Representing the ninth special edition boat created from this partnership, the Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE is 51’ 5” in length and features an increased beam of 9’ 6” which allows 6 passengers the ability to be seated comfortably. The new boat offers an increase of over 30% greater surface area when compared to the existing 50’ Marauder, while still providing similar performance and an impressive 140 mph top speed through the use of a highly optimized composite structure consisting of carbon-fiber, Kevlar® and E-glass. Cigarette’s signature aggressive shoulders, which rise in the rear of the boat, also allow the integration of a large sun cushion on the flat exposed-weave carbon fiber hatch - despite the tall engines beneath - for maximum comfort and versatility when stationary.

The boat’s deck is constructed completely of carbon fiber to reduce the total weight and lower the center mass of the boat. Carbon Fiber is also used for the inner structural laminate of the hull, forward bulkheads, cabin liner, engine hatch, consoles and storage hatches to significantly reduce the overall weight. For example, the air intakes, which are over 7ft long and 14 inches wide, weigh only 4.4 lbs. Overall, the weight optimized Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE is over ten feet longer than the Cigarette Racing 41’ SD GT3 but it weighs over 5,000-lbs less. These sophisticated powerplants are dual calibration engines, which enable the operator to switch engine power levels through an electronic key fob. The Race Key fob unlocks up to 1,550 hp, requiring race fuel. The Pleasure key fob is used for operating at 1,350 hp with 91 octane fuel. A staggered engine configuration lowers the center of gravity by allowing the motors to be placed closer to one another, deeper in the vee of the boat, which improves dynamics and stability. At Silver Auctions AZ, a total of 357 vehicles crossed the auction block, with 198 of those sold, a strong 55.5-percent sell-through. The other top three cars were a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible Resto-Mod, $79,920, and a 1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Code Convertible, $75,600. “We were pleasantly surprised by the results we achieved during our January sale,” says Andy Stone, co-host for Silver Auctions AZ, “and with the interest shown from both consignors and bidders for our up-coming March 30 and 31 sale, it is sure to be another winner.” Among other cars shown at the Jet Center Event were a 1952 Lancia b52 pf200, a 2016 Ariel Atom 3s, a 1956 Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa, a 2012 Lamborghini Avendator and a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, the last gaining a seat from Bob Bondurant, who drove them competitively in the day. The World Champion driver, Paradise Valley resident and founder of the Bondurant Racing School in Chandler, chatted with event guests, accompanied by wife Pat. “We had a flight attendant escorting guests onto the G4 aircraft against the sun setting on the McDowell Mountains, the firing up of a drag racer, nitro added, with the audience wearing earplugs, and we raised money for respected charities,” says Scott Ingebretson, marketing director for Jet Center Events, based in Edmonds, Washington. “One person told us, ‘It’s the best hangar event we have attended.’ For us, there is no higher compliment.”

CONCOURS IN THE HILLS BREAKS DONATION, ATTENDANCE, SPONSORSHIP AND VEHICLE REGISTRATION RECORDS Written by Peter Volny Photos by David Urbanic Design by Matthew Cohn Concours in the Hills, Scuderia Southwest’s largest high performance, exotic and collector car event of the year, raised more than $117,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital during its Saturday, Feb. 10 show. The event celebrated its fifth year by smashing donation, attendance, vehicle and sponsorship records.
Concours in the Hills packed Fountain Park with 746 vehicles of all kinds, from classic American muscle to historic European sports cars, and everything in between – including a United States Marine Corps Viper helicopter, which was surrounded by Viper sports cars, and an Army Aviation Heritage Foundation Cobra helicopter, surrounded by about 30 Cobra sports cars. The show was opened by famous names in racing, including Bob Bondurant, Lyn St. James and Paul Tracy. Special features included a Jaguar D-Type, XK-SS and C-Type parked next to each other; a 1913 Bugatti Type 22 next to a contemporary Veyron; a LaFerrari next to the first Ferrari 812 Superfast in the state and a 2017 Ford GT. Racing cars included Jacques Villeneuve’s March Formula Atlantic car.
