial situation or outlook changes.” Know what to ask Especially when choosing a financial planner, there’s no such thing as being too prepared for a meeting. It’s important to ask the right questions so that you can rest assured that your advisor is qualified and ideally suited to meet your needs. At minimum, Vento recommends seeking answers to the following: • What are this advisor’s qualifications, areas of expertise, and approach to risk taking? Does this line up with my needs and comfort levels? • Are this advisor’s services fee-based, hourly, or based on commission? • To what standard of care will this advisor be held: fiduciary or suitability? • Will the financial decision making be customized to me, or does the advisor take a one-size-fits-all approach? • Does this advisor offer tax advisory service that will be integrated into my overall financial planning? • Will I be dealing directly with this advisor throughout my relationship with the firm, or will I sometimes see a junior member of the team? “Of course, this list isn’t exhaustive,” Vento qualifies. “The more research and preparation you can do before choosing a financial planner for yourself, the better.” Know what qualifications to look for There are more than 100 designations, or credentials, in the financial services industry, and more are being created each year. Commonly recognized examples include Certified Financial PlannersTM, Certified Public Accountants, chartered financial analysts, stockbrokers, insurance agents, and tax attorneys. It’s very important to understand the basic differences be- 33

Teaching Kids Th

C

hildren can learn meaningful lessons about money at a very early age. In fact, by about age 3, they’re listening and learning from us whether we’re aware of it or not. When we take our kids to the grocery store, to the bank or clothes shopping, even if we don’t include them in the transactions, they’re picking up signals and attitudes about money and how we handle it. Why not turn these passive experiences into active learning opportunities? A 4-year old is already aware that money has value; it can be used to buy something special. So now would be a perfect time to help him or her understand that there are limits to what money can buy, and also that she may have to make a choice. There are some fun ways to do this. Start with a simple piggy bank At 4, your kids are probably proficient counters, so help them learn more about the value of money by first putting any coins they get into a piggy bank. Periodically take the coins out so they can count them. At the same time, you can help them identify what they are, and what each is worth, i.e., 10 pennies make a dime, 5 nickels make a quarter. Once they’ve accumulated enough to buy something — even a dollar or two — explain to them that different things cost different amounts of money. Then, when you go to the store together, you can look at price tags and discuss what that means. Let them select an item that they can afford, pay for it, get a receipt and keep any change to put back in the piggy bank. They’ll probably be proud of the successful transaction. To keep this lesson going, you can do some comparison shopping and let your child handle small purchases whenever appropriate. Introduce a fun way to save for something special Saving is another money lesson kids can learn at a young age. Start now to help your kids understand that they may have to wait to buy the things they want. For instance, the next time your kids have their hearts set on something, talk with them about how much it costs and how to save money Spring - Summer 2015

until they have enough to buy it. You might have your kids decorate a special jar for that savings goal and put all money received in that jar. Think how excited they’ll be when they finally go with you to make the purchase. Consider an allowance at about age five An allowance gives kids a chance to have money of their own on a regular basis and learn to manage it. Ages 5 to 8 is about the right time to start. There are different points of view on whether to tie an allowance to chores. Whatever you decide, be very clear about their responsibilities and if you expect them to pay for certain things with their own money. How much you give is up to you, but it should be enough so that your kids can actually use it in a meaningful way, making spending and saving decisions. With a young child, I’d keep the amount small

and make it weekly. You can change the parameters as your child gets older, increasing the amount and time frame and perhaps the responsibilities that go along with the allowance. The most important thing with an allowance is to let kids make their own spending decisions — and learn from their own mistakes. Don’t jump immediately to the rescue if they misspend. Rather, help them work through the situation and make better decisions the next time. Enjoy every milestone As your kids get older, you can help them through other money milestones like making a first big purchase, buying a car and saving for college. These real-life experiences will give you the chance to teach your kids important lessons and give them the chance to take pride in their accomplishments. Most importantly, you’ll be setting them on a solid path to financial independence. ∆

