Schwartzwalder Kirsch Torte is a real show stopper of a dessert! Make the parts on one day and assemble on the next and it is very simple to make. It’s all in the prep. For the cake, spray four 8-inch round pans and line them with parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Separate 6 eggs, placing the whites in one bowl and the yolks in another. Sift together 4 tbsp cocoa and 4 tbsp flour with ½ tsp salt and set aside. Beat the whites with ½ tsp cream of tartar until fairly stiff then slowly add ½ C sugar, one tbsp. at a time. Set aside. Beat the yolks with ½ C sugar, add it all at once, until very light and pale yellow. Add 1 tsp vanilla and mix well then beat in the cocoa mix. Carefully pour over the whites and fold together until well blended. Spread in the prepared pans and bake about 20 minutes. This also makes a lovely chocolate roll when baked in a 10 X 15-inch pan. It will puff up, but will sink on cooling. Immediately remove the cakes and paper and cool on a rack. When stone cold, wrap paper and all in plastic. Open one 16 ounce can of dark sweet cherries and drain them, reserving the juice. Place the cherries on paper towels to drain overnight in the ‘fridge. In a sauce pan place 2 tbsp of the juice and 2 tbsp Kirsch (cherry brandy) add ½ C sugar and simmer over medium heat until very syrupy. Remove from the heat and stir in 4 tbsp Kirsch. Place in a covered bowl and refrigerate. To assemble the cake put 3 ½ C heavy cream in a large mixing bowl. Pour 4 tbsp Kirsch in a cup and add 1 packet plain gelatin. Let sit about

Black Forest Cherry Cake is the perfect holiday treat. 5 minutes until gelled. Place 4 tbsp heavy cream in a sauce pan and add the gelatin. Cook over medium heat until the gelatin just dissolves, do not boil. Immediately pour the gelatin into the heavy cream and beat until stiff. Add powdered sugar or Splenda to taste. Set aside. The gelatin stabilizes the cream, making it firmer so it can be refrigerated without losing texture for a day or so. This is a very old technique I’m afraid has been forgotten. Peel the parchment off one cake layer and center on plate. Brush, it copiously with the syrup, then add a layer of whipped cream. Add another layer, more syrup, cream, space the drained cherries onto the cream and cover them with more cream and another cake layer and so on!!! After all layers are stacked up, frost the remaining cream around the cake and chill. At serving time, you can add some grated chocolate to the top of the cake. Your grateful guests will probably wash the dishes in appreciation. Merry Christmas everyone!

Ritalin; Over-prescribed Happy Holidays! Shopp Earth and Dangerous As many as 100% of all children in second through fifth grade have been given prescribed the drug Ritalin, even though many of them probably don’t have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). That was the conclusion of researchers who published their findings in the American Journal of Public Health. According to Dr. LeFever, doctors are over prescribing Ritalin, which is a psychometric drug and a Class II narcotic. “It’s hard to believe this many children have the specific brainrelated problem called ADHD,” stated Dr. LeFever, an assistant professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Centre for Pediatric Research. Health care advocates say that doctors are routinely diagnosing children with ADHD even though there are no clinical tests for this condition. Instead, they find it easier to write a prescription for Ritalin than discuss diet or parenting skills with the child’s family. According to Peter R. Breggin, M.D., director of the International Centre for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology and faculty member at The Johns Hopkins University, “Ritalin does not correct biochemical imbalances - it causes them.” In his book, “Talking Back to Ritalin,” he notes that there is evidence Ritalin can cause permanent damage to the child’s brain and it’s function. “Pediatricians, parents, and teachers are not aware of these hazards because the ill effects of this drug has been ignored and suppressed in order to encourage the sale of this drug,” Dr. Breggin states. Damaging effects of Ritalin can include: • Decreased blood flow to the brain, an effect recently shown to be caused by cocaine where it is associated with impaired thinking ability and memory loss... • Disruption of growth hormone, leading to suppression of growth in the body and brain of the Child...

