here is a growing concern in business and society about burnout. Though burnout is connected to prolonged periods of stress, experts tell us there are distinct differences between the two.

Stress, they say, generally involves too much — too
many demands on you physically and psychologically. Burnout, we’re told, is about not enough. It is charac-

feeling empty, devoid of motivation and beyond caring

and not seeing any hope of positive change in one’s situation. The scary thing is that unlike the case with stress, people don’t always notice burnout when it happens. If you feel you are slipping into burnout, Helpguide.org suggests starting to deal with it with the “three R” approach: Recognize. Watch for the warning signs. Reverse. Try to undo the damage of stress by managing it and seeking support. Resilience. Build your resilience by making your physical and emotional health of paramount importance. According to a 2013 report by Gallup, a mere 30 percent of people in America feel engaged at work. Helpguide.org says there are currently more than 1,000 journal articles dealing with some aspect of burnout published every year as researchers grapple with the underlying causes of burnout, getting the upper hand and developing effective solutions. In the past, studies were conducted primarily by psychologists and focused on workers in a narrow range of high-stress occupations, such as social workers. Today the research and perspective have broadened greatly. The New York Times published an opinion piece co-authored by the head of a prominent business consulting firm and by a professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, titled “Why You Hate Work.” Their thesis was that excessive demands are leading to burnout everywhere as these demands for our time increasingly exceed our capacity. At the crux of it is the relentless stress created by increased demands caused, in large part, by digital technology. Interestingly, their focus was on not just rankand-file employees but middle managers, as well as the most senior executives. In a study conducted by the Harvard Medical School that took a random sample of 72 senior management leaders, it was learned that nearly all reported at least some signs of burnout. To explore the subject of burnout further, the authors partnered with the Harvard Business Review last fall and surveyed more than 12,000 employees across a wide September - October 2014
range of companies and industries. What they discovered was that employees are more satisfied and productive when four core needs are met: Physical. The opportunity to regularly recharge and renew at work. Emotional. Feeling valued and appreciated for their contribution. Mental. Being allowed the opportunity to really focus on their most important tasks. Spiritual. Being connected to a higher purpose at work, when what they are doing is given a bigger meaning. The more effective an organization is in supporting employees in meeting these core needs the more engaged, loyal and satisfied employees are and the lower their perceived level of stress. The researchers discovered that when even one of these core needs is met, compared with none, employee performance improves, and so does the bottom line. Studies also continue to reaffirm the value of intermittent rest during the workday. A Fox News report pointed out a small study conducted in Iowa, in which teachers and support staff at a school for children with behavioral problems began practicing meditation exercises to deal with work-related stress and burnout. After practicing 20 minutes of meditation twice a day for four months, stress levels among participants fell significantly, while the stress levels of school staffers who did not participate in the study continued to rise. Participants also felt less depressed and less emotionally exhausted. In a pilot program conducted several years ago involving 150 accountants during the middle of the busy tax season — when productivity is traditionally measured by how many hours are put in — a group of these employees was given a mandatory short break after every 90-minute period of uninterrupted, highly focused work and one hourlong break in the late afternoon, when the tendency to fall into a slump is highest. With higher focus, these employees ended up getting more work done in less time and leaving work earlier 28 12

Find Your After Losing Y

t’s easy to lose sight of yourself as an individual when you’re in a relationship and difficult to move forward once that relationship is over. At first, it seemed like a fairy tale. Romantic dates, long phone conversations, a beautiful ring, a gorgeous wedding, and a home you loved. He completely changed your life: new friends, new activities, new restaurants, even a new zip code. You did almost everything he suggested because it made you happy to make him happy. But now, despite your best efforts, your relationship is in trouble. You have no idea how you got so far off track and no clue how to figure out what’s best for you. You aren’t even sure who you are anymore. If this scenario sounds painfully familiar, you aren’t alone. Author Avalon Sequoia Brandt knows what it’s like to lose yourself in love, but she has also learned how to find your way back. “Falling in love with someone is one of the best feelings in the world, but while the idea of oneness is romantic, it can also be dangerous,” says Avalon, author of the new book Still I Love: Loving after Three Divorces. “When you’re in the midst of a relationship, it’s all too easy to lose September - October 2014