Here are seven signs that you’re on the right path: Let it flare The legs have it this season. Whether it’s cropped culottes, washed jeans, flared jumpsuits or high-waisted trousers, the wide-leg pants are striding into the 70s spotlight. They’re perfect to wear with all the chunky platforms. Go boho with tunics Whether they’ve got lots of flower power or embroidered and crocheted with Moroccan designs, the “peasant” tops are proving that this is the top to top it all off this spring and summer. Wear them in a gauzy explosion of color in loose flowing cotton, or make them work for you at work when they are more like longer shirts, all tailored and belted. Skirt the issue The wrap skirt was a 70s fashion hit, thanks to designer diva Diane Von Furstenberg, and it’s once again twirling around in trendy circles. But skirts this season are also going long and longer. From midi to maxis, there really is something for everyone. Swing in the trenches OK, so the trench coat didn’t exactly THE MISERY — From Pg. 18 cultivates a victim mentality — none of which leads to happiness,” notes Strawser. “Acting lovingly, openly, and generously toward others, even when we don’t want to, feels so much better than being selfish, self-righteous, or self-centered. Healthy love — and the healthy relationships it creates — must replace self-centeredness if we’re to enjoy peace and happiness.” We accept “surfaces” as reality Social media has made this tendency far worse. originate in the 70s, but in new loose and swingy shapes and lightweight colorful suede, it’s the perfect coat/jacket for chilly spring days and nights. Worn over cropped pants and platform shoes, it’s a great segue way into warmer weather. Print it Nothing says 70s like giant paisleys, graphic flowers, sweet ginghams and abstract blocks of color, and, of course, psychedelic rainbow watercolors, patchwork and tie-dyes. Add at least one of these new prints to your wardrobe for a fresh look. The wedge platform There are lots of names for the footwear popular this season — call them clogs, mules, wedges or platforms — they come in all heights and in all kinds of designs. From the tall and sublime to the flat and fabulous, these shoes are typical of the 70s, when the wooden heel ruled. The fringed handbag Whether it’s a hobo satchel or a crossbody leather bag, a handbag trimmed with this bohemian detail will instantly update your wardrobe. And yes, you too can get hippie, even if you’re on the fringe of this fashion trend. ∆

and cute new Schnauzer. What you don’t document are the credit card bill that arrived after your trip or the huge fight with your spouse that resulted from it, your child’s temper tantrum when he didn’t get the game system he wanted from Santa, or your tears of frustration when you cleaned up your pet’s urine for the umpteenth time. “Everybody does this,” Strawser says. “But usually, when we scroll down social media feeds, click through Pinterest boards, and skim blog posts, we don’t consciously register that we’re seeing carefully edited snapshots of other people’s lives. We judge our ‘insides’ 36

FINANCIAL PLANNER— From Pg. 22 tween these designations so that you can make sure that the members of your wealth management team are the most qualified and suited to meet your needs. “Before meeting with financial planners (and I do recommend interviewing several before hiring someone), you should do some research about their backgrounds, including their education and other relevant credentials,” Vento urges. “A good place to start would be visiting their websites, and then the licensing board website for whatever credentials they hold.” Think of it as an investment, not an expense Yes, it’s easy to look at the fee or commission your financial planner charges and think to yourself, Is this really worth it? I really don’t need yet another expense in my life. Quash that line of thought, urges Vento. Yes, the services of a financial professional might cost you some out-ofpocket money up front. But that’s not the last you’ll see of that cash. Over time, the value of a trusted financial planner will far outweigh the cost. “Don’t view accounting and legal fees as an expense,” Vento reiterates. “If the professional services provided are not saving you many times the cost of the fee, then it’s time to look for a new advisor. Not only can financial professionals help you build your wealth, they can also prevent you from making costly decisions.” Know the difference between suitability and fiduciary Technical jargon like “suitability” and “fiduciary” is often a turn-off to those who aren’t in the industry. After all, you think, I shouldn’t have to know terms like that! I’m hiring a professional so I don’t have to concern myself with those things. However, taking a little time to learn the difference between those two terms in particular can save you money and determine the kind of relationship you have with your advisor. “The suitability standard requires a client to receive recommendations that are suitable to his particular circumstances, 45

Pants Styles For Spring Sharon Mosley

P

ants are our partners in fashion. We wear them as professionals. We wear them to play. And we wear them to party. And this spring, there are more and more ways to celebrate that bottom half of our wardrobes. Here are some of spring’s best trends: The wide legs have it As the newest star of the season, fuller pants lead the fashion pack. Think culottes, gauchos and palazzo styles. (The latter are great for warm-weather parties.) If you have long legs, you’re in for a treat. The high-waist wide-leg trousers so popular this year will give you even more height, and are great worn with flats. For shorter women, wide-leg pants can be a bit tricky. Try a more natural or low-waist look, and wear them with wedge platforms. When wearing wider legs, there is a fashion rule of thumb — fuller bottoms look best with a fitted top; the same “rule” applies to skinny pants — keep the fullness on top. While the rules are always made to be broken, this one generally holds true. Crop pants get flare Shorter pants that hit below the knee are always a favorite at this

