GUIDE
Welcome
What a strange and worrying time we’re currently in. Firstly my heart goes out to all the couples who have had to rearrange their wedding. It has been testament to the community spirit of the wedding industry that couples have been supported by their local wedding suppliers and so many weddings have been rescheduled without too many issues. As one bride said to me, the ‘silverlining’ in all this was that as her wedding was all paid for she now has a year to save up for an awesome honeymoon! For those of you who are in the early stages of planning your wedding, the current situation will make visiting venues and going to wedding fairs impossible, so use the time to sit down with your partner and put your wedding budget, timelines, guest list, etc in place. Head over to the blog on our website for where to start with your wedding planning. Technology also allows us to virtually view venues like never before. Make use of venues’ own tools to allow you to get a feel for the venue with an aim to have a small shortlist of wedding venues to look at in person when we can. Pengenna Manor have recently launched their virtual video tour at pengennamanor.co.uk. You can find a list of local approved wedding venues on our Resources page on the website. If you don’t find what you’re looking for in our magazine, head over to www.silverlinings. co.uk and check out our Wedding Directory for a comprehensive list of local wedding professionals. You’ll also find wonderfully inspiring blogs and practical planning downloads.

Legal
PARTNERSHIP FOR ALL! On 31st December 2019 history was made and the final part in the jigsaw that has been Marriage and Civil Partnership law slipped into place as the first heterosexual couples contracted their Civil Partnership. The reaction to the news that Civil Partnership is available to every couple who want to legalise their union irrespective of their gender has ranged from disinterest to joy. Some have thought it will be unpopular, some that it is unromantic and some others just can’t understand why it is necessary. The institution of Marriage has been available to heterosexual couples in one form or another throughout history and throughout the world, and in its present form in this country with a division between civil and religious Marriage since 1837. The landmark piece of legislation which allowed same sex couples the same protections and rights as married couples came into being on 5th December 2005, after a hard fought battle. On March 13th 2013 the Same Sex Marriages Act came into being, allowing same sex couples to contract their legal union as a Marriage, and if they were already in a Civil Partnership they could convert that to a Marriage. These laws have been very welcome but there was still a minority of heterosexual couples who
12
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
felt that they wanted a legal union based on equality. There is a myth that “Common Law Marriage” is as good as being married – it is not and can leave partners in a legal limbo usually at a very vulnerable time. Many couples felt unable to commit to a Marriage with its historical referencing of, amongst other traditions, the patriarchal ownership of the bride being given from the father to the husband. These couples felt excluded by the laws relating to Marriage and Civil Partnership as they stood and so they started to lobby for Civil Partnership for heterosexual couples. Again it was a hard fought battle which was eventually won and the law was passed and the first couples contracted their partnership on 31st December 2019. Many of the couples who have been campaigning for years for this opportunity have gone to the Register Office to do the paperwork. A Civil Partnership is contracted in many similar ways to a Marriage, a notice of Civil Partnership has to be given by the couple at their local Register Office, and they then have to wait for 28 days before they can attend the Register Office or Approved Venue to sign the Civil Partnership Schedule along with two witnesses and a Civil Partnership Registrar. There does not have to be a ceremony, and the Partnership is legal when all parties have signed the schedule – no words need to be spoken.
Legal
– and it is a wonderful thing that everyone can now contract a legal union in whatever form feels appropriate to them. In these present and uncertain times, to have the protection of a legally recognised union can only be a good thing offering the shelter of certainty in a worrying time. As Independent Celebrants we have already been contacted by a couple who want to celebrate their Civil Partnership with a ceremony. A ceremony which will be based on equality, romance, family and fun, for them it is a modern, progressive and liberating choice. The ceremony will be meaningful and joyful and we can begin creating new traditions!

Jewellery
After the cake has been cut, and the dress and suit are back in the wardrobe, your wedding rings are the lasting reminder of a wonderful day celebrating the commitment you have made to each other. So why do people but such a significant piece of jewellery online? With busy lifestyles revolving around work and family, it’s easy to look at some pictures on a website, read the specifications and choose from there - and with lower prices promised, they’re easy to buy at the click of a button. However, the advice you get is little to none and the quality is not the same as you would get from a renowned jeweller. Most rings are available in different widths and weights, including a lightweight design which is ideal for those who don’t normally wear any jewellery. Platinum is a popular choice for engagement rings, with their counterpart wedding bands favoured by brides-to-be, especially the diamond eternity styles bands.
With Palladium becoming a rising and less expensive alternative to White Gold and Platinum, it has become popular amongst young couples, and particularly with groomsto-be. With more finishes to choose from, the metals can be brushed and patterned, or even customised to your personal designs. If you have something else in mind, or perhaps have a Pinterest board with your dream ring, many jewellers will offer a bespoke service - from creating an image for you to see, then making a ring completely unique to you and your personality. Not getting married until next year, or even the year after? With the cost of precious metals and diamonds steadily increasing, it is never too soon to purchase your wedding bands - it is actually one of the last things that engaged couples buy, after the venue is booked and outfits are purchased, and then we come full circle to buying lower quality rings on the internet that may not necessarily be want you want.

