Mom With Tea Area Farmer’s Market
Spring is in the air with even a taste of Summer. What better way to get ready than at your local Farmer’s Market? Whether it is a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a fresh baked loaf of bread, local honey, fresh eggs and meat, or the nursery plants, you can find them all at the Farmer’s Market. Each market has a unique feel all its own. This time of year, the markets are predominately plants. If you are looking to plant one plant or hundreds of plants, you should be able to find what you want. Plus, you can talk with the person responsible for the plants the other 6 days of the week. The knowledge of the vendors is one of the best parts of the markets; they can assist in helping you determine how many of Where Day and Time each type of Albany Saturday 9am-1pm plant to get, Brownsville Thursday 3-7pm how much Corvallis Wednesday 9am-1pm space the Corvallis Saturday 9am-1pm plant requires, Independence Saturday 9am-2pm if it likes sun Lebanon Thursday 2-6pm or not, and Rickerall Sunday 9am-3pm more. Anyone Salem Monday 10am-2pm who has Salem Wednesday 10am-2pm ever gotten Salem Saturday 9am-3pm overwhelmed Sweet Home Tuesday 2-6pm by zucchini can benefit from the vendors knowledge. Early in the season the number of vendors at the markets are smaller and as the season progresses, more and more vendors join in the fun. Look for plants and produce that are locally in season at the Farmer’s Markets. You won’t find oranges
or bananas except in baked goods. If you love to preserve food, the markets are an excellent way to stock your pantry. Get plants in the spring to grow your own food or, if ground space is limited, you can buy the raw ingredients when they are ready. Look for the Power of Produce program at the Albany’s Farmer’s Market. Market days in July and August will feature free tokens for children 5-12 years to spend at the market and additional activities. The video at http://youtu.be/JkXZATbO3Pg explains the program. Some of the markets have programs in place to help stretch the food dollars of low income families. Funding has been provided for the Double Up Food Bucks, this allows Where Season customers City Hall Parking Lot April 16-Nov 19 using SNAP Corner of Park and Main Late April to Oct 26 benefits Corvallis Waterfront April 16-Nov 19 to receive Corvallis Waterfront April 16-Nov 19 a limited Umpqua Bank Parking Lot April-Nov matching Corner of Grant and Main May 19-Oct 20 amount when Grange Hall Parking Lot May 1-Nov 20 they use Salem Hospital (Oak st) May-Sept their card. Teapots are a great collectable and make the perfect Mother’s Day gift.
by Karen Rogers Mother’s Day is the perfect time to throw a surprise tea party for Mom! But first you need a spot of tea history. In 1847, Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, tired of waiting long hours for a fashionably late dinner instituted an informal snack session that became a national obsession in England- the tea party! This is the perfect time for one, so invite Mom, Grandma, daughter, niece, friend, or Fairy Godmother, and enjoy their company. First though, bake up a batch of this issue’s Apricot Amaretto Hazelnut Bars. Pardon the shameless plug! Teapots have been around for centuries, so there are plenty. They originated in China and Japan, and ancient ones are enormously expensive. Europeans began to make them in the 1600s. The earliest were round with stiff little spouts. Styles changed about every fifty years, becoming bulbous, growing legs and rising on pedestals. I think that over time, they have been made in every imaginable form- I have on in the shape of a ship with the name “Teatanic” on the bow! When you find one, always check the spout first as it is the spot most likely to be damaged. Also, give the body a light tap to make sure there aren’t any hidden cracks. Once you have your pot, you can start obsessing about all the tea accessories that are available, and there are millions of them! I prefer fat, happy teapots to some of the overly gussied ones, and I love a good Darjeeling tea. Remember, there are many types of tea, each has its own distinctive flavor, and it’s fun to try them. So race out and get some good loose-leaf tea, gather friends, and party hearty!

Apricot Amaretto Hazelnut Bars

By Karen Rogers
This recipe started out with toasted almonds until I ran out one day and substituted hazelnuts instead. Oh My!!! They are so much better! Get some inexpensive Amaretto liqueur, since it will be used in cooking, cheap works. First, make the filling- finely chop enough apricots to make 1 C, tightly packed. Do not use a processor as it will make a gummy mess and ruin the processor. Combine in a pan with 1 C water, ¼ C sugar or Splenda and ¼ tsp almond extract. Simmer until tender and the water is absorbed. Add 1/3 C Amaretto and set aside. While the apricots cook, toast 1 ½ C whole hazelnuts at 350 degrees about eight minutes. Remove and cool slightly. Chop half coarsely for the topping. Line a 9 X 13 inch pan with parchment paper. Grind the other half of the nuts finely in a processor and add ½ C sugar or Splenda, ½ tsp salt and process again. Now, scrape down the machine and add 2 ½ C flour. Mix and add ¾ C cold butter cut in1/2 inch pieces and process until crumbly. In a cup, beat 1 egg and 1 tsp vanilla and ½ tsp almond extract and add to the machine with the motor running and mix well. Measure 3 C of the mixture and

