nge Your Life? Your Day Dottie DeHart
It seems the dreams you once had have disappeared into the quicksand that has become your daily life. Like so many others, you’re an unwitting victim of today’s demanding work culture, not to mention bad habits that are sabotaging your best efforts. “As you go through life, you develop habits and routines that you think will help you succeed,” says Core, author of Change Your Day, Not Your Life: A Realistic Guide to Sustained Motivation, More Productivity, and the Art of Working Well. “Problem is, many of those patterns probably don’t work for you personally. What’s productive for your coworker may not work well for you, for example. Or a strategy that was effective
five years ago may no longer work.” Even your instincts can lead you astray, he says. But you can change habits and patterns that don’t serve you. You can refocus your attention, redirect your thoughts, and generate greater motivation, energy, optimism, and creativity, as well as more rewarding relationships. “To start reclaiming the goals that once inspired and excited you, you’ll have to change the way you approach your day,” says Core. “Instead of a worker whose actions are dictated by supervisors and to-do lists, you’ll need to begin acting like the CEO of your own life.” He gives a few CEO-worthy tactics that will help you start thriving immediately: Figure out what’s doable in a day You can’t sustain major changes at once. Simply change your day. Reengineer your routine one day at a time, cutting out a small stressor here, and adding in a more productive habit there. “You must set realistic boundaries. You must create goals that can be accomplished in the space of a day. Remember, nearly all problems, challenges, and needs are best faced if they are brought down to the scale of ‘what can be done right now’ by taking on ‘one small piece’ of a difficult situation.” Get big things done before 9:00 a.m. Ever notice how your morning sets the tone for your whole day? As Sir Isaac Newton famously said, “Objects in motion tend to stay in motion.” So if an object (you) gets
11
Hi Class Living
a groggy, frustrating start, you’ll probably feel sluggish and behind the eight-ball all day long. However, if you start your day with positive and productive ideas, actions, thoughts, and feelings, you’re likely to gain momentum throughout the day. DO first, then KNOW Most people believe that the knowledge that something is important should make you want to do it. But in reality, that’s not the case. So, why don’t we do what we know we should do? If we know spending less time on Facebook will make us more productive, why won’t we just commit to spending an hour less on the site each day? If we know setting aside 30 minutes to walk or jog each day will make us healthier, why aren’t we jumping up off the couch right now? Study after study shows that knowledge alone usually isn’t enough to impact our desires, Core shares. “In fact, the opposite is true. First, you must do something — like bite the bullet and put on your workout clothes! If you experience positive feelings, attitudes, and results because of your action, you will learn that whatever you just did is good, and you’ll want to do it again, and again, and again. Over time, you’ll develop a new habit, and you’ll become an evolved person. Own up to your junk hours “Junk hours” are a little like junk food: While they provide short-term pleasure, they contribute to long-term imbalance and exhaustion. For instance, junk hours might include chasing rabbit trails on the Internet, shooting the breeze with colleagues at the water cooler, checking email in order to avoid doing other work, or even attending an unnecessary meeting. “In order to maximize each day, you need to own up to your junk hours,” Core instructs. “You need to identify when you’re going through the motions of work, versus when real work is being done. Don’t be ashamed that your junk hours exist, because everybody needs to take breaks and shift gears. Your task July - August 2014
now is to exchange your low-value ‘junk’ activities for ones that build greater health and value into your workday. Instead of adding to your to-do list, build a new pattern Maybe you’re thinking, Sure, I’d like to change my day, but the thought of adding a boatload of items to my already out-of-control to-do list makes me want to crawl back into bed. I can’t handle any more tasks and responsibilities! If that sounds familiar, take a deep breath. The changes that build momentum are rooted in decisions, not additional tasks. “To build a productive new pattern into your life, you usually won’t have to add new tasks to your day,” Core confirms. “Instead, you’ll simply do what you are already doing, or want to do, in a way that becomes habitual. For instance, if you want to wake up an hour earlier so that you can jump-start the day, you simply have to change the time your alarm rings and the time you go to bed. If you want to be more productive at work, you might have to replace aimless procrastination with scheduled breaks. In both cases, you’re changing the way you perform existing tasks, not adding new ones. “Remember, though, it isn’t sufficient to simply trigger the start of a new behavior,” he adds. “You need to make sure that you have a motivating reason to make this change, as well as the confidence and energy to sustain it so that it becomes a pattern.” Start with one thing. Then add another. Then another Losing weight is one of the most commonly made resolutions. It’s also one of the most commonly abandoned. Core says that’s because people think of losing weight as a singular change. It’s not. To lose weight, a person will need to eat healthier, eat smaller quantities, and become more physically active. “The point is, don’t take on more 38

n a rare glimmer of insight we wonder why we’re still hanging on to a “romance” that makes us miserable. Or we hear friends complain repeatedly about a relationship they’re “stuck” in. “When people seem mentally healthy and it looks like they could easily make a change that would make them happier, we’re absolutely baffled by why they don’t,” says Steven Jay Fogel, author of the new book Your Mind Is What Your Brain Does for a Living.

he economy is scarier than ever and jobs are hard to come by. So what advice can you give your child to ensure that he’ll make it as an adult? Ben Carpenter, author of the book The Bigs: The Secrets Nobody Tells Students and Young Professionals About How to Find a Great Job, Do a Great Job, Start a Business, and Live a Happy Life, offers some advise: Do what you’re good at, not what you love Much of the career advice that’s doled out these days encourages young people to follow their dreams and feed their passion. But you also want him to become and remain solvent instead

