Strategies For A

I

f you really want to be successful this year you have to change the way you think about things, break old habits, put some real boundaries in place and tap into your determination, says Vickie Milazzo, author of the New York Times bestseller, Wicked Success Is Inside Every Woman. “It is possible to create a life that excites and energizes you,” she says. “But first you have to make a conscious choice to step out of your old, unfulfilling one. And it’s a choice you have to make over and over again — if you don’t your old patterns will suck you back in.” To achieve success you have to cultivate a new, resourceful mindset. She offers nine strategies that can help you do exactly that in 2012: Break the feel-good addiction Remember, where you focus is where you’ll yield results. And because we like to feel good, we gravitate toward what’s easy instead of what’s productive. We major in minor accomplishments, wasting time surfing the Internet, watching TV, or hanging out on Facebook. “It’s time to let go of time-sucking distractions,” says Milazzo. “The more superficial things you engage in the more superficial your life and accomplishments will be. So the next time you have a break at work or the next time all the kids are January - February 2012

out of the house, instead of checking your email, Facebook or texts, use the time to take a step toward achieving one of your goals.” Stop being the Chief Everything Officer Don’t say “Yes” by default. It’s a hard lesson to learn but in order to be successful, you have to understand that by saying “no” to some things you will have the time and energy to say “yes” to the right things. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and pulled in every direction you won’t be able to lead yourself, much less anyone else. “Stop committing your energy to every person or situation that demands it,” advises Milazzo. “You need to set your own expectations of what you want to accomplish. Don’t let your career or life take a backseat to everyone else’s. Yes, you have responsibilities to others. But you’ve also got a responsibility to yourself.” Do something big every day You eat a whale the same way you eat an apple – one bite at a time. Successful people 14

understand that to accomplish any project you can’t expect to do it all at once. “This is often why our New Year’s resolutions don’t work out,” notes Milazzo. “You say, ‘I am going to lose 20 pounds!’ And then you implement a new exercise regimen — or heck, just start actually exercising — and after two days of no weight loss you get discouraged. You aren’t going to achieve your goals over night. You have to work at it every day. Commit to doing something big every day towards that project or goal and you’ll reach it. Keep working out regularly and slowly but surely you’ll see the results. Find something you can improve and start improving it — one bite, one step, one day at a time.” Stop hanging with the biggest losers When you choose to participate in negative behaviors they rub off on you. Think about it this way: If you’re struggling to achieve a goal, you shouldn’t hang out with someone else who is struggling to achieve that same goal. If you want to be great at golf, you don’t hang out with a bad golfer. “Successful people tend to hang out with other successful people, not with losers who whine about someone else’s success,” says Milazzo. “Stick with the winners. The view from the top is meant to be shared. Find someone who’s already there to share it with, not someone who’s never seen it.” Expand what you’re willing to believe about yourself If you see yourself as powerless that’s what you will be. Anytime you find yourself entertaining doubts or trying to limit what you think is possible, remind yourself of your past successes. Let them infuse you with confidence and bolster your resolve. “Believing you can do it — whatever ‘it’ is — is 90 percent of the win,” assures Milazzo. When you expand what you’re willing to believe about yourself, you can transform who you are and what your life looks like.” January - February 2012

Don’t wait for conditions to be perfect Along the way to becoming successful, you may have to redefine what success looks like for you. Conditions will never be perfect – there will always be something muddying the water, even if it’s just a little muddy. “The real challenge is accepting that you have to keep on giving your best even when things aren’t perfect,” says Milazzo. “Misguided perfectionism can keep you from stepping out and going for what you want. Perfectionism can also rob you of the enjoyment of experiences. Distinguishing what does and doesn’t require perfection is the hallmark of successful people.” Surround yourself with as many successful mentors as possible Inept coaches don’t fail to help you — they help you to fail. Look around you for others whose work you admire and model yourself after them instead. “Get out of the rut of your own habits,” advises Milazzo. “Take your advice from people with a proven positive track record. Accepting the leadership of others does not make you less capable of achieving your goals. It actually boosts your abilities. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. And when you get good advice, don’t be too proud to follow it.” Regenerate your passion for work Do you remember why you wanted the career you have? There aren’t many jobs that offer easy hours and easy money, so that probably wasn’t it. It was probably the love you had for the profession whether you get to help people everyday, use your creativity, crunch numbers or whatever your passion is. Tap back into the frame of mind you had when you were just starting out. Ask yourself, What can I do to become passionate about work again? “When you take this inward look, it is entirely possible you’ll see the path 54

Nine Ways To Streng

I

f you’ve been married for more than a few weeks, you know that romance and roses are only part of what makes up a marriage. If you really want to live happily ever after, you must put daily thought and work into your relationship with your spouse.