sight of your own goals, interests, priorities, friends, and more. “And once those things have been lost, finding your way back to a self-actualized, fulfilling life can feel very daunting,” she adds. Avalon shares nine experience-tested tips to help find your way back to a fulfilling life after getting lost in love: If you’re still in the relationship, talk to your partner If you believe that your own needs and preferences consistently take a backseat to your partner’s, your first step should be to share your concerns with him or her. Remember, nothing will change if you don’t voice your feelings, which your partner might not be aware of. His response will tell you a lot about the current health and perhaps the future of your relationship. “Having this conversation can be easier said than done,” Avalon acknowledges. “You may be worried that stating your position will offend your partner or drive him away. But that’s a risk you have to take for the sake of your own mental and emotional well-being. The best case scenario is, of course, that your partner makes a conscious effort to meet you halfway and invest more in your interests and priorities. If that’s not what happens, though, you may need to reconsider the relationship. Avoid romanticizing your partner If you’re in a relationship, the idea of ending it can be incredibly painful. So consciously or unconsciously, you may find yourself fixating on your partner’s positive qualities and downplaying his hurtful or unhealthy behaviors. Even after the relationship has ended, you might look back with nostalgia. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enjoying and admiring all of the good things about past or present partners,” Avalon clarifies. “But it’s important to September - October 2014
be honest about that person’s flaws, too. Otherwise, you run the risk of believing that your partner is ‘perfect’ and blaming all of the relationship’s problems on yourself, which can be fatal to your self-esteem. Romanticizing your partner can also keep you in an unhealthy, manipulative, or controlling relationship long past the point of wisdom. “My best advice is to listen to your intuition,” she says. “Even if it’s uncomfortable to admit, you know when you’re lying to yourself and mentally covering for your partner. Hold him to the same standards of behavior and accountability that you set for yourself.” Pay attention to how you’re feeling
In our hectic, mile-a-minute, on-the-go world, many of us are so busy and preoccupied that we don’t take the time to really check in with ourselves and how we’re feeling. Too often, it takes a major event, a health scare, an anxiety attack, or the dissolution of a relationship, to wake us up to the fact that our lives are unhealthy and off track. “That’s why it’s so important to keep your finger on the pulse of your emotions and intuition,” says Avalon. “Whether you’re in a relationship or not, get into the habit of asking yourself, How does this mesh with my values? Am I honoring myself and my goals? Am I being authentic, or am I calibrating my words and actions to please someone else? When you’re more in tune with yourself, you’ll be in a position to make small adjustments when you first notice that you’re feeling ‘off,’ making it much less likely that you’ll wake up one day wondering, How did I get to this place, and what happened to my life?” Make the hard decisions Ignoring a bad situation or a less-thanideal reality won’t make it go away. If you’ve lost yourself in love, sooner or later you’ll have to make hard decisions like: Do I move out? Is this relationship officially 34

-cigarettes have become more than just one of the latest crazes among our culture. Vaping, which is the process of “smoking or inhaling e-cigs, is a billiondollar business in the U.S. and has its own subculture.

Rather than devices that merely look like cigarettes, whole new breeds of smokeless apparatuses to help users get their next nicotine fix have been spawned by vaping. Technically speaking, vaping isn’t smoking, at least according to its veteran users. Nevertheless, a user is viewed as inhaling and exhaling vapor that is generally mimicking smoke. For the record, according to the Macmillan English Dictionary, “e-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that provide inhaled doses of nicotine through a vaporized solution.” They generally utilize a heating element to vaporize that nicotine cocktail. E-liquid, aka e-juice, is normally composed of four or five ingredients, according to Project:Vape: • Vegetable glycerin and/or propylene glycol makes up 80-90 percent. These are touted as “generally considered safe for consumption” because they are “widely used as food additives in a variety of commercially available products.” • Flavor makes up 10-20 percent. These are generally
23
Hi Class Living
food-grade flavorings intended for baking or candy making. • Nicotine makes up 0-2.4 percent, depending upon potency. But according to The New York Times, “most range between 1.8 percent and 2.4 percent, concentrations that can cause sickness, but rarely death, in children. But higher concentrations, like 10 percent or even 7.2 percent, are widely available on the Internet.” • Potency prompts some manufacturers to use distilled water to dilute the chemicals. The pitch of e-cigarettes is that they are a safer alternative to smoking. Supporters say e-juice is much less harmful than tobacco, which contains tar and other chemicals that cause cancer. Some even use e-cigarettes as a way to cut down on and quit smoking. There is selective research that says vaping may be as effective as nicotine patches in terms of quitting smoking, but a new study documented in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that those who vaped were no likelier to quit or even smoke less than tobacco smokers. (It should be noted, however, that those who smoked e-cigarettes represented only 10 percent of those in the study.) The Boston Globe reported: “Researchers followed nearly 1,000 smokers for a year and found that those who used e-cigarettes were no more likely to quit smoking or reduce their dependence on tobacco cigarettes than those who weren’t using the products at the beginning of the study. About 14 percent of those who didn’t use e-cigarettes quit smoking compared to 10 percent of those (who) used the products.” I have two primary concerns about e-cigarettes. The first is that there is a significant increase of use among minors. Despite the fact that e-juice’s chemicals are less harmful than tobacco, nicotine is still an addictive drug. And in liquid form, potency and ingestion (let alone unregulated chemical mixing) clearly pose greater risks among youths. Neal L. Benowitz, a professor and specialist in nicotine research at the University September - October 2014
of California, San Francisco, explained: “There’s no risk to a barista no matter how much caffeine they spill on themselves. Nicotine is different.” The health risks were explained in a recent New York Times article, “Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Nicotine for E-Cigarettes.” It noted, “Toxicologists warn that e-liquids pose a significant risk to public health, particularly to children, who may be drawn to their bright colors and fragrant flavorings like cherry, chocolate and bubble gum.” Some even look similar to a 5-hour Energy drink, which is why many teens are mixing these vials of nicotine with energy drinks for a quick high, according to Fox News. But e-juices can deliver far more than benign buzzes. The Times continued: “These ‘e-liquids,’ the key ingredients in ecigarettes, are powerful neurotoxins. Tiny amounts, whether ingested or absorbed through the skin, can cause vomiting and seizures and even be lethal. A teaspoon of even highly diluted e-liquid can kill a small child.” Higher concentrations are widely available on the Internet. The Times went on to discuss how a lethal dose at such levels could be “less than a tablespoon,” according to Dr. Lee Cantrell, director of the San Diego division of the California Poison Control System. “Not just a kid. One tablespoon could kill an adult,” he said. The Times further reported on increased poisonings: “Nationwide, the number of cases linked to e-liquids jumped to 1,351 in 2013, a 300 percent increase from 2012, and the number is on pace to double this year, according to information from the National Poison Data System. Of the cases in 2013, 365 were referred to hospitals, triple the previous year’s number.” This is particularly alarming when one realizes, as the Los Angeles Times recently documented from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, that ecigarette use among minors has increased significantly. Case in point, the percentage of high-school students who have tried vaping has gone up significantly in 65 24