Hi Class Living
of holding out for the perfect job that might never materialize. “That’s why you should underscore to your child that choosing a career he can do well, rather than one that seems fun and exciting, might be his best bet,” Carpenter states. Most professionals are happiest doing what they are good at, while pursuing other passions — that their careers give them the means to finance — on the side.” Try out different fields when you’re young It generally takes at least a few tries to find the best field, company, and/or position from which to build a career. When you’re young and before you have children is the ideal time to aggressively seek out the best match for your personality and talents. Always ask yourself, What’s my edge? What makes you unique and different? Why should other people pay attention to you? What do you have to offer? What gives you an edge over the competition? “Your child needs to figure out what makes her stand out from her peers and apply that distinction to a multitude of professional scenarios. If she’s starting a business, her edge can help her to define her product or service’s niche. If she’s going after a promotion, it can help differentiate her from her coworkers. In all situations, it will help her define how she can become her personal best.” Think of your boss and your company before yourself Make sure your graduate understands that when you’re a rookie in the big leagues, you have to prove that you’re going to be an asset to the team, not a drain on its resources or a liability for the coach. Often, that means putting your boss’s wants and needs ahead of your own. Show up before the boss…leave after he does…schedule personal appointments after business hours…respond to phone July - August 2014
calls and emails ASAP. Be creative and bold There are millions of job seekers with the same qualifications as your child, so if you want her to receive one of a limited number of opportunities, she’ll need to stand out. “Instead of sending out a résumé that will probably get lost in HR Purgatory, walk right into the ‘big boss’s office, hand him her résumé, and tell him she’d call him later that afternoon.” Carpenter suggests. Comfort and success rarely go hand in hand At some point, your child might have to decide which is more important: sticking with the familiarity of the status quo, or taking a chance on reaching the next rung of the ladder. Remind him that opportunity won’t find him within his comfort zone. Stay in the driver’s seat of your career Life is short, and the same opportunities rarely come twice. Instruct your child not to simply ‘go along for the ride,’ especially when her goals and potential for success are at stake. Encourage her to take an active hand in charting her course forward. Don’t agree to anything you don’t fully understand Once your graduate gets her foot in the door, she’ll likely want to impress her colleagues and higher-ups at every turn. And in an attempt to avoid looking like she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she may be tempted to feign understanding and nod her head, even though she really has no clue what’s going on. Caution her against this strategy! “Early in my career, a client bullied me into saying ‘yes’ to a request I didn’t understand — and it cost my employer $25,000,” recalls Carpenter. Remind her that her integrity, credibility, and reputation — and possibly her job! — are all at stake. It’s always better to swallow your pride and say, ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t 26

Sunscreens
Marilynn Preston
A very high number of name-brand chemical sunscreens are tainted with toxic ingredients and act as endocrine disruptors, and should be swept from your shelves, right along with artificial sweeteners, and antibacterial soaps. Just say “no” to Oxybenzone, Retinyl palmitate and blends of insect repellent and sunscreen. Don’t use sunscreen powders either. The Food and Drug Administration banned them in 2012 because the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles could get into people’s lungs and cause serious damage. Sunscreen sprays are harmful in a similar way, so get rid of them too. And you know those super-high SPF sunscreens rated 50+ or more that you bought because you thought you were getting super-high extra protection from skin cancer? It’s not true. It’s just clever marketing. A 50+ isn’t better for you than a 30 and can be much worse because it gives you a false sense of protection and results in even more exposure to damaging rays. These are some of the sunny highlights of this year ’s Environmental Working Group’s 2014 Sunscreen Guide, a mustread for sun lovers. Check the EWG’s online list of best and worst sunscreens (www.ewg.org). An eye opener fact is that rates of skin cancer haven’t gone down since people have been slathering up with chemical sunscreens, but they’ve skyrocketed. For
example, the number of melanoma cases has tripled since the 1970s, when sunscreen mania began. For a fuller explanation of what’s been going on, pay attention to EWG’s first Sun Safety Campaign promoting the use of physical sunscreens over chemical sunscreens. Meanwhile, let’s shine a little light on some of the darker details: AVOID OXYBENZONE This chemical ingredient is a synthetic estrogen. It quickly penetrates your skin, gets into your bloodstream, circulates throughout your body, and is linked to cell damage, endocrine disruption, allergic reactions and cancer. And not just skin cancer. Breast cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer, too. More than 40 percent of all beach and sport sunscreens on the market today have this hormonedisrupting ingredient. AVOID RETINYL PALMITATE Retinyl palmitate is another name for vitamin A. It’s a very good nutrient in your sweet potatoes and spinach, but not in your sunscreen, says the EWG. There’s growing data (including the FDA’s own research) that links vitamin A to the accelerated growth of skin tumors and lesions. The sunscreen you use to prevent skin cancer is raising your risk of getting it. The EWG reports that 20 percent of the sunscreens on the market list retinyl palmitate as an ingredient.
25
Hi Class Living
Yes, you’ll look like you’ve dived into a vanilla cupcake, but now there are some newer formulas of physical sunscreen that blend in better. The best sunscreen, many experts conclude, is a hat and a shirt. Also make sure that you do regular self-exams, looking for suspicious moles or growths. If you see something, say something. And even if you don’t, have a professional check out your skin at least once a year. ∆
THE GOOD NEWS Two-thirds of the mass-marketed sunscreens the EWG analyzed don’t work well and have toxic ingredients. But the good news is there are more good choices available than ever before. Zinc and titanium-based products are physical sunscreens that don’t penetrate the skin, don’t contaminate your endocrine system, and offer lasting ultraviolet protection. IS YOUR GRAD READY— From Pg. 20 understand. I need you to explain.’ When you’re upset, choose to look forward, not back You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can control how you react and move forward. “You know what it’s like to be handed an undesirable task at work, or be blamed for your boss’s mistake.”Carpenter says. “You can choose to focus on your anger and irritation for hours, or even days. But that doesn’t do you a bit of good. Instead, in these situations, advise your child to channel his thoughts and efforts toward playing the hand he’s been dealt in a way that will benefit him the most.” Learn to appreciate diverse work styles In life and in work, we all tend to gravitate toward others who think like us. But if your child doesn’t push herself past the familiar, she’ll be severely limiting herself. “No matter what the situation is, encourage your child to always try to seek out and utilize her team’s talents, even if she doesn’t understand their methods,” he adds. “You can never be sure you have the best answer until you’ve heard all viewpoints.” Look after your own career interests,” he says. “Nobody else is going to do it for you.” Own your mistakes Refusing to own your mistakes doesn’t July - August 2014
make you seem more competent; it reveals cowardice, callousness, and untrustworthiness. “Tell your child that if he is a hardworking, valued employee, when he does own up to his mistakes, his confession will be viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness, by his coworkers,” Carpenter insists. “Plus, he’ll be in a position to learn and improve.” Be a good steward of the “little” things For example, always proofread your emails for errors before pressing “send.” Don’t leave voicemails unanswered at the end of the day. Keep your desk and computer files organized. Call your clients to share progress, even when a report isn’t required. Putting in just a little more work than most people are willing to is a great way to propel yourself toward success. If you want to be a leader, act like one The best way to move up in the ranks is to lead in whatever position you’re in now, confirms Carpenter. “Even if you’re the lowest man or woman on the totem pole, you can still display leadership qualities like having integrity and a good attitude, providing others with helpful feedback, and treating them with respect. If you’re the exception from day one, the Powers That Be will notice,” says carpenter.