The event, free to spectators, required a minimum $60 donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in order to register a vehicle, though many donated more. Phoenix Children’s Hospital is Scuderia Southwest’s exclusive charity partner for 2018.
“Concours in the Hills is an incredible community event that just keeps getting better,” said Steve Schnall, senior vice president and chief development officer of Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Scuderia Southwest’s ongoing commitment to the health, hope and healing at Phoenix Children’s Hospital speaks volumes about its priorities as a car club and philanthropic juggernaut. We are incredibly grateful for our relationship with them.”
More than 20,000 spectators attended 2018’s Concours in the Hills, versus 15,000 in 2017. Scuderia Southwest also garnered 78 sponsors for the event.
“We are thrilled to see Concours in the Hills grow into a premier car show in just five years, and we could not have done it without the community,” said Peter Volny, marketing and media director at Scuderia Southwest. “From the members of the public who exhibited their cars to volunteers that donated their time, Concours in the Hills continues its charitable tradition with the help of many.”

Sushi Roku Unveils Seasonal Menu, Prepares for 10th Anniversary by David M. Brown Sushi Roku is on a roll. The 6,000-square-foot sushi bar and hip meeting place inside the W Scottsdale Hotel, 7277 E. Camelback Road, just east of Scottsdale Road, is continuing its successful spring menu, while preparing for a revived Sunday brunch, a 10thanniversary remodel, and, in October, 50-percent-off dinner specials four days a week to celebrate the landmark event. Under Executive Chef Joseph Castillo and General Manager Daniel Carr, Sushi Roku combines traditional sushi with California innovation, incorporating ingredients from Latin America, Europe, Korea, and Italy and Arizona, for rolls, entrées and new cooked robata items. Guests also enjoy a generous menu of sakes, wines, craft cocktails and beers, including a proprietary microbrew, Red Sun. Among the new drinks are the mescal-drenched Smokin’ Yuzu and The Bartender’s “Six” Cocktail, Sushi Roku’s Bartender’s Choice, the green tea-infused Matcha Mule, Everything Zen with Nigori Sake, Darjeeling Express, The Ish, with shishito peppers, and the Ginger Lychee Mojito. “It’s been one of our most successful years,” says Chef Castillo, a Pasadena, California, native who’s been in charge back of house since 2015. “I had the cooking seed planted young in me by my mom, who got me to attend classes at 5 at the local Bristol Farms market and taught me how to cook traditional Latino dishes Volume XV, Number 03
when I was 7. She knew so long as I could cook, I’d never be starving or have to settle for fast food.” After high school, he attended California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena, took a student job at an Italian deli and then moved to the Patina Restaurant Group, opening its restaurant in Disney Concert Hall (the great Frank Gehrydesigned building). He also worked for Tony DiSalvo at his Jack’s, across from the Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, although that restaurant is closed now. In 2005, he joined Innovative Dining Group’s Boa Steakhouse on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and also got an employee discount at the nearby Sushi Roku. “I became obsessed with sushi, ate my way through the menu and learned so much from the sushi chefs.” “The new menu has been fabulously successful for us,” says chef, who lives in Scottsdale. “I love it here in Arizona, the pace of life the weather and the sports.” Among the additions to the spring menu: the Octopus Crudo, with yuzu kosho olive oil and lemon; Tuna Tartare; the Avocado “Hanabi,” “fireworks” in Japanese, an innovative take on avocado toast; Chilled Roku Ramen, shrimp, sesame miso, cucumber and poached egg; the shareable Tuna Pizza, crispy mushroom, balsamic, wasabi, aioli and serrano; the Nova Scotia Lobster Tail; and Bamboo Rice Risotto, shrimp, scallop and truffles.

