Brown After hosting the first Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes at the Safari Resort in Scottsdale in 1967, the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company was formed in late 1971 ahead of the company’s first auction in January the following year. This year, the event celebrates its golden anniversary, and Highline Autos recalls come glittering moments. Approximately 350,000 car lovers will visit WestWorld of Scottsdale, January 22–30, to celebrate a half century of automotive magic. The steel body shell incorporates an aluminum hood, doors, trunk lid, rocker panels, firewall and floor pans. This Gullwing was delivered to its original owner in Havana. Cuba, on June 16, 1955. Santiago ("Chaquito") Gonzales, a professional driver, raced it. At the 1957 Havana Gran Prix National Race, the car won and then again in record time at

the IV Classic Havana Rally. The second owner imported it to the United States in 1961. The car still has its original matching-numbers M198 3.0-liter SOHC inline-6 engine with Bosch mechanical direct fuel injection and dry sump lubrication; a 4-speed manual transmission accompanies this. In the 1990s, the third owner performed a full restoration, and the fourth owner did a second engine rebuild in 2003. The classic has 59,265 miles and will be offered at No Reserve. “We’re going to kick off 2022 with one of our greatest events to date, filled with prized collectible vehicles that are destined to be remembered,” says Steve Davis, Barrett-Jackson president. “I can’t think of a better way to speed into our next 50 years than with an amazing celebration this January.”

“Leo Gephart, my father and Tom Barrett worked together to develop the blueprint for the collector-car auction as we know it today,” recalled Jackson upon Gephart’s passing in 2015. “I grew up with Leo. He was an innovator and a visionary whose legacy will remain for years to come.” [Barrett-Jackson 50th-Anniversay Book] Well-known auctioneers, the Kruse family, were asked to help coordinate the event, which 3,000 attended. Russ’s wife, Nellie, added her accounting skills, having honed them at GM’s Fisher Body in native Michigan. Brian Jackson, 26, was deeply involved and Craig, then a teenager, coordinated parking and organizing the drivers who moved the auction cars to their spots. For the most part, the docket included prewar classics, especially high-profile 1930s cars. The two families placed personal cars — 50 from Barrett and 25 from the Jacksons. The headliners from Barrett’s collection were two MercedesBenz 770 Phaetons that had served as Third Reich staff cars, which attracted coverage by CBS News and anchorman Roger Mudd. One of these set a world record at $153,000. In all, the auction exceeded $600,000. For the next five Barrett-Jacksons, the auction continued at the Safari lot; the Al Beadle-designed resort was razed in 1999. In 1977, the Barrett-Jackson auction was held at the larger Phoenix Municipal Stadium, departing Scottsdale for a few years. The second year of that venue change, 800 cars were sold totaling $4 million. “Of course, it [the early auctions] was nothing like Barrett-

Jackson is today, but at the same time it was unique in its own way back at that time, as unique as it is today in the sense that it was exciting,” recalls Steve Davis, who attended his first Barrett-Jackson auction in the 1970s. “It was unique in the diversity of cars being brought together.” The great Scottsdale mayor, Herb Drinkwater, helped return Barrett-Jackson to Scottsdale, where the 356-acre Horseman’s Park had opened in 1982. In 1989, the first Barrett-Jackson Auction was held at the site, now WestWorld of Scottsdale; approximately 50,000 people attended, and sales totaled almost $30 million. Drinkwater declared this “Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction Week” –– a tradition every Scottsdale mayor since has continued. In 2016, the city revealed that Barrett-Jackson produced $167.8 million of economic impact and that the BarrettJackson Auction Company created 1,437 direct and indirect jobs for the Valley of the Sun. Jackson says: “We are honored to have consistently received the Scottsdale mayor’s recognition for our contribution to the community and honored to bring the national and international spotlight on Scottsdale year after year for another exciting Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction Week at WestWorld.”

Highline Autos car went to Andy Granatelli, CEO of STP and owner of Mario Andretti’s 1969 Indy 500-winning race car. In 1988, he purchased a 1932 Duesenberg Model J for $1.075 million. And, the following year, in Scottsdale, a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Roadster sold for $1.7 million. In January 2005, for the 34th Annual Scottsdale Auction, one of the post-war GM “dream cars,” a 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Concept, brought $3.3 million. A bidding war inspired the crowd and the television audience, and when the gavel fell, a new auction record was established, and the only car remaining of the original four became the highest-selling car ever at Barrett-Jackson at that time. “The F88 was the shot heard round the world when it came to putting concept cars on the map, realizing the history they represent,” recalls Davis.