Do what you say you’re going to do, when you say you’re going to do it
One basic requirement for doing an outstanding job is to handle all your workrelated tasks, large or small, in a timely manner. Don’t let anyone have anything negative to say about you Everyone your child comes in contact with should have a positive experience with him,” says Carpenter. “Even if someone is a pest, rude, or stupid, instruct your child to always treat him respectfully. One day he may be working with, or for, that person. Also, mention that how his boss views him will be heavily influenced by what people in the company tell that boss.” Don’t complain about your job to your coworkers There will be plenty of things your child won’t like about her first job. But complaining about them around the water cooler — even if she has a very sympathetic audience — is never a good idea. “If negative comments get back to your child’s boss, she will develop a reputation for unprofessional behavior,” assures Carpenter. “Moreover, her boss will wonder why she didn’t talk to him directly. Anytime your child is unhappy with something at work, instruct her to bring those concerns directly to her supervisor. If she feels that isn’t possible, tell her to continue to do the best job she can while looking for a more suitable position.” A single act can ruin your great reputation “It takes a lifetime to build a reputation, but a single act can destroy it,” notes Carpenter. “Most mistakes can be corrected and don’t do lasting damage to a person’s reputation or career. However, some things cannot be undone. Don’t allow your child to play fast and loose with his reputation. Make sure he doesn’t assume that ‘it 34

Take your time There are racks and racks of swimwear out there, for all sizes and shapes, and if you haven’t shopped for swimsuits in a while, you’ll be surprised at all the stylish ways there are to suit up this year.
Size up I know none of us want to admit that we may be a size 12 in a swimsuit, when we wear normally wear a size 10 dress, but remember, we’re talking swimwear here... tight-fitting, bare-your-skin stuff. So don’t be afraid to take it up a notch or two — or even three. But make sure it fits, no matter what the size. Wrinkly is not a good look, and neither is a string bikini stretched under that dreaded muffin top.

enim is a fashion trend that’s classic every season. But every year these denim designs are updated and given a new twist. Let’s face it: We all need a little jean therapy every now and then. So check out these latest trends: Skinny jeans are here to stay For summer, the skinny jean is still a fashion must-have. Softer blues turn up for warmer weather teamed with sheer flowing tops, short-sleeved tees and sleeveless tanks. The boot-cut promises to become a denim classic Since it is a flattering silhouette for most women, this jean in darker washes is a favorite pant to wear to work. It can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. High-rise waists give this jean even more options. Pair with a cropped jacket and longer top for work or a cropped sweater for more casual outings. Skinny jeans by Rock & Republic. July - August 2014

im Both the skinny jean and the boot-cut jean are getting even more “denimized” this season with the addition of chambray shirts and jean jackets. Denim worn head to toe used to be a definite fashion no-no, but now it is a chic trend. There is one caveat to this “rule”: Try to wear similar color shades together. The boyfriend jean This loose-fitting shape is another summer denim staple. This season, the relaxed jean gets cuffed for even more casual style. You’ll see them at the beach, all rolled up and ready to go with flip-flops. Distressed denim Now, even the most “haute” designers are selling their denim blasted with rips and tears. Witness Rihanna on the cover of the March 2014 Vogue wearing Marc Jacobs’ Louis Vuitton distressed jeans paired with a jet-beaded Victorian mesh top. Denim shorts They are, of course, another summer staple. The cutoffs are still a popular way to cool off on hot days. But longer Bermuda shorts are another trendy option, too. Rompers and overalls No, these are not just for the under-6 set. And don’t let visions of romping around the farm get you going either. These newest one-piece denim delights are much more sophisticated. Think more fitted and 34

