As Ray Bradbury’s science fiction classic Fahrenheit 451 nears its conclusion, the protagonist Montag laments, “Everyone must leave something behind … A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched … and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there. It doesn’t matter what you do … so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away.” I thought about this poignant passage as I read through the Class Notes in this issue of our alumni magazine, seeing the accomplishments of our former students, now members of the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School alumni. I reflected upon Bradbury’s words as I edited and laid out the feature articles and photos that make up the Fall 2017 Torchbearer. This magazine is a slice-of-life report in which you will learn about alumni who are seeing their work published, pitching for a Major League Baseball team, getting married, having children, flying C-17s, starting businesses and generally making the world a better place. They are all building their legacies. They are all leaving something behind. Charisse Bowen ’96 is taking the business world by storm as she works with startups from around the globe in just about every industry imaginable. She recently had the opportunity to leave us all something as her TED Talk about her business passions will be archived and watched by millions of future entrepreneurial leaders from this point forward. In building a legacy that will help an untold number of people, Spears Mallis ’97 is going above and beyond to eradicate Type 1 diabetes through his
tireless work with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and its annual “Rock the Cure” fundraising gala. He has quite literally made a name for himself with the “Spears Mallis Rock Star of Hope Award.” Every day at CNN, Laurie Segall ’04 is standing at the forefront of technology and innovation and rubbing shoulders with this millennium’s pioneers. She is meeting the people who are changing something from the way it was before they touched it. Whether it’s sitting down with the founders of Uber and Twitter, or covering some other transformative technology or software, Ms. Segall is reporting and explaining why these people and this transformational technology are so important to all of us. You will find all their stories here in this issue of Torchbearer. And for every Class Note, feature article, award announcement or accolade printed in these pages, there are hundreds of other stories about what our graduates are doing to build upon their legacies. We want to share those accomplishments and celebrate with you as members of the HIES Community. Please reach out to your class representative or contact me directly with any news or leads for potential stories. Bradbury concludes his famous passage about leaving one’s mark by saying, “The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is … [t]he lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.” You are the HIES alumni. You are the real gardeners. You are tilling the soil, planting the seeds and leaving something behind for all of us. When we look at the trees or the flowers you planted, you’re there.

A Man of Many Hats
Class of 2017 co-valedictorian and Stanford University freshman Sean Hackett captured the HIES spirit and what it means to “discover everything, except your limits” in an address he delivered to the faculty and staff in August. We are proud to reprint his remarks below. “Wait. He’s not a teacher!” So a lot of you are probably wondering why I’m here. I’m not here to teach you anything. Instead, I’m going to tell you about something you already know: Each and every one of you has an enormous impact on the kids who go to this school. It’s true. Now as much as I would like to be a representative of the student body, I can only speak from my experience. So instead of speaking on behalf of everyone, I will prove what I mean using my journey at Holy Innocents’. You guys ready? I came to HI in the 3-year-olds class in the Primary School. Now, it’s really hard for me to imagine myself that young again, but what I can remember is a strong will to create and explore. [BOOK BAG] We all got these book bags for us to carry our checked out books in. Getting to choose any book I wanted in the library exposed me to all kinds of subjects early on.
[PULL-OUT BOOK] I particularly loved books about inventors, which the librarians would encourage me to check out all the time, even though they were meant for the older kids. I also remember new subjects being introduced to me all the time by my teachers. My Pre-K teacher, Mrs. Rudy, used her personal knowledge to teach us all about Chinese culture! Mrs. Staples taught us all about American history! Mrs. Tucker taught us how to play musical instruments from scratch! You never know what will stick when new things
are shown to young kids who want to discover, especially if they like inventors like me. After Primary School comes the Lower School. This was around the first time I really experienced challenges and goals. Especially when that goal is taking time off from class to pie the principal. And how could we reach that goal? We had to reach a book-reading quota set by the principal. [ROALD DAHL GOING SOLO] And because of this, I was incentivized to read tons of books, specifically by Roald Dahl, and especially his autobiography called Going Solo, which describes his days in the Royal Air Force. I thought flying was the coolest thing ever, but soon I faced another challenge: the dreaded Wax Museum project, where we had to dress up as a prominent historical figure, make a presentation, and recite facts on demand. [PILOT HAT] So remembering my days in the Primary School, I bought a pilot’s cap, and I became Orville Wright. Yes, this is the same hat. In fact, just last Spring Break, I brought my fanboying to a whole new level when I embarrassed myself at the National Air and Space Museum and wore this exact hat in front of the original Wright Brothers glider. None of that would have happened without some teacher somewhere coming up with the Wax Museum idea. Now, if you had to make me choose my favorite class in Lower School, I think my answer was the same as anyone else’s in my class: Science Lab with Mr. Bobby Fay. Continued >>>

[GOGGLES] Yes. Kids loved Mr. Fay. You might find this hard to believe, but some kids would even want to go to Science Lab over recess! Recess! There is nothing more serious to a kid than having fun, but if fun is what you were looking for, you would go to Mr. Fay’s Science Lab. He would pass electricity through pickles and make them glow. He would make fire appear from thin air. Forget Bill Nye, forget Carl Sagan, this man was a real science showman. This man had a childlike glow about his teaching. This man made every lesson in science an enthralling spectacle. This is the man who made me interested in science. Pretty soon, I found myself in the Middle School. I don’t mean to start this one off on a sour note, but I don’t know anybody who is proud of their Middle School years. These young teenage years can be tough. I, like many others, was just beginning to figure out who I was. [RED HAT] And this is the reason I have so many hats. A prominent one I wore was this red snow hat when it was cold outside. I now call it my “Holden Hat”, after that angsty kid from Catcher in the Rye.
[SCIENCE OLYMPIAD JACKET] So when I learned about Science Olympiad in the Middle School, led by Mr. Jackson, Mrs. Silvera, Mrs. Sandler, Mrs. Burke, Mr. McGowan, literally ALL of the science teachers in the middle school, I knew I found my happy place. Where else could a sixth grader come to be friends with and be respected by the eighth graders? You could tell the teachers put in a ton of effort, often at their own expense. Mr. Jackson’s bloodshot eyes became a permanent feature with his late nights making lesson plans. Mrs. Silvera’s frazzledness came from having so many papers she didn’t grade when she was helping us get ready

