Welcome
in this issue... Wow, what a difference 3 months makes. Since our last magazine came out in April, we have all experienced the huge effect COVID-19 has had and will continue to have on our lives.
REGULARS 6 Information on wedding fairs
21 Cornwall wedding venues
We have seen weddings postponed and cancelled, but also heard stories of couples making the most of their would be wedding day with virtual weddings using Zoom to have a blessing involving their friends and family, to couples getting dressed up and reading their vows to each other with their children or furbabies as witnesses. Whatever you’ve decided to do, it’s a day that should be marked with joy, not sorrow.

For those newly engaged, you may find that your wedding planning takes on a different feel to how you imagined. More couples are moving away from the traditional wedding day to a day that reflects your personalities in a bigger way. Smaller guest numbers allow for budgets to be spent in different ways and on the elements which really matter to you. If you don’t find what you’re looking for in our magazine, head over to www.silverlinings. co.uk and check out our Wedding Directory for a comprehensive list of local wedding professionals. You’ll also find wonderfully inspiring blogs and practical planning downloads. Planning your wedding is a huge task but using all of the resources available - magazines, websites, blogs, wedding fairs - will make the process easier and fun!

Advice WHAT TO DO ABOUT YOUR
What a time this is for everyone in the ‘Wedding World’ at the moment. The hearts of all of us in the Wedding Industry go out to all our couples who are trying to decide what to do for the best. Since lockdown began back in March, so many couples have found their plans in total disarray and began the dispiriting business of trying to re-organise their day, contacting venues, and suppliers to see what other dates are available to them. Some have chosen to look towards the autumn and winter of this year, whilst others have tried to get a date close to the one already chosen – often for a special reason – for next year.
We know that some couples are planning to go ahead with their legal ceremony as soon as they are able to, and will then celebrate in style with a celebrant-led ceremony on their wedding day. 2021 is going to be a busy one! So we thought it would be a good idea to have a look at some ideas to put the zing back into your planning and turn your disappointment into something else a joyful memory.
Sometimes this has meant some compromise – weekdays rather than Saturdays are becoming popular and are often economical, and more importantly they have more availability.
How weddings will be in the future is debatable – no one knows when rules will be completely relaxed and we can return to ‘normal’, perhaps social distancing is something that we will just have to get used to. Whatever the outcome is, there is no disguising the sheer heartache that couples are feeling at the moment. 10

Advice

You may have seen some couples marking their ‘Would be Wedding Day’ with a Zoom ceremony – not as a way of getting married formally, but as a way of celebrating the day that was supposed to be! Some couples have chosen to have a handfasting ritual – promising themselves to each other for a year until their wedding day actually comes around. Others have chosen to write vows to say to one another, and have then sealed these in a jar – often decorated with ribbons and a date stamp – to be reopened and read at their wedding. This is such a lovely way of connecting the two ceremonies. Obviously the delay in getting married can have a huge effect, will elderly relatives still be able to attend in a years’ time? Even as the pandemic restrictions begin to dissipate, the more elderly and vulnerable may feel too nervous to attend a wedding with lots of guests. A Zoom ceremony can enable everyone to enjoy the sight of the couple pledging their love to each other. Some couples have gone further and have invited families to write their thoughts and wishes to them, place them in an envelope and send them to the couple to be displayed on a wishing tree during their wedding day. Couples with children have chosen a very special ritual – the child and the couple are given blank pieces of a jigsaw, and asked to colour it or write something on it as part of the Zoom ceremony, then at the future wedding day they will be
asked to complete the jigsaw, all the pieces put together with love as a wonderful keepsake. There are so many fabulous ideas, all it needs is imagination and the willingness to think outside the box. In this way the day that ‘would have been’ becomes a link in the planning for the new wedding day, and will never be forgotten. We have teamed up with some fellow suppliers and created Get Wed Online (www.getwedonline. com) offering a bespoke ceremony service (@CornishCelebrants) edited video highlights (@idofilmweddings) and some great photography (@VerityWestcott), together with some brilliant planning advice (@HazelParsons) and we have to mention our website and social media guru Marie who runs Eeek! It has been a lot of fun, and, importantly all of our couples have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of marking this ‘would have been’ day. Obviously, a Zoom ceremony may not be for everyone, but whatever you do, at the very least, keep your romance alive and do something special on the ‘would be wedding day’ and look forward to the excitement of your wedding when you say “I do” to each other in front of family and friends in person.

Charlestown is a historic, beautiful harbour on the south coast of Cornwall. It’s the last open 18th Century Georgian harbour in the UK and a UNESCO world heritage site. As well as being a vibrant working port, with the tall ships and lovely coast, it has played home to the iconic Poldark series. Although open to the public to enjoy Charlestown Harbour is actually privately owned, and recently acquired the licence to hold weddings on the Harbour. What a memorable and beautiful place to get married. The Round House, found at the end of the East side of the harbour, offering sweeping views across St Austell Bay, is licensed and can hold an intimate service with witnesses.
There is the wonderful tall ship Kajsamoor, which is moored in the Inner Harbour, it isn’t licensed but can hold receptions for up to 50 guests. This beautiful ship was built in Norway in 1939 and has had star appearances in the Poldark series. This location is simply stunning: steeped in maritime history, breath taking views, has wonderful eateries and is a photographer’s dream. Weddings will be exclusive hire with only a limited number a year, from September 1st 2020. charlestownharbour.com silverlinings.co.uk