time of year. Cropped pants are a great alternative to shorts for many of us. This season, the shorter pants are updated in fuller silhouettes, some pleated and flared. Others have slits or zippers up the side. Steer clear of baggy cargo pants. A word to the wise — see rule above. And note: Cuffs will only make you look even shorter. The shoes you wear with short pants are critical. Let a full-length mirror be your judge. The drape has all the drama Once in a while, the fashion gods and goddesses will cause some excitement with a trend that has all the spectacle of a showstopper that turns up in all the photo layouts for the season. The “Fez” pant is the latest interpretation of the harem pant made popular years ago by rap star M.C. Hammer. This is another pant silhouette, however, that can be treacherous — i.e. mistaken for a Halloween costume — and unless you are highly skilled at putting your wardrobe together, you might not want to touch this one! Instead, opt for an easy, slouchy pant that doesn’t have quite so much drama. THE MISERY— From Pg. 32 by other people’s ‘outsides.’ We may feel envy for all they seem to have that we don’t. Or instead of accepting (and even embracing) the very normal flaws and imperfections in our lives, we use them to beat ourselves up and feel ‘less than.’” We blame other people and things for our circumstances It’s not like there’s a shortage of likely culprits. For instance: “The government is taking away our rights!” “Big business is screwing the little guy!” “I’d be doing fine if it weren’t for this crappy economy.” “My boss is out to get me.” “I’ve always been treated like the black sheep of the family.” And so on. “Seeing yourself as a victim and blamSpring - Summer 2015

Jog with it The ath-leisure trend may have us all wearing our yoga pants to work, but if you’re really wanting to work out your bottom half this spring, try pulling on a pair of jogger-style pants. Fitted at the ankle, these pants are the new update on the knit leggings that many of us love to wear. Print it From vintage florals to graphic dots and tie-dyes, the patterned pant never seems to go away, especially for spring. It’s a great vacation look in cropped versions, and a great cocktail look in flowing chiffon. Once again, keep the top simple and solid. And if you haven’t already, it’s definitely time to ditch the animal-printed pants. Keep the classics Don’t worry; the tailored trousers and skinny jeans that you already have in your closet are here to stay. But remember, pants — no matter what the silhouette — look only as good as they fit on you. Find the brand that best works for you and buy several pairs. Then you’ll never regret looking in the rear-view mirror. ∆

ing others for your problems is counterproductive,” Strawser says. “Whether you realize it or not, you’re painting yourself as weak and giving away all of your control to other people and entities. Even if you didn’t choose for something bad to happen to you, like being laid off from your job, you can choose how you react. “Yes, it’s okay to feel hurt, pain, and disappointment when things don’t go your way,” he adds. “But also realize that many things happen to you as a result of a chain of decisions you made. This is actually an empowering thought. You can change your choices and change the results. Once you can truly own your role in your circumstances, you can finally begin to shape the kind of life you really want to live.”

We neglect our physical health From America’s growing obesity epidemic, to our love affair with junk food, to our tendency to stay on the couch, to our rampant use of alcohol and other substances, it’s clear that many Americans don’t take good physical care of ourselves. The ironic part is, most of the unhealthy choices that ultimately contribute to our misery are geared toward short-term gratification. “Yes, restaurant portion sizes are huge,” says Strawser. “Yes, we have sedentary jobs. Yes, it’s hard to find time to cook and exercise. All of these contribute to our health problems. But these lifestyle practices often indicate a lack of self-love. If we truly loved ourselves, we wouldn’t feel the need to self-medicate with food or alcohol or drugs. Healthy self-love leads to realizing that our physical health is 40

W

hen you need to make an impression, nothing disguises pounds or adds height and general allure like the little black dress.

