Rituals To Marriage Brent Bradley
I
t’s the unique rituals which you and your partner develop and nurture over the course of your life together, that make your relationship meaningful.
“There’s nothing wrong with big romantic gestures , but really, they’re just a start,” says Bradley, coauthor along with Furrow of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy for Dummies. “What couples need are regular shared activities to create memories, stories, and experiences.” Whether it’s a regular date night or a weekly tennis match, these events when repeated over time can provide a deeper sense of unity and mark what’s unique about you as a couple, he explains.

“It’s so critical to make time for rituals,” adds Furrow. “People think they can’t because they’re working 60 hours or shuttling kids around 24/7, but many rituals take very little time. You just need to be intentional and commit to them. They give meaning to your relationship in a way that no culturally sanctioned gift given on a manufactured ‘holiday’ ever could.” Here are ten examples of rituals you might try:
need direction. Finding examples from the past may give you new ideas for the future. Being intentional about sharing expectations keeps you tuned into the needs and desires of your partner.”
Say hello and goodbye Greeting rituals can be an important and brief way of communicating love and dedication to your partner. “These repeated gestures of importance can be as simple as a hug, kiss, or special word or phrase used when saying hello or goodbye,” states Bradley. “Some couples develop more elaborate or distinctive ways that signal to one another that they’re special. The key is that the gestures are consistent — they become part of a couple’s own language of love.” For example, Carolyn and Nathan have a “secret handshake.” It involves a number of movements in sequence and ends with three squeezes. These squeezes signal the words “I love you.” They do the handshake at the airport when departing or in front of their kids when they feel like it. It’s a sign of affection, and it’s unique.
Or at least set aside time to talk Couples with small children or limited resources often find it difficult to get away for a date night. In these cases, setting aside 15 minutes to talk on a regular basis is more realistic. If this is a better option for you, find a consistent time that both of you can count on. Set boundaries—for example: • No interruptions. • No electronic devices. • No discussions of work or children. Your goal is to keep the time focused on each other. Keep the time manageable but also meaningful. “If you’re wondering what you’ll talk about, you’re normal,” says Bradley. Start with quantity, and trust that the quality will show up. For some couples, just ten minutes in the same space without stress and demands reminds them of what’s good in life. “When you feel pressured and the ritual feels forced, trust the process,” he insists. “Setting aside a period of time without demands and with your partner can give you a breather — even if it isn’t the most romantic 15 minutes of your day.”
Schedule nights out alone If you’re busy or you’ve fallen into a routine that’s all about work and family, taking time to schedule a night out — for just the two of you — can be a proactive step in easing the demands of a timestarved relationship. “The key,” says Furrow, “is to be consistent and intentional, even if it is one night a month.” Making an appointment for your relationship means you’re giving it priority. Keeping semi-regular times out means keeping your relationship a priority. “After you’ve made time for your night out, take time to talk about what would make the time special,” he says. “Think about your most memorable dates, if you
Put it in writing Writing a note or sending a card tells your partner that he or she is important to you and on your mind. Whether it’s a text message, e-mail, or handwritten note, written expressions of affection show your partner that they count. “These notes often mean more when you’re separated by time or distance,” Furrow declares. “When you tuck a note into your partner’s suitcase before they head out on a business trip, it can be a welcome surprise for your partner. It shows that you’re intentional and that you’re thinking about them. This simple action can trigger feelings of love and affection, even though you aren’t in the same 36

What College Admissions Officers Want To See Marissa Madill
H
igh school students can get into the college of their dreams. All it takes is gumption, advanced planning, and guidance. Students frequently want to know what colleges are looking for. The reality is, there is no one perfect combination. Colleges want a range of students to create a diverse campus community, so students need to present themselves as a whole, showing off their own unique mix of qualities in the best way possible. Counselor Mandee Heller Adler, author of the book From Public School to the Ivy League: How to Get into a Top School Without Top Dollar Resources, offers the following advise for students: Choose the right high school classes Take classes that are a challenge, including AP and IB, when possible. If a student takes classes that are all easy, this will not be very impressive. Students need to challenge themselves but not to the extent they are hurting themselves grade-wise. Students must also meet all high school course requirements for their chosen college and to meet statewide graduation requirements in order to earn a diploma. Get to know the college counselor High school counselors can help students with their big picture planning for the future, including academic advising,