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Planning
Planning a wedding is a big enough job at the best of times but in the middle of a global pandemic? You, along with many couples are probably in a complete logistical turmoil! As the uncertainty of the COVID-19 virus is felt by everyone and the government closed wedding venues, many are experiencing their wedding to be postponed or cancelled until next year and beyond. There is no denying the Coronavirus is having a huge impact on the world, economy and wellbeing of society so it’s totally natural to be concerned about your wedding plans.
Even if you have your venue sorted, the effects of Coronavirus certainly highlights the lack of control you can have when it comes to your own wedding so marquee and outdoor weddings are definitely going to be a popular choice for many. Having the flexibility to change location if needed is always a good backup, especially when Coronavirus could start to have an effect on venues and their ability to remain open. For example reducing the guest numbers, moving to a larger function room, having more outdoor focus or adding a marquee extension.
With this in mind, now might be a great time to consider an outdoor, tipi or marquee wedding, as you can have greater control of the environment around you and your wedding. Marquees can, of course, be erected in a variety of locations, including your own garden if you have space!

Planning Coronavirus aside, marquee weddings have always been a fantastic way to celebrate with little restrictions so if you are planning an outdoor/marquee wedding, here are 5 ways to start the planning process!
Marquee weddings in Cornwall have always held a special place in my heart. Living in beautiful Cornwall with coastlines and country views there is no wonder why couples choose to pitch up and create something utterly amazing with a view that is breathtaking! They are incredibly personal and the concept of creating your own wedding venue, to your own specifications and making it a real reflection of your own style and personalities is pretty awesome right!
1. A MARQUEE BUILT ESPECIALLY FOR YOU
2. A BLANK CANVAS TO CREATE YOUR OWN THEME
Marquee companies have really raised the bar when it comes to what can be achieved with no two marquee weddings quite the same. Unlike the restrictions of a room in a hotel or ready-made wedding venues where one-size must fit all, the marquee size will be tailored to suit your exact needs, to suit the number of guests you are going to have to give you a marquee built for you, making it unique for your wedding day.
When it comes to planning your wedding it’s the little details that really makes it unique, so as well as considering the exterior of your marquee you will obviously want to think about how the interior will be decorated too. I love outside, marquee weddings! You can be as creative as you like with themes and colours, from modern styles, or classic, vintage or beach feel. As weddings are becoming more and more alternative the options are endless and the choice is all yours!
Now you have space – what can you do with it? First, you get to choose the interior that suits your style – we have lots of different variations, from hire furniture to marquee fairy lights and interior roof linings. Then you get to create a layout that optimises your location and perfectly suits your ideas for your day. From the position of the reception area and the bar to the dining and dancing areas, the vision is yours to create. And if you’re stuck, your marquee company or wedding planner has lots of ideas!

Planning
3. FEWER RESTRICTIONS
4. YOUR BUDGET
As a wedding planner, I struggle with restrictions! So when couples come to me to help create something wonderful for them, working with a blank canvas is a huge luxury and super exciting! Having fewer restrictions is my green light for a huge amount of creativity but it can also be as simple as more guests and a more relaxed itinerary. When it comes to the logistics you can really go to town.
A marquee wedding can be very cost-effective if you are working with guests in the hundreds, but don’t underestimate the hidden costs that can occur when you are working from a blank canvas. Choosing a marquee will mean you only pay a fixed cost depending on the size of the marquee so you will need to bear in mind your catering will usually be a per head cost.
Why not have a wedding during sunset! (Can you tell I’m getting a little excited). Restrictions on numbers, timings, locations and logistics will all be for you to decide if you opt for an outside or marquee wedding so if you are a couple that wants a completely bespoke wedding then this route is perfect for you!
When allocating your budget to everything required I would recommend leaving a little bit over as there are always those cheeky hidden costs that can bump up any budget!
5. CHOOSING YOUR OWN SUPPLIERS Although it is great that some venues offer a recommended suppliers list they may not be the suppliers you had envisaged. Choosing your own caterer, for example, means you get to choose exactly what you want to eat, rather than settling for a set menu. From street food to hog roasts, black tie and sit down dinners there is a huge range of amazing caterers in Cornwall all waiting to tickle your taste buds. Using local and Cornish produce will also give your guests something to talk about and your wedding guests will certainly not go hungry!
FINAL WORD...INSURANCE With any wedding, insurance is a definite must! But even more so with an outdoor/ marquee wedding. Coronavirus has certainly highlighted the importance of insurance. Just like any other asset, it is there to protect your investment including deposits, down payments, venue, suppliers and much more.