“I believe that many marriages simply deteriorate because couples allow their relationships to run on ‘autopilot,’ but still expect them to stay healthy and exciting,” explains Todd Patkin, author of the book Finding Happiness: One Man’s Quest to Beat Depression and Anxiety and — Finally — Let the Sunshine In. “But the truth is, like everything else in life, relationships don’t work that way. We must learn to put as much effort into our marriages as we do in trying to succeed professionally or keeping our gardens, houses, or cars looking top shelf.”Furthermore, Patkin asserts that a happy marriage is the cornerstone of a happy life — if your marriage isn’t good, you’re going to have trouble feeling fulfilled in other areas as well. “When you let your marriage just ‘sit,’ it’ll eventually get rusty and break down, just like your car would,” Patkin points out. “And that’s a terrible tragedy. We all should have been told growing up that you do have to work on your marriage every day, too, if you want it to stay exciting and great.” Patkin offers nine tips for a happier marriage.

then Your Marriage by Dottie DeHart

Hi Class Living

Recommit yourself to your marriage every single day Believe it or not, your marriage vows weren’t a one-time deal. No, you and your spouse probably aren’t going to stand in front of your loved ones and recommit yourselves to one another on a regular basis. But if you want to cultivate a strong and happy marriage, you should start each morning by making a renewed personal commitment to keeping your relationship healthy and rewarding. “People work on their cars, their houses, and their gardens on a regular basis,” Patkin points out. “And just as these things need regular, constant attention to thrive, so does your marriage. Don’t let your enthusiasm for working on your relationship be short-lived. In order to give your marriage regular tune-ups, start by remembering what you said you’d do when you made your vows: Love your spouse. Honor her (or him!). Cherish her. Comfort her. Remain faithful to her. And do these things in good times and bad, in sickness and in health — every day of your marriage.” Evaluate where your selfworth comes from With very few exceptions, we human beings tend to base our sense of self-worth on the things that are most important to us. It’s common to hear people proudly say, “I’m a financial advisor,” or, “I’m the manager of my division at work,” or even, “I drive a Cadillac!” But how often do you hear, “I am the world’s luckiest husband,” or, “I have the best family in the whole wide world”? “I understand all about being proud of your career accomplishments and of other things in your life, but I truly believe that the happiest couples draw a lot of their selfworth from their relationship with each other,” Patkin asserts. “So please assess where your marriage really falls right now on your list of personal accomplishments. Are you consistently relying on something other than your marriage, like your job, to make you feel good about yourself?” January - February 2012

Verbalize to your spouse the things you love and appreciate about him or her Did you know that the things you think about and talk about influence how you experience the world around you? So why not spend time thinking about how great your spouse is and then verbalizing those thoughts? Start by reminding yourself of all of the reasons why you fell in love in the first place, and then list how much more wonderful your partner has gotten since your marriage. Also, tell her (or him!) how much she means to you, how much you love her, and how beautiful she is ten times a day. “No one will ever say that they hear such compliments about themselves too many times,” Patkin promises. “And not only will this make your partner feel great in the moment, but consistently complimenting one another is the single greatest longterm vitamin you can each give to one another for your marriage. Verbalizing such compliments to your spouse is especially important today because most of us have a tendency to dwell on our mistakes while disregarding all of the things we do right. And we don’t normally hear compliments from our kids, our coworkers, or even our friends either, so over time, we start to feel small and unhappy. Thus, as a spouse, it is your responsibility to continue to make your wife or husband feel as great about her or himself as possible.” Acknowledge the little things your spouse does, and return the favor In a similar vein, constantly perform small but meaningful acts for your spouse, and don’t be surprised if he or she starts to do the same for you. For example, if your wife hates unloading the dishwasher, make a point to get into the kitchen and put away the dishes first. It shows your spouse that you are paying attention and that you care — and that is truly priceless! “Also, it’s key that anytime your spouse goes out of his or her way to make your life better or easier, acknowledge that 28

Statement Pieces For The New Year Sharon Mosley

I

nstead of being oh-so-practical all the time, seek out a signature piece — a unique dress, coat or pair of shoes that is so out of the ordinary you’ll want to wear them everyday.

And if you do find a show-stopping piece that is worth investing in, do the math — that is the cost per wear — sometimes it may be a good time to splurge for the long-term value. Yes, the Cartier watch, the Hermes handbag or the Chanel jacket can last a lifetime. But you can always take the less expensive route to signature style. Keep your eyes open when you shop the stores and browse online. Go for one great look. Here are a few statement pieces that may get your attention (and everyone else’s) - taking you from basic, boring and so hoho-hum to fun, fabulous and va-va-voom all year long. A statement dress It’s a good idea to have at least one of these in your closet. Having at least one “go-to” dress that you love to wear year after year (to different parties of course!) is a wardrobe must-have. This season, choose a special cocktail sheath in all-over lace to make a stunning entrance to any festive occasion. Shiny sparkly sequin dresses can January - February 2012

