Steam powered traction engines are only part of the Steam Up fun.
by Karen Rogers The lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer are finally upon us! It’s time to get out and enjoy the warmth, bright light and long steamy days! Actually, a very good place to get all steamed up is Antique Powerland in Brooks, Oregon. This is an historical gem where the vintage machinery that powered our past is really up and running. I come from a long line of Steam Fiends and have attended steam fairs on both coasts since infancy, so I do have some experience! My Dad, Joe Brocard, has a steam operators certificate and is a volunteer there. The Great Oregon Steam-Up is the largest event of their year and occupies two weekends, one in July, the 30th and 31st, and August, 6th and 7th at the Antique Powerland grounds just West of the Brooks exit on I-5. The gates open at 8:00 A.M., and admission is $12 for adults and children under twelve are free. Among the featured activities are train and trolley rides, parades of antique machinery, sawmilling exhibitions and logging gear, tractor pulls and blacksmithing demos. In addition, the Brooks Depot Museum and Country Store are open, there is a swap meet AND a flea market! Phew!! That’s a lot to see! You can also eat some great food and listen to live Country music. Church services are held Sunday mornings at 8 A.M. on July 31 and August 7. Free parking and camping are also available. For more information, call 503- 393- 2424 or go to www.antiquepowerland.com. So, plan to step back in time for a day and enjoy these amazing mechanical marvels, the Old-Timers did things correctly, beauty and function combined. Dad and I will see you there!

Perfect Onion Rings

By Karen Rogers
Everybody who has eaten onion rings has confronted an awful possibility- when you bite into the ring, you are left with a handful of crust and a large, limp, dangling piece of onion. Or the batter collapses. Battered onion ring must have a place in the Universe, but I’m sure it’s reserved for punishment- REAL onion rings are breaded. First, select your onion. Good quality sweet onions are now available year ‘round. Get ones about three inches in diameter, larger ones take up too much room in the fryer. Prepare your flour mix- in a large plastic produce bad combine 1/3 -1/2 C flour with salt and lots of pepper. Blow up the bag, fasten and shake well. For the outer layer of breading, finely grind saltine crackers into tiny crumbs. You will need about 3 C, ground. Do not use breadcrumbs- they brown too fast and soak up grease. For 1 onion you will need 1 egg beaten well in a shallow pie pan. Now, slice your onion into ½ inch slices, and push into rings. Save the end pieces and any thin rings for tartar sauce. Now, the inside of each ring has a thin tough membrane; remove this

with a sharp knife and discard. To properly bread anything, you will need one dry hand and one wet one, or you will wind up bedaubed to the hairline! Put the onions into the flour bag and shake well. Set to your left. Place the crackers into a pie pan and place to your right. Put the egg bath dead center. Shake the onions to remove excess flour with your left (dry) hand and drop into the egg bath. With your right hand (wet) turn until completely covered. With the same hand, lift and drain some of the egg and then drop into the cracker crumbs. With your dry hand, turn them until they are covered all over. Lift and set on a baking sheet to dry. This technique works wonderfully with mushrooms!

Let’s Go! Will you be taking a vacation this summer? Whether traveling to a foreign or domestic destination; the trip will be more enjoyable if you plan ahead for your medication needs. Contact your pharmacy 7-10 days in advance of your departure. The pharmacy will need to know your travel dates. It is a good idea to factor in a few days beyond your expected travel period, in the event you experience a delay in returning. (This is particularly true if you are leaving the country.) By beginning the process early, you allow time for the pharmacy to get refill updates from your physician, order the quantity of medication you need, and bill your insurance company for extra drug quantities to cover your absence from home. Most insurance companies allow what is known as a vacation override. The override permits a pharmacy to bill for an additional refill within the same month, if you will be away from home when that refill would normally come due. If your insurance company will not grant a vacation override, you still have options: You can transfer your prescription from your home pharmacy to a pharmacy in the town you are visiting, when it is time for a refill. This is a simple process, which you can facilitate by making sure
all of your prescriptions are up to date and have refills available. Simply take your labeled prescription container to a pharmacy near where you are staying and Pamela ask them to transfer Becker, RpH the prescription. Most prescriptions are Rice’s transferrable between Pharmacy all states in the US. & Gifts You may not transfer A “Pill Box a prescription to a Pharmacy” foreign country. If traveling outside the US, be sure you take an ample supply of all needed drugs with you. You can leave instructions for a friend or family member to pick up your refills on a specific date and mail them to your vacation location. It is wise to let your home pharmacy know you are planning to do this, as they may be unwilling to release your medications to someone other than yourself without notice. The third option is to pay cash for the additional medication supply you may need while traveling. This is everyone’s least favorite option, but it keeps your trip from being derailed by an emergency room visit! Going on vacation? The staff at Rice’s Pharmacy can help you have a pleasant trip; stop by soon!

