Born in Rome, Italy into a Diplomat family she had been stationed and lived in various countries; including, Italy, Ethiopia, Indonesia, New York, Lebanon, Yemen, Somalia, Kenya / Uganda, Denmark and England. Her travels have been to even more countries, including India, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Austria, Spain, Belgium, etc., This exposure to various countries and people, especially in the Diplomatic circuit inspired an understanding that there are underlying Principles which connect us all. This expanded into Philosophy, Religion and Socio-Cultural readings and research. While creating a passion for both the Built and Natural Environment. The desire to investigate and apply these Philosophies and Principles: Primordial, archetypes, dichotomies, numerology, etc., led to the study of Architecture at Syracuse University and the establishment of Mimaria, Banayoun and Mishkat after graduation. With a strong core team, these Principles are being related and expanded, as a collaboration to create a system of foundations formulating a Traditional Dialogue in the Modern Age.

Concept Sketches
C O N C E P T The symbolism of number Four: Four represents the cross, the square, and the four quadrants of a circle. Respectively, the cross signifies integrity and plentifulness, the square is a symbol of stability and clarity, and the quadrant symbolizes parts of the whole. There are four basic elements (water, earth, wind and fire), which are used symbolically in the spa. The symbolism of Four Nail Spa: Four Nail Spa tells the story of integrated dichotomies in terms of: Shapes: Rectilinear/Rigid and Curved/Organic Materials: Rough/Natural and Polished/Industrial Atmosphere: Warm and Cold, Dry and Humid Social Spaces: Socio-fugal (encourages isolation) and socio-petal (encourages social interaction). Four is designed as a welcoming, garden-like social experience that attracts youth to experience high-end services in a fresh and casual atmosphere. The softly backlit natural wood panels with the rough grey concrete flooring, which contrasts and compliments the highly polished White surfaces and transparent glass creating a scenery of ascetic modernism, while reminiscent of nature.

SUMMERY OF PROJECT The Architect wanted a clear readable design that would have several layered meanings as per the perception of the individual viewer expressing the rich South Korean Architecture tradition based on clarity, simplicity and elegance. The design would follow these principles : The design would be easy to build yet recreate a modern representation of South Korean identity, we wanted a new Vision for Busan, based on order, modular construction, “filter” and “gate”. We wanted to evoke South Korean love of order and nature with mystical philosophical theory. The process of studying and exploring the rich South Korean traditional Architecture heritage with its courts, gates, filters, podiums, modular construction and screens and the rich cultural traditions of South Korean symbolism took its time to investigate. Philosophical application of : Yin and Yang as Feminine Culture and Masculine Technology : separate and connected. Symbolism of numbers 3 and 7 (“chil”) Symbolism of paths, gardens and spaces as learning, awareness and enlightenment. The Organizational concept was based on : Recent theories on the Creative City and Creative Economy (most notably Landry). Scientific research on the Cycle of Research Development Scientific research on optimum of spatial area requirements for specific functions and ceiling heights for priming process and evoking correct response.

Client: Luthan Hotel & Spa – Private Client Location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Project Area: Total floor area: 6,448 m2
Number of Stories: 4 Completion: 2003 Services: Interior Design
D E S C R I P T I O N The interior design for a Female Only Boutique Hotel and Spa was requested expressing “Spa” concept. The name Luthan means: Sanctuary in Arabic.
C O N C E P T The concept was to express a “River of Life” that travels from the “Sea” (Ground Floor) to the “Sky” (Roof Floor) crossing the connection of water and air as“Rainbow” (Hotel Floor). The Ground Floor utilized colors of the lower three chakras: Red, Orange and Yellow. The words: Earth, Air, Water and Life are used in the Glass Panels for the Privacy Partition to the Hotel/Spa Entrance and in the Brass Metal Panels in Hotel Reception Area. In the Hotel Room Floor: the copper slate and dark colours with touches of Irridescent is analogous to Dew in Air. Each of the rooms in the Hotel represented a colour based on the meaning of healing for each colour. The Restaurant floor on the roof utilized Glass Flooring in shades of Blue, Indigo and Violet which are the colours of the three top “chakras” or “barakas” in Arabic. The stairs in wood go through the floor layers expressing the movement through the chakras/baraka.
