The Class of 1995 was the first to graduate as seniors from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, a full generation removed from the toddling maiden-voyagers that proudly filled their diminutive classroom seats in 1959. HIES began in September that year under the leadership of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church rector, The Rev. Hugh Saussy, Jr., and was guided by Lillabel West, the first school director. In the 19591960 academic year there were little more than 70 students enrolled in the entire school. Cigar boxes were required, not confiscated, and to graduate meant students would be moving not to dorm rooms across the country, organic chemistry labs and tailgates, but rather on to discover if Dick and Jane would meet even more friends and neighbors in the second grade. Oh, the places they would go in 1960! Like members of the HIES Class of 1995, I am a Gen Xer. I am old enough to have worn a Nirvana t-shirt out of a deep-seated devotion to the band and not as an ironic statement. I was once cool, or assumed it. Once, but no longer. I came to that realization this summer while attempting to purchase a smoothie. The Payne family had just returned to Atlanta after a five-year hiatus in Memphis. In due course, we went through all the normal moving-back-from-out-of-state processes. Setting up gas, water, power, trash, over-tipping the movers and switching from a state bank to one with more of a national footprint. And with that bank switch came a new debit card. My new card had “the chip.” My old card didn’t. In fact, no card I ever owned before had the chip. The chip encrypts information to help increase data security when making transactions at terminals or ATMs that are chipenabled. It also initiates an impromptu IQ test that I fail every single time I use the card—most notably, the first time. So there I was. I ordered my smoothie. It was the same smoothie I have ordered every time I have ever ordered a smoothie—which makes me wonder why I still insist upon staring at the menu with even the slightest look of critical examination on my face before placing the order. ... When the smooth-rista finished making the drink to my specifications—so that its chemical profile would be identical to that of a chocolate milkshake—she rang me up. The total was given, and I whipped out my brand new, nationalfootprint-bank debit card. A card, that by the way, has a magnetic stripe. I repeat: It has a magnetic stripe. As I have done 10,000 times before when making purchases, I swiped the stripe. Nothing. I turned it around. Swiped again. Nothing. “Do you have the chip, sir?” the cashier asked. “Why yes. Of course, I have the chip,” I scoffed. “My bank has a national footprint. See?” “That’s why it’s not swiping.” “Oh, I thought this was one of the scanners that can do the swiping and the chipping. I’ll just go the ole ‘chip route’ on this one, eh?” I had no idea what to do. I was stranded at the counter twirling my chip-embedded card through my fingers like Doc Holliday rolled
silver coins over his knuckles before calling Johnny Ringo—except I dropped it. Twice. Where does ‘the chip’ go? I tried to read the context clues, look for a flashing arrow, follow a trail of chia seeds. Nothing. I began to feel the hungry eyes of every customer behind me in the lunch-time line. And so, in an act of total desperation I began to wave the card over the scanner. Perhaps the machine would have lasers or something that could read this mysterious chip card. Nothing. After I had displayed my new level of ignorance for the world to see, the cashier reached across the counter, picked up the scanner and pointed to the card slot. “It goes here.” “Oh, y’all have the ‘front-loader.’ Ha. I’ll just be. Been a long time since I’ve seen one of these.” I put the chip in and removed it quickly. BUZZZ!!! Such an aggressive sound. Left no doubt that I was doing something completely wrong. And we all heard it three more times before I relinquished. I knew I had been beaten. I asked the long-suffering smooth-rista to tell me exactly what to do. She did. I paid and left with a half-melted chocolate-flavored drink and thought about how hard my brother and I used to laugh at our mother when she was about the age I am now, after we got our first television with a remote control. She would change channels with the remote, holding it tightly with both hands, like she was in a shooting gallery, taking dead aim, terrified she’d miss the target and scorch the family photo on the wall. We’ve come full circle. The passage of time is humbling. But, it also makes you feel sincere gratitude for the moments you’ve enjoyed and the moments you’ve shared in a community—much like all the moments I enjoyed and shared during my first term in the HIES communications office, which began more than 15 years ago. Upon my recent return to my old post at HIES, I was overwhelmed by warm feelings of sentimentality when I saw the faces of so many people near and dear to my family and me. I was also heartened by the reassurance that comes from knowing that although the earth is spinning at a thousand miles per hour, the timeless values of community, scholarship and the love for self and others, still stand firm at the center of our small world on Mount Vernon Highway. There may be new buildings, new faces, cutting-edge educational programs and classroom techniques, but the heart and soul of Holy Innocents’ have been treated well by time, by the passage of time. They endure. They remain unchanged, unblemished by the corrosive effects of the raging rivers of fleeting trends, attitudes, magnetic stripes and chip cards. Members of the alumni, Torchbearer is your magazine. It always will be. Let us know where you are and what you are doing. We want to tell your stories. Holy Innocents’ is your school. It is our school. And it always will be. Some things will never change.

ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARADE The Halloween Parade has been a beloved HIES tradition since its beginning in 1971, when costumed students in pre-school through eighth grade paraded in front of what is now the Lower School. This joyful event brings together faculty, staff, parents and children of all ages for a special occasion that celebrates both the youngest and oldest students in the HIES community. Pictured above are the 33 Alpha-Omega students of the Class of 2017 with Dorothy Sullivan, Lower School principal and consummate rainbow leaper.

GOLDEN BEARS GET UNICEF KID POWER “Finally, we have a chance to save other kids.” That’s what third-grader Dawson Radaszewski said as he walked into a UNICEF Kid Power kickoff Friday on campus. Kid Power involves wearing safe activity bands and then synching those to a special kidfriendly app. HIES students in grades 1 through 5 will wear the bands this year while doing everyday activities, and acquire points that earn therapeutic food packets that UNICEF supplies to malnourished children around the world. Simply put: The more students move, the more points they will earn, and the more lives they can save. Randi Aton, the health and physical education teacher who organized Kid Power for Holy Innocents’, expects the project to empower the Lower School. “When does a child in their lifetime feel that they have the opportunity to save a life, or the power to change the world? This gives our kids the opportunity, and they know it.” Thanks to two generous donors, Lower School administrators originally purchased 376 UNICEF Kid Power Bands from Target, a U.S. Fund for UNICEF Presenting Sponsor. Then teachers and administrators became interested in wearing the activity bands, and now Upper School students in the HIES Program for Global Studies may get involved, at least in discussions that are sparked about global service issues. For example, Lower School students will go on “missions” and learn about different cultures. “Throughout the year, our Global, Faith and Service classes will study the children we’re reaching in the different areas of the world,” Aton said. “There are even videos on the app.” The project is being incorporated into other classroom activities, as well. “A teacher might say, you know you have to have about 2,400 steps for a Kid Power Point,” Aton said. “Then students can translate it into an equation to see how many kids are getting this nutrition.” (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foodpackets contain a specially designed protein and vitamin-rich peanut paste.) Third-grader Wyatt Maiellaro plans to wear his even during his football games, “so I can get more steps to help people.” Classmate Hollis Thompson, who actually received hers as a birthday present last July, likes the trackers because, “I want to give to kids.” And Truman Gephardt’s favorite thing is “not that it counts your steps but that it feeds malnourished children in countries, like Africa.” Truman’s mom, Tricia Gephardt, identified the project as an example of Holy Innocents’ thinking on a large scale. “The school has a new idea and goes for it, not on a small scale, but on a scale that includes everyone,” she said. “This Kid Power Band enables my boys (Truman and Ernest) to make a difference—to know that they have the power to move and help another child in need. “And now they can envision a world that is bigger than they are,” she added. “We look at the map to see where the countries are and why they need help. And we can use that lesson closer to home and help people in our own country and community, based on the lessons we learn with the bands.” Students, faculty and administrators are doing the project collaboratively, as a team. That should take off any competitive edge. “We’re doing this as a family,” Aton said. COURTYARD GARDEN DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF ALICE MALCOLM The Alice Law Malcolm Garden, located outside Malcolm Library and adjacent to the Stephens Family Courtyard, was officially unveiled and dedicated Oct. 24. Alice Law Malcolm, a beloved figure at Holy Innocents’ from 1959 (the year the school opened) until her death on Oct. 10, 2015, was a passionate gardener who held a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia. The courtyard garden, which includes small rose bushes and fall plantings, has as its centerpiece a striking water feature, composed of glass, which displays the HIES shield.
TIE CEREMONY MARKS BEGINNING OF SCHOOL YEAR Kindergartners presented seniors with their senior class ties and seniors gave kindergartners bookbags last August, in the Stephens Family Courtyard, marking the beginning of the 2016-2017 academic year. Head of School Paul Barton spoke at the beginning of the ceremony, telling students, faculty and guests that the 128 members of the senior class are now the school leaders. “These are young men and women who model kindness, perseverance and integrity by the example they set in classrooms, on athletic fields, on stage in the FAB and in chapel — they will lead us in the way they treat everyone, from the littlest among us to one other,” he said. “To the Class of 2017, we ask you to honor and appreciate the trust we are placing in you as you receive your tie from a member of the Class of 2029. You have earned our respect and admiration,” Mr. Barton said. “Lead us to the best year our school has ever had.”