monthly premium and expecting your insurance to pay for the care when you need it. We are hearing more and more stories of people with $3000-$8000 Amanda deductibles who Brown MD end up in the Avoda urgent care for a cold and are Health paying $300-$700 Clinic out of pocket for their care. Or patients going to their doctor and finding out 2-3 months later that the insurance did not cover the $200+ visit fee or the $300+ worth of lab tests they ordered. Avoda Health offers a practical solution that makes your medical expenses predictable. Avoda’s prices are transparent and available on their website. They can tell you the price of services before you use them so you can make an informed decision on your care. So you pay less for your everyday care and you can keep your insurance for the more expensive things, like an unexpected visit to the emergency room or that much needed surgery.
How about seeing your doctor for $65 period? Now what if you could see your doctor the same/next day when sick? What if your visit price included your most common labs? The impossible became reality here in Albany when Avoda Health opened last October. Avoda Health does not accept insurance of ANY kind. Instead, Avoda Health saves on having a billing department and passes the savings directly on to the patient as lower prices. Avoda Health offers $65 office visits for non-member patients. Patients can become members for just $49 a month for an adult and then just $20 a visit. The top 17 lab tests are included for members as well as most in-office procedures. Rates for children are available. Anyone paying cash for their health care immediately gets excited about a lower price. But why would you choose Avoda Health when you are already paying for insurance? Gone are the days of paying a

We, as parents, have been carefully taught to be fearful whenever a child exhibits the manifestations of being sick. So have our children. By the time your teenager reaches the age of 20. he or she has watched approximately 18,000 hours of drug commercials! Disturbing isn’t it? Because the fact is that there’s little profit in health but vast amounts in medical health “care”. The pharmaceutical industries are very concerned about the use of “nontraditional”·approaches to the restoration and preservation of health. The motivation? Profit and loss of market share. Enter a new line of “lifestyle” enhancing drugs. They’re marketed to the public as “health”, indispensable and even fun (I won’t talk about the side-effects). Let’s look at Turns for a moment. In order to increase sales. Tums is marketed as good for you- because it now contains calcium. Have you ever heard of taking a drug in order to get your dietary load of a necessary mineral? My guess is that the makers of Tums simply “forgot” to mention that calcium is more readily available from the foods we eat. They also forgot to mention that Tums, as an antacid, removes acid from the stomach which is needed for calcium to be absorbed by the digestive tract! This is an example of brilliant marketing and ordinary people have bought into it as healthcare. A frightening thought! But wait, there’s more. Have you seen the ads for Prozac? They suggest that in order to escape the drudgery of dealing with your children, the laundry, grocery shopping, and the myriad of daily chores of everyday life, you should develop a regular, weekly Prozac habit to help you cope. Isn’t it a wonderful service the drug company is providing for the naive public?

We’ve been carefully led to believe that it’s wise and beneficial to “treat” all your child’s symptoms. There seems to be no weight given to the fact that the symptoms are there for a reason. Dr. Nicholas There is a cause. What is called “sickness’’ R. Brown, may simply be an Timber linn expression of health Chiropractic -a sign that your Clinic child’s body may be doing exactly what it’s programmed to do whenever it’s invaded by some germ. The nervous system, that amazing master controller of your body, goes into high gear in order to restore law and order. That’s the plan. Certain body functions are rerouted, changed, altered, enhanced, sometimes exaggerated, but all are under the perfect guidance of the supercomputer that runs you. I’m not saying that you have to like it when your body’s “doing its thing “·but ultimately it’s for your health and benefit. What concerns me most is that there’s no thought given to the idea that the body has an inborn potential for health. The point I want to make is that your child’s symptoms are a sign that his body is actually fighting with something. As long as the battle is not being lost, don’t interfere. Allow your child’s body to learn how to deal with a health crisis on its own. There are instances though, where your child’s body may need a bit of help if it is not coping with a health challenge well. Many patients ask me about a child having diarrhea, for example, and panic because there have been all sorts of talk of dehydration. Diarrhea occurs when the body is attempting to eliminate something in a hurry. For most cases though, it’s usually self-limiting. If your child presents any of the following symptoms or the fever and diarrhea persist for more than two days and shows no sign of slowing down see you health-care provider: your child is