Real weddings Jewellery
As well as these traditional shapes, other popular choices are ribbon twist, square profile, diamond set, halo, and wishbone styles.
D-SHAPE The ring has a rounded exterior, but the inside is flat to the finger - a ‘D’ profile.
PLATINUM The most popular metal for wedding rings because of its hardness and natural white colour which will stay white and never need replating. Platinum is hypoallergenic, so perfect for people with sensitive skin. 16
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
WHITE GOLD More affordable than platinum but it will need recoating in rhodium almost yearly to maintain the bright white colouring.
YELLOW GOLD Created by combining pure gold with copper and silver. Depending on what carat you choose, the colour and hardness of the ring will differ - 9ct is the hardest but less durable, while 24ct is the softest.
Jewellery
FLAT COURT This style is the reverse of the D-shape. The exterior is flat, but the inside is domed to give a comfortable fit.
TRADITIONAL COURT The outside and inside profile of the ring are rounded. This curved style is comfortable and also makes it easier to slip the ring on and off.
SOFTENED COURT Softened court rings have a very similar profile to the court shape but with a less pronounced dome on the outside of the ring.
ROSE GOLD The warm, pink hue is created by combining yellow gold with a copper alloy. Rose gold often features in bi-coloured rings to offset the more traditional white or yellow gold.
PALLADIUM More affordable alternative to platinum as it is not as rare but is just as durable. It has the same hypo-allergenic properties and bright white colour which will never fade or need replating.
With the average spend of weddings rings being ÂŁ2000 for the pair, spread the cost of your wedding bands by using payment plans offered by most jewellers.
TITANIUM Its natural colour is a silvery grey, however, titanium can be coloured so you can pick just about any hue for your band. It’s lightweight and durable, but cannot be resized.
TUNGSTEN Tungsten is available in black, grey and white and is very strong and durable, but cannot be resized.

TOP TIPS FROM WEDDING INDUSTRY BUSINESSES
BRIDAL: ELAINE RAWLINGS BRIDAL BOUTIQUE elainerawlings.co.uk
Once you have made contact with the boutique and booked an appointment, my top tip when trying on is to keep an open mind and if the stylist pulls out a wild card dress that you hadn’t selected try it on...it might just be the one!
20
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
In our modern digital age today’s bride can do so much research before deciding on what boutique to visit and this can save a lot of valuable time when choosing your gown. Most brides have some idea of style; traditional, modern elegance or boho vibes and this can be your starting point. Type these styles into Google and designers will start coming up. Most designers websites will also have a store locator which will then tell you where your nearest stockist is. You can also search locally for boutiques, again search ‘wedding dress shops Cornwall’ and in your local area. The website should tell you a lot about the boutique; hopefully you can see some interior pictures and a good selection of the dresses that are stocked. Most brides get a feel for a place simply through their website.
Ask the expert MAKEUP: EMILY’S BEAUTY STUDIO via Facebook
The most important thing for Brides to think of is, skincare (this includes your body too!). If you have any skin concerns or problem areas, it is a good idea to start working on this 4-6 months out. Get a couple of facials if you are unsure on where to begin. Once you find the right products, stick with them and try not to change anything right up to, and especially in the 4 weeks up to, your wedding as this may cause blemishes. Your makeup will look flawless I promise!
CHILDREN: CORNWALL CHILDCARE cornwallchildcare.com
As much as we love those little VIPs there is nothing more disruptive than bored children at a wedding. If you are having children at your wedding or are bringing them, just remember that it’s a long day for little minds so having fun activities to entertain them will not only keep the bride and groom happy but you as parents will be able to relax and enjoy the celebrations. There are some great colouring sheets online if you don’t want to break the bank however if your budget allows then professional childcare services will be money well spent. HAIR: ANNA INGRAM HAIRSTYLIST annaingramhairstylist
My top advice to my brides is to start a wedding hair scrapbook or just a folder of images on your phone when choosing your hairstyle. It will be very helpful to your hair stylist to see the variety of photos. It can be a whole hairstyle that you like or different elements that caught your eye, and most important is to include the photos of the hairstyles that you don’t like. This will give your stylist a clear idea of your likes, dislikes and expectations and will help to achieve the perfect look to suit you personally. silverlinings.co.uk

WHAT
WILL SUIT MY VENUE? When it comes to planning a wedding, nothing will determine the style, formality and overall vibe of your day as much as your venue. Any good wedding planner will tell you it the first place to start. But what many brides don’t think about is how impactful a venue choice will have on your wedding dress! By Caroline Griffiths, Bridal Gossip

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Bridal
Start your wedding dress shopping after you choose your venue, not before. This is because your dress should be comfortable as well as practical in the chosen setting. Choosing your dress first could run a risk of the dress not being suitable for the location.
What type of venue are you going for? RUSTIC BARN Relaxed, breezy, romantic should be the theme for your dress. Look for something light and airy. Not only will it pair well with the venue in aesthetics, but keeps you cool in the heat. A strapless neckline, gently embroidered bodice, a flowing skirt will make you feel fairy like.
Image: Emma Griffin Photography
COUNTRY ESTATE Any estate often has a lavish vibe, just as your dress should. This is the venue for opulent embroidery and beading or a little glitz and glam. Go big! If one venue lens for a princess gown its this one.
Image: Toby Lowe Photography
BEACH Airy and breathable light-weight fabrics are best suited for natural ambiance. Look for lightweight silk wedding dresses with draping fabrics that feel effortless, and avoid overly long trains that would trail through the sand and end up with you bringing half the beach back to your reception with you. You may have to transport your wedding dress abroad so, of course, you’ll want something that doesn’t crease, and you’ve got to wear it in the heat so lightweight fabric is key.
Image: Leo Sharp Photography
CHURCH From lace details to billowing ball gowns, make a grand entrance at the church. A church is a perfect opportunity for cathedral trains and heavy lace sleeves. Bare in mind that some churches are not comfortable with revealing dresses so make sure you keep a borola, pashmina on back up.

