HIGH POINT 2014 Men’s Soccer
UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book
Season Preview
The High Point men’s soccer team will try and rejoin the Big South Championship picture in 2014 after struggling through a difficult season one year ago. The Panthers return 10 starters from last year’s team and will look for a bounce back performance this season. “We are excited heading into this season,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “We had a bunch of guys that went through a tough season last year and really grew from that and carried those lessons on as they matured in the spring. We look forward to adding new talent to that group and blending them into a successful team.” High Point got off to a difficult start to the 2013 season and finished with a record of 8-83. After losing six of its first 10 games, HPU bounced back to claim five wins in its final nine contests, finishing at .500 on the season. The Panthers did well in conference play, going 6-2-2 to finish second in the Big South. Despite the team’s early struggles, High Point still pulled off some impressive wins including a 3-0 win at then-No. 15 ranked UNC Greensboro and a 2-0 win at home against Navy. “Last season was not the type of season we have become accustomed to here at High Point,” Fonder said. “We had a good league season and managed to finish second but we didn’t do as well out of conference as we have in years past. Our goal this year is to turn that around and be really competitive in the non-conference part of our schedule to prepare us for a strong Big South run.” The Panthers return 10 starters and 18 letter winners from last year’s squad led by leading scorer and All-Region selection Mamadee Nyepon. In addition to Nyepon, HPU also returns three other All-Conference selections in goalkeeper Kody Palmer and defenders Sonny Mukungu and Austin Yearwood. A talented group of 13 newcomers will join the returners to fill out this season’s squad. Included in the group are 10 freshmen, redshirt-freshman Tony Murillo, who sat out last season with an injury, and transfers Sean Cowdrey (Indiana) and Diego Suarez-Salazar (Queens University of Charlotte). “Hopefully we can take the veteran players and have them pass on their knowledge and experience to the young guys,” Fonder said. “As we grow throughout the season I expect the returners’ leadership qualities to guide this talented group to success.” High Point was picked to finish second along with Winthrop in the 2014 Big South Preseason Poll. The Panthers received 82 points and are tied with Winthrop for second in the poll. Defending champion Coastal Carolina was picked to win the league after reaching the Sweet 16 last season. High Point finished ahead of Campbell, Liberty,

Radford, Gardner-Webb, Longwood, UNC Asheville and Presbyterian College in the preseason poll. Goalkeepers High Point returns second-team All-Big South selection Kody Palmer in goal and will count on the redshirt-junior to anchor the defensive unit. “Our goalkeeper unit is very strong especially with Kody Palmer leading the way,” Fonder said. “We like both David Price and Cameron Zell as guys that can excel as they gain experience. Kody gives us a big athletic presence in goal, which gives us a belief we can keep a shutout right from the first whistle. He has really grown and matured over his first two seasons and we expect this to be his best summer yet.” Palmer battled injuries in his second year with the Panthers but still managed to earn AllConference honors after finishing with a 7-4-1 record and a 1.25 goals-against average. Palmer has accumulated 19 wins and 13 shutouts in two seasons at High Point and is currently first in the HPU Div. I record book with a 1.05 goals-against average. Freshmen David Price and Cameron Zell will battle it out to claim the backup spot behind Palmer this season. Price comes from Needham, Massachusetts where he played with the FC Bolts Celtic Academy. Zell is from Ringoes, New Jersey. He started his senior year at Hunterdon Central High School and posted 19 shutouts while allowing just six goals. GOALKEEPERS

Defenders The Panthers return a lot of valuable experience on the backline this season led by All-Conference selections Austin Yearwood and Sonny Mukungu. The depth and experience of the unit should make it one of the best in the Big South. “We like the pieces we have in the defense now we just need to figure out the best way to put them together to create the best defensive unit come the end of the season.” Fonder said. “I think we will play a variety of back fours early on to figure out which works best for us this season. We have a unique backline with a little bit of everything. This gives us the option to play a variety of players in the back to get a result.” Austin Yearwood (0g, 8a) returns for his junior season after earning second-team All-Conference honors in 2013. The left back was one of the best two-way players in the region last season, finishing among the conference leaders in assists while also playing strong defense on the outside. He is one of the Panthers top picks on free kicks and corner kicks. Senior Colscon Wiley (1g, 1a) will provide depth behind Yearwood. Wiley is a left-footed player who joined the team last season and provided a strong work rate on the outside. Sonny Mukungu (1g, 0a) was named honorable mention All-Big South after joining the Panthers and starting 15 games at center back in 2013. Mukungu is a strong defender who is very good at winning balls in the air. Junior Adam Storm (1g, 1a) is expected to partner with Mukungu this season in the middle. Storm is a smart player who reads the game well. He has seen time at both right back and center back as well as at defensive midfield in his first two seasons. Juniors Kevin Fallet (0g, 0a) and Erien Campbell (5g, 0a) will compete for time in the middle of the defense with Mukungu and Storm. Fallet started 13 games in his first season and is a physical defender who is very good at winning balls in and around