spread it evenly in the prepared pan and press down well. Bake at 350 degrees for ten minutes. Remove and spread the apricot filling evenly over. Sprinkle the reserved chopped nuts and the remaining crumb mix over and press down lightly. Return to oven and bake about 25 minutes until lightly browned. Remove and cool on a rack. While it’s cooling, make a glaze of 1 ½ C sifted powdered sugar and ¼ C Amaretto. While still lightly warm, spoon the glaze over the bars and cool completely. These smell so good, the last part will be hard, if not impossible! These keep well and will last for several days, refrigerated. I guess that’s so, but it has never been put to the test!

Thinking of Buying and Selling? How Do You Start?
New to Medicare?
Preparation for enrollment into Medicare plans
Travel
Let’s recap from last month: 1) recognize you have a Medicare Initial Enrollment period (your first time opportunity to enroll), 2) Know the dates and keep the date on your radar, 3) Enrollment periods – if you missed your Initial Enrollment Period. How much will Medicare cost me? If you have worked at least 10 years, then you will have a Medicare Part A Premium Free, or you could qualify for “premium free” through a spouse credits. For Medicare Part B beneficiaries eligible in 2016 will pay $121.80 per month. You must have Medicare Part A and Part B in order to be eligible for a Medicare plan. How do you pay your Medicare Part B Premium? There are three ways to pay. The first one is to pay from your Social Security benefits – it is an automatic deduction from your benefits. The second is to delay receiving your Social Security benefits and pay quarterly. Medicare will send you an invoice reflecting the quarterly payment due. That would be $121.80 per month times 3 months equals $365.40. The third way is to set up Medicare Easy Pay. There is a form you can download from the Medicare web site to set up an automatic withdrawal from your checking account and Medicare will take out the $121.80 monthly.

Okay, now you have Medicare Part A and Part B and you are ready to consider the plans available for Medicare beneficiaries. There are many plans and types of plans to consider. Donna R. The Medicare Green Supplement plans Northwest (Medigap plans) help financial to fill in the gaps with Medicare Part Services 541-757-7701 A (hospitalization) and Part B (medical/ doctors). There are Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan F, Plan F Select, High Deductible Plan F, Plan G, Plan K, Plan L and Plan N. Plan F is the most popular plan, since it pays all expenses that Medicare Part A and Part B does not pay. The Medicare Supplement plans follow Medicare – Medicare pays first for each benefit claim, and then the Medicare Supplement plan will pay secondary. There is a chart found in the Medicare & You publication from Medicare that will help you understand the differences of the plans and what they will pay. As an Agent, I am here to help you as well. These plans have premiums per month based on the plan. Premiums can vary per insurance carriers, yet all Plan F plans, for example, will have the same benefits as regulated by Medicare. Do you get in your car and drive around? Do you surf the internet? Do you call an agent you already know? Do you call an agent from a sign? In the next few months, we will walk you through the complete process from the very beginning to the end in a multi-part series on the home buying process. Let’s start with: “how do you know you’re ready?” Starting the process can be tricky. Did you wake up one day and decide today is the day? Have you been thinking that you have out grown your house, or that maybe you are tired of paying rent every month? Where do you start? The very first step is to call a Real Estate Agent. Ask yourself, “do I know anyone in Real Estate?” Do I know anyone who has recently bought or sold a home? Most would answer yes to either of those questions. The best way to find an agent is to get a referral from someone you know, if