THE PHYSICS OF SUCCESS One man’s journey from the ‘worst wrestler in Golden Bears history’ to head of the class at UGA.
IN
November, Alfred “Alfie” Farris ’09 returned to Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School to deliver the keynote address at the HIES National Honor Society induction. Mr. Farris is a graduate student in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia, within the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He spoke to students about the value of trying new things and being persistent. Mr. Farris graduated from Emory University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in applied physics. He is currently working as a teaching assistant and pursuing a doctoral degree in physics at UGA. During his time at UGA, he has won the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award, is a member of the Future Faculty Program and is currently teaching a college-level physics class. What follows on the adjacent page are some of his words to the NHS inductees, the Upper School and the HIES community:

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Alfred “Alfie” Farris ’09
alpha-omega | physics teacher | athens, ga. I felt average at Holy Innocents’, but when I was inducted into the NHS it gave me the confidence to challenge myself and to accept the challenges of my teachers and coaches. Today, I am carrying out computer simulations of proteins and use statistical mechanics to understand how and why they fold. Seven years ago I was sitting in this chapel, listening to members of the alumni talk about their experiences, and I didn’t really ever think I would be that guy. But, here we are. While teaching intro physics last semester, I ended up teaching one of my classmate’s little sisters, who also graduated from HIES. It is interesting how small the world is. I started off as one of the worst wrestlers in the history of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. I only won a single match my first year. One thing that changed this path of mediocrity was my decision to take chances, even though I might fail, which is always scary. I decided to take the hardest classes that I could. I decided to really commit to wrestling. I became captain of the wrestling team, and ended up losing in the state finals. This was an example of failure in my eyes, and this is part of taking chances. But it taught me so much more than winning would have. Character determines how we respond to all of life’s hurdles, or how persistent we are.
Academic accomplishments and athletic accomplishments are quite different. Academics require a desire to learn. Athletics require a desire to lead, to lead your team to victory. They both build character. Persistence is your friend. You will find that to be true only by taking chances, which can entail failure. At Holy Innocents’, I met a few amazing teachers who pushed me harder academically than I had ever been pushed. I met a few amazing coaches who pushed me harder athletically that I had ever been pushed. Jeff Walrich was the most influential coach that I had, and probably the most influential person on my overall development. Other coaches who were also super influential were Kacey Michelsen, Stacey Davis and Daniel Forrester. Do not be afraid to fail. Students should take a chance. Take the harder classes, play a different sport, start an organization. Take the initiative to seek out the challenges. And teachers must push the students; I promise they will love you for it eventually, and then tell the world about you. Being on the other side now, teaching physics to college kids, I find the most rewarding thing is to push them to the point where you see them grow, just like so many of my HIES teachers and coaches did for me.

Ultimate Trailblazer From competitive Frisbee to her pursuit of a Ph.D, Christine Georgakakos ’11 welcomes all challenges in life and on the Appalachian Trail
T
Two thousand one hundred eighty-nine miles. ... It takes long enough to type that distance. Imagine what it would take to hike it. And with a heavy pack strapped to your back the entire way—from Springer Mountain, Ga. to Baxter Peak-Katahdin, Maine. The legendary Appalachian Trail. Two thousand one hundred eighty-nine miles. Through wind, storms, oppressive heat, bugs of every variety, injuries, setbacks, nights darker than dark, literally stuck in the middle of nowhere. Often with zero cell service to call for help, or even to call home. No Google to help you determine the difference between poison ivy and Virginia creeper, or how best to build a campfire with rainsoaked wood. Two thousand one hundred eighty-nine miles. For mere mortals, such an invitation would be met with a, “Thanks, but no thanks.” But for Christine Georgakakos ’11, she thought it sounded like a brilliant way to spend her summers between graduate-school semesters and Ultimate Frisbee competitions, a sport in which she excels. Ms. Georgakakos has never been one to shy away from a challenge, a reputation she earned during her days at HIES, as far back as her time spent on the Middle School Science Olympiad Team. Ms. Janet Silvera, eighth-grade Accelerated Physical Science teacher, said that she could see the spark in her ambitious student’s eyes long ago. “Christine joined the team when she was in the sixth grade, and my husband, Max, was the ‘building coach,’” Ms. Silvera said. “Throughout Middle School the two of them built, tested, broke and rebuilt balsa-wood bridges and towers that could hold a 33-pound weight, or more. We still have some in the eighth-grade lab.” Ms. Silvera went on to say that her former star Science Olympian possessed “an amazing blend of brilliance,
10
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2017
strength and determination along with a caring and compassion for all living things and our environment.” These are qualities that no doubt served Ms. Georgakakos well during the two consecutive summers that she and her boyfriend, Dan Zandam, spent starting and finishing the Appalachian Trail, a journey that was one of the most challenging and wonderful experiences of her life. “We both dreamed about doing it for so long, and we finally made up our minds to take on the A.T.,” Ms. Georgakakos said. “We were so excited and got off to a great start. But about two weeks into it, we were both asking ourselves, ‘What in the world have we gotten into?’ Everything hurt. Our ankles, backs, feet. We were thinking: ‘If this is how bad it hurts now, how are we ever going to finish?’ And, that was a question that we just never let ourselves answer. We couldn’t.” But the question was eventually answered late in the summer of 2016 when the two “thru-hikers” topped out on Mt. Katahdin in Maine, successfully completing the journey that began the previous summer in Georgia when Ms. Georgakakos had earned her master’s degree in biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University. She completed her hike of a lifetime just in time to begin a new challenge, again at Cornell — her pursuit of a Ph.D. in biological and environmental engineering. And while her academic, personal and professional endeavors may sometimes get the better of her, they certainly will not keep her from reaching the summits that she has mapped out. She will always be able to draw strength from her experience of finishing the bold and audacious journey of two thousand one hundred eighty-nine miles. “Having reached the end of the trail, finishing something so difficult that I started, just gives me a confidence that I can take anything on, as long as I have set my mind to it.”

