letter from the head of school Dear Friends, This year marks an important milestone in the history of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. Our school opened its doors on Sept. 9, 1959, with 70 preschool children. This year’s Convocation was celebrated on September 9, 2019 – 60 years to the day our school opened – with 1,340 students. We were thrilled to call Golden Bear nation together on Oct. 4 for a very special Homecoming celebration. A pep rally, parade and other festivities, followed by our Holy Innocents’ Golden Bears playing our first-ever varsity football game on Baker Field made for an historic event. We have planned a very special Alumni Reunion weekend for Oct. 25-26. Come and join your classmates and fellow alumni for a weekend of activities, fellowship and fun. To further memorialize our 60th anniversary, we have produced a commemorative book and video that tell the amazing story of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School from its humble beginnings to its becoming the largest Episcopal parish day school in the United States. When we know our past, we can better appreciate our present and aspire to an even greater future.
global hearts and global hands. HIES is a member of Round Square, a network of 200 like-minded schools in more than 50 countries. This network connects us to the world through conferences, exchanges, service opportunities and global partners willing and ready to communicate, cooperate and collaborate. HIES is the only Round Square in Georgia. Learn more in this Torchbearer about the global impact of our Golden Bears. This year’s graduating class is already setting records. The Class of 2020 is the largest graduating class in the history of Holy Innocents’ with 139 seniors. Given the talent, character and school spirit of this senior class, we have high expectations that this class will set many records. While our past is one of passion and perseverance and our present is impressive and expansive, the real excitement lies in the possibilities of our future. Holy Innocents’ is poised to make a transformative leap. We are beginning the largest capital campaign in the history of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. It is our time to transform 805 Mount Vernon Highway with state-ofthe-art learning spaces for our students to explore and discover, inviting and dynamic social spaces for our community to gather and connect, and work spaces for our talented faculty to collaborate and innovate. As we begin the 60th year of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, may each one of us take some time to reflect on far we have come, celebrate the countless lives we have touched and envision an even brighter future, while never losing sight of who we are.
What started out as a small parochial school in Sandy Go Bears! Springs now has a global reach as we more fully embrace our mission to develop in students “a sense of service to the world community.” The school-wide theme for this year is internationalism. Realizing that our planet is more inter-connected and inter-dependent, we must be intentional in developing students with global minds,

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School was founded by Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in 1959 and initially served ages 3 through first grade. The church itself began as a mission in 1872 following the American Civil War to serve orphaned children and the poor of Atlanta and was funded in part by St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (Cathedral of St. Philip). The name, Holy Innocents’, is in memory of the infants slaughtered by King Herod when he attempted to kill Jesus as an infant. The school opened with 72 enrolled students under the direction of Lillabel West. A committee consisting of the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church’s Vestry oversaw the operation of the school with the aid of consultants from Emory University who authored the non-graded approach to education. The school grew a grade each year through the mid 1960s. Barbara Chambers replaced Lillabel West as headmaster in 1962. She had an education degree and gave the school the necessary background to move forward as a legitimate school. She was followed by Elliott Galloway in 1965. Growth became more rapid under his tenure, adding two grades a year for each year. At that time, the school served pre-school through eighth grade and was incorporated as Holy Innocents’ Parish School, Inc. with the rectory establishing and serving as the Board of Trustees. The majority of the board members were required to be Episcopalian and had to be members of the Holy Innocents’ Parish. The new corporation was owned by the vestry and the warden of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church. The limited space made the newly added grades an overcrowding issue. The decision to drop the newly established ninth grade just months into its inaugural year was not popular with Galloway, who resigned shortly afterward. He was replaced by Dr. J. Russell “Rusty” Frank in 1969. Frank felt controlled growth was necessary and that seventh grade was as high as Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School would go until a feasibility study was conducted. He also believed that athletics were important, and he hired an athletic director to established a sports program. The school played its first soccer game that fall. It was also in 1969 that the first African-American student joined the student body at Holy Innocents.’ In 1970 the school’s name was changed to Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, Inc. and a new approach toward growth came with the first capital campaign, “Blueprint for a Decade.” Through its three phases, this capital campaign added buildings for classrooms and offices, a library, a gym, and classrooms for music and art. Alice Malcolm, former parent volunteer and teacher, became interim headmaster in 1975. She saw the school through its first accreditation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Del Coggins was appointed headmaster the following year. In 1981, the school was able to purchase another much needed eight acres from Life of Georgia, an insurance company. This purchase more than doubled the campus’ size and made it possible to build an athletic field. When Del Coggins resigned as headmaster, Alice Malcolm was appointed headmaster, and Edward England became assistant headmaster.

The CHI (Classrooms for Humanities and Imagination) Campaign was completed in 1988 and created the space that housed classrooms for music and art as well as an auditorium which seats 356. That same year the opportunity to expand again presented itself when Fulton County decided to sell the James L. Riley Elementary School and its 11 acres. The “Continuation in Excellence” capital campaign began in 1989 to renovate the newly acquired Riley Elementary School which made an Upper School possible. And in 1991, a ninth grade was added – those students would become the first graduating class. In 1993, another opportunity came for expansion with the purchase of 3.3 acres of land bringing it to its present 43 acres. At that time HIES ranked fourth in size among the Atlanta independent schools with 1,140 students which also made it the largest Episcopal school in the continental United States. In 1996, Dr. Susan R. Groesbeck was named headmaster who saw the advancement of technology at the school and the launch of its first website. She was replaced by Kirk Duncan in 2003 who rolled out a pioneer laptop program, putting laptops in the hands of every student. Gene Bratek took over as headmaster in 2011 and oversaw the renovation of Alumni Hall and experienced a shift with the rector no longer also serving as Chairman of the Board of the school. Paul Barton took over as headmaster in 2014 and supervised the construction of the state-of-the-art STEM building. Today HIES is the largest parish day school in the United States, and the major parochial school in the Diocese. As the only Episcopal PK3-12 school in Georgia, it offers a coeducational experience for youths with a focus on the individual, encouraging students to explore their abilities and the world around them in a loving and nurturing environment. Residing among neighborhoods in Sandy Springs, it possesses a unique community feeling for its students and their families, tucked away from the big city. It is accredited by Cognia and the Southern Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Southern Association of Independent Schools, the Georgia Independent School Association, the Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools, the Secondary School Admission Test Board and the Georgia High School Association.

