The Meaning of Advent
Members of the Young Marines Color Guard at the recent Vets Helping Vets HQ picnic in Albany.
Celebrating Freedom by Rick Rogers
When it comes to honoring those who have served and those currently in the service of our country, the mid-valley area stands at the forefront. Annually, Linn County hosts the largest Veteran’s Day celebration west of the Mississippi. This year’s theme is: “STARS Unlimited – STRIPES United”. It all begins on November 10 with the Veteran of the Year banquet, to be held starting at 6PM this year at the American Legion Post 51 in Lebanon. Keynote speaker will be Rear Admiral Nancy Norton, an Oregon native. Reservations for the banquet can be made by calling: 541-981-2390. The morning of November 11 will get underway beginning at 6:30AM with a Veteran’s Day breakfast at West Albany High School and an 8AM breakfast at the Eagles Lodge in downtown Albany. At 8:30AM, there will be a Memorial Service at the Linn County Veteran’s Memorial at Timber Linn Park in Albany. The much-anticipated Grand Parade will begin at 11AM and proceed over the Pacific Boulevard overpass, down the ramp onto Lyon Street, and continuing to Second Avenue where it will turn west through downtown Albany. The parade contains all kinds of military and commercial entries, marching bands and motorcycle groups, all drawing national attention.
The Veteran’s Day parade in Albany draws thousands of spectators annually.
After the parade, special lunches and entertainment are planned for veterans at the American Legion Post 10 and VFW post 584, both in Albany. Other events will take place on the evening of Saturday, November 14, when the annual BiMart Freedom Fest, sponsored by Hertz Car Sales and Rife’s Home Furnishings, will take place at American Legion Post 10 in Albany, offering a free dinner for all veterans, active duty military personnel and their families starting at 6PM. The evening will also feature entertainment, dancing, and more. Another part of the celebration not to be missed is the “Wall of Honor;” paying tribute to all of those who have lost their lives in service to our country since 9-11. The wall has be reconstructed and updated by the Albany-based Vets Helping Vets HQ and is currently on display through November 14th at Heritage Mall in Albany. The wall is being presented through the generosity of Freedom Fest sponsor, Cadwell Realty Group, presenting the Homes for Heroes program. A salute to all who have served and are now serving from all of us at High Points. Editors Note: For more on the Wall of Honor, please see the Points for Profit section in this issue of High Points.

These are some of the Advent calendars available at Willamette valley Christian Supply in Corvallis.
by Karen Rogers The Advent season starts on November 29 this year, as usual, being celebrated on the Sunday nearest November 30. The word “advent” comes from the Latin “adventus” which means “coming;” anticipating the birth of Christ. It also marks the start of the ecclesiastical year in the western church. Advent was first celebrated around A.D. 380 and its length varied from forty days to four weeks, and initially involved strict fasting which, fortunately, is no longer required. In the ninth century, the duration was fixed at the current four weeks. Tradition holds that each week represents the four Manifestations of Christ- the first week is the Coming of Christ as a man, the second is the Coming into the human heart, the third is the Coming at the individual’s death, and the fourth is the Coming at the last day. Many interesting customs mark the Advent Season, among which are the lighting of candles on each of the four Sundays. Some candles are placed on an upward slanting holder representing the increasing anticipation as Christmas nears. In some areas, candles are incorporated into a wreath of greenery that can be hung from the ceiling. That sounds somewhat iffy and dangerous to me. I think I will keep mine on the table isolated from any flammable objects! Advent calendars are also popular, featuring a daily observance and usually producing a resulting treat. Many have windows that open to reveal a quotation from Scriptures. They are generally very attractive and make a fine holiday decoration. So, as we slide into Yuletide, Advent gives us something to consider and appreciate on a daily basis.