They MUST rest for about twenty minutes before frying. The coating dries and the crumbs absorb the eggs, making the crust fairly grease proof. In the interim, make tartar sauce- chop the reserved onion and a small dill pickle, combine with salt, pepper and mayonnaise to taste. Fry the rings at 340 degrees, turning twice, until nicely browned, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain on brown paper bags. You can add chili powder, garlic powder or other dry flavorings to the flour mix or a tbsp of soy sauce or Tabasco to the egg bath to vary the flavor. After frying, eat as hot as possible with lots of tartar sauce, both immediately and immoderately! Costs Less continued from page 4

Wake the World Comes to Local Lakes Wake the World (WTW) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are a group of boat owners providing watersports opportunities to abandoned, abused, and neglected children, as well as for the handicapped and our wounded warriors. WTW began in 2008 with 8 families providing a day on the lake for some residents of a local children’s home. In 2013, WTW became the largest all volunteer organization of its kind, with over 300 volunteered boats worldwide! We strive to make these events as easy as possible to host, and have a network of boat volunteers and sponsors to help support
each event. We are excited to announce that the foster children of Linn County will be able to participate in a Wake the World event in 2016! Wake the World Santiam will hold its first annual event at Detroit Lake on August 8, 2016. We expect to serve approximately 25-30 families and couldn’t do that without the support of our volunteers and sponsors. If you would like to be a volunteer or your company would like to sponsor the event, please email us at wtwsantiam@gmail.com. Wake the World Santiam will be held at Mongold State Park in Detroit, Oregon.

causing friction among moving parts and throw off timekeeping accuracy. Always wind your watch in a clockwise direction. Remove the watch from your wrist so as not to place undue pressure on the stem. Don’t wear your metal watch like a loose bracelet; it will scratch the crystal and band. Wear it snugly. Replace the battery in a quartz watch before it runs out. Dead batteries left in a watch can leak or corrode, ruining the timepiece. No matter how handy you are, don’t attempt any “do-ityourself” watch repairs. Let an expert do the repairs.

If you would have told me years ago that coloring for adults would become a massive movement, I simply would have laughed. Most parents can’t justify spending more than a couple dollars for a children’s coloring book. An adult coloring book ranges in cost from $7.99 to $12.99. This new found passion has permeated into journaling Bibles, coloring gift items, and much more. The industry has once again found a small niche. The combination of journaling, the Bible, and coloring has become a strong desire among many scrap-

bookers, creative artists, and those that like to doodle during a sermon. Currently we have many options for the enthusiast. Our best-seller is the NLT Inspire. It has Keven room for journaling Ferguson, with a number of Willamette pages to color. Valley Much of what Christian is colored in the Inspire are verses Supply that are placed to the right and left of the pages. One guest in the store indicated this is a great way to memorize Scripture. As I reflect upon this craze in our society, I really believe this trend allows others to express their love for God through art. God’s Word transforms our lives. Journaling what you have learned and coloring key Scriptures can powerfully cement Biblical truths in our hearts. If you are looking for a new way to interact with God’s Word, come on down to the store and pick up a coloring book, the Inspire, or one of our many journaling Bibles.

The Property Search Begins
If The Walls Could Talk What Time is it, Anyway?
Travel
For most of us, time has become our slave master. I remember back when I was a kid, I rarely looked at the clock unless I was in school. Then, I was wishing it would go faster. Now a day, I start the day with bleary eyes straining to focus on the bedside clock, desperately hoping that I have just a few more minutes before I have to rise and face the day. No such luck...tick-tock…ticktock! I begin my morning cleansing knowing that every second wasted will be less time for me to read the paper and gobble my cereal. I glace at the clock and see that I am three minutes ahead of schedule. But wait! The socks I am wearing don’t match. Tick-tock...