Aton reflects on 35 years at HIES
by Dunn Neugebauer,
W
hen Lower School physical education teacher Randi Aton recalls her beginnings at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, she can’t help but do it with some questions. “How is it that we land where we land? Is it luck? Coincidence? Fate?” The answers are up for argument and conversations; the fact that Randi has been and remains an integral part of the HIES family is not. After graduating from University of Georgia in 1984, she came to us as a 23-year-old, and the positive laws of karma followed her here on Day 1.
“At the pre-planning faculty meeting, a young, red-headed and brilliantly smiling woman approached me and introduced herself as Lucie. She said she was the new P.E. teacher,” Randi remembered. “Oh my goodness, I thought I was supposed to be the new P.E. teacher. Did they not get my contract? Did I miss something? No one told me there would be two of us here.” 10

S P O R T S I N F O R M AT I O N D I R E C T O R
And so it began. Randi’s start came in the old MAC gym, formerly located behind the Lower School. Alice Malcolm was the Headmaster, and Randi remembers her with respect and some healthy fear.
said. “Even when Lucie and I were the youngest members of the faculty, we had carte blanche and we remained beyond excited. Mrs. Alice turned us loose and we were off and running. Literally.”
“She was a feisty, petite, blonde woman with large rectangular eye glasses that she peered over at you when speaking. This was intimidating as a 23-yearold. Still, she was an astonishing forethinking, a trusting soul, who firmly believed in the capacity of each member she brought into the Holy Innocents’ fold,” Aton said.
Speaking of running, that was another thing Coach A and B loved to do. Often getting up before school, and sometimes during school (“on breaks of course!”), the two would plan lessons while trotting up and down Mt. Vernon and beyond.
It was and still is a family Randi continues to help create. She and Lucie Bornholm (Coach A and Coach B), were the sugar and spice of our campus until Lucie’s passing in 2017. Where there was one, there was the other, and the final verdict was further proof of two of Alice Malcolm’s great hires.
Out of this came an after-school 6ththrough-8th grade running team. “We recognized that many of our students enjoyed running as well,” Randi remembered. “It didn’t matter to us how fast they were or weren’t, we just wanted them to be a part of our team. Looking back, I believe the kids thought that being with Lucie and I was pretty cool. It was mutual, we enjoyed being with them as well.”
“She gave us the leeway to create the best programs we knew how,” Randi
Not one to let a great idea go to waste, the running team led Coach A and B to
meeting with a local track coach at Aunt Charlie’s one night down in Buckhead. The night wasn’t filled with idle chatter, however, it led to the beginning of a track program at Holy Innocents’, with the first meet later held in the spring of 1985 at Riverwood. “I have no clear memories of the results of that day,” Randi said. “Still, I do recall it was an exhilarating experience for both our runners and us. We didn’t know it at the time, but Lucie and I had planted the seed that would grow into one of the largest and most successful running programs in the state of Georgia. “Riding the wave of this, we went on to found the first cross country team here; an achievement I’m still immensely proud of.” To be clear, Randi’s ideas-sprung-intorealities don’t and didn’t stop with just running. She’s gone on to initiate programs such as Lower School Early Bear Fitness, Middle and Upper School track, and girls’ golf, all of which have now found their ways into our athletic curriculum. Through it all, perhaps our long-time coach’s success is brought on by her attitude of gratitude, something she
puts far before starting programs. “It’s amazing how lucky I have been. I was an Army brat. My parents, two older brothers, my younger sister and I had moved across the country. My parents were AMAZING people; their family was everything to them. Nothing we did was without consideration for what was best for all of us. The end of my dad’s tour of duty in Augusta would be the impetus for my landing the best job on earth – right here at HIES.” Randi’s taken and still takes the family closeness and applies it to here. Whether decisions by leadership or lessons prepared by faculty, she sees and helps it get done with the philosophy of what is best for our school. “It’s been astonishing,” she said. If all this isn’t enough, she goes about her role with another word in mind: fun! So while creating track, cross country, golf, fitness and the like, an important element of her “family” is to have fun while doing it. “Having fun gives you an opportunity to laugh together, sending cues that show we are alike in many ways,” she said. “We share commonalities, we are connected.” Or as another HIES coach
put it, “when you’re having fun, you don’t even realize you’re working hard.” Thirty-five years. She’s seen a lot. Created a lot. Cared and loved a lot. What stands out? “I’ve seen immense change, both in the physical plant and in personnel,” she said. “Perhaps the most impressive and significant change to me though has been the cultivation of diversity and inclusion within our school community. The recognition, acceptance and celebration that each individual is unique, and is safe to be him or herself. That’s the finest of all gifts.” Randi Aton, also, remains one of the finest of all our gifts. She’s seen on the campus with a smile, and it’s a genuine one. Her gratitude can’t be faked. As she concluded: “I can state beyond a shadow of a doubt that being a part of this family has been one of the most gratifying happenings in my life. The children bring me great joy. Being here feels like home. I am, and forever will be, grateful.” And to say the least, Holy Innocents’ is grateful for Randi Aton, as well. More than grateful.
Teacher publishes first novel Middle School English teacher Jeanine Englert received the thrill of a lifetime this summer with the launch of her first published book, “Lovely Digits.” Part romance, part mystery, the book offers its own thrills with the story of Lucy Wycliffe, a quirky, single body prepper whose life takes an unexpected
turn when she partners with the new town constable. In 2018, Mrs. Englert’s novel, her seventh completed work, was a finalist for the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Awards. She also received the 2017 Daphne Award. At the Romance Writers Conference, her novel caught the attention of a publisher and the digital book hit the virtual shelves on June 12 of this year. “It’s been a really fun experience and I’m hoping this will be the first of many books,” Mrs. Englert said.