Styling
With Rebecca from The Unique Cornish Event Company theuniquecornishevent.co.uk
Choosing a style for your big day can be daunting and confusing at times but there are some key things to keep in mind to help you stay true to your and your partner’s vision. Remember that styling a wedding is something larger than just the aesthetics of the day. It can be in the venue you choose, the music you select, the invitations you send, right down to your food choices. All these details come together to create a unifying story, which helps guide the rest of your choices throughout the planning process. 32
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Styling
Style Priorities If you’re at the beginning of your planning process and a bit stumped, then an easy place to start is to write down your top three wedding ‘style’ priorities. Making a list of the things that are important to you and your partner; this will give you direction and get you thinking about your vision for the day. For example: are you into music; do you love nature and want a relaxed vibe; are you a foodie with a penchant for fine cuisine; is history and elegance your thing? These three style priorities can even help you find that venue and then the ball is rolling.

Styling
When styling for the editorial shoot for this edition I wanted to reference coming into the spring season and the fact that everything starts to come alive again, hence the working title, “Awakening”. This theme went through everything when considering the overall look, from the mix of dried, budding and live flowers, created by the super talented Tide Flowers, to the fresh faced, dewy makeup by Sally Orchard and relaxed hair from Anna Ingram.
Set your colour palette range Colour schemes are helpful to begin bringing together a style; different tones and textures open up far more unique styling choices. Don’t restrict yourself on your colour range. So long as the colours and tones tie in together. This allows much more flexibility and avoids creating a look that’s ‘one dimensional’. Choose a base colour which will be the one that is used most prominently throughout your wedding. Once you have your base colour, the next step is to choose a handful of complementary “accent” colours. These accents will round out your wedding palette, adding dimension and variation. For the “Awakening” shoot, Cat from Tide Flowers, used the basis of spring - whites, toffees and violets accented with other muted pastels - to help build the perfect colour pallet for the floral displays and bouquets. The bouquets were then finished with perfectly imperfect naturally dyed silk ribbons.

Styling
Venue guide Another place to start when considering your overall style for the day is working with your venue, if you have booked it. It doesn’t need to dictate every aspect of your day, but you should let it guide you in some direction. If you choose your venue based on the prospect of having an outdoor ceremony, you can pull inspiration from the surrounding nature; or if the venue has a striking dark wallpaper, pull that into your colour scheme.
It has a sense of grandiose, with the floor to ceiling sash windows bringing in the most beautiful streams of light. It was these light streams and pastel walls that provided the inspiration for the floral colours that then followed through into other areas, such as the stylish menus by RoCha Designs and candles Ester & Erik on the table scape.