Slug it Out with Spring’s Slimy Pests CORVALLIS, Ore. Follow the glistening trail and you’ll find the gardener’s most familiar, frustrating and certainly slimiest pest, the common slug. It’s spring, after all, and as soil temperatures start to climb, slugs rise from their winter hiding place underground to munch tender seedlings, emerging perennials and even seeds. “What slugs want is a place that’s warm and moist,” said Claudia Groth, an Oregon State University Extension Service master gardener. “That’s why they’re coming out now. The soil temperatures are getting to be above 50 degrees, which is perfect for them.” Slugs aren’t crazy about winter and summer. They bail from cold or hot weather, but fall and spring are agreeable seasons for slugs. In the perfect conditions of autumn when the heat starts to wane and the first rains come, the mollusks lay eggs in clusters called clutches, according to Groth, a horticulturist who has made slugs her specialty. The eggs hatch fairly rapidly, and the fast-growing slugs wait it out, showing up in spring to scrape and shred plant leaves with tongues lined with thousands of tiny, extremely sharp teeth. “In fall, you’re trying to kill them off before they lay eggs,” she said. “Now that your plants are poking their heads up, you need to protect them,
because once the leaves are nipped, the damage is there all summer.” The pests are particularly fond of lettuce and other salad greens, broccoli, beans, hostas, strawberries, primroses and daffodil flowers. More sturdy plants like ferns, sedums, ornamental grasses, bleeding heart, heuchera, hellebores and most herbs fend them off reasonably well. Woody plants are also usually unbothered. Since slugs go on attack at night and look for protected places during the day, you’ll find them under ground covers or mulches and in thickly planted perennial or annual borders. “Many gardeners grow plants tightly in their beds to keep weeds from growing,” Groth said. “That’s an environment that provides them with a 100 percent hiding place all day.” Slugs will crawl beneath almost anything where it’s dark and moist, including boards, bricks, pots, loose stepping stones and pavers, and debris left lying in the garden. “So the first thing to do when starting a control program is to clean up the garden,” she said. “Don’t leave things all over the yard. They can even hide under garden gloves.” Raise pots onto bricks or “legs” purchased for that purpose. Pull mulch away from favorite plants. Remove weeds where the pests like to nestle down. Tidy under porches and other raised structures.
Business
Although sanitation is the first line of defense, there are plenty of other methods for control. Get started now. Young plants are most susceptible. Here are Groth’s recommendations: • Water in the morning. “If you water in the evening, it’s wet until early in the morning and you’ve given them the best environment when they come out at night hungry,” she said. • Put out beer traps. Use a pie plate or bury a plastic yogurt or margarine container up to about an inch from the rim. Pour in beer. Remove dead slugs daily and refill with beer. • Don’t use salt. It can build up in the soil and damage plants. • Attract predators such as frogs, ground beetles and, yes, snakes. • Create an artificial hiding place by placing a board in their favorite places. To make it especially attractive, grind up lettuce and brewer’s yeast (not baker’s yeast) and put that under the board. In the morning, lift the board and remove slugs. Drop them in a bucket of soapy water. • Go out at night with a flashlight or head lamp and handpick them. • Get a duck, which will make a quick dinner out of slugs, but be sure to check with your city first. Some don’t allow them and there are

restrictions. • Tape a wide (3-4 inches) strip of copper around the top of a pot or the top edge of a raised bed. • Also, use bait. There are two types. One is a synthetic bait that contains metaldehyde, which is toxic to humans and can be fatal to dogs if eaten in large amounts. The other contains iron phosphate, which is considered very low in toxicity, according to the National Pesticide Information Center at OSU. It can be used around pets and wildlife and in organic vegetable gardens. When baiting, scatter rather than making piles or bands. “If you use piles or bands,” she explained, “slugs can go right by. If you scatter, they’re likely to encounter it.” Also, be sure to look on the label to see how much to use per square foot. It’s a lot less than most people think. Using more is not better.