also be standouts at galas. A statement pair of shoes Step out in a pair of haute heels. Shoes can set the tone for the whole outfit. The shoes that are getting all the raves this season are pumped up with platforms, glazed with exotic skins and studded with jewels. Over-the-knee boots with stiletto heels are definitely investment pieces that will work with your wardrobe for years. A statement jacket Check out the new leather jackets. Yes, dressing up or down has never been easier. With the new burnished metallic leathers out there, it’s easy to do. Team with a frilly ruffled shirt and pencil skirt for dressier outings or with jeans and T-shirts for casual days. This is one place you will not want to skimp on price, however. Soft and supple are the key words, nothing stiff -- ever! A statement clutch We all have to lug around the totes during the workweek, but come the weekend,

it’s time for clutching something a little more frivolous. I love Nicolas Ghesquiere’s white leather clutch in winter white for Balenciaga, but for almost $1,000, I’m going to have to pass this time around. I think perhaps something else in leopard print with feathers ... A statement ring or cuff You’ll find a huge selection of chunky cocktail rings in all shapes and sizes, most with adjustable bands. No ring sizes to worry about. Just slip on and blast a little bling with your outfits. Another no-brainer way to add instant signature style to your wardrobe is the

statement cuff. This bracelet is best when big and bold, whether in metallic gold and shimmering with crystals or in a dramatic, dark hematite pewter that wraps and twists around the wrist. A lot of wow factor for a little price! A statement coat Find an evening coat that is over-thetop. Look for drama in colorful furry, knee-length jackets, a wonderful printed brocade blazer or a glittering velvet wrap that ties in front. You may not want to take this one off even after you arrive at the party! ∆

NINE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR MARRIAGE— From 20 you’ve noticed and that you appreciate this Don’t let resentment build expression of your partner’s love,” Patkin When you live in fairly close quarters suggests. “Never let small acts go unno- with another human being, it’s inevitable ticed. It’s when you nit-pick with your spouse each and every don’t acknowledge your spouse’s efforts time you feel a teeny bit put out, it’s also that he or she will begin to feel taken for unhealthy to let issues and negative feelgranted and ignored. And usually, things ings build up and fester. will only go downhill from there.” “Always, always make it a priority to keep the lines of communication open,” Learn and then do what Patkin advises. “Even if you have to go makes your spouse feel for a walk to clear your head first, be most loved sure to express your grievances in a calm, Don’t assume you know what makes constructive way — preferably before you your spouse feel the most loved. “While go to bed angry. Also, remember that this any expression of love is, of course, a good is a two-way street. When your spouse is thing, the fact is that we all feel loved in upset with you, make every effort not to fly different ways. So it is important that you off the handle and to fairly consider what find out what makes your spouse feel the you’re hearing. Marriage does involve most loved,” advises Patkin. “πSimply compromising and modifying your behavask the question, ‘What have I done in the ior for another’s well-being — and believe past that made you feel the most special?’ me, your mutual happiness is worth it.” Some people might want a date night. Take responsibility and stop Others might need to be told verbally that trying to fix your partner they are the greatest. It’s always a good idea to ask your spouse what makes him There’s a lot of finger pointing going on or her feel most loved — and then include in marriages. After all, it’s easy to identify those actions or words into your regular and list all the ways someone else is getrepertoire. You’ll notice a big difference… ting it wrong. Beautiful! After you finish berating your spouse for yet another of his or her supposed failings, does the quality of your life actually change? Probably not. According to Patkin, it’s time to take a break from blaming and instead work on yourself. While both partners do need to be willing to compromise in order to help the other, it’s always best to look at how your own behavior could improve before you try to change your spouse’s. “The more time you spend trying to change your spouse, the less time you have for improving yourself,” Patkin points out. “As far as I know, there has never been such a thing as a ‘perfect’ husband or wife! And I bet that when you begin to take responsibility for areas in which you may have been dropping the ball, the dynamic of your marriage will change. Perhaps your spouse has been trapped in a cycle of negativity that has been fed by your own less-than-helpful attitude. And remember, people unconsciously begin to mirror the people they spend the most time with. This happens for the good as well as for the bad! So if you start working on yourself, your spouse will most likely do the same.” Figure out what your strengths are and play to them As much as possible, you and your spouse should each play to your strengths within your marriage and back away from your weaknesses. When you force yourself to do something for which you have little aptitude, you only frustrate yourself and, by extension, the people with whom you live. “I’ve learned that it’s definitely a good idea to ask your spouse for help or pay to have the job done if neither of you feels confident,” Patkin says. Date your spouse again When you’re newly in love and in full courtship mode, you do everything you can to spend every free moment with your partner. Eventually though, work, 51

Did you know that large earrings make a nose look smaller? Or that silver hoops cool down a ruddy complexion? Or a pair of gold button earrings warm up pale skin tones? “There are few accessories that can have as much effect on the face as a pair of earrings,” says health and beauty expert, Deborah Chase, author of “Terms of Adornment: The Ultimate Guide to Accessories.” “Round or square, plain or fancy earrings bring light, color and movement to the face. They are the perfect finish to a look, adding balance, polish and personality.” And who wouldn’t want more of that? According to Chase, the only problem with earrings is choosing which ones to wear. “Some styles, like small diamonds, are appropriate with everything from bathing suits to ball gowns,” she admits. 44 Oversized hoop earrings by Jennifer Lopez.