Poor Fruitcake! Everybody has heard the trite old jokes about fruitcakepassing them down for generations, endlessly re-gifting them and using them as doorstops. It’s horrible to malign a harmless dessert! I have made this recipe for decades and no one ever turns it down. It makes one large tube pan and one loaf cake. Don’t try to use an elaborate pan-spray the pans and line them with parchment paper for best results. You will need a a very large mixing bowl, HUGE, actually. In your large bowl, mix a total of 3 pounds red and green candied cherries and candied pineapple. Add 1 pound chopped dates, 2 C raisins, 2 C golden raisins and 4 C chopped walnuts. Mix well. In another bowl, sift 5 ½ C flour with 1 rounded tbsp baking powder and 2 tsps salt. Sift over the fruit mix and stir well. In a mixer bowl, cream 1 C butter with 2 C sugar and add 7 eggs, one at a time and beating well. Add 2 tsps vanilla and 1 C rum or bourbon and ½ C orange juice. Pour the batter over the fruit, using about one-fourth at a time. You may find it easiest to literally mix it by hand! Heat the oven to 300 degrees. Spoon the batter into the tube pan first, until it is
Now is the time to make fruitcake for the holidays ahead. about three-fourths full, then fill the loaf pan. Bake them on a large baking sheet to prevent the bottoms from browning too fast. The loaf will take about one hour and the tube pan will take 2 ½ to 3 hours, check with a thermometer for doneness. If they brown too fast, cover them with foil. Cool on racks, and when cool, remove from pans and wrap in several thicknesses of cheese cloth soaked in rum or bourbon. Wrap tightly in foil and allow to mellow for several days. Dose the cake with liquor about once per week.. Properly wrapped and dosed this cake will keep indefinitely. It really is fun to break out a delicious fruitcake at a June tea party!

The Great American Smokeout
Since 1977, the American Cancer Society has sponsored the Great American Smokeout. Held annually on the third Thursday of November, tobacco users nationwide are encouraged to spend one day tobacco-free; in the hopes they will consider quitting altogether. Smoking is a factor in one out of every five deaths in the US and 8.6 million people are currently struggling with a serious smoking-related illness. Unfortunately, cigarette smoking is not the sole issue; there are consequences to any form of nicotine use (i.e. chewing tobacco, cigars, snuff, “vapor” cigarettes, nicotine gum, etc.). Nicotine raises blood pressure and blood sugar, may damage heart tissue, and greatly increases one’s cancer risk. The Great American Smokeout highlights the many resources available to those who want to quit using tobacco/ nicotine. If you have failed to quit in the past, keep trying! Examine the materials available and make a plan. There are two components that must be addressed in order to improve one’s chances for a successful quit attempt: addiction and habit. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. There are prescription medications that can reduce the strong cravings you may
experience and thereby strengthen your resolve. You may also taper off nicotine gradually by switching to nicotine patches, lozenges, or gum. The two approaches Pamela can be combined for Becker, RpH maximum benefit, and your insurance may Rice’s help with the cost. Pharmacy Ask your pharmacist & Gifts for more information on these options. A “Pill Box Secondly, tobacco/ Pharmacy” nicotine use is often habitual. There is a definite pattern to when it is used during the day or the stimuli that prompts one to use. Do you look forward to the first cigarette of the day? Can you sit in your favorite chair at night, drive your car, or have a cup of coffee without lighting up? Think about when you are most likely to be vulnerable; is it when you are around others who are using tobacco? Identify your “weak spots” and begin to formulate a strategy to avoid these pitfalls. Perhaps you know of a friend or family member who is also thinking about quitting—there is strength in numbers! You may also get support 24 hours a day by calling the Oregon Quit Line: 1-800-QUIT NOW, Spanish speakers dial: 1-855-DEJELO YA. Whether you are ready to quit, or just giving it some thought, the knowledgeable staff at Rice’s Pharmacy is happy to assist you!

Treating at the Source Earth of the Pain Shopp As undesirable as pain is, the various sensations of pain are messages our bodies try to communicate to us. Whether pain comes from a single traumatic event like a slip, or repeated overuse in a bad position like desk work with head held forward, the nervous system responds. This response is usually not in a positive way! When a door is securely on hinges and placed into a doorway properly, it opens and closes fully and moves almost effortlessly. Over time due to usage, this door will not stay perfectly aligned with the doorway nor on the hinges equally. The door will still open and close, but it may not open all the way and may not be effortless to open either. Eventually that door may even make loud noises upon opening or closing. A similar progression can happen with joints in the body as well, especially the joints of the spine. Lifting while using the back and not the knees, sitting at a computer with head and shoulders creeping forward, and slouching into a comfy couch all contribute to the same problematic pattern. When the joints of the spine are in great alignment, the weight above that area will mostly be supported by the structural part of the spine, like building blocks. Absence of this good alignment can cause extra friction (wear-and-tear) and also cause muscles to be

How would someone know if they have a posture related pain? The best way to tell is by having a health care professional such as a chiropractor, physical therapist, or occupational therapist examine the problem areas. Sometimes something as simple as changing a sleeping position or pillow, avoiding holding a phone to the ear with the shoulder, or scooting all the way back in a chair when sitting can dramatically reduce pain over time. Treatment like chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, and stretching or strengthening exercises can all play positive roles in recovery from many painful ailments.