ining out has become a national pastime. So has porking out. We’re a fast-food nation of overeating eaterouters, and if you want to trim down and stay healthy, use mindfulness.
SPLIT MEALS
When did portions in American restaurants explode? It’s obscene. Europeans gasp at our super-size meals. We’re the fattest nation in the world, with the heart disease and diabetes to prove it. And research supports the obvious: The more food on your plate, the more you eat.
27
Hi Class Living
So share an entree with someone else. Even if there’s an annoying split plate charge, it’s worth it. More and more, smart restaurants are offering up half orders or smaller portions right on the menu. Train yourself to order less. Tell yourself you can always order more if you’re still hungry. FOCUS ON STARTERS Advanced players skip over the entrees. Instead, they focus on the appetizers, sides and salads. That’s where the gold is. The food’s still a taste thrill, the portions are more manageable, and yes, the prices are lower. You’ll also save hundreds of calories when you make a meal from two appetizers or one starter and a salad, but calorie counting isn’t the point. It’s not as bad as texting at the table, but it can ruin the pleasure of the meal. When you eat, eat. Slow down. Chew. Enjoy. Guilt around food is counterproductive and actually promotes indigestion. WAIST NOT, WANT NOT Take a doggy bag. Order the entree you want, eat half, and take the rest home. If you meet a hungry person or stray animal on the way, be generous.
of crispy french fries, so if that’s your weakness, don’t panic. Count out 9 beauties (not out loud), and be conscious of every bite. Move the rest out of reach. SAY THE MANTRA Memorize this phrase: “Dressing on the side, please.” Practice at home, and repeat it with a smile in every restaurant you visit. I’m all for tasty sauces and dressings, but many places pour on way too much without thinking, and without thinking, you take it all in. Instead, dip your fork in, and sprinkle lightly. DO YOU NEED BREAD Shun the buns and ask waiters to take the breadbasket away. Too many calories, too much gluten, too much bloating. If you can’t resist, satisfy yourself with a few bites or crusts. If you want butter, make a little go a long way. ORDERING WINE Exercise moderation. Then you can toast your good judgment, repeatedly, throughout the night.
SKIP OVER FRIED Avoid the deep fried stuff: the fried chicken, the fried fish, and fried cheese curls. It’s not a matter of “bad” food as much as a bad habit. When you have a lapse, and you wind up with a plate of fried onion rings, at least pull off some of the breading. This is extremely challenging in the case
DESSERT Talk about a minefield. Don’t deprive or punish yourself. You already know that the healthiest desserts are fruits — fresh or icy. But there are genius pastry chefs out there determined to defeat your game plan. So OK, order one gorgeous caramel-coated brownie with two scoops of pecan green tea ice cream, and pass it around the table. Be sure to take the first bite... and then kiss it goodbye. ∆
STRESS and BURNOUT— From Pg. 12 than the rest of their colleagues. Whether we are talking number crunchers or factory workers, it seems clear that satisfied employees tend to produce higher profits for employers, reduce employee turnover and thus reduce the cost of recruiting and training new employees.
According to the Times article, companies are taking on the challenge of fighting these negative consequences of seemingly unmanageable demands by implementing policies as simple as mandating a 90-minute cap on meetings, creating fitness facilities and nap rooms, and provid- 52