TOP 10 TO ASK A WEDDING VENUE TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO ‘SURPRISES’ FURTHER INTO YOUR WEDDING PLANNING! 1. How long will you provisionally hold a date for? 2. If the venue isn’t Exclusive Use, who else could be there on my wedding day? 3. Is there a sound limiter for the DJ, or restrictions on a band? 4. Are there any restrictions on decor? 5. Is VAT included in the prices quoted? 6. How much is the deposit to secure our date? 7. Will there be someone from the venue present on our day? 8. What is your cancellation policy? 9. 3D Renders and virtual tours are predominantly used in the real estate business and the automotive industry. You get a sense of scale, design and look of your potential new home or vehicle without it even being built and showcase designs in pre-production. We have brought this technology to the wedding industry and can now design your complete wedding, or part of it, with 3D photo-realism so you can see how your wedding will look without even visiting the venue.
26
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
3D renders are proving popular with the wedding industry, and even more so given the current climate, for clients who are designing their wedding but would like to visualise their ideas before their special day. It’s a perfect way to fine-tune your styling and see what works with what, make sure it all works together and also gives your vendors a physical image to work with, preventing any miscommunication issues on the day.
Planning
So how does 3D rendering and VR work? We work with clients, planners and venues and we listen to your ideas and build your design entirely from the ground up, from chairs to styling to the florals, lighting and seating styles, and we put it together to scale within your venue, marquee or event space. We can also design part of your wedding, for example, a table design, wedding cake, wedding altar or a custom piece of work you are thinking of incorporating. We have designed full scale 3D renders within venues and marquees, and also individual pieces like reception tables, speciality bars, custom signs and ceremony set ups so they can give you a 3D view of how it will look. Weddings can be stressful, and we know many clients can feel anxious as to how the completed look will come together on their special day; therefore, 3D renders take away that anxiety and stress. You can put together different colours, different florals or different styles so you can then decide which is your preferred look for your special day. Adding to this service, we also provide 360 VR walkthrough, which takes your 3D photo realistic renders to the next level. Walkthroughs allows you to look into the 3D design with a feeling of actually being in the venue. Using a free app on your phone or tablet, you can move the image around and look up to your lighting and look around at the whole set up and see for example where all the tables will be set or how your ceremony will be set up. As you move around your image moves with you. We set everything to scale using the actual event space measurements and in the current climate we can actually design your ceremony or reception taking into account any social distancing regulations so you can relax in the knowledge that your requirements will work.
Our 3D Render and Visualisation is a service not just offered to our clients but also other planners and venues looking to market how a wedding will look.

Micro weddings are similar to a small wedding but will have less than 20 guests. Small and micro weddings tend to fall into the same bracket as both will have many elements of a larger wedding. Elopements, on the other hand, tend to have a secretive air about them, without many of the traditions or extensive planning. Of course, these are sweeping statements and not true for all elopement, micro and small weddings! Small weddings are at the forefront of many couples’ minds given the current requirements to social distance at any event. The fewer the numbers, the easier it is for your venue to adequately accommodate social distancing. But off the back of this, many couples are now favouring the idea of a more simple approach to their wedding.
FOR BUDG CONSCIOUET COUPLES S Small wedding s give couples a reason to cu t back on num bers and not have the pressures from family to invi te relatives th ey haven’t seen or had contact with for years.

FOR LESS BUDGET CONSCIOUS COUPLES, PAYING FOR LESS PEOPLE TO AT T END MEANS YOU CAN SPLASH OUT ON F INE DINING AND OPULENT VENUES, PLUS OPENS UP NON-T RADIT IONAL VENUES LIKE PUBS AND RESTAURANTS T HAT WOULD ORDINARILY BE TOO SMALL FOR LARGER WEDDINGS. And while not worrying about guest numbers pushing up the budget, small weddings can truly allow a couple’s individual personality to shine through in all the details. Couples spend a huge amount of time and money planning their wedding to the minutest detail but miss so much of the day, being pulled from one guest to another, from one photo to another. Being the ‘belle of the ball’ is usually a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many brides, but for many more it isn’t a comfortable thought. Small and micro weddings allow couples to celebrate their marriage without having the pressure of being in the spotlight. Disadvantages - ok, there are always going to be disadvantages to everything! The biggest one for small and micro weddings is the family (usually) and friends who didn’t get an invite. So first and foremost, be sure this is the right decision for you. Social media can be a funny thing so be mindful when posting photos; help those offended by showing how private it was. Choosing a small venue can also help friends to realise it was impossible to invite all. But remember, it is your wedding and you cannot please everyone - just ensuring it’s what you want is the most important thing. Cornwall is blessed with an abundance of wedding venues ideally suited to small and intimate weddings, many of which offer perfectly put together packages to make your wedding planning easy and fun.

Micro weddings can be a day, a weekend, or even a week of celebrations. If you’re not catering for hoards of guests, the budget can be used to spend quality time with your nearest and dearest, giving you all an experience like no other. Micro weddings don’t have any hard and fast rules about them - in fact they are largely about throwing the rule book out! Traditions we are all used to seeing at weddings don’t necessarily happen, with couples choosing to spend their budget on the elements that matter most to them. This could be renting a luxurious manor house with plenty of accommodation for all, or bringing in a top class chef to lay on an extravagant wedding breakfast.