Two new Signature Rolls are the Gensai with seared togarashi salmon, kizami wasabi and avocado, and the Senshi, yellowtail with cucumber, avocado and a spicy aioli. Regulars, be assured you can still find favorite entrées such as the Grilled Salmon, cooked on Japanese Binchō charcoal, with wasabi yuzu creme fraiche, blood orange and fennel, and Bigeye Tuna Poke, with soy chili oil and sushi rice. At a recent trip to Sushi Roku, chef began our tasty sampling with the fabulous Brussel Sprouts. “This is a wonderful starter, with white truffle oil and salt to wake up the palate,” he explains. “You know there are great other dishes behind it, still to come. It’s been so popular, my staff hates me they have to make so many,” he says with a smile. The Hamachi Serrano includes garlic, yuzu ponzu, serrano pepper and the fish, from Fiji. “This is another great opener for you and your friends. With its flavors and textures, you’re ready for your next step,” chef explains. That “next” for us was the Toro Carpaccio, served with tamari soy, kizami wasabi and prized Oscietra caviar and blue fin from Spain. “This is the fattiest part of the fish and pure decadence,” chef says. “Guests love it.” One of the new offerings isn’t sushi at all: Katana Robata Skewers, named for the company’s well-known Katana restaurants in Los Angeles and the recently opened Chicago Katana. Foie Gras & Asparagus, with sweet miso; J-Dori Chicken, teriyaki; American Kobe Beef, black pepper sauce; Shrimp Bacon, Ebi bacon, chile garlic sauce; and Chilean Sea Bass, yakatori sauce. “The coals have been compressed in a vacuum and burn long without flames,” chef says. “So you get a mellow smoky taste, and the juice and flavor are sealed in.” This is very popular with the customers, too. “The skewers are for those who don’t like sushi, and they can order the Robata by the piece and mix and match.” A final entrée was a new roll, the Gensai, with seared togarashi salmon, kizami wasabi and avocado. Starting as early as 6AM, even though the show doesn’t officially open until 7AM running to 10AM, a steady stream of cars enters the enormous parking lot of the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center. Crowds of enthusiastic people are there that early to video the sights and sounds of these colorful, and often loud, high-performance machines.
The feature for February was a “Salute to our Police and Military” who brought out many very interesting vehicles including their Incident Command Center showing how they take control at emergency situations and a very spectacular Mustang which you would not want chasing you.
The show is arranged by nationality with rows for Italian, German, British and Asian cars plus a huge section for American cars and another for motorcycles. Want to see the latest and greatest Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren? How about the newest Ford GT or Corvette? Perhaps highly modified Mustangs, Camaros or Challengers are more to your liking. Then there are classics such as an ultra-rare and valuable, genuine 1955 competition MercedesBenz 300SL Gullwing. This show has them all and much, much more.

Highline Autos The Porsche motorsport department is presenting Weissach’s latest treat at the Geneva Motor Show: the 2019 911 GT3 RS with a race-bred chassis and a high-revving four-liter, naturally aspirated engine producing 520 horsepower and 346 lb.-ft. of torque. Based on the 911 GT3, the RS has been refined even further, combining the most powerful naturally aspirated engine ever fitted to a road-legal 911 with a suspension that features recalibrated rear axle steering tuned for maximum dynamics and precision. The new 911 GT3 RS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds quicker than the current 911 GT3 with PDK and 0.1 seconds quicker than the previous 911 GT3 RS. Top track speed of the 2019 911 GT3 RS is 193 mph. Following the launch of the 2018 911 GT3 and the 2018 911 GT2 RS, the new 911 GT3 RS represents the third road-legal GT model to be unveiled within a year. the design of the wide, weight-optimized body with its classic fixed rear wing. Like on the 2018 911 GT3, the front and rear fascia are made of lightweight polyurethane. Additionally, the