Tips For Buying The Right Bag by Sharon Mosley

I

f there is one fashion accessory we love to buy, it’s a handbag. But according to Amy Goodman, style expert and author of “Wear This, Toss That!,” we sometimes wear them all wrong. Here are some tips from Goodman for buying the right bag: • Your bag shape and body shape shouldn’t match. If you’re tall and thin, consider an unstructured, slouchy bag. If you’re round and curvy, get a structured style. Think opposite for a beautiful balance. And if you’re average all around, lucky you — you can sport any style. Be sure to try on your bag in front of a mirror. It’s a must. • The bag should hit your assets. If you have hips, make sure the bag hits above or below, but not at your hip. If you are busty, the bag should hit below the bust. If you are petite, your bag should go no lower than your waist, or you’ll appear to be all bag and no body! Tall? Celebrate your stature with a long bag that hits just below the hip. • Consider your bag’s main functions. Will you wear it to work? Are you a mom on the go? Do you need a bag to carry you through a weekend or simply to hold a compact, lipstick and ID for a special evening out? Do you dig pockets or just one

main compartment? The answer to these questions will determine the size, style and durability of your bag. A small crystal clutch won’t likely hold a work file. • What specific bags work for tall women? Goodman suggests buying medium to larger unstructured bags and bags with long straps, as long as the purse isn’t tiny. “You can play with volume,” she says. She cautions taller women about top handle bags with a strict frame and rigid edges, which produce a stark overall look and create too many angles when juxtaposed against a tall frame. Instead, she recommends a rounded or trapezoid satchel with soft curves to better balance your look. • Petite women should think proportionally smaller, and not venture bigger than a medium-size bag, says Goodman. “With your body type, bag shape is less of an issue, so you can embrace a round or slouchy bag.” Bags that don’t work for petite women include overly long body bags and enormous bag-size satchels. “A too-big bag will envelop you entirely,” she says. 67

Tips For Healthier Joints by Marilynn Preston

H

ealthy joints make for happy people. If you’re someone who suffers from a bum knee or a sore shoulder, you know the frustration that’s involved when your joints give out and pain sets in.

The good news is that there is a lot you can do to keep your joints strong and healthy so you can stay active, energized and injury-free all year long. Here are seven points about joints that will save you time, money and aggravation: LOSE WEIGHT The more fat you lug around the more stress to your joints. Every pound you lose equates to four pounds less pressure on your knees. Best advice? Don’t diet. Eat real food in modest amounts, including lots of fruits and vegetables. CROSS TRAIN

This is just a fancy way of saying you shouldn’t focus on one sport or activity to get fit. By cross training — partici-

pating in a mix of sports you enjoy — you avoid the kind of single-sport repetitive motion that can cause joint problems over time. Cross training helps you develop muscles in areas untouched by your primary sport, and strong muscles help stabilize and protect your joints. If you’re uncertain about a good cross training complement to your sport, do yoga. It’s an ancient and magnificent way to keep your joints strong, flexible and spacious. LUBRICATE Joints have juices: lubricating fluids that allow your joints to move with more ease and less stress. To activate those juices, start your exercise routine with a gentle five- to 10-minute warm-up, and gradually increase your effort. Another good way to self-lube is water, water and more water — or its fluid equivalent — to the tune of six to eight glasses a day. STRENGTH TRAIN Joints need protection. Your muscles, tendons and ligaments are designed to protect your joints, but if they’re weak, they can’t do the job. It’s YOUR job to get them strong and flexible, and the best way to do that is a well-designed, well-executed strength-training program that includes stretching. Get a trainer, read a book or take a class, but do something! If you do nothing, over time you will become weaker and weaker, and your joints will suffer.

fitness equipment. Muscle imbalance also contributes to joint problems. Typically, it’s the muscles you don’t see when you look in the mirror — hamstrings, rear deltoids, lower back, etc. — that are underdeveloped. Make sure your strength-training program is balanced and works your upper and lower body and your back side, as well as your front side. DON’T OVERDO IT Joints need tender care. If you jerk them around too much, or if you work them in ways they are not intended to go, they will rebel. Trying to lift too much weight, for instance, is a very jerky thing to do. So is overtraining — doing too much, too often — on muscles and joints not ready for the stress and strain. Learn to listen to your body. Understand the range of motion for joints. (Knees, for instance, are supposed to hinge, not rotate.) Never push past joint pain. Be kind to your joints, and they will serve you well.