Styling
Create a style board An easy way to do this is to create a mood board, either online or in a scrapbook. It’s a brilliant way to get your ideas together and keep you inspired. It also provides a great point of reference for when you need to make visual based decisions. Use everything and anything, don’t just think you have to stick to a bridal magazine. Go to B&Q to pick out the paint swatches from Farrow and Ball. Start to think about the layers of detail such as stationery, favours and food - this again made us think how those would tie in with our style priorities. Artists It’s ok to be inspired by things outside of the wedding world! Whilst Enys House has a sense of secrets gone by, its light rooms gave a sense of possibility. I therefore wanted to bring a fresh, youthful vibe to the styling for the shoot, using the fantastic velvet drop banner created by Alice Gabb, an all-time favourite calligrapher and artist of mine. I also love the beautiful work of ceramist, Michel Francois, who resides in and takes inspiration from the Cornish land. His pieces are timeless in shape and style with changing colours from the oxidation of the kilns. His jars were amazing to work with and allowed us to use large pieces of foliage and blossom to frame a stunning seated area.
36
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Styling
Spaces Although this styling is for a shoot, the principles behind how it comes together are the same. I knew I wanted a light, almost serene seated area for the models to be positioned. As with dry hire venues, you can also create different spaces and zones for your guests to be within. Consider relaxed seating areas, outside space, and little nooks and crannies for guests to enjoy one on one conversations.
For this I created a simple white backdrop using dressing divides from a great local shop called Just Delights in Penryn. The divides allowed us to create a space within a space, giving a sense of calm and beauty. The chair is an old battered armchair of Edwardian style, adding to the mix of antique and modern. You can hire in great pieces from a variety of wonderful suppliers, including StarGazey Hire, who can provide decorative items as well as beautiful chairs and tables for your wedding breakfast. silverlinings.co.uk
37
Styling
Table décor The table décor allows you to bring the true sense of the day’s style to the forefront. Think about what you want guests to experience when dining at your wedding breakfast. Is it a relaxed picnic, a sharing feast or a classic but stylish served meal? Your feast will help you determine your table layouts.
I wanted to bring that sense of modern romance, using modern style glassware, stunning low floral displays with the mix of dried and live florals, and grey stone vases, complementing the linen grey cloth and blush pink Ester & Erik candles.
38
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
The accents were provided by the beautiful stationary created by RoChaDesigns. When briefing Julie Ann, I sent her the mood board and colour palette and gave her a brief of the romance of calligraphy mixed with modern fonts. Not an easy task, but she completely grasped the concept; it pays to work with talented designers who can bring your vision to life and add so much more. I love simple menus and place names, with the modern effect of the clear overlay. I also love the use of the semi-circle to keep that fresh style without going too far down the trendy geometric design route.
Styling
The Cake The cake should also reflect the overall style and vibe of your day. Maybe you don’t like cake! I had one couple who really weren’t bothered about the cake and had a very relaxed affair overlooking the sea. They ended up having several Collin Caterpillars stacked up, which reflected their humour perfectly, even if it didn’t go with the colour scheme. For the editorial we worked with the wonderful Sarah from The Cornish Cakery who was able to create the most romantic yet modern three-tiered cake - white and simple in colour, adorned with beautiful dried and live flowers, with the most impressive flourish to create a ‘wow’ statement cake that suited the surroundings perfectly.
So what should influence your style? Of course use Pinterest, but use it with intention. It offers up so much inspiration and is one of the best places to build your vision, but even I can find myself pinning pretty images that don’t actually tie in with the overall style. When you start thinking about your wedding style, you do need to look at a number of ideas, but eventually you will refine your overall look. A top tip - edit the caption on the pinned image and write why you’ve chosen it. It might be the tiniest detail or simply the colours within it. This way, when you’re months down the line looking back at the board, you will know exactly why that image was chosen! Then relook at the board and see what is recurring - that’s your style basis! Then create a separate board with your preferred style basis. By all means have a look at trends, but do things your own way. Trends are great for ideas and seeing what others are doing, but make sure you do things how you want. Otherwise you may be looking back at the pictures and wondering when ever were electric blue bridesmaid dresses ok? I mean, if it’s your style then great, and remember there’s no real right or wrong, but it has to be about you and your preferences as a couple.

With many traditional / all-inclusive (wet hire) wedding venues you are offered a host of other services alongside it. Not only venue space but also their caterers, drinks, event designers and staffing. But if you go down the ‘dry hire’ or commonly known as ‘blank canvas’ route then you will hire a completely bare; a blank canvas space where you will need to source all of your suppliers. Yes, it means there is often more to plan but these weddings are often more personal. You can put your own stamp on the venue and start from scratch to really create your vision. If you are a couple with a great imagination and don’t want to be con-strained to a venue’s package, dry hire venues are definitely for you!

However, on paper, dry hire venues may seem like a budget-friendly option, especially as many dry hire venues can be considerably cheaper. Asking your potential venue what’s included and what’s not within the venue hire fee is crucial. Some dry hire venues include basic facilities, services and furniture, while others don’t, which means that you may need to research, source and pay for everything from the more obvious tables, chairs and tableware to the less obvious lighting, generators, heating, staff, security, cleaning, toilets and waste disposal in addition to the venue hire fee itself. For dry hire weddings it’s really important to set a budget and stick to it. Firstly make a list of exactly what you need and the priorities. Just remember to leave some of the budget for last minute costs as with dry hire there is always something!

Dry hire venues often means working with more suppliers which can be more complicated during set-up and on-the-day logistics. When making early arrangements with your venue it’s really important that you ask about access and timings and that you’re comfortable with the amount of time that you’ve got to set-up and breakdown. Bare in mind that with no venue co-ordinator or staffing setup will take a lot longer than normal.
Venues
Considering logistics for your guests will also make the day run smoothly and again, it’s far better to have thought it through in advance. Obviously, your venue will be open by the time that guests arrive but think about how and where they’ll be arriving. Check parking, access times and even loading/unloading restrictions, especially if you’ve got a lot of deliveries planned. You might even need to delegate a friend to act as a traffic controller or make alter-native/out of hour delivery arrangements if you’re in a particularly busy area. Taxis are a brilliant option but if guests are driving themselves, it’s a great idea to make directions clear.
If your dry hire venue is off the beaten track in a field or farm with limited access, then once again you’ll need to consider the options available to your suppliers and guests as there’s no point in planning a beautiful wedding day if you are unable to access your venue. Ask For Help DIY weddings are always a lot of fun however they are extremely hard work! Do not under-estimate the amount of work that goes into them and without the venue staff you gain from an all-inclusive the morning after the wedding only means one thing……all hands to the deck! Consider using a wedding planner, if not for all the planning process but definitely on the day coordination if a dry hire wedding is a direction you want to go.
WEDDING PLANNERS IN CORNWALL Caroline Griffiths Wedding Planner The Unique Corn ish Event Company Hazel Parsons
If a planner is not for you, in addition to your team of suppliers, enlist the help of reliable family and friends to make sure that you’re not bogged down with all of the set-ups in the days be-fore your wedding. Find out who’s available to help you, allocate them roles and jobs and share the load. You can have so much more fun setting up and bringing your wedding vision to life with friends and family on board that actually, all of this can feel like an extension of the wedding itself. Why not open the bubbly, put the wedding playlist on and enjoy every minute!

