Prospectus and Record Book

Season Preview The High Point University women’s soccer team enters 2015 looking to win back-to-back championships for the second time in program history after claiming their fifth Big South championship in 2014, tying Radford for the most conference titles. “I am very excited about this season,” head coach Marty Beall said. “When you win a championship every team is gunning for you the next year so that is something that we have to be prepared for. We will have to learn to play with a target on our back and come out at our best in every game.” High Point won an HPU Div. I record 12 games in 2014, finishing with a 12-5-4 overall mark. The Panthers went 7-2-1 in the Big South and entered the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. After wins over Winthrop and Coastal Carolina, High Point upset topseeded Liberty in penalty kicks to claim the conference crown. The Panthers return 24 letter winners and nine starters from last season’s team while also adding 10 newcomers to the squad. Fourteen of the 16 goal scorers from 2014 return this season, including All-Conference selections Jenny Marshall, Kelsey Perrell and Becca Rolfe. Marshall saw action in 16 games and tied for second on the team with three goals. Perrell started every game at left back for HPU and will be counted on to anchor the Panther defense along with senior central defender Amy Burch. Rolfe finished second on the team with nine points on three goals and three assists in her freshman season. High Point was picked second in the 2015 Big South Preseason Poll with one firstplace vote and 106 total points. The Panthers were slotted behind defending regular-season champion Liberty and were followed by Coastal Carolina, Radford, Campbell, Longwood, Gardner-Webb, Winthrop, UNC Asheville, Charleston Southern and Presbyterian College. GOALKEEPER Alex Persiani will take over the keeper role full time this season after splitting time between the pipes as a freshman. Persiani is an intelligent and athletic shot stopper who is poised to be one of the top keepers in the Big South in 2015. The sophomore played in all 21 games and posted a 1.09 goals-against average while making a team-high 42 saves. Persiani will be backed up by a pair of freshman keepers in Emily Lyon from North 2

Allegheny High School in Wexford, Pa., and Charlotte Kennedy from Webster Groves High School in Webster Groves, Mo. Lyon is an athletic player who possesses great quickness. Kennedy has shown a great presence in net with her positioning. “Alex is playing great in goal and she is being challenged by two outstanding freshmen,” Beall said. “That is really making her better which is making us better as a team. Alex is doing great and Emily and Charlotte are both great keepers. The three of them are developing a healthy competition.” GOALKEEPERS

DEFENDER High Point returns an experienced backline this season with three of the Panthers’ four starters from last year coming back. Senior Amy Burch returns for her fourth season as a starter at center back while senior Colleen Deardoff and redshirt-junior Kelsey Perrell are back at right and left back respectively. Burch will anchor the HPU defense in the middle. The senior provides the Panthers with a physical presence in the back who can win balls in the air and be counted on to provide solid marking in the box. She will be joined this season by sophomore Taylor Romano who saw time at both center back and defensive midfield in her first collegiate season. The Johnson, N.Y., native will combine with Burch to form a physically imposing central defensive pair. She is also one of the Panthers’ top free-kick takers. Sophomore Paige Lloyd will be counted on to spell Burch and Romano this season after appearing at both right back and center back as a freshman in 2014.

The Panthers boast a deep stable of outside backs led by returning starters Kelsey Perrell and Colleen Deardoff. Perrell earned her second All-Conference honor in 2014 after finishing with two goals and an assist out of the left back position while Deardoff played all 21 games with one assist. Sophomores Brooke Lazarus, Annie Redovian and Becca Sweredoski and freshman Callyn Loughrey will all compete for time at the outside back positions behind Perrell and Deardoff. Redovian and Sweredoski each appeared in 14 games during their freshman season while Lazarus saw time in just one game due to injury. Loughrey comes from HillMurray Catholic Benedictine Prep in Lino Lakes, Minn. She was a five-year letter winner and a three-time All-Conference selection. “We have a very experienced backline this season,” Beall said. “Amy and Taylor have developed a great partnership this past spring and in Italy over the summer. Amy is a key leader for us and is playing the best soccer of her career. Kelsey has been phenomenal this preseason and she is leading the outside backs. We have a number of positions that are competing for playing time. We have a lot of options and a lot of competition.” DEFENDERS

HIGH POINT 2015 Women’s Soccer MIDFIELDERS The battle for playing time in the midfield will be fierce this season as the Panthers return eight players who saw time in 2014 and add transfer Meg Kowalski from UMBC. HPU will rotate its midfield triangle this season with one defensive midfielder sitting behind two attacking midfielders. Senior Becca Lisson and redshirtsophomore Taylor Thompson will anchor the midfield in the defensive position ahead of the backline this season. Lisson started 18 games in 2014 and notched one goal for the Panthers. She is an intelligent player who is composed on the ball and excels as a facilitator out of the back for HPU. Thompson will push Lisson after starting 17 games last season. The Florence, S.C., native scored one goal in 2014 and provides the Panthers with a stellar option off the bench. Freshman Kendra Perley out of Kernersville, N.C., will add depth in the defensive midfield position. The two attacking midfield positions will feature several of High Point’s most talented players, led by returning All-Conference selections Jenny Marshall and Becca Rolfe. Marshall has been the catalyst for the High Point offense in each of her first two seasons and will be counted on to lead the HPU attack in her junior season. Rolfe broke onto the scene in a big way during her freshman season. She is a dangerous player with the ball at her feet, equally capable of putting a shot on target or delivering a pass to open the defense. A talented pool of players that include junior Kai-Lin Hernandez, sophomores Paige Rombach and Aley Kate McKinley and transfer Meg Kowalski will push Marshall and Rolfe. Hernandez is an extremely athletic player who played as both an attacking and defensive midfielder last season, finishing with one goal. Rombach played in 21 games as a freshman and finished with three goals and one assist. McKinley drops back into the midfield from the forward position where she scored two goals in 12 games. Kowalski joins the team from UMBC where she played in 35 games over two seasons. She has very good vision and is extremely skilled on the ball. “The midfield will be one of the biggest strengths of our team this season,” Beall said. “Becca Lisson has really solidified herself as a starter at the defensive midfield position and is working her tail off. We have outstanding depth and a lot of options at the attacking center midfield position. We are working through WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