front trunk lid and fenders on the 911 GT3 RS are made of carbon fiber and the roof consists of magnesium. Like on the 2018 911 GT2 RS, NACA ducts in the front trunk lid optimize brake cooling without increasing drag. The front fascia features a spoiler lip that is larger than on the previous model, increasing downforce in conjunction with the larger side skirts. At the rear, the large wing mounted on the carbon fiber deck lid works in combination with a rear underbody diffusor. The result: The 2019 911 GT3 RS produces more than twice as much downforce as the regular 911 GT3 at 124 mph. The race-inspired appearance continues in the interior: Full Bucket Seats with carbon fiber reinforced backrests provide a high degree of lateral support to suit the vehicle’s exceptional level of lateral grip. The most powerful naturally aspirated engine in a roadlegal 911 ever The four-liter, naturally aspirated flat-six engine from Porsche in the new 911 GT3 RS pushes the sports car to new limits: It delivers 20 horsepower more than the engine in the 2016 911 GT3 RS and the current 911 GT3. Plasma coated cylinder liners, a central oil supply through the crankshaft with larger bearing diameters, larger connecting rod bearings and the rigid valve train with shims to provide valve clearance compensation all carry over from the 2018 911 GT3. Capable of up to 9,000 rpm like the regular 911 GT3, the thoroughbred engine takes in ram air through openings in the rear quarter panels, and it is closely related to the unit used in current Porsche 911 race

cars. The unmistakable flat-six sound escapes the exhaust tips, which are made of titanium like the muffler itself. The engine is mated to a specifically tuned seven-speed PDK, which features performance-oriented gearing with the top track speed being reached in seventh gear, like all GT tuned PDK transmissions. Race-bred chassis Technology derived from motorsport ensures that the chassis offers exceptional driving dynamics. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), active engine mounts, rear axle steering, and the fully variable electronic locking rear differential with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) are standard. Ball joints on all suspension links provide even greater precision than conventional bearings with rubber bushings. Furthermore, the new 911 GT3 RS features new helper springs at the front axle, in addition to the rear. Forged lightweight wheels measuring 9.5 x 20 inches in diameter with newly developed 265/35 ultra-high performance (UHP) tires enhance agility and steering precision, while 12.5 x 21 inch wheels with 325/30 UHP tires mounted at the rear deliver excellent traction. Overall, the wider tires offer a significantly larger contact patch than those of the regular 911 GT3. Large cross-drilled grey cast iron rotors measuring 380 mm front and rear are standard, while the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake system with 410 mm rotors at the front and 390 mm rotors at the rear can be ordered as an option. The ceramic rotors weigh around 50 percent less than the castiron variants. Optional Weissach package and magnesium wheels for extra weight savings For particularly spirited drivers, the Porsche motorsport department has created an optional Weissach package to reduce the weight of the car even further. With this package, the front and rear sway bars and coupling rods, vehicle roof, steering wheel trim, and shift paddles on the steering wheel are all made of carbon fiber, reducing the weight by roughly 13 pounds. Optional forged magnesium wheels, weighing around 25 pounds less than the standard wheels, are available as well in conjunction with the Weissach package. When equipped with these options, the weight of the 911 GT3 RS drops to 3,153 pounds.

Pricing and availability The new 2019 911 GT3 RS is available to order now and is expected to reach U.S. dealers in fall 2018. The MSRP is $187,500, not including available options or the $1,050 delivery, processing and handling fee. The Weissach Package is available for $18,000. The magnesium wheels can be ordered for an additional $13,000 in conjunction with the Weissach Package and will be available at a later date.