Fashion expert Paula Reed, author of the book “Style Clinic,” offers some suggestions on choosing the perfect little black dress to flatter your figure’s best attributes. Have a great neck and shoulders? A wide V-backed dress could be a stunning alternative to those strapless or offthe-shoulder staples, says Reed. Focusing the attention at the nape of your neck will have major impact. Put long hair up to maximize your style advantage. Boyish figure? You’re one of the few who can get away with a simple shift. belt or seaming at the waist. A sleeveless dress that’s slightly cut away at the shoulder line will also strengthen your look. You can also get away with ruffles and frills, which are figure-killers on just about any other body type. Large bust? A V-neck will balance your curves. Make sure there’s good support built in. You also need to keep the overall silhouette under control and avoid billowing fabrics. No bust? Reed recommends choosing a pleated, frilled, beaded or corseted bodice that will define your top half. Voluptuous curves with a waist? A corseted dress is likely to look delicious on you, she says. Don’t be afraid to bare a shoulder. A wide V-neck that skims your collarbone is enough. And, if you want to disguise hips, too, keep the fabric fluid and the skirt silhouette soft. Voluptuous curves and no waist? A tailored A-line is the most flattering shape, according to Reed. Go for a length just below the knee to get as much height as possible. And, once again, drawing the eye up Little black dress by Thea.

to an exposed shoulder is a great balancing trick. If you don’t want to bare a shoulder, a great piece of jewelry at the neckline, like a brooch or necklace, will be effective. Great legs?

A mini-length dress is not necessarily the most versatile LBD. A hem that hits your knee with a flippy little detail or a floaty fabric that plays when you move (such as chiffon) is way more seductive.

THE MISERY— From Pg. 37 intertwined with the health of our emotions and spirit.” We fill our minds with garbage The mind can be our best friend or our worst enemy. It can consume us with worry, lead us to regrettable decisions, drain and diminish us, and convince us that we must accept misery or a second-rate life. It doesn’t help that we allow our minds to stagnate on a meaningless diet of reality TV, Internet surfing, and social media. “But if you begin to replace your input of mental garbage with something more productive, like a television program or book that causes you to actually think, you might be surprised by the effect on your mood,” says Strawser. “In addition, seek out healthy, thoughtprovoking discussions with others. Engage with the world around you. Look for evidence when forming opinions and making decisions. And when your mind does need to relax, recognize that new practices may give you better results. Overcome your fear and lethargy and actually try a little meditation instead of checking out with television, for instance.” We’re out of touch with our spiritual selves We may go to church on Sunday morning and call that “spirituality.” However, it is not. Or we may completely disparage Spring - Summer 2015

Full hips? A figure-skimming A-line with a plunging neckline will draw the eye up and give you good camouflage. Choose a fabric that moves. Anything too stiff will undermine your best effort. And remember... finding the perfect little black dress means having a “onehit-wonder” always ready to party at a moment’s notice. ∆

the spiritual side of life, saying that we don’t believe in it or need it. According to Strawser, of course you can live without spirituality — but he believes that you’ll be missing a dimension of living that is indispensable to creating the best quality of life. “In my mind, your spiritual life refers to your authentic connection and response to your inner spirit guide, the God within,” he explains. “That might be God, Allah, Buddha, the Universe, Nature, or Intuition — but the identity of your Higher Power is not what I’m concerned with here. I simply want to make the point that accessing and nourishing your spirituality can enhance your life by providing you with fulfillment and a way to manage worry, fear, and stress. Plus, having a connection to the Higher Power of your choice sets your values, principles, and purpose in life — the essential attributes that define who we really are as human beings. “Once you begin examining and recalibrating what drives you, accepting who you are, and lovingly caring for yourself, each part of you will begin to perform its intended function.” “You’ll begin to develop into the best version of yourself. And finally, you’ll be in a position to develop productive relationships and make decisions that honor your best interests,” concludes Strawser. ∆

Beware of certain red flags Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. Honesty isn’t universal, people sometimes take advantage of others for personal gain, and corners are cut for convenience’s sake. That being the case, it’s a good idea to keep your eyes open for certain red flags when choosing and working with a financial planner. For example, does your advisor make decisions that are customized to you, or does he take a onesize-fits-all approach with all of his clients? If it’s the latter, watch out: A 30-year-old’s goals and risk tolerance are much different from those of a 70-year-old. “Overall, listen to your intuition,” Vento recommends. “If your advisor keeps trying to talk you into a financial move that you don’t feel comfortable with, it may be time to move on or continue your search. You need to completely trust a professional’s ability and vision for your financial future.” Be open to taking advice Once you have found a qualified financial planner whom you like and trust, give serious consideration to taking her advice. Simply agreeing that her recommendations are sound isn’t enough; you must implement them if you want to maximize your financial future. “First, let me be clear — I’m not saying you should never question your financial planner,” Vento says. “It’s important to raise questions and objections if you have them, and you shouldn’t do anything you’re not comfortable with. However, I can’t tell you how many people I’ve worked with who have ‘lost’ thou- 56

FINANCIAL PLANNER— From Pg. 33 but under it, financial professionals aren’t required to put his best interests first or to disclose conflicts of interest,” Vento explains. “The fiduciary standard is more rigorous and requires financial professionals to always act in the client’s best interests and to disclose conflicts of interest. I definitely recommend working with an advisor who is held to the fiduciary standard, as it will maximize your earnings. It will also help you to trust your advisor more fully.”