for competition. Best of all, the students on the team were always treated as equals to everyone else. The simple act of creating a place where this can happen can make a real, noticeable difference in a preteen’s life. Getting to feel like an adult is something that every middle schooler craves. So whenever students could get that sense of free expression and independence, we as students felt extremely validated. [BACKWARD BERET] One of the best examples I can think of is the Middle School Film Festival, run by Mr. Gale and Mr. Klingman. There was no handholding. It was “go make a movie that’s two minutes long,” and that was all the instruction we got. And if you were determined enough to make a movie, it was shown on the big screen in the FAB during school hours, preceded by a video starring all the Middle School teachers. When you are put on the same screen as your teachers, you truly feel like … an individual. And that is extremely powerful. However, one does not truly come into their own until, you guessed it, high school. Ahh. … Upper School. I know you look at us Upper School kids and say, “Man, do those youngsters have it together!?!” Well, I hate to break it to you, but … WE DON’T. Especially as freshmen. But you know what made it easier? Whether it’s the ruthless biting wit of a Coach Ceferatti, the flamboyance and quirkiness of the thespian Mrs. Karres-Williams, or the subdued curiosity of Mr. Taylor, every kid had a teacher they could relate to on a personal level. [SONIC HAT] As for me, I found Mr. Yarsawich. He was every shy kid’s best friend. Running a board game club every Friday, and a global discussion club during Tuesday lunches, Mr. Yarsawich was the kind of person who would lift you up into his world and teach you there; for instance, any of those times he taught you a world history concept with a board game he invented. These kinds of people make you want to have conversations until 5 p.m., have debates over Bearsmail, and read books outside of class.
They make you want to be smarter, be more interesting, and have more fun. What more can you ask from an education? What more can you ask from a friend? A mentor? Every club, every class, every team has the potential to make a difference in a student’s life in some of their most formative years. Having so many teachers lend an ear, encourage me, and, most of all, give me opportunities to be myself have allowed me to do many things I can be proud of at Holy Innocents’. Whether it’s creating a Khan Academy video, an economics rap song, a film festival movie, a TED talk, a talent show performance, a robot, a bomb defusal game, a speech, or even … [MODEL UN COAT AND MILITARY BERET] ... a cult of personality, there was always a teacher behind it who inspired me or gave me an opportunity. And anybody can be there to help a student on their journey. A college counselor who is willing to gossip, a custodian who is willing to stop for a chat, a cafeteria worker who loves giving high-fives, a headmaster who knows everyone’s name, a chaplain who has chats about theology, a receptionist who says good morning, it all culminates into a community that gives every kid a chance to be valued. I know that sounds like something Mr. Barton might want me to say, but it’s true. Every item I brought was inspired by an individual at this school. Notice how they all define me too. This is the impact you all have. You can all create people like me. You created me. I hope you’re happy.
Let the photography commence.

Spears Mallis, Rock Star of Hope
The 12th Annual Rock the Cure: Saturday, June 9, 2018
Keep on
ROCKING
Spears Mallis ’97 was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes while a senior at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. At the time, he did the two major events regarding JDRF—The Walk and the Gala. “They were and still are great events,” Spears said. “Still, while doing the walk most of the people were older – I didn’t really relate to them or their young kids. It was the same with the Gala – it’s a great, high-dollar event, but most of the people were older. I got the idea to try to get something going with young adults.” Never one to just sit on an idea, the UGA grad soon pitched something to the JDRF—an annual Rock the Cure event which would support the cause. “They listened to my pitch, and basically their attitude was, ‘This is a great idea, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t last for more than a year or two.’” Eleven years and events later, Spears and his team have proven that very wrong. The first Rock the Cure – held in June of 2007 – saw 218 people walk through the door, and more than $15,000 was raised. This past June, 760 came in, and more than $127,000 was raised. “So far we’ve raised more than $900,000 for the cause,” Spears summarized. “Next year – our 12th – is going to be even more special as we’re going to go over the million-dollar mark.”
Rock the Cure goes like this: It’s held every year at Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta on the second Saturday after Memorial Day. It consists of live music, food and beverages, both indoor and outdoor. “It has now also morphed into where we now have VIP suites available,” Spears added. “It’s been a great thing. I figured long ago that we, as recent college grads, would go out and spend thirty or forty or fifty bucks. Why not capitalize on that but use it for a good cause?” Looking at it all, Spears’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Two years ago, during the 10th annual event, the JDRF presented an award to celebrate an individual who has made and continues to make a significant impact on young adults with Type 1 diabetes. At the time, the award was called the Rock Star of Hope award. Not only was Spears the first recipient, but moving forward, the board has renamed the award The Spears Mallis Rock Star of Hope award. “It’s an honor, but I have to say I couldn’t do it or couldn’t have done it without the support of what used to be known as the Junior Board,” he said. “Now it’s called the Young Leadership Committee. Every year they come in with fresh Continued >>>

“Once you are diagnosed, this is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year thing.” ideas, good inspiration and energy, and it couldn’t be done without them.” One of Spears’ right-hand people during these years, JDRF employee and a catalyst each year for Rock the Cure, Jessi Arthur, had this to say regarding Spears. “Because of him, what began with a few hundred people now draws close to a thousand,” she said. “He is an inspiration to all that know him and is relentless in his efforts to fund a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Both Rock the Cure and JDRF are forever better because of his involvement and passion.” What made and still makes Spears so driven? A part of his testimony will perhaps clear that up. “First, when I got diagnosed as a senior in high school, that’s usually the time of your life when you think you’re invincible. Things have changed in the last 20 years, but that’s a later time in life to be diagnosed. “Once you are diagnosed, this is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week, 365-daya-year thing. You must always be thinking about diabetes or else you’ll get yourself in trouble. You must plan your next activity, what you’re going to eat, and, if you’re going somewhere, will you have access to being able to get your blood sugar back up? Again, doing the Gala and the Walk was fine, but I wanted people my own age to share their experiences and ideas of what all they were and are going through.” Spears attended HIES as a 3-yearold all the way through graduation. He still remembers the warmth and positive 12

influences the school had and still has on him. “I look back with nothing but good thoughts when I think of HI,” he said. “It’s simply a great, close-knit community, and I’m glad I was there.” At UGA, he double-majored in finance and management information systems. He now works at Genentech – a biotechnology company based out of San Francisco, though he works out of his home. His family has a lot of history at HIES— his dad, Judge Robert Mallis, once was the HIES chairman of the Board. He and then Headmaster Alice Malcolm were instrumental in acquiring the land that now holds the high school. His mom, Ginger, was Ms. Malcolm’s administrative assistant and the school receptionist, and his brothers also spent time at HIES. Hampton attended through seventh grade and David was at HIES through eighth. Upper School English teacher Niki Simpson said she wasn’t surprised when she heard of Spears’s recent successes. “I remember him as being a quiet leader,” she said. “Whenever there was some type of situation that needed someone to step up, Spears never had a problem taking the bull by the horns.” Fortunately, Spears still carries that “bullby-the-horns” attitude at both Genentech and in his work for the JDRF. It’s safe to say that the JDRF – almost a million dollars later – is more than appreciative of that approach.