college planning and personal counseling. College counselors are also needed for the all important college application letters of recommendation. Make an appointment to see a school counselor at least once each year, including freshman year. The goal is to try to build a relationship with the high school counselor during the four years of high school. During the meeting talk about interests and goals. The more the school counselor knows about a student, the more he or she can help. Many public school students do not know their advisor, being proactive will make a student stand out. Keep the grades up Make a commitment to work hard for the good grades. Students who find themselves falling behind should get help — before they fall too far behind. Grades count and schools look for students who have challenged themselves and expressed a passion for learning. There is a classic question, is it better to get an A in a regular class or a B in an AP class? The real answer is it is best to get an A in an AP class. For the majority of students, good grades are entirely necessary to get into a good school. Schools are looking for a positive pattern. In the best-case scenario, a student maintains good grades throughout his or her high school career. Though, if the grades started off badly and then improved, colleges give points for this. If grades are too low or show a steady decline, then a student is in real trouble. Spending a night studying while friends go out may not be exciting, but the path to college needs to be looked at with a long-term perspective. Take standardized tests early At most highly selective colleges, SAT or ACT tests are very important. The schools are looking to see if test score are consistent with — or exceed — a student’s high school performance. No student knows how high his or her score can go until the test results come in. But, if a May - June 2014
student waits too long and does not get a desired score, there won’t be enough time to retake it. Many unexpected circumstances can affect test scores on any given day, including the state of a student’s health. (It’s impossible to plan not to get food poisoning.) Taking the test early will also allow time to take a test prep course if necessary. Most students take the SAT and-or ACT at least twice and improve their score the second time they take it. Students must also make sure to schedule test days for the SAT Subject Tests. Most students take Subject Tests toward the end of junior year or at the beginning of senior year. The best time to take the tests is as soon as possible after completing the course in the subject. Do your homework and try hard No matter what the class, even one with a loathsome teacher and boring subject matter, students need to do their homework, try hard, and behave. Keep the eyes on the prize: college. Plus, teachers are where college recommendation letters come from so you want to impress them. Engage in the right mix of extracurricular activities Admissions officers are looking for commitment and impact in a student’s activities. It is better to be highly involved in one to three activities and-or sports over a number of years, than less involved in many activities. Anyone can join 10 clubs and be marginally involved in them all. Schools are looking for a student to demonstrate the willingness to stick with something and make the most of it. Schools are not so interested in hearing about passions; they want to see them proven! Once a student finds the activities he or she wants to focus on, the next step is to work on becoming a leader or to demonstrate initiative.

Lisa Collier Cool at Yahoo Health highlighted the reasons some people are mosquito magnets: According to a Japanese study, mosquitoes are roughly twice as likely to be attracted to people with Type O blood as they are to those with Type A. drinking even a single beer can increase your mosquito magnetism. Mosquitoes have a foot fetish, especially for dirty ones. One test had 75 percent flocking toward unwashed feet. The Smithsonian magazine hypothesized that mosquitoes are especially prone to biting our ankles and feet because “they naturally have more robust bacteria colonies.” According to a study conducted in Gambia, pregnant women are twice as likely to be bitten by mosquitoes as men are. Researchers speculate the reason is that pregnant women increase their breathing by 21 percent. In doing so, they exhale more carbon dioxide – an attractant to mosquitoes. (They can detect carbon dioxide from 164 feet away.) Similarly, those who run or exercise are greater attractants to mosquitoes because their increased sweat, lactic acid and breathing are a lure to the flying bloodsuckers. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, mosquitoes are 500 times more active when the moon is full, peaking at dusk and dawn. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark clothing. The darker the more alluring. Researchers categorized clothing colors’ appeal to mosquitoes in this way: “black (most attractive); red (very attractive); grey and blue (neutral); khaki, green, light khaki, and yellow (less attractive).” University of Florida entomology professor Phil Koehler concludes: “Both your
metabolism and your unique body chemistry – which is as distinctive as a fingerprint – play an important role in determining whether or not you’re a mosquito magnet. Also, there’s evidence that your degree of attractiveness to mosquitoes can change over time.” So here’s what you can do naturally to ward off those vampire insects at any point in your life, and it starts with minimizing the attractants mentioned above when you can: • Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. • Wear socks and shoes at night to cover your feet. • Avoid beer consumption, especially at night outdoors. • Avoid outdoor activity at night that would increase your breathing or sweating. • If you see a full moon, consider enjoying an alternative indoor activity. In addition to those anti-mosquito measures, you might try adding these novel repellents to your yard or porch, according to Fox News Magazine: herbs such as basil, lemon grass and rosemary; marigolds; tea tree oil; catnip; garlic; bats; and frogs. Though not a super-powerful detractor, eating garlic, according to Colorado State University researchers, also might help keep mosquitoes off your skin. Of course, the downside is that it might ward off females of another species, too! ∆

Do You Kn About Your Fa
I
n every couple, there’s usually one person who takes the financial lead, and that makes sense. We all have our own talents and interests, and handling finances may come more naturally to one person than the other. But, even if your husband is handling the details, it’s essential you also have complete knowledge of your family’s financial matters – both large and small. Keeping you in the loop is not only essential, it’s a sign of respect. And hopefully, your husband won’t interpret your interest as a threat or vote of no confidence, but more like making sure you have each other’s backs. BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR INTEREST AND YOUR PURPOSE
Because you’ve been content in the past to let your husband take the financial lead, it’s possible he will see your new interest as somehow questioning the way he’s been handling things. Make sure he understands that you’re not doubting his ability or asking him to give up control. You’re just asking to be a partner in a very important part of your life May - June 2014