Color has a psychological effect. It can influence your feelings. So wether you want to create peace and harmony or high energy in your home, choose colors wisely. Some colors in large amounts may have just the opposite effect. See which of the following colors reflect your personality. Green Associated with life itself, and represents newness, naivete and birth. Green also has a whimsical, fun nature and is seen as talkative and stimulating to conversation. Orange Orange is warming and uplifting, as in the softer energy found in the last rays of sunset. It relates to our entire life cycle as the color of fall, symbolic of the end of life.

Black Black is the “forever” color -- forever night, forever faithful, forever formal. All About Buffets Mary Carol Garrity

B

uffets are an ideal addition to any room in your home for serving or decorating purposes. Here are some tips on how to pick and use them. Buffets make a beautiful anchor These attractive pieces can add style to almost any room. Along with bookcases, secretaries and hutches, I frequently use buffets as that stalwart wooden piece that gives a room structure and strength. Plus, they give the bonus of additional storage space. Top the buffet with great accents, surround it with artwork, and your room is done. Buffets are versatile and hardworking Buffets make an ideal place to put a flat-screen TV, hoisting the screen to just the right height so it’s easy to see. Or if you prefer to hang your TV on the wall, slide a buffet up underneath it, so the TV is not visually floating on the wall. Whether the TV is sitting on top of the buffet or mounted on the wall behind it, include the TV in your overall display on the buffet. Work in a few accents on the tabletop that balance out the screen, and incorporate the

screen into a montage of artwork. You’ll be amazed by how this helps the TV melt into the background when it’s not in use. You can also put a buffet in your entry, topped with a large mirror. Or put one against an empty wall in your living room to serve as a bar when you entertain. If you have a boring hallway that needs some life, put a buffet against one of the walls, top it with an accent lamp and create a grid of great artwork behind it. Maybe some great photos of your family? Pick the right buffet for your space Use these guidelines to help you select the right piece: How are you going to use the buffet? Will it be in your dining room providing a convenient and elegant spot for serving food and beverages? Will it be a stage for ever changing seasonal displays? Or will you use it in another room, mostly for decorative purposes? Does the style suit your home? Do you want a sleek, modern buffet, or something more traditional? Do you prefer informal pieces, like a buffet that looks like it was taken from an old farmhouse, or one FINANCIAL PLANNER— From Pg. 56 a good fit for you is an important first step. But according to Vento, the road doesn’t end with that advisor. It’s important to build a team of financial professionals whose specific areas of expertise can help you achieve your goals. You might also want to work with a Certified Public Accountant to handle your taxes, a stockbroker to invest on your behalf, an insurance agent, and maybe a tax attorney or estate attorney. Questions to Ask When Hiring a Financial Planner When you’re in the process of choosing a financial planner, here are ten important questions to consider: 1. If this advisor was recommended by a friend or family member, do you have Spring - Summer 2015

that’s very high-style? No matter what you pick, make sure the piece harmonizes with the other furnishings in the room and in your home. How much do you want to invest in your buffet? Like most furniture, buffets come in a wide range of prices and the quality can vary. Do you want a buffet you can enjoy for five to 10 years? Or do you want one that you can hand down as a family heirloom? Once you determine the lifespan of the piece, you’ll have a better feel for whether you want something trendy or timeless, budget or built to last a lifetime. What size fits your space? Because buffets can be space hogs, it’s important to measure the length of the spot where you’d like to put the buffet to be sure it will be a good fit. Another dimension to keep in mind is the depth of the buffet, especially if it will be in a hallway. Make sure it’s not so deep you can’t get around it easily. If your buffet will be in a dining room, make sure you get one that is 3 to 4 inches taller than your dining table. It’s important to have different heights for visual variation in a room. ∆ confidence in the person who referred you? 2. What education and credentials does this advisor hold to make him or her qualified to advise you? (The advisor’s website is a good place to find this information. You can also check with the licensing board for whatever credentials the advisor holds.) 3. What is the compensation model for the advice and service: fee-based, hourly, or commission? (Fee-based is a percentage of your money under management; hourly is based on time charges; and commission is transaction-based.) 4. What are the financial advisor’s areas of expertise and does this line up well with your needs? 5. What standard of care will this advisor be held to: fiduciary or suitability? 90