Fall Prevention Did you know that more than 33% of adults in the United States who are 65 or older fall each year? Falls are also the leading cause of accidental death in older adults. The good news is that we can do a lot to prevent falls. While many factors affect the risk of falling, age is a major contributor. Of adults 65 years or older who fall, 20-30% suffer moderate to severe injuries that increase the need for assisted-living care and chances of early death. Fall Facts: • Falls are the leading cause of accidental death in older people • Falls are one of the most common problems causing older people to lose their independence • For a person 72 or older, the average health care cost of a fall injury is over $20,000 How to Reduce the Risk of Falling: • Exercise – Exercise strengthens muscles and can improve balance and coordination. Bad Breath
Halitosis, or bad breath, is an unpleasant and often embarrassing condition for many people. The condition can be caused by several different factors.
Times
What causes bad breath? • Food. It really doesn’t matter whether you eat garlic or apples, what you eat does affect the air you breathe out. Food particles, when left in your mouth, begin to collect bacteria, which can cause bad breath. • Gum disease. Persistent bad breath or a continual bad taste may be a warning sign of gum disease caused by excess bacteria. There are naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth; however, as the level increases, so does your propensity toward disease. • Dry mouth. A decrease in saliva can be caused by various medications, a salivary gland problem or continuously breathing through your mouth. Dry mouth can be a symptom of diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, or liver and kidney disease.

• Smoking and tobacco. Using tobacco products can cause staining on your teeth, bad breath along with gum disease, a higher risk for developing oral cancer and a diminished taste in food. Smoking also dries out the tissue of the mouth and face, causing bad breath and premature aging. • Medical conditions. Certain diseases have symptoms related to bad breath such as sinus or lung infections, bronchitis, and diabetes. Your overall heath is really indicated by the quality of your breath.

What to do? Most of the time bad breath is the result of poor oral hygiene. Basically, you aren’t brushing or flossing frequently enough. Brush for two minutes twice a daily. Brush your tongue, gums and even the roof of your mouth. In most cases, bad breath comes from the gums and tongue. Regular exams by your dentist will allow detection of problems like gum disease or dry mouth, so you can avoid the consequences of bad breath.

If The Walls Could Talk “Inside Days” are Coming
Travel
Well, here we are getting closer to “Old Man Winter” again. The time is coming to roll the clocks back and stow away the shorts and flip-flops. I am going to miss those long days of light and warm Summer nights. Aren’t you? And as we transition into the dark colder days ahead, we find ourselves spending more and more of our time inside. For most of us, the living or family room is where we spend those long Winter nights. So, now might be the time to buff up that favorite hangout with some new colors. Maybe you could add a gas fireplace to bring a little coziness into the room. You could also change out those leaky old windows to add to the warmth. And while you’re at it, why not fix that squeaky old ceiling fan that goes, “rinka-rinka-rinka?” Your favorite Winter room can be anything you want

When your body is free from toxins, it will be able to heal itself too. One of the best ways to detox your entire system is with the use of cleansing herbs. This isn’t just something you do once and then you’re done. It’s a program you can use throughout your life to help your body to dispel toxins daily and keep it running properly. Whenever possible, eat organic foods and drink a lot of fresh water. Water helps flush the toxins from your body. Here are a few herbs that are known to eliminate toxins from the body: • Juniper berries promote good urinary system health. They strengthen and detoxify the urinary tract, kidneys and bladder. Not to be used long term as they can overtax the kidneys. • Nettle Root and Leaf helps to clean the body and especially the urinary system of toxins. Like Juniper berries, they should not be taken long