YOU’ LL ONLY HAVE A HANDF UL OF INVIT ES TO SEND, SO SPLASH OUT ON OPULENT OR QUIRKY STAT IONERY.
How’s this for a plan - you and your guests arrive at your venue on Friday and enjoy a lavish BBQ but remembering you need an early night! Wake up together the following morning to a hearty breakfast with your family and friends, all sitting around the table talking about the exciting day ahead. Make your vows in front of those people who matter to you most, then enjoy a champagne fuelled afternoon playing games, taking a walk down to the beach for ice creams, or just relax with your family with no pressures to be anywhere or do anything. Finish the day with a sumptuous dining experience with your own personal chef and waiting staff, catered for you at your venue. The following day is all about chilling - exploring the land around you, lazing on the beach - before returning home and to normality after a glorious weekend celebrating.
IF YOU’ RE MAKING A WEEKEND OF IT, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER ON HAND TO DOCUMENT T HE WHOLE WEEKEND SO YOU DON’ T MISS CAPT URING ALL T HE MEMORABLE MOMENTS.
Think hand painted, vellum, ribbon, wax seals and calligraphy. Add personalised designer biscuits to the package. Or go for quirky invites on tea towels or make a jigsaw puzzle. If your micro wedding is a little more secret then have an invite that can only be viewed with 3D glasses. With just a handful of guests you can push the boat out and give the whole wedding party an experience: -B ring in a sommelier for wine pairing along with your a la carte menu -H ave a treasure hunt with proper treasure to find -U se a silhouette artist to capture your guest’s profiles -F or the film buffs, create an outdoor experience with oversized bean bags and cushions, popcorn and slush puppies - complete with an usherette to top up the treats!

REMEMBER
WIT H C LOSER TO 50 GUESTS, A SMALL WEDDING IS A ‘ HAPPY COMPROMISE’ BET WEEN A MICRO WEDDING AND A LARGER WEDDING.
The legal part can be done anytime before or after a ceremony. I w ould always recommend do ing it beforeha nd so when you ha ve your blessi ng you know you are also legally joined together .
Couples opting for a small wedding will usually want to keep many of the traditions of a larger wedding, with their own personal twist. But with more guests than a micro wedding there is some requirement to keep to an order of the day so guests know what they need to do and when. So how can you make your small wedding different? Being able to pick different venues means you can really think outside the box when it comes to choosing a venue with a smaller capacity. What about a boat? Or a famous harbour side? High up in a treehouse? A Napoleonic fort? Or even subterranean lake? With a small number of guests there really is no limit to the type of wedding venue open to you. Be mindful that some venues will swallow up a small wedding, so consider how decorations could make the venue feel more intimate by lowering ceilings using drapes and lighting or adding soft furnishings to create ‘quiet areas’ which also soak up echos. Some venues may not be able to accommodate exclusive use, so you could have the general public as bystanders to your wedding celebration. When it comes to your ceremony, who said everyone has to be seated? A legal ceremony or a celebrant-led blessing can be as short as 10 minutes, so even the laziest among us can stand up for that amount of time! Or have everyone seated but place the chairs around you, forming a circle of love. A celebrant-led blessing also opens up many more venues for you to declare your love for each other, which is the reason you are all together.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Planning
However you decide to make your small or micro wedding a uniquely magical experience, the key point is about keeping it small to spend time with your loved ones, to spend money on what is important to you, and not be tied to wedding traditions that don’t suit your personalities.
IT’ S EASIER TO CAT ER FOR F EWER GUESTS TOO. GIVE YOUR GUESTS MORE F REEDOM TO EAT WHEN T HEY CHOOSE BY USING FOOD T RUC KS, ALLOWING GUESTS TO GRAB SOME ART ISAN PIZ ZA OR SEAFOOD PAELLA T HROUGHOUT T HE AFT ERNOON AND INTO T HE EVENING. Do you need a bar when you can load up barrels and crates with ice and beers? Don’t forget to have someone around to replenish and clear away as you go nothing worse than having to come back the following day to clear up!
The guest list for a small wedding is more likely to be family and friends who you know well, so adapt your wedding to what you all love doing. If you’re not into dancing, consider finishing the wedding after your wedding breakfast, allowing you to make the most of a luxurious hotel for the evening. If you love music, splurge on different types of music and bands throughout the day - a mini music festival! If drinking is your thing, have a mixologist to be on hand to create bespoke cocktails, or have a selection of single malt whiskeys for the connoisseurs. Little touches that become too costly or time consuming with lots of guests become more doable with small numbers. Use photos of your guests to create your seating plan and their place card. Individual menu cards for each place, personalised to their menu choice. Make your own scent and have this infused into candles for the tables and a favour. Offer around Cuban cigars later in the evening to enjoy with a vintage port. Give your guests a hangover kit, perfect for the following morning! And if your venue allows for it, get everyone back the following day for the ultimate hangover cure - a big English breakfast fry-up. It’s also a good opportunity to eat up more of the cake leftover from the day before!

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Real weddings
We wanted to get married in Cornwall as we both have the best memories of holidays in the area. After days of rain, we woke up on 17 August 2019 to a beautiful day. We were staying at Place House, near St Anthony’s Head. We chose Place for us to stay and host our reception as it really is an incredible, one of a kind place! The house is private, but it has its own chapel which is usually open to visit. If you’ve been to St Mawes, you’ll have seen this magical looking house from across the bay. We could house our bridal party in the beautiful main house, with other family and friends staying in the cottages on site. On the morning of the wedding, we had a great time getting ready with Carly (aka The Big Day Stylist on Instagram) and Stacey Cremin MUA. They’re both incredible women who helped us look our best for the big day. My bridesmaids were dressed in Victoria Lou Bridal, and I wore Suzanne Neville. My Dad got me to the church on time in a MBG roadster we hired as a surprise from him from Perranwell Classic Car Garage. It was perfect for the little Cornish roads and such a fun way to get to the church! We have friends who are renovating a boathouse in Bohortha (@bohorthaboathouse) who tipped us off to St Just in Roseland church. We loved the welcoming atmosphere at St Just, and really enjoyed our time getting to know the church and parish in the run up to our wedding