ashion for men is all about dressing to fit a certain lifestyle. There are many ways to dress, whether they are a CEO type, traveling road warrior, bookworm student, reality show wannabe star or traditional dad.
Here are top 10 styles for this season according to Tom Julian, men’s fashion director for The Doneger Group picks: Slim-fit printed shirt/printed T-shirt Think of the sport shirt gone artful with prints that range from tropical florals to kitschy to geometrics. and great for layering. This season, there is more denim on denim — a range of blues from light to dark. The fashion polo The country club classic goes modern with new shapes and different details. We have seen the polo receive designer touches, such as contrast sleeves, buttondown collars and pocket variations. Our top pick would be the color-blocked shirt that allows more of a graphic focus on the chest or shoulders. This can help to deemphasize a stomach or torso. The fashion sweatshirt Fashion designers have embraced the old-school sweatshirt and have turned it into a modern must-have in a wide range of fabrics and prices. We like the idea of the French terry sweatshirt that has accents or some type of artful touch. Maybe it’s the contrast trim at the collar and sleeves, or maybe it’s the fabric piecing in cotton at the back or side seams. Many young men are wearing the sweatshirt in unexpected ways, including teaming it with seersucker pants, embroidered cotton trousers or with casual colorful cotton three-fourths length pull-on pants. shops have taken a new look at nautical and turned it into tongue-in-cheek fun country club dressing, using nautical stripes and patterns in a mix of natural or earthy colors, as well as kaleidoscopic and bright hues. contemporary dresser, is a cross between a jogging pant and some type of cargo bottom, especially because of the pockets and utility features, like elastic and buttons. The best way to wear these pants is loose, with a casual jacket and a simple T-shirt. Some directional men like the drop-crotch style that mirrors the MC Hammer pants of the ‘80s.
Swim trunks A range of shapes and fabrics has allowed this beach item to act as a street item. Look for a fully constructed waist with a zip-fly front and inset, or go with the retroinspired surf trunk. These bottoms are also printed and graphic and available in florals, geometrics and foulard prints, which are almost like necktie patterns.
Linen sport coats The past few years have been about the cotton sport coat, but now we see emerging an unconstructed one, preferably in shades of blue. The style should be a two-button single or four-on-two double-breasted. We also like that linen jackets are being designed with a single or double pleat.
White stories From the blazer to the jean, white is a tonal story that many men may embrace, especially because of the ease in wearing natural hues and having lots of layering options. The jogger The newest item, a must-have for the COOL DENIM — From Pg. 31 accessorized with heels and clutches. Denim Shirts They are another big denim “do” this season. From faded chambrays to darker blue washes, jean shirts are now paired with jeans. Denim shirtdresses are also another big hit for the upcoming season. IS YOUR GRAD READY — From Pg. 27 will never happen to me.’ Tell him not to do anything he would be embarrassed to see as a headline on the evening news!” Don’t pick fights you can’t win Fighting in the office is a bad idea, period. It makes people unhappy and unproductive July - August 2014
The bomber jacket The bomber was always military- or fall-focused. Now the bomber can work with bright colors. Prints allow the jacket to become the key focus, especially when worn with light or dark denim jeans. Don’t forget accessories. Key extras this season include the bucket hat (reversible print to solid), designer high-top sneakers and a braided wristband or bracelet. ∆ jean jackets Jean Jackets are always a fashion favorite. This season, expect to see the latest jackets shortened, much more distressed and much more casual. Think even the splashed-withbleach look. Don’t gripe about your coworker with the rest of the team. “These comments have a way of getting back to the people they’re about,”observes Carpenter. “Even if the other person never becomes aware of what you said, your colleagues will still make judgments about your character based on your willingness to bash someone else behind his or her back.” says Carpenter Live within your means

Like many young people who are just beginning to support themselves, your graduate may think that his personal finances won’t impact his life in the workplace. According to Carpenter, that’s wishful thinking, especially if your child is struggling to stay solvent. If he’s worried about money, his anxiety might impact his focus, his performance, and even the values he applies to his work. “If you don’t yet make a lot of money, don’t acquire a taste for expensive things. You will be happier in a small apartment and driving an older car, than you will be in a big apartment, driving a fancy car, and having to worry about how to pay for it all” he says.

Finally, remind your graduate that while she’ll need to put her nose to the grindstone, she shouldn’t forget to remove it every once in awhile! “While work should certainly be a priority, it’s also important to have fun and disengage every once in awhile. The fuller and more satisfying your child’s life is in general, the more effective she’ll be at work. Help your child understand that when you live and work by a code that’s shaped by values, integrity, dedication, and a true team spirit, you will set yourself apart from the other rookies in a way that gets you hired, recognized, and promoted.” concludes Carpenter. ∆

ummer is here, so it’s time to head out for some fun in the sun. Here are some stylish items you might want to include in your travel wardrobe: Jersey separates There’s nothing that beats the comfort of soft, stretchy separates that are wrinkle-free, whether you’re on an airplane or riding in a car. Think a long midi skirt, tunic top or wide-leg pants. You can mix and match all week long. A skort The best of shorts and skirts, the skort is making a comeback and is perfect for traveling when you want to be a little more dressed up. Culottes are a longer cousin of the skort and great traveling companions, too. White pants This is another basic that you can dress up or down. I like the summery look of white capri pants, but longer white trousers are also a great option for dinners out when teamed with a cotton jacket or sweater. The maxi dress This one covers a multitude of skin sins while also looking elegant and chic. Choose a black solid one for a more polished look at night; a striped or printed one for a stroll on the beach. For even more coverage, pack a light cardigan or lightweight shawl. The sporty dress It’s a shorter dress that’s long on style. Wear it to work or wear it shopping in Paris. In a bright color like coral, it’s a winner. Draw-

Essentials string tank dresses are another way to add a sporty touch to your travel wardrobe. The tunic top This is an easy piece to wear over everything, from swimwear to leggings. It’s the perfect layering piece over tank tops. And it can double as a dress if it’s long enough. Just remember to consider the sheer factor. The cropped jacket The short jacket is another great layering piece to take along on vacation. In denim, it’s still got the cool, and, of course, the Moto-jacket in leather is the ultimate instyle even at the beach. If a jacket is too hot, then a cotton vest is a stylish alternative. The caftan The caftan is a glamorous way to dress in your free time — around the pool or at the beach. Choose an exotic print, and you may even want to wear it for dinner on the patio back home. A caftan will make you feel like a movie star no matter where you are. Flat sandals You may want to pack those pumpedup wedges for your trip, but when you’re stumbling over the rocky roads to the ruins at Tulum, Mexico, then you may wish you had your trusty sneakers. Athletic shoes and loafers have come a long way in the style department. And embellished flat sandals or sophisticated slides are sexier than ever. ∆