Brown Approximately 10,000 car lovers are expected to enjoy 200-plus classics at the 14th-annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and the La Jolla Motor Car Classic the weekend of April 6–8. GreatGarages Power Play: Mark Pieloch’s American Muscle Car Museum by David M. Brown Mark J. Pieloch enjoys flexing his muscle cars, and he didn’t need George Atlas for directions. His American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne, Florida, southeast of Orlando, numbers 26 Yenko Chevys, making his the most extensive collection in the world of these signature Corvairs, Camaros, Novas and Chevelles. The collection of 281 American muscle cars also has more than 100 first-place national-show winning frame-off restored cars; 47 years of Indy 500 Pace Cars and Trucks, 1955 through 2017; 30-plus Shelbys, including a 2017; and eight Ford GTs, representing every color built. Sixty-three of the vehicles show less than 100 original miles, 36 between 100 to 999 miles and another 36 vehicles from 1,000 to 9,999. “I have made an extra effort to acquire low-mileage great-quality cars,” says Pieloch, a Melbourne, Florida, resident who has owned four pharmaceutical-industry firms in the last 30 years, five in various states and one now in Melbourne. “In this way, the cars show in the museum today much as they did from the factory decades ago.” Volume XV, Number 03
Still, excepting very low-mile vehicles, all of the cars are started and driven regularly on the expansive 42 acres of grounds, with tracks up to a quarter-mile in length. The other cars are also regularly started. To ensure quick starts for all vehicles, the museum uses CTEK chargers which incorporate a proprietary eight-step charging process to desulfate the batteries and maintain them in top condition. In addition, Pieloch’s collection has vintage balloon tire bicycles, auto-related neon signs, antique gas pumps, juke boxes, pedal cars, vintage soda coolers, motorcycles and other automobilia. The 501(c)3 private museum is about a mile and a half from Interstate 95, at 3500 Sarno Road, making it convenient for visitors to Orlando and other Florida cities. The 123,000-square-foot building incorporates a clear span ceiling, providing for minimal columns and expansive views of the collection. This includes 90,000 square feet of vehicle display area, an 18,000-square-foot showroom and a 15,000-square-foot maintenance and restoration facility.

Because of the green elements and coastal storm requirements, the building required two years for Melbourne-based Tom Davis Construction to complete. “We built it to withstand 225-mile-per-hour winds to protect our collection, our associates and guests,” Pieloch explains. “Because we are a private museum, we are not open to the public, but we host numerous nonprofit fundraisers, car activities, charities and educational tours for school-age children,” Pieloch explains, noting that approximately two of these are held each week. “We’ve had Porsche and Corvette autocrosses, numerous fundraisers for various nonprofit groups, free tours for Boy Scout troops, automotive students, special needs programs, Brevard County’s Pet Posse, veterans groups, the Air Force Thunderbirds and breast-cancer-awareness events,” he adds. “They have been very successful and have raised millions of dollars for worthy causes.” Cars Run in the Family “Our family was big on cars,” Pieloch says. Growing up in native Gardner, a city of about 20,000 people in northern Massachusetts, he was part of a car family. His dad and brother enjoyed restoring cars, his uncle owned a junkyard, and he collected Matchbox cars from the money he earned for his weekly chores, so everything was car-related connected. His first restoration was a 1967 Ford Ranch wagon. “I spent a lot of time, restored it and it was stolen,” he recalls. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and a master’s in Volume XV, Number 03
industrial pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston, he earned an MBA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. “I specialized in product development in my career and worked at first for a number of large companies, including what is now GlaxoSmithKline. I then opened my first company, focusing on research.” He started acquiring his cars in 2000. “I bought slowly and deliberately, some private parties some at auctions,” he explains. These include many examples of GM, Ford and Mopar muscle such as a ’69 Pontiac Judge GTO with Stage 3 Ram Air heads and a 1987 Buick GNX showing 12 original miles. He’s particularly proud of his Yenkos –– at least one for every year and body style built, including the first in 1969, Don Yenko’s personal car. Among the rarities is a Corvair, the first of the magical Yenko Chevy transformations: “This really represents what Don Yenko loved to do: Take a small displacement engine as in the Monza model