Getting Technical
If you happen to see an investigative technology piece on CNN, there’s a good chance that Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s Laurie Segall ’04 was behind it. Whether as a writer, as a producer, on camera, or all the above, our former Golden Bear continues to do it all in the reporting field. Laurie currently is a senior technology correspondent for CNN and editor-at-large for CNN Tech—covering the intersection of technology and culture. With her work on the air, both in the states as well as internationally, Segall’s success hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was named to Forbes “30 Under 30” five years ago for her reports on the tech and media scene online for CNNMoney and CNN.com, as well as CNN television. Getting her start in tech coverage in 2009, Segall specializes in investigative reports showing the impact of technology on our daily lives, building on her longstanding focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Her work appears across all CNN platforms. Recently, she was the host of CNN’s first CNNgo original, “Mostly Human with Laurie Segall,” which is a six-part investigative docuseries, exploring sex, love, death and humanity through the lens of technology. It has aired around the world and has received great reviews. “So far we’re getting good feedback on it,” she modestly said. “People say it’s like the movie Black Mirror.” Laurie is the executive producer and the oncamera talent for the show. Some of her many topics included: What happens to your social media after death, the death of Ebola, Michael Lewis on Trump and Obama, reports on hackers, and a dating app where women message first.
She has also done award-winning investigative pieces ranging from emerging forms of online harassment, an intimate look at the hacker community, and drug use in Silicon Valley. Her reports showcase a unique multiplatform delivery of stories with digital episodes available to binge-watch online, which are frequently adapted as CNN and HLN for television special reports. While interviewing “disruptive” tech companies and bringing their stories to light, she has spoken with Bill Gates, the founders of Twitter, Facebook, Uber and Instagram and many other big names in big companies while on the job. In summarizing her success so far, Laurie hasn’t forgotten her Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School roots and all they continue to mean in her life. “I wouldn’t be here now if it weren’t for my experiences at Holy Innocents’,” she summarized. “I remember Mrs. [Carla] Klepper putting me in charge of the newspaper, which played a big part in helping me realize that I wanted to be a journalist. She and people like her continue to be a big influence on my life to this day.” After graduating from HIES, Laurie earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan before beginning her CNN days two years later. Besides her “30 Under 30,” she was also named one of the “Seven Top Journalists to Subscribe to on Facebook.” She speaks regularly at industry conferences, including Internet Week New York and SXSW, where she regularly leads CNN’s technology coverage.

Alumni News Worth Spreading Charisse Bowen ’96 Making the World a Better Place Through Business
Charisse Bowen ’96 delivers her TED Talk, ‘So You Say You Want a Revolution,’ at TEDx Tortola (BVI).
Charisse Bowen ’96 is the director of entrepreneurial development and director of strategic initiative at Forge International, a new entrepreneurial training center
and co-working community located in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. In her business roles, she has visited over 300 startup companies around the world, with her unwavering philosophy being to make the world a better place through business. This past June, she gave a TED Talk entitled “So You Say You Want a Revolution.” “I was very honored to be invited to give my TED Talk,” Charisse said. “It is a real gift to be able to share with people ideas that you are really passionate about. I do a lot of talks, but this one had me quite nervous. The TED format is pretty strict, and I couldn’t use any notes. On top of that, knowing that this talk would be seen long after I’m gone all made me much more apprehensive about making it the best it could be. “I had great feedback afterward. I seemed to light a fire under people, which was one of my goals. Because of this I feel it was mission accomplished. I hope this talk leads to more opportunities to speak to groups of people to inspire them to be revolutionaries in their own lives.” Looking back, after graduating from HIES and later the College of Charleston, Charisse began her career working in the entertainment industry as a television and commercial 16

producer for Warner Brothers in Los Angeles. She had a hand in producing plenty—mostly pilots and reality shows. In 2006, her love for good content and desire to do good resulted in her company, GenGreen. Charisse led the environmentally-focused SAS Company to become the largest distributor of eco-content in North America and was responsible for creating the very first eco-app in the iTunes store (‘FindGreen’). “Our mission was to teach people how to live a more environmentally-friendly life,” she said. In 2011, she sold the company and was invited to build and lead the Institute for Entrepreneurship at Colorado State University. This new calling became a positive shift that set her on the course of teaching business and cultivating communities. As a self-proclaimed entrepreneurial activist, teaching and supporting startup entrepreneurs as they achieve their goals is her life mission. In her roles at CSU, and later Galvanize and then Blue Ocean Enterprises, Charisse has worked with startups from around the world and in just about every industry in speaking her philosophy. She now has a role at Forge, where she is focused on bringing transformative change and guidance to the gifted entrepreneurs of the BVI.
The Communications Department had a casual, tongue-in-cheek conversation with Charisse recently. Here are her thoughts on various things. Continued >>>
Charisse Bowen ’96: In Her Own Words What I’m doing now lets me combine my two passions—business and teaching. I can’t say I stumbled into it, but that’s where my path has led me.
I’m always on a plane—I was on one two days ago.
Usually I spend 10 days per month in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), though I spent all of July there. Flying is part of my life.
When I think back on my Holy Innocents’ days, it’s Mr. Edward England who always makes me laugh. He
was our principal. I had a special connection with him. I was always trying to bend the rules; push the envelope, and I think he had a special place in his heart for that. He was one of my biggest supporters.
People often don’t understand what I do for a living. They don’t understand the idea around ‘business incubation and acceleration’ because it’s relatively new. They also don’t understand why I’m in the BVI—they think I’m always on vacation. They always ask me, “How’d you get that gig?”
If I could time travel, that’s an easy one. I’d travel into the future. That’s where my mind always is anyway! The one major thing Holy Innocents’ gave me that helped me in college was confidence. It was such a kick to see my ideas listened to, accepted, and then implemented. This is what helped me start the television program at the College of Charleston that exists to this very day. The last concert I went to was Brandi Carlisle. She played at Red Rocks out here in Denver. Good show! If I could change anything, it would be people’s lack of acceptance of other people and their opinions. I’d like for people to be more open-minded and to hear different things with an open heart. In my fantasy world, I would win an award called “The Impact Award,” and I would get it for changing
people’s lives in a positive way. As for who would present it to me, I’d want somebody powerful – a game changer – like a Desmond Tutu or somebody.