GET BALANCED About 55 percent of all joint injuries involve the knee. Balance exercises promote leg strength and stability and protect the knee. There are many wonderful standing poses in yoga and tai chi that improve balance, and so does working out on a wobbly balance board, one of the trendier pieces of

FIGHT INFLAMMATION WITH FOOD The anti-inflammatory diet is a welldocumented way of eating that decreases disease-causing inflammation throughout the body, including the joints. It avoids foods that make inflammation worse — saturated fats, simple refined carbs — and emphasizes healthy fats, including olive oil and omega-3 fatty acid foods such as salmon, herring, sardines, flax seed and walnuts. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C (in foods, not supplements), selenium and carotenes are part of the anti-inflammatory diet, and so are bioflavenoids (quercetin and anthocyanidins) found in onions, kale, leeks, blueberries and red and black grapes. Ginger and turmeric are two spices that also fight inflammation. ∆

EARRING STYLE — From Pg. 31 “Unlike shoes, bags and hats, earrings never go out of fashion,” adds Chase. She suggests creating a wardrobe of earrings starting with universal styles such as pearls, diamond studs and small hoops in

gold or silver. “As you try on different styles and sizes, you will develop an eye for those that are the most flattering to your face,” she says. “Look for these styles in a range

of materials including ivory, amber, coral, gemstones, Bakelite and pearls for an earring collection that you will enjoy for a lifetime.” And this season, jewelry designers are giving us plenty of different styles to add to our accessory stash — from huge hoops to shoulder-grazing tassel earrings. They are mixing metals — light and dark — black diamonds, oxidized silver and onyx with gold. Here are Chase’s 10 tips for wearing earrings: • Slender, petite women need airy shapes. • Larger earrings make the nose look smaller. • Dome earrings de-emphasize a prominent nose. • Pearls, turquoise, rubies, coral and garnets are flattering on brunettes. • Emeralds, jade, sapphire, amethyst, silver, platinum and pale gold look especially good on redheads. • Multicolored earrings brighten the complexion. • The red glow of rubies and garnets and the fire of diamonds are flattering to all complexions. • If your face is round, choose oval, asymmetrical or angular shapes rather than round earrings. • Long faces benefit from broad-shaped earrings. • Avoid drop earrings if you have a long face or a short neck. ∆

The study came from the research journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Scientists from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center — the nation’s leading obesity research center, located in Baton Rouge, La .— analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over 13 years. It seems this isn’t the first study to link sitting and heart disease. As far back as 1953, British researchers discovered that sitting bus drivers were twice as likely to die of a heart attack as standing trolley conductors. In 2007, University of Missouri scientists reported that people who had high levels of non-exercise activity but didn’t exercise much burned more calories a week than those who ran 35 miles a week but had moderate levels of non-exercise activity. As far as why it is more dangerous to sit than stand, Marc Hamilton, Ph.D., a physiologist and professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, says the answer revolves around the enzyme lipoprotein lipase, or LPL, which breaks down fat in the bloodstream and turns it into energy. Hamilton discovered that standing rats have 10 times more LPL than lying rats, regardless of their diet or how much they exercised. It’s not that humans are exercising less; it’s that we’re sitting more. Especially with the advent of the personal computer and the social networking era, we lead more sedentary lifestyles. 55

Activities For Loved Ones With Alzheimer’s by Dottie DeHart

I

f you are a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, you have a lot of responsibilities, ranging from cook to nurse to housekeeper to chauffeur, and more. While those tasks aren’t always easy, you know how to handle doctors’ appointments and how to assist your loved one with getting ready for bed. Sometimes, it’s actually all the unscheduled time in between that presents one of the biggest challenges! Because many caregivers find the roles of “entertainer” and “social coordinator” to be the most difficult, they tend to shell out quite a bit of money for options like adult day care. But according to clinical social worker Nataly Rubinstein, it’s easier than you think to help your loved one to feel happy and fulfilled at home. “Everyone needs stimulation, especially January - February 2012

a person who is suffering from memory loss,” says Rubinstein, author of the new book Alzheimer ’s Disease and Other Dementias: The Caregiver ’s Complete Survival Guide. “These individuals often appear to be disinterested… but that’s because there’s nothing productive for them to do!” “It’s a sad but true fact that — at some point or another — most of us caregivers are guilty of succumbing to the ‘Let me do it for you, Honey’ syndrome. This is where we stop allowing the person with dementia to participate in activities that we feel will be tiring or difficult for them. (Another

