Welcome

Firstly congratulations on your engagement! Before you can start planning the details, you need to decide on and book your venue as this usually determines most other decisions around your wedding. As a county we are lucky enough to have a huge choice of venues - from stately homes to rustic barns, and bijoux pubs to luxury exclusive use hotels. You will find a list of your local venues on pages 23-26. Another great place to start your wedding planning is at wedding fairs. These give you the opportunity to talk to a whole room of wedding experts who will be able to guide you along those first steps, and a place to start making connections with potential suppliers. The first few months of the year are incredibly busy with wedding fairs so we have included a diary of fairs around the county on pages 80-81.

CHOOSING YOUR

WEDDING LOCATION By Nicola Le Couteur Bisson, Cornish Celebrants

There is so much choice for a wedding venue – how do you make your choice? It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed looking at brochures and websites for hotels, barns, stately homes, marquee fields, manor houses, farm houses, the choice seems endless and it’s so daunting – you are only going to do this once and you want it to be perfect.... This is where you need to stop and take a breath! It can be so easy to get carried away on a Pinterest perfect idea of what a dream wedding should be like. But your wedding belongs to you, and the weddings which are perfect are the ones which speak of the hearts of the couple at the centre of the day. So you and your partner in this – your beloved, your soulmate, the One – need to sit down and talk and talk and talk. What is your vision for the day – are you both coming up with the same ideas? One of the difficult things to talk about is “the budget” - its boring but essential you need to know how much you have to spend, for the entire day, not just the venue hire. Make a list of what is going to be important to you - Are you marrying in church, or other religious building? If so you need to talk to the Vicar, Minister, or other religious leader to see if it is possible (there are rules you need to follow to marry within a religious setting). Not religious? There are huge number of venues licensed by the various local authorities in England and Wales where you can get legally married by the Registration Service and have the rest of your celebration there too. Want a more personal celebration led by a Celebrant? Celebrants can lead a wedding celebration anywhere with the permission of the landowner, 12

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

just do the simple legal ceremony at the Register Office before the celebration day! So it comes to the two of you deciding what you want. The following may help you hone your ideas. Where do you see the ceremony taking place? Indoors, outdoors, in a woodland glade or with the backdrop of the sea, or with a beautiful house framed in the distance? Do you want to have your day all in one place, with a package including food and evening entertainment? A hotel, or a venue specialising in weddings may be the right choice for you. Do you like the idea of a more mix and match approach – choosing your own caterer and entertainment? Think marquees, tipis, barns, outdoor spaces. Got some land you can use? Think about a marquee or tipis, arrange your own catering, entertainment and day to suit you. Wanting a weekend event? Lots of venues now offer exclusive use weekends, arrive on the Friday with family and friends for a get together in the evening, wedding celebration on Saturday, with a relaxed brunch on Sunday before saying goodbye to everyone. Want to involve your community of family and friends in your celebration? Think of using local community spaces such as village halls – some have been recently refurbished to a high standard. Involve everyone in decorating the space, making bunting, table decorations, and friends to bring food for everyone to share.

Planning

Once you have narrowed down the type of venue you want in the area you want and ones that are within budget, start looking at websites and brochures, and arrange appointments to go and see them. Go and see at least 3 and then add another which is in a different category – for example 3 barn type venues and a hotel. This helps you to be sure that your initial choice of venue type is correct. After visiting all of the venues take another deep breath and sit down together and talk through each one – and hopefully one of them with be a standout for you. If none of them really speak to you, go back to the beginning of the process, and think about your vision for the day, and start again.

– it’s your day and the venue should feel right for you both.

HOW TO FIND

VENUE

IT’S 2020, A NEW YEAR AND YOU’RE ENGAGED! Finding the perfect wedding venue is likely to be at the top of any newly engaged couple’s list. With the venue playing a vital role in the success of your day, it’s a big decision you really need to get right. And there really is so much choice!

16

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Just like viewing a new property it is easy to become overexcited and fall in love with a place without checking the venue can cater to your requirements. The venue you pick will determine the number of guests you can invite, decor, suppliers, wedding date and have a big impact on your budget.