Real weddings The church is absolutely beautiful, by the water, with the most spectacular gardens. It’s well worth a visit. Our ceremony was beautiful, with friends playing me down the aisle, and singing through the signing of the register alongside the Roseland choir. After the ceremony, it was back to Place for the party to begin. Dylan, the estate manager of Place, was incredibly helpful about hooking us up with local suppliers. Place is remote, and we needed to take this into account when planning the food and drink we wanted to serve.
We were so lucky to find David, aka Sizzlegrills, an Asado specialist who could cook up an amazing feast for 90 outside. He cooks over fires, which was a great spectacle for our guests. The Sizzlegrills team cooked up incredible canapes, including scallops, for our guests on the lawn of Place, by the sea. For the main event, Sizzlegrills served up dramatic displays of mackerel, chicken and steak, accompanied by roasted veggies and salad. Our guests repeatedly tell us it was the best wedding food they’ve ever had, and we agree! Serve Cornwall had a great team of waiters keeping our guests with a drink in hand - we brought in our own drinks from Naked Wines and St Austell Brewery. Glasses and crockery (and the best mobile loos I’ve ever seen!) came from Abbotts. So our guests were very well entertained whilst Dan and I had our photos taken by the excellent Paul Keppel. We really liked Paul’s natural style, getting the best out of those of us that don’t naturally like having our photos taken! Afterwards, our best man had organised a surprise aerial display from a former Red Arrow pilot. Corinne Davis pulled off the most spectacular display over St Mawes’ bay. When we headed into our beautiful Cornish Tent Company Sailcloth marquee for dinner, I was blown away by how fabulous it looked. We’d decorated the tables with flowers from the Flower Shed in Trebilcock, who also created the most beautiful bouquets and button-holes for the bridal party. My eyes went straight to our Wedding Cake, which Debbie from Red Robin Pantry had created for us. I’d been so excited about working with Debbie, as she offers dessert tables, which we’d not come across before. 42
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Real weddings
Debbie created the most amazing spread of all our favourite things, including cheesecakes, marshmallows and chocolate tarts. Our wedding cake was spectacular we loved the process of choosing flavours for each tier with Debbie and the cake was demolished by our guests, who raved about it! The cake that was uneaten on the day went down a treat the next day with our family and friends staying on with us. After a spectacular dinner and dessert, we had our speeches, followed by dancing courtesy of DJ in Cornwall. We had fireworks over the water, arranged as another surprise by our bestman and Dylan. The music played and the bar flowed til midnight, when we sadly had to call it a night.
Our wedding day surpassed our expectations in every way, and we couldn’t have asked for more from all our lovely local suppliers!

Mother of the bride
Musings of a prospective Mother of the Bride! Being a mother has been a joy. I remember taking my then very small baby, my first born, around the supermarket and just being overwhelmed with love for this little dot of a daughter staring up at me. I can honestly say it has been the best thing I have ever done, and l am so proud of both my children (a son joined my daughter 3 years later), and the way they have grown up into wonderful adults. My daughter is now entering a new phase in her life – and I am delighted to be acquiring a son-in-law. How did we find out there was a wedding in the offing? First there was a picture of a rainy castle, then one of some monkeys, and then finally some text – “I’ve asked him to marry me and he said YES”. Like Mother like Daughter – I proposed to my husband, Paul, also on a leap year 29th February quite a few years ago and E decided that she would do the same, if the time was right, whilst she and S were on holiday in Japan. Paul and I are delighted, we have known S for years and years, in fact he and E had attended the same schools, and had also been in the same classes for some of the time. This deep rooted friendship will, I believe, stand them in good

stead for the future. They began going out as boyfriend and girlfriend after they had finished their A levels and stayed together throughout their university years, travelling every other weekend, more or less, to stay with each other. Like most couples they moved in together and took that most momentous of steps – they bought a puppy together, and Polly the Labrador joined the family herd of dogs. The planning begins... So now, in lockdown, they have been trying to solidify their plans, and as I work in the wedding industry they have been picking my brains. I would love to sort it all for them, after all I have so many friends in the industry. BUT, it’s not my wedding and I am very mindful that S’s parents should be equally involved. So I have answered questions when asked and tried – very hard – just to give the answer, but I suspect I have given my opinion and made more suggestions. E is so excited and has booked an appointment with a wedding dress shop for early July – so it’s starting to feel very real. Things have changed so much since Paul and I married, and even though I work in the industry it’s very different when you are on the customer side.
They want to have a wonderful day but they also have their feet firmly on the ground – they are also saving for a deposit on a house, so they definitely don’t want to break the bank. They are looking at a range of options for the ceremony, but one decision has already been made, my business partner and great friend Denise will be leading the ceremony after they have done the legal bit at the Register Office. My best friend Amanda lives in Cheltenham and for many years we have enjoyed a weekend together, going to Burghley Horse Trials. As well as enjoying the horses and the thrilling competition, the Canvas shopping village is a big draw and we have always laughed about one stand in particular, saying that when we are “the Mother of the Bride” (we both have daughters), we will go to this boutique for our outfits! Well the time has come and luckily they have a shop in Cheltenham, so come the autumn, I will be spending a weekend with my chum trying on the most beautiful jackets!