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Videography
Wedding videography has come a long way since ‘Uncle Bob’ was filming weddings, with a massive camcorder on his shoulder, held with his shaky hands whilst getting in everyone’s way, then delivering long and boring footage on a VHS tape. You can now get shorter, cinematic footage that shows your personal love story on the best day of your life. With Hollywood-style drone shots giving you the most epic wedding video, ‘Uncle Bob’ would only have got by hiring a helicopter! There are lots of reasons why you should hire a Wedding Videographer to capture your day, and they are not all about you.
You can’t be everywhere at once on your special day, especially when all your guests want a piece of you. Your wedding video can show you different parts of your day that you never saw, or even realised happened. You will always hear that your day goes so quickly, well it goes even quicker than that. The bits that you did see on the day can become a distant memory, very quickly. An experienced Wedding Videographer will capture the main parts of the day for you to look back and remember for the rest of your life. This includes big moments like your morning preparations, service, speeches, cake cutting and your first dance to all the smaller easily-missed details like laughing relatives, decorations and your dancing gran.
Not everyone will be around forever. We get told by our couples that our videos are the primary way of remembering loved ones who were with them on their wedding day but are no longer here. Wedding videos are a great way of showing your younger family, future kids and the next generation what your special day was like. My own children love watching wedding videos of our friends and family and always point out who is on the TV screen. For some couples, their wedding is a chance to get together with all their friends and family who they haven’t seen in ages to celebrate their love. If you are going to film an event, then this surely is the time to do it. At the end of your wedding, everyone stops dancing, the food gets eaten, everything hired gets returned, but the wedding video will allow you to relive your special day for the rest of your life.

VENUE We really liked the mix of the rustic setting with the modern building for the reception at Trevibban Mill Vineyard. There were beautiful views all around and being right in the vineyard made for some amazing photo opportunities. We used The Cornish Tent Company who were brilliant at accommodating us at the last minute when we decided that we should get a marquee for our ceremony and not just rely on the Cornish weather!
We were going for a relaxed, romantic country wedding. I wanted lots of greenery and flowers - quite natural and rustic to fit in with the beautiful vine-yard surroundings.
Appleton’s ran the restaurant at Trevibban Mill and we were their last wedding before they moved. We had a delicious Italianinspired feast.

CEREMONY We customised our wedding ceremony and wrote it with the help of Cornish Celebrants - this meant it was very personal to us. Every aspect meant something special and it wasn’t just a generic wedding format from the music selection to the readings, we handpicked everything.
We were able to bring together different family traditions beliefs and make it something that we felt reflected us and our relationship. FLOWERS We both did all of our own flowers - with some help from Becks from The Unique Cornish Event Co & other family members when we were running tight for time! I watched a lot of YouTube videos in the lead up to the day to try and master my bouquet & the floral arch! In the end I was really pleased with how it turned out and we were able to achieve the wild, greenery & flower-filled look I was hoping for. Doing DIY flowers was a big undertaking but I think it helped to keep me calm the day before the wedding.

Real weddings PHOTOGRAPHY Thomas Frost was exceptional. Brilliantly professional on the day and we absolutely love our photos & video! We researched photographers for a little while and then came across Tom’s portfolio. I loved his natural style and after we took some test shots on site for our engagement shoot, we knew we were definitely in safe hands. We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer!
VENUE DECOR Most of the venue decor was also DIY - Alec made the wooden pallet signs. We bought loads of bud vases and tealight holders from Ikea and dotted these along the tables and around the room. We had lanterns from Aldi with pillar candles lining the aisle and loads of fairy lights for the balcony from Lights4fun. My brother also gifted us a bunch of The White Company candles which made everything smell divine! We hired our linen from Trevarno Marquees & Events who were a dream to work with.
ENTERTAINMENT James Dixon played the acoustic guitar for ceremony & drinks reception - he was an absolute star! He really set the tone for our ceremony. We then had DJ In Cornwall for the party at the reception - he kept the dancefloor full the whole night (although my family needed no encouragement!).

29TH JUNE 2019 CHURCH & RECEPTION The ceremony took place in our local parish church, St Paul’s. We were fortunate enough to have the Reverend John Money (Padre within the Royal Marines) as well as Emily’s dad (a retired Canon) conducting the ceremony, with Emily’s dad poignantly seeing us through our vows to one another. After the ceremony our journey to the venue took us to important places