Playing at Home by Dunn Neugebauer,
When you looked at the 2019 HIES varsity football schedule and saw a home date slated for Friday, Oct. 4, the instructions from the school were very simple and direct: “Do NOT go to Riverwood. We repeat, do NOT go to Riverwood.” That’s because that night – Homecoming for the record – marked the first EVER varsity football game on the HIES campus in the program’s history. The Bears took on Mt. Vernon at 4:30 p.m. in a region contest. “We were excited about this – the first game played here at our school,” Coach Todd Winter said. “The atmosphere was electric.” Coach Winter is only the second varsity head football coach in HIES history – he

took over for Ryan Livezey three years ago; Livezey is now the athletic director at Mt. Pisgah. Coach Winter – who is in his third year at the helm – has the team going in the right direction, as the Bears went 3-7 his first year before improving to 6-6 last season. The 2018 Bears went to the second round of the playoffs, and in doing so became the first No. 24-seed to ever advance. They graduated only five seniors from that roster.
49-14 victory. After an early Mt. Vernon touchdown, the Bears reeled off 49 of the next 56 points in rolling to a 49-14 win over the Mustangs before a packed and adrenaline-filled stadium. In the final period, the Bears drove it 87 yards for their final TD, set up by a 74-yard run from quarterback Matt Davis that took it to the Mustang five. Cox ran it in two plays later from the 1 to finish the scoring.
The Golden Bears (No. 2) opened the 2019 season ranked No. 12 and are led by a host of stars, including running back Michael Cox, who last year broke season records in rushing yards and touchdowns.
“We were thrilled to celebrate our 60th birthday and 2019 Homecoming with the first-ever varsity football game played on Baker Field,” Tony Watkins, athletic director, said. “The energy on campus was electric for this community-wide event. This was a big boost not only for our football program but for our fans, families and student body alike.”
As of the publication of this issue of Torchbearer, the Golden Bears are undefeated, including the Homecoming game vs. Mt. Vernon, which ended in a

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your More turtles! details coming soon. by Dunn Neugebauer,
Back in the ’80s, the Turtle Race – and this is in capital letters for a reason – was one of THE things at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. It began with our Lower School kids hiking down to the river and, besides collecting artifacts, each kid would come back with a turtle. An idea was formed in the minds of the administration – it was time to put those turtles to use. And so it began … and the race came complete with bells and whistles. The kids nurtured their turtles for a few days or weeks, got them “race ready” and the Turtle Races of the ’80s became more than just a ‘thing.’ Before the kids “started up their turtles,” there was a parade of the jockeys – all adorned in uniforms and costumes, with the judges highly
S P O R T S I N F O R M AT I O N D I R E C T O R
adorned as well. In the middle of the athletic fields, two circles were drawn – one the “starting line,” and an outside circle for the finish. The kids and faculty stood outside the outer circle. The jockeys took their turtle to the center ring and – bam! – the gun went off. The first turtle to reach the outside circle was the winner. But that wasn’t all. In pure horserace form, the winning turtle and the winning jockey received a prize. Each class also had a theme – each paraded around the field hoping to win a coveted trophy. “There were about 750 kids screaming on the playground encouraging the turtle to ‘stick your head out or you won’t get anywhere’,” our own Dorothy Sullivan recalled. “It was chaotic, hilarious and fun.”
A great example of the participation involved our very own Mrs. Simpson, as the entire class dressed up as characters from the top show “The Simpsons.” Niki herself came as Marge, complete with the bright blue dress and the hair piled high. “I don’t know if I still have that dress, but I’m still willing to help out,” Ms. Simpson said with a laugh. The race ended in the mid ’90s, regretfully, but this year returned to HIES and, in pure 21st Century style, consisted of robotic turtles. Students crafted turtles in the robotics lab and brought them to the Oct. 4 pep rally for a face-off. Set in the center of the gym, the turtles raced in record time, besting their natural predecessors with the power of tech under their shells.

Friends HIES and Asahigaoka When Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School leaders speak about developing global minds, global hearts and global hands in students, there is no better example of that than the partnership between HIES and Asahigaoka High School in Sapporo, Japan. Since the two schools were formally united as sister schools in March 2003, the relationship has been well nurtured and has deeply impacted students, families and teachers in both countries through travel, home stays and immersion activities. 14
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE
The 17-day visit to Japan in July 2019 included travel throughout Kyoto, with 10 Upper School students visiting historic sites, temples, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Hiroshima, a monkey park and food markets. The students were accompanied by Robin Gafford, Lower School administrative assistant and longtime coordinator of the exchange, and Paul Barton, head of school, making the first-ever visit to Asahigaoka by an HIES head since the exchange trips began in 2004. In the second half of their Japanese
adventure, HIES students were paired with Asahigaoka students and their families for home stays and the school visit. On campus, students participated in classes, toured the campus, took an overnight field trip to a hot springs bath resort, presented stories about their life in Atlanta and at HIES, and took part in the school’s annual festival, a weeklong celebration similar to homecoming. Their host student served as their guide and partner on campus. Mr. Barton and Ms. Gafford also went on home stays with school faculty.

