Karen Rogers serves up some award winning goodies at Points for Profit.

by Karen Rogers Spencer Costello of Premier Floor Covering and Melinda Butler of Elmer’s Restaurant make a business to business connection in the Points for Profit program.

Business Connections by Rick Rogers As a writer and editor of High Points from the very first issue 7 ½ years ago I can’t tell you how proud I am of our Points for Profit family. For those unfamiliar with Points for Profit, the goal is to bring quality local businesses together with select local non-profit organizations and their supporters for the mutual benefit of both. The program keeps millions of dollar spent with local businesses each year while the tracking of sales receipts from those businesses translate to extra cash for the non-profits. The member businesses go out of their way to attract and help the local organizations and even try to do business with each other in the Points for Profit family. A perfect example happened in December when business member Elmer’s Restaurant in Albany needed to completely re-carpet their restaurant. They went directly to another Points for Profit business, Premier Floor Covering of Lebanon. These two businesses are perfect examples of how the program works. Elmer’s Restaurant in Albany has gone out of their way to help local participating non-profits such

as Vets Helping Vets HQ and others raise funds, while Premier has also been at the forefront of helping the non-profits with their flooring needs. Personally, Karen and I needed several things done around our house and went to different Points for Profit businesses for all of them. We had a pantry floor replaced by Pyburn and Sons remodeling, plumbing issues addressed by Evenflo Plumbing and some important electrical work done by one of our newest businesses in the program, City and Suburban Electric. Not only was all of the work top quality, we earned points for the receipts that we can pass on to our favorite non-profits. These are just a few examples of how the Points for Profit program works. If you would like to learn more as a business, or if you are a non-profit supporter who would like to nominate a businesses to be in the program, check us out at: pointsforprofit.org. You can also call us at: 541791-2901 and leave a message. We will be happy to get back to you. From all of us at Points for Profit and High Points have a wonderful and successful New Year!

Elmer’s Restaurant in Albany is a long-time business partner in the Points for Profit program.

After years of thinking about it and constant encouragement from a number of people, my cookbook, “Karen’s Famous Recipes” hit the local bookstore shelves in early December. The book contains recipes published over more than the past seven years in “High Points” as well as a number of my recipes that have won fair awards including two prestigious Bob’s Red Mill awards. When you read the dedication in the book you will notice that it is dedicated to my Dad, Joe Brocard, and to my daughter Catherine, a high-end graphic artist in Portland who laid out the entire book for me. It is because of them the book was written. Prior to the passing of my mother a few years back, I don’t think Dad ever turned on the stove or boiled tea water. Also, despite growing up in a household of homemade food, my daughter never really mastered the art of cooking before leaving home to live in the “big city” of Portland. Both were constantly on the phone to me asking how to prepare this or that including food they had eaten for years. After years of asking, “When is that book going to be finished?” Here it is. One of my favorite stories concerns a phone call from my daughter in Portland asking how to make mashed potatoes. I asked her how many tons of mashed potatoes she had eaten at our dinner table over the years. I told her to boil up the potatoes, mash them, add milk and butter, then salt and pepper to taste. About a week later I get another call telling me that it is a lot easier if you cut the potatoes up before you boil them. You won’t find mashed potatoes in my cookbook but you will find that I have written the recipes for people who know nothing about cooking and are starting from scratch. Also, I want to caution people to never substitute items that are not in my recipes. The results can be disastrous. My book proves that cooking can be easy and fun and the results will be mouthwatering. Please enjoy the book and remember, always cut up the potatoes before you boil and mash them! This is a healthy recipe that actually tastes good! Usually, I avoid “healthy”, “natural”, and “Good for You” foods like the plague. They’re sampled in big box stores and generally taste like cardboard. That’s if you’re lucky. I had to go home and brush my teeth after one of those. “Good” food does not have to taste awful. For two years running, I was the Bob’s Red Mill championship award winner. This recipe was developed to win the third year but, alas, the contest was discontinued. Ta Da!!! My oatmeal bread makes its debut right here! The night before baking, pour 1 C boiling water over 1/3 C extra-thick oats. Cover and set aside. Bring 1/3 C Bob’s Steel Cut Oats in 1 C water just to a boil. Remove from heat, cover and set aside. In the morning, cook the S.C. Oats until they are thick. Meanwhile, drain the thick oats into a measuring cup. Add warm water to the cup to make 1 C liquid and pour into mixing bowl. Add ¼ C honey and stir well and add 2 tsps. Of yeast and let proof until bubbly. To the oats in the pan, add ¼ C butter, 1 ½ tsp salt, the soaked oats, 1/3 C quick oats, 1 egg and 1 egg yolk, reserving the white for glaze. Stir well, cool a little, and pour into the yeast in the bowl and mix well. While this is mixing, sift together 1C whole- wheat flour and 1C gluten flour. Add to the oatmeal mix and blend well. Add 3-4 C flour to make a