From Crimson to Garnet to Cardinal Voyles Drafted by St. Louis
His heart was sinking. After all, 37 rounds had already passed in the 2017 professional baseball draft and his phone still hadn’t rung. At the time, he—a pitcher for Florida State University— had the College World Series to look forward to— but what next? “I had already accepted the possibility that I wasn’t going to get drafted at all,” Jim Voyles ’13 remembered. Fortunately, it happened. A ringing phone had never sounded so good, and the former Golden Bear eagerly answered it. “There were only two rounds left, and I finally got my call,” he added. “When it did come, it was such a relief! It made me feel truly blessed. “I’m very proud to get to continue my baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals, and I’m proud to have been a Golden Bear.” The Cardinals drafted him in the 38th round in mid-June—he was the No. 1144 overall pick. He then finished the 2017 campaign as an FSU relief pitcher – his twin brother Ed, is also a pitcher for the Seminole staff – and now it’s on to the professional world where his baseball life will continue. Jim was a consistent workhorse in the Seminole pen during his tenure – his final year he posted a 4.46 ERA for the ACC champs, and had a 4-0 won-loss record while throwing 36 innings. He was particularly strong in his sophomore and junior seasons – as a sophomore his ERA was 2.63; it was 3.16 as a junior. He made five appearances as a freshman and had a 1-0 mark. Last year, he was placed on the watch list for the 2016 National Pitcher of the Year Award – only one of 72 pitchers nationally to be named. This was shortly after going 5-0 in April as a junior, posting a 1.02 ERA and striking out 38. While at HIES, Jim and brother Ed Voyles ’12 helped lead the Golden Bears baseball team to four postseason appearances. Jim was named the 2013 Rawlings All-Southeast First Team, as well as Perfect Game’s Underclassman All-American team and All-Region honorable mention honors in 2011 and 2012. “Knowing you had Jim as a pitcher on your team was always a great feeling,” high school teammate, Sam Jokerst ’13, who went on to play college ball at Maryville, said. “He has always had a strong arsenal of pitches that were nearly impossible to hit. I’m so excited for him to have this opportunity, and I know he will excel as he continues his baseball days.” Golden Bear teammate and former East Tennessee State University pitcher Will Small put it this way: “Ed, Jim and I have been best friends since we started playing basketball together at NYO when we were 7 years old,” he said. “We started playing baseball together when we were 13 and went on all the way through NYO, travel ball and Holy Innocents’. With that said, I’ve watched Jim close as he grew into a player, battled injuries, and took the next step as we moved up to successful college baseball careers. It’s great to see one of my best friends now having a chance to play at the highest level.” While at HIES, alum Jim and Ed were also starters on the varsity basketball team which consistently earned postseason bids. Both were among the top of the stat charts in points and rebounds. “I couldn’t have done all this without my experience at HIES,” Jim said. “I’d like to thank all the coaches there who have helped me along the way; all this wouldn’t be possible without them.” Jim is the third HIES alum to be drafted into the pros – Ben Cornwell ’07 spent some time in the Seattle Mariners’ organization while Skye Bolt ’12 is currently in the Oakland A’s system. Swann’s Debut Novel Sweeping Country with Rave Reviews People often talk about living the dream. In the case of HIES Upper School English Chair Chris Swann, he is currently living two of them. “My first dream is my teaching career here at Holy Innocents’,” he said. “My second one is having my novel published.” Dr. Swann was referring to his debut novel, Shadow of the Lions, which is drawing national acclaim since it was released Aug. 1st. Now beginning his 22nd year teaching, he spoke at a launch party here at school the day the book came out. “I’ve wanted to write a novel since I was in eighth grade. I knew it would be hard to make a living doing just that, so I studied what other authors did while they wrote. What I discovered was that many of them were teachers or professors,

so I decided – hmm, that’s what I’ll do! That was the depth of my thinking back then,” he said with a laugh. The reviews have been no laughing matter. They’ve been nothing short of amazing. Spanning from the Atlanta JournalConstitution to the Wall Street Journal, from authors such as David Liss and Ed Tarkington and from Foreword Reviews and many more – all have praised Swann’s twisty tale that takes place at a boarding school in Virginia. Dr. Swann is no stranger to boarding school life – he attended one in Virginia before getting his Ph.D. in creative writing at Georgia State. He has won awards and recognition for his prose from the likes of GSU, Washington & Lee University, and the Heekin Group Foundation’s Tara Fellowship for Short Fiction.
“When I was struggling earlier on what to write about, my wife – Kathy – told me just to write what I know about. She told me to write the first chapter and have someone die. I told her, no, he doesn’t die, he vanishes. And with that I went into our study and wrote the prologue.” The rest of the story, you’ll have to read for yourself. And you won’t regret it. Torchbearer caught up with Dr. Swann before school began in early August. 1) Why this story? Why did you feel so drawn to this place and the characters in order to make such a commitment to them in this work? I went to a boarding school in Virginia, Woodberry Forest, and my time there was really formative. I’m who I am as an adult, in large part, due to my experiences at Woodberry. When I finally decided to write about something I knew about, I was drawn to having a boarding school be the setting. I plundered my own past for names, places, even scenes, although I invented the main story completely. Matthias Glass, the narrator and main character of Shadow of the Lions, is sort of like me, but he’s more selfish and unwise—at least I hope so! I enjoyed putting him in situations where he would make mistakes and see what he would do next. And I’ve always been interested in friendships and the power they have over us, and the power they give us, so I found Matthias and Fritz’s friendship very compelling. 2) You are a busy man. How did you find time to complete this novel? Nora Roberts, who has written over 200 novels, says she has one overarching rule for herself: butt in the chair. You make the time to write. For me, it’s what my wife refers to as “sacred writing time.” When our kids go to bed around 7:30 or 8 p.m., I sit in the chair at my laptop for a couple of hours. 3) What did you draw from your HIES experience as you worked? I thought a lot about my time in the classroom here, especially as a younger teacher, and what that felt like. That helped me to put Matthias in the role of a relatively new teacher. There are a lot of Easter eggs in the novel for anyone who went to Woodberry Forest, especially in my class, but there are a few Easter eggs for HIES folks, too. 4) Do you believe in writer’s block? I’ve never felt writer’s block in the sense that I was unable to write anything down, or that I had no idea what to write about. My problem can be getting started. I’ll have an hour to write, and I’ll find myself rearranging the spice drawer in the kitchen instead.
5) You’ve always been a writer, but now you’re a published author. How will this help you in the classroom with your students? I’m hoping that my success at getting published after so many years of working at it will serve as an example of persistence. I’m not a literary genius; I just didn’t quit. Also, when I got the copy edits back for my novel—the part where they edit every single page and line for grammatical or mechanical mistakes and stylistic changes—I received two pages that were completely free of any marks, and four hundred and eight pages with edits all over them. I shared a page or two of them on the SMART Board with my students, who found it highly amusing. So now I might have a little bit more empathy for them when they get papers back with my comments all over them! 6) Best advice for an aspiring author? See Nora Roberts’s advice, above. 7) Of course the reader will decide, but what do you hope he or she comes away with after reading Shadow of the Lions? Mainly I hope they enjoy the experience of reading the story. I think a lot of novelists come to writing novels because they remember the sheer wonder and joy they felt when they discovered a new story, and they want to be a part of that, to create that same feeling in another reader. I hope readers enjoy my story and feel it is true, that the characters seem like real people reacting to difficult situations. 8) How has the HIES community supported you in this journey? I cannot express how grateful I am to the entire HIES community. At a basic level, my salary and work schedule provided me the wherewithal and the time to be able to write in the evenings and in the summers. Beyond that, I don’t recall a single instance of anyone in our community—student, faculty or staff member, parent—ever expressing anything other than support and good wishes when they learned that I write fiction. At every step—when I learned that I had gotten a literary agent, when I got a publisher, when I got a publication date—HIES friends were among the first to congratulate me. And when my novel was published on August 1, HIES threw a party for me. That night is one of the all-time highs in my life. 9) What’s next? Butt back in the chair for novel #2. And getting ready to get back to my day job. TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | FALL 2017