and make it hum, working it to higher horsepower.” The museum also shows a Yenko Vega, which produces a potent 220 horses. “Our museum is a unique opportunity for individuals and groups to enjoy the great era of muscle cars up close, personal and behind closed doors,” he says. In 2010, the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) liked its looks, too, awarding it first place. “Elliot gave it to his son, Steve, as a high school graduation gift,” Pieloch says. “What a dad!” Steve then drove the car to and from Parson’s College in Fairfield, Iowa, a 1,300-mile one-way trip. “Average speed: “100-plus miles per hour with a few 160-mile-per-hour speeds,” Pieloch says. How many tickets? “None: He never stopped.” •1965 Shelby GT350 Prototype –– Committed to “Total Performance,” Ford turned to Carroll Shelby to transform selected Mustangs for performance models through homologation for SCCA competition. The first ten of these prototypes went to Shelby American’s Princeton Street shop in Los Angeles, and SFM5014R is the tenth, completed in January 1965. Fetchingly liveried in Wimbledon White/Guardsman Blue on a black interior, the feisty 289-cid/306-horsepower car is linked to a four-speed manual. Volume XV, Number 03
In 2006, Wisconsin Shelby specialist Randy Bailey completed a concours-level restoration, and the car was shown at the Shelby American Museum in Boulder, Colorado, and featured in the book Shelby Cars in Detail. Why the “R” designation? GT350 Chuck Cantwell has said, in part: “None of the first ten prototypes were built as either ‘S’ or ‘R’ designated cars . . . so it’s anyone’s guess why it was added. Maybe someone just got mixed up.” Nice mix-up. •1968 Yenko Camaro –– The Sequoia Green on black vinyl classic was one of the first group of 20 Yenko Camaros built this year and sold originally from Branine Chevrolet in Mulrane, Kansas. At the 2017 Amelia Island Concours, just past, it notched Best Muscle Car. This is the lowest-mileage Yenko Camaro known, with just 1,318 miles, Pieloch says. How? “In 1970, it was sold to A.J. Lancaster, a drag racer and Memphis Rodders club member who competed with it in NHRA. He stored the original engine,” Pieloch explains. “When he retired from racing, he had the original engine reinstalled, and that is what we have today.” •1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro –– Lemans Blue on Black

For three years, 1966-1968, the “Eight Ball” was the SCAA “A” class regional champion and won the annual N.C.R.S. •1970 Boss 429 Mustang –– One of the great muscle cars from Ford, Grabber Green on White Clarion interior, it’s propelled by the formidable 429-cid engine significantly underrated at 375 horses and connected to a four-speed manual transmission. Concorso Ferrari Returns to Historic Old Town Pasadena April 22
On Sunday, April 22, Old Town Pasadena welcomes the 11th annual Concorso Ferrari, which showcases the great marque, from mid-century purpose-built racers to contemporary supercars. Held on three blocks of Colorado Boulevard between Pasadena Avenue and Raymond Avenue, the open-to-the public event, 10 a.m.–3 p.m., displays Ferraris of all years and attracts 6,000 to 8,000 spectators. The annual event is sponsored by the Ferrari Club of America, Southwest Region. Chief judge Wally Clark will lead 30 FCA judges in selecting the best cars in 10 classes. Ferraris entered from 2007 and earlier are eligible for judging following Ferrari Club of America National guidelines IAC/PFA (International Advisory Council for the Preservation of Ferrari Automobiles). Awards will be Platino, Oro and Argenta based on a points score, starting with 100. Cars will be judged on authenticity, condition and presence. Other Prancing Stallions will be on Nonjudged display.
Last year, the Best of Show winner was David Lee’s 1967 275 GTB/4 and the Best on the Boulevard Earl Waggoner’s 1964 250 GT/L “Lusso.” Show entrants do not need to be Ferrari Club of America (FCA) members unless they are being judged. “One hundred and fifty of the finest classic and contemporary Ferrari automobiles, along with vendor display exotic vehicles: This is Ferrari Extravaganza,” says Tim McGrane, who coordinates sponsors for the Events International Company of Danville, California, and is executive director of the world-famous Blackhawk Museums, also in Danville. Assisting is Marv Landon, FCA-SW Region events director and Concorso Ferrari chairman. Bugatti Atlantic Wins The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award for 2017