to us in the local area along the way, including Stonehouse Barracks and the Cremyll ferry. We met each other in Plymouth and in the early stages of our relationship spent a lot of time in the Stonehouse and Mount Edgcumbe area. Robbie was at the time based at Stonehouse Barracks and Emily had a flat in the area. We both had treasured memories of time spent together there.
Real weddings The Orangery at Mount Edgecumbe was somewhere we visited for ice cream in the summer and cosy coffees and lunches in the winter after long walks in the Country Park. We both loved the ambience and decoration of the building, alongside the gorgeous surrounding gardens, delicious food and friendly staff, but thought it would be entirely out of our price range to have our reception there. We were ecstatic when we realised we could afford to have it as our
venue and after our first meeting with Michelle, whose expertise and relaxed nature put us entirely at ease, we knew it was the place for us. It was important to us to have elements of the Royal Marines and military, particularly given that it was Armed Forces Day. We were also keen to use local businesses in the area rather than bigger companies and packages - we wanted to create a day that was above and beyond fun for everyone but unique and keeping with us as a couple. We had quite a few moving parts to the day and kept everyone moving, but this was quite true of how we liked to spend our time together.
MEMORABLE MOMENT Seeing Robbie’s face when I surp rised him by singing Caledonia as par t of my speech. Then seeing our loved ones’ faces when Robbie and I performed ‘You’ve got the dirtee love’ as a surprise after our first dance.
WEDDING DRESS My dress came from The Bridal Corner, Crownhill in Plymouth. I had been to lots of places to try on dresses (something I would absolutely recommend doing) but The Bridal Corner had by far the best range. I was encouraged to be honest about the dresses I tried on which eventually helped Kelly to narrow down the dress for me. She just got it so spot on and it was a dress I was not expecting to like! Whilst the dress was at least two sizes big for me, it meant I got a great deal and they recommended a seamstress to help to resize the dress.

Real weddings PHOTOGRAPHY We felt absolutely blessed when we came across Arianna. As soon as I spoke with her I knew that she would be someone who would be fun and relaxed to be around, unobtrusive and we could just let her use her exceptional skills and creativity. On the day she totally blended in with us all, was so much fun to be around and just made the whole experience even more enjoyable. We were absolutely blown away with the quality of the photos she took and the speed at which she got them to us. What a talent!
FLOWERS We got our bouquets and buttonholes from Flower Fayre in Stoke Village, Plymouth. I was so fortunate to have a planning meeting with the team there and was impressed with their skills and experience. They came up with some fantastic ideas, and were happy to guide me according to price as well as aesthetics.

We bought some other flowers locally from Cathy’s Flowers in Plymouth Market nearer the time so that we could decorate the church and had some fantastic help from ladies at the church in making it look beautiful using glass milk bottles. We then re-used these flowers in the venue and used the bouquets on the main table by placing them in vases. Whilst this required a bit of support from people carrying flowers across on the boat, our guests seemed to like being involved in helping and it was a great way of saving pennies! STATIONERY A very creative friend who was able to help me to think about what I wanted help to design our invitations and stationery. Lauren helped us to capture some of the initial ideas I’d had and create something really beautiful. She supported me to then get these printed myself to save costs and gave lots of advice about type of paper etc to use and what would be in keeping with the design. I then used these concepts to create the table plan myself. We got everything printed on printed.com and managed to find some useful discount codes! The quality of the print was excellent.
Real weddings TRANSPORT We walked some of the way from the church back to Stonehouse Barracks and then got the Edgcumbe Bell across to Mount Edgcumbe with Plymouth Boat Trips. They helped us to privately charter a return boat back to Royal William Yard for us at the end of the night and ensure we all got back safely which was incredible! ENTERTAINMENT The Magic Marine Magician offered some fantastic entertainment during the day, mesmerising both young and old with spellbinding magic. We also had the Royal Marine Cadets who led the Corps of Drums before we sat down to our Wedding Breakfast. We were fortunate enough to keep the Royal Marine theme, and had Sounds About Right (look them up on Facebook), a band made up of serving members of the Royal Marine Band, helping us out with the music and got everyone dancing!
The Red Arrows who performed an outstanding display for Armed Forces Day and came over to Mount Edgcumbe just after we had sat down for our meal. Robbie had enquired about whether this could be possible but had no response so we just didn’t think they would but they totally surprised us on the day and it seemed that the love heart was right above our heads. The jury is still out whether it was definitely for us, but either way they were spectacular and totally blew us away!
TOP TIPS: We chose suppliers who we felt comfortable around and delegated things in advance so that ushers and bridesmaids kne w what the plan was before the day, it just made things run really smoothly and people knew what they were doing. It was really special to have a moment with my mum and dad sharing a whiskey before leaving to go to the church to calm any nerves.

Catering
As more of us become full-on foodies and invest time in sourcing fresh, local and downright delicious food, we expect our wedding caterers to live up to these mouth-watering expectations too. Getting the right reactions from your guests is so important, so how do you make sure you choose the right wedding caterers for your style, your wedding and your budget?
By Caroline Griffiths Caroline Griffiths Wedding Planner carolinegriffiths.co.uk
Choosing the right caterer for your wedding is one of the most important decisions in your wedding planning. It’s right up there with who you should marry! (Let’s face it, food is pretty important!) So here’s everything you need to know. silverlinings.co.uk

