Inspirational Women at Highfield In celebration of International Women’s Day this week, we unveiled our ‘Be what you want to be’ mural on Tuesday to celebrate our centenary year. Painted by local artist and exparent, Julia Wickham Smith, the mural is a focal point in the playground enabling the children to be surrounded every day by the concept of inspirational women.
I believe a key to education is that girls of all ages find inspiration and courage from diverse female role models and this is why we commissioned our fantastic mural, ‘Be what you want to be’. One hundred years on from women gaining the vote, there has never been a more appropriate time to celebrate the opportunities available to women today. It’s important to teach the girls to actively question and openly challenge stereotypes and bias because it helps forge a more inclusive world. We believe that as we are embracing our centenary it is important for the school to celebrate girls and women all over the world and think about the extraordinary women in our everyday lives. The mural depicts women of many cultures and professions from A for Architect to Z for Zoologist including famous women such as Malala Yousafzi. We invite mothers of our girls to come in to talk about their professional roles regularly so they can see real life examples of women in business. The most recent talks were given by Mrs Hart, a Nutritionist who has worked with Team GB athletes and Ms Ibrahim who works in Clinical Research. If you would like to come in and inspire the girls with the role that you do, then please do get in
touch with me at headteacher@highfieldprep.org.
Book Week As well as opening the mural this week, it has also been Book Week. Have a read of some of the exciting things the girls have been doing below.

Matilda Matilda, Murder Most Unladylike, Harry Potter – just some of the book covers that our classroom doors have been turned into this week as part of our Book Week activities. The undisputed highlight of Book Week for the girls in Years 3-6 was the theatre trip to see the multi-award winning stage production of Matilda the Musical. It was truly spectacular and captivated the girls throughout with its brilliant score, lyrical

The Day An Alien Visited Highfield On Monday, I shared with the girls and teachers the opening to a story about the day an alien visited Highfield, then I handed it over to them to write the rest. Throughout the week, the girls in each class (with a little bit of help from their teachers) wrote a chapter for the book and today we all came together to read it. You'd never believe quite how many adventures, how much chaos, how much laughter one green, slimy alien could cause in just one day at Highfield! Book Swap At the beginning of week, I shared with staff my concern that we wouldn't have enough books for Thursday's book swap I had no need to worry! By Thursday, over 424 books had been generously donated by your daughters, which made for a truly brilliant book swap. It was wonderful to see the girls eagerly

played The Abbey away. Having had a started particularly well testing The Abbey goalkeeper and slotting the ball in to the corner of the goal. The Abbey came back with some beautiful attacks but Mia in goal was ready and saved the day, creating a clean sheet. We scored a cracking team goal in the second half beating The Abbey 2-0. Girls of the game were Mia and Lily. In the B team match the girls had the majority of play but it wasn't to be, nobody could quite convert their attacking opportunities. However, in the second half The Abbey converted to end the game 1-0 to The Abbey. Girls of the game were Georgie C and Sophie S.
Visit from James Carter The girls had a huge treat on Monday morning when the inspirational and innovative James Carter came to visit, to officially launch Book Week. His lively, quirky show was bursting with poetry on all kinds of topics from wolves to science, electric guitars to lullabies for a woolly mammoth and all mixed up with guitar music aplenty to add to the entertainment. In his unique, creative style, James created a kenning with the girls and left them inspired to write more (maybe even for Mothers’ Day!). A splendid start to Book Week.