ALUMNI ATHLETICS
Returning to Form BY Dunn Neugebauer
The funny thing is, Connor Thompson ’14 didn’t plan on playing college tennis. He was finished with it – game, set and match. Perhaps many couldn’t blame him. After all, he’d done the traveling, drilling, the tournaments and the grind of the junior circuit since he was old enough to swing a racket. The resume was all intact - #1 in the nation at one time as a kid – always among the top 10, and he later went on to perform brilliantly as expected as a Golden Bear. Unbeaten as an eighth grader in JV, he compiled a 63-1 record at #1 singles during his high school tenure – arguably the best career in HIES history along with alum and former UGA All-American Chad Carlson. Not surprisingly, his teams advanced to the postseason all four of his years, getting to the Elite 8 his last season. After that, though, he was done. “He was accepted to Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss before deciding to stay closer to home and go to North Georgia,” his mom, Valerie, said. “The plan was to transfer in to Georgia the following fall. He thought his tennis career was over; he had stopped playing USTA tournaments and his once stellar ranking had disappeared.” As fate would have it, however, the UNCGreensboro women’s coach – Jeff Trivette – was watching a girl play at Blackburn Park the summer after Connor’s graduation. Connor was working there and was out hitting.
ALUMNI ATHLETICS
“Jeff saw him hit, called the men’s coach and – the next day – we were on a plane flying to Greensboro,” Valerie added. In summation, Connor was offered a scholarship and, at first, didn’t know what to do. After all, he’d halfway already moved to Athens, didn’t know a soul in North Carolina and hadn’t a clue what to expect about the potential move. After deliberation, he accepted the offer in July, rushed through the school’s final orientation and jumped in with both feet. “I still can’t explain what happened,” Connor’s father, Scot, would say later. “It’s like something clicked inside his head. All of a sudden, he was interested in playing competitive tennis again.” Valerie believes Connor felt he still had something left to prove, and Connor never realized it until someone showed interest in him. “From there, his competitive juices just started flowing and it’s been a perfect fit,” she said. Getting situated on the courts at UNC-Greensboro, Connor lost 15-20 pounds and eased back into form. He played his freshman season at #1 doubles; started the year at #6 singles but quickly moved up to #2 after putting in more-than-impressive results. Last year as a sophomore, he moved up to the top singles slot while playing #2 doubles. And this fall, he won the A-1 doubles title at the UNC Charlotte
Fall Invitational. If that isn’t enough, the ace also won the NC State Fall Invitational last year in the A-1 singles and B-1 doubles. Also last fall, he beat a player from each of the “Big Four” schools in North Carolina – Duke, N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest. He also captured the ITA Summer Circuit title at UGA this past July, and lost in a match tie-breaker in the finals of the UNC-Charlotte ITA event. He finished last spring at 14-8 in singles his sophomore season. “I think he’s been lucky to have the coaches he’s had,” Valerie summarized. “First at Holy Innocents’, his personal coach, Noel Wadawu and now Jeff, who is now the men’s coach. All of them have the perfect temperament and understand Connor’s personality in order for him to maximize his potential.” In looking ahead, there’s assuredly more to come out of Connor Thompson’s arsenal. Just over the halfway point of his college career, the wins are sure to keep stacking up, he’s loving the competitive environment, and he’s excited for the upcoming spring in North Carolina. It’s a comeback story in a way, one with the end fortunately not written yet. It’s also a great thing he decided to pull his rackets out of his closet a couple summers ago. That decision continues to make a lot of people happy.
AROUND THE HORN: COLLEGIATE BEARS MAKING THE GRADE We could fill the Torchbearer with former HIES student/athletes who are now gracing the collegiate athletic fields. In 2015-2016 alone, a school record 16 signed on to continue their careers, most notably perhaps four-time state track champion Chelsea Zoller. Chelsea won the 400-meter crown her freshman, sophomore and junior year before capturing the Georgia title in the 300-meter hurdles as a senior. She is now at Georgia, preparing for her first track season as a Dog. In spite of the small size of Holy Innocents’, there are still three wrestlers not only still competing, but are at the Division I level. Lee Davis (2012) – a three-time state placer and state champion – is at North Carolina State. Jason Grimes (2013) is at American University in Washington D.C. and brought home state championships his junior and senior season at HIES, and Rod Davis (2014) is at N.C. State with his brother, Lee, and was also
a four-time state placer and state champion. Starting with Lee, he originally enrolled at Mercer in Macon to play football, but returned to his passion the following year.
place in the Asics National Championships as a graduated senior before being named to the Honor Roll at State in 2015 and 2016. He also wrestled at 184 this year.
He has been named to the Academic Honor Roll from 2014-2016 at State, and wrestled in the 174-pound class this winter.
Tune in to each issue for more stories about former Bears still competing. Also, please email me at dunn.neugebauer@hies.org with info in order to be included in future editions of Torchbearer. We have many still out there, I don’t want to leave anyone out.
He was part of the ACC championship team and was national runner-up in the National Duals. If that isn’t enough, he was a University Greco AllAmerican in 2015. As for Jason, he was also a four-time state placer with a second place finish along with his two titles. He is a four-year starter at American; and a University National Greco Roman champion in 2015. He is projected to compete at 184 this upcoming season.
That’s all for now – Go Bears ... past, present and future!
Rod was a two-time state finalist to go with his state crown while at HIES. He captured third