“The home stay is an important component of the trip,” Mr. Barton said. “It’s not easy to immerse yourself and assimilate to new food and a time change. Some of our students were kind of uncomfortable but had to work through that discomfort, which can be transformational.”
To prepare for the home stays, the group attended meetings to discuss different aspects of the trip and watched videos about protocol, food, baths, Shinto and Buddhism. They found that food in particular presented some challenges but also a unique reflection on the culture and the local resources. They were overwhelmed by the Japanese hospitality, Mr. Barton noted, even while eating items such as eel for breakfast. “The students embraced it and dove right in,” Ms. Gafford said. “They found a way to communicate that transcends a language barrier and the bonds formed so quickly. What really sets the trip apart is the students’ chance to get to know each other and form relationships with their host families.” HIES will have the opportunity to play host in January when the school welcomes 10 students and two faculty members from Asahigaoka. The Japanese students will stay with the HIES family of the student they hosted in Japan, which allows them to further the friendships they started in Sapporo.
The visiting students will spend time on campus but also will tour CNN, the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the Atlanta History Center and the Center for Civil and Human Rights, eat lunch at the Varsity and enjoy some free time with their host families. They may go to church with them or to other activities.
“Japanese kids are very enamored with Western culture and they want to practice their English,” Ms. Gafford said. “Their visit gives us a chance to return the hospitality.” Mr. Barton hopes that some of their takeaways from Japan will continue to penetrate their lives as well as school culture. For example, part of the HIES mission is to develop “respect for self and others,” a lesson that was demonstrated frequently in Sapporo, from the way people greeted each other to the lack of trash throughout the cities. “There is an incredible sense of respect and reverence for each other, the environment, their elders and their culture,” Mr. Barton said. Josie Barton ’16 has treasured memories of her 2014 trip to Japan, especially the friendships she formed with Asahigaoka students. Since that time, she has expanded her circle of friends after traveling through Southeast Asia over the past year. After graduating from Tulane University in spring 2020,
she plans to return to Japan and also visit South Korea and Thailand before starting work in London. Josie encouraged other students to explore the country, the culture and new friendships and to embrace the differences between Asia and the Western world. “[Japan] has reserved its culture and traditions in an unparalleled
way,” Josie said. “My fondest memories from the trip were spending time with my friends, both American and Japanese. Even though we couldn’t speak perfectly with each other, I learned a lot about them and their culture.” Look for the visiting Japanese students on campus Jan. 4-11, 2020. Students interested in going on the Japan trip in 2021 may speak with Robin Gafford in the LS office. Asahigaoka High School has 960 students and 80 faculty/staff members. It is at the top of the rankings of more than 50 high schools in Sapporo.

Retirements from HIES Cindy Harder
Ellen Blake
Ann Fay
Cindy Harder served at Holy Innocents’ for 31 years, where she was effective in many capacities – as Lower School and Middle School P.E. teacher, department chair, and varsity girls’ tennis coach. She began our tennis program in 1990 and ran it the following 29 years.
Ellen Blake was with us 37 years; she was hired by Alice Malcolm to teach Middle School math.
In Ann Fay’s 44 years, she pretty much did it all. Starting and finishing her career in the Lower School, there was and is little she wasn’t involved in.
She also coached volleyball and swimming during her time and remained an active force in the overall fitness of the Holy Innocents’ family, whether Lower, Middle or Upper School. Former HIES student Molly Niepoky summed up her coach this way. “The thing I remember about her is she was and is always so positive. You could always tell she cared about not only your tennis, but about you as a person.”
Ellen later moved back to the Lower School as an assistant, never losing her dedication to both our students and overall excellence of HIES.
“I was hard to get rid of!” she said with a laugh. She led the Lady Bears to a state title in 2002 and back-to-back region champions the past two seasons.
As the school grew, Alice put Ellen in charge of starting the Upper School math department in the early 90s – at the time there were three teachers in English, Science and Math and 38 students.
“The greatest gift I’ve received from my years at Holy Innocents’ are the relationships and the friendships I’ve made with such remarkable people. As I’ve gone through numerous happy and difficult times in my life, these friends have rejoiced with me and supported me. I count so many as blessings in my life and will continue to do so.”
She started in 1975 as Lower School secretary for then Dean of Students, Alice Malcolm. Calling subs for the faculty and helping the business office with reports for the Board of Trustees were just some of her involvement. From there it was on to the business office, where she sent reports to the Board, did accounts payable, and reported to Alice Malcolm, then the headmaster. In 2009 it was back to the Lower School as sub coordinator, science lab assistant, art assistant, 1st and 2nd grade assistant, helped at the front desk and “wherever they needed me to go.” “I think I pretty much covered the whole school in my time here,” Ann said with a smile. “Still, HIES has been a very big part of my life all these years. It’s where I formed many great friendships and where I met my husband and love of my life in Bobby Fay. “Alice Malcolm was like an older sister for me when I was single and we remained good friends until her passing. Also, all the emotional support I received when I lost my husband will never be forgotten.”