TAKING THE PLUNGE — From Pg. 29 hangtags. Many swimwear manufacturers have included details with sizing and body style information. Look at the label for fabric content. This can give you some invaluable tips to steer you in the right direction. Mix and match Two-piece suits can offer a myriad of versatile options when building a swim wardrobe. If you hit the beach for days at a time, then having several tops that can be interchanged with a variety of bottoms may be the way to go. This year, swim designers offer everything from athletic rash guard tops to ruffled bikini bottoms. Make it work While some of the “cutest” suits may have all the bells and beaded whistles, it’s important that fashion still functions, even
in swimwear. Think about where you will be wearing the swimsuit you buy. If you’re swimming laps every day at the gym, you’ll want to choose a suit with great support as well as coverage. Ditto for a surfer girl. For a lounge lizard relaxing under an umbrella on the beach, the beaded bikini may be just the thing. Think outside the pool There are always times when you may want to wear your swimwear, not only in the water but out of the water as well, from rafting down the river to dinner on the dock, from swimming at the beach to shopping on the shore. Cover-ups now range from flowing caftans to soft-knit maxi dresses to swim trunks and tank tops made just for women. Don’t be afraid to create your own swim wardrobe to suit yourself whatever the occasion. ∆

of what you enjoy about your work. With that understanding, though, you’ll be more motivated, productive, and satisfied. Core recommends completing the following exercise: • Focus on what gives you the greatest joy and meaning at work — be able to define it. • Reflect on how you are making a difference at work and through your work — be able to give examples. • Reflect on the meaning of your work as it relates to your core values. • And then… seek to increase what you enjoy! “You’ll come to find that the ‘administrivia,’ the mundane and routine chores required of you, and the not-so-exciting aspects of your work become easier to do and get completed more quickly if you have a strong focus on what you do find exciting, rewarding, or fulfilling,” Core promises.
Seek to serve, not shine To some extent, it’s human nature to look out for Number One. We all want to rack up accomplishments, receive accolades, and garner recognition. But in many situations, the desire to shine can cause you to get in your own way. “Ironically, the key to shining is putting others first,” Core explains. “People who channel their efforts toward making others’ lives easier are nearly always respected, included, and considered valuable. When you help others reach their goals and become their best, you’ll usually find that the same things happen to you.” Fill up your energy bank account so you can make withdrawals when you need Throughout life, circumstances arise that are beyond our control. Interior Decor Styles Rosemary Sadez Friedmann
I
f you are planning to decorate your home this season, here is a quick review of different interior design styles. Art Deco This is a rare interior design style that is truly retro. The Art Deco style combines elements of an antique culture with vibes from the 1920s and ‘30s. It’s quite exciting and eye-catching. Asian style This decor can be geared towards the simple, minimalist Japanese style, or the more luxurious and ornate Chinese style. Both have a strikingly attractive look, though they are quite different in feel. The Japanese style is a calm, relaxing, respectful look, while the Chinese style is dynamic and bold. Arts and Crafts This boasts of simple construction with a streamlined look and usually incorporates bold colors of the primary group. This style works quite well in children’s rooms. Classic Interior Design This look is stately. This style was inspired by the art and architecture of the Greek and the Roman empires. Picture columns and arches and balance for this look. Contemporary Decor by BoConcept.

The Contemporary look This design is often combined with the Modern look. Contemporary, meaning “at this time,” and Modern, meaning “new,” work well together. Usually these styles incorporate sleek and simple lines but remember, times and styles change so the look is subject to the current atmosphere and chic style. Country style
This decor invites calm and comfort. There is a simplicity to this style, and it can range from cottage country to French country. Both are delightfully quaint, inviting and homey. Rustic style
This look is inspired by the old West. Here again calm and warm are represented in a down-home, welcoming way. Cozy comes to mind when thinking of this style. The Southwestern
This genre is close to the Rustic style at times. Southwestern style is more Native
American and Spanish in its effect. The Tropical style This style comes with interesting looks of exotic aside retreats and beach-y looks. The colors are clean and bright. And the decor has a barefoot feel to it. Traditional interior design This style will always be in vogue. It is luxurious and attractive. It emphasizes beautiful patterned fabrics and finely crafted furniture details. Gothic style This design lets you create an almost enchanting look that allows your imagination to soar. Minimalist design This style consists of mostly the Contemporary look, but with less stuff, including less furniture and fewer accessories. Simple and clean is the look. That’s the quick and short of it all. Hope you found your favorite in these brief explanations. ∆

“
f you want to live and thrive, let the spider run alive.” This old saying attests to the role of spiders in controlling insect pests in gardens. These and other predatory insects can keep your garden happy and healthy all summer long. July - August 2014
There are a number of other predators considered beneficial to your garden because they are natural eaters of insect pests that plague our plants. For example, praying mantids are aggressive eaters of just about every bug they can catch. Ladybugs are notorious for consuming aphids from the leaves of plants. These good bugs are the gardener’s friend because they are directly linked to a proper balance of predator and prey. An infestation occurs when a single kind of insect flourishes to abnormally massive populations because natural control organisms have vanished. Such disappearance often follows the use of chemical pesticides, and even some botanically based ones such as pyrethrin. When broadcast over flowers or food plants, they kill most everything, even pollinating bees. In the aftermath, a few pests enter your garden and then reproduce in prodigious numbers because there are no predators left to thin them out. As temperatures rise, you will encounter insects in your garden. It’s vital that you learn to identify the major players in this age-old drama before applying any sort of 48

controls. There’s a tendency for new gardeners to see bugs and freak out because they think such a presence spells the end of their crops. The opposite may, in fact, be true. If those bugs are predators, you’re in a great place. If they’re plant-damaging earwigs, squash bugs, aphids, scale or caterpillars, then you need more predators. At GardenInsects.com, there’s an excellent, well-illustrated list of the most common plant pests as well as the beneficials that prey on them. You want to protect these good bugs. Most garden centers carry live beneficial insects during the growing season. Buy them to release to pump up your predator populations. Ladybugs are the most fun for you and the kids to learn this important lesson, as they hunt down aphids with a vengeance. You can also buy hard egg cases for mantids that you set in a protected location until they hatch out a gathering of hungry nymphs. These spread out through the garden to consume all the undesirables. If you’re unfortunate enough to 70 Praying mantids may look scary, but they're the most effective of all beneficial insects.