GM’s great designer, Harley Earl, worked with Corvette masterminds Bill Mitchell, Ken Pickering and Zora Arkus-Duntov to create the Oldsmobile classic, “the XP-20 project.” “The Olds F-88 became one of the most historically significant vehicles of its era,” explains Jackson. “Many automotive historians consider the F-88 to be one of the greatest expressions of automotive design to ever come from North America.”

Two years later, Carroll Shelby’s shimmering blue 1966 Shelby Cobra, “Super Snake,” sold for $5.5 million, the highest priced car to that point at Barrett-Jackson –– “the Cobra to end all Cobras,” the great driver and automotive entrepreneur called it. No doubt: That personal car, CSX3015, has an 800-horse twin-supercharged 427-ci V-8 and can whip through 0–60 in 3.2 seconds, Shelby said. It remains the most-searched-for car on the Barrett-Jackson website. Shelby died in May 2012. During the 2015 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, the Super Snake found a new garage when it sold as part of the renowned Ron Pratte Collection, with a final price of $5.115 million. And, at the March 2021 Scottsdale Auction as part of a private collection, it brought $5.5 million once again.

“It’s one-of-a-kind; this is the only one like it,” Shelby told the Barrett-Jackson crowd in 2007. “I got stopped doing 190 miles an hour in Nevada in it. And I did kill a buzzard with it one time. Nasty, nasty.”

Charitable Giving is Always a Driver at Barrett-Jackson Charity initiatives have been on the Barrett-Jackson podium since the inaugural 1972 event. During the 45th-anniversary event in 2016, for example, the GRAMMY-award-winning Zac Brown Band performed at the opening-night Gala Event. All of the proceeds benefitted the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground, lead singer Zac Brown’s favorite cause. The camp helps children with developmental disabilities, underserved children and children from military families for week-long, inclusive residential camps as well as post-9/11 veterans at no cost with multiple programs designed to assist with workforce and wellness transitioning and those with PTSD and combat stress. Two years later, at the 2018 Scottsdale event, 10 vehicles were on the charity block. Former President George W. Bush, Jay Leno and Chad McQueen, actor Steve’s son, assisted on stage. Over the years, other high-profile guests have included Edsel Ford II, Roger Penske and Steven Tyler, who have donated time, vehicles and celebrity to help Barrett-Jackson help those in need. When a 2017 Ford GT brought $2.55 million, the company’s charity total topped $100 million in funds for worthy causes. That figure has since increased to more than $135 million. The former president helped sell VIN 001 of the 2018 Chevrolet Carbon 65 Edition Corvette, one of just 650 produced, donated by the automaker to benefit the George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Military Service Initiative. Appearing on the podium, the former president said, “I love our military and I decided to spend the rest of my life helping

vets.” Of the car, he added, “It’s a damn good car! Bid high; it’s a good cause!” And, when the winning bid of $1.4 million came in from John Staluppi, a noted car collector, philanthropist and longtime friend of Barrett-Jackson, the auctioneer said, “Mr. President, sell that car!” And the presidential gavel went down: a ’Vette for our vets. That 2018 event also marked the company’s first-ever yearlong charitable campaign for the American Heart Association, “Driven Hearts,” led by Barrett-Jackson vice president of Brand Strategy, Carolyn Jackson. The $350,000 sale of the Jacksons’ 1988 35th Anniversary Corvette contributed to that effort. Craig noted: “This has been an incredible decades-long journey for our company, driven by our tremendous bidders, consignors, sponsors, celebrities and the entire collector-car community, whose hearts are only matched by their generosity and outpouring of support.”

Collections & Cars Offered at the 2015 Scottsdale Auction, the Ron Pratte Collection might have been the most significant ever to that time. Making it particularly special was that the Arizona resident had acquired most of the 140-plus collector cars, trucks and motorcycles and more than 1,500 pieces of automobilia at Barrett-Jackson auctions. The collection sold for $40.44plus million.

Cared for and shown for years at Pratte’s neon-lighted hangar in Chandler, Arizona, the stellar garage included the 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special Motorama Concept Car, which sold for $3.3 million, and the one-off 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake, owned by Carroll Shelby, $5.1 million. The charity vehicle, the remarkable 1950 General Motors Futurliner Parade of Progress Tour Bus, raised $4 million with an additional $650,000 pledged, for a total of $4.65 million –– still the largest sum raised by one charity vehicle at Barrett-Jackson. And, in 2020, 21 cars, trucks and custom motorcycles once owned by actor Paul Walker came to Scottsdale. He portrayed Brian O’Conner in the six The Fast and The Furious films. Walker died in a car accident in 2013. Centerpiece of the collection were a quintet of 1995 BMW M3 Lightweights; Scottsdale 2020 represented the most M3 Lightweights ever sold at one auction. The top seller was a 1995 at $385,000, a world record for the model. “We were deeply proud to help continue Paul Walker’s legacy and offer his esteemed collection at our flagship Scottsdale event,” said Jackson. “It is our hope that these cars brought the same joy to their new homes that they brought Paul.”