A Timely Conversation
HIES Hosted Dick Gephardt, Newt Gingrich for REAL Talks Forum
N
ewt Gingrich has four words he always keeps mind: listen, learn, help and lead. And Dick Gephardt believes that patience, listening and taking time are keys to success in politics, and in life. The two men, former members of the U.S. House of Representatives who shared the spotlight on the political stage in the 1990s, shared these insights and others in October 2016, at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s inaugural REAL Talks Atlanta event. “Preserving Our Republic: A Conversation With Dick Gephardt and Newt Gingrich” was moderated by national political correspondent Patricia Murphy at the Atlanta History Center. Mr. Gephardt (D-MO), a current HIES grandparent, was the Democratic House minority leader when he handed the gavel over to incoming Speaker Gingrich (R-GA) in 1995. “With partnership but with purpose I pass this great gavel of our government,” Mr. Gephardt told Mr. Gingrich then. “With resignation but with resolve, I hereby end 40 years of Democratic rule of this house.” During the evening, to 375 guests at REAL Talks, Mr. Gephardt described Mr. Gingrich as a leader and a visionary. “And I also knew he really cared about solving problems.” And Mr. Gingrich expressed the same respect for Mr. Gephardt and the U.S. system of government. “Dick and I had worked together long enough by then to know that we could work together.” Mr. Gephardt ended his remarks for the night on a high note, optimistic about the future of the United States, no matter the outcome of the election soon to follow, harking back to his time in congress, when both tensions and stakes were very high. “We did work together and respected each other and worked to get things done,” he said. “These are tough subjects that we deal with [today]. It would be so easy if one person could make these decisions but it would be the wrong way to do it. It takes patience, time, listening and endless meetings. ... Our democracy is self-cleansing. If you don’t like it, be a candidate or support a candidate. We are all so privileged to be citizens of this great country, and we all need to be engaged.” ABOUT REAL Talks ATLANTA 2016 REAL Talks Atlanta, which grew out of the HI Speaker Series, was organized by Heidi Domescik, Chris Durst, Danielle Elms and Erik Vincent, as well as HIES parents Tricia Gephardt, Missy McClatchey and Mike Johnson. The event, available to viewers by live streaming, was sponsored by the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at Washington University in St. Louis, and Homrich Berg Wealth Management.

Since earning his diploma from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, Sam Johnson ’09 has graduated from Mercer University, gotten married, founded the nonprofit My Vision for Refugees and opened an orphanage in Guinea. ... And that’s just the beginning. Sam Johnson ’09 has a story that deserves to be told, a story that all
members of the HIES community should know, need to know. It will break your heart, then fill it with so much joy, so much pride that you swear it will burst. He has survived circumstances unimaginable to most. And yet, he has thrived. And though he has thrived, he does not seek riches, fame or the everyday creature comforts alien to him as a boy in a U.N. refugee camp at N’zerekore, in southern Guinea—where Mr. Johnson, his mother and siblings spent eight years living in a tent, receiving one small ration of food per day. No article in an alumni magazine can even begin to capture the harrowing hours, the beautiful moments, the awe-inspiring and gigantic leaps he and his family made from hopeless desperation to finding themselves the recipients of what should be considered nothing less than a miracle. There is not enough room in Torchbearer. There are not enough pages. What follows now is a meager summary that will attempt to provide some background, some modest insight into a young man’s tireless struggle to provide an ounce of hope in an ocean of despair.