With all of the online home search sites available, it is very easy for buyers to start shopping from the comforts of their own home. This is a great way to start the search process, but please keep in mind photos online can be deceiving. We hear this time and time again when entering a property “Wow this looks nothing like the pictures,” and “I had no idea that this home was located on such a busy street.” However online is a great place to start! At this point your agent should have sent you some properties that they would recommend you viewing based on your property needs. It is a good idea to drive by these properties before viewing. Some of these homes may be located on a busy street or possibly in a less than desirable area.

Eliminating these properties right out the door will allow you more time to search more appealing properties in this competitive market. Time is of the essence in the JASON market we are NUNN, dealing with. We Cadwell see many listings Realty receiving multiple Group offers in only a few days on the market. In these situations buyers aren’t given much time to deliberate on a property before offers start coming in. Knowing what you are looking for and where you would like to live, will allow you to narrow your search to these properties only. This will eliminate wasting valuable time viewing these properties that don’t fit what you are looking for. Look for the installment next month about handling multiple offer situations.

Earth Mid-Year Review for Your Business As June ends businesses are busy preparing to close second quarter of 2015. This is an excellent time of year to perform a financial check-up, particularly since you already should have filed your tax returns. Here are some things you should consider. Review Your Taxes: There is a wealth of information on your tax return that can help you review your financial situation. A review of income and expenses included on your tax return could shed light on areas that indicate you need to make course corrections to assure your business ends up in a healthier tax position by years end. And a close review should reveal any obstacles that may prevent you from reaching your own business goals. Taxes aren’t just about reporting income and claiming deductions and credits. They also involve considerable planning during the year. As a business hopefully you are using a CPA not only to file your taxes but as an advisor to your business. Medicare Advantage Plans
Information
Medicare Prescription Drug plans will have the three stages of coverage; the Initial Coverage Stage, the Coverage Gap (aka Donut Hole), and the Catastrophic Stage. At the Initial Coverage Stage an individual will pay a shared cost of the drug. At the Coverage Gap, sometimes called the Donut Hole, you will pay more of the cost of the drug. And at the Catastrophic Stage the plan will pay more for the cost of the drug. At the Catastrophic Stage you could pay $7.40 for a brand name drug. Some drug plans will offer Preferred Mail Order benefits where the cost of drugs will have savings if you use the “preferred” pharmacy. And some of the savings will be $0 for 90 days Tier 1 and Tier 2 drugs. The Preferred Mail Order service is easy to set up and can be a simple phone call. Medicare Advantage plans are Part C of Medicare. The plans combine Medicare Part A (hospital) and Medicare Part B (Medical/doctors care) coverage and now the private insurance company is managing Medicare Part

Allergy Season is Here!! Allergy season is certainly here with our crazy Oregon weather! An allergy is an overaggressive immune response triggered by ingesting certain foods, touching certain substances, or inhaling an irritant such as pollen or animal dander. Allergies to pollen, spores, mold, and dust (also called hay fever or allergic rhinitis) affect the respiratory system and are usually the most difficult to control. Symptoms of hay fever are sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, watery eyes, itchy eyes and nose, and headache. Hay fever is often seasonal (when pollen is in the air), but if constantly exposed to an offending substance (e.g., pet dander), symptoms can last year-round. Allergies are often associated with weak adrenal, immune, and digestive functions. Natural treatments are used to support and improve those functions and to alleviate hay fever symptoms. Many people wonder what really works. What can I use naturally? At Health & Herbs we
go over 1. Supplements, 2. Herbal Medicine, and 3. Nutrition. Herbal medicines rarely have significant side effects when used appropriately and at suggested doses. Occasionally, Brittney an herb at the Haywood, Owner Health prescribed dose and Herbs causes stomach upset or headache. This may reflect the purity of the preparation or added ingredients, such as synthetic binders or fillers. For this reason, it is recommended that only highquality products be used. Good health can help ease allergy symptoms, and good health starts with nutrition. Eat a moderately low-fat, high-complexcarbohydrate diet. Drink 1/2 of body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., a 150 lb. person would drink 75 oz. of water). For seasonal allergies, beginning natural treatments 1–2 months before the season starts can help reduce the severity of symptoms. For free consultations and to receive a list of supplements, vitamins, and/or natural remedies you can use for your allergies come visit Health & Herbs.