together – for the well-being of both of you. PUT IT IN THE CONTEXT OF YOUR MUTUAL GOALS One easy way to start the money conversation is to talk about your plans for the future. What do you each want to accomplish? Where do you want to travel? What’s your retirement scenario? This isn’t just about money; it’s about your dreams. But it does take money and a certain amount of financial planning to achieve them. Talking about your life goals could be a good way to open the door to your greater personal involvement in helping to plan and save for them. SHOW HIM YOU’RE SERIOUS BY ASKING THESE QUESTIONS To plan and save wisely, you need to understand what you have, what you owe, and how you’re protecting yourselves. Your husband may initially feel that it’s too much of an effort to explain everything, so make it easier for him by having a concise list of questions. Start by asking about your: • Net worth. This is a look at what you own (home equity, investment accounts, retirement savings) minus what you owe (mortgage, outstanding credit lines, car loans, credit card balances). Are you in the plus? • Monthly cash flow. How much money comes in each month, and how much goes out? Is there a deficit or surplus? Could you save more? • Insurance coverage. What type of health, life, homeowners and automobile insurance do you have? Are you adequately covered? Are these private policies or sponsored by an employer? • Retirement savings. How much are you saving each year? Do you know how much you need? Are you on target? • Employee benefits. Does your husband have outstanding employee stock options or restricted stock? Does he have accrued vacation or sick pay? • Estate plan. Do your wills and trusts reflect your current wishes? Are your beneMay - June 2014
ficiary designations up-to-date, and do you have the appropriate powers of attorney in place for both health and financial matters? Showing that you have a basic understanding of what you should know may make your husband more willing to discuss your overall finances. He may even be pleased to demonstrate how he’s set everything up. DIG A LITTLE DEEPER INTO THE DETAILS Having the big picture is important, but if something should happen to your husband, it’s equally important – if not more so – to know where your money is and who to turn to for help and advice. I suggest creating a few lists to help you find this information quickly. These would include: • Advisers. Contact information for your financial adviser, tax accountant, attorney, insurance agent or any other advisers. Suggest setting up an introductory meeting if you haven’t yet met these people. • Accounts. All your investment and bank accounts, with account numbers, locations and how much is in each. If these accounts are handled online, you should also have a list of online IDs and passwords. • Documents. Where to find important documents – in other words, loan papers, wills, trusts and insurance policies. If your husband also handles paying the everyday bills, perhaps you could suggest setting up automatic payments if he hasn’t already done so. That way, neither of you has to worry about them. KEEP TALKING Once you’re both comfortable talking about your finances, keep the conversation going. Continue to ask questions and let him know you want to be a teammate in all major financial decisions. Your husband may find that rather than being a chore or a threat, sharing financial challenges and responsibilities – and respecting each other’s input – gives you both a greater sense of security. ∆

P
rints are having a huge moment this spring and summer. Fashion designers are showing giant flowers, abstract graphics, artsy color blocks and fresh ginghams. But pulling off this popular trend can be a horror story, especially when it comes to mixing and matching totally different patterns. Here are some ways you can choose the right prints for the season ahead. Think proportion If you’re petite, then you may want to stick to smaller prints; larger sizes tend to look better in larger patterns. Unless you are a larger-than-life diva, beware of those huge chiffon ponchos covered with hothouse florals. You’ll be blooming in the wind.
Boa pant by BCBG MaxMara at Bloomingdale’s. May - June 2014
Think contrast If you do like bolder, bigger prints, then remember that subtle contrasts in color will be more complementary. Strong contrasts in color will definitely make more of a statement — just make sure it’s the statement you want to be making. 30

Think scale Wider spaces mean wider places. Oversized prints like giant gingham squares on a light background will definitely give you a larger-than-life presence — and that can be good or bad. If you like the bold prints, stick to wearing one piece at a time, mixing it in with other solid pieces. Mix it up One of the freshest trends this spring is mixing and matching prints and patterns. When it looks good, it looks great — otherwise try this new look with caution. Many designers give you plenty of direction in their collections. Follow their lead. Mixing stripes with florals can be tricky, but it has a very modern vibe when done right. Stick to a color palette If you do like mixing prints, then there is one rule to follow that usually yields stylish results: Unify your pieces with similar colors. For example, mix blue and brown checks with blue and brown stripes. Ditto for florals. You can even mix several colors, just make sure they are generally in the same color family. Make prints work for you Prints and patterns can also be used to accent your positive body features. If you’re larger on top, then keep your prints below the waist. Bottom-heavy? Wear your patterns on top to distract from the lower part of your body. Spring wedding, anyone?
All-over prints like pastel florals are especially popular in dresses right now, and

they look best when worn in silhouettes that fit close to the body. There’s nothing worse than a bad floral print that swallows you up from head to toe and looks like you borrowed the curtains for a day. Go for classics Prints and patterns can become outdated fast. That color-blocked dress you wore to the cocktail party during the holidays will be memorable unless everyone had too many martinis. Include some classic prints
that never go out of style — like polka dots, checks and stripes. These favorites will last in your wardrobe for years. Keep accessories to a minimum If you’re wearing a splashy floral top, chances are no one is going to notice the necklace you have on. Make sure the shoes, handbag and jewelry you wear complement the prints and patterns you have on... not fight with them. Keep it simple. ∆

ressing for success in the workplace is a fashion fact of life. But a new season brings a fresh perspective. Here are new spring and summer trends to brighten up your work wardrobe: The white dress and pantsuit Talk about a refreshing change. This spring and summer, dressing in head-to-toe white is one of the fastest ways to update professional dressing. The belted shirtdress is a workday favorite. The little black dress becomes the little white dress! The colored jacket If you only feel like you’re really put together at the office when you wear a jacket, then this spring, you’re in luck. A new jacket, especially in a pastel shade, can give everything you wear, including sleeveless dresses, instant panache. Add monochromatic separates that blend with the color of your jacket, and you’ve got a whole new attitude. The colored cardigan Another way to top it off for warmer months. A little more casual than the jacket, these cardigans Diane Von Furstenberg goes all out in head-to-toe white for spring and summer. Photo courtesy beautypress.com. May - June 2014

