Having spent the better part (and the best parts thus far) of my professional career on 805 Mount Vernon Highway as a communications director, marketing guy and branding semi-guru, you would think by now I have the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School “sound byte” mastered, the elevator speech so firmly ensconced in my neocortex that I can roll it out there like a rhetorical red carpet on command, without even thinking about it. Once asked by anyone interested in knowing what HIES is all about, I would become a slobbering dog at the sound of Pavlov’s dinner bell and reflexively respond with a quick run-down of the basics: We’re the largest parish-based Episcopal school in the nation. Located in Sandy Springs (or Northwest Atlanta). PK3-12. Students that graduate from HIES matriculate to colleges of all sizes, locations and at every level of academic reputation across the country—and really the world. I may tell them about alums like Kelsey Randall ’05 (featured on p. 6) who attended Parsons School of Design before becoming an internationally recognized fashion designer. And if they wanted a few more specifics, I would start talking about the number of state championships the Golden Bears have won. I would tell them about longtime, outstanding coaches like Cindy Harder (featured on pp. 14-16). I would vouch for all the wonderful things they’ve heard about the HIES fine arts program. I would proclaim the academic achievements of our students in every division and make sure they knew that if they were looking for a school with the best, most engaged, dedicated and hardest working faculty, then they should look no further than this ITP den of Golden Bears. If I was looking for a “quick out,” I would tell them that we are, of course, an Episcopal School. “What does that mean?” They’ll ask. “Well, that will take a little time to explain,” I’ll sigh. “Let’s have a seat on these three-legged stools and discuss.”
Or perhaps I would point them toward the new Rector at HIEC, The Rev. Dr. Bill Murray, who is profiled in this magazine (pp. 18-19). If original words fail me, I can always rely on a recitation of the Mission Statement: “Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School develops in students a love of learning, respect for self and others, faith in God, and a sense of service to the world community.” The only trouble with that tactic is that it will sound like all I’m doing is quoting the Mission Statement, which is all that I would be doing. By the way, I was on the original Mission Committee that penned the first iteration of the Mission Statement. Theresa Jespersen, Middle School principal, chaired that committee and she also wrote a terrific Torchbearer column (p. 34). What Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School comes down to is “community.” It may be overused to the point of cliché. But clichés are clichés because they are true. HIES is about community, first, foremost and always— from the first lesson taught downtown in the original Holy Innocents’ in 1872 to the 2018 Round Square lectures given half-a-world away. It’s community. Community at HIES is not just the people, the physical or tangible. Community is the moments. Like the moments was saw Coach B smile, moments of celebrating a championship, being there when the ribbons are cut, the tassels turned, the bell rung. The heartbreaking beauty of Jim Barton’s funeral service. And this year’s All-School Convocation, which ranks up there with one of the greatest HIES moments of all time. These are the moments that don’t just define “community” at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, they define Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. Boiling all that down to its essence for a sound byte, an elevator speech or a tagline on a billboard is an inspiring work in progress. In the meantime, I hope a publication like this magazine will suffice as a way to describe who we are and what we mean by “community” at HIES. TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

HIES was pleased to welcome Kelsey Randall ’05 back to campus this fall as she used the school as a backdrop to photograph her new line for a major fashion magazine. During her time at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, Kelsey Randall ’05 embraced the fine arts experiences offered from AP Art classes to being a part of the yearbook staff. She found in HIES a community that encouraged her to live into her creative gifts. “What I always loved about Holy Innocents’ is that everyone supported the fact that I wanted to have a career in the arts,” Ms. Randall said. “I think a lot of times kids that want to work in creative fields are encouraged not to study that or to go to college for something else. My teachers always told me that was something I could do if I worked hard for it.”
“...everyone supported the fact that I wanted to have a career in the arts... My teachers always told me that was something I could do if I worked hard for it.”
After she graduated from HIES, Ms. Randall attended the Parsons School of Design (Class of 2009), winning the Parsons Critic’s Choice Award in 2008, and also founded “The Underground Runway” during her time there in order to provide senior students with the chance to showcase their work independent of the school. She now resides in New York City where she designs and drapes every piece of her collection, the Kelsey Randall line, which launched in the fall of 2015. Ms. Randall returned to the HIES campus in October along with her photographer and three models to use her alma mater as a backdrop for her new line to be showcased in a major fashion magazine. “We were shooting a back-to-school, sporty, fresh, young, athletic story for a major fashion publication that will be coming out this winter,” she said. “It’s so wonderful to be back on campus. Holy Innocents’ has really changed a lot, and it’s exciting to see the growth of the school and all the beautiful new buildings.” See more of Ms. Randall’s line, including the A-listers wearing her work, on Instagram (@kelsey.randall).