Cathy was with us 40 years in the Primary School, and perhaps her time here was best summed up in the words of Primary School Principal Greg Kaiser, as he put it this way:
Jody served 33 years as a Pre-K assistant. Once again, Mr. Kaiser offered wonderful words and praises for his long-time colleague and friend.
After 20 years at Holy Innocents’, Nurse Tammy Green, MSN, RN, NCSN, is departing the Lower School to accept a position in the baccalaureate nursing program at Kennesaw State University.
“How do you sum up a 40-year career dedicated to helping children learn and flourish? I can’t even begin to articulate in a few short words all that Cathy has meant to our school, so I will simply say that, in my book, there is no greater compliment than to be called a great teacher of children. Speaking not only as a colleague, but also as a parent who has had two children fortunate enough to be in her class, I say with great certainty that Cathy Armata is one of the best I’ve ever known.”
“She came to us in 1987 and has been a part of our faculty team for more than 30 years, most of those as a lead kindergarten teacher. When I think of Jody, the first thing that comes to mind is her laugh, which she shares frequently and joyfully. It rings through our hallways like a bell, and the joy she so obviously finds in being a teacher is irresistible to students and colleagues alike. There are no words to adequately express how grateful we are to Jody, so I will say only that she has done a very hard job, very, very well, and she retires now with the gratitude of the thousands of lives that she has touched in her time at HIES.
“My years have been full of friendship, support and laughter,” Jody said. “We have shared our children’s and student’s accomplishments, graduations, funerals, weddings, divorces, babies and grandbabies. It’s been 33 years filled with circle moments. I am honored and blessed to have had a job I dearly loved, and to have shared my years with so many of you.”
Previously she worked as clinical faculty at KSU, serving as a guest speaker and presenting on panels. This new role is full time as a lecturer and instructor and is expected to be a long-term position. Her predecessor is retiring at age 76. “It’s a life opportunity,” Nurse Green said. “It’s bittersweet.” In her time at HIES she has seen many students grow from Lower School all the way through Upper School and she has worked closely with many families, particularly for their students who share her Type 1 diabetes. “I have a special place in my heart for those kids because I know how they feel, but I’m going to miss all the kids so much,” she said. “I’ve been here for the kids but they fulfill me. I’ve been blessed to be in the Holy Innocents’ family.” In addition to caring for HIES students day in and day out, Nurse Green also served the community by contributing several articles about juvenile diabetes to the SAGE Journal and serving as a speaker for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Her knowledge and skills have been a tremendous resource to the school and beyond and she will be greatly missed.

HIES, Atlanta Opera Join Forces for Arts Education by Christina Mimms,
For many people, the notion of attending an opera is a foreign concept, even if the performance is held in their own city. So how can this 400-year-old art form become accessible and even enjoyable for young people today? That is, in fact, a chief goal of the Atlanta Opera, which has partnered with Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School to bring performances to campus that will be relatable as well as immersive. In the 2018-2019 academic year, Lower School students enjoyed a performance of “The Barber of Seville.” This year, “Hansel and Gretel” will come to campus, and fourth- and fifth-grade students will take part in the show with puppetry as well as singing. They will be

provided with costumes from the Atlanta Opera. “This will immerse students in opera in a very different way, which helps to demystify opera and engage younger children,” Heidi Domescik, director of fine arts, said. In the last school year the Upper School traveled to see “West Side Story” and this year they and Middle School will see a different interpretation of “Cinderella” called “La Cenerentola.” Ms. Domescik hopes that students also will be able to take advantage of attending dress rehearsals at the Opera, which are free and open to the public, with advance registration. Witnessing unique translations of wellknown stories can be very powerful for
audiences, according to Jessica Kiger, audience development and education manager for the Atlanta Opera. “Enough can’t be said about social-emotional learning through song and storytelling,” she said. “The live human interaction is amazing and a 45-minute show on the school campus is a wonderful way to introduce students to opera.” The Atlanta Opera has offered its studio tour program, which visits area schools, since 1979 and has served more than 1 million students. Because the score is re-written and adapted for students, and usually sung in English, students can understand what they are seeing and hearing. In addition, the Opera provides teachers with cross-curricular activities that they can use before and after the shows. For example, they may study the show for a science lesson on sound travel or they may study the history of opera and the countries of origin for some famous operas. The partnership between HIES and the Atlanta Opera is a key goal of the Fine Arts Department. With 88 percent of students across all divisions enrolled in fine arts courses, the collaborations with local organizations such as the Opera and the High Museum of Art help to feed the interests of students as well as their families. The relationships would not be possible without several key components. “The arts curriculum has more flexibility than other areas and the administration has been very supportive,” Ms. Domescik noted. “We’ve received very positive feedback from the Arts Alliance and parents.”

er name is Mary Ellen “Nellie” Peters Black. I would gamble that everyone reading this article does not know her name. She was born in 1851 and died August 5, 1919, 40 years before Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School was started. Yet we are all on 805 Mt. Vernon Highway because of this extraordinary woman and many more like her.
Performers from the Atlanta Opera will return to HIES this year.
Supportive parents include Mike and Lys Paulhus, parents of fourth-grader Caroline and third-grader Camille. With Mr. Paulhus on the board of the Atlanta Opera, the close relationship between HIES and the Opera will sustain for years to come. “We were attracted to HIES partly because of the school’s commitment to the arts,” he said. “Part of the Opera’s strategic plan is accessibility and community engagement. Opera is not something kids would necessarily be exposed to and it’s good to see different types of art. Kids can appreciate opera at an earlier age than you think.” Mr. Paulhus said that the student audiences at HIES can expect a wonderful performance from the studio artists who are traveling with “Hansel and Gretel.” “They are classically trained and highly talented but they are younger performers in the earlier stage of their careers,” he said. Being a little younger than a mainstage Atlanta Opera singer, he said they can appeal to the student audiences in a different way. Lower School students will see and perform with “Hansel and Gretel” on May 5, 2020, and Middle and Upper School students will see “La Cenerentola” on a date to be determined.
Nellie grew up in Atlanta, the daughter of a wealthy family. She was raised in the Episcopal Church and was part of elite Atlanta society. She graduated from Miss Maria Eastman’s Brooke Hall, one of the best finishing schools in America. Home from Pennsylvania, her father offered her a diamond ring as a gift for her graduation. She declined and asked for a saddle horse instead. Cheekily naming the animal, Diamond, she began to ride to the poorest areas of the city to tutor and assist the poor. She was especially drawn to the orphans and children impacted by the Civil War and the burning of Atlanta. She lobbied the second Bishop of Georgia, the Rt. Rev. John W. Beckwith to begin the first mission in Atlanta. Her dream was to care and teach children who were the innocents of the war. In 1872, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church began on land given by her father. While passionately working to keep the mission open for the rest of her life, Nellie became an advocate for education. In 1896, she organized the Atlanta Free Kindergarten Association. Her dedication to the cause for the next 20 years led Atlanta to adopt a Kindergarten program for the city in 1919. In the interim, she helped start the first free hospital in Atlanta in 1890. She cofounded Grady Hospital when the city grew to need a larger institution. Her heart was always in education. She persistently and eventually successfully lobbied the Governor to admit women to the University of Georgia. Nellie died almost exactly 40 years before Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School began. The mission she loved into being and nurtured for decades bore the marks of her passion. Only five years after moving to Sandy Springs and before the main church building could be built, the leaders of Holy Innocents’ decided to start a preschool and kindergarten. The commitment of the church over the next sixty years combined with the passion and dedication of educators and leaders has led us to today. What started as a mission to care for the innocents of the Civil War has grown into the largest parish-based Episcopal School in America. All of us at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church celebrate this joyful anniversary with all of you: the students, families, teacher, administrators, alumni, and friends of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. We are honored to be on this campus with you. We are excited to see what lies ahead. We are delighted to share the rich legacy of love and education with all of you. May God bless you all. Adventures In Art by Christina Mimms,
When Lauren Glazer ’11 posted an Instagram photo of herself at an art exhibit three years ago in New York, she had no idea that the photo would impact anyone, let alone change her life. The photo took on a life of its own earlier this year when Lauren learned that the image, which shows her standing on