• Permanent neurological tics, including Tourette’s Syndrome... • Addiction and abuse, including withdrawal reactions on a daily basis... Dr. Nicholas • Psychosis R. Brown, (mania), depression, Timber linn insomnia, agitation, Chiropractic and social Clinic withdrawal... • Possible shrinkage 541-967-8060 (atrophy) or other permanent physical abnormalities in the brain... • Worsening of the very symptoms the drug is supposed to improve including hyperactivity and inattention... • Decreased ability to learn. “Ritalin and other stimulants are currently prescribed to millions of childre in the hope of improving their supposed hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity,” Breggin warns. He presents evidence that these drugs “work” by producing robotic or zombielike behaviour in children. This enforced docility and obedience can produce a few weeks of subdued behaviour but has no positive effect on academic achievement and no positive long-term effects at all. Ritalin’s lack of effectiveness has been proven by hundreds of studies but has not been revealed to doctors, teachers or parents. ”Parents and teachers and even doctors have been badly misled by drug company marketing practices,” says Breggin. “Drug companies have targeted children as the new market”... Breggin does not believe that mind-altering drugs are an appropriate approach to helping our children. Instead, he urges adults to learn to identify and meet the individual needs of the children in their care. Teachers who have been misled by Drug Company and government promotional campaigns for Ritalin and other stimulants have identified most children receiving Ritalin for treatment. “Educate – don’t medicate,” should be the motto of every parent or teacher who is tempted to resort to Ritalin, Breggin urges.

In the tradition of saving the best for last; December is a month of nearly nonstop celebrations. Many will travel to share this wonderful season with friends and loved ones. Whether you plan to go by land, air, or sea; remember to arrange for a sufficient supply of your medications. If you will be away from home for more than a few days; call your pharmacy as soon as the travel dates are known. A pharmacy technician can assist with getting prescription refills in the necessary quantities for the trip. This is particularly important if you will be leaving the country. Many medications are known by different names in foreign countries, or may not be available at all. While med-minders (plastic containers that organize medication by day or time of day) are very convenient, they may not be the best option for travel. Please consider these reasons for transporting medication in the original pharmacy packaging: You may come under the suspicion of TSA or Customs agents if you are carrying unlabeled tablets and capsules. As a side note; TSA will accept a pharmacy- labeled vial as part proof of identity in the event government ID is lost while traveling within the United States. If the med-minder popped open (leaving you with a pile of non-descript white tablets), would you be able to accurately replace the medication into its proper compartments? Would you

Home staging—where you decorate your house in an effort to entice buyers to bite—may seem counterintuitive at first blush: Why spend money on a place if you’re moving out? Simple answer: because it can get you more money for your home sale. And evidence shows it’s usually well worth the effort. On average, staged homes sell 88% faster and for 20% more than nonstaged ones, which is nothing to sneeze at. But just how much does home staging really cost? Here’s the scoop, so you can decide if it’s worth the investment for you.

How much does staging cost? Most stagers work with the knickknacks and art that the homeowner already owns. But sometimes they need to purchase new accessories, fresh towels, flowers, and/ or fruit, as these small touches make a big difference. How to save on home staging? You don’t have to stage your entire house from basement to attic. A great way to save money when staging is by only focusing on the main areas of a home. These are the rooms you spend the most time in—your kitchen, living room, dining room, and master bedroom. The biggest savings? Would you like more youthful, healthier looking skin while enjoying a Holistic Spa Treatment? Try one of the amazing Skin Care Clinic Treatments this month at River’s Edge. River’s Edge has added a Signature Holistic Ultrasound Facial to the menu. This safe, gentle, relaxing method is a fantastic alternative for treating acne, Rosacea, and is a top anti-aging option. If you’re looking for younger, healthier looking skin, our Ultrasonic Facial Treatment these treatments is a way to get facial tightening and contouring instantly. While having your Ultrasonic Facial treatment, water bubbles move with the flow of liquid across the skin. When they encounter regions of higher pressure, the water bubbles collapse, creating a kinetic force. Rapid oscillation of low frequency ultrasonic derma sounds interacts with the collapsed bubbles on the skin, which results in gentle and controlled exfoliation. Skin cells of the stratum corneum separate and lift away, assisting your skin’s ability for cell turnover and renewal. This treatment also rids your skin of bacteria and viruses, which helps control acne. Our Holistic Ultrasonic Facial is a three-stage system for gentle, exfoliation, molecular penetration and healing therapy to combat many skin conditions and concerns such as: • Reducing Wrinkles and the Signs of Aging • Acne Reduction and Reversal • Rosacea • Inflammation of Skin • Increasing Moisture Retention