the scientists at their downed helicopter, the monster looked and walked like the TV kid’s dinosaur “Barney.” Spielberg allegedly said that if that was still the state of special effects, he didn’t Rick want to make the Rogers movie. Fortunately, Movies computer animation and DVDs had come along and our “Jurassic Park” dinosaurs were born and raised in a computer. The original movie brought us a sequel in “Jurassic Park II” in 1997. The film, which carried over actor Jeff Goldblum from the original was subtitled The Lost World, and rightly so since it borrowed heavily from the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story. A much better film, “Jurassic Park III” came along in 2001 reuniting Sam Neil and Laura Dern from the original cast. That brings us to one of last summer’s biggest hits, “Jurassic World;” a movie about a sort-of-Disneyland filled with dinosaurs including new man-made breeds. Of course they get loose, putting the entire cast in peril. As hokey as this sounds, this is actually a pretty good movie and the effects are “right on!” All of the movies I have mentioned in this column, including the silent “Lost World” and the 1957 “The Land Unknown” are available on DVD so put on your “pith” helmet and get ready for some exciting dinosaur hunting.
Steven Spielberg managed to raise the dinosaur movie to a new heights with the release of “Jurassic Park” in 1993. Dinosaurs have been infesting our movie screens since nearly the beginning of the silent movie era with the animated short “Gerty the Dinosaur” films, but the real movie dinosaur, as we have come to know it, came about from the Warner Brothers-First National studios in 1925 with the filming of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World.” The huge beasts were the creation of stop-motion animator Willis O’Brien. O’Brien made models placed against a background and then moved minutely one frame at a time. When the film was sped up it all looked incredibly real. The movie about a Brontosaurus captured in the wild and brought to London where it ravages the city caught the imagination of everyone and was a huge hit. Eight years later, O’Brien would work on his biggest project, the original “King Kong,” one of the most cherished movies ever! In the early 1990s when Spielberg was considering making “Jurassic Park,” the story goes that he wanted to see a credible stop-motion dinosaur movie, so he watched the Universal Pictures 1957 hit, “The Land Unknown.” The movie featured stop-motion dinosaurs and a guy in a rubber Tyrannosaurus suit. The only problem was that when he attacked
Rice’s Find the perfect gift for Mom
Sarah Paretsky
Is it possible to have a hardboiled female detective? Traditionally, the answer would be no. The private eyes and the cops from the era of hardboiled pulp mysteries were all men (think Humphrey Bogart). Sarah Paretsky, in 1982, breathed new life into this genre with the introduction of her character V.I. Warshawski. Vic, as V.I. is known, is hardboiled in several ways. She’s tough, she’s gritty, and in true classic style, she falls in love with the bad guy. Also she drinks a lot, but for some reason she doesn’t smoke cigarettes--instead she’s something of a health nut. This book is one of Paretsky’s early novels and was written in and set in the 1980s: era of Ronald Reagan and land line phones. Indeed, it’s a fun book to read now, during this time of revival of all things ‘80s. Although a bestselling author, Paretsky has never quite become a huge “name brand”—perhaps because of her unabashed liberal politics. Any author who is not afraid to take a stance on hot political topics must be willing to alienate certain potential readers. It’s a risky move for a writer of genre fiction, but ultimately pays
off (whatever your politics may be) because it makes the character more realistic and more interesting. Vic comes across Scott as a real person Givens, with feelings and Browsers opinions rather than Bookstores, some drab hero. The book is and fellow centered around reviewer, the case of a daughter, woman who dies Amanda in childbirth along Givens with her child. Antiabortion activists and gang warfare, both topics of much interest in the 1980s, play key roles in this book. While getting more deeply entangled in the web of lies spun by the people around her, Vic slowly unravels a larger conspiracy. As a lover of old fashioned hardboiled crime, I do miss the selfdestructive behavior of so many of the heroes. Although Warshawski is more upbeat than I would like, the book stays true to its roots. Overall, this is a great read for anyone looking for a new mystery author (well, you might want to start with the first book in the series, Indemnity Only, whose title is perhaps a nod to the noir classic Double Indemnity). Paretsky has written seventeen books and if this early one is any indication, it’s a series a person could easily burn through.

A Risky Situation — Leaving our companion animals in our vehicle, with windows cracked, while we run inside to “grab some groceries, drop off a package at the post office or run inside for just a minute’. The temperature inside your car can RISE almost 30º F within 20 minutes. The longer you wait, the higher the temperature goes....... the more dangerous it becomes. Bryan Smith, owner Smith Glass
On the Cutting Edge Since 1945 Lynn Smith opened the doors at Smith Glass in the summer of 1945. Now in its 3rd generation of family ownership, customers throughout western Oregon trust Smith Glass with all of their residential and auto glass work. For many families, the home is their most important investment and provides a sanctuary from the storms of everyday life. Smith Glass helps homeowners create and maintain a warm and inviting place for families and their guests with modern, energy efficient wood or vinyl windows from the finest manufacturers. New replacement windows also add value to the home with their good looks while keeping heating & cooling costs at a minimum. Custom shower enclosures are a specialty at Smith Glass. They routinely install high quality all-glass shower enclosures along with custom mirrors. If you’re considering a bathroom remodel in the future, the photos on their website are an outstanding source for generating ideas. The possibilities are endless! Over the years, the windshield has become an integral part of a vehicle safety restraint system. It keeps the roof from crushing in on you in a rollover, it allows the airbags
to deploy in the correct position to cushion passengers, and prevents you and your family from being ejected in a serious collision. It’s important to your family’s safety that the automotive glass in your vehicle be installed properly. The certified installers at Smith Glass understand your windshield needs to be replaced correctly - and they offer a lifetime warranty against leaks. As a side note, Smith Glass has installed the glass in many local landmarks, including the Albany Library, Boulder Falls Inn in Lebanon, and Samaritan Cancer Center in Corvallis most recently. If you’re a construction professional or building owner, Smith Glass is the go-to place for commercial remodel or new construction. Stop in to see them today and welcome them to the Points for Profit family! The Smith family are your neighbors, so you can trust them to offer the highest quality materials expertly installed at a fair price. Is Your Clothes Dryer and Vent Safe? There are over 15,500 dryer fires every year in the U.S.! Many of these fires are preventable with proper installation and maintenance. As lint collects in the dryer vent system, the dryer can overheat, throw a spark, and cause a fire. Clogged dryer vents are considered to be the leading cause of dryer fires. Obstructed dryer vents cause dryers to take longer to dry clothing, which causes extra wear and increased energy consumption. Lint buildup can also lead to the perfect environment for unpleasant and harmful molds to thrive. Mold growth in homes can lead to structural damage as well as a variety of health problems. Warning Signs of a Clogged Dryer Vent • Clothes are taking more than 1 cycle to dry. • The dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle (over heating). • Clothes are hot, but still wet after a drying cycle. • Top of dryer is hot to the touch. • There is little or no air flow exiting from the outside vent. • Excessive lint collecting behind or around the dryer. • Excess Lint on Clothing. • Moldy Smell, Damp / musty smell in dryer or clothing. • Straw, grass, or other evidence of a bird nest at the outside vent cover. How to make your dryer safer and more efficient!! • Have plastic or foil vents replaced with rigid metal,