the Ad Attivazione Cinetica 6B, 19662015, created by artist Marina Apollonio, became the primary marketing image for “Vertigo,” a contemporary art exhibition at the Mumok museum in Vienna, Austria. When the museum, which is the largest art museum in central Europe, contacted her about using her image, she didn’t believe it at first. “I thought it was a scam,” she said. “I did research and made sure it was legit.” Lauren agreed to the museum’s proposal and sent the original files. In May, she and
her mother traveled to Vienna to view the exhibit in person and were stunned to see her photo on street advertisements and even in a 20-foot reproduction on the side of the museum building. Her image also ended up in Air France magazine in an advertisement for the exhibit. “I couldn’t go a few feet without seeing my face!” Lauren said. “It was a surreal experience.” At the exhibit, Lauren was thrilled to meet Apollonio, who speaks no English. “We were having a silent conversation but she just lit up when she realized it was me,” Lauren said. Since that time, Lauren’s work as an art world influencer on Instagram has grown in myriad ways. She was able to meet new artists in Austria, learned more about contemporary art and added a number of European followers to her account, which to date is more than 10,700. She has kept in touch with the Mumok as well. The journey to her current status has been unique. At HIES, Lauren took art classes every year, many with Judie Jacobs. “Lauren was so dedicated and one of the most focused artists,” Mrs. Jacobs said. “She’s always stayed focused and it has paid off for her.” Arts classes were among Lauren’s favorites among her course load at HIES. “Mrs. Jacobs’ classes were my creative outlet and she pushed me to follow my passion,” Lauren said. She also enjoyed the class field trips to the High Museum to see in person the art that they had discussed in class. “I loved having those connections and hearing what the docents had to say about the museum and its exhibitions,” Lauren said. “I still visit the High whenever I come home.” When Lauren was an Upper School student, Mrs. Jacobs and Heidi Domescik added an art history program in which

students participated in both a history class and a visual arts class. “When I went to Paris and I saw Van Gogh’s ‘Bedroom’ painting, I dragged my mom across the gallery because I was so excited to see something I learned about in my art history class,” Lauren said. “It pushed me to study art history [in college] because I always loved learning the how and why behind an artwork.” After graduating from Queen’s University in Charlotte, N.C. with a B.A. in art history in 2015, Lauren applied to the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York to pursue a master’s in art business, which she completed in 2017. Knowing no one in the city and moving into “a 450-squarefoot box,” as she said, was a bit daunting but Lauren’s mom visited for extended periods about every six weeks. “It was a huge culture shock,” Lauren said. “People in New York are very vocal and public transportation is very different from being in your car.” Her “day job” is publicist at Wolf PR in New York and in the evenings and on

weekends, she strolls the art galleries near her Hell’s Kitchen apartment, often with her fiancé Joseph Lytle, a cyber security expert. They were engaged in June in Newport, R.I.
Art followers have contacted her directly to ask for suggestions on which exhibits to visit and others have used her Instagram feed as a guide while touring around New York.
As an influencer, Lauren sees her role as creating access to art. By using her education and knowledge of art and media, she can provide an in-depth opinion about works and the message of the artists. Her goal is to encourage others to visit and enjoy the wide variety of exhibits available not just in New York but in other cities as well. She takes time to research exhibits and artists before she sets foot in a gallery, particularly if she is invited by other publicists or by artists themselves.
Becoming an influencer requires one, a good photo editing app and two, a solid amount of networking – going to events, meeting people, sharing ideas and always growing but also watching what one posts and writes. While Lauren’s photo took her on an extremely positive journey to Vienna – and beyond – she knows other influencers who have damaged their own efforts through negative statements or posts. Even at exhibits where she personally hasn’t liked the artwork, she can always find something that she appreciates about one piece or the artist’s use of color or medium. “Screenshots are real and you need to be careful what you share,” she said. “Come from a place of being nice to everyone, no matter where you are.”
Being an art influencer on social media differs greatly from influencers in fashion and beauty as those positions come with significant paychecks from big brands. Top influencers have millions of followers, sponsorships from international brands and may even create products in partnerships with well-known companies. Instagram influencer marketing is a $2 billion industry and growing, according to Hopper, a U.K.-based social media company. Influencers with a high number of followers and a top engagement rate can earn six figures or more annually. “I do it for the love of art and to share it,” Lauren explained. “It’s meant to educate, to help people understand art and to motivate them.”
As far as future plans, Lauren hopes her work will continue to grow within the art world. She studied art preservation and conservation at Sotheby’s and may pursue work in that area but she also has ideas about opening an artist’s studio to support fledgling artists. With wedding plans and a family in mind for the future, she expects that she will eventually return to Atlanta. Follow Lauren and her art adventures on Instagram @laurencsglazer.