Catering
Do I need a caterer? For many couples plunging into a DIY wedding those famous words of “Were doing the catering ourselves” always makes me nervous! As much as auntie Joan may make a mean flan and Dad can get cheap booze from the local pub don’t underestimate the other one million things a caterer actually does! You need to seriously consider a professional caterer if your guest list exceeds 40. You will not enjoy yourself when you’re running around worrying about dirty dishes and whether or not everyone has had enough to eat. If you do take on the catering yourself, at least hire staff to serve and clear up. It’s definitely money well spent and you can always rely on these staff not disappearing after 12 hours of drinking prosecco and dancing. What type of catering do I need? Your caterer will very much depend on the venue and type of reception you’ve decided on. Many venues have an in house team, or recommended list. They may even insist that you use a particular one. However, for a marquee in the garden local restaurants, bakers, outside catering companies will be more than willing to quote. 70
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Once you’ve found your ideal venue, it’s always good to make an appointment to discuss dates, times, the number of guests and the exact prices of things – specifically the cost of the meal, which is usually the biggest expense in the budget. Your caterer will need to know the date, time of reception, the number of guests, level of hospitality you wish to provide and your limit on charges per head to supply you with ideas and quotations. Costs are usually quoted per ‘head’ (guest). This should always include staffing, crockery and linen. Always ask for quotes and confirmation of everything in writing – and file your copies carefully. There could be some additional catering equipment or staffing needed depending on your menu. It’s really important you confirm this as soon as possible or at least have an exact understanding so hidden costs do not creep up on you.
Remember that caterers tend to get booked up months in advance.

TOP TIPS FOR
YOUR MENU… 1.
M ake sure you have a mixture of fish, meats and vegetarian to give variety (unless you are opting for all veggie, vegan menus).
2 . Keep to your theme.
Do I really need evening food? This is a question I get asked all the time. The answer is YES! Unless you’re having an evening wedding reception. Extra evening guests or not, if you’re drinking and dancing into the night, it’s always a good idea to have some nibbles arranged for peckish guests to refuel after a long night of ‘dad dancing’. How much evening food should I provide? This is a difficult calculation – you’ll often hear people say 75% as a rule of thumb. Largely this is correct because you don’t want to run out of food but prepare to have some leftovers – don’t let this get you down. It means none of your guests went home via the kebab shop – you put on a good spread! No doubt you have a million and one questions about the dos and don’ts of a wedding caterer as you can see it’s a pretty intense area! As a planner, one of the most important parts of my job is to source the best caterer for my couples but it can sometimes take some work! A wedding planner can relieve an awful lot of the pressure when finding the best caterers so if food is a priority for you it would be worth getting in touch and chatting it through with a professional. If a wedding planner isn’t for you then my advice would be to start researching. Get some inspiration from Instagram or recommendations from friends and family. Once you are a bit more clued up on the catering jargon start putting a list of questions together for when you meet. How much should I expect my catering to cost? This is like asking how long a piece of string is. Some caterers focus on lower costs and higher volume, some have much higher costs but do significantly fewer events. It’s always good
3.
4.
emember that when guests are eating a R canape they will more than likely have a glass in the other hand! T ry to choose dishes that YOU like rather than trying to cater to all 120 guests.
to understand why some caterers are more expensive as they are likely to provide a different level of service and have a long-standing reputation than others. On the day of your event, no issue should reach the couple’s attention. With the help of a wedding planner, a caterer should be able to make judgement calls for each issue and execute the event perfectly. A caterer should know how to stay out of the way. This is a time to enjoy your new spouse and the ones you love. On your wedding day, the catering staff should know exactly what their jobs are and be able to execute them perfectly, without interrupting the newlyweds. Will the time of year make a difference to the menu we want? When are you getting married? The date of your special day could really reflect the food that you serve. For example, in autumn you might look to serve up something very different than what you would want in the spring or summer. Remember some foods are only available in the season so if you are really set on a game menu then a summer wedding is not for you! Do we need to try the menu before the day? Absolutely! Not only is the menu tasting the best part of choosing your wedding caterer but it’s a crucial part of the process. Although many caterers will have impressive marketing, photography and review the proof of a good caterer is really in the pudding! Sampling the menu is key to ensure you get exactly what you want and ensure you have made the right choice. It’s good to sample the food in your wedding surroundings and see how the service works and to get a feel for how the dining experience will be on the day. silverlinings.co.uk

YOUR WEDDING NERVES GOODBYE
72
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Well being
One of the most stressful life events is getting married but it should be one of the most enjoyable. So when it’s not, it can often feel confusing and disappointing.
Life coaches and hypnotherapists are now helping couples with stress management and confidence, including public speaking which doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Many professionals are offering workshops focused on empowering you to enjoy a more confident wedding day. Workshops or one-to-one tuition teach you some simple but effective techniques to relieve stress in the run up to your wedding and boost your confidence for the special day with a focus on speeches, photos and the first dance. Speeches Public speaking is one of the most common fears. The nerves and stress that this causes can have a huge impact on the enjoyment of your day for the speakers as well as your guests. Feeling more confident and learning how to manage the nerves can make for much more engaging speeches which are memorable for the right reasons.
Slow down - when someone feels nervous they tend to speak faster, making the speech less enjoyable to listen to. Slowing down encourages you to calm down while making the speech more enjoyable for the speaker and the guests.
Photos The best photos of us are taken ‘in the moment’ when we are happy just being ourselves. If we are worrying about how we look it generally leads to us looking uncomfortable. A common trick for actors wishing to look drunk is to focus on trying to act sober. This encourages normal actions to look less natural and more forced, the same is true when trying to act comfortable. By learning how to feel more confident you will be able to face the camera feeling positive. You can then look back on your wedding photos and enjoy how great you looked on your wedding day and not think how awkward and uncomfortable it was.
Fill your mind with thoughts of your favourite memories with your partner, think about when you met, your first date etc. Then the photos will capture genuine emotion and you will be able to enjoy the process more. It’s all about shifting the focus away from the camera.