Motherhood for Going Mother’s Day How am I qualified to write about motherhood? I’m not! Except that thousands of mothers have spoken to me or written to me during my 20 years as the CEO of Focus on the Family (called Care for the Family) in the United Kingdom. My wife is a school teacher of 1st graders. She can tell you in a heartbeat the enormous influence a mother has on their child for both good and ill. A child who hears 40,000 “no”s before starting kindergarten will do ok, but a child who hears those same 40,000 “no”s but also hears 200,000 positive statements about themselves and what they do will thrive. Don’t ever underestimate the power of your words. My mother is a liar! Oh I don’t mean she is bad - she is just a liar - she believes I can do no wrong and that I can walk on water. I know in the depths of her mind she can still remember when I lost a 10 dollar note (or the equivalent in British money I should say) when I was 5. She can remember when I pulled Susan’s hair at a birthday party or I rang down the street ringing door bells and ran away before they came to the door. Oh, she can remember ok but she chooses not too! My mother chooses to only believe what is good about me and chooses to reinforce my sense of well-being on a daily basis; telling the world that I was perfect (which of course I wasn’t!). If there has been one thing above all others that has led to the little success I have had in life, it is the encouragement and belief of my mother. Of course she could have disciplined me a little more but I, now

60 years old, still remember and know in my heart that my mother believed in me more than anyone else I knew. It was literally life changing. Now she is 84, Irish, with a twinkle in her eye and not as spritely as I knew her, but I call her most days in England and we talk, and after I put the phone down, I feel good. My mother and God have always believed in me. In celebration of motherhood today, who do you believe in? What difference will it make in their lives? What joy will it bring to their hearts? Oh, and by the way, before I go - if you are the mother of a teenager, don’t panic - this too will pass away - you will get through it. Fight as few battles as you can, be as available as you can even late at night, and even in your most low moments when your teenager is driving you quietly round the bend, know that your words of encouragement thrown back in your face are making a difference no matter what. Let’s celebrate motherhood - you may have heard me say before, worry comes with the placenta and never seems to leave however old your children are. Be at peace - you are not alone and you have a high calling! Much love to every Mom who reads this little piece from an imperfect Dad!