Go for a tangy orange, a deep blue hue or a mean emerald green. Then don’t be afraid to mix them all together. The more color in your wardrobe this fall, the better you’ll feel! Carry a big bag Time to get back to work and back to business. The newest carryalls are big on style and embellishment with prints, textures and hardware. These are the statement handbags of the season, and you’ll want to get your hands on one. Match it up Ensemble dressing is back — yes, it’s time to pick out your tops and bottoms, and match them up. Designers this season offer twopiece dressing at its best with matching jackets, skirts and pants. Shift to dresses The ‘60s are back in fashion in a big way. Think the favorite shift dress done in bold blocks of color or graphic designs. These dresses are great to layer over tights and boots or skinny leggings. Wear them under fall’s new oversized coats and sweaters.

Think chunky knits Who doesn’t love a big, fat sweater to cozy up to in the cooler weather? The new sweaters make a great fashion statement all on their own in ribbed knits, cable stitches or detailed with zippers. Perfect to team with your favorite leather skirt for work or jeans for the weekend. Follow the fringe Take a walk on the wild side this fall and let your skirts flow with fringe. The kicky trim is turning up on designer runways everywhere, and now is the time to let it all hang out! Cool it with culottes These flared pants are back this fall and stepping out in great style topped off with some of those great knit sweaters and coats. Check them out in leather or suede. They may become your new favorite go-to pants to wear with everything. FIND YOUR WAY BACK — From Pg. 18 over? Should I cut off contact? If hanging on isn’t healthy, be honest with yourself. Remember, your long-term well-being may require, and is worth short-term pain. Stay close to or reconnect with your family and friends When you lose yourself in love, it’s common to drift away from family and friends. Maybe you’ve been focused primarily on your partner and haven’t invested much in other people, or perhaps you’ve purposefully put distance between yourself and loved ones who questioned the wisdom of your relationship. Whatever the reason, it’s time to reconnect and repair any damage that’s been done. “The people who love you and who have known you for years will keep you grounded and remind you of who you are, if you allow them to do so,” Avalon promises. They also serve as a great sounding board. Take yourself out to dinner And start doing other activities solo, too! September - October 2014
Make it oversized If you need to update your coat this year, then you’ll want to consider wrapping up a la bathrobe style. The newest coats are big and comfy, great for wearing day or night over just about anything in your closet. Manly shoes From lace-up menswear oxfords to stacked lug-soled boots, the masculineinspired look in footwear is stepping out for fall. Pair these looks with dainty anklet socks, frilly skirts and lace dresses for maximum impact and a modern edge. Go mad for plaid It’s long been a traditional fall favorite, but this year, plaid has grown up from its preppy roots and gets all ladylike in midi-skirts, sheath dresses and silk blouses. Celebrate a new season with an old classic revamped for a new fashion year ahead. ∆
See a movie, take a walk in the park, or go to a worship service with only yourself. Essentially, says Avalon, challenge yourself to go about your routine as an individual, not as one-half of a couple. If you want to reclaim your life after losing yourself in love, you must learn to be confident and comfortable on your own. Get back into an old hobby Before immersing yourself in your relationship, what did you do for fun? Where did you find fulfillment? Return to those activities. When you focus on something that you, and only you, enjoy—not something you shared with your partner—you’ll jump-start the healing and growing process. “Pull out your flute or your art supplies,” urges Avalon. “Join a community softball team or hiking group. Sign up for a book club or cooking classes. Go back to school. Developing yourself is empowering and motivating, especially after you’ve
34
been in the habit of doing what your partner preferred. Help someone else It’s important to concentrate on your own needs and desires after losing yourself in love—but don’t become too self-focused and isolated. Serving others is one of the best ways to combat feelings of loneliness while making connections with others and regaining personal purpose. “I have come to firmly believe that my success is not measured by whether my relationships are successful, by how much money I make, by what my job title is, or by the house I live in,” says Avalon. “It’s measured by the positive impact that I have on others’ lives.” Show yourself some TLC You may have had a relationship that ended badly, but you don’t have to live without love. For the sake of your present and your future, you need to learn to love yourself. Create and savor your own rhythm in life, no matter what others may say. Only when you have discovered and embraced who you are can you love others freely and unconditionally. ∆

Johnson, who is always on the lookout for ways to economize and still look great, has honed the art of dressing well on a limited budget. “It’s the ultimate savvy chic,” she says. “And the secret with that is simple: dress a little plainer than you’d like. Chic, as we all know, is a restrained rather than a flashy art. Looking rich is more about texture and proportion than actual explicit signals like gold buttons or giant handbags.” Here are some tips from Johnson for those of us in the job market, whether we’re graduating from college or graduating from motherhood.