Well being
First Dance It is not the quality of dancing that makes or breaks a first dance, it is the confidence of the dancers. Think about watching someone ‘Dad-dancing’. It’s fun to watch, no matter how bad the dance moves are it’s entertaining (unless it’s your own dad - then it’s just plain embarrassing). It’s the enjoyment and confidence of the dancer that makes it fun to watch. The same is true for your wedding dance. If you and your partner are feeling confident then people will not be focused on your ability to dance, it will become about the connection between the two of you - a beautiful thing to witness, rather than watching stiff arms and awkward forced smiles.
This moment is all about you and your partner. Look into each other’s eyes, think back to the highlights of your day so far. Bonus points if one of you can lean in and whisper a joke! The laughter will release tension and lead to some great photos of the two of you smiling and laughing together. It will also help you forget about everyone else in the room. Picking a song that you can both connect with will really help you to relax and enjoy it.
74
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
These are just a few simple tips that can make a difference on the day but what about the lead up to the event? It’s important to understand stress before learing how to manage stress in the run up to your wedding day. What is stress? To manage stress effectively, we first need to understand what stress actually is and how it affects us. Stress is the way that our bodies respond when we face a threat. In early humans this would likely be a big scary animal trying to eat you, these days it’s more likely to be a big scary mother-in-law. When we face that threat our body gets us ready to respond quickly and effectively. This is known as “Fight or Flight” we release adrenaline (and other hormones) to give us a boost of energy to help us react fast. That may work well when faced with a Sabretoothed tiger but when the stress is our wedding day we can’t just punch the vicar and run away. So what can we do?
Well being
FOR CALMER WEDDING PLANNING MAKE A PLAN An effective way to reduce stress is to prevent and minimise it before it affects us. While we can’t anticipate every cause of stress we can prepare ourselves by pre-empting some of it. A good wedding planner can really help you with this process. Having a plan of what you need to do when in the lead up to your wedding will really help you stay focused and on track.
BUDGET Money is another big cause of stress. It can feel like there is a lot of pressure to spend money. Some of the best weddings I’ve attended have been low-budget, what makes a great wedding is how well it reflects the happy couple and allows the guests to be a part of the day. It’s the people that really make a wedding, not the money spent.
MAKE IT ABOUT YOU Pleasing everyone is likely impossible and trying to will hugely increase the stress of planning. Remind yourselves of why you are getting married and focus on bringing your personality to the event. It’s your day not everyone else’s.
BREATHE Take time out. You and your partner have a lot going on and a lot to think about in the lead up to your special day. Remember to take some time away from all the wedding talk and just enjoy each other’s company. This will make it a lot easier to focus when you are ready to return to the planning and remind you of what the day is really all about. Time out by yourself is also hugely beneficial, look after yourself. Getting a good night’s sleep is more important than getting those last few invites written out tonight.
CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLE Somethings you just can’t control. Accept that and focus instead, on what is within your control. You can’t control the weather but you can have a back-up plan just in case.
DELEGATE It can be tough to ask for help but the chances are there are a lot of people around you who would just love to chip in. Getting friends and family involved in helping with specific tasks will free you up to think about the big-picture plan and allow them to have the input they desire without putting you in the awkward situation of wanting them to butt-out.

Well being
P R E PA R I N G YO U R
It’s the one of the biggest days of your life and you want to look your best! But where do you start and when? There are so many different approaches out there to lose weight, tone up, get the perfect bum, shape your arms, etc. How do you know if it’ll work for you? Ask yourself a couple of questions: “what’s your goal?”, “how much time until your wedding?”, “is it realistic?”, “have you got time to commit?” These are all important questions. For example, if you want to lose a stone (14lb/7kg) but only have 3 weeks to do it, then unfortunately unless you do something drastic and unsafe you’re not going to be able to achieve it.
76
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Well being
You need to get prepared, keep it simple, start early, and be consistent. If your goal is weight loss and you have 8kg to lose for example, give yourself at least 12 weeks with a 3 step programme: to lose the weight, to shape your body, maintain it as a healthy lifestyle. WITH A 12 WEEK PROGRAMME, BREAK IT DOWN INTO 4 WEEK CHUNKS WITH EACH FOCUSING ON ONE OF THE THREE ELEMENTS:
1
2
3
STAGE ONE WEEKS 12-8
STAGE TWO WEEKS 7-5
STAGE THREE WEEKS 4
- workouts to burn fat
- r esistance workouts to start shaping your body
-m aintaining the weight lost and the new shape achieved
-e ating a healthy balanced diet - t echniques to help stress, to stay positive and help create healthy habits
- s ome high calorie burn workouts -c ontinued healthy balanced eating
Getting started is the hardest part, especially when you have so many other things going on so invest in a personal trainer to help you achieve your goals. A trainer will do the leg work of planning for you and supporting you through your journey is worth the money.
-k eeping up the healthy diet to aid strong mental balance
KEY POINTS TO THINK ABOUT: -B e consistent -E at a fresh, healthy and varied diet of food -D o regular exercise -G et organised and start early, don’t wait until a few weeks before the big day -G et help sooner rather than later to support you