Turn out and shape into two loaves and place on a parchment paper lined pan. Add 1 tbsp. water to the reserved egg white, beat well and brush over the loaves. Slash the loaves with a sharp knife and mist frequently while rising. Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Place a second baking sheet under the bread, to prevent burning, and bake, misting every five minutes for the first 15 minutes, then bake an additional 15 to 20 minutes until done at 200 degrees on an instant read thermometer. Remove, with the paper to a rack to cool, after 30 minutes, remove the paper. Try not to cut it for another half hour at least!! See!! Good -for -you food can taste GOOD!

Stuff If The Walls Could Talk Happy New Years

Travel

With a New Year upon us the cabinets in your home could be in need of a face lift. “Re-facing” is one option that is often used typically involving the gluing of wood veneer on the surface of cabinet frames, and replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts. If you are considering refacing old cabinets, choose wisely, because costs can add up quickly. However, once you start down this path, other options start cropping up like mushrooms on a rainy day. Options include changing out those old style door hinges to European hidden hinges and installing new drawer guides to make the drawers operate smoother. That means you would have to rebuild the drawer boxes to accommodate the new drawer guides ending up in a narrower drawer and some possibly unhappy silverware. You also need to consider changes to the fixed shelves. Murphy’s Law says

All kinds of options are available without having to settle with an existing layout. You should consider all of those options before getting started. To sum up, refacing is s way to get a cleaner look for your cabinets. But use caution. It can be like putting a new throw on an old couch. It still creaks when you sit down and still shows where you sit every night. All of us at Pyburn and Sons want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous 2016.

Winter presents some unique challenges if you are trying to sell your home at this time of year. During a season when there is likely to be rain and snow there are steps you can take to brighten your home and make showing it more pleasant and enjoyable for your potential buyers. Here are some additional tips. Ease up on the scents. Some people are allergic to certain scents and deodorizers, so don’t spray the air or plug-in air fresheners. Don’t burn candles or spray perfume in the bedroom for the same reason. If you are going to bake cookies or simmer spices such as cinnamon in water on the stove, put out munchies so buyers are not disappointed. Make it visually pleasing. Display photographs showcasing your summer flower gardens and lush green lawns. Keep blinds partially closed that otherwise show undesirable outdoor scenery such as a dilapidated fence or a nearby structure that obstructs views.

A good time and special bargains are always a benefit at the annual Points for Profit silent auction.

Get Ready For the Auction By Karen Rogers Polish up your bidding paddle! Set your price limits! Don’t sneeze or scratch your head!!! Oh, wait! This is not the usual rabid frenzy type auction, it’s our own polite, civilized Points for Profit auction held at our annual Awards Banquet at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center on March 1st. Here you can leisurely stroll along the hall of tables piled high with donated merchandise, travel trips and dinner vouchers. You are allowed to peruse the goodies and offer a bid. Then you can change course and go to the dessert auction. Things are a bit different here- you can bid on a dessert as an individual or gather friends and bid as a group. Sharing is much more stringently enforced in

groups, however. This year we will have a LIVE dessert auction so come ready to bid high! Our for-profit businesses generously donate items and services that are immensely desirable and useful. Some of the non-profits also provide donations. As a lifelong birder, I am always watching for bird feeders and have had success in bidding. I have to say that this part of the auction is for the birds- they love it! When the time limit is approaching, you can always swoop in with another bid! Remember, every penny raised in both auctions goes directly to local non-profit organizations, so come to our fun event and enrich yourself and our charities in an evening full of fun, good food and good company. See you there!

Job Welcome 2016! Best wishes for a Happy New Year; it’s destined to be a historic one! On January 1, 2016, Oregon joins California as the second state to pass legislation which is intended to greatly expand women’s’ access to effective birth control. House Bill 2879 spearheaded by Dr. Knute Buehler (R-Bend); gives pharmacists the authority to prescribe oral birth control pills and transdermal birth control patches for women who request them. In the opinion of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, these forms of birth control can safely be removed from prescription status. The Oregon Legislature felt there ought to be some professional guidance for women choosing to use these agents, so pharmacists were asked to fill this role. While HB 2879 goes into effect in January, it will likely be mid-year before this service is actually available. Pharmacists will need time to complete specialized training which will certify them to counsel women on their contraceptive options. A second piece of legislation, House Bill 3343, requires insurance companies to pay for birth control whether it is prescribed by a traditional practitioner or a pharmacist.