Real weddings
We knew we wanted to get married around the Polzeath / Rock area as we spend so much of our time there. The weekend we got engaged in Polzeath, we met with the vicar and visited the church options for the St Minver area, and fell in love with St Michael’s church straight away. We looked at venue options close by, knowing that we wanted an outdoors, festival style day (a formal sit down 5 course dinner and everyone restricted to
certain timings wasn’t for us), and found out that the field next to the church could be hired. We met with the owner of Porthilly Farm to view the field, and the views were just breathtaking, even on a winter’s windy day! We rented a lovely cottage at the farm called Little Tides which is next door to the church - perfect for me to get ready at and also for me and Simon to stay on the wedding night and the following week.
We loved that our guests could park there, walk through the church yard for the ceremony and then follow us back up to the main event on the field afterwards.

Real weddings We really just wanted a festival, chilled, outdoorsy theme. We had festival style wristbands with ‘Finch Wedding 13.07.19’ on them, food and drink token packs, festival flags, garden games, hay bales, a fire pit, food vans, fireworks, a chilled band during the day and then a more party style band for the evening. The only time we insisted everyone got together and sit inside the tipi was for speeches. The food and drink was a relaxed ‘help yourself when you’re hungry and sit where you’re comfortable’ style. My brief to the florist was ‘wild, seasonal, mixed, colourful flowers’. We used some mixed pastel colour material to make the bunting to decorate the inside of the tipi and the walkway from the church to the tipi.
We used Wild Tipi for the tipi. We were incredibly lucky with the weather (it was just a bit too windy), which was very fortunate as we had not come up with any plan B for rain...and we had lots of rain on Thursday night!

TOP TIPS the day The most magical parts of ays on alw as itself, were the sunset utifully bea just was it st, the North Coa r water. ove s hill the ind beh ing sett e photos we had just been having som timed so , hill the of top the taken on the two perfectly to take a seat just and of us at the edge of the field watch the sunset together.
We had scones available when people arrived from the church, from the local bakery Barnecutt in Rock and of course had Rhodda’s cream. The food vans were open between 3pm - 5pm and were Ansum Food Co and Wild Food Kitchen. We then had Callestick ice cream and later in the evening (about 9pm) fish and chips deliveries from Rock n Roll Plaice. Our bar was a converted horse box called The Rhubarb Roller, and Danielle made 3 cocktail choices which were all lush. We chose all Cornish drinks (and very much enjoyed the tasting part of this process!) which included Knightor sparkling and wine, Fowey Valley Vodka, Tarquins Gins, Sharps and Skinners beers. Even the tonic and water was Cornish!
Thomas Frost’s photos were beautiful. We just loved how excited he was and brought in to what we were trying to achieve. He was absolutely great on the day too - captured lots of ‘in the moment’ shots rather than the classic posed unnatural ones! All our guests loved him!

Real weddings I thought I would really struggle with finding a dress as I’ve never seen any I like that much (no disrespect to any other bride there!!). My only description of what I wanted was boho style and not strapless. I ended up going for the first dress I tried on! It was called Ederne, by Pronovias and was boho vintage lace. I didn’t want to wear heals, as I didn’t want to be taller than everyone, wanted to be comfortable, and wanted to be ‘me’...’me’ is trainers! So I had a pair of custom converse made that had ‘FINCHY’ embroidered on the back! As Simon wears a suit for work everyday, he didn’t feel ‘special’ in a traditional wedding suit. He also wanted to be comfortable and in keeping with the style of the day. So him, his 2 best men and our dads all wore chinos, white shirts, braces, blue floral bow ties, and blue Vans trainers! I think they looked great and although I was originally a bit unsure about my Dad rocking a pair of Vans, he looked pretty damn cool!! Danielle, from the Bloom Room, totally understood the style we were after for our flowers. She made my flower crown, bridesmaid bouquets and buttonholes for the boys and my mum. For flowers in the tipi, I collected mixed coloured jars and bottles etc and Danielle delivered a load of boho coloured wild stems the day before. Me, my mum and my chief bridesmaid, Kirsty, had a lovely relaxing hour arranging the stems in the various bottles and placing them randomly on the tables. It looked very boho / shabby chic which I loved and I was so pleased we were able to put them together ourselves.

Real weddings We didn’t have a traditional wedding cake; instead we used Kern of Kernow. They have a van called Beyonce, so after the speeches, Beyonce arrived to serve bundt cakes and coffee. They were such a hit! We massively over ordered so that we could eat more bundt cakes at the BBQ the following day and also live off them for the next week or so!
We wanted a chilled out, fun vibe of music playing during the time people were eating, drinking, playing games etc. We used a band local to home, Alresford Ukulele Jam, a ukulele band who play covers. So much fun! Had people dancing right from the start and was a great background to people falling down in a game of limbo! In the evening we had a local band called Cyderfex play - they are brilliant and our guests loved them! We found them at the Wax Watergate Bay Fireworks in November 2018 when they played there. We asked them to play at our wedding that evening and hadn’t seen them again until the wedding night. It was a slight risk as we couldn’t actually remember (in our hungover states) what they were like after the fireworks! But we very quickly remembered why we loved them, and have seen them a few times since.
MEMORABLE MOMENT I love fireworks! I had wan ted fireworks but we had agreed to focus on some other parts of the day inst ead. Little did I know that Simon had prep ared a surprise! Him and his best men had been buying and practicing firework displays at home for weeks in the build up and it paid off as they ma naged to surprise me with the most amazing firework display ever!