You can also choose a dwarf variety, which is well-suited to living in a container. Some of the most popular dwarf citrus trees to grow in containers are: Meyer lemon First imported from China in 1908, it is believed to be a cross between a lemon and a mandarin. The fruit has a very sweet flavor and is less acidic than a true lemon. Calamondin Prized for its attractive shape and foliage, it produces fragrant flowers nearly year-round. It is grown primarily for aesthetics and less for actual, edible fruit. Dwarf Kaffa lime tree The rind of the fruit and the doublelobed, aromatic leaves are often used in cooking.
Inspect the tree when it arrives to be sure the packing material is still moist and the roots are in good shape. As with any bare-root tree, make sure the roots never dry out before planting. To plant: • Use any kind of container as long as it has drainage holes and is an adequate size for the tree — 10 to 16 inches in diameter. • Fill the container with a light, welldrained potting mixture. Make a small mound in the center of pot and arrange the roots over the mound. Cover the roots with soil and tamp in lightly. • Leave the stake in place to help the tree remain sturdy while the roots become established. • Place in full sun, southern exposure. • Water to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. • Fertilize with a formula high in nitrogen with trace minerals. ∆

id you know that calcium does not combat osteoporosis? What’s worse, it promotes fatal conditions like heart disease and cancer.
Thomas E. Levy, MD, author of Death by Calcium: Proof of the Toxic Effects of Dairy and Calcium Supplements, addresses myths about calcium that may be costing you your good health, and even your life. From childhood on, we’ve all heard it: “Drink your milk.” “Milk does a body good.” “You never outgrow your need for milk.” And most of us have accepted these “truths” at face value. We know that calcium is necessary in a host of bodily functions and that it builds strong bones and teeth. So after each

milk mustache, cup of yogurt, or calcium supplement, we mentally pat ourselves on the back for helping stave off osteoporosis and general physical deterioration. If some is good, more must be better. Right? Wrong! Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD, says that calcium is not bringing about the desired benefits; its actively sabotaging our health. “Yes, calcium is essential for bodily function, but as many non-mainstream healthcare practitioners have long known, there’s a real and grave danger in pumping excessive amounts of it into our bodies,” Dr. Levy addresses eight dangerous myths about calcium and osteoporosis you probably accept as fact: Myth 1: Calcium is good for you There’s a reason why no one questions the popular wisdom that calcium is good for you: It seems completely plausible. After all, aren’t bones largely composed of calcium? Isn’t osteoporosis a calcium deficiency of the bone? It makes sense that drinking milk or downing calcium tablets will fix the problem! “What people don’t realize is that while osteoporosis involves a lack of calcium in the bones, it does not mean that there is a calcium deficiency in the rest of the body or in the patient’s diet,” explains Dr. Levy. “And moving on from osteoporosis, excess calcium promotes a host of other health problems including heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and virtually all chronic diseases. In fact, it increases all-cause mortality by 250 percent. Myth 2: You need to eat dairy products to get enough calcium If the government’s recommended daily allowance (RDA) of calcium—between 1,000 to 1,300 mg per day for most adults— were correct, loading your diet with dairy products would be an easy way to reach that goal. However, says Dr. Levy, not only is the government’s RDA far too high, the idea that you need dairy to get “enough” July - August 2014
calcium is false. “Cultures that drink little to no milk have a much lower incidence of osteoporosis than Americans,” he shares. “Actually, the average person’s need for calcium is more than adequately met with a diet that includes meat, eggs, and vegetables. Myth 3: If you have osteoporosis, you have a calcium deficiency This statement isn’t entirely incorrect: If you have osteoporosis, you do have a calcium deficiency—in your bones. Because of this fact, many physicians and their patients believe that the entire body must be depleted of calcium as well. But that’s a dangerous assumption. Throughout the rest of your body, it’s actually likely that you have an excess of calcium. “The problem with osteoporosis is that the body is unable to synthesize a new structural bone matrix and integrate calcium into it—an issue that more calcium doesn’t even begin to fix!” explains Dr. Levy. “In fact, much of the calcium leached from the bones simply moves to other parts of the body, where it does you harm. It’s both ironic and sad that because of this fundamental misunderstanding, so many motivated, health-conscious people are sabotaging their health in an effort to improve it.” Myth 4: Calcium supplements will help prevent broken bones Yes, there are studies that indicate that calcium supplementation is effective in decreasing the incidence of fractures in osteoporosis patients. But if you look more closely, says Dr. Levy, you’ll uncover more questions than answers. Notably, most positive studies also included 800 or more units of vitamin D as a “co-supplement.” Vitamin D, by itself, will decrease the chances of osteoporotic fracture. “In some trials the number of subjects was very small, in others the duration was short, and in still others patient and observer bias wasn’t tempered by
54
double-blind placebo control,” he comments. “Plus, some studies relied on the accuracy of the subject’s self-observation and memory, which is questionable. Could you accurately remember how much calcium you’ve taken over the past ten years (or even one year)? On the other hand, in Death by Calcium, I cite numerous studies that collectively provide more than enough data to conclude: Calcium supplementation does not prevent bone fractures. “Remember, it’s easy for various individuals and organizations to pick and choose the study results they’d like the public to believe, knowing that most people will take that information at face value,” he adds. Myth 5: Increased bone density means stronger bones Let’s say that you have a rotting wooden fence bordering your yard. If you paint it with a new coat of bright white paint, it will look better, but the “fix” is only cosmetic—the fence’s underlying structure is still continuing to deteriorate. That’s essentially what happens when you use calcium supplements to treat bone density. Your bone density test score may well improve
a bit with calcium supplementation, but this is not associated with stronger bones or a decreased risk of fracture. “When you treat a disease like osteoporosis with increased calcium, the density can legitimately increase, but the quality of the bone itself doesn’t improve unless other important factors are addressed,” explains Dr. Levy. “The structural matrix of the bone still isn’t normal and has no greater resistance to fracture than the diseased bone before the new calcium deposition.” Myth 6: When you have osteoporosis, the biggest danger is breaking a bone There’s no disputing that when a person with osteoporosis fractures a bone, it’s serious business. These fractures often cause incapacitation and other complications that may lead to death. But would you say that sustaining a fracture is more serious than suffering (or even dying) from a heart attack, stroke, or cancer? These are often the unrecognized consequences of osteoporosis. “A groundbreaking study made it very clear that a fracture is not the major concern for a majority of osteoporosis 63