Alumni Athletic Notes by Dunn Neugebauer, Sports Information Director
Mollie Belisle ’17 – the all-time leading goal scorer in soccer at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School – has wasted no time fitting in on the field at Georgia. Scoring a goal in her opening game, Belisle netted four in an outing in September, tying the UGA school record. Our small school has two battling it out on the football fields in the SEC. When Kentucky faced South Carolina in September, former Golden Bear teammates Ben Asbury ’14 and Luke Wright ’14 had a great reunion. Asbury is the long snapper at South Carolina while Wright is one of the Wildcat quarterbacks. Back to UGA, Chelsea Zoller ’16 is recovering from a broken foot and is expected to be competitive again in the 400-meter hurdles for the Dawgs. Zoller won four state track crowns while at HIES – three in the 400-meter run and one in the 300-meter hurdles. Ileana Zeissner ’16 is still running strong – now at Emory University. Zeissner is competing on both the cross country and track teams for Coach John Curtain after a more than stellar career here at HIES. She is currently a sophomore.
Ben Asbury ’14 and Luke Wright ’14
And rah, rah for Kendall Jabaley ’17! Jabaley – who graduated last May – is now a cheerleader at Georgia Tech where she cheers for home football games and for the volleyball team. Jabaley is the second HIES alum to cheer in college – new Wall of Fame member Whitney Pfohl ’12 cheered at Georgia. Ben Davies ’17 – after garnering not one, but two state track championships this past May – is still running strong at Boston College on both the cross country and track teams. Ben left HIES after practically rewriting the record books in both sports. Rod Davis ’15 is following in brother Lee’s shoes at North Carolina State. After taking a state championship and placing every year here for the Golden Bears, Davis is currently battling it out on the Mats for State. Connor Thompson ’14 is getting it done on the tennis courts at UNCGreensboro. After going 62-1 lifetime here at HIES, the current junior is now playing #1 singles in the Division I ranks. Thompson was named Player of the Year recently and is consistently picking up wins over top players across the country. Sydney Long ’16, who played basketball last year at Furman University, is now at Oglethorpe University on the hoops’ squad, where she is ready to unveil her three-point shooting abilities. Long was a four-year varsity member here at HIES.

There are plenty of former Golden Bears gracing the collegiate athletic fields; these are briefs on what has been reported. If you’d like to be considered for future issues of Torchbearer, please email dunn.neugebauer@hies.org.
Wall of Fame Five of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s all-time best athletes/coaches were inducted into the Wall of Fame during halftime of the HIES-Mt. Vernon football game. The Wall of Fame was established in 2008; it recognizes and honors outstanding varsity athletes, coaches, and/or contributors who have demonstrated excellence in their athletic pursuits. At the ceremony, each received a commemorative plaque - a replica of the one displayed on the Wall of Fame in the Main Gym - as well as a “free ticket for life” to any HIES sporting event. Peter Allen (Class of 2010 – Football)
Throughout his career at Holy Innocents’, Peter was known for his physical play on both sides of the football. He was a 3-year starter at safety, but was also frequently used as a running back where he made an impact. He was 1st team All-Region both his junior and senior years. As a senior, Peter was also named 1st team All-State. His play in 2009 was a major factor in HIES winning the region championship and making it to the state playoff quarterfinals. He is currently the career leader in tackles and interceptions. Peter played one year of college football at Hampton-Sydney College. Currently, he serves in the Air Force where he is an Airman First Class Crew Chief on F-16s, stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, awaiting his deployment to Afghanistan in 2018.
Lee Davis (Class of 2012 – Wrestling)
Lee Davis is one of the top wrestlers in Holy Innocents’ history – he was a four-year veteran with a career record of 138 wins and 22 losses, good for second all time. A three-year team captain, he won one state title and placed in state his other three years. He was also a football star at HI – he is currently 8th in career rushing, 10th in career tackles and was named All-State and All-Region in 2011. After graduation, he played football for a year at Mercer before transferring to North Carolina State, where he wrestled for four years. He earned Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman and Most Outstanding Wrestler his senior year. He lives in Raleigh, NC and works at Johnston County Emergency Medical Services and with Wrestling Mindset. He continues to wrestle and train at the Olympic Regional Training Center, aspiring to make a senior level World and Olympic team.
Whitney Pfohl (Class of 2012 – Cheerleading)
Whitney Pfohl was in our cheer program from 2008- 20012 and was one of the captains for the JV football squad in 2009. She was named All American in the summer of 2011 at UCA cheer camp, while also qualifying for regionals as well. As a competitive cheerleader in high school, she cheered level 5 for the Stingrays Smoke Competition squad. She also earned gymnastics success at level 8, 9 and 10, consistently earning bids in postseason. After graduation, Ms. Pfohl cheered at UGA and cheered for football, both basketball teams, gymnastics and volleyball. Ms. Pfohl is now at Georgia State University pursuing her masters’ degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and is interning at Hirsch Academy as a counselor for autistic children. She continues to teach both cheer and gymnastics at The Peach Pit as a part time instructor.
Anne Yanda (Class of 2012 – Volleyball)
Anne Yanda played volleyball all four years and was captain her last three. She was MVP in 10th, 11th and 12th grades and was on the all state and all area teams in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She remains on the all-time stat board in assists and kills. She was on the Dean’s list all 4 years of HS; and was on Homecoming court her senior year as well as being voted most likely to “Be in the Olympics” in a senior superlative. She went on to play volleyball at Iowa before transferring to Vanderbilt, where she graduated in 2016 with a nursing degree. She currently resides in Nashville, where she is in her second year earning her nurse degree – specializing in adult acute care - to be completed in August of 2018.
Dylan Deal (Class of 1997 – Baseball, Coach 2006-2012)
Dylan Deal played on the varsity baseball team all four years and was captain his last three. He remains among the top of the stat leaders as far as homers, RBI and average. After graduation, he continued his baseball career at Davidson College in North Carolina, where he saw plenty of action on the diamond. After graduation, he returned to HIES a as Faculty member where he coached JV baseball & then took over the Varsity team. As head varsity baseball coach from ’06-’12, he coached a team to the school’s first and only state championship in the spring of 2007. He is currently the winningest coach in HIES history (153-61). He was also the head softball coach for a season. While on the faculty at HIES, Mr. Deal also spent time as the Senior Dean and taught in the religion department. Currently, he is the Upper School Director at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, Pa. TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | FALL 2017