The Power of Love
The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, visited Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School and brought a message of love and joy to the All-School Convocation.
What does it mean to serve as the Bishop of North America? The Episcopal Church is actually located in 17 countries, of which the United States is one. So we have Episcopal churches, a small number, but Episcopal churches in Europe and in the continental U.S. as well as the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras, throughout South and Latin America... Haiti—it’s really an international church. So to be able to be a part of that and to provide some pastoral and spiritual leadership, that’s a real blessing and it’s an honor that I love doing.
So now since we’re short on time, I have a serious question. In light of the division in the country today— there was that terrible shooting last night in California—what is your The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry was elected recommendation for the student body to a nine-year term and confirmed at the 78th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. He when it comes to navigating today’s was installed as the 27th Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church on Nov. 1, 2015. safety concerns? Presiding Bishop Curry is the Chief Pastor and serves as President and Chief Executive Officer as well as Chair of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church.
Upper School student Zak Kerr interviewed Bishop Curry (both pictured above) as they walked to the Main Gym for the All-School Convocation on Thursday, Nov. 8.
Well, I would start off with the values that we hold, and our values come from the teachings of Jesus. One of the core teachings of Jesus, in Matthew 22, is where he says you are to love God and to love your neighbor as yourself. Love is not a sentimental thing; that’s not what Jesus was talking about. The love he’s talking about is unselfish, sacrificial, and living that really seeks the good and the well-being of others. Now, if we believe that, if that’s the value on which Continued >>> TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

we live our lives, then that will change our politics. That will change how we live together. That is a complete game changer. And I believe that’s where we must start off for students and also for this whole country. Then we will be able to have a political debate that doesn’t lead to hate. Then we will be able to have differences of opinion that don’t mean differences in our humanity. And then the vision of America as E pluribus unum (out of many, one) becomes a real possibility. It’s just like what you said at the royal wedding... If we were to harness the power of love again, it would be the second time humanity discovered fire. You’ve got it. Yeah, you’ve got a brother.
What has been the most profound spiritual moment of your life? This is serious stuff, you know. When I was a child, listening to my grandmother, who was a daughter of sharecroppers, granddaughter of slaves, telling me to always live your life for the Lord. That probably directed my life as much, if not more, than anything else. And it may be why I’m Presiding Bishop now, because of my grandmother. Bishop Curry, it has been an honor. It’s an honor to talk to you... God bless you. Zak Kerr will share his own reflections from his interview with Bishop Curry in an upcoming edition of C&G, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s student news magazine.

Rebekah Glover interviews The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry HIES sophomore Rebekah Glover wrote to Presiding Bishop Michael Curry in late October to request an interview for the Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS), where she volunteers. GaRRS provides broadcasts to those who are visually impaired or have difficulty with the printed word. To her surprise, Rebekah heard back, and the interview was scheduled to take place before the All-School Convocation on Thursday, Nov. 8. A GaRRS producer recorded the interview that took place in a HIES Main Gym classroom. Rebekah asked questions ranging from the Jesus Movement to the bishop’s experience with people with disabilities. They also discussed Bishop Curry’s most recent book “The Power of Love.” Rebekah plans to major in film and TV production in college. With experiences like interviewing the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, she’s well on her way to making a name for herself in the world of journalism and broadcast.