Three years on, at the 2016 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am used to promote the 1977 film Smokey and The Bandit sold for a world-record $550,000. Helping out on the auction block was the star, Burt Reynolds, 80. Before his death in September 2018, Reynolds and his team prepared three remaining cars, all signed by him, to take to the 2018 Las Vegas Auction, which the actor and car lover had planned to attend.

Many Ways to the Magic In 1995, when Craig Jackson assumed leadership at BarrettJackson, Roger Werner and Bob Scanlon started an autocentric television channel, Speedvision. Jackson asked if the men would be interested in covering the auction, and in 1996 same-day tape-delayed highlights of the Scottsdale event were broadcast on the new network. Live coverage of the Scottsdale Auction began the next year. Speedvision evolved into SPEED and became Fox Sports1. In 2015, coverage of the auction expanded with the automotivecentric Velocity and Discovery Channel, providing more than 100 hours of both national and international live coverage. In 2020, FYI and HISTORY –– part of the A+E family of networks –– selected Barrett-Jackson to join their programming lineup.

Significant cars have always excited crowds and bidders. In 2013, the original 1966 Batmobile was sold, with great customizer George Barris helping to make his famous creation the second highest-selling vehicle ever at a Barrett-Jackson auction –– after Carroll Shelby’s personal 1966 Cobra Super Snake. The Batmobile, which appeared in the 1960s television series, would sell for $4.62 million and set a new world record for the highest price ever achieved by a TV/movie car. “The 1966 Batmobile is one of the most famous Hollywood cars in history, and it has become a true icon that has been carried from generation to generation of Batmobiles to follow,” Jackson said.

Cool ceramics New Range Rover SV is the first vehicle from Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) to carry the new ceramic SV roundel, which represents the SVO team’s design and engineering passion for modern luxury, performance and capability. The roundel introduces a simplified ‘SV’ model name that will identify all new Land Rover vehicles launched by Special Vehicle Operations in the future. Smooth, tactile ceramic is also featured inside, giving the gear shifter, Terrain Response® and volume controls an elegant cool-to-the-touch feel. These exclusive ceramic components are produced using the same techniques as luxury watch faces. The raw material is injection molded to shape, then sintered at 2,700+ degrees Fahrenheit. A precision grinder creates a perfectly even surface before the components are either diamond polished or sandblasted to achieve the desired gloss or satin finish. The whole process takes around ten weeks, including final quality inspection by hand. Ceramic coated finishers with an intricate, embossed mosaic pattern are also available as an alternative to wood or metal.