especially in excess, is bad for us. It’s terrible for our teeth, destroys our mood, makes us gain weight and severely alters our overall

blood chemistry. We have to admit that sugar

simply ruins our health. Naturally, we con-

joying sugar means an extra few pounds around my midsection, then I guess that’s okay, right? Some of us think that, maybe, if I just watch my sugar intake a little and not go too crazy, then I’ll be able to enjoy the good of sugar and, maybe, the bad of sugar won’t really affect me too much. When it comes to sugar, most of us are willing to take the good with the bad, because we want to have our cake and eat it too. By now, most of us have been bombarded by endless antisugar messages. There are always new studies on how sugar adversely affects our health, our kids’ attention spans, and the obesity problem that seems to be getting worse by the year. No matter what anti-sugar messages we read, see and hear, we simply refuse to give it up. However, there is a new and powerful message coming out from the scientific community about sugar, and whether it’s time for us to give it up. Sugar is making you ugly! Excess sugar in our bodies is now being revealed as one of the most damaging elements to our appearance. As it turns out, these sweet little sugar molecules are leading a double life. After they pass over our taste buds and give us that amazing sugar buzz, these appealing friends of ours change their personalities and go on a seek-and-destroy mission. In a process called glycation, excess sugar in our bloodstream in reality attacks the proteins throughout our bodies. As a matter of fact, these sugar molecules attach themselves to proteins — much like a parasite. Once bonding happens, that particular protein becomes glycated; or, in other words, sick. A recently glycated protein becomes misshapen, hardened, does not function correctly and excretes exotoxins that affect surrounding proteins. After the glycation process has run its course, the protein is referred to as an Advanced Glycation End Product, or A.G.E. for short. A real-world example of glycation is the browning and hardening process when placing a piece of bread in the toaster. This is where the ugly part comes in. Spring - Summer 2015

Our skin is essentially one giant protein suit that covers us and protects all of our inner workings from the outside world. Most people are aware that the main protein in human skin is collagen, the proteins of which are very long lasting. They have a half-life of approximately 15 years and are not immune to the effects of glycation. Just like other proteins, when collagen becomes glycated, that protein is now considered an A.G.E. Like others, collagen proteins become misshapen, hardened, brittle and excrete exotoxins. While you can’t see the effects of most proteins in your body when they become glycated, the effects of glycation on skin proteins becomes very evident. Essentially, every visible sign we attribute to aging skin — including wrinkles, fine lines, discoloration, sagging, uneven skin tones, stress, loss of elasticity, etc — can all be attributed to the process of glycation. Glycation becomes more evident in your appearance when sugar molecules attack the surface proteins on the fine capillaries of your skin. This process causes your capillaries to leak, causing what we recognize as spider veins. The same process can happen in the under-eye area, which we recognize as dark circles. The most demoralizing aspect of glycation is the fact that once a protein has become glycated, or is now considered an A.G.E., the damage is permanent. Glycation is an additive effect and probably begins as soon as we’re born, affecting us throughout our lifetime. If you’ve read or have been told that environmental factors like the sun, wind, weather and pollution age our skin the most, that would be correct, but it’s not the whole story. Glycation is the chemical process which enables these environmental factors to damage our skin. For instance, when radiation from the sun strikes and penetrates our skin, it accelerates the glycation process. It seems a little unfair. In most cases, if I give up a certain vice, then my body, given enough time, will generally recover. If I start eating 72 66

he best way to treat tennis

DON’T OVERDO IT Technically, tennis elbow is an inflammation (tendonitis) of the tendon where it attaches to the muscles in the forearm that extend your fingers and wrist. Find it; feel it. I’ll wait. Tennis elbow is not limited to tennis players. Golfers and luggage handlers can get it too. It’s an overuse problem. That means you’re doing more with your muscles than your body is prepared for: hitting too many golf or tennis balls, or lifting too much weight.