FROM THE
OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT There are numerous ways in which our donors support the mission of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. The generosity of our donors makes a difference in the lives of each student, teacher, director and coach at HIES. Please consider the following funds, and the many other opportunities available, when you seek to support our school.
The Greenbaum Family Fund
In 2000, the Greenbaum Family Fund was established by Carol and Tom Greenbaum to promote teaching excellence. The fund provides teachers with resources to undertake special enrichment activities. Faculty members are encouraged to use the grant to pursue academic experiences or fieldwork, develop a specific classroom project, or do independent research. The intention is to encourage teachers to engage in activities beyond what might otherwise be covered by the school’s professional development budget. Faculty members are urged to seek creative ways to enhance their growth. Examples of how past recipients have used the award include the study of Basque art and culture through travel to France and Spain, participation in an Orca Whale Survey project in Puget Sound, a study of classical composers through a travel expedition to Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, participation in a leadership studies program offered by a Teachers College academy, and a study of history and the D-Day experience through travel to Normandy and London. To find out more information about establishing a fund at HIES, please contact Michele Duncan, director of institutional advancement, at michele.duncan@hies.org or (404) 847-1153.
Orca Whale Survey project in Puget Sound
The Blessings Fund In 2010, the Blessings Fund was established for people who work at HIES who are facing a short-term family crisis, or extraordinary circumstances, and would benefit from financial assistance. Over the past seven years, this fund has helped provide resources to a number of people during a difficult time in their lives. The school would like to be able to continue to provide assistance to those who need support. The amount of financial assistance given to an individual will be determined by the Blessings Fund committee. If you wish to make a contribution to this fund, please contact Michele Duncan, director of institutional advancement, at michele.duncan@hies.org or (404) 847-1153.
The Partain Family Scholarship
Ute Partain
Eugene and Ute Partain, the grandparents of two Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School graduates, Cara Murphy ’09 and Audrey Murphy ’13, recently made a generous initial contribution to establish a scholarship at HIES—The Partain Family Scholarship. This self-sustaining academic scholarship will be fully funded through the family’s annual contributions over the next five years and will provide substantial financial assistance to support worthy and deserving students enrolled in the Upper School. These students must demonstrate financial need. They will receive the award throughout their academic career at HIES as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements. The first recipient of the award is a new Upper School student. To learn more about establishing an endowed fund at HIES, please contact Michele Duncan, director of institutional advancement, at michele.duncan@hies.org or (404) 847-1153.

Lucie Bornholm’s Legacy Will Live on at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Her beloved former students and colleagues are seeing to it. The Middle School students are in the process of creating heartfelt “prayer poles” that will be installed on the Lower School playground, along with some new equipment that is being bought in honor of Coach B. Coach B—after more than 30 years of service to HIES as a teacher and coach—passed away in July after a two-year bout with cancer. She was one of the most beloved faculty members in school history. “The students [in all divisions] have been working hard on the poles and they are stunning, touching and deep,” Maria-Louise Coil, Middle School art teacher, said. “The best part of the process has been listening to the students as they share stories about her as they paint. There have been several ‘goose bump’ moments—for both the students and this art teacher alike. It has been and is a special undertaking that the students are taking to heart.” The poles are blocks of wood—in varying heights—with inscriptions and messages written to Coach B. They will be permanent fixtures on the grounds where she spent so much of her time and will serve as a reminder of how much she meant to the school and how much we all meant to her. People may spend as much time at the prayer poles as they might need on any given day to take in a moment of personal reflection and consideration of all the joys in life that surround us. These are the types of moments that Coach B fully embraced. “Some will have birdhouses on top,” Ms. Coil said. “The concept of folks being able to write their goodbye in the form of art, poem, psalm or symbol just hooked me. Hopefully, one will have a bird cut out of wood that will be a replica of the necklace her daughter bought her.” Alongside the poles will be the new playground equipment that was the brainchild of Coach B’s long-time colleague and friend—Randi Aton, Lower School P.E. teacher. “While I was in Houston, a Parents’ Association rep contacted me suggesting a bench on the playground with Lucie’s name on it,” Coach A said. “The thought was nice, but I couldn’t imagine just a bench for Lucie. I immediately thought of the equipment I had seen while on a playground in Texas when I was with my nephew. That is the way we should honor a woman who spent her whole career encouraging movement and play for children.” The new equipment will be unveiled Friday, Nov. 3, at the Homecoming Festival. The Lower School playground always had a spot in Coach B’s heart. Not that she will ever be forgotten, but Ms. Coil, the students, Coach A and the faculty involved with the prayer poles are making sure that her memory stays alive in ours.