FORWARDS High Point lost its top two scorers at the forward position in 2014 to graduation, but bring back a talented young core ready to step up and replace that production this season. Redshirt-sophomore Bailey Beattie and sophomore Bri-Jean-Charles are expected to start on the wings for the Panthers in 2015. Beattie is a speedy outside player who appeared in all 21 games with 13 starts last season and registered a goal and an assist. JeanCharles provides a mismatch out wide with her combination of height and speed. Her only goal of the season came in the Big South Championship, when she scored in the 87th minute to force overtime. Senior Courtney Butterfass, sophomores Meghan Beidleman and Meredith Dunker and freshmen Tyler Gordon and Emily Pius will all push Beattie and Jean-Charles for playing time out wide for the Panthers this season. Butterfass provides experience and leadership as the only upperclassman in the forward corps. Beidleman and Dunker are speedy wingers who can cut in from the outside with the ball at their feet. Beidleman made 19 appearances with three assists and Dunker had five points on two goals and an assist in 18 games. Gordon provides great pace and service on the outside while Pius excels with the ball at her feet out wide. Gordon is a two-time All-Area selection from Bradenton, Fla., and Pius was twice named AllState while playing for Stony Brook College Prepatory School in Setauket, N.Y. Sophomore Lindsay Elsen takes over the starting role at the target position. The 5-11 Elsen is a physically imposing player who excels at hold-up play and winning balls in the air. She played in all 21 games with three starts as a freshman and scored one goal. Sophomore Michele Micciche and freshman Savannah Stoughton will compete with Elsen for time in

2015. Micciche has great speed for the position while also being a physical player. Stoughton has prototypical size for the target striker position. She comes from Sonoma Academy in Rohnert Park, Calif., where she scored 130 goals and notched 91 assists in four seasons. “We have a lot of talented young players up top that need to step up this season,” Beall said. “We have amazing depth at the wing position with seven or eight players that can perform at a high level. We will be using a lot of them every game. We have three players battling for the center forward spot. All three bring different things to the table and will provide different challenges to opposing center backs. FORWARDS

Marty Beall

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Francis Marion ’03 • First season at HPU: 2009

Marty Beall is entering his seventh season at the helm of the High Point women’s soccer team in 2015. In his six seasons at HPU, he has led the Panthers to 57 wins including a 37-15-8 record in Big South play. He was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2012 after guiding High Point to its first outright Big South Regular Season Championship. Beall holds the HPU all-time program records for overall wins and conference wins. The Panthers claimed their third Big South Championsip under Beall in 2014 after defeating top-seeded Liberty in penalty kicks at the Big South Championship. High Point set a new program Div. I record with 12 wins on the season, going 12-5-4. Four Panther players were named to All-Big South teams with Alise LeCompte and Jenny Marshall named to the first team. HPU set a new program record for conference wins in 2012, going 8-1-2 in Big South play. The eight conference wins by High Point broke the previous record of six that was set under Beall in 2010 and matched in 2011. Becca Hemby tied to the HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals to lead the Panthers and was one of five HPU players to earn All-Conference honors. Beall began his tenure at HPU with a bang, leading the Panthers to back-to-back Big South Tournament Championships and appearences in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, High Point tied its own Div. I record for wins in a season with 11 and went 6-2-1 in Big South play to earn a share of its first-ever Big South Regular Season Championship. HPU then went on to win three-straight Big South tournament games by identical scores of 1-0 to secure its second-straight championship and its third in four seasons. Kelli Joline set an HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals, including one against Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and was named first-team All-Big South in her first collegiate season. In Beall’s first season, the Panthers recovered from a difficult start to the season and finished 4-4-1 in Big South play. High Point’s defense was a big key to the team’s improvement as the Panthers allowed just eight goals in their final 13 games and

4

carried a clean sheet through the entire conference tournament. Marisa Abbott set an HPU Div. I record with 134 saves on the season. Beall’s teams have prided themselves on defense in his six seasons, allowing just 55 goals in 70 games against Big South opponents. High Point set a new conference record with six consecutive shutouts in tournament games in 2009-10. Twenty-four players have earned All-Big South honors in Beall’s six seasons, including 10 first-team selections. Hemby, Joline and Sammy Vercellino all received three All-Big South honors under Beall Off the field Beall’s teams have demonstrated excellence in the classroom. The Panthers were awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award in five-straight seasons from 2010-14 and hold the highest GPA of any High Point team. Brielle Spencer was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2010 and 2011 while Hemby was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a first-team Academic All-American in 2013. Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from the Division II level to Division I. In his head coaching career, Beall owned a 56-44-7 record at FMU despite having to play outside a conference and consistently scheduling nationally and regionallyrecognized programs. During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons. Under his tutelage four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Independent team accolades. Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler, who established the program in 1995. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000. Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the

women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the FMU program in 1999. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels. He served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association and was the head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played one season for the nationally-ranked Montgomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md. He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is Assistant Director of Coaching at the Piedmont Triad Football Club. A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (39) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003. He and his wife, Paige, welcomed their first child, Callie Rae, in 2012.