The stress of these repeated moves causes degenerative changes (little tears) in the tendon. That produces local swelling and pain and — ouch! — next thing you know you’re Spring - Summer 2015

here are countless prospective entrepreneurs trying to put their ideas into action by launching a business. Here are some insights into what makes or breaks a business in today’s market. You can’t build a business like a hobby project

Entrepreneurship should never be a casual endeavor. Building a thriving business in today’s market means devoting yourself fully to the mission you intend to accomplish via the company. Setting your business aside for any length of time can lead it down a slippery slope you may not be able to crawl back up from. Keep yourself organized; set clear goals you can accomplish, and dedicate yourself

to making sure your ideas come to fruition. Wrong sequence ends in business failure One of the biggest hurdles to business growth is the lack of a detailed planning system. No matter how big your idea is, expecting overnight success can cloud you to the practical considerations that can quickly grow larger than your ability to deal with them. Move your business forward one step at a time, and more importantly, know where you’re going before you try to get there. Advertising is naked without PR Flashy ads are no substitute for a wellthought out communications strategy. In the age of information, every business needs a sensible way to spread its ideas and brand to clients and consumers ready to buy. An idea is useless without a suitable voice to present it to the world. Build your advertisement strategy around the people best suited to get you to the next step of your objective. Never say NO to growth In today’s market, you can’t afford to miss the opportunities that can get you from one step to the next. While defining a plan for growth and future investment is necessary to guide your business decisions, nothing should ever be set in stone.

with the effort they put into the business’s success. While numbers need to be your first concern when it comes to sustaining yourself and your ideas in the market, make sure you measure your success by more than just a bottom line. As you grow IT, IT will grow you Don’t get tunnel vision when it comes to everyday business. In today’s business world, every connection you make can be a game-changing opportunity. Never walk away from the chance to shake hands with a potential partner no matter their value to you and your business at the moment. Grow your network every chance you get. Nothing will grow you more than growing your dreams While it’s important to consider all of your decisions through a filter of practicality, you should never be convinced you can’t achieve what you’ve set out to do. Businesses never fail because a dream is wrong; they fail because they choose the wrong path to achieve it. Remember that the more work you put into getting somewhere only makes the achievement more meaningful in the end.

The difference between wealth and income is how many people you benefit All the growth in the world means little if you do nothing to benefit those who helped you get there. Your team and periphery support network need to be included in the rewards in direct correlation

Competition slows everything down If your definition of progress includes hurting other companies along the way, you’re not on the fastest lane to success. Although the market environment may appear inherently competitive at first glance, a collaborative perspective on business can make everyone’s ideas a reality faster than they could through isolation and bitter fights for market share. Look at your competitors as potential partners and find a way forward for everyone involved. ∆

SUGAR — From Pg. 66 a better diet, I’ll most likely lose weight and be healthier. If I give up smoking, in most cases, my lungs, heart and blood pressure can return to normal. Nevertheless, once your proteins have been glycated, you’re

pretty much out of luck; the damage has been done. Well, almost. You see, if you go online right now and do a search on the process of glycation, you will read much of what

Spring - Summer 2015

you’ve read here, including the fact that once a protein has become an A.G.E., it’s irreversible. However, recent studies have shown some promising discoveries that may allow us to not only help prevent further damage from glycation, but also help affected proteins return to their normal state, function and appearance! Powerful, new and topically applied serums have shown the remarkable ability to help block the glycation process and break the bond between the sugar molecules and the protein affected. In a recent clinical trial conducted in France,

500 women were treated with a serum derived from a naturally occurring plant extract. At the end of the 60-day trial, the 500 women appeared an average of 8 to 10 years younger. No doubt that a whole new category of anti-glycation treatments will soon be available in the marketplace. Based on projections, anti-glycation products will become as popular as the anti-oxidants, sunscreens and moisturizers of today. For a detailed description of how glycation ages your skin and how you can stop the process, go to www.controlyourage.com. ∆

PREVENTING TENNIS— From Pg. 68 standing in line at a Walgreen store, waiting for your fix. The good news is, tennis elbow, like any tendinitis, comes and goes. The body is fully capable of healing itself But preventing an overuse injury is winning in straight sets.

a grip leads to muscle fatigue. Too large a grip makes for a weaker stroke. Avoid high string tension and low racket flexibility, which transmit too much force directly to your forearm muscles.