can soften skirts and pants. Use color to change it up. Pair with white for a summery vibe. Pastels may be the newest way to do color, but black and white sweater sets can give you more classic options, too. The full skirt There’s a new proportion to spring and summer when it comes to skirts. Longer, mid-calf length skirts are turning up in fuller silhouettes. Pleated, flared skirts in soft fabrics detailed with unusual hemlines will give your old jackets and cardigans new life. The bootcut jeans Leggings and skinny jeans may be appropriate in casual workplaces, but tailored jeans worn with jackets and heels are now accepted in some more traditional offices. Dark denim washes are best ... distressed looks are best saved for weekends off. Jean jackets layered over printed skirts and dresses may also be a fresh look for very casual offices. The floor-grazing trousers A trendy way to wear the pants this season. These longer trousers can be tricky, however. If you like the look, wear heels and a more streamlined jacket or top. Just RITUALS — From Pg. 12 room (much less the same time zone). “These notes don’t have to be long — they just have to be personal,” he adds. “Let your partner know something that you’re thankful for or that you appreciate. make sure you’re not sweeping the office floor when you wear these. Tailored culottes may be a better option. The new blouse It can be a funky sheer top layered over a camisole or a more sophisticated silk tunic worn with a statement belt or a crisp oxford button-front tucked under a fitted jacket. There are plenty of ways to top off more-conservative separates this spring and summer. But beware the crop top that bares any skin... a definite no-no in most workplaces. The spring coat With still a few chilly days to go, the lighter weight spring coat can be a necessary part of a work wardrobe. The trench coat is a classic, but the three-quarter coat worn over sleeveless sheaths and shifts can be another alternative cover-up. Statement accessories The best way to add some personal flair to your work wardrobe is to add bold accessories: interesting necklaces, rings and bracelets. Mixed metallics are huge. Choose colorful handbags and shoes with architecturally inspired heels and see what kind of reviews you get at the office. ∆
your triumphs and defeats. You’ll also find the process of learning together rewarding. As you will improve your handicaps, you will reward each other. “Keeping a focus on learning and growing as a couple helps partners bring new energy and ideas to their relationship,” he adds. “Learning together can deepen a couple’s shared sense of accomplishment and the pride that goes along with it. Learning also involves taking risks, and that’s a good thing. Taking chances, failing, and succeeding brings couples together as they practice ways to support and celebrate their personal challenges and shared successes.” 54

Best-Dressed For Spring-Summer Sharon Mosley
T
here are lots of ways to be the best-dressed this year... no matter what the occasion. Here are some of the latest styles to dress up and down:
Dress up a shirtdress It’s one of the favorites this year, and it’s a classic silhouette that is a twist on its preppy predecessor that stood out in the ‘70s in crisp oxford blues and plaids. Don’t be surprised to see shirtdresses dressed up with lots of exotic embellishments. Dress down a slip dress Oh, the ease of it... just a long, lean column of silky elegance. The newest slip dresses — long or short — shimmer with metallic sheens. They can be dressed up, but pair them with Birkenstocks or leather ankle boots, and you’ve got real down-toearth diva style. Dress up a maxi dress Hemlines are coming down, and the floor-length maxi is back, even for cocktails. Experience the new little black dress in a sweeping fit-and-flare maxi dress with a high-low hem. Just add your dancing shoes. Dress down a sweatshirt dress What could be more comfortable? These new knit dresses are not only easy to wear, but they’re fun, too. Designers covered them up with whimsical prints and logos that give them standout personality.
Dress up a sheath dress The sleeveless sheath dress is a close cousin of the shift dress... but much more fitted. This year, the structured sheath is all dressed up with all-over lace: the perfect one-piece party dress. Dress up a wrap dress Another classic made famous by designer Diane von Furstenberg in the ‘70s. The flattering shape is updated with lots of colorful prints — from bold abstract artsy graphics to digitalized stripes and watercolor florals. Dress down a sporty dress Cheer on the varsity team with athleticinspired dresses in fabrics that stretch into body-conscious sculpted styles that often use color blocking to get their sportinspired messages across. Keep the accessories simple with this dress... no tennis shoes required. Dress up the coat dress One of the best ways to transition into warmer weather for the office or for a special occasion like a cocktail party. Choose a structured sheath to layer under a kneelength jacket. The all-white look is one of the season’s most sophisticated silhouettes. Pair with candy-colored accessories. ∆

f you have kids at home, you don’t have to wait until they leave to infuse your home with high style. There are lots of kidfriendly ways to make your home beautiful, despite the wear and tear that a family can bring.
Here are five tips for making your home look sensational and family-friendly: Dress Your Walls in Great Art If your kids are not at a stage of life where you can place accessories on your coffee table or end tables for fear of the accessories being broken, finish off your room by dressing your walls in imaginative artwork. Think of art as accessories that hang, instead of sitting on a tabletop. When it’s up on a wall, it’s safe from little hands, and unless it gets hit by a flying basketball, it won’t break. Start by getting your furniture placed exactly where you want it. Then fill in the open wall space with art that expresses your family’s spirit. What do you love? Tell May - June 2014