2021 SEMA Show was the Largest North American Automotive Trade Show Since the Pandemic Vehicle Reveals, New Product Debuts, Celebrity Appearances, Educational Seminars, and Business Deals Highlight the Four-Day Trade-Only Show photos by Matthew Fink SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) , the trade association representing the $47.8 billion automotive specialty equipment industry, concluded its annual SEMA Show Friday, Nov. 5, noting the end of the Show represented the successful conclusion of the largest North American automotive trade show since the pandemic shut everything down in 2020. “The industry was clearly excited to be back in-person at the SEMA Show, both to capture business opportunities and to network and celebrate the world’s greatest collection of innovation on wheels," said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “Our industry was waiting to reconnect, and the SEMA Show was a welcome homecoming after nearly two years apart.” More than 100,000 attendees, exhibitors, and media participated in the first full-facility event at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which includes 4.6 million square feet of convention space and an additional 2.2 million square feet of outdoor space. “We were excited to see our old friends and colleagues after being apart for so long,” said Kathryn Reinhardt, director of retail marketing, 4 Wheel Parts. “We did a lot of business at this year’s SEMA Show. As the first, large automotive trade show in North America since the pandemic, automotive manufacturers launched new vehicles, celebrities unveiled high-profile restyles, and exhibitors showed off their latest innovations. Celebrities and their vehicles were out in force at the SEMA Show, including Ant Anstead, host of Celebrity IOU: Joyride , showcasing a custom 1962 Buick that has been converted into an electric car in collaboration with American actor James Marsden. Comedian Jay Leno helped unveil a 1969 Ford Mustang restoration for singer Keith Urban in the Ford exhibit, and actor Sung Kang unveiled his Datsun 240z “Safari” in the Nissan booth. Not to be outdone, Toyota introduced its “TacoZilla” Tacoma truck camper, Chevy brought its “Chevy Beast” (a concept vision of the ultimate in high-performance desert running), Mopar debuted two customized concept trucks, and Lexus had the North American show premier of the new LXF Sport at the SEMA Show. The trade-only show brought manufacturers and buyers back together to experience the latest vehicle customization innovations to bring to customers in 2022. Trending at this year’s SEMA Show was electrification and electrified vehicles. Whether it was a modification for a new electric vehicle (EV) or the ability to modify an ICE vehicle with a new electric motor, exhibitors and builders demonstrated that the EV market is a growing segment for the aftermarket. A new area inside the SEMA Show, SEMA Electrified, included electric vehicles and products designed for modifying electric vehicles or converting vehicles to electric power. “Our industry has embraced electrification,” said Tom Gattuso, vice president of events, SEMA “We saw electric vehicles and electrified vehicles in every hall at the SEMA Show. Our industry is on the cutting edge of technology. Products you see at the SEMA Show often become standard and mainstream five to 10 years after it debuts at the Show.” Other SEMA Show highlights included the largest collection of Chip Foose-built vehicles featured in a special corral that highlighted some of the most influential and important vehicles created at Foose Design, a display of over 50 off-road racing vehicles ranging from motorcycles to trophy trucks in SCORE’s Baja 1000 Experience, an exclusive West Coast Customs Edition wide body kit on a Dodge Charger and a Dodge Challenger in the West Coast Customs Experience, and interactive driving demos in the Hoonigan Burnyard Bash and the Ford Out Front experience. Carroll would have driven, quickly, to this opening –– in, of course, a Shelby. The Segerstrom Shelby Event Center and Museum opened October 30 at 5 Whatney in Irvine, California. With the fourth-largest collection of Shelbys in the U.S., Ted and Rae Segerstrom’s venue showcases some of the rarest, lowproduction and valuable Shelby’s, including one-of-ones. “It’s a place to come see and learn about some history and to make memories with your events,” says Ted, who began the collection in 1986 when he purchased a 1967 GT500 fastback which he and Rae still own. They display it with 92 other Cobras, GT350s and GT500s, and Mustangs and the first of each Cobra series in professionally curated galleries. The Le Mans-winning Carroll Shelby (January 11, 1923–May 10, 2012) became a successful automotive entrepreneur after a heart condition unbuckled him from the driver’s seat. Matt Damon portrayed the legend in the 2019 film Ford vs. Ferrari. “The event center/museum has been a labor of love for both of us,” says Rae. “It’s our dream project and took us about four and a half years to complete a place of celebration,

education and preservation of Shelbys, and we are extremely excited to share the love and passion we have for Carroll Shelby, his cars, antique neon signs and gas pumps.” In 2016, the philanthropist couple purchased a 32,000-plussquare-foot two-story office/warehouse complex and three years later added a 10,000-square-foot converted office/ warehouse complex. The final 42,000-square-foot structure was designed by architect Ulf Henriksson, owner of the “The Scenic Route” in Pacoima, California, and built by contractor Tim Miller, principal of the Miller Development Company in Huntington Beach, California. The Segerstroms’ latest addition was Shelby’s personal 2006 Daytona created by Hillbanks Motors in Irvine. “There are a few double cars in the collection which we will be selling to pare down the collection a little,” he explains. Cars other than those by Shelby are also represented at the museum. One is Rae’s original gray 1956 Ford Thunderbird. And, the oldest is a 1942 Ford GPW Jeep. Ted: “Built from 1942–1945, Ford produced exact copies of the famous Willis Jeep for the war effort, except Henry Ford put his name on it everywhere possible –– including the original Ford tires.”

A 1969 Shelby GT350 convertible

Orange County, Meet Chicago He was born and raised in Orange County; she was born in Chicago, moved to California with her family in 1962 and then to New Jersey two years later because of her father’s job. She moved back to California in 1965 and has remained. The couple met in the 1970s. “I got into cars when I was working on the farm and helping the farm hands with the tractors,” he recalls. “After I was old enough to legally drive, my friends and I would go to the ranch to work on our cars, and the farm hands sometimes helped us out sometimes.” In turn, “I learned about cars because my dad felt that women/ girls should know about them as a just-in-case, so I wouldn’t get taken advantage of when I took mine in for service,” she says. Both have family histories of Masonic membership. As young people, she joined the Job’s Daughters and he the Order of DeMolay. After they married in 2004, he joined the El Bekal Shrine in Anaheim. Shriner’s support 22 childrens hospital across the nation, Canada and Mexico; these are free to the children and their