Cindy Harder: Health and Positivity Defined by Dunn Neugebauer,
S P O R T S I N F O R M AT I O N D I R E C T O R
She’s the type of person you can set your watch by — nothing flashy, no bells and whistles, and no “look at me” type philosophies. Instead, Cindy Harder remains one who simply shows up day after day, teaches her classes, coaches tennis, takes care of business and then drives home. Arriving at HIES in 1988 from Wisconsin where she was involved with Middle School and Upper School physical education and health in public schools, Coach Harder taught kindergarten through eighth grade here, as there wasn’t a high school at the time. When the Upper School was added in the early 90s, she was in on the changes as far as P.E. and health. “It was a lot of fun but a lot of challenge developing the Upper School curriculum,” Harder said. “A big focus was to refine the smooth transitions between the various P.E. divisions in skill development, sports psychology, health education and an innovative curriculum that would engage the 21st century student.” In the mid-90s, she moved to Middle School P.E. and Health while the Upper School was added; in 2005 she was named P.E. Chair and remains in that position today. Harder teaches activity both in and out of the classroom — she started our volleyball program at the JV level, then progressing to varsity and adding Middle School teams as the program expanded. She also taught 10 years of summer swimming. In 1990, she took over as Upper School girls tennis coach — another position she currently holds. Going
into this year, her teams have garnered one state title and three region championships to go with plenty of Elite 8 finishes. “Our programs are set up to encourage team camaraderie while dedicating to improvement,” she summarized. “If my players aren’t playing for the love of the game when they’re 45, I feel I’ve failed to inspire them. That is always my goal. Do they still play? Are they resilient people on and off the court?” Coach Harder practices what she preaches outside of school — she stays active in swimming, yoga, tennis, hiking, kick-boxing and yoga while enjoying reading and going to art museums. “I think cross training is the key to having a long athletic career,” she said. “It’s important not to just focus on one sport.” While she is one who has seen more than her share of changes on the courts, Coach Harder also has incorporated her P.E. teaching with the changing of the kids over the years. Inspired by the book “Spark” by John Ratey — she commented on how our PE programs expanded to include a huge variety of challenges and activities. “P.E. is not just for the athletes and the sportsminded,” she said. “It’s about the importance of exercise and movement — developing areas of the brain that serve as a vessel for academics. She also added that HIES has added creative projects — not only in physical education, but in the expanded Health Education program across divisions. “We’re working on a sports psychology program that spans from three-year-olds through seniors,” she said. “It incorporates teaching GRIT to students of all ages. How do you teach GRIT to a three-year-old? Perhaps you just tell them to start over. It’s all nonthreatening — teaching them how to approach a challenge with small steps that move forward. “The saying ‘Just do it’ from Nike is a good one, but our job is to teach them how to do it.” If the votes from her physical education employees past and present count, apparently Coach Harder is doing it right. Dan Healy — current Middle School. P.E. teacher and baseball coach in his 10th year working with Harder — sees it this way. “She has always been a great professional and a great friend. The bottom line is, she is the glue that holds the P.E. department together.” Former employee Laura Thomas Olsen added: “She is the most positive and compassionate person I know — still is a wonderful mentor and friend to me. Truly passionate and enthusiastic about coaching and physical education, she always challenged us to set high expectations with goals to reach for each year. She also challenged our students to set their own goals and to achieve their own personal records. I wouldn’t be the teacher I am today without her.” If all this isn’t enough, Harder’s innovations have kept up with the times while here at HIES. “Back in 1990 when it was announced Atlanta secured the Olympic games, all the P.E. teachers met at the World Congress Center and talked about how we’d start an Olympic day at school. It was decided the Middle School level would be the best one — they are curious and eager at that age. “When the Olympics were over, people were sick of hearing about them so we had to find a new angle. We came up with P.R. Day (Personal Record) day and incorporated it not only on the fields but in the classroom. Our Middle School teachers took that ball and ran with it — to this day they still do a great job.” 16

Personal records. Positive attitudes. Physical and mental activity. Harder teaches it all and lives it. And don’t think her players — past and present — don’t get the message. “She’s one of the most hopeful and positive people I’ve ever met,” former #1 player and 2018 graduate Molly Niepoky said. “She never gives up on anyone. Also, she makes the sport fun for everybody, no matter what the level.” Lauren Seiple, 2009 graduate and former player, agreed. “To this day I haven’t met a more encouraging and upbeat person than her. In the five years I played for her, her commitment to us was unwavering. Her love for the sport and the team was contagious — it kept us coming back year after year.” What keeps Coach Harder at HIES? What is it about the school that keeps her coming back? “Holy Innocents’ has always been about changes and growth,” she said. “This school is always looking to become a better place. It’s innovative — the faculty and staff are always working to be on board with each other; it’s a great place for a long career. Besides, it’s also never boring. “As for coaching, it’s not necessarily one kid or one team that stands out, I think the defining moment for me is when I see a player get it and they don’t need me anymore. They can just go off by themselves and work on what they’ve learned. I’ve also seen that with my own kids. Also, when I see a kid in this individual sport of tennis start dedicating herself to the team. Those things really stand out.” In her 31st year at HIES she knows changes are inevitable; people come and go. Still, as she sits at her desk, preparing for a meeting, there’s a gym bag nearby –— exercising time still is as important as desk skills. She will meet, she will lead, she will teach, but Cindy Harder will continue to do much more than that. She will keep moving forward in one activity or another — and as surely as the day turn to night — she remains a positive person and role model while doing so.