Sunglass Shapes
S
unglasses are no longer just a fashion statement; they’re a necessity. So why not amp up the cool factor while at the same time protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays?
Here are a few ways to match the right style of sunglasses to the shape of your face: Stick to opposites
The general rule of thumb has long been to go for glasses that are the opposite shape of your face. Choose rounder frames for square faces; more angular frames for rounder shapes. If you have an oval face, you’re in luck, since almost any sunglass shape will be flattering. Face off in the mirror
Try on sunglasses in front of a full-length mirror. You’ll be amazed at what a difference it will make. You’ll see the whole picture and be able to instantly tell if your sunglasses are in sync with the proportions of your body. Balance is key. body shapes. The same rule applies to larger men and women, who should steer clear of smaller, narrower frames. Choose classic shapes There’s a reason that the Ray-Ban Wayfarer and aviator sunglasses have been around for decades. They are classic styles that flatter a wide variety of face shapes. Now, they are updated in an array of colored frames, metals and lenses. “Foldable” sunglasses in classic shapes are also making a comeback. You can’t go wrong wearing a pair of these iconic shades. Make it personal Many sunglass brands now offer personal customization, so you get the style you want in the color you want. While most people prefer to try on sunglasses in the store before they make a purchase, websites like fitsunglasses.com allow you to upload your own photo to “virtually” try on glasses before you buy them online. Consider skin and hair color Think about the colors of clothes you like to wear. More than likely, you’ll like the same color of sunglasses. We all know those people whose colorful glasses have JOB HUNTING — From Pg. 37 Go with sleek shoes Wear sleek shiny shoes with a low heel and no platform in a neutral, nonclashing tone. Angelina Jolie is her go-to example of chic with her black ballet flats and tan patent-leather pumps. Buy one statement dress According to Johnson, if you wear an eye-popping dress, it conveys a high level of social and professional confidence. Dress in one color from head to toe Wear an entire outfit in one color with a deliberately clashing handbag or skinny belt. The clothes look more expensive because they’re coordinated and create an September - October 2014
become their signature look. Darker frames and lenses are great contrasts to cooler pale skin; and lighter tones look best on darker complexions. Hair color can also be a determining factor in choosing sunglasses. Who can forget those black Ray-Bans Audrey Hepburn wore in 1961 in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”? Change up your outlook If you’ve been wearing the same pair of tortoise-shell sunglasses for the past 10 years, it’s time to make a change. Even if you’re a big fan of the classic shades, there are a lot of new ways to express yourself. Mixes of materials are making big news: sidepieces wrapped in printed leather or wood, reflective mirrored lenses in bold colors, and even UV-protective lenses to slide over your Google Glass. Have an attitude A glamorous pair of sunnies is one of the fastest ways to get into the movie-star mode. The retro shades of yesteryear are once again having a heyday. There’s a pair to fit every face. Don’t be afraid to glam it up with frames decorated with graphic patterns or metallic studs. There are even plenty of cat-eye glasses that will make you purr. ∆
unbroken line from top to toe.” Stick with well-groomed hair Make sure your hair is glossy and natural with lots of volume and subtle highlights that “don’t look raccoon-stripy.”“Pokerstraight blowouts look very cheap, especially when the ends look like fried, pointy rattails. Banish the straightening iron!” Own your own style Johnson suggests adding one “eccentric” touch to your outfit. “I have a Missoni scarf that I wear with a very formal suit jacket,” she says. “It makes me look less try-hard and adds a glamorous patina to formal tailoring.” ∆