Norovirus Returns! WARNING: This article contains detailed information about violent gastrointestinal events and may not be suitable for lunch-break viewers. What do food poisoning, stomach flu, and “cruise ship crud” all have in common? They may be caused by one of six strains of norovirus. Symptoms of noro-infection usually occur 12 to 48hrs after exposure and include: acute onset nausea and vomiting (acute onset = no warning), cramping, watery diarrhea, low fever, head and body aches. The symptoms usually pass within 24 to 72hrs and most recover without complications. The very old, young, and medically- delicate however, may be at a higher risk for dehydration resulting from the vomiting and diarrhea. Dehydration can be a very serious matter leading to hospitalization or even death. Norovirus spreads through populations very quickly. It is passed from hand or surface to mouth. The virus can be transferred before symptoms occur and up to 3 days after symptoms have resolved. Breathing the virus will not cause infection, you must ingest it. A typical outbreak might involve an infected food handler with poor hygiene contaminating meals to be served. Unaware that they carry the virus, the diners go home and perhaps share a sip from their glass with a family member. The next day, the family member goes to work or school and accidentally shares the virus with that community. By the time a person develops symptoms, they have spread the virus far
and wide. So how do we battle this sneaky bug? Since the virus travels hand/surface/food to mouth, the single best defense is routine proper hand and Pamela Becker, RpH surface cleaning. Hands must be lathered with Rice’s soap and water; hand Pharmacy sanitizers will not kill norovirus. Soapy & Gifts water with a bit of A “Pill Box bleach added is the Pharmacy” best surface cleanser. (Remember; sponges and dish clothes can be viral hideouts!) When caring for an infected individual, all soiled linens and clothing are teeming with active norovirus, so take care in handling these items. People infected with norovirus usually do not feel like eating, however it is important to encourage them to drink fluids to replace their losses. If possible, offer the person a beverage labeled as a “rehydration” product. Some examples are: Gatorade, PowerAde, and Pedialyte (ideal for young children). These products contain electrolytes, which are important to replace after a bout of vomiting or diarrhea. Once the viral symptoms have resided, reintroduce easily digested foods gradually, as the gut may still be a bit touchy! Over the counter probiotics may help shorten the duration of symptoms and reduce residual GI issues during recovery. Avoiding infection by norovirus can be tricky, but proper thorough hand and surface cleaning on a regular basis is your best defense. If you have questions, the staff at Rice’s Pharmacy is happy to take the time to help you find answers.

‘Tis the season for coughing, blowing, wheezin’, an’ sneezin’. Or is it? Thousands of children (and their parents) in our community seem to be affected by this allergy thing. For those of you who have not been, you are looked upon with envy at this time of year. Millions of hard earned dollars are spent on overthe-counter drugs, weekly shots, and physician visits. Then there is time off from school (or work) and the effect of little Miss Sneezy on the family. The toll from allergies is immense. Why is that? What is it that makes one child allergic and another not? After all, we all live on the same planet! The difference is most often seen in how one child’s body is able adapt, and another not. Very simply put, an allergy is the inability of your child’s body to handle something which is in their immediate environment: Pollen from trees, grasses, flowers, etc. (There are also allergies to drugs, harsh detergents, and other agents. These allergies are seen as a protective reaction and are not the type I am discussing today). In other words,

your child seems to be very sensitive to the pollen in the air. This is called being hypersensitive. Think about this for a moment. Something is making your Dr. Nicholas child’s body hypersensitive R. Brown, Timber linn to a perfectly Chiropractic normal part of the Clinic environment! So is the solution to get rid of all the flowers, trees, grasses, etc.? Or is it make more sense to make your child’s body function normally so it can handle its environment in a normal fashion? You may not realise that the thing that runs your child’s body in a perfect manner is the nervous system. As long as it is able to control all functions of the body with no interference, your child should have the best health possible. If however, there is interference to the normal function of the nervous system, your child’s body will not function properly and will react poorly to pollens, etc. Chiropractors call this interference a Vertebral Subluxation. It can be a serious health hazard! By correcting these vertebral subluxations, your child will have a better chance to successfully deal with allergies. If your child is suffering, call us. Xylitol, Gorilla Glue, and E-cigarettes By Dr. Eric Glaze, Albany Animal Hospital
We recently treated a dog that had gotten into his Mom’s purse and got several sticks of sugar free gum, so I thought I’d review some common toxins that can get dogs into trouble. The first is xylitol. Xylitol is most commonly found in sugar free gum and breath mints like Orbit and Trident. Dentists love it, and xylitol can be found in many dental products from toothpaste to mouthwash. It’s also present in many sugar free hard candies, and can be found in sweets marketed as being diabetic friendly. Xylitol is available for purchase in bulk to be used in baked goods in diabetic households. Other products that contain xylitol can include children’s vitamins and various cough syrups. Xylitol is very poisonous to dogs. The most common form of ingestion is the dog that gets into an owner’s purse and raids the pack of gum. Once ingested, the xylitol is confused for glucose by the pancreas which begins to produce insulin to try to transport the “glucose” (xylitol) into the body’s cells. The xylitol doesn’t go anywhere, it just stays in the blood and the pancreas makes more and more insulin. The result is an overdose of insulin with a dramatic drop in the dog’s actual blood sugar. They become hypoglycemic just hours after ingestion. If they ingest enough xylitol, the liver may also become severely damaged. One stick of gum or
breath mint is enough to make a 10 pound dog hypoglycemic. Five sticks of gum will cause liver damage in that same 10 pound dog. The next ingredient I want to mention is diphenylmethane diisocyanate. This is the active ingredient found in some glues. The most popular is Gorilla Glue, another product is Elmer’s Probond. These are perfectly safe products for people and effective as glues, but for some reason, dogs seem to like the taste. This is a serious problem because once the active ingredient reaches the warm acidic environment of the stomach, it expands to several times its original size and then rapidly hardens. This makes it very hard to remove from the stomach once it has formed and surgical removal is the only way to fix the dog once ingestion has occurred. If you have these products, please keep them in a secure location away from dogs. One more household product worth mentioning is the e-cigarette which is fast gaining popularity among young adults and teens. Each e-cigarette has a cartridge of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and various flavoring agents. Nicotine is very toxic to dogs and numerous cases of cartridge ingestion have been reported. One cartridge will make a fifty pound dog very sick and can easily kill a ten pound dog. These cartridges come in packs of five to one hundred cartridges. The flavoring agents that make them popular to young adults and teens also make them more appealing to dogs, the result can be deadly.

