2015 Season Preview The High Point University baseball team reached new heights last season and will look to continue its ascension to the top of the Big South in 2015. The Panthers set a new Div. I program record for wins in 2014, finishing with a 33-22 overall mark and an 18-9 record in the Big South. High Point boasted the third best record in the conference, but entered the Big South Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The team advanced to the Big South semifinals before bowing out against eventual tournament champion Campbell. High Point earned a program-record five All-Conference nods as first baseman Spencer Angelis was named first-team All-Conference, catcher Josh Spano, outfielder Dane McDermott and starting pitcher John McGillicuddy were named second-team All-Conference and outfielder Josh Greene was named honorable mention All-Conference. The Panthers return 22 letter winners in 2015, including all five All-Conference selections. Angelis, McDermott, Spano and Greene will spearhead a potent HPU offense that returns seven of eight position players from last season. On the mound, McGillicuddy will combine with returners Cas Silber and Conor Lourey to provide the backbone of a dangerous pitching staff which will be further buoyed by the return of closer Joe Goodman from injury. Joining the returners is a talented group of 12 newcomers that will look to make an immediate impact this season. High Point was selected second in the Big South Preseason Poll, its highest selection in program history. HPU received two first place votes and 98 overall points to finish behind defending Big South Regular Season Champion Liberty. STARTING ROTATION The Panthers boast an experienced crop of pitchers in their starting rotation, led by returning Friday-night starter John McGillicuddy. Senior Conor Lourey and sophomores Cas Silber, Andre Scrubb and Peter Ripke also return after earning valuable experience last season. McGillicuddy burst onto the scene in 2014, his first season with High Point. The right-hander led HPU with 15 games started and went 6-2 with a 2.37 ERA in a team-high 102.1 innings pitched. McGillicuddy threw an HPU record three complete game shutouts on the season including a one-hitter against Coastal Carolina. Lourey was one of the most dominant arms in the Big South while pitching out of the bullpen for High Point last season. The 6-7 right-hander made 27 appearances for the Panthers and went 9-0 with a 1.48 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 54-2/3 innings pitched. He is expected to transition into a starting role 2015. Silber came on late in the season on his way to a Freshman All-American honor in 2014. Silber appeared in 22 games including four starts and finished
Josh Spano
with a 5-0 record and a 1.53 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 59.0 innings pitched. Against Liberty in the Big South Tournament, Silber pitched a three-hit complete game shutout with 12 strikeouts. He also set an HPU Div. I single-game record with 13 strikeouts in a start against Longwood just 12 days earlier. Scrubb appeared in 14 games with 12 starts during his freshman season, posting a 2-5 record and a 5.22 ERA. The big right-hander has an explosive arm and is in position to take a big step forward in his second year with the Panthers. Ripke pitched in nine games with seven starts during his freshman year. He finished with a 3.34 ERA while pitching 32-1/3 innings. He will once again factor into the picture as a midweek starter this season. Several new faces will look to break into the starting rotation for HPU this season in redshirt juniors Scot Hoffman and Jace Herrera and juniors Mike Hennessey and Tyler Britton. Hoffman went 2-4 with a 3.56 ERA at South Mountain Community College last season while Herrera finished with a 3.74 ERA at the College of Southern Nevada. Hennessey went 6-8 with a 3.19 ERA at Lake Sumter State College in 2014 and Britton finished with a 2.77 ERA at Pitt Community College. BULLPEN The High Point bullpen received a big boost with the return of redshirt-junior Joe Goodman from an injury that caused him to miss the entire 2014 season. Goodman is a former Freshman All-American and Stopper of the Year Watch List member who went 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA in 24-2/3 innings pitched as a sophomore in 2013. Returning to the bullpen along with Goodman are lefthanders Will Resnik and Jeremy Johnson. Resnik, a senior has been a key member of the bullpen for three seasons and enters his final collegiate campaign with 45 career appearances. Johnson, a sophomore, finished the 2014 season with a 4.50 ERA in 18 appearances. Two players that are expected to make an impact in the back end of the HPU pen are two-way freshmen Gage Rogers and Carson Jackson. Both right-handers have power arms and will see time on the mound in late inning situations.