David E. Carpenter ’96 David Carpenter received the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Distinguished Alumnus Award at the annual State of the School program held April 18, 2019. He is currently a managing partner and founder of Tilted Windmills Theatricals, an entertainment production company based in New York City. He and John Pinckard are currently producing the hit off-Broadway play Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic by Matthew Cox. TWT is currently developing a new interactive play by Matt Cox The Magnificent Revengers and a Los Angeles production of the cult hit Reefer Madness the Musical. David’s career started at HIES when he directed a play for competition. He also held lead roles in the spring and fall plays. “There was no ceiling on what I thought I could accomplish. I remember going to see actor friends at productions
in other schools (which were way better funded than ours) and thinking, ‘yeah, but all they get to do is act in the shows. They don’t know anything about hanging lights or building sets. We get to do it all because there isn’t anyone else to do it.’ I have immense respect for the work each individual does on shows. I know how hard everyone works to make this all appear so easy to our audience. That respect, drive, determination and passion was begun at HIES because there were no limits placed in front of me, but only possibilities.”
David continues to help the next generation of theater professionals by serving on the board of directors for Colt Coer, which is an off-Broadway nonprofit theater company. He has been able to teach younger producers about the business side of theater. “It’s a wonderful experience to give 15 years of knowledge to our company so that they can continue to produce amazing and
groundbreaking work,” he said.
David graduated from Bucknell University with a double major in English and theatre and a minor in dance. He has lectured on producing at Columbia University, Bucknell University, The University of New Mexico and the University of Florida at Gainesville.

Children have created sports shows and insect-themed shows, held lip-sync battles and enjoyed experiences they might not typically encounter. For example, many have monthly visits with animal trainers from nearby zoos. Children who are in treatments that limit their contact with people can watch and listen to the programs from their rooms and even call in to participate on air.

“The studio has really become an indirect form of therapy. It’s a fun place for kids to escape and hang out but it also tests their abilities outside of their room or physical therapy sessions,” Ms. Leach said. In 2017, Leach and her husband Jimmy relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville, where the Foundation is now headquartered. They welcomed their first child Flora Marie, who was born Dec. 10, 2018. to her parents, who still live in Atlanta, and HIES friends in the area. While area athletes and artists in the music industry frequent the Seacrest Studios at the Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville also draws major events such as the 2019 NFL Draft, during which “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota visited the studio. As many artists build time into their schedules to do charitable work, the in-hospital studios in the 10 different cities have provided them with a means to visit a lot of young people in a short amount of time. Guests at the various Seacrest
Taylor Swift helped launch the Seacrest Studio at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville in March 2016.
The Foundation, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2020 since launching its first studio at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, now works with about 90 colleges and universities to recruit interns to work in Seacrest Studios. More than 1,000 students, some of whom are former patients, have interned in a studio and some later launched careers in entertainment or journalism. Students interested in internships and hospitals looking to bring a studio to their facility may submit an application at ryanseacrestfoundation.org.

“I feel incredibly lucky to do what I do. I walk into work each day with one goal: helping kids heal,” Ms. Leach said. “What my family has been able to create together is more than I could have ever dreamed of.” As for her famous brother Ryan Seacrest, who holds multiple jobs these days, his passion keeps everyone going.
“People are always amazed by the amount of jobs Ryan is able to juggle,” Ms. Leach said. “He has excellent time management skills! However, in the midst of all he does and has been fortunate to experience, the Foundation is truly what is most meaningful to him. His ultimate mission, along with our family, is to help young patients feel like superstars and make a positive impact on their recovery.” Reflecting on her HIES years, Leach said, “I loved that our class size wasn’t too big and it allowed for our daily classes to be more intimate. I always felt like I knew my teachers and could get extra learning assistance if needed. I also loved that our class size allowed for me to take part in several different sports and activities that I may have not been able to do if I were at a larger school. I got a chance to try a variety of extracurricular activities and really learn where I had better strengths and areas I could improve upon, which carried with me once I left high school.”

THE BEST YEAR YET FOR HIES AND THE GEORGIA TAX CREDIT PROGRAM The 2019 Georgia Tax Credit Scholarship Program began last June and ended in the early part of this year. Holy Innocents’ had a record year with 323 participants and five different matching gift companies, earning over $1.08 million for financial aid. The State of Georgia Department of Revenue had increased the cap to $100 million this past year, and since they were not able to give away the full amount, we were able to keep all of the funds given to us.
Last school year we had 58 scholarship recipients from this source of financial aid. These students met all of HIES’s admissions requirements before being admitted and before being offered Tax Credit financial aid. Participating financial aid families must be able to fund a portion of their tuition as there was a cap of $9,817 on the amount of tax funds a student can receive this year. Remaining funds are kept in an endowment for future years’ use for approved students.
Strong participation by partnerships, LLCs and S-Corps led the way in giving. Support came from parents, grandparents, and parents of alumni, corporations, partnerships, trusts, and friends.
Thank you to everyone who took advantage of this simple and convenient way to redirect your taxes to support HIES financial aid. These Apogee tax credit funds free up other dollars for current financial aid students, faculty children, and new financial aid requests. Everyone wins!
HIES’ has participated in this program for 9 years, and it still sounds too good to be true — Georgia allows you to redirect your tax payment to Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. This costs you nothing! It is a free, easy way to support the HIES financial aid program. Your taxes will give deserving students the opportunity to join the HIES community.
If you are interested in this program for tax year 2020, pre-applies have begun through the Apogee Scholarship Fund.. You may sign up for 2020 by going to www.apogee123.org. For more information, email Mary Chris Williams at marychris.williams@hies.org.