t and Get In Shape
Dottie DeHart
“Not only can you get in shape this summer, but you can look and feel sexier than you ever thought possible,” says Dr Carmella Sebastian (aka Dr. Carm) author of the new book Sex and Spaghetti Sauce: My Italian Mother’s Recipe for Getting Healthy and Getting Busy in Your 50s and Beyond. Dr. Carm shares practical ways to lose weight, get in shape, and rediscover your confidence this summer.
On Eating Find a balance between “I’m never eating a carb again” and “where’s the doughnut shop?” One of the gifts of being, well, mature is that you know yourself pretty well. You’re not going to stick to a rigid breadfree, sugar-free, fat-free (and flavor-free) diet forever. Are you? We humans aren’t meant to deprive ourselves of major food groups—or even of a reasonable amount of culinary satisfaction—indefinitely. That’s why Dr. Carm urges you to think about healthy eating as a lifestyle change, not a “diet.” “Change your eating habits, but make it sustainable,” she warns. “Even if results happen more gradually than you’d like, sticking to a handful of healthy eating habits (like the ones shared here) and staying focused on your wellness goal will serve you better than obsessing over a rigid diet plan with unrealistic promises.”
Know how much is too much Much of the time our problem isn’t that we’re eating the wrong things; it’s that we’re eating way too much. You’ve probably heard the depressing facts before: Three to four ounces of protein is enough, and is about the size of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand. And one ounce of cheese is roughly the size of your thumb. “Portion distortion is everywhere,” says Dr. Carm. “Most people are shocked when they learn what recommended serving sizes actually look like! To help you get used to the ‘correct’ portion sizes, I recommend investing in a small kitchen scale. And if you’re experiencing ‘size shock,’ try serving yourself on a salad plate with a smaller fork. It’s an optical illusion, like wearing black! And it works. You will eat less.” Choose the fruits and veggies of summer Take advantage of the seasonal bounty in your area and fill up on the recommended seven servings of fruits and veggies per day. Not only will fresh produce be a welcome change for your taste buds, it will also help you achieve your get-inshape goals. “When you’re at the farmers’ market or in the produce section of your superstore, think variety and color,” Dr. Carm suggests. “Add more greens, reds, yellows, and oranges to your basket. Try seasonal
57
Hi Class Living
vegetables that may be new to you. Mix them up and experience wonderful new flavors and textures. And don’t forget about fragrant spices and fresh herbs! These seasonings have no calories and can transform simple, healthy ingredients into exciting dishes.” Savor each bite Summer is a season of slowing down: watching a sunset from your porch, taking a vacation, basking by the pool, etc. So why not extend that attitude to mealtimes? “Eat slowly,” Dr. Carm suggests. “Take sensual pleasure in the taste and texture of your food and the knowledge that your healthy diet is one of the building blocks of your wellness potential. You’ll enjoy your food more and be more aware of when you’re feeling satisfied.” Have a BBQ battle plan Despite its fresh produce and leisurely mealtimes, the upcoming season has one major pitfall: food-centric get-togethers. Dealing with tables full of tempting treats might be your downfall for barbeques and cookouts. That’s why Dr. Carm recommends planning ahead so that you can hit the food line with a strategy. “First of all, if you are heading out to a party and you know that the food will be fatty, sugary, and salt-laden, eat a big salad before you go,” she urges. “Then, scope out the buffet and fill a small plate with tastes of the dishes that make you salivate most. Once you get to the drink table, watch the booze! Keep your intake reasonable. Finally, if you are going to be attending the gathering with a spouse or friend, ask that person to watch your intake and keep you honest.” Drink to shrink Water. Water. Water. Repeat that to yourself. Water should be your beverage of choice this summer and every season!. Try to drink six to eight glasses a day. Keep water on your desk to sip while you’re working and within reach when doing July - August 2014
your chores. Have a bottle in your car. Take it with you to the park and to the pool, and definitely make sure you take a bottle of H2O with you whenever you’re exercising. If you do decide to have a drink at the end of the day (for which I wouldn’t blame you), stick to a one to two drink maximum. That’ll add up to about 300 to 400 calories, depending on the drink.” Know your weaknesses Don’t keep “bad habit” foods around. You know what they are! Clear them out of your cabinets and stop buying them. If you don’t have that big bag of chips in your house, you’re probably NOT going to run out to the store to buy them. Don’t worry: The craving will pass. “If you tend to snack on chips at night, reach for fruit, munch-worthy vegetables, or have a handful of nuts instead,” Dr. Carm says. “And banish the ‘Terrible Trio’ now and forever. That’s saturated fat, processed foods, and refined sugars—especially those found in soda and other bottled beverages. Nothing there but empty calories.” Cut yourself some slack One thing is for sure: At some point between now and summer’s end, you’re going to slip up. No matter how strong your willpower is, you’re going to cave and eat a whole pint of frozen yogurt in one sitting. Or no matter how much you want to get in shape, you’re going to give in to temptation and order one of the most calorie-laden entrées on your favorite restaurant’s menu. “When that happens, be kind to yourself,” says Dr. Carm. “We all fall off the wagon every now and then. When it’s your turn, don’t beat yourself up. Simply be very careful the next day and reaffirm your healthy intentions. Things will balance out. Studies have shown that if you eat well 80 percent of the time, you can eat some of the bad stuff during the other 20 percent and still be very healthy.”
58
On Exercising Stop taking the easy way out You don’t need an expensive gym or piles of equipment to burn calories and tone your muscles. What you do need is a degree of focus and commitment. Opportunities to exercise are everywhere, especially now that the weather is getting warmer! You just need to take those opportunities instead of avoiding them. “Okay, it’s a cliché, but stop passing the staircase in favor of the elevator,” Dr. Carm recommends. “Quit circling the grocery store parking lot and just pull into a space at the back already! Pull out your weed eater and rev it up yourself instead of paying the teenager next door to do it for you. Take walking breaks instead of coffee breaks. If you incorporate extra steps and extra movement into whatever you do, you’ll find those steps may add up to a half an hour or more of extra exercise each day. Remember, staying fit is about staying moving.” Walk your way to confidence Even if your exercise regimen centers on body sculpting classes, weight training, yoga, or spinning, Dr. Carm says you should also make concentrated walking part of your day. And if aches, pains, or injuries prevent you from doing anything too extreme, walking by itself can be a surprisingly effective weight control tool if you do it regularly. “Start with 30 minutes, three times a week,” she instructs. “Build up to 30 to 60 minutes at a time, three times a week. If you have time and energy to walk more often or more frequently, that’s even better. You’ll find that being outdoors is actually enjoyable! Do whatever works for you—some people enjoy first-thing-inthe-morning walks, while others prefer evening jaunts. You may even choose to bring athletic shoes to work so that you can walk during your lunch breaks.”
Let your walks double as bonding time You’re much more likely to keep up healthy habits if someone is holding you accountable. Plus, walking with someone is far less boring than hoofing it alone simply because you can talk a bit. So grab a friend, partner, neighbor, or even your pet when you head out for a walk. “Of course, don’t just amble along chatting,” says Dr. Carm. “Make sure to get your heart pumping and your breathing rate up, even if it interferes with your conversation. And look at group exercise this way: It’s a great opportunity to bond with people (and animals!) you love the most. I’ve found that the more years I have under my belt, the more close relationships matter to me.” or use them as an opportunity to rock out! If you’re a lone walker, consider bringing along your smartphone or mp3 player. Pre-loaded with your favorite tunes, it can be an excellent walking companion. Not only will music make this sometimesdreary task fly by, but you might even find yourself “busting a few moves” — and burning some additional calories—on your neighborhood’s sidewalk! “A classic song with a great beat — and even better memories — can get you moving and keep you moving. If you don’t want to spend money recreating the playlists of your youth or creating new ones for today, there are all sorts of free music apps that you don’t need to be a tech wizard to use. As you work on getting healthier, remember to start small. Keep in mind that lasting and successful change is all about sustainability. Work on eradicating one bad habit, then add a good one to replace it, then move on to the next change. If you start taking baby steps now, says Dr. Carm, you might be surprised by how good you look and feel when it’s time to slip into that swimsuit! ∆