GET FIT Tennis alone will not make you strong or flexible or develop your endurance. There’s too much starting and stopping and too little steady exertion, especially when every third shot flies over the fence. This is where self-care comes into play. Condition yourself with a variety of aerobic activities — biking, swimming, fast walking, running, whatever mix you like — at least 3-5 times a week, at least 30 minutes per session. Have you seen Rafael Nadal in action? Believe me, he didn’t get that gorgeous body practicing his drop shot. TAKE LESSONS Poor playing technique is a big cause of tennis elbow. Punching at the ball, a lame serve, a weak backhand and lack of followthrough all increase the stress on your muscles and tendons. Pay now, or pay later. FIT YOUR RACQUET Get a pro to check your grip size. There should be about a finger’s width separating the tip of your middle finger from the crease at the base of your thumb. Too small

STRETCH AND STRENGTHEN Strong flexible forearms are a huge help in preventing tennis elbow. Do the following, for a big net gain: SQUEEZE: grip down on a squeezable ball with your arm extended out in front of you. Squeeze... and hold briefly, working up to 40-60 times. You can do this while walking, while waiting, anytime you have a free hand. CURL: hold onto a 2-to-5 pound weight, and rest that forearm on a table, with the weighted hand hanging over the edge, palm down. Slowly flex your wrist, working up to 15-to 20 times. Turn your hand over so the palm faces down, and flex some more. Switch arms, and repeat. Even if you don’t have a two-handed backhand, you want to develop your muscles evenly. STRETCH: to warm up your forearm, extend your arm in front of you, palms down. Use your other hand to flex your wrist and gently push against your fingers as they are pointing to the sky. Hold for 10-20 seconds; repeat 10 times. Then flex your wrist so that your fingers are pointing toward the floor. Hold for 10-20 seconds; repeat 10 times. Switch arms, and begin again. ∆

Pick a shady spot poolside or on the beach and, with an icy glass of lemon infused water in hand, relax and watch the Atlantic waves sweeping the sandy shoreline. Acqualina offers several dining venues where you can enjoy anything from a light sandwich to an elegant dinner. Start your day with their generous breakfast buffet, a lavish spread of hot and cold selections, freshly baked pastries, smoothies, fruit juices, and various themed dishes. On weekends, the spread also includes seafood, tuna with black sesame seeds, and filet mignon. For a gourmet dinner head to AQ, the hotel’s elegant restaurant. It is located in a large oval-shaped room with high ceilings, modern chandeliers and huge windows overlooking the pools and beach. Highlights of the modern American menu include a Corvina ceviche, three mushroom risotto with truffle oil, and seared to perfection beef tenderloin. For fine Italian dining treat yourself to Il Mulino, the famous New York restaurant, located right off the hotel’s lobby. A stay at the resort would not be complete without some pampering at the Acqualina Spa by ESPA, an exquisite 20,000 square foot sanctuary overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Indulge in a therapeutic massage or rejuvenating facial. The hallmark of the resort is its attentive and professional staff. They are friendly and eager to help answering guest requests with only one word: “Absolutely.” Life at the Acqualina is so alluring that two thirds of the towering building is occupied by residences, and two more buildings are under construction to accommodate the high demand. For hotel reservations and information call 305-918-8000 or visit www.acqualinaresort.com. ∆ Spring - Summer 2015

One of the resort’s top attractions is the Roosevelt Baths & Spa, a modern facility located a few steps away from the main building. Get pampered with a massage or facial and be sure to experience the traditional mineral bath. The bathing ritual takes place in an individual room where you soak for 40 minutes in a deep tub filled with naturally effervescent, champagnelike waters. The resort is also home to Putnam’s, a casual restaurant where you can enjoy tasty and beautifully presented dishes. Order the day boat scallops served with a bacon and marmalade sauce, and the savory duck breast accompanied by a rum soaked fruit compote. Don’t miss their popular Sunday brunch buffet in Arches, an elegant glass walled dining room. The Gideon Putnam Resort also offers over 12,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, perfect for weddings and corporate events. Undoubtedly, the resort’s main draw is its location in the Saratoga Spa State Park. The 2,300-acre park is unique for the numerous mineral springs that bubble throughout. The waters, believed to have healing properties, were extensively used for medicinal purposes during the Gilded Age. Guests came to the resort for long periods of time and were prescribed specific regimens of bathing and drinking to alleviate a wide range of conditions. Local residents still frequent the park’s fountains to fill containers with mineral water. To better understand the allure of Saratoga Springs and the healing powers of its waters, take a nature tour with Trent Millet, a local expert with vast knowledge of the medicinal content and benefits of most springs in the area. During the two hour hike through the park you will see and taste several springs, each with its own characteristic taste and odor. Most springs are propelled to the surface by natural underground gas. Summer is Saratoga Springs’ main season when the city brims with excitement and numerous events. The top 90 86