The Rev. Dr. Bill Murray
Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church’s New Rector
H
oly Innocents’ Episcopal Church’s new rector, The Rev. Dr. Bill Murray, is the eighth rector of HIEC, where he is recognized as a skilled preacher, teacher and writer. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Rev. Murray received his BA, magna cum laude, from The University of Memphis with majors in international economics and English literature. Following his undergraduate studies, he served as a full-time youth minister for five years at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. In working with youth, Rev. Murray decided he could “handle general insanity and snarky commentary on his work,” so he pursued ordination to the priesthood. He went to Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va., receiving his Master of Divinity degree with honors in 2006. He served as Rector at St. Elisabeth’s Episcopal Church in Bartlett, Tenn., and then worked in Dallas at Saint Michael and All Angels, one of the largest Episcopal churches in America, and helped minister to the needs of Saint Michael Episcopal School. Rev. Murray completed his Doctor of Ministry at Sewanee – The University of the South in May 2017. His thesis was focused on René Girard, non-sacrificial atonement theory and the Eucharist. (“Only ask me about it if you want a long and thoroughly dull conversation,” he said.) Rev. Murray and his wife, Jessie, have two sons, Moses (Mose) and Abraham (Abe). Ms. Murray teaches Spanish at Trinity School. Mose and Abe attend Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School.
On ‘Episcopal Identity’ Part of where we’re working right now between the Vestry and the Board of Trustees is to come up with a very clear definition of “Episcopal Identity.” There is such a variety of interpretations and understandings of the Episcopal Identity, which on one level is the heart of what it is to be an Episcopalian— Episcopal Identity is that there is a diversity of opinion. At the same time, we can say that there are core beliefs and values that we have drawn from scripture and tradition and reason. I think it’s fair to say, [our statement on Episcopal Identity] will basically be around the idea that we are Christians. We follow Jesus Christ who calls on us to love God and to love our neighbor. And through loving God and loving our neighbor, we changed the world. …the Episcopal Identity is to have a love of diversity and difference, which is true. But it’s because we understand God made the world and loves us and asks us to love each other. 18
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE
On the Church-School Relationship Paul Barton and I get along wonderfully and we both see the [church-school] relationship as strong and growing. From the Vestry to the Board to any of our leadership groups, everyone sees the church-school relationship as positive and as growing together and thriving. When we as the church look at the school, we see as the largest and most successful program that we’ve ever launched, because it is. It’s always going to be that program that we should rightfully be proud of and rightfully celebrate all the successes that come to the school. The school is no longer dependent on the church for the kinds of things that were needed a generation ago. But that’s not to say that there aren’t things that we won’t end up having conversations about. For instance, wanting to grow one program or another and to find new ways to solve problems that are done to some degree in partnership.
Hopes for HIES I would certainly hope that HIES will always provide every student a chance to grow into a fully wellrounded person and to have an ideas of faith and of culture and community and an understanding how gifted that this community is and how then that giftedness has a certain obligation to the larger society. And how do we then take our gifts and share them with people around us and grow not just Sandy Springs but Atlanta and the whole region. About What People Can Expect from HIEC Today Above all, I pray that we are a welcoming community. Anyone who wants to walk in the door will be welcomed for who they are and where they are in their journey and can be invited into a deeper relationship with God. That’s what we’re doing.
On the Past and Future of HIEC In three and a half years, we’ll be celebrating our 150th anniversary [at the church], and so a lot of what I’m doing right now is assessing, figuring out who we are, where we are, what we’re doing, but it’s also right now — I’m really trying to tell and understand the story of Holy Innocents’. It’s a lot harder to sort of talk about those stories over 150 years and how being started as an institution that reached out to children, who after the civil war didn’t have parents, is difficult. I mean, basically there were war refugees. I mean, that’s what we would call them. In today’s parlance, we can say we politely say orphans. The casualties of war was what we were founded to deal with. How does the church then understand what we’ve been doing for 150 years? And it’s a story of resilience and survival because HIEC was started in the midst of an aftermath of a major war. Then it transitioned to a parish church that then got blown down by a tornado, then HIEC moved and they bought another. When the interstate widened, the parishioners moved again. There’s a lot of persistence, resilience to the story. And so right now we’re trying to tell the story and understand the story of who Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church is 150 years later, as well as celebrate the gifts that we can bring to the community, share with the community and how we want to grow a church and school as a community. The school’s highest fundraising priority is the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Annual Fund. If you can make only one gift to the school, we hope you will make it to the Annual Fund. You will receive other requests for funding, and if you are able to support them, we hope you will. The Annual Fund covers more than the Bear necessities. The Annual Fund campaign raises dollars that support enhancements of our students’ daily educational experience. When pooled together, these funds provide income for academic programs, laboratory upgrades, retaining and recruiting outstanding faculty, as well as materials and equipment for athletics and fine arts programs. Tuition cannot cover everything the school wants to offer our students and faculty. In fact, tuition only covers 87 percent of the operation budget, and the rest is supported by the Annual Fund. The money the Annual Fund is expected to raise is included in the school’s budget for planning purposes. If we don’t raise it, we cannot conduct the school year as planned.