The patient will be asked to fill out a standardized form that will include their personal health history and some family health history. This information will be used by the pharmacist to select an appropriate agent. Women who are already established on a particular product may elect to continue that therapy. In rare instances, the pharmacist may advise against the use of hormonal birth control, if it would pose a risk to the patient’s health. Pharmacists will be limited to prescribing oral birth control pills and transdermal birth control patches. Women seeking other forms of contraception will still need to be seen by a traditional practitioner. Rice’s Pharmacy welcomes your questions, stop by soon!

Planting Bare Root Roses

You can buy bare roots (dormant plants sold and shipped without soil around their roots- Available at Wilco in February), and plant them in late winter in warm climates or early spring in cold climates. If you buy potted plants that have already commenced growing, plant them as you would any garden plant, anytime from spring through early fall. If bare roots arrive before you prepare the planting hole or the ground thaws, it’s important to protect them until you can get them in the ground. As long as the roots stay moist, they’ll be fine for a day or two. Open any plastic wrapping around bare roots, and refresh roots in a bucket of water if you will plant them within 12 hours. Otherwise, sprinkle roots with water and leave them wrapped in plastic for a day or two. If you’re looking at a longer period before you plant, it’s best to heel them in a bare spot or ground. Stand bare roots up in a bucket, or lay them at a 45-degree angle in a shallow, shaded trench. If the ground is still frozen, plant the roots in a large pot. Either way, cover the roots and top third of the plant with soil, compost, or peat moss. Water as often as necessary to keep the roots moist. Then plant as early as possible to avoid damaging new roots and top growth. Give your roses the right environment for growth. Select a location where they’ll receive at least six hours of sun. The site should be permanent, away from competing trees and shrubs. Don’t expect a plant to live

in the same spot where another rose died. Before planting bare-root roses, soak roots in a bucket of water for at least two hours (no longer than 12 hours). Prune roots that are broken, Word injured, or too long. From Dig a hole 12-18 WILCO inches deep and 2 feet wide, keeping the backfill close. Brian Add two shovelfuls of Coons, composted manure or Wilco compost to the hole, then mix it into the bottom soil. Set the plant in the hole and spread the roots evenly around it. Position the plant so that the bud union (a swelling at the base of a grafted plant where the new plant was grown on the rootstock) is 1 inch above the soil surface in warm climates or 1 inch below the surface in cold climates. Use your shovel handle as a guide. Own-root roses differ from grafted or budded stock. Grown from cuttings, they develop their own root systems and don’t have a knobby bud union. Simply plant them about 1 inch deeper than they were planted in their pot. Backfill the planting hole two-thirds full, add water, then allow it to drain. This helps settle the soil. Fill the hole with more soil; water again. Prune new roses back by one-third to concentrate the plant’s energy in growing roots; remove any dead or broken wood to foster strong canes. When planting containergrown roses, keep pruning to a minimum at planting time. Wait several weeks until leaves develop and canes resume growing; then feed.

New Year’s Resolutions

We all promise ourselves to somehow be better each year. Sometimes, it’s little things, and sometimes life-changing decisions. Either way, the list of books below are general classics of motivation. These are the books which are most consistently requested over many years (i.e., not just the latest craze), which have received high praise from readers, and which and other authors count as influential in their own writings. • How to Win Friends & Influence People. Dale Carnegie. I have told my daughters that I will pay them one dollar for every time they read this book. There is nothing in here you don’t intuitively know—but you’ve never been told directly that you should do these things. • Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Steven Covey. If you can make these seven principles into true daily habits, there’s no stopping you! • Think and Grow Rich. Napoleon

Hill.n. I think people keep coming back to this one because it is the antithesis of the “get rich quick” books that pop up every year in a variety of flavors (real estate, stock market, entrepreneurship, variety of internet schemes, MLM marketing, Scott Givens, etc.) Browsers • A Message to Bookstores, Garcia. Elbert and fellow Hubbard. A small reviewer, book, originally daughter, published as an Amanda article, and often Givens reprinted in some kind of gift binding. Hubbard was the ultimate entrepreneur who believed in making your own success. This book has been read, shared, and reread for over a century, and is probably the “original” motivational bestseller. • Man’s Search for Meaning. Victor Frankl. What the heck is a psychology book doing on this list? This book is the background to books like Seven Habits and the gazillioncopy bestseller Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren. A quick read that may very well change your outlook on life forever.