A 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic was selected from among eight finalists for the third annual The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award during the Paris Rétromobile event February 8, the first time in the City of Light. Held at The Peninsula Paris hotel, the event showcased eight of the world’s finest classic cars — the best of show winners from the top international concours — which competed for the title of the most exceptional motor car in the world. The Bugatti is co-owned by the Mullin Automotive Museum and Rob and Melani Walton, and was named “Best of Show Concours d’Etat” at the 2017 Chantilly Arts & Elegance. Powered by a supercharged engine and considered by many to be the first supercar ever made, the winning Bugatti is one of four Type 57 Atlantic models ever produced, with Volume XV, Number 03
only three remaining. The vehicle was designed at the height of the Art Deco movement by Jean Bugatti, Ettore Bugatti’s son. He based the car on his 1935 Aérolithe concept car, which was riveted externally for fear of the magnesium-alloy body parts catching fire. Camry Takes on Fast Lane with New XSE Model Written by David M. Brown The popular Camry is now leading a double life. Showing the profile most recognize from 35 years of success in the United States — as the traditional family car — the Camry continues to sell briskly. From its other guise, more edgy, sexy and adventurous, the new Camry XSE is not immediately recognizable. Is this the car we all know, the family–centric Olds Cutlass of this era? Or is it a debut entry-level performance sedan? The new performance Camry XSE is propelled by a 3.5liter dual-overhead-cam, dual-injection V-6, producing 301 horsepower with 267 lb-ft of torque, linked to an eight-speed direct-shift transmission that’s equally committed to delivering good gas efficiency as well as superb responsiveness through the rpm range. As with the first Camry in 1983, the car is front-wheel drive. Today’s XSE delivers stop to 60 mph in an exhilarating sub six seconds, about two seconds quicker than the four-cylinderequipped base model. In the mid ‘60s muscle-car zenith, that was considered brag performance for a potent V-8, a Pontiac GTO, a big-block Corvette, a ‘Cuda. In the day, The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean would be charting songs about this. Yes, a Camry, with 26 miles per gallon, an estimated annual fuel cost for the average driver of $1,400 and “go” features such a Sequential Shift Mode for manual-like control without clutching and a Sport-Tuned Suspension for tight highway maneuvering and, well, a little safe fun. Compare the first LE Camry — “kanmuri” or “crown” in Japanese — available as a pre-production prototype in 1983, replacing the carmaker’s Corona, with a two-liter, four-cylinder single-overhead cam producing 92 horses at 4200 rpm and a four-speed automatic. That “Oh What a Feeling/Toyota” notched 52,561 sales in the inaugural year: a harbinger of its robust run since. The first Georgetown, Kentucky plant-produced LE was in 1989, with 115 horses; that August 29, the one-millionth Camry was sold in the U.S. With 255,252 units, the Camry was Toyota’s best-selling car. For the last 15 years, it’s been America’s best-seller. In January 2018, the redesigned Camry’s sales grew 21.3 Volume XV, Number 03
percent, says The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA), which releases monthly figures on vehicles manufactured by internationally headquartered companies available in the United States. “We are proud that the Camry remains the top-selling passenger car in the U.S., a distinction it held throughout 2017,” says Christine N. Henley, Western Communications manager for Toyota Motor North America in Torrance, California. The new Camry XSE shares the high-output V-6 with the slightly more expensive Avalon, the Toyota flagship model. “The engines are tuned differently for each model, hence the different power outputs, and the Avalon transmission is a sixspeed automatic,” she explains, noting that the rear suspension and stabilizer bar are also different for the Avalon. Other sport-design and performance components on the XSE are new character lines, 19-inch black machined-finish alloy wheels, a rear spoiler lip and a rear bumper with distinctive corner lines, smoke-tinted rear combination lamps, a diffuser and chrome-tip dual exhausts. Up front are large side intakes on either side of the lower bumper’s “catamaran-inspired” accents, a high and slim upper intake and a gloss black mesh grille, reminiscent of the company’s Lexus models. Our road-test Camry XSE had standards including Toyota Safety Sense, Entune™ 3.0 multimedia, with Bluetooth and GPS and available connections such as remote start and door unlock capability, vehicle status notifications, a guest driver monitor and vehicle finder. Among other upgrades in this car: the optional, and gorgeously rakish, Ruby Flare Red livery; Driver’s Assist Package, with the Bird’s Eye View Camera; and the Navigation Package with Entune™ premium audio and upgraded navigation. The Monroney delivered price: $38,230. The basic Camry starts at $23,495. Performance-minded Highline Autos readers might want to explore this enhanced Camry.