“Places of Hope,” continued The following is taken with permission from Sam Johnson’s website, MyVision4Refugees.org:
In 1998, when he was just 9-years-old, Sam Johnson watched from a hilltop as his village burned. His father lay dead somewhere below, one of the countless victims of rebel mayhem sweeping across Liberia. His mother hurried her five young children into the forest; then she led her family north, traveling at night to have a better chance of avoiding the roving militias. The Johnsons were the lucky ones. They actually made it to the U.N. refugee camp at N’zerekore, in southern Guinea, where Sam, his mother, and siblings
spent the next eight years living in a tent, receiving one small ration of food per day, and hoping against hope for deliverance. In February of 2007, the children’s mother also passed away, one month before the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees transported them to Clarkston, Ga., east of Atlanta. That’s where they came to the attention Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. Sam received his high school diploma in 2009, then enrolled in Mercer University in Macon, Ga. He literally took every course he could, even quitting the soccer team—leaving the game he loved and excelled at—to focus on his studies. “I wanted to learn everything,”
20
he says. “Like when you don’t have food, I was craving education.” Sam graduated Mercer in 2013 after a remarkable career that included quadruple majors—Political Science, International Relations, Women’s and Gender Studies and French. His next step was something he’d dreamed about since he set foot on the plane six years earlier in Conakry, Guinea; he returned to the camp in which he’d spent his childhood, the first step of his plan to help those who’d been left behind. “I kept my dream alive and saved up money during college,” Sam says. “I had work study and worked during the summer, and when I graduated, I had about $2,000 to help with.” After sharing his story with a number of Mercer faculty and friends, he received donations which brought that total above $5,000. With the wars in Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone over, the U.N. had ended its mission in the camp, and the people who’d been marooned there, who had nothing and no one to return to in their native countries, had created de facto villages in its place. But they faced the same problems as before—a lack of safe water and no schooling for the children. They were also less than welcome in Guinean society, treated as outsiders and not allowed access to most government services. Sam’s first trip back to Guinea
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2017
lasted six months, and he discovered that little had changed. “Same as when I was living there, people had diarrhea, dysentery, parasites, and I knew the problem was water,” he says. “Bathing and doing dishes and drinking from the river, that’s how people get sick.” With the money he’d saved, Sam hired a local company to build a well that now provides clean water in the camp. His primary goal, however, was to provide education and a safe living situation for the orphaned children in
N’zerekore who, just as he’d experienced as a child, were not welcome in the local schools. Receiving no help or interest from Guinean officials, Sam decided to take matters into his own hands. He returned to America and, with the help of friends and former teachers, founded My Vision for Refugees, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization committed to improving the lives and prospects of the children, allowing them to stay together and attend school, while also having the support of each other, their teachers and house parents. In 2014, Sam married Mary Thompson, a native of Ghana who works for AT&T in Atlanta, and who now also serves as secretary of My Vision for Refugees, Inc. Sam divides his time between Guinea and Atlanta, overseeing construction and administrative needs in N’zerekore, and raising support for My Vision in America.
“Today, I am only able to do what I do because of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. We found hope here.” — Sam Johnson ’09 My Vision for Refugees Founder and President

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Sam Johnson ’09
entrepreneur | professional soccer player | guinea, atlanta I plan to spend 2017 in Guinea, taking care of the orphaned kids at Home of Hope and helping them with English. It is my wish to also encourage them to hold on to hope through Jesus Christ and provide them with emotional support, just like my mother kept our hope alive through her faith in Christ. My pet peeve is tardiness. The first thing I do when I get to “work” is to
thank God for the opportunities I’ve had and be grateful that I have a means to better myself and be an inspiration to refugees.
The thing I will remember the most about my time at HIES is the love and support the parents and staff showed me and my family. The best part about doing what I am doing today is the hope I give the former refugees and orphans my organization supports and the smile I see on their faces because of all we do for them. The food, clothing, education, medical care, etc. we provide for them makes such a big difference in their lives. This brings me a sense of fulfillment and happiness
to know that I am influencing them positively and helping them also have the opportunities to better themselves and be able to, in turn, help their community. In that way, I am helping to create a positive change in the world, one loving act at a time.
Use your gifts to make a positive mark on people’s
lives. Nothing is too little and positively influencing the life of even one person is a very big achievement.