Stuff If The Walls Could Talk Making Decisions
Travel
When I was a little kid, there really weren’t that many decisions to make. I would have to decide whether to have cereal and milk or peanut butter and toast. Should I ride to the field and build a fort or play catch? I miss those uncomplicated days. Now that I am older, decisions come at me in a steady stream. I make small ones, big ones, in between ones, all day long. My poor head needs a rest at the end of the day. I find that making paper airplanes or counting the shingles on my neighbor’s roof, really helps to calm me. How does one get relief, so that when it’s time to kick off your shoes, you don’t feel like your brain has been in a blender? You could start by having

If and Sons Construction that doesn’t work, start singing Tom And Dooley and they Remodeling will eventually 541.926.9616 go away. This has worked for me. So when you find the decision monster is closing in, and all you have left at the end of the day are three functioning brain cells, multiple furrows littering your brow and an eye twitch that is approaching terminal speed; save yourself and proceed to the nearest exit! Now where did I put my paper airplane?

include prescription drugs, so you will want to add a Medicare Prescription Drug plan. Why? In the Medicare & You publication, it states, “you may owe a late enrollment penalty” if at any time after your Initial Enrollment Period is over. Medicare calculates the penalty if you have a gap of 63 days or longer before you enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan. That penalty is published every year in the Medicare & You publication or at the Medicare.gov web site (on or after December 1st). Let’s consider more options next month. Roll Back The Clock
Your teeth are the very first indicator of age, since lower front teeth tend to shift forward with each birthday and missing teeth create the appearance of hollowness in the cheeks. Look younger, more healthy and vibrant: start with your smile! Age expectancy is increasing, along with dental technologies; your smile can remain beautiful for years to come. You need strong gums to support your teeth. Periodontal disease, characterized by receding gums, wobbly teeth and deteriorating jaw bone, is the primary cause of tooth loss among older adults. Fortunately, gum disease is treatable at any age with a combination of advanced deep cleaning and antibiotics. In progressive cases, surgery may be required. Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease. The American Dental Association (ADA) found that bacteria in the mouth can create gum disease conditions in only 24 hours; regular, professional cleanings are essential. Clean, white teeth are the least expensive way to improve your looks with a “mini-facelift.” Along with daily brushing and flossing, you might consider a whitening treatment. Dental bleaches containing peroxide (available over the counter or through your dentist) will lighten your teeth a few shades, although the results are less dramatic in older teeth. Whitening toothpastes and rinses can temporarily lift superficial stains, but don’t expect the effect to last. Before deciding on a bleaching method, it’s a good idea to talk to your dentist. When visiting your dentist, remember to make note if you are taking any new medications. Also, let the team know if you have changed dosage or frequency in medications used longterm. It’s important because select common drugs can cause dry mouth, resulting in tooth decay or disease. Your beautiful smile is waiting!