Dave Stockert Recognized as Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year Fostering support. Advancing mission. Raising money. Changing outcomes. Whatever you want to call it, David Stockert has done a lot of it at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. His mark on the school’s development as a premier independent school in Atlanta is evident. Look only to the STEM building’s impressive presence on campus. As Chair of the One School Campaign that raised a record-setting $24.5 million to build the STEM building, Dave did what he does best: lead, inspire and serve. For more than 14 years, Dave has served in leadership positions at HIES, as a board member, board chair, and committee member, as well as a parent and parent of alumni. The work mentioned above is certainly enough to deem Dave a truly extraordinary HIES ambassador and friend but amazingly there are dozens of other organizations across the country that could say the same about Dave. When Michele Duncan began the process of nominating Dave for the Association of Fundraising Professional’s National Philanthropy Day “Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year” Award, “it was a no-brainer”, she thought, and started filling out the paperwork. In making her way through the application, Duncan realized that Dave is involved in a lot of organizations and wondered if others may want to join in. By the time it was completed, the nomination came from eight separate organizations, chronicling decades of service and millions of dollars raised to benefit the community. With a genuine passion for education, children and youth development, Dave’s impact can be felt across broad swaths of the community, from the Metro YMCA, to Horizons, to the Westside Future Fund. Dave’s commitment to serving others and his natural ability to build relationships has powered his volunteer work, as it has his professional career. HIES proudly nominated Dave for this prestigious award and is incredibly grateful to have him, his wife Cammie, and children Olivia, Emily, and Joe as part of our HIES family. Well deserved, Dave!

Crimson & Gold allocates the funds to support a variety of athletic teams and programs, including the Bears in College Display and outdoor signage, new John Deere Gator for Athletic Department, chocolate milk all year for athletes, spirit signage for playoff teams, travel AED for the Sports Medicine Trainers, new leg jammer machine and air bike for weight room, improvements to South Campus concession area (warming oven), and much more.

The annual HIES Halloween Parade is a tradition that has brought joy to students and families for years. Seniors come in costume and pair up with Primary School students, also in costume, to walk through campus as other divisions look on with glee. HIES family and friends come enjoy the festivities, too. This year, parents of seniors could be heard reminiscing about the last time when they watched their children march in the parade—more than a decade ago when they called the Primary School home.

by Theresa Jespersen,
You know you have been at a school for a while when former students become colleagues. I have had that pleasure many times since Dylan Deal returned as a college graduate to teach in the Upper School. Teasingly, I asked him if he knew my first name. He did, but what he wanted to know was his former Government & Economics teacher’s carefully guarded personal info: my political 34

MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
affiliation. I told him he was not old enough. This year, for the first time, I have former students joining me at HI not as colleagues, but as parents. Caroline Catts-Xie, Glen Bowen, Kevin Woods and Kristin Wolford Tiliakos all have sixth graders entering the Middle School this year. I am not sure that I am old enough! Seeing them in their new roles makes me think of them as students, and of myself as a young parent. When I started teaching here, my little son, Alex (also a graduate in 2011), was just
three years old, and his brother, Andy (2015), had yet to be born. I announced his impending arrival late in that year. Most of my students in that ’95-96 year were seniors, and one class decided to give me a surprise. It turned out to be proof that some things never get old. I was right in the middle of a scintillating and exciting lesson about economic principles, when suddenly the classroom door opened and Edward England strode into the room. This was my first year at HIES, and I was not entirely used to
principals striding into the room. At my previous school, I am not certain that the principal ever set foot in my room, and yet here he was. Edward England crossed to my side and said he needed to talk to me out in the hallway. The students looked at one another; from her darkened office adjoining the room, Mrs. Bilbro looked up from her cup of tea and piles of essays; we went out into the hall. “What is it?” I asked. He look very serious. He looked up and down the hallway and leaned in. His voice was lowered so the students had to physically strain themselves to hear him. “There is an intruder on the campus. I don’t know who it is, but I need you to help me find him. I will go this way,” he said, jerking his head towards the gym and the soccer field. “You can go that way. Go all the way around and make sure we know who it is.” First year teachers agree to pretty much anything, and so I headed up the hall towards the front of the school, willing to help, but shaking my head. Why would he ask me? Surely there was someone else, someone more senior? I thought of Laura Bilbro and Pam Fedas, or Dave Heidel in the chemistry classroom across the hall, or Mr. Corbett up the hall in the physics room. Walking further, I passed the rooms of other colleagues who surely knew more about the community, who could better identify who was a stranger who did not belong. I walked by Ellen Blake’s class, Rick Torbett’s room, Upper School Chaplain Carolyn Barker’s office, and Robin Lynn Clemmons — they knew everyone. I worried that I would encounter this stranger and not know it, or that I would tag someone as an intruder who
was a trusted parent. As I burst through the doors in front of the school, I began to feel somewhat inadequate. Outside, there was no one. The only sounds were from a passing car on Mount Vernon Highway and the wind rustling through the trees in the parking lot islands. I looked around, saw nothing, heard nothing. Sighing with heartpounding relief and disappointment, I turned right to head back towards the soccer field, scanning the parking lot (where Groesbeck now stands), full of cars, devoid of people. I reached the end of the sidewalk and looked down into the soccer field. No one was there, and there was no one in front of the gym. Almost entirely deflated, and needing a saltine rather badly, I turned toward the door back into the 300 hallway. Knowing I would have to tell him a thousand things in just a few words, I smoothed my long ponytail, adjusted my teal-blue scrunchy, and strode back into the building. Mr. England was exiting the classroom. “I didn’t see anyone, sorry,” I said. “I am not really sure what I was looking for.” He looked at me sideways out of his glasses and grinned. “Yes, I know. Don’t worry about it,” he said and walked away. I turned to the door and walked back into the classroom, turning toward the students. They looked odd. I looked at them, and though they smiled a little, they were just a little more tense than I thought was right. Clark Hamilton looked like he was about to talk, or jump from his seat in the back, but he sat back and feigned relaxation. Brad Israel was looking straight ahead, and Peter Fotos was looking very intently at the floor. David Dixon had a funny smile. Laura McGehee (Sparks) and
Maggie Lunsford (Yepez) were quiet. Rob Bowers did not make eye contact. Monique Caracola (Biddle) looked at Missy Cavender and then smiled at me. She picked up her pen and asked a question about economics. Refocusing on my notes, I turned back to the whiteboard and continued on with our discussion, trying, as always, not to step on the juniors’ binders piled up in front. Things continued, questions were asked, and the class ended. About a week later, I came into the same room to encounter Monique and another student (Chris Lardner maybe, or Michael Kameron) in a strained discussion about something. It ended abruptly, but not before Monique pointed at him and told him, “Don’t you forget!” It was some time later that Edward England sought me out again and said he needed to talk to me. He asked me a few very innocuous questions about baby names. I was happy to talk with him, but I did have a class, and needed to get to the room. He laughed a little and advised me to linger a little longer. “Give them a minute,” he said. In a short while, I came into the room. There was pink and blue crepe paper strung between the light fixtures, a cardboard fold-out stork, and a beautifully decorated cake. There were gifts, and an enormous card they had all signed. It was my first-ever school baby shower and it was the most beautiful thing ever. I loved it, and they loved telling me how they all planned it, how they got Mr. England to get me out of the room so they could talk about it. They got a good laugh hearing my side of that story — it was a great day. Remembering that never gets old.