people through your artwork. It will not only become the focal point of your room, it will give people insight into what makes your family special. Use an Ottoman as a Coffee Table Coffee-table ottomans are attractive and perfect for little kids. Moms have told me that their babies learned to walk by scooting around a big ottoman. Others tell me their preschoolers like to curl up on top of the comfy ottomans, pop in their thumb and rest for a few minutes from their play. Now that is a family-friendly piece of furniture if ever there was one. One great feature of a coffee-table ottoman is that if your kids accidentally decorate it with markers, or spill grape juice on it, or just love it until it’s a bit threadbare, it can be re-covered. Another plus is that these ottomans look great with absolutely no decorations on top of them. Pick fabric that sports a fun pattern or arresting color, and you’re good to go. Some ottomans are tall enough for you to slide a storage basket filled with toys underneath, giving you bonus storage space. Don’t want the basket to show? Pick an ottoman with a skirt. Select Beautiful but Forgiving Fabrics The sky is the limit when it comes to kid-friendly upholstered furniture, thanks to the revolution in outdoor fabrics. Today’s outdoor fabrics are absolutely gorgeous, not at all the stiff and shiny and unattractive stuff we used to put on the chaise lounge on the patio. If outdoor fabric isn’t for you, put white fabrics on your furniture. I know – it may show dirt easier. But you can often clean up that little dribble of juice or pencil mark using a stain stick. If this doesn’t sound appealing, go for fabric that camouflages dirt. Dress up Windows One easy way to cozy up a room is by dressing windows with fabric panels. While there are always exceptions to the 50
Put Your Pretties up High Miraculously, some kids seem to never bother child-safe accents that are displayed on tables or other spots within their reach. But most kids like to investigate, so if you want to use accents in your interior decor – especially those that are breakable – they must be displayed where the kids can’t reach. If you love to decorate with breakables like plates and platters, mount the plates on the wall, above your kitchen cabinets or stove, where they can’t be knocked down by a flying Nerf ball. Another great place to decorate when your kids are very little is the fireplace mantel. Usually the mantel is the focal point of the room, so if you are able to dress it up, no one will notice if your side tables are undecorated. ∆ SPRING HANDBAG — From Pg. 47 The Fringed Bag Get ready to swing with a little fun this season. Detailed with long fringe and tassels, this bag is one of the hottest fashion accessories of the year. Think ‘70s with a Western flair. The Exotic Bag Got a special evening event coming up? Or just want to show off a little fun fashion spirit at work? Check out the latest embellished clutches trimmed with feathers, bohemian beads, embroidery, crystals and even artsy prints and florals. The Bold Bag It may be your evening clutch, or it may be your everyday bag, but the handbag du jour is a scene-stealer in bright color blocks or graphic prints. If you really want something that will wake up your wardrobe, look for a handbag in an eye-popping neon or candy pastel. ∆

Detox Your Body Chuck Norris
S
pring is the perfect time to rid your body of harmful chemicals and toxins that have accumulated during the winter months. Award-winning journalist Mike Adams reported that more than 95 percent of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise. According to Dr. Don Colbert, we all have toxins in our bodies. There are about 80,000 chemicals registered in the United States, with 2,000 being added each year. They are used for everything from food additives to prescriptions drugs, supplements, personal products — such as makeup and lotions — cleaning supplies and lawn care. Most people are aware that our food supply is polluted by herbicides, pesticides and chemicals, but not everyone knows that up to 2,100 chemicals are present in most municipal water supplies. Some ailments caused or exacerbated by these toxins include chronic fatigue, heart disease, memory loss, premature aging, skin disorders, arthritis, hormone imbalances, anxiety, headaches, emotional disorders, cancers and autoimmune diseases. The first thing we must realize about detoxifying is that our bodies are continuously filtering out contaminates and May - June 2014

corruptible elements. Some of the major filters in our bodies include our kidneys, liver, lungs, intestines, urinary tract, skin and sweat glands. Though we cannot completely avoid toxins, we can reduce the number of contaminants we put into our bodies and ensure optimal health and operation of our filtering organs. Here is some expert advice on how to detox your body: • Drink adequate amounts of water for flushing and filtering your body’s systems, especially because we’re made up of 70 percent water. • Eat green foods and take specific nutritional supplements to keep your liver (the body’s main detoxifying organ) healthy. • Eat organic foods. • Eat plenty of fiber — 25 to 30 grams per day — from foods such as 100 percent bran cereal, brown rice and organic fruits and vegetables. Particularly good are apples, broccoli, beets, cabbage, radishes, artichokes, spirulina and chlorella. Kilham noted that apples “have powerful antioxidants and pectin — and that cleanses the digestive system. Who doesn’t like apples? Eat one or two a day; that’s a good way to cleanse.” • Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as milk thistle, dandelion root and burdock and by drinking green or black tea. • Quit smoking or exposing yourself to environments of secondhand smoke. Any way you slice it, one of the worst habits for your health is smoking, with its extensive risks for cancer and other associated de-
bilitating diseases and conditions. Every year, more than 750,000 Americans die from cardiovascular diseases, and 550,000 die from cancer. About 450,000 die because they smoked. • Exercise in clean-air areas (gyms, beaches, hills, etc.). There’s a Danish proverb that says, “Fresh air impoverishes the doctor.” • Sweat, and brush your skin - and use sauna therapy. • Use natural products (and gloves when you don’t). • Clean the air in your home with air purifiers and live plants. • Fast using the juice of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. • Cut back on sugar. Prevention magazine reported: “Refined sugar causes a process called glycation, which can damage the collagen and elastin that keep skin firm and youthful. Try all-natural stevia, an easily digested herbal sweetener that doesn’t trigger glycation, according to board-certified dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD. God created an awesome filtering and waste management system in our bodies, but our organs are being tapped out and damaged by the extensive use of chemicals and contaminates throughout our society. If we want to preserve these amazing human machines, there’s no getting around it; we must better guard the entry points in our bodies from toxins and other adversaries and then optimize our organs to filter out the bad that infiltrates our bodies’ systems. In short, we must reset our bodies and detoxify! ∆
RITUALS— From Pg. 36 Invest in “relationship activities” Couples who have strong levels of dedication are more likely to be happier, more open, and have less conflict in their relationships. They’re more likely to take steps to improve and sacrifice for their
relationship. That’s because couples’ needs change over time. Intentionally addressing your relationship makes space to invest in the commitment you share. “Reading a book on relationships can spark new ideas for growth and improvement,” Furrow advises. “Sharing these ideas and participating in exercises 63

