DESIGN BRIEF TITLE: MASAHA PAVILION The City is your Canvas
NAME OF CREATOR: HIDAYA BUADIR DESIGN DESCRIPTION: WHAT: MASAHA Pavilion is an interactive ar t installation which was designed as a response to THE PAVILION DESIGN COMPETITION by MISK ART INSTITUTE, to create a new medium of ar t that encompasses the citizens of Riyadh in a literal physical presence in the space, where they can contribute in enhancing the outdoor space and changing its appearance, arrangement and functionality as per their needs. It also fulfills the designer ’s continuous passion and curiosity to discover the possibilities of using space as a medium to communicate a message and engage the mind of the users. WHERE: MASAHA will be located in the premises of the institute’s newly acquired ar t center for MISK ART INSTITUTE. The location is the per fect spot which connects MISK vision with the city of Riyadh, and reflects its presence and effect on it. WHO: The targeted visitors are the ar tist of Riyadh who are intrested in integrating ART with the city, and have a first-hand ar tistic experience, giving them a hint of their ability to change the face of the city.
5
WHY: INTEGRATION is the key word. The aim is to integrate ART with the urban fabric, and to break the closed boxes of traditional and contemporar y Saudi ar t, taking them out of closed galleries, and weaving them with the outdoor fabric, spreading ART throughout Riyadh, while fostering community par ticipation and creative dialogue.

D E S I G NC OCNOC N CEPT EPT STORY HOW: The Narrative-Driven Design Approach was used to create a pavilion that addresses the importance of integrating art with the city, claiming that MISK ART INSTITUTE will be the incubator and the starting point. The story starts with a metaphor. A closed box representing Saudi traditional Art (limited in galleries with limited audience). With time, another box was formed around the first, surrounding it, representing the Saudi contemporary Art, yet both are still confined. MASAHA pavilion started to form by opening up one side of the traditional box towards the contemporary box, as well as opening the contemporary box towatrds the city. By that, the two boxes seem to embrace each other with opened arms. The conteporary box arms were opened wider towards the city. Walls and floors started to form, being denser for the traditional box - suggesting the thick building materials used in the past, and lighter for the contemporary - using steel and concrete, the contemporary building materials. The walls for the traditional box were perforated, allowing the passer by to peek through, and letting the city light inside. Inspired by Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, the interior of MASAHA (Floor & Walls) was designed based on a modular grid system, that replicates Al-Qatt grid. Visitors are welcomed to draw on the grid panels, creating a smaller MASAHA “space - canvas for them to fill. Very similar to the lego system - the genius invention that allows endless creations from one a simple building block - the pavilion also represents a three dimensional pixelated drawing, allowing endless possibilities to arrange, and re-arrange the space. On the other hand, the contemporary box contributed with light pixels (represting digital art), and green pixels (representing sustainable art), which have spread inside MASAHA, as well as outside towards the city. MISK ART INSTITUE was brought to the middle of the pavilion to stress its fundamental role in the process of integrating and spreading art through the city, by placing a reflective surface on the middle wall. Finally, in order to emphasize integration, the two boxes were weaved together, creating a loom-like shade, inspired by the traditional loom. The warp threads are attached under tension vertically between the two boxes, bringing them closer. While the weft threads create the weave. This pattern will, in turn, create an interesting shade that compliments the floor pixels.

MASAHA is a free space, an open air, an empty canvas that is ready for new brush strokes and urban sculptures to form.

The grid remains, but the colors are removed, leaving space for the visitors to fill. Also, some grid pixels escaped the box boundary and spread outside

“Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, a traditionally female interior wall decoration, is an ancient art form considered as a key element of the identity of the region of Asir. Women invite female relatives of various age groups to help them in their homes. The application of the art in most households ensures its viability within the community, and local individuals have created galleries within their houses in order to safeguard it. “ This type of art was specifically chosen because it’s very spontaneous, and enhances social bonding and solidarity among the community. And it stresses MASAHA’s messege of bringing art to the outdoors.
The contemporary box contributed with light pixels (represting digital art), and green pixels (representing sustainable art), which have spread inside MASAHA, as well as outside towards the city