2014 Men’s Soccer the box. Campbell is a player who can play the ball out of the back. He has played all around the field during his time at HPU. The battle for the starting right back position is a tight one between three talented players in sophomores Chris Ramsell (2g, 1a) and Jonathan Ware (0g, 1a) and freshman Poli Rodriguez. Ramsell played in 17 games, mostly on the wing, during his freshman season and is dropping back to outside back where his athleticism and speed are major assets. Ware played in 12 games with five starts. He is a strong defender who can be counted on to join the attack from the back. Rodriguez comes to HPU from Katy, Texas. He is a dangerous two-way player that likes the ball at his feet. Senior Matt Donald (0g, 0a) and redshirtsophomore Diego Suarez-Salazar will provide added depth and experience to the HPU defense. Midfielders The HPU midfield features much improved depth this season despite the loss of All-Region selection Adam Sewell (3g, 3a). The unit is comprised of a talented mix of returners and newcomers that will battle for playing time in the middle of the park. “We have a lot of pieces in the midfield that bring a lot of different skill sets,” Fonder said. “We have experience and new faces that will combine to form our midfield. We also have a nice combination of ball winners, facilitators, direct attacking players and creative players. It is nice to know as a coach that we have those different options.” Redshirt-junior Cameron Foster (0g, 1a) and freshman Ebe Kudolo are expected to start the season in the defensive midfield positions in 2014. Foster joined the Panthers from VCU and performed well in front of the backline. He is a strong passer who provides quality link-up play between the defense and the attack. Kudolo comes from Accra, Ghana. He is a skilled twoway midfielder who is being counted on to play box-to-box for the Panthers. Pushing Foster and Kudolo will be sophomore Lolo Lauture (0g, 0a) and freshman Saad Acheampong. Lauture came

on strong at the end of the season with 11 appearances and three starts. Acheampng comes from Sokoban, Ghana and can fill the role of a ball winner in front of the HPU defense. Junior Ben Burdon (2g, 6a) returns on the right wing this season for the Panthers. Burdon started all 19 games and was a key attacking piece for HPU. He is a strong dribbler who likes to go at defenders and cut in from the outside. Freshman Avery Ryan will see time behind Burdon on the outside. Ryan is a speedy player from Florence, South Carolina who was ranked as one of the top players in his class in the Southeast by Top Drawer Soccer. Tony Murillo will slot in as the central attacking midfielder for the Panthers this season after being forced to miss 2013 with an injury. The redshirt-freshman is a former member of the US U-18 National Team and was ranked as the No. 15 player in the Class of 2013 by Top Drawer Soccer. Redshirt-sophomore Pat Shelton (6g, 1a) will also see time in the attacking position after earning All-Freshman honors a season ago. Shelton plays as a withdrawn forward who likes to find space on the edge of the box to unleash a powerful shot. Sophomore Renato Punyed (2g, 1a) will start the season on the left wing for the Panthers. Punyed appeared in 18 games with 12 starts as a freshman in 2013. He is a strong dribbler and passer who can cut into the box from the outside or deliver a dangerous cross. Freshman Irvin Ramirez will push for time behind Punyed this season. Ramirez comes out of the Houston Dyanmo Academy and is one of HPU’s most dangerous and creative players with the ball at his feet. Junior Collin Sweeney (0g, 0a), sophomore Brandon Sloan (1g, 0a) and freshman Michael Cusack will add depth throughout the midfield this season. MIDFIELDERS