Planning

HERE ARE MY TOP 10 TIPS THAT WILL SET YOU ON THE RIGHT PATH TO FINDING A VENUE THAT SUITS YOU.

1. STICK TO YOUR BUDGET Yes, it’s true! Finding a gorgeous venue is possible, even on the smallest of budgets. Talk to your partner and decide on how much you’d like to spend on a venue. Viewing venues out of budget will never be an enjoyable experience.

2. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION One of the most important decisions you’ll make is where to position your wedding. You’re likely to have family and friends across the country (or perhaps across the world!), so choosing a location will be key to making sure everyone can attend. Consider elderly relatives who may not be able to travel very far or walk up stairs, or cliffs! and it might be worth looking somewhere with great transport/airport connections if everyone is coming from far and wide. Guests with children will appreciate a safe environment which is buggy friendly.

If all your female guests are a lover of stilettos, just remember that many venues in Cornwall can be on uneven ground!

3. TIME OF YEAR This is a really important one as the time of year can have huge impacts on many aspects of your wedding. Deciding what time of year you would like to get married and sticking to budget doesn’t always come easy. Getting married in the gorgeous sunshine can often come at a cost. Venues will be more expensive during peak seasons, as will some suppliers. If you want to get married outdoors, it is especially important to consider the season just as much as finding somewhere shelters and warm for an autumnal affair. silverlinings.co.uk

17

Planning

4. IS THE CAPACITY RIGHT FOR YOU? Deciding if you want an intimate or lavish affair is a really important decision to make straight away. Take into consideration the size of your guest list and what you want to achieve on the day. Make sure your venue can accommodate for your large party of 300, or has the perfect intimate ceremony space for you and your 10 guests.

5. WHAT’S INCLUDED AND WHAT’S NOT?

6. CHOOSE A VENUE THAT SUITS YOUR PERSONALITIES Every couple is unique so try and find a venue that represents each of your styles and tastes. Do you want a modern, rustic, elegant or stylist do. Do you and your partner love the outdoors? Maybe there is a sport you both love. If you are beach babes then there a numerous beach locations for the more relaxed environment. Keep in mind that whatever venue you chose will be a representation of you.

18

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

When booking an ‘all inclusive’ or ‘dry hire’ venue, it’s important to understand in advance what’s included and what’s not; is it full service or are you going to have to source tables, chairs etc? Are there any restrictions in place? For example; how late can you party? Can you have music outside? What areas of the venue are included, how long is the hire period, are there parking spaces, are there toilets or do these need to be hired in for the day, is there power, is there any accommodation or land for camping, how will the venue be presented on the day… right down to who clears away the rubbish the following morning!

Just remember DIY does not mean cheaper!

7. KEEP CONTROL Wedding venues that are overly pushy or even insistent on you using their preferred list of wedding suppliers is an instant disqualification. Majority of venue will want any couple to love them and make a decision based on their emotional connection, however there are many venues that want a sale, so make sure you ask as many questions of possible and take your time before booking.

Planning

8. MAKE SURE YOU GET ‘THE FEELING’! Like most items we buy we get ‘That feeling’ it’s right. You know when that feeling of butterflies appears in your stomach, and you can totally envisage yourself walking down the aisle in an unforgettable venue? That’s the feeling’, and it normally means it’s the perfect venue for you!

9. VISIT MORE THAN ONCE Always go and see your top venue choices two or three times before you make a decision. And there’s no rush to sign on the dotted line. Visit during different seasons or on a sunny or rainy day as this will give you a good idea of what can be achieved.

Visiting your venue will also give you the opportunity to get to know the team that work there.

10. IF IN DOUBT… HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER! Wedding planners are super experienced with venues and we welcome and thoroughly embrace them all. You’ll be surprised just how much a planner can save you in terms of time, stress and effort; we have the knowledge, the contacts, the time and the know how to make sure that your wedding is everything you want it to be. We’ll guide you through every step and will be a total support to you, your friends and family on the day – you still get all the best bits of wedding planning without any of the worry!

the venue can also influence your choice of wedding dress. Consider the formality of the venue, how the weather will affect it and the facilities. If you’re in a field then squeezing into posh portaloos in a huge meringue dress or dragging it through mud might not be sensible! by Caroline from Caroline Griffiths Wedding Planner carolinegriffiths.co.uk