48

name for this is Premature Dependency.) And soon, we’re struggling to occupy all of those unscheduled hours.” The truth is, we all feel better when we have a goal to work toward and when we’re with other people. Caregivers know that, which is why they’re tempted to pay the high costs of day care. But Rubinstein promises that all it takes is a little time, patience, compassion, and creativity to bring fulfilling activities into the home. “The most important thing to remember is to keep things simple, fun, and enjoyable — activities that are too challenging can lead to frustration and avoidance. When you’re planning activities, try to include as many of the ‘Six Ss’ as possible: structure, self-determination, success, stimulation, socialization, and security.” • If your loved one is a handyman (or handywoman!), have him or her sort nuts, bolts, and screws, or organize a toolbox. • Start an herb garden. stay happy and busy should not be about power struggles. Choose activities that fit the patient’s interests.” Rubinstein points out that it’s important to be careful with your approach. If a patient feels that he is being bullied or forced into doing something, he might become belligerent or refuse — even if he might otherwise enjoy the activity. “Instead of saying, ‘It’s time for your walk,’ try saying, ‘Honey, I love when you come with me on our walks — I feel so

much safer when you’re with me. Maybe we can look for some flowers to pick and put them in a vase when we get back home,’” she suggests. “Ultimately, you’ll be surprised by how much enjoyment your loved one — and you — can get out of such simple activities,” Rubinstein concludes. “Be creative and remember that the key is to make the patient feel important, needed, and productive, and not like a burden. There are many happy hours ahead of you!” ∆

How To Nego

A

s the job market recovers, a unique phenomenon is beginning to happen and it could cost you money.

“As people who have been looking for work a long time start to get back into the workforce, many of them are so happy just to get a job that they sometimes accept a lower salary than they have to,” says Bill Humbert, author of RecruiterGuy’s Guide to Finding a Job. “Some employers feel that they can probably get away with a lowball offer, and many job hunters will grab it just so they can have a job. The truth is there are ways to get the job and still get what you want.” Humbert isn’t a career coach, but his expertise comes from working the opposite side of the job stream as a recruiting consultant for corporations. He knows how companies calculate salary, and how to judge their thresholds. His advice for job hunters includes: Don’t Offer Salary Requirements When you are asked to include salary requirements with your resume, that is typically a company’s first screen, and it can be used against you. I’ve seen people agonize over what to reveal, because they are afraid of pricing themselves out of a good job. My advice is to simply put “Open” in that spot. If your qualifications are on target, they’ll January - February 2012

call you. If in the interview you’re asked what you made at your last job, reply by asking about the range for the one you are applying. You’d be surprised how managers or human resource representatives will tell you. Don’t Give Away Too Much In many job applications, an employer will ask for your salary history. It is perfectly acceptable to write “Willing to discuss at appropriate time during interview process” and leave those numbers blank. Writing down those numbers pigeonholes you, and reduces your negotiation power. Don’t Negotiate Salary That’s right. Don’t negotiate salary in the interviews. Instead, negotiate when you’ll give them your salary requirements. When they ask you for that figure, tell them you don’t know what you’d require until you have a clear picture of the job requirements and potential for advancement over the next five years. After you have that information, and you’re asked again for that number, respond by asking to go through what I call your “impacts” – areas of your job that directly impact the company’s bottom line. This

discussion will allow you to demonstrate what you bring to the table. At the end of that discussion, simply tell them that you are very interested in the position, and that you’d seriously consider any offer they’d like to make. Keep Networking Once you have a job offer, it’s not a done deal until you accept it. Until that happens, keep networking and looking for jobs. It may give you valuable market-worth data about the position you’ve been offered. It may also be a safety net in case something goes awry between the time you receive an offer and the time you accept it.

by Ginny Grimsley

Accepting the Offer Once an offer is given, you have the right to ask for a clarification on it. Asking “Is there any flexibility in this offer?” may help to open a discussion of increasing the offer. If it does, don’t expect a large boost in base pay, but rather, an extra week of paid vacation, a signing bonus or other such perks. Remember that they are interviewing you because they need to fill that position. It’s important to the company to have someone in that job, and while they are considering you, they aren’t doing you a favor. They need what you have to offer, so you should get the best offer out of them that is possible.” ∆

but offer little heat circulation. Including installation, a new gas insert can cost $2,500 to $4,500. Actual installation takes about half a day if an existing gas line is available to the fireplace. Among the best-selling brands are Fireplace Xtrordinair, Kozy Heat and Valor. Other major fireplace, stove and insert brands include Lennox Hearth Products, Vermont Castings and Monessen. Lennox Hearth Products offers a detailed shopping guide with online glossary at www.lennoxhearthproducts.com. Gas logs give the look of a full fire for a lot less — $300 to $600. These logs are

a popular option for otherwise unused fireplaces. “But their heat goes up the chimney,” Heller said. “They look great but they’re not energy efficient. They cost about $1 to $1.50 an hour to operate.” Incentives, tax credits or rebate programs can help with those costs. Contact your local natural-gas provider or fireplace-insert seller for more details. Regardless of what’s powering the flames, there’s something magical about a glowing fireplace on a cold winter night. A fireplace brings family together. People like to sit around the fire and relax. It adds a lot more to a room than warmth. ∆