Download an App
If you have a smartphone or some applicable digital device, download one of the many fitness applications. (Most are free.) Many creative apps offer a complete and expert guide for various fitness plans, including diet, calories burned, tracking progress and motivational support. EmpowHER recommends “7 Minute Workout,” by Bytesize. Join an exercise or sports team Check with your community’s department of parks and recreation for sport leagues and even fitness classes utilizing pool workouts, yoga, tennis, dancing, baseball or soccer. Even some hospitals offer various fitness activities, especially for those with special needs or mobility issues. Organize a fitness group Undoubtedly, there are others around you who are interested in being physically fit and would benefit from partnering or being accountable to others. So consider organizing a work, church or neighborhood fitness group. You can tailor it to the group’s desires and your environment, whether you walk or bike along a lake or hike on local trails. Turn household chores into a fitness routine Think of all you have to do around your house, from common household cleaning to that project you’ve been putting off. If you pick up the pace even slightly or put ankle and wrist weights on while you do it, you can turn up your calorie and fat burning in a heartbeat and strengthen your heart and other muscles, too. Walking up and down a flight of stairs at home May - June 2014
is another wonderful aerobic exercise. Take advantage of online deals Online discount groups — such as Groupon, LivingSocial, BuyWithMe and Eversave — offer great deals on a host of fitness activities, such as kettlebell training, Pilates, rock climbing, scuba diving, yoga classes and sailing lessons. Check them out and you may find an exciting, fun and new way to exercise and meet new people at the same time. Boot camp workout These exercise regimen camps are based upon old-school military training and are popping up across the country and on the Internet. They vary but generally include a relatively intense mix of strength, endurance and aerobic training. Because of the degree of difficulty, however, the Mayo Clinic advises, “If you are older than age 40, are pregnant, haven’t exercised for some time or have health problems, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a boot camp class — or any new exercise program.” It doesn’t cost money to stay fit. You can do so by the simplest of activities. “Keeping it simple is OK,” explained Leslie Bernstein, Ph.D., professor and director of cancer etiology at City of Hope. Bernstein published her first paper linking physical activity to lower cancer risk roughly 20 years ago. EmpowHER quoted Bernstein as saying, “It has been established that regular exercise (about three to four hours per week) can lower the risk of colon cancer and, for women, the risk of breast cancer.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concurs that just 2 1/2 hours of modest exercise weekly can reduce your risk for serious chronic illness. And there are other benefits, too. It can lower stress, help you sleep, improve your mental mood, and strengthen bones and muscles. ∆ 58

Reasons To Make Sleep A Family Priority Tasha Mayberry
S
o you’ve given up caramel mochaccinos and you’ve bought a gym membership. But have you thought about improving your family’s sleep patterns?
May - June 2014

Dr. Rebecca Kempton, M.D., Family Sleep Institute Graduate, shares why getting better sleep should be a priority for your family.
stages of sleep. New research suggests that infants who get a large proportion of their sleep at night perform better at abstract reasoning tests at age 4.
Brain development The brains of infants grow constantly, including during sleep. But to develop and function properly, growing brains require repeated cycling through all the
Cognitive development Children who get sufficient sleep are better problem solvers, are more creative and flexible thinkers and have greater academic success. One recent study shows

