about

A daydreamer wanted to create a personal future library, and inject the soul of one of her favorite poems in the space. It is a quirky journey that makes intermediate stops before reaching the final destination. It starts by exploring the future of libraries and the physical books. Next, it stops to decode a selected poem entitled “My Life is a gift and extracts its essence (Haiku). And finally, merges the future library, the client needs and the encoded poem in a three dimensional space. Watch the full story at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-OV-fmGD78

" To do things differently, we need to perceive things differently " (Thackara, J, 2005)

report rational: This report is primarily concerned with challenging perceptions, and creating a paradigm shift in the way in which designers approach any design problem. This will be addressed by a modest attempt to define and analyze the added value of the Narrative-driven design approach. Although this method has been utilized, consciously or unconsciously by many designers throughout history, it is believed that the tactic is still nebulous. The report tries to explore, define and discuss the latest theories and arguments by contemporary design practitioners (i.e. Nigel Coates, Jenniefer Gadsby, Suzanne Mulder, Kossomann and De Jong), in order to reach a strategic framework, which suggests different techniques and methods to analyze and design.

62

why:

This project is a continuation of the dessirtation. The main motivation has emerged from the curiosity to discover the possibilities of using space as a medium to communicate & engage the mind and emotions of the receiver, just like what books and movies do.

DESIGN hypothesis:

Suggests that: If The Narrative-Driven Design Approach was used thoughtfully and subtly, the designer can create a paradigm shift in the way spaces are perceived; from aesthetically pleasing containers, to expressive, meaningful and absorbing live realities.

title:

‘HUMACITY’: Homs + Human + City : A spatial and theoretical installation for the Venice Architecture Biennale2012-13th International Architecture Exhibition, that re-presents a ’ NOW’ vision and identity for the torn city of Homs.

what & where:

The juxtaposed structural grid represents the buildings and alleys of Homs and is designed to sit metaphorically within the historic armory ‘Artiglierie dell’Arsenale’, emphasizing the illegitimate destruction of this historic deep-rooted city.

why:

“It is in the dialogue with pain that many beautiful things acquire their value.”Alain de Botton. This is a poignant project. The key driver in this humanist project was to draw political attention to the conflict in Syria. Spaces have been semiotically encoded to elicit strong emotional reactions in recipients. These reactions should act as a catalyst for critical thinking, about the ethics of war and its impact culturally and socially.

63

user needs:

Typical visitors at the Biennale are design savvy, artistically inclined and intelligent. These archetypes will enjoy the challenge of semiotics interpretation. Visitors will pass through various thresholds before enteringthe double height multilevel installation, and deciding their own route through the maze of destinations. The core design concept wasdriven from spacing apart the different layers of the city (urban fabric, roads network, virtual network), creating amicro city which can be experienced from different perspectives: outside the box (avoidance), inside the box (experience), on top of the box (viewing and following from distance). To elicit emotional reactions in the visitors, distorted scale and materials have been selected for their acoustic qualities and symbolism.

unique selling point:

HUMACITY is an experimental and sophisticated attempt to broaden the meaning and effects of spatial experiences. It also stresses that, as designers, it is imperative to intervene and contribute, even if little, in social and political crisis around the world.