STAND UP — From Pg. 47 Whether they be corporate workers or students, most who sit for a living have learned by experience about the posture and back pain risks of sitting for long periods. But the fact is that we also burn 60 more calories an hour when standing versus sitting. (That’s roughly 500 calories for every eight-hour workday.) A study from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington found that within eight months of starting sedentary office work, people gained an average of 16 pounds. Combine that with the increased LPL levels and it is no wonder that our sedentary hearts are more like ticking time bombs. Hamilton explained: “We know there’s a gene in the body that causes heart disease, but it doesn’t respond to exercise, no matter how often or how hard you work out. And yet the activity of the gene becomes worse from sitting — or, rather, the complete and utter lack of contractile activity in your muscles. So the more non-exercise activity you do the more total time you spend on your feet and out of your chair. That’s the real cure.” So here’s what Hamilton and I recommend: • Stand up! Get up off your tush more often. If you usually take one break an hour, now take two -- if even for a short stretch or a drink of water down the cor-

ridor. I’m not trying to reduce productivity, but consider that a European Heart Journal study of 5,000 men and women found that those who took more breaks during the day were 1.6 inches thinner than those who did not. • Redefine exercise as a lifestyle rather than just an activity. Redefine working out to include every portion of your day. Don’t just be fit; live fit. • Stand when you talk on the phone. Redefine your phone ring; download a ring tone that reminds you to get off your derriere. When the phone rings, it’s a sign not only that someone wants to talk with you but also that you need to stand up again. • Lastly, consider allotting time (certain hours) in your day to stand up and work. Temporarily remove your chair from your sight for that period of the day. Move your computer to a waist-high counter, table or desk. Consider getting a stand-up desk; these desks are becoming more and more popular. Leading the way are many personnel in the offices at Men’s Health magazine who have dumped their office chairs and are standing during their workdays. It’s more proof to support this old adage: If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. ∆

In every port you can explore the sites on your own or join a complimentary shore excursion. We recently sailed along the Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest on the Amadolce, an elegant AMA Waterways riverboat. The Amadolce The Amadolce, like most riverboats, is designed to navigate narrow river canals, tight locks, and low bridges. It is 360 ft. long, 38 ft. wide, three stories high, carrying up to 148 passengers. The hub of life aboard is the Panorama Lounge, a spacious “living room” where you can savor complimentary espresso and cappuccino, have a cocktail, munch on freshly baked pastries, and enjoy nightly entertainment. On the top level you’ll find the sun deck, the perfect place to enjoy refreshing river breezes and take in the passing scenery. The ship also features an intimate lounge in the back, a small exercise room with a sauna, a library, and a shop with necessities and souvenirs. Accommodations include 71 staterooms and 4 junior suites with floor-to-ceiling sliding French doors on the top two floors, and fixed picture windows on the lowest level. The recently refurbished rooms are modern and comfortable, appointed with plush bedding, built in closets and glassenclosed showers with multi directional jets. Every guest room is equipped with a sophisticated electronic system that offers movies, TV channels, music, and complimentary internet (with keyboard and mouse) and WiFi. The cruise fare is all inclusive except for bar drinks and special wines. You can enjoy complimentary champagne at breakfast and red and white wine at dinner. Almost every day there is some kind of celebration — Captain’s Welcome Aboard Party with

champagne and red roses for the ladies, German beer and knockwursts in Regensburg, a bubbling glass of Kaiserspritzer in Bavaria, and a farewell toast under the stars in Budapest. Other amenities include complimentary, unlimited bottled water, post cards mailed free of charge, walking shore excursions for different fitness levels, personal Quietvox systems, (a wireless devise used to hear the narration during guided tours), and cold or hot towels and drinks (depending on the weather) upon returning from shore excursions. AMA Waterways, a privately owned US based company, is dedicated to delivering a great cruising experience. The operation is flawless and every detail is taken care of from the moment you step aboard until disembarkation. Food Meals are served in the Restaurant; breakfast and lunch buffet style or a la carte, and elegant sit down dinners. There is open sitting so you can dine with new friends or enjoy a romantic night at a table for two. In addition to the main breakfast and lunch there are smaller spreads in the lounge for early or late risers, and for those who don’t want to be tempted by the lavish buffets. Dinner, paired with wines, is the main event. Menus are often inspired by the location — Bavarian buffet in Germany, schnitzel in Austria, goulash in Hungary, linzer cake on the way to Linz, and apple strudel and sacher torte in Vienna. The menu also includes basic staples such as Caesar salad, grilled chicken, salmon and steak. Cookies, desserts and finger sandwiches along with tea, coffee, and espresso are served in the afternoon.