that preschoolers who miss naps are less able to learn or recall information. Another study of high school students shows that teens with high academic achievement get an average of 30 minutes more sleep per night than do students with lower performance. Even adults perform better after a good night’s rest. Memory While snoozing, children’s brains are working overtime to file, store and even discard what they have experienced and learned. Subconsciously, they transform learned material into active knowledge. This process is especially effective in babies and toddlers because all their knowledge is so new. Muscle development For both adults and children, muscle development occurs almost exclusively during sleep. If infants and children do not sleep well at night, their muscles cannot develop as they should.Deep sleep triggers the release of a hormone that promotes normal growth, and it’s the same hormone that boosts muscle mass and helps repair cells and tissues in children, teens and adults Moods Brace yourself for the foul mood of a toddler who has missed a nap or the fussiness of an infant who has been passed around to too many family members for too long. We can all get a little grouchy when we don’t get enough sleep, but young children and babies have an especially low tolerance for lack of sleep. Recently, a study from the University of Colorado concluded that toddlers who get insufficient naps show more anxiety and frustration, less joy and interest and poorer understanding of how to solve problems. Behavior Anyone with a toddler who woke up a little too early, stayed up a little too May - June 2014
late or missed a nap knows the dreaded consequences: whines that escalate into supersonic, ear-shattering and teeth-jarring screams that make you want to run away and join the circus (as if that were an option). One excellent remedy is adequate sleep. In about a third of all cases, sleepdeprived behavior is even misdiagnosed as ADHD. Safety A Drexel University study found that sleep deprivation can cause cognitive impairment similar to that experienced by an intoxicated person. That’s scary, but it’s not surprising. After several nights of losing sleep (even just one to two hours’ worth), your ability to function suffers just as badly as it would if you hadn’t slept at all for two days. This is especially scary when you think about your injury-prone toddler who turns your living room into an Olympic stage and thinks nothing of torpedoing off the sofa when you’re looking the other way. Immunity Not only does sleep energize our body and brain, but it also kick-starts our immune system. In fact, adequate sleep can help protect children from infections that sometimes plague the rest of the family. Obesity Many studies now link obesity with sleep deprivation. The science points to impaired glucose control and inhibited hormone secretion as the main culprits. Also, kids who get less sleep are often more sedentary, spend more time watching TV and get less exercise. That can add unneeded pounds. Your sanity Need we say more? You just can’t function well for very long when you and your child don’t have good sleep patterns. You owe it to yourself and your family to start the new year on a healthy sleep track. ∆

RITUALS — From Pg. 54 provide practical resources for growing a stronger bond. Or you might attend workshops and retreats for couples. These retreats give couples time away to focus on each other and strengthen their commitment. Celebrate milestones even if that’s not your “thing” Planning and remembering special days like anniversaries and birthdays mark the importance of people and relationships over time. Making a special effort to express appreciation for your partner communicates how important they are in your life. This strengthens your bond. Oh, and just because you grew up in a family that didn’t make a big deal about these occasions, don’t assume the same is true of your partner. “Partners bring different family experiences to their relationships, and with these experiences come different expectations,” says Bradley. “A missed birthday or anniversary can be seen as a lack of care or concern. Taking time to discuss your different experiences and to share expectations can help you avoid hurt feelings and misunderstandings in the future.” Find an interest you can share Familiarity and boredom are intimacy killers. Securely attached couples find time to play together. Attachment rituals should be life giving to both of you. If not, it’s time to find a new ritual. “Vital couples find fun activities to share,” asserts Furrow. “Having fun together is a source of renewal and refreshment for them.” For example, physical activity can be energizing and provide you an opportunity to stay fit and healthy. Hiking, dancing, or sharing a sport offers you a chance to organize around activities that combine leisure time and companionship. “Other couples organize around common artistic interests such as concerts, culinary arts, or literature,” he adds.
“Others involve being fans of a sports team. Couples who are able to find a shared interest that they can invest in find new ways of investing in the bonds they share.” Serve others Helping others or give to those in need offers couples a unique opportunity to invest in their relationship. Serving a common goal helps a couple find a deeper sense of unity by transcending personal interests. When you dedicate your time or resources to others, you make a joint expression of your values. “Couples find many ways to serve,” says Bradley. “Some couples focus on caring for the environment, while others get involved in efforts to conserve and improve their communities. Volunteering as a couple expresses a common purpose that others see and affirm. Many couples share in religious and spiritual activities that involve helping others.” Make time for hugs, handholding, and sex
Making love is an important ritual of connection. Sexual contact in a relationship of care, trust, and vulnerability communicates a deep level of intimacy. Couples who keep a focus on each other and expressions of sexual affection find a greater meaning in these rituals than those who focus mostly on their sexual needs. Keeping romance in sex often requires couples to find ways of being intentional about expressing both their physical and emotional desires. “Of course, you don’t always have to have sex to show affection,” notes Furrow. “Everyday moments of sharing physical affection, like hugging, kissing, and holding hands, show partners that they’re important and special. Deliberate acts of affection are subtle and effective reminders of care and kindness and a demonstration that you hold a special place in each other’s life.” ∆ 63

Veranda Suite.
Outdoor Dining at La Terrazza.
We recently sailed on the Silver Spirit for a seven day voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Puerto Rico. Here are some impressions and highlights from our trip: Arrival and Embarkation As experienced cruisers we prefer to book air and ship transfers from the cruiseline. This way they are responsible for our timely arrival at the ship, regardless of airline or weather delays. Upon arrival at the Fort Lauderdale airport we are whisked to a private car for transfer to the ship. There is no waiting for other passengers from different flights. The check-in consists of a fast credit card swipe for incidental charges, and in just a few minutes we sip a “welcome aboard” cocktail and head to our suite. Exploring the Ship Our veranda suite on deck number eight is the epitome of luxury at sea. The 376 SF space is divided into a bedroom and a living room, and a floor-to-ceiling glass door leading to an intimate veranda. On one side of the suite there is a wall unit with plenty of shelves and cabinets, a writing desk, a stocked mini bar, and two in-mirror TVs. The bed is dressed with luxurious May - June 2014
Pratesi linens and with pillows that guests pre-select from a “menu” of 9 choices, including memory foam and buckwheat. A spacious marble and dark wood bathroom offers a full size tub, a glass enclosed rain shower, and a vessel sink with a builtin vanity unit with space for toiletries and medicines. An oversized walk-in closet/dressing room with shelves and drawers completes the suite’s amenities. A bottle of chilled Champagne awaits our arrival. As we survey our new home, our butler introduces himself and enquires about our preference of toiletries (Ferragamo, Bvlgari or SebaMd) and choice of drinks for the mini fridge. We start exploring the Silver Spirit, an intimate ship with a maximum capacity of 540 passengers. On the top deck some guests have already settled around the swimming pool, sipping frozen cocktails and taking in the sun. The lively bar hums as passengers chat over drinks and Illy cappuccinos and espressos. In a corner, a duo plays sail-away music. We continue our tour through the common areas. From the ship’s central atrium we access the well stocked library, com-