2018-2019
Thank You! Thanks to your generous support, the 2018-2019 academic year was another milestone year at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. We had the highest Annual Fund donations the school has ever received. We also had very strong support from our parent community, with the highest grossing Parents’ Association Gala ever. This is a good sign as we prepare for the largest capital campaign in school history. You will be receiving more information on this in the months ahead. We were very fortunate to welcome three new staff members to the Development team this year: Whitney Amos, annual fund manager; Amy Hogan, major gifts officer; and Dorothy Sullivan, community liaison. As the school prepares for a capital campaign it is important to have the staff to help achieve this goal. During the 2019-2020 academic year we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of HIES. There will be many activities to honor all that has taken place during the past 60 years. We hope many of the people who supported HIES, and shaped the school to be what it is today, will return to campus. We will be sharing a 60th anniversary video and history book with you to commemorate our 60th anniversary. Please be on the lookout for them. With gratitude,
Michele Duncan

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The HIES Parents’ Association supports and enriches the school’s academic and community programs. The PA serves as a liaison to promote communication between parents and the school administration, faculty, and staff. The PA also facilitates Fundraising and Community Life committees that marshal the resources, talents and efforts of hundreds of parent volunteers to provide the “extras” that enrich the lives of HIES students and our community. In 2019, the Parents’ Association conducted several fundraising activities: the annual Tuition Raffle, sales of the Bear Benefits Card, Bingo Night, Bear WearHouse, Community Partner programs with the likes of Amazon, Publix, Kroger, and Mable’s Labels, and the exciting “Golden Bear Gala”. Altogether, Parents’ Association fundraising activities during the 2018-19 school year yielded record revenues for the Parents’ Association and enabled the PA to donate more than $400,000 to the School, to the direct benefit of HIES students and families. In addition to fundraising, our Parents’ Association also supports and funds the following programs, and offers them free of charge to the HIES community:
cultural awareness and drive inclusivity throughout our HIES parent community • 6th grade Cotillion class coordination • Prayer gathering for parents, held each month during the school year in Christ Chapel at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church • Support and service to HIES families in need through our Caring Bears program
GOLDEN BEAR GALA 2019 SPONSORS
The Golden Bear Gala chairs and their Gala committee organized a fabulous event and a huge fundraising success, producing record revenues for any HI gala, topping $500,000. FINE ARTS ALLIANCE
Founded in 2003, the Fine Arts Alliance (FAA) continues to grow through enthusiastic parent support. With committed volunteers, we are able to offer more ways than ever to support the award-winning HIES Fine Arts Department. Since a strong Fine Arts program benefits all students, every parent is encouraged to become involved. The FAA organizes parent volunteers to support chorus, band, orchestra, drama, visual arts, and media literacy programs. Parent volunteers assist in many areas, including receptions after performances, concessions, box office sales, and events like Open Mic Night, Movie Night, and the Upper School Film Festival. Additionally, the FAA decorates the campus for Christmas every year. The FAA provides resources to our students and teachers as the result of our fund-raising efforts. Our largest fundraiser is Heart for the Arts, a fashion show with an art and jewelry market, silent and live auctions, and brunch. This year, the event takes place on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Dues collected from the Invest in Excellence Program make up another significant source of funds. Other parent-centered fundraising activities include the annual holiday greenery sale. Funds are raised throughout the school year through the concession and box office sales for four theatrical productions and a highly popular community-building movie night for the Primary School and Lower School students and their families.
The funds raised by the Fine Arts Alliance last year contributed to the Fine Arts department in the following ways: • Academic affiliation with the High Museum of Art • Microphone rentals for all theatre productions • Visiting artist-in-residence Jordan Graves’ engagement • Scholarships and financial aid for fine arts student trips • A performance by the Atlanta Opera for Lower School students • The Performing Arts Banquet • Guest Clinicians for Band • Rental of The Springs Cinema for the US Film Festival • iPad for the Yearbook Staff
A key highlight in 2018-2019 was the seventh year of our Fine Arts Alliance partnership with the High Museum of Art, providing numerous opportunities to HIES students, faculty, and the parent community to attend events at the High and get involved in programs, some exclusive to our school. Another highlight was the engagement of artist-in-residence Jordan Graves. She worked with Upper School Coding in Art students to create a permanent interactive art installation, “Gathering Light,” in the STEM Building and worked with students in all four divisions of the school on different projects. Active parents are needed to help maintain our strong Fine Arts programs. For more information on how you can become involved, visit our page on the school’s website under Campus Life/Parent Organizations or contact Julie Goldberg, President of the Fine Arts Alliance.

HORIZONS ATLANTA Horizons Atlanta at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School believes that every child, regardless of background, should have the same chance at making a positive impact on his or her community. Our six-week academic enrichment program housed in the HIES Primary School and Upper School provides this opportunity to economically disadvantaged local public school students by eliminating critical barriers to success. Horizons students are challenged academically, socially, and physically through our Global Academy, a blend of project-based and service learning activities teaching each child how to be a productive global citizen. Horizons secures funding from local foundations, individuals, corporations,
and community organizations. In May of 2019, Horizons at HIES participated in Horizons Giving Day, a national effort to raise funds and awareness of the program. We surpassed our site’s goal of $50,000, thanks to many individual donations from the HIES community. The funds raised contribute to our operations and programming including our highly qualified staff, transportation, meals, field trips, and supplies. The program would not be possible without the support of the Holy Innocents’ community. Horizons would like to thank all of our volunteers, donors, and advisory council members for their time, talents, and generous resources.