families. “We decided that the best way we could help our cause was to build something that would endure beyond our time and help support our mission,” she says. In the spirit of their charitable commitment, all net proceeds will benefit the Shriner’s Medical Center in Pasadena, which provides comprehensive medical, surgical and rehabilitative care to children up to 18 who have orthopedic conditions, burn scars and cleft lips and palates, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Also benefitting is The Carroll Shelby Foundation, which provides medical assistance for those in need, including children; the Children’s Organ Transplant Association; education opportunities for young people; and the Northeast Texas Community College’s Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology Center, she explains, adding that the museum is also working with former model and actress Kathy Ireland to assist her cancer foundation for children. The Segerstroms met Shelby in January 2004 when he signed the nose of their first Cobra, although they already owned a substantial collection of rare Shelby automobiles. “We were fortunate to see Carroll at various events throughout the years and get to know this iconic man,” he says. “We are thrilled to

share our collection with his fans, performance car enthusiasts and younger generations who are yet to learn how Carroll shaped the history of the performance cars and automotive industries.” The Many Joys of Shelbys The Segerstrom collection focuses on rare cars. For example, the collection contains the first of each series of Shelby Cobras, excepting #2000, the first one Shelby built. And, the 50thanniversary Cobras were produced in a very limited number, with only 50 being built for the 289 series and 50 of the 427 series. “We have the first of each series,” Ted says. Here’s a sampling of some others: •1966 Paxton Supercharged GT350 –– This was the first one produced and the only automatic transmission out of the 11 that year, Ted explains. It was Shelby’s daily driver: “Imagine him driving a 400-horsepower GT350 around Los Angeles back then!” •1966 Shelby GT350 Factory Drag Car –– This one of only four factory drag cars produced in 1966 and one of two just back from restoration. In 1965 four GT350 cars were produced by the factory as drag racing cars. “We have at least one of each of them from each year,” he says. “One is a world record holder car.” •The only two 1968½ Shelby GT500 KR convertibles –– The Segerstroms have five GT500 convertibles from this year,

three of them in Meadowlarks Yellow. Of the approximately 44 models produced that year, Shelby made only three with a yellow body, black interior, equipped with air-conditioning and a manual transmission and white top and only two were yellow outside, black interior, manual transmission, airconditioned with a black convertible top. “Called ‘the Twins,’ they have sequential VINs and Shelby IOD numbers, so are identically produced cars,” he says. In addition, the collection includes the only three GT500KR convertibles produced with white convertible tops, black interior, 4-speeds and air-conditioning. “We have all five of them in the collection,” he explains. •1968 GT500 KR red convertible with a white top –– “This is my most cherished car,” he says. “It was my youngest daughter’s favorite, too, but she passed at age 7 before the restoration was completed.” •1969 Jade Black Shelby GT500 –– “It’s a rare color on any Shelby, most particularly the 1969 GT500 convertible,” he explains. “This machine, in this color, equipped with the Drag Pack option and manual transmission, is the only such example ever produced.” •The only remaining 1968½ Shelby GT500KR HERTZ convertible –– In the Hertz rental display, the museum has all five colors of the 1966 GT350H cars which were available for rent in 1966 and a 2006 and 2007 GT350-H 5-speed Executive cars which were never rented. The 2006 is one of four produced, and the 2007 5-speed is one of 17 produced.

•The three lowest-production serial number Cobras in history –– The last series of Cobras are the CSX 1000 series. In the collection are CSX 1000, CSX 1001 and CSX 1002, which the Segerstroms purchased in 2004; it was signed by Shelby on the nose and driver side door. “From then on, almost every time he saw us, he jokingly mentioned that he hurt his back getting down to sign the door,” Rae recalls. •1999 Shelby Series 1 CSX5000 –– The museum has the first of each CSX series: CSX 3000, the first 427 Cobra; CSX 4000, the first fiberglass model, excepting CSX 4001–4010, which were 10 aluminum-body race Cobras. “Shelby had only sold three of those first 10, and we were offered and purchased the other seven serial numbers and have built out two so far,” he says. The SSEC’s CSX 5000 is the first one of the 5000 Series 1 models. Just 249 of the original run of Series 1s were made.

“After so many years of basing his cars upon other carmakers’ beginnings, Carroll Shelby decided he wanted to conceive and produce a car from scratch,” Ted explains. Finally, CSX 6000 and 7000 are continuation series; the collection has CSX 6000 and CSX 7000. The Segerstrom Shelby Event Center is available for special and private events including weddings, fundraisers, corporate parties, private gatherings, trade shows, new-product releases, classes, lectures, workshops and car shows.