Points for Profit meeting is Dec. 27, 2016 from 6-8pm at the American Legion Post 10-Albany. Qdoba will be catering, dinner starts serving at 5:30pm. To reserve dinner please RSVP by noon on Dec. 26, 2016 to info@pointsforprofit.org or call (541) 791-2901. For more information visit pointsforprofit.org.

What

is

This year you can make the season of giving mean more for you or your children by helping other, local children have a Merry Christmas. There are several opportunities to help others throughout Linn County. One that we love to work with is the Elmer’s Giving Tree. For over a decade, the Albany Elmer’s Restaurant has featured a tree in the lobby with children’s’ names on tags. Linn County’s Dar Merrill gathers the names of needy children in our area that are referred by schools, police and other contacts. They range in age between zero and 18 years old. The tree goes up the first week of December. You are welcomed to take more than one tag. All gifts must be brought back to Elmer’s Restaurant by December 15th (remember to bring the tag back with your gifts). When you look at the tags you are sure to be

touched because these gifts go to children who really need and appreciate necessary things that many of us take for granted. Often children have asked for socks, towels, and other basic needs, please get what is on the tag but feel free to add additional gifts (for fun and fancy) for the child that are age appropriate. Points for Profit businesses like Bi-Mart and Willamette Valley Christian Supply have joined forces with Elmer’s to give gifts or gift cards to help make certain all children receive something special. Elmer’s Restaurant manager Melinda Butler heads up the volunteers and staff to wrap the presents and match gifts to names. It is a fun night for everyone! Help Melinda and the Elmer’s staff make Christmas real for children in our local community. Visit the Albany Elmer’s Restaurant on Santiam Highway and take a name or two off the giving tree. Merry Christmas to ALL!

Children’s Christmas Party On December 17, the Albany American Legion Post 10 is hosting a Children’s Christmas party at Noon. All children newborn to ten years old with their families are invited to visit with Santa who will be reading the “Night Before Christmas” and give out gifts. We are inviting children and their families that may not have as merry of a Christmas due to hardships, NO child will be turned away. In addition to Santa, we will be feeding the children and parents. And we might even have a Karaoke machine for a children’s Christmas sing along. As the date draws near, we will be adding surprises to make this a memorable day for all. We would like to thank all of those who have donated toys and funds to help offset the cost of this function. We are continuing to ask for more

assistance with gifts. Our special thanks to Hertz Auto Sales and Hertz Car Care Center for setting up a toy drop and notifying the community of this event using their electronic board outside their building. Drop off your toys to either Hertz Car Sales or Car Care Center in Albany any time before end of day December 10th. In exchange you will receive a complementary car wash courtesy of our generous friends at Hertz! We can all do a little to make a big difference in the life of a child this Christmas. God Bless us every one. Respectfully, David Solomon Vice Commander Post 10

