Bonhams
1952 Ferrari 212 Europa (Lot 56)
1928 Mercedes-Benz 26/120/180-S-Type Supercharged Sports Tourer (Lot 34)
1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Sport Cabriolet Décapotable (Lot 49)
Bonhams 2021 Quail Lodge Auction is August 13 written by David M. Brown A 1928 Mercedes-Benz 26/120/180 S-Type Supercharged Sports Tourer is one of the stars of the 24th-annual Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction, 11 a.m., Friday, August 13, at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel. The event is held annually in conjunction with The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering.
Described as the “acme of motor car perfection,” the supercharged 1928 Mercedes-Benz is just one of 146 examples of the firm’s flagship automobile that was acquired by Al Jolson, the Marx brothers, and land-speed record holder, Sir Malcolm Campbell, between 1927 and 1930, explains Rupert Banner, Bonhams Group Motoring director.
The S-Type joins other fine collector motor cars, including a 1930 Bucciali Tav 30 Torpédo Sport Type Cannes ‘La Marie’, a one-off chassis showcasing the Bucciali brothers’ technical innovations, including Paul-Albert’s front-wheel drive patent. And, a restored 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Sport Cabriolet Décapotable, is one of only two surviving bespoke T26 Record Cabriolets designed by the celebrated carrossier, Figoni et Falaschi.
Ferdinand Porsche engineered the versatile car, which could perform superbly on the racetrack, at hill climbs or for inspiring road driving. In fact, the car won its class when it debuted at the Nürburgring. The Roots Supercharger could boost power from the 6.8-litre engine from 120 bhp to 180 bhp in seconds. “The supercharged S-Type is one of the legendary models of the Mercedes-Benz brand. This distinctive sports tourer has been part of the classic car community in America for more than five decades, always being awarded, prized and coveted,” Banner says. “Freshly repainted in the strikingly beautiful black guise, its sale provides a ‘baton-passing’ generational opportunity for a new collector to continue to show or tour this wonderful Mercedes.”
Two Italian classics from the ’50s are a 1952 Ferrari 212 Europa Cabriolet and a 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America. Featuring coachwork by Carrozzeria Ghia, the 1952 Geneva and Torino Auto Show car is Ferrari-Classiche Red Book certified and retains matching numbers. With coachwork by Pinin Farina, the Lancia is one of only 181 left-hand-drive examples of the sports car. And, from an actor who has given us many classics is Tom Hanks’ “silver bullet” 1992 33-foot Airstream Trailer.
Potential buyers can view the lots Wednesday, August 11, 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; Thursday, August 12, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and Friday morning, 8.30 a.m.–11 a.m.
Sports and race cars include a 1967 Ford GT40, one of only 10 fully evolved Mark IV 7-liter “J-car” variants, and three Shelby Cobras: a 1964 AC Cobra 289 and two 427 Cobras, one previously owned by Didier Pironi, winner of the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the second from a collection of the late Judge DiLoreto, a friend of Carroll Shelby.

Brown The 100th anniversary of the Lancia Lambda and the 50th anniversaries of the DeTomaso Pantera, Maserati Bora and Lamborghini Countach will be celebrated during the 35th Concorso Italiano, Saturday, August 14, 9:30 a.m.– 4 p.m., at the Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Course, 1 McClure Way, in Seaside, California. CI Club members are admitted at 8:30 a.m.
Wings of Humanity is holding its inaugural charity golf tournament at the Black Horse course, on Tuesday, August 10. The four-person scramble starts with breakfast at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. shotgun start, hosted beverage cart and an awards lunch. Sink a hole in one on the par-3 #17 and you win a golf trip to legendary St. Andrews in Scotland. All greens fees are tax deductible. Sponsorships are also available.
Approximately 4,000 attendees are expected to enjoy 800 cars and motorcycles of Italian origin at the event –– the world’s largest celebration of Italian car design and performance. “We focus on the cars, conversations between people who love and appreciate them and elements of that special essence known as ‘Italian Style’ including food, music and art,” says Tom McDowell, chairman for the Mercer Island-Washington-based event.