The Edible Flower
NOT SAFE ON YOUR WEDDING CAKE! As I’m sure you are aware, many varieties of flowers and foliage are toxic, which if ingested can cause many unpleasant symptoms - the last thing you want on your big day! Lily of the valley, hydrangea, gypsophila, irises & daffodils are amongst those that are a big no-no, while ivy and the ever-popular eucalyptus are amongst toxic foliage. The number of wedding cakes that I see on social media with eucalyptus on is shocking. Unless you’re planning a wedding for koalas, I suggest rethink! You may consider asking your florist to provide your flowers, however non-food grade pesticides are used heavily in the commercial flower industry and the majority of our cut flowers in the UK are imported. Once picked they’ll sit in buckets of unfiltered, potentially contaminated water. Sadly this means neither toxic nor floristry flowers can be made safe to go on your cake. No matter how your cake designer prepares them, the flowers themselves are still touching the outside of your cake. Pollen, sap or the small hairs of the plant will end up on your cake and this can leach into your cake.
WHAT IS AND ISN’T SAFE FOR YOUR WEDDING CAKE! With growing trends in sustainable and eco weddings real flowers on wedding cakes are becoming ever more popular. You just can’t beat the smell of fragrant flowers and a vanilla bean Italian meringue buttercream. If you are planning to have fresh flowers on your wedding cake however, there are a few things that you need to consider first, as not all flowers are safe.
60
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
SO WHAT FLOWERS ARE SAFE? Don’t despair! Happily, there are so many plants with edible flowers and foliage, with producers growing food-safe varieties that can be used to embellish your wedding cake. Your cake designer has food hygiene training so will know the best way to handle food safe flowers before they are used on your cake. Classic choices include nasturtiums and roses, but these are just the beginning. Camelias make great statement blooms for late winter wedding cakes, peony tulips in spring, dahlias in the summer, even wisteria from your garden can be used to adorn your wedding cake. The list goes on.
Cakes
Edible flowers are versatile and amazing; they look and smell fantastic and when grown locally they are sustainable with no waste.
Why not include edible varieties in your other floral arrangements too. Ask your florist to include similar varieties and complementing flowers in your bouquets and arrangements for the perfect seasonal eco wedding. If you choose to go down the trending dried flowers route for your floral arrangements, then your cake designer can dry edible flowers to fit your theme. I hope that I’ve sparked in you a little of the passion that I have for edible flowers and you feel a little more informed now, as it can get a little confusing out there in the world of real flowers and wedding cakes for everyone.

Our ceremony at the Guildhall, a blessing outside the Island Chapel, drinks reception with speeches on the terrace at the Tate St Ives, followed by a short bus ride up to the Brewhouse for dinner and the evening reception. We had an intimate celebrant led ceremony at St Ives Guildhall with just 20 of our closest family and friends, before walking through town and the Summer Island Disco(!) to the Island, where we had a blessing and exchanged rings in front of the rest of our guests. Marco at The Brewhouse was just an absolute gem! We loved working with him on our plans and he was so keen to listen to our ideas. We cannot thank him enough! Also Alex at the Tate - it was very exciting to be their first wedding party, and the canapés and drinks were excellent.
I chose a Willowby by Watters dress from the St Ives Bridal Boutique. We could see the Island Chapel from the shop - it was just a perfect moment when I found it! It was in a sample sale - this meant that it could be fitted smaller and perfectly to my body shape! Thanks to Tiffany and Sam for this. My makeup and hair was done by Ione Makeup & Hair Artist. Ione was amazing! She is so kind and made me feel so beautiful but really natural. She did my mum’s hair and my maid of honour’s hair and make up too.

My maid of honour was 8 months pregnant on the day, and found a gorgeous dress from Seraphine. The rest of the ‘bridesmates’ wore trousers from Reiss, braces from Next and bow ties made by a friend in La Rochelle (Bo bow de La Rochelle). Ben treated himself to a waistcoat from Hackett.
We loved the sustainable ethos of the lovely Cat of Tide Flowers. She was so approachable and easy going, and worked really hard on the day to ensure all of the flowers looked fabulous.
Our friends from the Guardhouse Cafe on Berry Head, Brixham. We chose dessert cakes and there was plenty to go round! I designed my own stationery (I welcome commissions!!), including my own hand drawings of our favourite places in St Ives! We used the local bus service to move guests around St Ives - we booked two trips from the Tate up to the Brewhouse. Otherwise, there was lots of walking!! Our friends, the band Bare Groove, came down from Kent and sang our first dance, ‘Rather Be’, which I choreographed, much to Ben’s dismay! They really made the evening for us we danced non-stop! Also, late night pizzas from Slice Pizza Cornwall were a huge treat for us all! We loved Toby Lowe’s natural style of photography, helping us to capture all of the wonderful moments of the day. The muted and almost moody tones suited our personal style perfectly. Toby was warm and fun and we’d highly recommend him.