Cellulite and Inch Loss
Going
Spring is here at last, and I am again being asked questions by those of you looking toward spring break and even summer. Some asking about how to best care for their skin or reduce cellulite. Lindie M. Let’s Truex, start with River’s Edge cellulite: Day Spa what is it 541-791-2800 and where do we begin to treat it? Many methods are available today from topical creams to surgical treatment. Cellulite refers to the dimpled or orange peel appearance on the thighs, buttocks, hips and other areas. Cellulite is more sensitive than normal skin and can feel cold to the touch. It may appear whiter than the rest of the skin. Hard cellulite, which is found in active women such as dancers or athletes, is the hardest to reduce because it attaches to the muscle. Soft cellulite on the other hand is more noticeable but easier to reduce. Cellulite develops when the skin sends down anchoring connective tissue to the muscle. In between this connective tissue and muscle are fat deposits. When the fat deposits become hard and large, they push against the connective tissue and stretch it, which therefore creates the outward appearance of lumps and bumps. This can be caused by a number of things: poor circulation, lack of exercise, poor lymphatic system drainage, food allergies, eating foods high in preservatives, yo-yo dieting, too much sun, lack of water, genetics, pregnancy, aging, smoking, tension and stress, and medication. Primarily women develop cellulite because their connective tissue is composed of x-shaped bands. These bands bind the skin to deeper tissues such as fascia or

muscle. The part that is attached to the skin traps the fat, and the fat ends up pushing on the skin creating the lump and bump effect. Most cellulite develops in girls around the age of 14 and increases through the years due to the thinning and redistribution of the subcutaneous skin. Men rarely develop cellulite because their connective tissue is perpendicular, which heads the collection of fat build up. Around 80% of western women believe they have cellulite. Even if a person has only 15% body fat, that person can have cellulite. Toxins and fat that have built up in the body are a large part of cellulite, and can affect women of any weight, size, or body structure. Sadly, liposuction does not permanently get rid of cellulite. Any cellulite program should include stimulation of the body’s elimination functions, increasing the body’s circulation and metabolism processes, support of the reduction of excess fluid retention; reestablish the elasticity of connective tissue. Cellulite is a permanent change in the body. There is no cure for cellulite, however there is a way to effectively fight it and ultimately reduce it. We have added new machines, equipment and techniques of body sculpting. In stimulating the body’s elimination functions, controlling excess fluid retention, controlling excess fluid retention by opening up the lymphatic system, and increasing circulation and metabolism. By getting the blood flowing, hard lumps and bumps can be broken down and this allows the body to re-establish the elasticity of connective tissue. The procedure is far superior to options available in the past and results are amazing and non invasive. Please call today if you would like to schedule a consultation to address any skin concerns you may be having. Mention High Points or P4P and we will start you off with $50 toward your program as a way to thank those of you supporting the non-profits in our area.

Critical Aspects of a Great Logo
Game
We’ve been busy working with a new client on developing their logo and that is what made it timely to write this month’s article! When it comes to logo design, you ultimately want it to convey your brand in the best possible manner. At the same time, you don’t want it to take up too much space. That is the greatest challenge – to be able to create a winning impact within the space constraints. Here are the seven factors you need to consider to have a logo that spells success! 1. Research always helps in effective logo design. Never make the mistake of rushing into creating a logo design. You need to do your research to understand the company, its objectives and mission, as well as its business goals – both short and long term. You also need to know the demographics of the target audience. 2. Attractive and unique: two elements of great logo design. You want your logo design to catch the attention of the customer. At the same time, it should not be screaming for attention. It should test the intellect of the customer; make him or her think a few minutes after seeing the logo. If you notice some of the top logo designs each of them have a unique aspect to it that depicts something about the company. 3. Simple and memorable logo design. One of things you need to focus on is to make sure your logo design is not too cluttered or too fancy. This will just confuse the customer. You want the customer to remember your brand. That will only happen if the logo is easy to remember. Also, be sure that the logo sends out positive signals to the customer.

4. Flexibility is a major issue in logo design. There are many companies who invest a fortune on their logo design only to realize later that their logo doesn’t work on a product wrapper! What a waste of time and Lauralee money! Your logo needs to Beck be flexible enough to work President and create a lasting impact on any medium whether it InSpirit is a product wrapper, your Marketing company website, or even Inc. any promotional materials you send out! That means you need to consider the size of the logo and the usage of appropriate colors. The colors used need to match well with any background while also helping the brand to stand out. 5. Never clutter your logo in logo design. One critical mistake people make is to cram in too much information in their logo design. This makes your logo look cluttered, not to mention the fact that customers will fail to remember your brand! 6. Use fonts that promote readability in your logo design. You might select a font that looks great on paper but, when you use it in the logo, it hampers readability. There is absolutely no point using classy fonts in logo design if they are going to prevent customers from remembering you. Make sure fonts are easy on the eye. 7. Usage of color in logo design. Great logo design will always focus on using complementary colors that look good against a black or white background.