2015 HPU Baseball CATCHERS Senior Josh Spano returns for his final season behind the plate for the Panthers this season. The 2014 second-team AllBig South selection started 54 games for HPU and finished with a .279 batting average, 31 RBI and 22 runs scored while hitting nine doubles and tying for the team lead with three home runs. He has played in 155 games over his first three seasons with High Point and is second on the team in career RBI with 72. Spano is one of the top defensive catchers in both the Big South and the Southeast region. He is a quality receiver with a high-end arm behind the plate. Last season, Spano threw out just over 40 percent of attempted base stealers against him, catching 19 of 47. Backing up Spano this season is freshman Spencer Brown who comes to HPU from nearby Chapel Hill, N.C. Brown was named All-State as a senior at Carrboro High School and hit .376 with 10 home runs over his prep career. Senior first baseman and junior utilityman Dominic Fazio could also see time behind the plate. INFIELD High Point will enjoy a great deal of consistency in its infield as the team brings back three of its four starting infielders from 2014. Senior Spencer Angelis returns at first base along with the middle infield combo of second baseman Chris Clare and Tony Fortier-Bensen. The Panther infield was one of the tops in the Big South last season, turning a conference-best and HPU Div. I program record 60 double plays in 55 games. Angelis is one of the top returning hitters in the Big South this season. The 2014 first-team All-Big South selection hit .390 as a junior last season and led the Panthers with 37 RBI, 37 runs scored, 15 doubles and three home runs. He has a skilled eye and a patient approach at the plate, which allowed him to draw 27 walks compared to just 16 strikeouts last season. Clare was one of the top freshmen in the Big South last season. He played in 52 games with 49 starts and finished second on the team with a .310 batting average to go along with 22 RBI and 28 runs scored. Fortier-Bensen started every game at shortstop in his first season with the Panthers in 2014. He is a skilled fielder who is able to use his 6-3 frame to cover a great deal of ground on the left side of the infield. He is also expected to take a step forward at the plate after hitting .223 with 21 RBI, 35 runs scored and two home runs as a junior. With the graduation of Kyle Brandenburg, HPU will turn to freshman Carson Jackson at third base. Jackson is considered one of the top incoming freshmen in the Big South this season He was a two-time All-State honoree at Melbourne High School in Melbourne, Fla., and hit over .400 in each of his final three prep seasons while compiling 121 career RBI. Fazio and sophomores Alexander Gross and Zach Vandergrift will provide depth at the corner infield positions this year while freshman Hunter Lee is expected to backup the middle infield positions. Fazio played in 34 games and hit .208 last season. Gross played in 24 games in 2014 and hit .219 while Vandergrift hit .235 in 11 appearances during his first collegiate season. Lee is a strong defender from Maitland, Fla.

Prospectus & Record Book OUTFIELD The Panthers have a good problem Dane McDermott in the outfield this season with five returners who could all push for starts in 2015. Senior Dane McDermott leads this strong group of returners that also includes seniors Cody Manzella and Brady Williamson, junior Tim Mansfield and sophomores Josh Greene and Brenden Rivera. McDermott is coming off a 2014 season in which he was named second-team All-Conference after playing in 55 games with 54 starts and hitting .278 with eight doubles, 22 RBI and 33 runs scored. He is a versatile defender that can man all three spots in the outfield as well as second and third base. Manzella played in 50 games with 45 starts and hit .253 last season with 17 RBI and 17 runs scored. Williamson came back from an injury that cost him the first half of the season to appear in 29 games with 28 starts and hit .278 with 10 RBI, 17 runs scored and two home runs. Greene was another in a crop of talented Panther freshmen last season, appearing in 51 games with 46 starts. Craig Cozart
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Central Florida ’96 • First season at HPU: 2009
The 2015 season is head coach Craig Cozart’s seventh at the helm of the High Point University baseball team. Cozart has a reputation for recruiting and developing pitching staffs. He has had 30 pitchers selected in the Major League Baseball draft under his guidance, including former Panther and current Cleveland Indian closer Cody Allen, who was drafted in 2011. Cozart was named High Point baseball’s fifth head coach in June 2008 and has led HPU to program records in wins and nearly every offensive category. He has helped guide the Panthers to their three-most winningest seasons in the program’s Div. I history and currently holds the HPU Div. I records for overall wins and conference wins. HPU has won at least two games in the Big South Championship four times in seven seasons under Cozart and in 2012 became the first No. 7 seed to advance to the Big South semifinals since 2000. The Panthers won a record 33 overall games in 2014, finishing the season with a 33-22 overall record and an 18-9 record in the Big South. The 18 conference wins were also a program best for High Point. HPU set a new Div. I program low with a 3.24 team ERA while also holding opponents to a .227 batting average. Conor Lourey posted an HPU Div. I record with a 1.48 ERA while going 9-0 in his first season with the team. High Point recorded just its second season with a .500 record or better in 2013, going 29-29 overall and 15-9 in the Big South. A record four High Point players were drafted in the Major League Draft following the 2013 season, including three pitchers. Jaime Schultz was selected in the 14th round, Jacob Newbery was picked in the 18th round, Sean Townsley was picked in the 25th round and Willie Medina was picked in the 31st round.