Ten marques are individually judged at the Concorso: Alfa, DeTomaso, Ferrari, Fiat/Abarth, Lancia, Iso/Bizzarrini, Lamborghini, Maserati, Motorcycles & Special Coachworks (Italian Designed Vehicles). Other classics regularly shown include Apollo, Bandini, Bertone, Cisitalia, Ghia, Moreti, Pagani, Ducati and Moto Guzzi. The judges select 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each marque; the 1st-place winners are eligible for Best of Show. The 2019 winner was the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet owned by Ron Corradini from Newport Beach, California.
Earlier that week, Wednesday, August 11, is the Connect2Cars, with an 8 a.m. breakfast at the Bayonet Black Horse clubhouse, featuring a “morning show”-type interview of industry figures. These include Wade Kawasaki of Legendary Companies/Coker Tires and recent SEMA Board member and Superformance owner Lance Stander.
On Saturday, food will be available in three ways: the CI Club Package breakfast from 8:30 a.m.–10 a.m. and lunch, 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.; al fresco lunch, 11–1:30 p.m. for $75 per person in addition to the admission to the event; and gourmet food trucks from the Monterey Bay area.
A scenic Monterey County drive follows, ending at a select winery for wine tasting and a lunch hosted by Solare Hemp. Registration for Connect2Cars is limited.

One of only 29 427 Cobra S/Cs built, the 1967 Semi Competition Cobra CSX3045 is the product of an exacting restoration by Robin Automotive in northern California, explains David Morton, manager of Communications and Event Marketing for Walworth, Wisconsin-based Mecum Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction company. Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Celebrates 70th Year August 15 written by David M. Brown The 70th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is Sunday, August 12, at The Lodge at Pebble Beach™, 1700 17Mile Drive.
Associated Concours events include the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, a 1,500-mile journey from Kirkland, Washington, to Casa Palmero at Pebble Beach, Monday, August 2, to Wednesday, August 11.
The world’s premier celebration of the automobile, the event showcases approximately 200 of the world’s finest collector cars, which will be judged and awarded in 30 classes, including Early Electrics, on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. This year, the 50th anniversary of the first “supercar,” the Lamborghini Countach, will be celebrated.
Also, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, August 12, presented by Rolex, is a noncompetition rally for approximately 150 Concours entrants along sections of 17-Mile Drive and historic Highway 1 and Big Sur, returning to Pebble Beach for the finish line. And, the 16th Pebble Beach RetroAuto is a curated collection of collectibles, automobilia, luxury goods and tools. The event is held at The Inn at Concours Village at Pebble Beach, August 12–14, 9 a.m.– 6 p.m. and Concours Sunday, August 15, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Begun in 1950, the Concours first showed new cars, based on the European model, but the event began to focus on collector cars in 1955. Experts critique elegance, technical merit and history as the vehicles compete to be named Best of Show — the ultimate award for automobiles. In 2019, that honor was given to the 931 Bentley 8 Litre Gurney Nutting Sports Tourer shown by The Honorable Sir Michael Kadoorie.
Finally, the Pebble Beach Car Forum, presented by AIG & Alliant, features prominent automotive people discussing topics of concern to collectors. This takes place August 12–14 9 a.m.– 6 p.m., and Concours Sunday, August 15, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
On Sunday, August 15, the field opens to car entrants at dawn. Ticket spectators are not admitted prior to 5:30 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., the judging begins, and at 10:30 a.m. the field officially opens. The awards are presented 1:30–5 p.m.
General admission tickets for the Concours are still available for $500 as of August 1: Stroll through the show field, visit manufacturer displays, bring a meal or purchase an al fresco lunch. Children under 12 are admitted at no charge when accompanied by a paying adult.
In addition to Best of Show, awards include the Ansel Adams Trophy, for the most desirable touring car in its era; the Art Center College of Design Award, the car that showed the best use of new technology in its era; the Briggs Cunningham Trophy, most exciting open car; the Chairman’s Trophy, his or her choice for the most deserving car; and the Phil Hill Cup, the most significant race car.

trends and other topics as well as the challenges and joys of car collecting. “Racing legends . . . join other royalty of the automotive world at the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum,” the Monterey County Herald has written. Past emcees and participants have included automotive writers, key industry figures, car designers and entertainment personalities such as Jay Leno, Donald Osborne, Spike Feresten, Adam Carola, Ken Gross, Bruce Meyer, Jim Miller, Paul Russell, Patrick Dempsey, Hurley Haywood, Jerry Seinfeld, John Elkann, Miles Collier, Craig Jackson and Ed Loh. In one session, McPherson College students joined Osbourne to discuss automotive restoration.