Brighten Your Home With Lamps Mary Carol Garrity
L
ooking for an easy way to bring a new splash of style to your interior decor? Add a sensational lamp.
Here are four tips for picking a lamp that will brighten your home for years to come. Pick Lamps that Turn You On If you only think of lamps as functional tools, the workhorses that provide light so you don’t stumble around in the dark, it’s time for a new point of view. Just like the artwork on your walls and the accents on your mantel, lamps are powerful decorations that can infuse your home with personality and give it singular character. For that reason, don’t ever settle for a lamp that doesn’t turn you on. Don’t overthink your decision, simply see how the lamp makes you feel. If it leaves you cold

or ambivalent, walk away. But if it makes your heart skip a beat, it’s the one for you. Finding a lamp that puts a huge grin on your face won’t be a problem. The selection right now is simply amazing. Today’s designers have taken classic shapes and styles and re-envisioned them, giving this new breed of lamps a timeless yet hip look that works perfectly in any home, from traditional to contemporary. To help you pick the perfect one, first determine how the lamp will be used. Do you need it for task lighting or to provide ambiance? Next, zero in on what colors, shapes and finishes you’re attracted to. How about the lampshade? Do you prefer dark shades, with their dramatic look, or light shades that add a bit of sunny brilliance? What shape intrigues you? Circular, square, rectangular, oval?
have a pair of tall, thin buffet lamps that you now realize are too small to use on the side tables in your living room, consider placing the pair on top of the dresser in your bedroom or on either side of the vanity in your bathroom. Buy Quality When you invest in a good, quality lamp, it will pay big dividends. It will last you for years — probably longer than some of your upholstered furnishings. And it will elevate the look of your home’s interior decor. Lamps that are cheap look cheap, tarnishing the stylish appearance you’re aiming for in your home.
Get the Scale Right For a lamp to work well in your home, it has to be the right scale. Don’t make the common mistake of picking a lamp that is so little or delicate it will be overpowered by the size of the room and its furnishings. Instead, look for a lamp that’s a bit beefier, carrying enough visual weight to hold its own on a sofa table, end table or buffet. “Bigger is better” is usually a good rule of thumb when selecting a lamp, but you still want to use common sense. If your table is small, or if the lamp will be paired with very fine, delicate furniture, you will want one that is small enough to harmonize, not take over. As you right-size the lamps in your home, you may find that some of your smaller lamps are displaced. If they are good lamps, by all means find a new home for them in your decor. For instance, if you
Walk on the Wild Side When picking lamps for a room, resist the urge to make them all match. Instead, walk on the wild side and mix them up with wild abandon. Pull together an assortment of shapes, styles, materials, colors and dimensions. We’re seeing a trend toward lamps that are more transitional, meaning they artfully walk the thin line between contemporary and traditional decor. Designers are achieving this careful balance by creating a classic-style lamp out of a more contemporary material or in a trendy color. They are also reinterpreting the classic styles ever so slightly, giving today’s lamps new energy. Another way designers are adding more pizzazz to lamps is by pairing them with great lampshades. Some feature mod shapes, others unusual colors. In fact, if you have a lamp you love, with good lines and form and scale, you could try simply switching out the lampshade to give it a new lease on life. ∆
STRESS and BURNOUT — From Pg. 28 ing healthy, high-quality food at little or no charge. But change is often slow to come, even in the face of the need for it. And let’s face it; we all have those days when we feel bored, overloaded or unappreciated. But if you feel you are slipping into burnout, know
that your options for dealing with it may be multiplying. Work opportunities that put employees first seem to be expanding as more and more senior executives realize they are suffering from the very same symptoms and conflicts as those who work for them. ∆

Although there are plants suitable for every growing region, tender tropical plants won’t survive in temperatures below a certain level. Common plants in that category include Rex Begonia, ferns, cacti, bromeliads, succulents and even small citrus trees. Before outdoor temperatures get too chilly, these plants need to move indoors. Plants that are moved when indoor temperatures more closely match the conditions outside better handle the transition. The bigger the difference, the greater the shock on plants coming inside, so try not to wait until the first frost or freeze warning before moving plants. Before your plants settle in to their new winter home indoors, there are a few things you should do. Inspect for pests If insects or bugs are living on your plants while outside, they’ll make the trip indoors. That’s why it’s a good idea to inspect each plant first. Some bugs and insects are so small and hide so well, it can be difficult to spot them. An easy and effective control is a stiff blast of water. Don’t make it so strong that you damage 64

any factors increase
A recent research study showed that women who frequently used antibiotics had a twofold increase in the risk of breast cancer. Women who had been prescribed antibiotics for more than 500 days were more likely to contract it than those who did not. The immediate concern is that these findings may cause women to elect not to take antibiotics for bacterial infections that can cause serious harm if not treated. And then there is the controversial report linking wearing a bra to breast cancer risk. In response to this information, both the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation and the American Cancer Society issued emphatic statements assuring women that there was no scientific evidence to support this observation. Today we know a great deal about specific risks that affect the chances of developing breast cancer. Some established factors are not modifiable. There September - October 2014

