2014-15 Season Preview

The High Point University women’s basketball team reached new heights in 2013-14 with a Div. I program-record 22 wins and a third trip to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The goals are even higher for 2014-15 with the team being picked second in the Big South preseason poll and boasting two Preseason All-Conference performers in Preseason Player of the Year, sophomore Kaylah Keys and redshirt-senior Stacia Robertson. Keys and Robertson join an experienced core that includes all five starters and eight players from last season’s Big South Regular Season Champions. In all, High Point brings back 89.6 percent of its scoring and 83.8 percent of its rebounding from a year ago. HPU also welcomes in seven newcomers comprised of two junior college transfers, four freshmen and a senior walk-on. “We return all but three players this year and add a lot of new pieces,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “Obviously it will take some time to get the chemistry right and get us going, but we’re really excited. Our kids have seen success now so hopefully some of that will play into this year’s successes as well.” Keys, the reigning Big South Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Big South performer, is expected to play more off the ball this season after splitting time between point guard and off-guard during her freshman campaign. Senior Ashante Richard and sophomore Teddy Vincent are also back after joining the starting five last season. In the frontcourt, the return of Robertson boosts an already deep position. Robertson started every game last season, as did senior Latrice Phelps who is in her second year with the program after transferring in from Louisburg College. Sophomore DeAnneisha Jackson finished her freshman campaign by being named to the Big South All-Freshman team and rounded out one of the strongest frontcourts in the conference. Redshirt-senior Lindsay Puckett and sophomore Maja Michalska also return in the backcourt for the Panthers who will welcome guard Lydia Harvey and forward Aariel Allen as transfers into the program, in addition to four freshmen: guards Hunter Fleming and Kat Harris and forwards Kennedy Currie and Abby Tinsley. Katie Vincent, a senior on the HPU volleyball team, will also join the squad when the volleyball season ends. “Every year is different,” Hendrix said. “We’re starting from ground zero. After installing the new offense last year, we’re breaking it back down, going back to the basics and having everyone buy into it.” Hendrix, the 2013-14 Big South Coach of the Year, returns for her third season at the helm of the Panthers. Hendrix is 39-24 in her two seasons, including a strong 27-11 mark in conference play. She guided last year’s squad to a 22-11 record that included eight consecutive conference wins. The team won 13 of its final 14 regular season contests to earn the outright Big South regular season title and the top seed in the Big South tournament, where HPU reached the championship game.

Stacia Robertson

This year, the Panthers will be challenged with non-conference road tests at East Tennessee State, North Carolina State, Davidson, VCU and Nebraska. High Point starts the season on Nov. 15, hosting Brevard College and also welcomes William & Mary, Elon and UNC Greensboro to the Millis Center in non-conference action. FRONT COURT The Panthers’ three-pronged attack is back this season, buoyed by the return of redshirt-senior Stacia Robertson. The first-team All-Big South performer originally announced that 2013-14 would be her final season, but with a year of eligibility remaining she decided to return to High Point for 2014-15. Robertson was second on the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game and led HPU with 8.8 rebounds per game last season. She posted 10 double-doubles and currently ranks in the top 10 in career blocks, rebounds and field goal percentage at High Point. “Bringing Stacia back just adds another dimension to our team,” Hendrix said. “She’s the vocal leader for us on and off the court, and provides another presence in the paint.” Senior Latrice Phelps and sophomore DeAnneisha Jackson both return after solid debut seasons at HPU in 2013-14. Phelps averaged 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds in her first season in a Panther uniform and provided unmatched energy both on and off the court. “Latrice is more comfortable with a year under her belt so I expect big things from her,” Hendrix said. “She has the mid-range jump shot that makes her dynamic and explosive.” Jackson made quite the impression in her freshman campaign, posting the best single-season field goal percentage in High Point Div. I history at 57.5 percent. Known primarily for her defensive abilities, the Angier, N.C. native averaged 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds in 33 games.

Kaylah Keys

“DeAnneisha had a great summer,” Hendrix said. “She stayed here and got a lot stronger. She’ll be a low block presence for us, but will get out more in transition and catch and finish.” Joining the HPU post players are senior Katie Vincent, junior Aariel Allen, and freshmen Kennedy Currie and Abby Tinsley. Allen comes to High Point from Tallahassee Community College where she played two years and averaged 10.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. “We signed Aariel not expecting to have Stacia Robertson,” Hendrix said. “She’s once who likes the contact and wants to be on the block, but can step out and shoot the 15-to-17 footer.” BACK COURT High Point’s back court returns mostly in tact from a year ago. The Panthers return all three starters that emerged as key cogs down the stretch last season in sophomore Kaylah Keys, senior Ashante Richard and sophomore Teddy Vincent. Keys moved into the starting lineup for good on Dec. 6 and scored at least 10 points in 27 of the final 29 games of the year. She set HPU Div. I single-season records for scoring (583), made three-pointers (73) and made free throws (148). Keys averaged a league-leading 20.3 points per game against Big South opponents and paced the conference in free-throw shooting at 84 percent, the fourth-best percentage in school history. The Southaven, Miss. native also tied a school record by being named Big South Freshman of the Week seven times. “I think everybody knows who Kaylah Keys is now,” Hendrix said. “She led us in a lot of different ways last year. The best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores and already her leadership is so much better than it was last year. She’s dynamic and can do anything you need her to do.” Richard improved dramatically during a junior campaign that saw her start the final 20 games at point guard. WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