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Interview

Why did you decide to become a chef? At the age of 14 I started working in a kitchen part time doing some washing up as a kitchen porter. I loved the excitement and buzz of the kitchen and the chefs all working together as a team. One Saturday I came in for my shift and one of the chefs was off sick. I was asked to step in, and the rest as they say is history! Where did you train? I did my training at Cornwall College. What does an Executive Chef mean? As well as the actual cooking and food service, I work closely with the Head Chefs to collaboratively write the seasonally changing menus. Being an Executive Chef means a lot of paperwork too! Is there a chef you admire most? I was really saddened to hear that Gary Rhodes recently passed away. As a young chef he was a real pioneer in the industry. Where do you think trends will go in the future? The classics are making a real comeback and I think they will continue to lead menus for some time. Great for those of us over 40! What dish are you bored of cooking/seeing on wedding menus? Buffets with lots of beige looking food. I love incorporating a bit of colour to a buffet. Saying this, there is still always room for a pasty or Cornish scone on a wedding menu. On the flip side, what are you currently making that you are excited about? We are striving to bring our Water’s Edge restaurant food to our wedding and function menus. It’s all about keeping things simple whilst including the same great produce sourced locally where possible, and applying the same innovative cooking techniques. Where do you source your ingredients? We always try to keep things as local as possible, as Cornwall offers such a wide variety of rich quality ingredients right on our doorstep. We only source away from the west country when no other options are available.

Interview

What practices do you have in place working towards sustainability, eco-friendly, etc.? I work closely with contacts made from spending over 30 years in Cornwall, often advising the suppliers and producers what is best for both the menu and the long term pressures on the environment and stocks. Top tip(s) for a couple choosing their wedding menu? Keep it simple! How flexible can you/the hotels be when creating a wedding menu? We offer packaged menus, as they are an essential guide to the customer and for the business, but we often meet with couples one-on-one and design bespoke menus. You cannot beat the personal touch, especially on such a big occasion. We are more than happy to accommodate and be as flexible as possible.

30

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

What is a good simple piece of advice for pairing wine and food? I would suggest just ordering what you like to drink – remember it is your big day. Oh, and order plenty! What’s the one ingredient you can’t live without? A tricky question as there are so many, but I do love local crab. What would you serve at your wedding? I got married some time ago now. We had burgers and fish with lots of fizz, and I think we would still choose the same if we could do it all over again. What do you do during your downtime? I love being outdoors. Walking and fishing are my two favourite past times when I’m not in the kitchen. Luckily Cornwall is the perfect location to enjoy both.

Planning

To create a cool casual wedding day which is still going to be memorable for you and your guests, firstly think about a venue that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. This might be at home with cosy tipis on the lawn or a ‘home from home’ rental house, like Tregulland Cottage, the venue for our photo shoot, where you can celebrate with the ultimate house party. It might be the beach with picnic blankets and BBQs. The local pub is becoming more and more popular as it’s a place many couples spend lots of time!

ANYTHING GOES! Jumpsuits, strapless sundresses, vintage lace with floaty sleeves, or tea-length dresses are all suited to a casual wedding. Ditch the heels and opt for trainers or flip flops. Give your bridesmaids the option to wear what they want, then use accessories to show their involvement in the wedding.

Planning

YOUR SEATING THROUGHOUT THE DAY BY USING CHAIRS AND SOFAS YOU ALREADY HAVE. Hay bales and picnic blankets give a relaxed feel to outside ceremonies, while giant cushions and beanbags are a comfy option inside. Bring colour into your wedding breakfast by using Director’s chairs with multicoloured fabrics. Go big and bold with foliage to give a spontaneously decorated look to long wooden tables and benches. Big sunflowers, bunches of daisies, or wildflowers all add to the nofuss look of a casual wedding. Embrace the odd drop of paint or scuffs to the tables, but if they do need covering use vintage lace, hessian cloths or colourful gingham.