is a strong link between age and breast cancer risk. More than 75 percent of all breast cancer occurs in women over the age of 50, and the risk is almost twice as high after age 60. More than one close relative with the disease increases the risk, too, particularly if breast cancer developed prior to menopause. If a relative has had the disease in more than one breast, the risk increases fourfold to eightfold. Having had breast cancer increases the risk of developing it again by threefold or fourfold. Recent research has shown that women who carry a mutation of one of two genes, called BRCA1 and BRCA2, have an 80 percent chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetimes. These genes normally prevent breast cancer, but if they mutate and become abnormal, they no longer function, leading to a higher risk of breast cancer. Today, this gene should be measured in anyone who has a strong family history of breast

cancer, particularly if it occurred at a young age. Other factors increasing risk of breast cancer that are not modifiable include menarche at an early age, menopause at an older age, not having children, or having only one child at a late age. There are some risk factors that are clearly modifiable. First and foremost is the significant increased risk in women who undergo hormone-replacement therapy after menopause. This has recently received much attention, with studies suggesting that taking estrogen and progesterone not only increases risk of breast and uterine cancers but also increases risk of heart attacks, strokes and Alzheimer’s disease. Many women are still electing to use them to prevent menopausal symptoms. However, if you already are at increased risk of breast cancer, hormone-replacement therapy should clearly be avoided. Although controversial, 65

colorful packages or cans with a long list under the label, aren’t good for you.
In fact, they’re bad for you. You can discover just how bad in books, videos and all over the Internet. It’s no secret that processed foods contain chemicals, additives, preservatives, artificial dyes, flavors, colors and other suspect ingredients that are linked to a variety of health problems. It’s not restful to dwell on the known negatives: the weight gain, the strokes, the fatigue, the diabetes, heart disease, cancers, and annoying digestive upsets that then must be addressed with little purple pills. Instead, I’m going to share a positively intriguing resource for weaning yourself off processed foods, a 14-week plan that should be a required course in schools everywhere. This step-by-step approach, created by the crusading Lisa Leake for eatLocalGrown.com, consists of minipledges that you take week by week, alone or with friends or, best of all, with your entire family. Each week is another way to experience more real food and less junk. By the time 14 weeks are over, you’ll be closer than ever to eating clean. I’m not saying it’s easy — “the perfect is the enemy of the good” — but the cumulative rewards are remarkable. When you eat clean, you feel lighter and more energetic. Chances are you’ll lose weight. Aches, pains and other symptoms that sent you to the doctor will lessen and might disappear because, food is medicine. When