Real weddings The venue for both the wedding and the ceremony was the Carlyon Bay Hotel in St Austell. We wanted somewhere close to home, why go anywhere else when you live in beautiful Cornwall! We also didn’t want to travel between venues on the day, partly as we knew it was going to be an exhausting day for us but also for our guests. Carlyon Bay ticked all of those boxes, and then some!
The staff are fantastic, the views are beautiful, the venue is stunning and they had a very reasonably priced winter wedding package - we couldn’t say no!
We themed the wedding around our shared favourite geeky things, the majority inspired by our favourite video game series ‘Dragon Age’ which we bonded over very early on in our relationship. The bridal entrance music, all of the wedding stationery and table names was Dragon Age themed.
We also included dinosaurs, because we love dinosaurs and all weddings need more dinosaurs. We had dinosaur cake toppers, tiny gold dinosaurs as part of our wedding favours, I had dinosaur earrings and Steve and his groomsmen had dinosaur ties, pocket squares and cufflinks. Steve and I both wore dinosaur socks too!

Real weddings
We spent hours searching online for a photographer. I knew it would be a challenge as an ex-freelance photographer myself, but as soon as I found Sofie Michelle’s work I knew she would be perfect. She was fantastic, totally unphased by the chaos of a wedding day and helped us both to relax in front of the camera. I originally booked the appointment with Coastal Bridal just to get some inspiration, try some dresses on and see what styles I liked but Hailey and Edwina were amazing. They tapped into what I liked and what styles would suit me so quickly. Edwina picked out a dress for me and, even though it was only the fourth I’d tried on, all of us knew it was the one. It was so flattering, surprisingly comfortable and the fabric was so soft and pretty - I couldn’t stop smiling wearing it! I find dress shopping extremely stressful generally, even more so if I am limited in my options, so I didn’t want to be too demanding or restrictive.
I wanted my bridesmaids to be comfortable as well so I decided early on that I’d pick a colour for my bridesmaids (navy) and they could wear whatever formal clothing they wanted in that colour - e.g. dress, suit or jumpsuit - and from wherever they wanted.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Real weddings Steve’s best woman, Katie, is an incredible hair and make up artist (@katiejmua on Instagram). She very generously offered to do my bridal hair and make up as a wedding gift and I’m so very grateful! We had such a blast getting ready in the morning, I definitely felt so much more relaxed for having a room full of friends! Katie worked her magic too, turning me from ‘very anaemic and sleep deprived swamp witch’ to ‘beautiful bride’!
Steve got his suit from the ‘Tailor Me’ range at Moss Bros in Truro. He chose a light coloured suit and a contrast that matched our colour theme, so he chose a navy waistcoat that had a navy lining on the back which matched the lining in his suit jacket. Inside his suit jacket, they embroidered our initials and the date of our wedding in gold which was a really lovely, personal touch. For the table plan, I handmade a map of Thedas, the world of Dragon Age, drawing it out with fineliner pens and using the traditional tea and coffee staining method to give it a weathered look.
As we were trying to fund as much of the wedding on our own as we could, we knew flowers would be a challenge. I decided to see if I could make some instead, and tested out several techniques with satin ribbon. They came out much better than I hoped!
In the months leading up to the wedding I made over 140 flowers for my bouquet, my hair accessory, bridesmaid’s flowers, buttonholes for the groom, groomsmen and our mums and for the table decorations.
I used wooden pinboard pins as map markers with thin burgundy ribbon to match the market to each table list. For table lists, I used the font from the game series to type them up, printed them on cardstock, tea/coffee stained them to match the map and then mounted them on hand-marbled black paper. For the finishing touch, I melted red wax onto the map and used a dragon stamp seal for each list. For a fun surprise, we also disappeared mid-reception for a quick costume change and returned in our respective dinosaur costumes to party the rest of the night away!

TOP TIPS FROM WEDDING INDUSTRY BUSINESSES
FLOWERS: KATE FROM FLORIBUNDA I would recommend choosing a colour scheme but always choose flowers that are seasonal to help minimise your costs; your florist can help guide you on this and make suggestions for substitutions of flowers if your first choice isn’t available. Also let your venue influence your florals, for example choose a more wild, loose feel for rustic settings and more structured arrangements might suit more formal venues or if you are in a beach setting it’s always nice to bring a bit of a beach feel into the designs too.
CELEBRANT: KIM FROM KIM BAKER HUMANIST CELEBRANT Be yourself, plan a wedding that reflects you. You will enjoy the whole day much more if you are comfortable and can enjoy the celebrations; a photographer who puts you at ease, a celebrant who listens to what you want for your ceremony, a venue that will enable you to have the party you dream of. Even down to the time of the day for your ceremony, this can make so much difference to you and how relaxed you feel. It’s your day – so make it yours!

Ask the expert
PHOTOGRAPHY: OLIVIA FROM OLIVIA WR FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY Wedding photography is such an individual thing and you need to be so sure that you’re booking the right person/people for you, not only in terms of style but also personality too. After all, we will be with you and your guests for most of the day! Another bit of advice would be to ‘lighten your list’. Have a really good think about what you really want and need, and what you definitely don’t. It is extremely easy to get caught up in the moment and get carried away!
MAKEUP: SALLY FROM ORCHARD MAKEUP Wedding makeup should be timeless and not necessarily what you would wear on a night out. Lots of dark colours can look harsh in daylight and can be ageing. Go for a more classic glam day look and play up the eyes rather than the lips if you want a low maintenance look. A strong lip needs to be applied throughout the day otherwise it can look messy, whereas a soft lip will wear off and not ruin the overall look.