IS A MUST FOR ANY COOL CASUAL WEDDING. Freshly made pizza, street food trucks serving ‘takeaway’ Thai food or hot jacket potatoes, feast on smokey BBQ meats cooked to order, or cram picnic baskets full of fresh bread, local cheeses and cold meats. Wash this all down with ice coolers of beer, wine on ‘tap’, or jugs of cocktails all things your guests can help themselves to as and when they want it. Churro vans or ice cream tricycles are a fun way to give your guests dessert or a late night sweet snack. Hire in a couple of water coolers to keep your guests hydrated. If you’re planning on doing things a little differently, communicate this through your invites. An information card is always helpful for guests to give them a feel for the day. Give your guests an outline of the day so they know if they need to have lunch or dinner before they arrive, what the dress code is, what is being provided for children, if there is a camping option... the more information, the better! Like most things in life, working with an experienced team is better than working alone. As a couple, we all feel stronger when we’re together than when we’re not. And this is very much the case with your wedding team of suppliers. You will find that by bringing a team of businesses together who work collaboratively on a regular basis will pay dividends on your wedding day. This is especially evident ‘behind the scenes’ when something goes wrong and everyone works together to put it right never have I heard “It’s not my job” when working with one of my teams! When looking for new suppliers, talk to your venue and other suppliers you’ve already booked and ask them for their recommendations. A photographer will recommend a videographer who won’t get in the way of their shots and vice versa. If you’re adding flowers to your cake, a cake maker will recommend a florist who will enhance rather than ruin. A caterer will recommend a bar company who will clear all the glassware, not just their own! Etc. etc...

Julie Ann from RoCha Design is constantly inspired by the outdoors, picking up colour palettes and ideas from nature. So this photo shoot was a perfect opportunity for Julie Ann to look to the sea at Mawgan Porth for inspiration to create the artistic stationery with hand painted stormy waves. Claire’s Sweet Temptations can design and make a cake as flamboyant as your imagination will take you, to the simplest designs complemented by driftwood, grasses and flowers as shown in the photo shoot. Not only will it look amazing, but with flavours ranging from coconut & lime to lemon & elderflower the cake will taste pretty scrumptious too. With The Park being such a family orientated venue, it is ideally suited to couples looking for a relaxed vibe to their wedding. Melody-Rose Hair Stylist and Design wanted to show off a boho look, keeping the bride’s hair loose but with plaits to still give a bridal look. The boho look was finished off by adding a delicate lace shrug from Anna D’Souza over the top of the Christine Trewinnard Couture dress. The whole shoot was bought together by Out Of The Ordinary Weddings by Hazel Parsons. If you’re struggling with your team, enlist the help of a professional wedding planner or wedding coordinator. They will use their experience to pull any team together and be able to understand where the issues are and how to smooth them out. The Park benefits from an in-house coordinating who will help guide the team on the day giving you a truly memorable experience. Having a team who work together and are all singing from the same hymn sheet will ultimately give you the piece of mind that your wedding day will go without a hitch!

This recent photo shoot at The Park at Mawgan Porth is a wonderful example of a collective coming together and producing something beautiful.

The Park, where the photo shoot took place, is a hidden gem just outside the hubbub of Newquay, and sits in the valley at Mawgan Porth. This truly is a venue for those looking to celebrate for the weekend...or longer! The award winning 5 star holiday park can accommodate civil ceremonies in a magical yurt village, our on-site restaurant, The Kitchen By The Beach or one of our three eco lodges with stunning balcony views. You can even have a blessing with the sand between your toes on the beach. So you and your guests can make a holiday of the wedding, choose from luxury lodges, cosy cottages, lavish yurts, and stunning cabins. Being a holiday park, the venue is a welcoming space for children and dogs, with lots of facilities to keep little ones entertained.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Tide Flowers designed the moongate backdrop to frame the incredible views rather than detract from them and focused on the textures of lots of lush green foliage. The whole look had an elegant surf vibe, using British grown orchids for the bouquet and table. Visit our website to view the I Do Film Weddings cinematic film of The Park and beach. Richard and his team have a huge amount of experience having worked on Downton Abbey, Poldark & Silent Witness to name a few. With a drone license, this enables them to capture the sweeping views of the beach and the tranquil gardens at The Park. And there is nothing more

fun to watch as their Marryokes where they make a music video featuring your favourite song being lip-synced by you and your guests! With The Park’s proximity to the sandy beach of Mawgan Porth, there is the option to have the Cornish Celebrants create your personal ceremony to include any combination of music, poetry and prose readings. While the ceremony isn’t legally binding (you would still need to do the legal bit at the registry office), to have a blessing with a bespoke ceremony script reflective of your unique combination of personalities gives you a beautiful way to celebrate your marriage.