I wish I had known how difficult it was going to be to set up the orphanage in Guinea. The government of Guinea gave me a tough time even though we had fulfilled the minimum requirements needed in Guinea and had all the legal documents as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization registered in the United States. This was very surprising to me because the orphanage was going to help the community so I could not grasp why some of the officials were making things difficult and trying to discourage me. I had some officials even tell me it was a waste of
time and they even went as far as telling me I was a fool for leaving my comfort zone in the United States and coming back. But knowing this ahead of time would still not have stopped me from setting up the orphanage. I wouldn’t have done anything differently, because it was my passion.
Whenever I’m playing soccer, it takes my mind off my worries and problems and I don’t think about them.
The soccer camp fundraiser for My Vision for Refugees at HIES was the highlight of the year for me. It was very exciting to let the kids know that they were serving though soccer because I had a couple of them asking me “Coach, how am I helping?” I explained that the camp was to support orphans in Guinea.” It felt good to see everyone having fun.

Welcome
Dear HIES Community,
I have seen so many positive changes to our programs and campus during my time at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. It is no embellishment to say that none of this would be possible without a strong, supportive community. I am in my 13th year at HIES, and my last child will graduate in May 2017, joining his sister and brother as members of the HIES alumni. It will be a different place for me, without my children on campus, but it is comforting to know HIES has prepared them for not only the challenges of the world outside 805 Mount Vernon Highway, but our school prepared them to take advantage of all the tremendous prospects that await in college and beyond. Though my school-day mornings will take on a different look and feel next fall, what keeps me excited about HIES are the endless possibilities just around the bend, the boundless opportunities to grow, to continue to improve and strengthen a school community that is already among the finest in the nation. In 2015, we opened the new STEM Building and received a $500,000 STEAM grant to hire a Director of STEAM and provide a budget to support the program. This year we have begun the development of a 10-15 year master plan of our campus. We are looking ahead. We are dreaming big. Nothing is off the table—as nothing should be beyond consideration at this point. And the remarkable advantage we have is that we are allowed to dream—to cast both a vibrant vision and a wide net—because those dreams are supported by a very real mission, and a very real community of teachers, students, athletes, artists, supportive parents and alumni, both home and abroad. Thank you for your continued, generous support of HIES. I am excited to bring you more details about our campus planning in the coming months. With gratitude,
Michele Duncan

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The HIES Parents’ Association supports and enriches the school’s academic and community programs, serving as a liaison to promote communication between the parents, administration, faculty and staff. In addition, Fundraising and Community Life committees marshal the resources, talents and efforts of hundreds of parent volunteers to provide the “extras” that enrich the lives of HIES students and our community. Last year, our Parents’ Association fundraisers were the Blame It On Rio! Gala, Tuition Raffle, Bear Benefits Card, Bingo Night, Bear WearHouse and Community Partners, which allowed us to give over $340,000 to the School to directly benefit HIES students. In addition to fundraising, our Parents’ Association also supports and funds the following for our HIES community:
GALA 2016 SPONSORS
Lorin and Matthew Middelthon
The Gala is the Parents’ Association’s premier school fundraiser and in 2016, we raised over $220,000. Thank you so much to our generous sponsors!

FINE ARTS ALLIANCE Founded in 2003, the Fine Arts Alliance (FAA) continues to grow through enthusiastic parent support. We are able to offer more ways than ever to support the arts garnering many accolades and awards for the HIES Fine Arts Department and its students. The Fine Arts Alliance organizes parent volunteers to support chorus, band, orchestra, drama, visual arts and media literacy programs. Parent volunteers assist in many areas including receptions, concessions, box office sales, field trips and events, such as the Open Mic Night and Film Festivals as well as the design and installation of the Christmas decorations around campus. One of the key highlights in 2015-2016 was the fourth year of our Fine Arts Alliance partnership with the High Museum of Art, providing numerous opportunities to HIES students, faculty, and the parent community. The Fine Arts Alliance raises funds through Balanced Excellence dues, concession and box office sales for four theatrical productions. The Alliance’s annual Wreath and Christmas décor sale and as well as a community-building movie night also contribute to our fundraising efforts. On February 25, 2016, the Fine Arts Alliance hosted the biennial Arts & Fashion Show “A Heart for the Arts.” It is the premier fundraising event for the Fine Arts programs at Holy Innocents’ and hosts more than 300 parents, friends, and faculty.