The annual events are held in conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which culminates Monterey Car Week Sunday, August 15. Approximately 30,000 people visit Pebble Beach properties during the concluding weekend, and 50,000-plus attend related activities such as RetroAuto and the Car Forum the week prior. A luxury marketplace for the automotive enthusiast, Pebble Beach RetroAuto is a curated event which offers collectibles, memorabilia and automobilia, auto parts, original poster art and posters, books and literature, fine art, photography, luxury items, technological tools and official Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance merchandise.
The Forum, also in Concours Village, is Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 12, 13, and 14, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and Concours Sunday, August 15, 8–6 p.m. Times vary for the sessions. Seats are limited, and reservations are required for the nonticketed event.
The schedule is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m.–6 p.m. on Concours Sunday. This special retail event is open to the public at no cost, but pre-registration is required.
“On our showfield, people expect to see cars they’ve never seen before –– and they will. But the Forum is a gathering of car lovers as well as cars. It’s a great way for our Concours attendees to delve deeper into cars and car issues of concern to enthusiasts,” the spokeswoman says. “The Forum provides the opportunity to meet and take part in conversations with individuals who have dedicated their lives to creating, racing and caring for great automobiles.”
“RetroAuto is the official automotive marketplace of the Pebble Beach Concours, and the event attracts enthusiasts who are looking for additions to their collections or the latest in auto-inspired necessities,” says an event spokeswoman.

Class winners are chosen by entrants in that class, and the Rolex Best of Show is named by all entrants participating in the event for the automobile that “stands above its peers in design, engineering, sophistication and presentation.” The 2019 winner was a 1931 Stutz DV 32 Convertible Victoria by Le Baron.
“What makes The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering a truly remarkable event, aside from the extravagant setting and fine culinary offerings, is its unbeatable selection of vehicles from a variety of genres, manufacturers and time periods,” says Kai Lermen, general manager of Quail Lodge & Golf Club. “Pre- and post-war sports and racing machines meet the newest innovations from leading manufacturers at our event. It’s a wonderland for the automotive enthusiast.”
Other awards include the Spirit of The Quail, for the car best representing the spirit of motoring, chosen by The Quail Motorsports Council based on design, driving experience, performance for its era, engineering innovation, and timelessness; the Octane Editor’s Choice Award to the car the editors “would most like to drive”; the FIVA/HVA Preservation Award for the best-preserved vehicle; and the Car Park

Collector Part Exchange
Chris Bright Co-Founder Collector Parts Exchange
New Startup Helps You Find the Right Parts for Your Collector Car Locating parts for vintage cars can test your patience. Collector Part Exchange aims to change that with a new online marketplace exclusively for the collector car community. The site launched in June and is headed by co-founders Chris Bright and Aaron Laliberte.
•The online marketplace is easy and Intuitive to use from the first visit. •The entire shopping experience is ad and sponsor free. "We've accumulated many parts along with vehicles we buy and sell and started a CPX store to sell them. Finding special parts is like discovering gold. Previously, you had to know someone with the same kind of car, or spend hours calling around the world to locate them. CPX fills a great need and should help reduce the cost of restoration. Less time will be spent chasing parts and more actually working on vehicles," said Bruce Trenery, Founder, Fantasy Junction.
Searching for these special parts can be frustrating and time-consuming -- especially in a world where we find and buy items with one click. Conversely for sellers, setting up an e-commerce site requires a significant amount of time and money. CPX will speed up the process by gathering the finest suppliers from around the world in one place. “The collector car hobby is experiencing continued growth fueled by a shift to online sales. Unfortunately for suppliers, who typically are specialized, small businesses, it is a big challenge to support online sales. We built Collector Part Exchange to bolster them with a no-risk on-ramp to online sales so they can meet their buyers where they are," said Chris Bright, Co-founder of Collector Part Exchange. "We also hope to encourage private sellers to clean out their garages to get more and more spare parts back into circulation."