Asst. Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Kenny Smith 4
In 2010, Cozart led the program to its first winning season in the Division I era, posting a 31-29 mark (15-12 Big South Conference). The Panthers finished third in the Big South Tournament, the best-ever finish for HPU and set program records in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, stolen bases and walks. Cozart joined HPU in 2009 and led the team to a 21-32 overall record and an 11-12 record in the Big South Conference. The Panthers had a win over No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent HPU has ever beaten, and two wins over Coastal Carolina, which was ranked 14th at the time. Cozart came to HPU after 12 seasons at his alma mater, UCF, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant coach to associate head coach. At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455-274 overall mark during his 12 seasons. In his role as the pitching coach, Cozart built a tradition of pitching excellence. The Knights made five NCAA Tournament appearances during Cozart’s time and also captured four conference championships. Cozart’s coaching career at UCF featured six top-25 final national rankings, including a No. 7 finish in 2001 when the Knights boasted a program best 51-14 record that season. With a great eye for talent and an outstanding ability to develop pitchers, 36 of Cozart’s pitchers have signed professional contracts, including 30 in the Major League Draft. Cozart guided the 2008 UCF pitching staff to a No. 4 national ranking in strikeouts per nine innings after recording 537 strikeouts for the year, the second most in program history. Three pitchers from Cozart’s 2004 staff were drafted, including Matt Fox in the first round by the Minnesota Twins and Kyle Bono in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. Bono earned the largest signing bonus in draft history for an eighth-rounder. In
Assistant Coach Jason Laws
addition, junior lefty Jaime Douglas was a 26th-round selection of the Anaheim Angels. Fox and Bono were both named All-Americans in 2004. They formed one of the nation’s elite pitching tandems. Fox finished the year 14-2 with a 1.85 ERA while Bono was 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA en route to second-team All-America status. The pair was part of a pitching staff that finished 10th in the nation in ERA with a 3.42 mark. The 2004 UCF staff also shattered the school record with 13 shutouts. It was the second pair of All-Americans Cozart coached at UCF after Justin Pope and Jason Arnold earned the honor in 2001. Pope went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round, while Arnold was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees. An outstanding pitcher in his own right at UCF from 1993-96, Cozart earned second team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 1995 and was a three-time All-Academic team member. Cozart led the Knights in wins for consecutive seasons in 1995 (10) and 1996 (7) and finished his career second all-time in UCF wins (24), fourth in appearances (65), fourth in starts (40) and fourth in strikeouts (204). Cozart was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and three conference champion teams as a player for the Black and Gold. Cozart was drafted in the 45th round by the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and again in the 28th round by the San Francisco Giants in 1996 but decided to forego the professional ranks to further his education and begin his coaching career at his alma mater. Cozart earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in education in December of 1996 from UCF. He is married to the former Michelle Cutright, a UCF volleyball standout during the 1990s. They are the proud parents of three boys, Caleb, Jacob and Samuel.