this season. He will primarily be backed up by newcomer Sean Cowdrey from Indiana. The pair is expected to cover a lot of the heavy lifting up front for the Panthers. “We have a lot of talent up front with our forwards this season,” Fonder said. “Mamadee Nyepon has turned out to be one of the most talented players to join the HPU program during my time here. We knew we had a special forward when he joined us three years ago and his career has not disappointed. Sean Cowdrey comes in as the understudy to Mamadee. We think he can be a real good goalscorer for us this season and in the future.” Nyepon has 24 goals in the past two seasons and needs just five goals to become HPU’s Div. I career leading scorer. He is a complete attacker who can score with his feet and is dangerous in the air. Cowdrey joins High Point from Indiana this season and will see time up top along with Nyepon. He was a 2012 All-American who led the Metro DC area in scoring as a junior at DeMatha High School. Redshirt-freshman Yosef Teffera and Joe Tingey will provide added depth to the forward group behind Nyepon and Cowdrey. FORWARDS

Dustin Fonder
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Roanoke ’94 • First season at HPU: 2007
High Point University men’s soccer coach Dustin Fonder returns for his eighth year at the helm in 2014. In seven seasons, Fonder has amassed an overall record of 68-55-16 and a 33-17-9 mark in conference play. He was named Big South Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2010, making him just the third coach in league history to win the award in back-to-back seasons. Fonder holds the HPU Div. I records for overall wins, conference wins and wins in a season. The Panthers have .500 or better in each of Fonder’s last six seasons including a 12-5-3 record in 2012. High Point remained undefeated through the first 11 games of the season, starting 10-0-1, and earned its first-ever NSCAA national ranking. Redshirt-Freshman Kody Palmer was named the Big South Freshman of the Year, making him the the third HPU player to earn the award in the past four seasons along with Sloan (2009) and Sewell (2010). HPU enjoyed its best season in program history in 2010 with a record of 16-4-1. The Panthers also won their first Big South Regular Season crown, going a perfect 8-0-0 and becoming the first team to go undefeated and untied in the Big South while playing at least an eightgame schedule. HPU ranked among the top scoring teams in the nation, finishing fourth in the country with 49 goals. Karo Okiomah was named Big South Player of the Year and an NSCAA third-team AllAmerican after scoring 12 goals in just 16 games. The Panthers placed a program-high eight players on the All-Conference teams in 2010, including five who earned first-team honors. Karo Okiomah, Michael Chesler, Scott Rojo, Sloan and Fejiro Okiomah were all named firstteam All-Big South while Will Stewart, Ryan Bennett and Todd Ray were all named secondteam All-Big South. Prior to 2010, Fonder guided the Panthers to back-to-back nine win seasons in 2008 and 2009, twice-tying the teams’ previous Div. I 4
record for wins in a season. HPU lost just three games against Big South opponents in the two seasons, going 9-3-4 in conference play. After having 15 players named to the Big South All-Conference teams during High Point’s first seven years in the conference, HPU has had 28 players honored in six seasons under Fonder. The Panthers also have had their first Big South Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year and their first All-American under Fonder’s leadership. Following the 2012 season, Sloan was drafted by the Columbus Crew and became the first-ever High Point men’s soccer player to sign a professional contract with an MLS team. He was the third HPU player to be drafted by an MLS club, joining Rojo who was selected by Toronto FC in 2010 and Karo Okiomah who was selected by the Houston Dynamo in 2011. Fonder joined the High Point staff in December of 2006 after having served as the assistant coach at Elon for the previous four seasons. While with the Phoenix, Fonder helped with all day-to-day aspects of the team. He helped to build Elon’s men’s soccer program from an RPI of 165 in 2004 to its first ever top-25 national ranking in the 2006 season. Prior to his time at Elon, Fonder served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Roanoke College. He was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, fund raising and academic advising. He coached the 1998, 2001 and 2002 Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. While with the Maroons, Fonder coached thirty All-ODAC players, three ODAC Rookies of the Year and two ODAC Players of the Year. A 1994 graduate of Roanoke College, Fonder was a member of the Maroons’ men’s soccer team where he was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Following his collegiate career, Fonder played professionally both in the USISL and the NPSL from 1995-1999. In addition to playing for the Roanoke College soccer team, Fonder also starred for the men’s basketball team and is still the all-time as-
sists leader. For all of his athletic talents Fonder was inducted in to the Roanoke College Hall of Fame in 2006. Fonder is also very involved in the development of the game. He serves as the technical director for the Piedmont Triad Football club. He also is a head coach for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (’94 boys). Fonder has been married to his wife Kim for six years. The couple resides in High Point with their daughter Dakota and dog, Kobe.