"The response has been overwhelmingly supportive from dozens of sellers in America and Europe who are offering tens of thousands of items on our site, valued at more than $4 million. More parts are being added daily. We have complete Ferrari engines, custom-made upholstery, automobilia, and even a Project Cars section offering nonrunning vehicles. It will be 'the' place to find what you need. If you don't see it, try our Part Ping™ service to help locate the exact part" concluded Bright.
Collector Part Exchange was built on feedback resulting from hundreds of hours of interviews with parts suppliers, custom manufacturers, and restoration and repair shops. CPX is optimized for the collector car community's needs with the following key features: •Buyer/seller communication throughout the transaction. •Sellers offer items for free and pay a 5% commission when an item sells. •Powerful on-site search engine finds parts quickly. •Buyers purchase with confidence from a community of reputable sellers.
Monterey Car Week Guide 2021
According to Hagerty Insurance, the collector car community in the U.S. consists of 18 million owners and 31 million vehicles with a total value of more than $1 trillion. SEMA estimates that $890 million worth of parts for pre-1974 vehicles are sold each year in the U.S. When adding in global parts sales for pre-1990 cars, estimates exceed $2 billion. To learn more, visit www.collectorpartexchange.com or look for CPX at Concorso Italiano and other events throughout the week.

positraction rear end. The 390-horse block outputs 460 lb/ft of torque and does 5-second 0–60 runs.
Buy one or more raffle tickets to support the Ronald McDonald House Central Valley of Madera, south of San Francisco, and you may win one of three classic sports cars –– a 2021 Corvette, a 1967 Corvette and a 1970 Chevelle SS
Matching its interior, the convertible has a black top and comes with its original tank sticker, a matching auxiliary hardtop, side-mount chambered exhaust, power steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, Chevy Rally Wheels and power windows.
This year is the 28th that RMHCV has conducted collector car raffles. Each prize is a separate raffle. Donations start at $5 for a ticket, and the more you buy the better the deal: $10 for 5, $20 for 15, $30 for 22, $50 for 40, $100 for 100, $200 for 240 and $500 for 600. To enter, visit www.rmhc-car.com and insert code HIGHLINE for a special offer to receive double tickets with a $30-plus donation.
The Arctic White-on-black 2021 Corvette convertible carries the 6.2-liter V-8, producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb/ft of torque, and does 2.9 0–60 sprints through the 8-speed dual clutch automatic. The Z51 Performance Package includes a limited slip differential, Brembo anti-lock brakes and a Z51 rear spoiler. Inside are GT2 bucket seats.
RMHCV provides a “home away from home” for families while their child is being treated in a local hospital, explains David Ashjian, director of promotions for RMHCV.
Cranberry Red on black, the Chevelle SS packs a 396 CI V8 big block with a Muncie M20 4 Speed Manual Transmission. The powerplant generates 350 horses and the car accelerates from 0-60 in 6 seconds. It also features a functional Cowl Induction hood, original dash and dash pad, tachometer, gauges, AM radio and sits on brand new BF Goodrich Radial T/A Tires.
The house comprises 18 guest rooms. Each room is similar to a hotel room, with two queen-size beds, restroom/ shower and satellite TV. Guests share common areas such as kitchens, laundry rooms, playrooms and living room. Meals are often provided by local businesses, church groups, schools, clubs and other community organizations, he adds.
The entry deadline for the two Corvettes and the Chevelle is November 19. The winners will be selected on December 10.
“On days meals aren’t provided, there are fully stocked pantries that our guest families have access to,” Ashjian says. He notes that families pay nothing to stay; some remain for just a few days, while others stay for weeks or even months, depending on the severity of their child’s illness or injury.
“Because of the pandemic, we were forced to cancel many of our in-person fundraising events in 2020 and 2021,” Ashjian says. Support through our raffles helps ensure we can continue to provide a home away from home for families while they go through such a difficult time in their lives.”
Liveried in classic Rally Red, the 1967 Corvette has its numbers-matching 427-cubic-inch V-8, numbers-matching Muncie 4-speed manual tranny and the date-correct 3.55
For more information, see rmhc-car.com. If you have a car that you’d like to donate for a future raffle, contact David Ashjian at david@rmhccv.org and 559.905.6672.