BRIDAL WEAR Lace & Grace provided both my Saturday wedding dresses. I chose them because they were so accommodating and friendly, even being available for an extra last minute fitting before we travelled down to Cornwall. My Chinese wedding dress was from a Hong Kong market.

58

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

SUITS Andrew, Brendan, Greg and John from Clifton Suits were a great help in tailoring the suits to the wide range of shapes of the gents (and ladies) in the wedding party, and very helpful in seeing us multiple times and working with some of the guys who live overseas to get everything tailored to perfection.

FLOWERS We met with Anna to discuss our flowers and were just so impressed with how thorough she was and how much love she put into making everything perfect. She was able to create the wildflower effect we wanted perfectly, as well as design table flowers that could be used for both the Saturday and Sunday tables. Extra credit goes to Anna’s husband who very kindly helped set up a balloon arch on the Saturday morning! SEATING PLAN We absolutely loved Emmy’s designs when we saw them - they were so original and different. We chose to name each table after our favourite pairs – Cheese & Wine, Gin & Tonic, Poirot & Hastings etc! BRIDAL MAKEUP Jenna was completely amazing from start to finish. We loved the fact that all her products are cruelty free and environmentally friendly. She also did an amazing glitter bar for us in the evening that people loved so much (from children to our grandparents!). We had to ask her to stay an extra hour longer than planned which she was great about. CATERERS Richard McGeown was recommended by Tredudwell and his food was such great quality and elegant cuisine, whilst also being something that everyone could enjoy. Together with Sarah’s Pasty Shop, in Looe, he also created an amazing Hoisin Duck Pasty for our evening buffet, as a coming together of two of our cultures and favourite things!

For Saturdays’s theme and colour scheme we went for a navy blue, blush and gold colour scheme, with wildflowers to remind us of where we got engaged in Mongolia. We also wanted lots of English garden games like a coconut shy and croquet.

PHOTOGRAPHY We loved Paul’s photos when we saw them – they felt really personal with a way of focussing in on one or two people in the group. He was also more than happy to stay right into evening to take pictures of the questionable dancing that ensued!

We knew we wanted a venue somewhere in Cornwall as its where Rory’s family are from and it’s such a beautiful part of the country. We also knew we wanted a Chinese banquet with a tea ceremony to celebrate my heritage too. Tredudwell Manor was absolutely perfect; it felt quite intimate and we had the entire venue for the whole weekend. We also realised quite early on that there wasn’t a Chinese restaurant nearby that catered for groups as big as our wedding party, so we needed to bring in Chinese caterers and Tredudwell has amazing kitchen facilities and were so helpful!

TOP TIPS: Don’t worry about any of the small stuff – it doesn’t matter at all in the end! Our knife broke when we were cutting our cake, I fell through a deckchair in my wedding dress and Rory tried to put the wedding ring on the wrong hand but all we remember from the day was how wonderful it was to have all our favourite, best people all together.

CATERERS The most important part of any Chinese wedding is the food, and China fusion were able to come all the way from Poole to Cornwall to cater for our banquet, and still do traditional dishes like lobster noodles and roast duck!

For Sunday’s theme and colour scheme we went for a 1930’s Shanghai theme with lots of red, gold, vintage pieces and 1930’s music.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Real weddings BRIDAL WEAR I had seen my Hayley Paige dress on Instagram but couldn’t find anywhere locally who could get it for me. I searched around and came across a boutique in Leeds who had ordered the dress for another bride but was then cancelled - lucky me!

I work with Emily at The Falmouth, and aside from being our spa manager she is also a qualified makeup artist. I knew after a trial with her that she was the one to create my perfect look. Her attention to detail, listening to what look I wanted to achieve and the final result was more than I could have asked for.