Looking for Opportunities to Grow for Generations? The Case for Endowments
An endowment is composed of assets that are invested in perpetuity. Unlike Annual Fund proceeds, which are spent on immediate needs, or capital campaign monies, which are spent on buildings and land, an endowment’s principal is not spent. Instead, only a portion of its earnings are used each year, sometimes for specific purposes designated by the donor and sometimes for general purposes, according to the most urgent needs of the school. An endowment fund can also be a way to create a permanent named tribute to a family or faculty member, while supporting the school’s overall stability. It can also serve as an opportunity to invest in a special program or field of study. Currently, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s endowment is approximately $20 million, well below that recommended by the National Association of Independent Schools and well below the endowments of some fellow schools in the Atlanta area (see graph at right).
To date, HIES has enjoyed success thanks to its leadership, talented faculty, and devoted families, but a strong endowment would enable HIES to join the ranks of the most successful schools in America. If you would like more information on the endowment and ways that you might support it, please contact June Arnold at june.arnold@hies.org or (404) 303-2150 ext. 102. THE LAST WORD
A Hat Trick to Remember by Christopher Swann, Ph.D.
For me, it starts with the hat. In August of 1994, I was in my second year of teaching at Holy Innocents’ and an assistant coach for the varsity boys soccer team. The team was in Sarasota for a tournament. Our boys won that tournament, but that’s not what I remember most. I recall getting thoroughly sick of listening to Grateful Dead bootlegs as I drove a soccer van eight hours south of Atlanta. But mostly I remember the hat. I’d forgotten to pack one, and August in Florida feels like the sky is on fire. 42
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE
I was worried I’d get sunburned, but I didn’t want to spend what I thought was a ridiculous amount of money on a hat in the tourist shops of Sarasota. On the second day of the tourney, the boys handed me a bag, urging me to look inside. Inside the bag was a hat. It was khaki green and had a brim that buttoned up on both sides and a rawhide chin cord. I looked at the hat, then at the boys. They grinned. “Put it on!” they said. I did. It fit. There was a lump in my throat, but I still managed to say “Thanks, guys.” For the rest of the season, no matter the weather, at every single game, I wore that hat. *** In the fall of 1994, the Upper School was still the brash young kid in Atlanta, looking to make a mark. True, we shared half of the Riley Building with the Middle School, but we were going places. We had our first senior class. Long before we fielded a football team, our dominant fall sport was boys’ soccer. And that year, the Golden Bears soccer squad was formidable. And hungry. Led by Coach Brad Kolowich, who was assisted by Craig Savage and myself, this team was poised to earn the school’s first state title. In our way stood the Pace Knights. We had a history with Pace. At the time, they were our biggest rival, our closest match in terms of skill and power. Our undefeated season was blemished by two ties, one of which was with Pace. And our seniors especially wanted a shot at Pace—in their first JV match in ninth grade at HI, Pace had clobbered them. And now, in their final high school soccer match, our seniors faced their nemeses one last time, for the fall championship trophy, on Baker Field.
That season, twenty-three years ago, has moments that are still sharp in the memories of the players and coaches. Mostly I remember being a bundle of nerves, walking up and down in front of our bench, trying not to chew my fingernails. Coach K had built the soccer program from scratch, so God only knows what was going through his mind. Craig Savage, who had actually played soccer at Duke and had forgotten more soccer than I will ever know, was the consummate veteran, excited but in control. Me, I was the guy who had never advanced beyond JV level in high school, and my tangible contributions to the varsity soccer program were driving the van, helping to run drills, and amusing the players as I muttered to myself while marching up and down the sideline at games. I didn’t care. It wasn’t that I wanted to win. It’s that I wanted these boys to win. Besides, they had given me a hat. I may have never worn a varsity soccer jersey, but I had that hat. The hat was my jersey. It was overcast that day, cool and a little wet. Coach K said something about the field conditions, while Coach Savage dispensed last-minute advice. As always, Coach K graciously asked me if I had anything to add. I may have said something inspiring like, “Go win.” Probably I just repeated something Coach Savage had already said. The boys nodded solemnly anyway. They were standing on the sidelines, but in their minds they were already out on the field, doing battle. And then they were on the pitch, adjusting their shin guards, sizing up their opponents. Pace looked good. More than good—professional. To say it felt like the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team going up against the U.S.S.R. would be ridiculously melodramatic. But that’s what it felt like.
Pace’s number-one scorer, an outstanding player from Europe, looked as cool and collected as a colonel in a war briefing. We had a plan for him. As for the rest, it was up to God, luck, and whoever wanted it most. Kickoff. Soccer is called the beautiful game. That isn’t how I would describe that match. Mud flew everywhere. The boys’ clean jerseys were filthy by the first substitution. There was no thoughtful passing back and forth, no elegant plays. It was speed and strength, sprinting down the sidelines for a shot on goal, booting the ball so hard it sounded like mortar fire. The fans—it looked as if the entire HI student body was there, and then some—were deafening. Pace advanced on our goal immediately, looking for an early strike. Our defense blocked them, then blocked them again. The problem was, Pace’s defense was doing the same thing to our boys. And so the game began to settle into a titanic struggle at midfield. In the seventh or eighth minute, though, we had a throw-in on Pace’s end of the field. There was nothing particularly special about the situation—it was a routine play. But Matt Mays took the throw-in and launched the ball, and by “launched” I mean he fired it downfield like a Tomahawk missile. The ball flew through the air, then skipped off the wet grass between Pace defenders. Everyone who wasn’t already standing stood up. The rest of us stood on tiptoes, craning our necks to see. Where was the ball? All I could see was jerseys and legs. No, there it was—it was bouncing in front of the Pace goal. And Clay Kelsh—who would return to HI years later as a beloved Latin teacher and dean of students—came out of nowhere and, with a short, perfectly-timed kick, punched the ball into the back of the Pace net. continued>>>

“
Bedlam. Screaming, howling at the sky, people jumping up and down and hugging each other. Our boys piled on top of Clay in front of the Pace goal. One of the Pace players picked up the ball and threw it at the pile. Coach K and Coach Savage and I screamed at our players to get up, to stop celebrating, before somebody got carded by a ref. Our boys got up and ran back to their side of the field to cheers from the fans. The Pace players looked stunned, then angry, then determined. Now the real slugfest began. Describing the rest of that game in detail is beyond me. Imagine almost having a heart seizure, then getting a few moments of respite, and then your blood pressure shoots through the roof as Pace drives on goal, only to have Matt Mays or Jeff Gartland or Ladd Gould or Tom Anderson clear the ball away, and then you can breathe again. Like that over and over and over. What about Pace’s vaunted European scorer? Two words: Alan Morgan. With assistance from our star midfielder, Javi Roman, Alan stuck to the Pace player like white on rice. Alan’s only goal for the entire game was to mark that man and deny him the ball. Anytime the ball got near him, Alan was there, kicking it away. If the Pace player somehow got the ball, he would turn and there would be Javi. Alan and Javi played that kid like a grade-schooler in a Monkey in the Middle game. We may have neutralized their key scorer, but we couldn’t get very close to Pace’s goal, as Pace stacked the midfield and forward lines and so kept the ball on our side of the field. So our team hunkered down for a defensive war, and the game devolved into a kickball match: Pace would drive on our goal, relentlessly, and just as relentlessly our defense would boot the ball far downfield, eating up the clock. And then, with about fifteen minutes left, there was a furious churning in front of our goal as both sides scram-

bled for possession. Marshall Tyler dove for the ball, but it was booted away before he could reach it. But one Pace player, kicking madly for the ball in the hopes of a game-tying goal, instead accidentally kicked Marshall flush in the mouth. Refs blew whistles, stopping the game. Marshall was on the ground, then he was back up. A gasp rose from the crowd. Marshall was bleeding—his lip was split clean through. Our student trainer Keith Dangel ran out onto the field to check out the injury. On the sideline, Peter Fotos, our backup keeper, turned pale, then began frantically warming up. Marshall was insisting he was okay, even though it was becoming harder for him to talk due to his swelling mouth. Keith half-escorted him off the field and huddled off to the side with him, doing something with gauze. Peter, looking grim, took his place in goal. The Pace team had clapped along with the rest of us when Marshall walked off the field, but I knew what they were thinking. Our starting keeper was out. This was their chance. There were a lot of heroes in that game. Clay, obviously, for scoring that goal. Alan for shutting down one of their star players. Matt and the other defenders for never giving an inch. But Peter Fotos deserves a shout-out. He stopped at least one good shot on goal, perhaps a few more. In his shoes, I
would have psyched myself out, probably deflected a ball into the goal, then for the rest of the year—if not the rest of my life—replayed that loss over and over in my mind. Peter, though, stepped up for ten of the most nerve-wracking minutes I have experienced. And when Marshall came back in with something like four minutes left in the game, his mouth packed with gauze and his lip covered with butterfly bandages, Peter turned the unsullied goal over to him and trotted off the field to a standing ovation. In the 1994-95 yearbook, there is a two-page spread of that game. One photo shows players and fans on the ground in a victory pile, seconds after the final whistle declared the Golden Bears fall soccer state champions. At the very edge of that photo is me. I’m in profile, running but frozen in time, one foot raised in the air as if I’m step-marching, my mouth wide open in a celebratory cry. The caption to the side reads, “Coach Swann looks for a place to jump in on the pile of fans.” On my shoulders, hanging from the rawhide chin cord, is the hat. I still have the hat. Tonight I took it off a shelf in my closet and tried it on. It’s pretty tight—like a lot of my old clothes—but it still looks good. Maybe I’ll wear it to one of my son’s soccer matches. “What’s that hat?” they’ll ask me. “My varsity jersey,” I’ll tell them.