HORIZONS ATLANTA Horizons Atlanta at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School believes that every child, regardless of background, should have the same chance at having a positive impact on his or her community. Our sixweek academic enrichment program housed in the HIES Primary School and Upper School provides this opportunity to economically disadvantaged local public school students by eliminating critical barriers to success. Horizons students are challenged academically, socially, and physically through our Global Academy, a blend of project-based and service learning activities teaching each child how to be a productive global citizen. Horizons secures funding from local foundations, individuals, corporations, and community organizations. We are grateful to the Holy Innocents’ Parents Association for raising $12,518 through the Spring for a Cause Fun Run in April of 2016. In May of 2016, Horizons at HIES participated in Horizons Giving Day, a national effort to raise funds and awareness of the program. We surpassed our site’s goal of $26,000, thanks to many individual donations from the HIES community. The funds raised contribute to our operations and programming including our highly qualified staff, transportation, meals, field trips, and supplies. The program would not be possible without the support of the Holy Innocents’ community. Horizons would like to thank all of our volunteers, donors, and board members for their time, talents, and generous resources.

Alums Giving Back: Hank Wells ’07 serves as board member for the Horizons program at HIES.

Families Giving Back The Wells Family Embraces Horizons Summer Program
BY Christine Brodnan Site Director, Horizons Atlanta
The Wells family, Hank ’07 and Katharine ’07, and Tom ’02, have been involved in the Horizons program at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School since their years as students at HIES. Their mother, Louise Wells, Managing Partner at Morris, Manning & Martin LLP, began serving as a board member for the nonprofit based at HIES, in 2001. “Horizons has been a part of our family since the program began at HIES,” Louise said. “Tom volunteered for three summers beginning with the swimming program that first summer in 1999. Immediately, we all fell in love with the program and children.” Hank has fond memories of volunteering with Horizons alongside his twin sister, Katharine. “Each summer we would spend about 1-2 weeks with Horizons,” he said. “I loved it because I had an opportunity to do everything from helping with swimming classes to working individually with students who needed extra attention in reading.” Horizons is part of a national network of programs located on independent school and college campuses – the HIES site opened in 1999 and is one of eight local and 52 national sites. Serving economically disadvantaged local public-school students through a six-week summer enrichment program, Horizons exists to mitigate a phenomenon called the “summer slide” that significantly impacts economically disadvantaged students. “The underprivileged students we help are at a major disadvantage within the education system, and the statistics show that during the summer, kids often lose up to three months in critical reading and math skills,” Hank said. “Horizons effectively, every single summer, helps students avoid this summer slump – our results are incredible.” In 2016, the Horizons at HIES 3rd-8th graders gained, on average, 2.3 months of reading skills in just six weeks, according to the STAR assessment. Approximately 130 K-8th-grade students attended the 2016 summer program in HIES’s Primary School and Upper School buildings, with 58 current HIES high school students serving as classroom and swim volunteers. Hank visited several times this summer and was impressed with his experience. “One of the classes was leading a lemonade stand and learning how to manage a business and money,” he said. “The kids haggled
me (in the cutest way possible) to buy a ton of lemonade and were so excited when I did. Horizons goes way deeper than ‘summer school’ with aspects like this.” Horizons is designed to fuel a life-long passion for learning, blending high-quality academics with project-based and hands-on learning experiences. Horizons at HIES is a Global Academy, teaching all students what it means to be a global citizen. The lemonade stand was part of the program’s efforts to raise funds for My Vision for Refugees, the nonprofit orphanage that Sam Johnson ’09 started in Guinea. The global aspect to the program is one of Hank’s favorites, and he explains that the Global Academy connects students to worthy causes they might not have been aware of. “Kids were speaking with me about things like involvement at local senior living communities and raising money for Sam’s orphanage,” Hank said. “They banded together to raise money for the orphanage and their awareness of global poverty and Africa was truly amazing as a result.” After hearing Sam speak, the Horizons students and families were inspired and raised exactly $500 for the orphanage through various efforts including the lemonade stand. Two years ago after re-settling in Atlanta, Hank decided to join his mother on the Horizons at HIES site advisory board. He encourages fellow alums to get involved in Horizons and see the impact first-hand. “Please take a day off during the summer and come visit, volunteer and talk to our kids. Lunch with the kids is rewarding because they love speaking with adults,” he said. “If you can’t visit, donating is obviously a great way to get involved. We have an annual giving day and the community rallying around it is extremely important.” Every May, Horizons participates in an annual online giving competition, Horizons Giving Day, and our site raised approximately $25,000 in 2015 and 2016 thanks to the support of many HIES families. “I believe in this cause,” he said. Horizons is a great way for Holy Innocents’ to provide value to the community year round and also gives local students access to resources that their schools may not offer. Our resources would go untapped during the summer.” To learn more about Horizons at HIES, contact Christine Brodnan at christine.brodnan@hies.org.