Real weddings RECEPTION VENUE The key thing for us was that we didn’t want a standard sit down meal and we knew The Falmouth Hotel could accommodate this. We worked with Chris (Head Chef) and Sam on a big buffet so our guests could have as much or as little as they wanted to, along with plenty of choice. We also wanted somewhere where we didn’t have to have the room changed around for the evening. So we used the Castle Beach restaurant for our Wedding Breakfast and the Ballroom was set up and ready to go as soon the meal and speeches were finished. It also meant we didn’t have to worry about timings as much as the evening guests were able to arrive and have a drink in the Ballroom.

TOP TIPS: Once the day arrives, stop thinking or worrying about anythin g that’s not right or you’ve forgotte n - just enjoy the day for what it is.

The amount of photos tak en can be frustrating but go with it - after the day ends you will be so happy you had them taken.

Real weddings CAKE Our cake had to taste delicious as well as look amazing! After I contacted Charlotte, she dropped off a big box of flavoured cupcakes for us to try and from there we were able to pick flavours for each tier. We also wanted something a little quirky so Charlotte bought pipettes which were then filled with Baileys to enjoy along with the Baileys tier. And as a surprise Charlotte made the inside of the cake leopard print!

FLOWERS Our friend recommended Fenella and she worked with the gardner from Trebah Gardens to create the look I wanted. PHOTOGRAPHY I’ve known Leo Sharp for years as he was the magazine photographer from a previous job. First and foremost he’s a lovely guy! We love his style and given his other photography involves photographing professional skateboarders, he is used to capturing the moment at a pace. So many of our guests commented on how attentive he was and we have such a wonderful record of the whole day, our family and our friends. ENTERTAINMENT A soloist from the church choir sang sang Leona Lewis ‘A Moment Like This’ as I walked down the aisle with bridesmaids which was absolutely incredible. Perfect Party provided the DJ who was outstanding especially given that we hadn’t decided on our first dance until we were literally asked to take to the dance floor! We knew we wanted live music for the majority of the night and the fabulous The Rocket Men, fronted by the fabulous Woody, didn’t fail to keep the dance floor packed! Cakes

WITH AWARD WINNER CLAIRE FROM SWEET TEMPTATIONS Wedding cakes, yum! They are one of the big centrepieces of your wedding, and one of the most photographed after THE dress. And yet I still find that it’s one of the last things to be booked. I often get asked at wedding shows when the cake should be booked? And my answer is always the same, as soon as possible! Really as soon as you’ve booked the venue and have a rough idea of guest numbers, especially if you want something bespoke. And the best cake makers get booked up way ahead - I’ve already taken bookings for 2021. But, I hear you cry, how do I choose a cake maker? And how do I choose a cake? Firstly go to wedding shows and fairs in your wedding area where you’ll get the chance to meet lots of local suppliers. This will give you the opportunity to not only see their work, but talk to them too. Most cake makers also offer consultations and tastings where you can go and meet, chat, design and taste cake. Usually there’s a small charge for this service. Word of mouth is another good way to find your cake maker. Your venue may have recommended suppliers they like to work with. As with everything else, research is key. And what about the cake itself? Now this is the fun bit! My advice? Have whatever you want - it’s that simple. The cake is a great opportunity to really go for it, express yourselves and have some fun. And you don’t have to have decided exactly what you want before you book your cake either, a good cake maker will work with you and help you get it just right. We have years of experience with hundreds of weddings, so talk to us, pick our brains, it’s part of our job. 70

Does size matter? (stop giggling at the back!) Yes, the size of the cake will make a difference to its cost, so it’s something you need to discuss with your cake maker. You don’t need to know the size of cake, simply tell us the number of guests you’re expecting, and we’ll work that out for you. Also tell us if you want to serve the cake as dessert or as smaller servings (i.e. favours), as this will affect the size of cake you’ll need. Do you want a big cake to WOW, but don’t have many guests? Then have some dummy tires instead of costly cake. On the flip side, you can also have plain cutting cakes for extra servings if you have lots of guests but don’t want a huge cake.

There are many ways to get exactly the wedding cake you have always dreamed of, and it shouldn’t be stressful. Enjoy having your cake and eating it!

Quick, what’s the first thing you think of when you hear, “wedding planning ”? Chances are that images of dresses, venues or flowers come to mind. Blame years of Yes to the Dress episodes or the near right of passage that assembling a wedding Pinterest board has become: we all tend to prioritize the most visual wedding elements.