Thank You!
Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School is one of the country’s best schools and it gets better every year. This year was no exception, and your support is a large part of our success. Thanks to you we have been able to hire and retain outstanding faculty who support and challenge our students to achieve more than they ever thought possible. In the classroom. In the arts. On the fields and courts. In service to the community. We have been able to provide the facilities and the technology that allow our teachers, directors and coaches to do their jobs with excellence. We have been able to say yes to requests for software and equipment for future scientists, instruments for budding musicians and resources for academic superstars in the making. Thanks to your generosity, we received a total of $3,697,018 in gifts and pledges. Once again, our Board of Trustees and faculty and staff demonstrated their commitment with 100 percent participation in the Annual Fund. Eighty-six percent of our parents contributed $731,284. Our Leadership Circle (those who gave at least $1,959) was comprised of 193 members. Through your donations, you benefited every HIES student and teacher in ways large and small, such as the following: •
Faculty support so we can attract and retain the best and brightest
•
Professional development for faculty
•
Financial flexibility to launch new programs within each Division.
•
Financial aid for students
•
Capital improvments
We offer our heartfelt thanks for your help in keeping our school vital and strong and always improving. We especially want to thank our tireless volunteers who help to make possible so many of the things that make our Community so strong and unique. We hope that you will read the 20162017 Annual Report with an appreciation for a great year. In that spirit, we look forward to many great years to come for Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The HIES Parents’ Association supports and enriches the school’s academic and community programs. The PA serves as a liaison to promote communication between the parents, administration, faculty and staff. The PA also facilitates Fundraising and Community Life committees so we can marshal the resources, talents and efforts of hundreds of parent volunteers to provide the “extras” that enrich the lives of HIES students and our community. In 2017, the HIES Gatsby Gala, Tuition Raffle, Bear Benefits Card, Bingo Night, Bear WearHouse, and Community Partners enabled the PA to give over $240,000 to the School which directly benefits HIES students. In addition to fundraising, our Parents’ Association also supports and funds the following for our HIES community: • Parent Representatives for each grade and division • Welcoming new families to HIES • Monthly Grade Level Newsletters and Announcements • Faculty and Staff Spring Appreciation Lunch • Teacher Treats Breakfasts • Daily fresh fruit snacks for MS/US students • Christmas Luncheon for Faculty and Staff • Spring for a Cause (Fun Run/Spring Fling) Charity Picnic and Carnival • Liaison to promote communication between the School and parents • Parent Education Events with guest speakers • 6th Grade Cotillion class coordination • Caring Bears meal delivery to Holy Innocents’ families in need • Monthly Parents’ Prayer group meetings

FINE ARTS ALLIANCE
The Fine Arts Alliance (FAA) continues to grow through enthusiastic parent support. With committed volunteers, we are able to offer more ways than ever to support the arts garnering many accolades and awards for the HIES Fine Arts Department and its students. Since a strong Fine Arts program benefits all students, every parent is encouraged to become involved. The Fine Arts Alliance organizes parent volunteers to support chorus, band, orchestra, drama, visual arts and media literacy programs. Parent volunteers assist in many areas including receptions, concessions, box office sales, field trips and events, such as Open Mic Night and Film Festivals. To keep Fine Arts awareness in the forefront, state-of-the-art flat screen televisions are maintained throughout the divisions, looping up-to-date Fine Arts Events and awards. Additionally, Christmas decorations around campus, including all the trees, wreaths, and garlands, are designed and installed by the Alliance. Building upon the momentum of an outstanding year for the Fine Arts Department, the 2017-2018 school year will continue to add to these efforts. The Alliance will provide new resources to our students and teachers as a result of significant fundraising efforts. One of the key highlights in 2016-2017 was the continuation of our Fine Arts Alliance partnership with the High Museum of Art, providing numerous opportunities to HIES students, faculty, and the parent community. On February 27, 2018, the Fine Arts Alliance will host the biennial Art & Fashion
84
The funds raised by the Fine Arts Alliance contributed to the Fine Arts department in the following ways: • Visiting clinicians for band students • Purchase of bass for LS Orchestra • New furniture for US photography classroom • Cameras for Media Literacy Program • Rental of Lefont Theaters for US Film Festival • Sound engineers for all theatre productions, Wireless microphones for the drama department Show “A Heart for the Arts”. It is the premier fundraising event for the Fine Arts programs at Holy Innocents’ and hosts more than 300 parents, friends, and faculty. The Fine Arts Alliance also raises funds in a variety of ways. One of the larger resources is dues collected from Invest in Excellence. Other parent-centered fund-raising activities include the Alliance’s annual Wreath and Christmas décor sale and a brand-new fundraising project in 2016-2017 entitled Pies with a Purpose. Partnering with Darden’s Delights, we believe that this successful fundraising effort will continue to grow in the 2017-2018 school year as it was very successfully received in its inaugural year. Other fundraising efforts are more child centric and include concession and box office sales for four theatrical productions and a highly popular community-building movie night for the Primary School and Lower School students and their families.
• Musical arrangements for the a cappella group • Scholarships for graduating seniors • Academic affiliation with the High Museum of Art • Sponsored Atlanta playwright Tom Key workshop and consultation with US students • Rebuilt kilns in LS and MS art studios • Sponsored the Performing Arts Banquet Active parents are needed to help maintain our strong Fine Arts programs. For more information on how you can become involved, visit our page on the school’s website under Campus Life/Parent Organizations or contact Alesa McArthur, President of the Fine Arts Alliance.

HORIZONS ATLANTA Horizons Atlanta at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School believes that every child, regardless of background, should have the same chance at making a positive impact on his or her community. Our six-week academic enrichment program housed in the HIES Primary School and Upper School provides this opportunity to economically disadvantaged local public school students by eliminating critical barriers to success. Horizons students are challenged academically, socially, and physically through our Global Academy, a blend of project-based and service learning activities teaching each child how to be a productive global citizen. Horizons secures funding from local foundations, individuals, corporations, and community organizations. In May of 2017, Horizons at HIES participated in Horizons Giving Day, a national effort to raise funds and awareness of the program. We surpassed our site’s goal of $20,000, thanks to many individual donations from the HIES community. The funds raised contribute to our operations and programming including our highly qualified staff, transportation, meals, field trips, and supplies. The program would not be possible without the support of the Holy Innocents’ community. Horizons would like to thank all of our volunteers, donors, and board members for their time, talents, and generous resources.