Entertainment Every night the lounge becomes a stage, where either the onboard musician plays everything from disco to romantic tunes, or visiting artists entertain with local music and folklore. We enjoyed two violinists and a guitar player in a virtuoso concert, and two Gipsy musicians who played table side at dinner. ITINERARY Nuremberg, Germany Nuremberg, once a flourishing medieval metropolis, is a vibrant city with a charming old town area, cobblestone streets, and narrow alleys. In the 1930s the city served as the hub of Hitler’s rallies, and after World War Two, the site of the famous Nazi trials. We visit the parade grounds where some of the gray buildings and cement bleachers are still standing in silent testimony to the chilling past. Today the area is a recreational park, and the streets where Nazis marched in lockstep are now named after Israel’s prime ministers David Ben Gurion and Yitzhak Rabin. Our tour also stops in front of the courthouse (still in operation) where the trials took place. Regensburg, Germany Regensburg is a beautifully preserved storybook town, reminiscent of a Disney movie set. January - February 2012

We start our walking tour at the iconic Stonebridge, a medieval arch bridge spanning the Danube and offering picture perfect views of the city skyline. We continue along the winding streets, explore historic buildings and pass by “medieval skyscrapers,” decorative towers constructed to showcase their owners’ social standing. We also visit the Cathedral, a medieval sandstone building recently restored to its original glory. In the afternoon we visit St. Emmeram Palace, home of the Thurn and Taxis, the family that created the European Postal Service in the 15th century and operated it for over 350 years. The palace, built in the 1800’s in Rococo style, showcases original antique furniture and period décor. The treasury building next door houses decorative objects, jewelry, and weaponry from the family’s illustrious past. For a quick bite we stop at the city’s oldest sausage kitchen (since 1135), and sample its famous finger-sized bratwursts. Passau, Germany Passau is another Middle Age hub at the confluence of three rivers, the Ilz, the Inn, and the Danube. Following two devastating fires in the 1600’s, the city was rebuilt in the Baroque style. We explore the old city and the imposing St. Stephen Cathedral and admire the magnificent frescoes and stucco

Melk, Austria The morning is dedicated to a visit to Melk Abbey, a spiritual and cultural center for over 1,000 years. The highlight is a tour of the Melk Abbey, an active Benedictine monastery for over 900 years. The current building was constructed between 1701 and 1726 and is a monumental testimony to the master builders of the 18th century. The baroque style ornate rooms and marble halls were used by royals who often visited the opulent abbey. A sweeping balcony at the edge of the building offers panoramic views of the Danube River and its fertile valley beyond. The highlight of the complex is the magnificent gilded church lavishly decorated with frescoes and gold leaf statues. The Wachaw Valley, Austria The Amadolce follows the undulating Danube along verdant Wachaw Valley, Austria’s premier winemaking region. We pass by rolling hills and steep terraces laden with vineyards, ruins of long forgotten castles, storybook red roofed villages, and picture perfect churches. Vienna, Austria We arrive at dusk for an overnight stay. We join an optional (for a fee) Mozart and Strauss concert performed by the Vienna

Residence Orchestra, in an opulent palace luxuriously appointed with crystal chandeliers. In the morning we drive along Ringstrasse, the circular avenue that hugs the imperial city. We pass by iconic Baroque buildings, parks, statues, museums, the opera building, and the Hoffburg Palace — the winter imperial residence. We continue on foot along pedestrian streets lined with designer shops, veering of the beaten path to explore the 18th century neighborhoods. We have some free time to roam the bustling streets, stop at the Albertina Museum of Modern Art, and relax with a cup of coffee in a Viennese café. In the afternoon we take an optional guided tour of Schonbrunn Palace, the summer playground of the Hapsburgs including its most famous resident, Maria Theresa. We visit some 40 rooms, including ballrooms and private chambers lavishly appointed with fine furnishings, Bohemian crystal chandeliers, gold leaf wall panels, and inlaid parquet floors. We also meander through the formal gardens. Budapest, Hungary The last port of call is the majestic Hungarian capital, Budapest. The Danube divides the city in two parts: Buda and Pest. On the Pest side we stop at the impressive Hero’s Square, and drive along tree 67 61

Premium rooms have access to the Aqua Club lounge, where continental breakfast, crudités, canapés, afternoon tea and an open bar are available at select times. Dining One doesn’t typically associate gourmet cuisine with an all inclusive resort. However, Live Aqua quickly dispels this notion by elevating dining to an art form. There are several indoor and outdoor restaurants all using organic ingredients from local suppliers. Azur, the resort’s fine dining restaurant, features seafood with Mediterranean influences and Latin accents. MB offers gourmet comfort cuisine blending Asian and Latin flavors with a hint of French cuisine. After dinner, stop by the AKA Wine and Mezcal Bar to sample libations from the region’s largest collection of wine, tequila and mescal. Guests can enjoy unlimited daily breakfast and weekend brunch buffets at Siete restaurant, “where pop art meets traditional Mexican cuisine.” The avantgarde Mexican and world cuisine buffet ranges from traditional egg stations to international and Mexican specialties. Colorful full size murals throughout the restaurant celebrate seven Mexican pop culture icons, including artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. SPA Spa Aqua is arguably the most relaxing part of the Live Aqua experience. Their signature world-fusion spa treatments range from rejuvenating Mayan massages and hot stone massages to exclusive Mexican treatments, including chocolate or avocado body wraps, coffee exfoliations and the traditional Mayan temazcal.