New Year, New Benefits Welcome to a bright new year! Starting over fresh in January tends to make most of us stop and re-examine our lives. We resolve to improve certain aspects about ourselves; diet, exercise, and saving money are always the primary topics of interest. One of the most important assets in your life is your health, and the health of your spouse and children. Did you know? The bacteria in your mouth has been linked to heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, certain head and neck cancers, rheumatoid arthritis and a host of other health-related issues. Obviously, an overabundance of bacteria is also the number-one reason for tooth loss. The correlation between oral health and general health is huge; therefore, cleaning and caring for your mouth has become the new battle cry of preventive medicine. As Benjamin

Going

Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Maintaining your teeth is one sure way to stay healthier and conserve money in the months and years to come. Typically, your dental benefit plan renews in January, when its value is set back to the highest level. In other words, if your plan allows $1000 per year in benefits, you have a fresh $1000 in your account, as of January 1st. The money disappears on December 31st if not utilized. Balances *do not* accrue. Regardless of your relationship with insurance, we recommend you have an oral exam and professional cleaning twice a year. Start your healthy, happy 2016 in the best way possible – with a beautiful, clean and healthy smile! Be sure to call your dentist to schedule a convenient appointment.

Workplace Cold and Flu Season Seek Proper Treatment for Injuries Every year I like to remind business owners that cold and flu season can be not only an inconvenience but also carry a financial cost for the business. “According to the Centers for Disease Control, the flu alone costs U.S. companies $10.4 billion in direct costs including hospitalizations and outpatient visits. The CDC also estimates up to one-fifth of the U.S. population will get the flu in a given flu season, and more than 200,000 Americans will be hospitalized with seasonal, flu-related complications.” Year to year the numbers fluctuate, but we know that antibiotic resistant strains are increasing. It is increasingly important to implement preventative measures that will reduce the spread of illness among your staff members and prevent transmission to your customer base that may come into contact with your staff. I want to again share some free resources with employers to help them successfully navigate this cold and flu season. The first is Healthy Workplace Project. This website, run by health products supplier Kimberly-Clark Worldwide Inc., educates employers and employees about germs in the workplace and how to reduce workplace

absences due to illness. There are short videos you could share with your employees. Use this free resource and implement a great proactive wellness BY Cheryl program in your Vaun, office today! Complete The CDC has a Business free “toolkit”. It is Solutions another great tool 541.981.9566 for your business to start building a solid policy for your workplace sickness policy. Go to cdc. gov and look for Make It Your Business to Fight the Flu: A Toolkit for Businesses and Employers. And remember, little things employers do can send a big message. Implement simple “get well” gestures for staff members that are out sick that let them know you want them to take the time to get well. It will send a positive message to the rest of the staff while reinforcing a workplace policy of staying home when you are sick. Be a proactive employer who works to minimize the impact that a prolonged cold and flu season can have on your business, your customers and your community. Having a motor vehicle accident, slip or fall, or other trauma can throw a wrench in your daily schedule. Immobility, pain, sleeplessness, difficulty focusing, and not being able to care for oneself are some of the problems that can occur from an injury. Most of us take absence of these problems for granted until the problem is upon us. Unfortunately, winters with large amounts of rainfall and poor driving conditions can make injuries like those sustained from a car accident all too common. Some of the more common injuries a person can sustain include a motor vehicle accident or whiplash, pain with onset from lifting, and muscular strains. Outlined below are some of the options for appropriate assessment and treatment of these conditions Motor vehicle collisions can cause debilitating pain through the muscles and joints of the body. A common consequence of a forward to back whiplash motion from a collision is a straightening and removal of the normal curve of the neck. Without this curve, the vertebrae of the neck rely more upon the musculature of the neck holding things upright rather than the ‘building block’ features of the vertebrae. Overusing these muscles can cause significant longstanding pains. Proper assessment of the spine after a whiplash with an exam and X-rays by your chiropractor or a primary care physician are great starting points for recovering from a whiplash. Also included

in a treatment plan should be adjusting the spine back to a proper position, possibly massage therapy for calming muscles in spasm, as well as stretches and strengthening Kevin exercises. Ross, DC A lifting related advanced injury can have Chiropractic similar sequence for assessment, but Clinic 541-928-1010 reeducating the muscles of the back and limbs on how to properly lift can help prevent injuries from occurring in the first place. Some pieces of education that could be lacking for someone who has a lifting related injury are to bend with the hips and knees rather than the back, and keeping the item being lifted as close to the center of your body as possible rather than at arm’s reach. When muscles are overused repetitively or too large of a force is placed on a muscle all at once, a muscular strain can occur. When the body has an injury, scar tissue often forms to prevent further damage. Removal of this scar tissue with appropriate soft tissue treatment, stretching, and strengthening can prevent strain injuries from becoming long term problem spots that don’t quite feel the same as they did before. No matter what health care professionals are involved in the recovery of a whiplash, lifting injury, or strain, the end goal is the same: diminish pain and restore function quickly while preventing reoccurrence. Consider these tips if you encounter one of these injuries and you can save a large amount of time and grief!