The State of Anarchy

Going

The definition of anarchy is a state of disorder due to absence or non-recognition of authority. Other descriptions are lawlessness, chaos, mayhem and turmoil. Anarchy is the absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal. Unfortunately, those that hold to these views often express them through violence, destruction of property and sometimes harming individuals knowingly and unknowingly. Sadly, the state of Oregon has recently experienced riots due to the election results. To clarify, not all the protests were out of control. Many came to peacefully demonstrate their disapproval of the election outcome. With that said, I’m deeply concerned for our culture and country. We are becoming more and more violent when we don’t get our way. This outward expression doesn’t solve any of our challenges as a community. It brings more division and animosity toward each other. I also believe that the media can often add fuel to the fire when it comes to major events. How then should we respond in light of what is happening in our culture and country? The Bible gives us important principles to live by that can help us in our current situation. • We need to remember to pray. “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may

lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the Keven knowledge of the Ferguson, truth. For there is one Willamette God, and there is one mediator between Valley God and men, the man Christian Christ Jesus, who gave Supply himself as a ransom 541-754-9295 for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.” 2 Timothy 2:1-6 (ESV) • We must submit to our authorities. “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Romans 13:1 (ESV) • We must remember God is in Control. “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21 (ESV) • We must respect one another even if we disagree. “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” James 4:1-3 (NIV) We must remember that all lives matter; therefore,

Medicare Basics Original Medicare consists of Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Medicare Part A provides hospital coverage. Medicare Part B provides coverage for doctor visits and outpatient care. Medicare Part A is premium free for most people because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes as an employee. Part B charges a monthly premium. Both parts charge additional costs such as deductibles, copays and coinsurance. People who are getting social security or railroad retirement benefits when they become eligible for Medicare are enrolled in both Part A and Part B automatically, however, you may decide to refuse one or both. Others must sign up. You can sign up for Medicare at Medicare.gov or at your local social security office. Most people accept or sign up for Part A because there

You can delay paying Donna R. the Part B premium and use your other Green Northwest coverage for your medical care. If you financial delay Part B, you can Services sign up when you 541-757-7701 leave or lose your employer coverage. Pay attention to timing, though, because you may be charged a penalty if you miss your enrollment window. TRICARE For Life TRICARE For Life is Medicare wraparound coverage for TRICARE beneficiaries. You are eligible for TRICARE For Life if you are entitled to Medicare Part A and have Medicare Part B, regardless of your age. TRICARE For Life is available worldwide. It offers secondary coverage after Medicare in the U.S. and U.S. Territories. In other overseas locations, TRICARE For Life is the primary payer. Jennifer Hinton, Accessories Manager for Rife’s Home Furniture

The holidays can be a busy and stressful time, especially if you are hosting this year. Here are some hosting ideas to help ensure your holiday is a success. Want to dust off that fancy table ware for the holidays? Not sure you have enough places at your table? China cabinets, buffets, sideboards, dining tables, chairs, and barstools come in so many beautiful and functional designs. Feel free to get creative! Use upholstered dining chairs that can double as extra seating outside of the dining room. Bench seating can be used at your dining table and after the holidays in an entryway or at the end of a bed. Want to offer your guests the perfect spot to enjoy the big game? Consider a TV stand with a fireplace insert. In a variety of styles, these multi-taskers offer beauty, warmth, and function. Power-reclining sofas or theater seating could make your family room the ultimate destination for loved ones to gather and celebrate.

It’s a cold but dry morning and you open the blinds to let some sunshine in and notice water has formed on the inside of your windows. It’s running on to the frame and on to your wood window sills. Not only is it unsightly but, over time, water can deteriorate the wood and create an expensive repair. It’s helpful to understand how condensation occurs and how you can prevent it. No doubt about it, the glass in your windows is usually the coldest part of your house. Even the latest energy efficient windows perform poorly when compared to an insulated wall or roof. The warm, moist air inside collides with the coldest surface in your home and water droplets form as matter of simple science. Most often this occurs in the rooms we use the most like our bathrooms and kitchens but is common in any room with a high degree of moisture in the air. Here are a couple of tips to