A THOUSAND WORDS
HIES FINANCIAL AID OPPORTUNITY After eight years of HIES’s participation, it still sounds too good to be true — Georgia allows you to redirect a portion of your tax payment to Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. This costs you nothing! It is a free, easy way to support the HIES financial aid program. Your taxes will give deserving students the opportunity to join the HIES community. This past year we had 58 scholarship recipients from this source of financial aid. These students met all of HIES’ Admissions requirements before being admitted and before being offered tax credit financial aid. Participating families must be able to fund a portion of their tuition as there is a cap of $9,817 on the amount of tax funds a student can receive each year. Remaining funds are kept in an endowment for future years’ use for approved students. The 2019 Georgia Tax Credit Scholarship Program began this past June and will end on Jan. 2, 2019 when all the pre-apply applications are downloaded into the Georgia Department of Revenue data base.
Holy Innocents’ is working to have a record year, especially since the Georgia Legislature raised the annual cap on the program to $100 million. Strong participation by partnerships, LLCs and S-Corps has led the way in giving. Support came from parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, corporations, partnerships and friends. If you have not yet pre-applied through our student scholarship organization called Apogee, consider going to www.apogee123.org and signing up for tax year 2019. Thank you to everyone who took advantage of this simple and convenient way to redirect your taxes in the past to support HIES financial aid. These Apogee tax credit funds free up other dollars for current financial aid students, faculty children, and new financial aid requests. Everyone wins! For more information, email Mary Chris Williams at marychris.williams@hies.org or parent volunteer chairman Neal Smith at ndsatl@aol.com.

2017-2018
Thank You!
During the holidays, I find myself thinking about all of the things for which I am thankful. Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School always comes to mind. This school has been my home for almost 15 years. It is also the place where my children were nurtured and thrived. We talk about this community and how supportive it is, and my family is living proof of that. When my son was sick during his Upper School years, the HIES community looked after him and made it possible for him to graduate in 2017. He is thriving in college in large part due to the support he received at HIES. This year my daughter graduated from Emory University. What a proud moment this was for me, having a child graduate from my alma mater 30 years after I did. Due to the education and preparation she received at HIES she was able to graduate on time and is now working in a job she loves. My third child is an athlete and earned a full athletic scholarship to play basketball in college. I give HIES much of the credit as they helped shape him into the athlete and student he is today. Three very different children who all are succeeding due to the education they received at HIES. I know many of you have had similar experiences at this amazing school. We are so fortunate to have dedicated teachers, staff and parents who work together to allow our students to try many different things and provide a safe environment in which to do it. I am grateful for all of the time, talent and treasure we receive from you. Whether your children are still at HIES or have graduated and are out in the workforce or raising a family or both, I thank you for making HIES a priority. We are so grateful to each of you. On the following pages you will see how many parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, friends, faculty and staff have participated in making HIES such a great school and a strong, vibrant community where so many of our students are able to thrive. With warm regards,
Michele Duncan

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The HIES Parents’ Association supports and enriches the school’s academic and community programs. The PA serves as a liaison to promote communication between parents and the school administration, faculty, and staff. The PA also facilitates Fundraising and Community Life committees that marshal the resources, talents and efforts of hundreds of parent volunteers to provide the “extras” that enrich the lives of HIES students and our community. In 2018, the Parents’ Association conducted several fundraising activities: the annual Tuition Raffle, sales of the Bear Benefits Card, Bingo Night, Bear WearHouse, Community Partner programs with the likes of Amazon, Publix, Kroger, and Mable’s Labels, and the fresh new “Golden Bear Gala”. Altogether, Parents’ Association fundraising activities during the 2017-18 school year yielded record revenues for the Parents’ Association and enabled the PA to donate more than $250,000 to the School, to the direct benefit of HIES students and families. A list of how these funds were allocated to various uses throughout the school can be found on page 44 of this Annual Report.
• Compelling Parent Education events with guest speakers and facilitators, funded by the Parents’ Association and generally offered free of charge to parents • HIES Around the World community culture celebration and potluck dinner, which celebrated its inaugural event in 2017 • Special speakers, meetings, and outings to promote cultural awareness and drive inclusivity throughout our HIES parent community, through the HI Cultural Awareness Partners program • 6th grade Cotillion class coordination • Prayer gathering for parents, held each month during the school year in Christ Chapel at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church • Support and service to HIES families in need through our Caring Bears program
GOLDEN BEAR GALA 2018 SPONSORS
The school’s annual Gala, a proud, longstanding tradition for HIES, was revamped and rebranded in 2018 as the Golden Bear Gala. The Golden Bear Gala chairs and their Gala organized a fabulous event and a huge fundraising success, producing record revenues for any HI gala, topping $400,000. As always, the success of the Gala was fueled by the generous support from the event’s sponsors: PLATINUM CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP PruittHealth, Mebane and Neil Pruitt Atlanta Orthodontic Specialists, Drs. Melisa Rathburn-Stewart and Michael Stewart GOLDEN BEAR BUDDIES SPONSORSHIP National Distributing Company, Nicole and Chris Carlos
In addition to fundraising, our Parents’ Association also supports and funds the following programs, and offers them free of charge to the HIES community: • Parent representatives for each grade and division • “Buddy” families who welcome new families to HIES • Monthly grade-newsletters, chock full of timely information about HIES happenings and opportunities for parents to volunteer and get involved • Parent updates and information sharing via Facebook and text alerts – and via Instagram beginning in Fall 2018 • Faculty and Staff appreciation events – including a festive Christmas Luncheon, “Teacher Treats” breakfast buffets, and an outdoor Spring Luncheon on the Alumni Hall Terrace