Walking down the aisle, your first dance, and your dinner and reception music are all a chance for you and your partner to really shine as the unique couple you are. Your wedding tells a story. And every good story needs a soundtrack.

BUT WHAT ABOUT MUSIC?

MUSIC SPEAKS TO THE HEART If you’re putting together some musical ideas for your wedding, a good place to start is to think of the main emotion you’re trying to encourage and sustain. You might decide your Bohemian beach wedding needs peaceful, lilting music that will help everyone feel relaxed. Perhaps you and your partner are just two big kids at heart, and want plenty of playful, feel-good oldies. Or maybe your love story is big and bold, and you want your guests to Party with a capital P.

While it’s tempting to spend a lot on the reception hall, the food and the decor, the honest truth is that these things don’t have as big an impact on your guests’ enjoyment as music does. Music is powerful stuff. Nothing else can affect mood like the right music. Do you want your guests to get up and dance? To share a tender moment during the ceremony? Maybe even shed a tear as you walk down the aisle to a song your late father used to love? Music can do all that. It’s such a big deal that there’s even an academic discipline dedicated to studying music’s effects on our moods. Not to mention the music therapists and Mozart-listening plants out there! When you have such a wonderful palette to work with, why not get creative?

MUSIC IS YOUR CHANCE TO BE UNIQUE Don’t feel you have to go with what’s popular. Remember that music can be tailored to fit you just like your wedding dress can. If that song you love is too long to walk down the aisle to, you can cut out the middle part. If the lyrics for that pop song feel too informal for your first dance, you can remove them. And if you and your partner’s special song would work so much better with different instruments, well, why not swap the guitars for cellos? If you need some help bringing your vision to life, music producer David Griffiths can re-record your favourite songs, changing the instruments, style or vocals to suit you. Working with a producer isn’t as expensive as you’d think — costs start from just £200 for music to walk down the aisle, have your first dance or give speeches to. By tailoring the right mood around the music you love, you can totally transform your day into something people will really remember. silverlinings.co.uk

TOP TIPS FROM WEDDING INDUSTRY BUSINESSES

VENUE: SYDNEY FROM ST IVES HARBOUR HOTEL Try to relax especially the day before your wedding. Many couples can feel quite overwhelmed the day before the big day after all you’re getting married and at this point there is nothing more you can do. It’s important to take some time out to breathe so that you can enjoy every moment of what you have been planning.

Make sure you handover all you can and surround yourself in a calming environment. St Ives Harbour Hotel has a fabulous spa that does the job perfectly!

VIDEOGRAPHY: RICH FROM I DO FILM WEDDINGS Wedding videography has come a long way since ‘Uncle Bob’ was filming weddings, with a huge camcorder on his shoulder, held with his shaky hands whilst getting in everyone’s way. You can now get cinematic footage that shows your personal love story on the best day of your life. Your wedding video can capture different parts of your day that you never saw. Including big moments like your morning preparations, service, speeches and your first dance to smaller easily-missed details like laughing relatives and your dancing gran.

At the end of your wedding, everyone stops dancing, the food gets eaten, everything hired gets returned, but the wedding video will allow you to relive your special day for the rest of your life. BRIDAL: HAILEY FROM COASTAL BRIDAL We’ve met hundreds of brides since Coastal Bridal began in 2015 and the main thing that I always encourage brides to do is to choose the gown that they themselves are the most excited about, which dress makes them feel the most confident and beautiful, which dress they cannot wait to wear! Of course all brides want the agreement of their entourage but ultimately it’s their dress and their day, and their entourage will only want the bride to be happy!

DJ: ALLAN FROM DJ SERVICES CORNWALL There are 3 things I would ask:

1

Check for any restrictions on noise levels, particularly hotels. I’ve had hotel management asking to turn the music down at 9 pm due to other hotel guests.

2

Make sure your Wedding DJ is happy to take a suggested playlist of tracks you wish to hear, and equally that they know what tracks you don’t want to hear.

3

If it sounds too cheap, your alarm bells should ring! Unfortunately, we receive weekly requests by couples who have been let down by their wedding DJ.