minimize condensation. First, make sure the air in your home circulates properly. Today’s homes are so well insulated and tight that moist air can’t Bryan escape as easily Smith, as in the past. Try Smith using your ceiling Glass fans in the winter so that they push the 541.926.4446 warm air back to the floor area. If you’re used to keeping the door shut on a rarely used room during the winter, open that door occasionally to increase air flow. Second, do your best to keep the humidity in the house at a normal level (ideally about 40-50%). Use the bathroom and kitchen fans to eliminate moisture in those areas. If you’re using a humidifier try turning it down slightly so less moisture is in the air. Poor circulation and warm moist air are the chief causes of condensation. Keeping them in check during winter will pay dividends for the overall health and comfort of your home.

Game Oh no, is That a Skunk?! By Dr. Eric Glaze, Albany Animal Hospital (541) 926-8817 We’ve seen a few dogs that have been hit with skunk spray recently. There are a lot of different home deskunking recipes out there and this is the one that I have found to work best: In a plastic bucket, mix well the following ingredients: • 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide • 1/4 cup of baking soda • 1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap (Dawn works well) For very large pets one quart of tepid tap water may be added to enable complete coverage. Wash pet promptly and thoroughly, work the solution deep into the fur.

Let your nose guide you, leave the solution on for about 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. Some heavily oiled areas may require a “rinse and repeat” washing. Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the eyes because it stings. If you have any cuts on your hands you might want to wear latex gloves for the same reason. After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water. Pour the spent solution down the drain with running water. Never store mixed solution in a closed bottle, sprayer, etc. Pressure will build up until the container bursts. This can cause severe injury. Once your dog is thoroughly rinsed you can then wash him or her with your regular scented pet shampoo.

A Shocking Surprise Homein an Old Book

Idea

Although I enjoy reading the latest bestsellers, and do my best to keep up with current literary trends, I also love reading older books. I figure that if authors used to be popular, but are now nearly forgotten, then they spoke well only to those of a certain generation. Therefore, these older novels are a perfect way to “time travel” to the past! From these books, I expect some element of quaintness, and usually a more innocent way of viewing the world, as well as the occasional deviance from modern social norms. These qualities give the modern reader a better sense of the world when the book was written. However, I was recently shocked by one of these old books. The book in question has the fantastic title of The Wonderful Electric Elephant. It was written in 1903 by the popular author Frances Montgomery, who is probably best remembered for her children’s series about a goat, Billy Whiskers. The set-up for the story is that a young man named Harold, while riding alone in the Grand Canyon, comes across a robotic elephant. He climbs inside and takes control (never mind how) and immediately begins a journey around the world inside this elephant which has all sorts of great gadgets, including skin which can transmit a deadly electric charge. The shocking part is this. One day, while pining for companionship, Harold comes

across some Native Americans. Here is his first thought: “Now for some fun! I’ll turn the electric current into the skin...I have a great mind to kill every one of them for I Scott never saw an uglier lot Givens, of painted devils in my Browsers life.” (p. 32) After this Bookstores, small feat of genocide, and fellow he discovers that they reviewer, had abducted a white daughter, girl, who decides to Amanda join our hero inside his Givens elephant. There are certainly other aspects of the book which make it quaintly unsuitable for modern impressionable teens, especially regarding gender roles, but this cold-blooded mass murder is beyond “quaintly politically incorrect.” Ultimately, however, the story is enjoyable despite the dark cultural undercurrents. This is, after all, an important transitional book in the history of science-fiction. Generally, this kind of scientific adventure story was relegated to dime novels, but Electric Elephant is a nicely bound hardcover complete with numerous plate illustrations. The sequel, in which the electric elephant is taken on a tour of the solar system, is even more in the science-fiction genre. Old books make for great holiday gifts: they have a charm not often matched by modern publications. However, if you should happen to receive one that doesn’t quite fit with your view of the world, just remember that you can learn from the ugly parts, and enjoy the rest.