The ship is immaculate, elegantly decorated in taupe and burgundy colors, accented with artwork, and dotted with white orchids. Dining A great cruise is often defined by the dining experience on board and Silversea is known for its gastronomic excellence. The main dining venue is The Restaurant, a spacious room elegantly appointed with sparkling crystal, fine porcelain, candles, and orchids. The multi-course menu changes daily and includes specialties created by Relais & Chateaux. The servers are well trained and are quick to notice your needs. The sommeliers pour daily complimentary wines at lunch and dinner, and premium vintages for a fee. Complimentary cocktails are also available before, during and after the meals. Restaurant seating is not assigned, so you can dine with whomever you wish. There are several additional dining venues, some for a nominal fee. Make reservations before the cruise, as some restaurants get fully booked fast. Le Champagne is a small, intimate restau
rant serving an elaborate menu highlighted by dishes such as Caviar and Blinis, Foie Gras, Lobster Thermidor, and Rack of Lamb. A culinary event not to be missed. Seishin is an Asian fusion restaurant offering sushi, sashimi and other artistically prepared and presented dishes. It is also a great place to enjoy a sushi lunch. La Terrazza, the venue for lavish buffet breakfasts and lunch spreads, transforms at dinner time into an elegant restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating featuring regional Italian specialties. Stars Supper Club serves a tasting menu of artfully presented tapas with multiple bite-size servings. As course follows course and fine wines are poured, a pianist and a wonderful vocalist entertain guests with popular jazz tunes by the likes of Gershwin and Nat King Cole. The Pool Grill, a casual outdoor eatery during the day, becomes an al fresco restaurant at sundown, where you grillyour-own seafood and prime cuts on hot lava rocks. In the afternoon the ship offers an elegant High Tea with live music and gourmet selections of loose tea leaves, finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries. If you want to dine in your own suite,

there is an extensive room service menu including restaurant selections during dining hours. Life on Board There are many activities throughout the day including trivia games, cooking demonstrations, wine tasting and enrichment lectures. You can also be pampered at the spa, work out in the fitness center, or just perfect your tan on the upper deck. Entertainment consists of performances by a group of six talented artists featuring Motown, Opera, and Broadway highlights. In addition, the lounges are alive with music: a trio plays dance tunes, two pianists entertain with international selections, and a duo plays dance music on the deck. Every night, the panorama lounge turns into a lively disco, pulsating into the night with music from the 60s to Lady Gaga. There is also an elegant Connoisseur’s Corner — a cigar and cognac lounge decorated with rich leather and dark tones, where cigar aficionados can savor their favorite smokes and after dinner drinks. Throughout the ship there are several lounges where guests sip complimentary cocktails and mixed drinks into the wee hours. Itinerary Highlights Our ports of call included Grand Turk, in Turks and Caicos, Samana in Dominican Republic, Road Town in Tortola, Gustavia in St. Barts, and Philipsburg in St. Maarten. In every port the ship offers a selection of fairly priced excursions. It is best to book yours in advance. Some Lobster Thermidor at Le Champagne. Tapas at Stars Supper Club. ports are easy to enjoy on your own but others are better experienced with an organized trip. Our first stop was in Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos where we relaxed on a pristine beach with white powder sand, and calm, turquoise waters. In Samana we took a “cave and mangrove exploration” tour (designated as a Silversea experience). We sailed around the Los Haitises National Park, a wild life sanctuary surrounded by island outcrops rising from the blue sea. We passed by Bird Island, home to nesting pelicans, frigate birds, and herons, and continued along a magical mangrove forest. We visited the caves of the Taino Indians who once populated this area. Surrounded by stalactite, stalagmites and limestone rock formations, we observed pictographs created by the Tainos 2,000 years ago. Another remarkable excursion was a catamaran sail through the Sir Frances Drake Channel off Tortola. We moored a few yards away from three caves and snorkelled in crystal clear waters atop coral forests teeming with tropical fish of every color and size. Gustavia in St. Barts is a sophisticated, French speaking town with Parisian style boutiques, lively cafes, restaurants, and luxury marinas with mega yachts. Just stroll around and you’ll feel that you are on the French Riviera. The last stop was in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, the shopping Mecca of the Caribbean. The ship offered an on board shopping concierge who accompanied passengers and helped them purchase duty free jewelry and fine watches at cruiseline approved shops. * * * Cruising is a great escape, but on board Silver Spirit it is an experience in a class by itself. ∆ Marina in Gustavia, St. Barts.