Tracy and Allan Merrill Founded in 2003, the Fine Arts Alliance (FAA) continues to grow through enthusiastic parent support. With committed volunteers, we are able to offer more ways than ever to support the arts garnering many accolades and awards for the HIES Fine Arts Department and its students. Since a strong Fine Arts program benefits all students, every parent is encouraged to become involved. The Fine Arts Alliance organizes parent volunteers to support chorus, band, orchestra, drama, visual arts and media literacy programs. Parent volunteers assist in many areas including receptions, concessions, box office sales, field trips and events such as Open Mic Night and Film Festivals. To keep Fine Arts awareness in the forefront, state of the art flat screen televisions are maintained throughout the divisions, looping up-to-date Fine Arts Events and awards. Additionally, Christmas decorations around campus, including all the trees, wreaths, and garlands, are designed and installed by the Alliance. Building upon the momentum of an outstanding year for the Fine Arts Department, the 2018-2019 school year will continue to add to these efforts. The Alliance continues to provide new resources to our students and teachers as the result of significant fund-raising efforts.

2017-2018
The Fine Arts Alliance raises additional funds in a variety of other ways. One of the larger resources is dues collected from Invest in Excellence. Other parent centered fund-raising activities includes the Alliance’s annual Wreath and Christmas décor sale. Because this project continues to have many requests, this year we are partnering with a new company to bring higher quality products and a wider selection to many repeat and new customers. Other fundraising efforts are more child centric and include concession and box office sales for four theatrical productions and a highly popular community-building movie night for the Primary School and Lower School students and their families. The funds raised by the Fine Arts Alliance last year contributed to the Fine Arts department in the following ways: • New sound system for the Fine Arts Building • Academic affiliation with the High Museum of Art • Keyboards • Apple TV for orchestra • Audio engineers and Sound mixing for all theatre productions • Visiting artists for art students • Scholarships for Orchestra and theatrical trips • Workshop for journalism students • Guest instructors for Band • 3 valve euphonium for Band • Sponsored the Performing Arts Banquet A key highlight in 2017-2018 was the sixth year of our Fine Arts Alliance partnership with the High Museum of Art, providing numerous opportunities to HIES students, faculty, and the parent community to attend events at the High and get involved in programs, some exclusive to our school. Active parents are needed to help maintain our strong Fine Arts programs. For more information on how you can become involved, visit our page on the school’s website under Campus Life/Parent Organizations or contact Sally Belenky, President of the Fine Arts Alliance.

HORIZONS ATLANTA Horizons Atlanta at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School believes that every child, regardless of background, should have the same chance at making a positive impact on his or her community. Our six-week academic enrichment program housed in the HIES Primary School and Upper School provides this opportunity to economically disadvantaged local public school students by eliminating critical barriers to success. Horizons students are challenged academically, socially, and physically through our Global Academy, a blend of project-based and service learning activities teaching each child how to be a productive global citizen. Horizons secures funding from local foundations, individuals, corporations, and community organizations. In May of 2018, Horizons at HIES participated in Horizons Giving Day, a national effort to raise funds and awareness of the program. We surpassed our site’s goal of $30,000, thanks to many individual donations from the HIES community. The funds raised contribute to our operations and programming including our highly qualified staff, transportation, meals, field trips, and supplies. The program would not be possible without the support of the Holy Innocents’ community. Horizons would like to thank all of our volunteers, donors, and advisory council members for their time, talents, and generous resources.