She averaged 4.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists last year and after moving into the starters’ role on Jan. 4, she posted averages of 5.5 points and 3.4 assists per contest. “I really think that if we don’t have Ashante Richard last year, we don’t win,” Hendrix said. “She makes us flow and has a basketball IQ probably better than anyone on the team. Her defensive presence is going to be key for us going into this year.” Vincent served as one of many outside threats for High Point, knocking down 33.8 percent of her shots from beyond the arc. Like Richard, she moved into the starting lineup on Jan. 4 and knocked down at least one three-pointer in 20 of the final 21 games. “Teddy is a three-point specialist who can knock it down from half-court if you asked her to,” Hendrix said. “She’s going to be a tough kid and a leader by example that’s going to go hard 100 percent of the time.” Redshirt-senior Lindsay Puckett and sophomore Maja Michalska also return after starting 11 and seven games, respectively, a year ago. Puckett provided 6.7 points and 2.2 rebounds as part of the wing rotation while Michalska ended up averaging 1.9 points per game. “Lindsay is a guard with her size that the league doesn’t really see,” Hendrix said. “She creates some mismatch problems offensively and defensively, she’s a longer guard that can get into some passing lanes. Maja brings a different dimension with her slashing style that we haven’t had in the past. Her pull-up game is probably the best on the team.” Junior transfer Lydia Harvey and freshmen Hunter Fleming and Kat Harris will join the Panthers in the back court this season. Harvey joins the program as a transfer from Iowa Central Community College where she averaged 17.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game a season ago. She ranked ninth in the NJCAA with 77 made three-pointers. “Lydia is another tough kid,” Hendrix said. “She’s not going to blow you away, but she’ll do a lot of little things and figures out a way to get it done.” Fleming comes to High Point from nearby Kernersville, North Carolina, where she was a two-time team MVP at R.J. Reynolds High School. Harris will battle for playing time at the point guard position this season. She arrives at HPU after averaging 13.0 points per game during her high school career and scoring over 1,000 points at New Hope Christian Academy. “Kat is going to push tempo and defend which will add to the pace and fit right into the way we like to play,” Hendrix said. “She’s going to help us out in the backcourt and play significant minutes for us even as a freshman.”

DeUnna Hendrix

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Richmond ’07 • First season at HPU: 2012-13

In her second season as the High Point University women’s basketball head coach, DeUnna Hendrix guided the Panthers to a 2013-14 Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and was named the Big South Coach of the Year. The Panthers advanced to the Big South Championship game and made an appearance in the Women’s NIT. HPU went 22-11 overall and 16-4 in Big South play in 2013-14. The 16 Big South wins were a program record and the 22 overall wins were the most in Div. I history. Hendrix instilled her up-tempo style and blue-collar defensive approach and led the Panthers to a record-setting season. HPU set a program record for scoring offense, averaging 72.6 points per game. Under Hendrix’s guidance, Kaylah Keys was named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Conference. Redshirt-junior Stacia Robertson also earned a spot on the All-Big South first team while DeAnneisha Jackson joined Keys on the All-Freshman team. In two seasons at High Point, Hendrix has posted a 39-24 overall record and an impressive 27-11 mark in Big South play. Hendrix also coached 2012-13 Big South Defensive Player of the Year Cheyenne Parker who led the NCAA with 4.5 blocks per game and set HPU single season records in points per game (17.9), rebounds per game (13.2) and blocks (130). High Point has had unprecedented success against Big South power house Liberty under Hendrix. HPU has won the last three meetings with Liberty at the Vines Center. High Point is the first Big South team to defeat Liberty at the Vines Center in 4

three-straight years since UNC Greensboro posted four straight wins at the Vines Center between 1993-94 and 1996-97. In 2013-14, the Panthers swept the season series from Liberty, becoming just the third Big South team to do so in the last 15 seasons. Hendrix was named the ninth head coach of the HPU women’s basketball team in May 2012. She was promoted to the head job after a year as an assistant coach at HPU, when she helped lead the Panthers to a 20-13 record and their second Women’s NIT appearance. As an assistant, Hendrix played a large role in the successful 2011-12 season. High Point had its second 20-win season since moving up to NCAA Div. I in 1999-2000. The Panthers’ 13 Big South wins were most in team history and HPU made it to the Big South tournament final for the third time. The team won a program-record nine games in a row in January. Hendrix joined High Point University in 2011 after four years as a coach at Jacksonville University under head coach Jill Dunn. The Dolphins advanced to the Atlantic Sun championship game in three out of her four seasons, including 2011. The team went 23-9 in 2007-08, the best overall record in program history. Hendrix was instrumental in helping Regina Omoite finish her career as one of the top floor leaders in the history of the program, setting records for assists in a career (459) and season (154). Prior to Jacksonville, Hendrix played at the University of Richmond under Joanne Boyle, who is now head coach at the University of Virginia. Hendrix was team captain and helped the Spiders to an NCAA Tournament appearance as well as the Women’s

NIT semifinals. The team posted two 23-win seasons. Hendrix earned her bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communications. Hendrix went on to play professionally for the Jacksonville Cougars of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League in the summer of 2008. It was the league’s inaugural season and Hendrix was elected team captain. Originally from Kokomo, Ind., Hendrix was a three-sport athlete during her prep career at Kokomo High School. She was a first-team All-State selection as a senior, leading her team to an undefeated season, a state championship and a No. 14 national ranking. She currently resides in Greensboro.