The 4th of July
By Dr. Eric Glaze, Albany Animal Hospital
Finds
As we move full swing into summer we are approaching a part of the season that many dog owners dread. The Fourth of July. There are a lot of people who have dogs that are afraid of loud noises who know exactly what I am talking about. This is the time when our office starts getting the calls requesting tranquilizers for phobic dogs. There are some circumstances where a dog’s irrational fear very well may lead to serious injury or property damage. One of our patients once broke through a sliding glass door, suffering serious lacerations, then ran out into the street and got hit by a car. When the stakes are that high we prescribe heavy medication, but in less extreme circumstances there may be some other options to consider. One thing to realize is that just being nervous is not life-threatening, and a dog doesn’t stand much of a chance of learning to cope with the fear if given mind altering drugs. Dogs with phobias of the vacuum cleaner or other noise making appliances can often lose their fear through a process of desensitization by which they are exposed to ever increasing doses of the scary thing until they learn it is not a problem. There are actually CD’s that can be purchased that allow owners to play fireworks or thunderstorm sounds while slowly increasing the volume. Desensitization
is a gradual process which takes time and patience. This process is a little harder to control when the neighbors decide to randomly unleash their illegal arsenal in the weeks leading up to the 4th of July. We can help guide our dogs by ignoring their fearful behavior by either going about our business as usual, or engaging them in active play, thus demonstrating by our own actions that there is nothing for them to worry about. Punishing anxious behavior will only make the situation worse. Even less helpful is our natural tendency to comfort our distressed pets with affection. Petting them at the wrong time will only reinforce their anxious state. There are a variety of non-drug options that can also be used to help calm anxious dogs. Dog Appeasing Pheromone or DAP is a synthetic version of a pheromone produced by a lactating dog that help her puppies feel relaxed and bonded to their siblings and mother. DAP infused collars, sprays, and room diffusers may help give environmental cues that let a dog know that the situation is alright. Proquiet is a supplement with the active ingredient tryptophan, the amino acid found in turkey that makes us all sleepy during Thanksgiving. There is also a new prescription diet made by Royal Canin called CALM that has natural ingredients like tryptophan and specific milk proteins that can bring down the tension in anxiety prone pets.

The Invoice Jonas Karlsson
Imagine a system that is able to determine exactly how happy you are with life: various experts look at your experiences and how you’ve reacted to them, and can come up with a precise “Experienced Happiness” quotient. Now imagine that the world has decided to attempt to equalize everyone’s contentment by taxing those with the highest EH. What happens when one of the happiest people in the world, who works part-time in a video store, receives an invoice for millions? The Invoice is humorous and charming, with a romantic aspect as our hero falls in love. However, there are some darker undercurrents that prevent this book from being the feel-good book that it seems to be on the surface. Think back to George Orwell’s 1984 or Franz Kafka’s The Trial. Each of these deal with a bureaucracy that has ultimate reach and power. The difference is that there is never any indication in The Invoice that this could be wrong. We are in the age of smartphones and Google; we willingly give up our privacy to forprofit companies, so why shouldn’t the government have access to our lives, too? This is a world in spirituality has been replaced by a practical combination of
science and money. In addition to this disturbing worldview is our happy hero. He works in a video store, but more than that, he Scott is an avid movie fan Givens, and in one sense, the Browsers Bookstores, ultimate audience member. He is and fellow socially isolated, reviewer, intellectually daughter, incurious, and Amanda spiritually unmoved. Givens He has no drive, no imagination, no real depth in any aspect of his life. He is mentally passive, and is ready to be entertained. He views the world in juxtaposition with scenes from movies. Although he yearns for a relationship, we do not sense love, only a desire for what is immediately in front of him. And the climax of the book is a reenactment of a scene from one of his favorite movies. I’m not convinced that many readers will find the hero to be a good role model. Although not as frightening as the common dystopian view of the world in which there is a dictator spewing fear and hate, there is something deeply disturbing about a novel in which the “good guy” just sits around and waits for something to happen—even if he does have a good attitude about it. Bottom line: actually quite an entertaining book, but there’s more to think about than the usual summer read. Release date: July 12, 2016.

Facility. With a Medicare Advantage plan the stay in hospital is only 1 day. Medicare Advantage plans will provide “more” benefits. Usually they will offer either vision, dental, hearing and/or fitness membership. It depends on the private insurance carrier as to what additional benefits are offered. There are plans that offer all of the benefits I listed above. If you want more there are “riders” that will add a supplemental benefit to the plans. Most individuals like the $0 per month premium plans and especially if you are like most boomers – turning 65 in 2016 or 2017 you are relatively healthy, $0 is a great premium to pay.