you eat the real stuff, your body can thrive and heal itself. For more along these lines, go to Leake’s website 100DaysofRealFood. com and feast on her informative blogs. Ready for action? Here’s the challenge: Week one: Eat at least two different fruits and or vegetables — preferably organic — with every meal. Week two: Your beverages are limited to coffee, tea, water and milk. Don’t choke. Give it a go. One cup of juice is allowed per week, and wine, preferably red, is allowed in moderation. Week three: All meat consumed this week is locally raised. Limit yourself to three-to-four modest servings a week, treating meat as a side dish not the main course. Week four: No fast food or deep fried food. Week five: Try two new whole foods you’ve never tried before. Week six: Eat no food products labeled as low fat, “lite,” reduced or non-fat. Week seven: All grains must be 100 percent whole grains.
Week eight: Stop eating when you are full. Week nine: No refined or artificial sweeteners. No white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, Splenda, stevia, agave, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup and cane juice. Your food and drink can only be sweetened with modest amounts of honey or maple syrup. Week ten: No refined or hydrogenated oils. That means no vegetable oil, soybean, corn, canola, organic canola, margarine, grape seed oil. Week eleven: Eat at least one locally grown or raised food item at each meal. That means local honey, eggs, nuts, meats, fruits, vegetables. Week twelve: No sweeteners! Not even honey and maple syrup. (You’ve come this far... you can do it!) Week thirteen: Nothing artificial. Avoid all artificial ingredients. Week fourteen: No more than five ingredients. Avoid packaged food products that list more than five ingredients, no matter the ingredients. ∆
MOVING PLANTS — From Pg. 59 the plant, but it should be forceful enough to knock any bugs out of their hiding places. This simple task is well worth the small amount of effort. A pest-free plant inside over winter will improve chances of survival and make your life a bit easier, too.
to repot to a larger container and fresh potting soil. It’s also time to break the circular root mass. My preferred method is to knead apart the roots including the bottom, gently tearing apart the matted root formation so new growth will be redirected outward.
Repot your plants After a full season or more of growth outdoors, the root mass within pots likely has expanded to fill the space. Once roots grow to the confines of the container, they continue to grow in whatever direction they can. But the longer they’re forced into this behavior, the more difficult it becomes for the plant to thrive, let alone take up water and nutrients. So as you prepare your plants for their new environment, take the time to remove them from their existing container to inspect the roots. Look for light-colored, non-odorous, healthy-looking roots that have not yet formed a circular pattern. If any of these conditions are present, it’s time September - October 2014
Lighting is important Although replicating outdoor lighting conditions is impossible, it’s a good idea to provide some supplemental lighting from a south-facing window or an overhead florescent light set to stay on about 12 hours a day. Your goal is not to keep the plant growing -- just alive. It will likely go into a dormant or semi-dormant state, so its lighting needs are not as great. But some amount of natural or close-to-natural light will help. Water and fertilizer less While inside, plants don’t require as much water and fertilizer as outdoors,
64
especially those that have gone into semidormancy. Slightly damp soil is sufficient. Similarly, fertilization needs are reduced. To keep a nondormant plant happy while indoors, fertilize at a rate of about a quarter to half of what is suggested for outdoor feeding. Instructions are listed on the label
for indoor applications. Once the risk of frost has passed next spring, you can safely move your plants outside. Water the soil well, but allow them time to acclimate to the outdoors again for about 10 days before resuming a more vigorous fertilization routine. ∆
E-CIGARETTES — From Pg. 24 recent years, from 4.7 percent in 2011 to 10 percent in 2012. One can only imagine how that percentage has increased in the past two years. It’s no surprise, the LA Times continued, that “health advocacy groups, including the American Heart Assn., Tobacco-Free Kids and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, have expressed concern that any delay on additional regulations would allow the fast-growing industry, which already counts billions of dollars of sales, to target more children.” That is why even some of e-cigarettes’ biggest supporters are advocating some regulation. Chip Paul, CEO of Palm Beach Vapors, which operates 13 nationwide ecigarette franchises and plans to open 50 more in 2014, says: “It’s the wild, wild west right now. Everybody fears FDA regula-
tion, but honestly, we kind of welcome some kind of rules and regulations around this liquid.” Besides the health risks, my biggest problem with e-cigarettes remains that I’m just not a believer that introducing another popular addictive vice in society is going to help young, old or America. Instead of perpetuating a this-is-better-than-that drug consumerism — as many do with the marijuana vs. tobacco smoking debate — maybe we should simply start making healthier decisions by eliminating any and all potential health risks in our lives. Justifying eating a plain doughnut over a glazed doughnut because it’s healthier doesn’t mean one is making a healthy decision that will empower the person for optimal human performance and longevity. ∆
BREAST CANCER — From Pg. 61 there is evidence linking breast cancer risk to dietary fat intake. The higher the fat intake, the higher the risk. In fact, population studies show that societies that consume high-fat diets have a much higher risk of breast cancer than those consuming a lowfat diet. Most recently a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute linked high-saturated-fat intake to breast cancer. Being 20 percent or more above your ideal body weight and significantly obese increases breast cancer risk. Lack of exercise, excessive alcohol intake and cigarette smoking also increase the risk of breast cancer. If you have a high risk of developing breast cancer, there are currently three strategies that can be used to reduce that risk. First, do everything you can to reduce
the modifiable risk factors. Exercise, eat a prudent diet, avoid post-menopausal hormone replacement, don’t smoke and use alcohol in moderation. Please have mammograms every two years if at low risk or annually from age 40 if at high risk. If you have a very strong family history, or carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, chemoprevention by the use of medications like tamoxifen should be considered. Some women , Angelina Jolie for example, may elect to undergo a bilateral mastectomy because their risk is so high. Remember that every day, new information appears linking something to a disease like breast cancer. Being aware and sensible will go a long way to either prevent or assure that the disease is identified early when a cure is still possible. ∆

The farm sprawls over 236-acres of green meadows, lively brooks, mirror ponds, and lush forests. From the moment you enter the property you are surrounded by fields dotted with grazing horses. As you stop for a moment to take in the unfolding scene, you’ll immediately feel a sense of peace and serenity. A winding road takes you to the main building, Stu’s Inn, a 1789 barn transported to this site and meticulously rebuilt and decorated. The nine guestrooms and one suite, all named after the resident horses, are exquisitely appointed with country antique furniture, original art, organic bedding, Frette linens and robes, and modern bathrooms. The farm also offers an additional, separate guesthouse with 4 bedrooms, perfect for families and friends. The dÊcor throughout is flawless, as if staged for a photo shoot in an architectural magazine. The farm is home to 22 beautiful horses that roam freely in large paddocks throughout the property. These horses are at the heart of the Eponaquest Experience, a guided program in the Horse Arena where you can have a close encounter with the magnificent equines.