with weights promotes strength, builds bone and prevents falls. Growing older is always accompanied by gradual loss of muscle mass that is replaced by fat. Despite gaining weight from about age 25 onward, we also lose muscle, so that at 50, our total muscle mass is about 70 percent of that at age 30, and by 80, half of our peak muscle mass has been lost. Total body weight remains constant as loss of muscle is replaced by even more fat. Thus, even if your weight has remained totally constant for decades, you will have proportionally more fat at age 60 than you did at 25. Although muscle-mass loss is in part because of inactivity, a major reason is an alteration in a primitive muscle cell called a myocyte. When muscle fibers are lost or damaged, myocytes proliferate, differentiate and replace them. With age, myocytes loose their ability to repair damaged
61

muscle, which leads to loss of muscle mass. Muscle loss causes weakness that has profound implications. Weak muscles lead to weak bones and osteoporosis. Weak muscles together with alterations in tendons and ligaments contribute to the joint instability that causes osteoarthritis. Muscle weakness, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis contribute to difficulties with gait and balance, an inability to walk without assistance, and eventually, to a dreaded fall. And remember more older people die of falls and fractures than from prostate, breast and colon cancers combined. There are other negative consequences of reductions in muscle mass. Muscle is the most metabolically active component of the body. Decreased muscle means profound reductions in energy or calorie needs. So, older persons consume less food, less protein, and less vitamins and minerals each day. And yet, the requirement for protein and most vitamins and minerals actually increases with age. Less food and nutrient intake, and less protein lead to a much higher risk of severe malnutrition, particularly if nutritional needs are increased by the presence of a serious illness. Another untoward effect of less muscle and more fat is the development of insulin resistance that impairs the ability of the hormone to deliver glucose to the cell, which, in turn, can cause diabetes. While we cannot stop the muscle loss that accompanies aging or, as yet, return the bones of an 80-year-old woman to those of a teenage athlete, we can make bones stronger and reduce all the negative effects of age-related muscle loss merely by exer-
cising. Research over the past 30 years has shown that even in 90-year-olds, resistance training, or exercising with weights, can increase strength by substantially increasing muscle and bone mass, improving metabolism, increasing food intake and even improving mood. More importantly, gait and balance are dramatically improved, leading to an 80 percent reduction in fall and fracture risk. Something as low-tech as exercising with weights can prevent dependency and most notably, save billions in health care costs while simultaneously improving quality of life. Weight training has become an integral part of the rehabilitation of older persons who are unable to get around. It is also one of the key ways to prevent frailty and dependency in old age. To be effective, the weight used must be sufficient that the muscle being exercised is virtually exhausted after eight to 10 repetitions. I do not recommend buying weights and exercising at home. In general, most don’t exercise adequately, are more prone to injury and do not sustain the effort. Weight training must be done under the supervision of a trainer or a physical therapist, at least until you have learned the ropes. No matter the disability, be it a previous stroke, joint disease or other medical problem, there is a program that can be designed to meet your needs. I strongly recommend that no matter your age, you join a health club and begin both an aerobic and resistance training program. Not only will the quality of your life improve but also your risk of many illnesses will reduce. And believe it or not, your life will be prolonged. ∆

Where it’s dry or dusty, you may discover webby evidence of spider mites hiding on the backs of leaves. Make sure to spray water from the ground up to get them, too. Once the worms eat some leaves with the bacteria, it causes stomach atrophy and they die quickly. Again, no toxicity to humans or animals.