Vets Helping Vets HQ board member and Bunker Manager Pat Bailey examines the Wall of Honor at Heritage Mall.
Wall of Honor By Rick Rogers
Happy Thanksgiving! Points for Profit meeting is November 24, 2015 from 6-8pm at the Eagles in Albany. Taqueria Alonzo will be catering. The theme is Thanksgiving. If you would like to reserve a dinner please RSVP by 5pm on November 23, 2015 to info@ pointsforprofit.org or call (541) 791-2901. For more information visit pointsforprofit.org.
Now through November 14th, you can experience a moving event that pays tribute to all military members who have lost their lives in the service to their country since 9-ll. The Wall of Honor is on display in Heritage Mall in Albany inside the mall, near the entrance to Ross Dress For Less. This is not the old Wall you may have seen at the mall in years past. Last year, custody of the wall was transferred from InSpirit Marketing to the all-volunteer Albany-based Vets Helping Vets HQ. During the past year, thousands of dollars and over 3,000 volunteer hours have been spent updating and completing the wall so that those killed in the mid-east conflicts would have photographs, many in color, and correct biographical information to accompany their pictures. Once the thousands of bios were collected and sorted, they were assigned a place on the wall according to the time period and specific
military operation in which they were killed. Project coordinator Pat Bailey says it took many days and long nights to get the wall ready to display at the Albany Mall. Many local businesses and individuals contributed time and money to get the wall up and running. That includes the Homes for Heroes program which works to help veterans and others such as police, fire, teachers and other public service workers into homes. Each panel was manufactured and created into the finished form by Xtreme Grafx of Albany. Vets Helping Vets HQ founder Victor Kuhns says that after its time at Heritage Mall, the wall will travel to other locations around the state. The sad part is that the wall is constructed so that additional panels can be added as conflicts in the mid-east continue. Vets Helping Vets is a Points for Profit non-profit member and we are proud of them and the work they do to help veterans and to preserve the memory of those who have fallen.

Let’s face it: Healthy, growing marriages don’t just happen. Time and energy must be invested in them! Marriage Works. Family Matters (MWFM) is a local non-profit that is determined to help as many couples as possible have the marriage they always wanted. Hurting marriages can be healed. Good marriages can become great! In 2010, Dave Jackson (MWFM Executive Director, Marriage & Family Therapist, and Pastor) had a vision to start an ongoing marriage education and support group in the community, believing that healthy marriages lead to healthy homes and a healthier community. Five years later, the group is still meeting, having impacted dozens of marriages throughout the Willamette Valley. When marriage gets tough, some consider divorce as an option. Others stay together, but are miserable. The Third Option: Building Healthy Marriages (TTO) is a nationally-recognized program (thethirdoption.com) that helps participants in groups across the country
build stronger, more fulfilling marriages. In a fun, relaxed setting, TTO cycles through a comprehensive set of relationship skills that help people better understand themselves and their spouse, learn how to communicate in healthier ways, and be more comfortable and confident in working through difficulties together as a team. TTO meets on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays of each month in a meeting room at Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis from 6:458:45pm. Any week is a good week. There is (free) childcare for kids who can swim. There is a recommended donation of $5/meeting/adult. How are you investing in your most important relationships? Marriage Works. Family Matters. offers hope, help and healing to those who want to build (and restore) healthy relationships. In addition to TTO, they also offer marriage retreats, conflict mediation services, and professional counseling to individuals, couples and families. Visit MWFM.org for more information.

Tips for Retail Madness
Going
“We have not even celebrated Thanksgiving!” “Consumerism, Consumerism, Consumerism!” Perhaps you have said one of these comments as you notice Christmas items arriving in stores. Our Christmas gifts, books, and music arrived in September. Among many challenges in a competitive and dying Christian retail industry is the seasonal clock that never stops. I’m ordering Christmas in February and stocking up and planning for Easter. When September arrives, we have already started planning for the Christmas floor design. All this can be overwhelming for the store owner and a frustration for the consumer that wants to celebrate each holiday without missing or overlooking its emphasis and meaning. Our culture has made a mint off of the anticipation of the pending Christmas rush. Because of this continual downward spiral in our society, I would like to offer a number of holiday tips that will settle our anxious thoughts: 1 Remember the meaning and purpose for each holiday. Thanksgiving is critical and a great time to express gratitude to God as a family for His provision. The meaning of Christmas is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. He truly is the Reason for the Season. 2 Plan ahead with a budget for your holiday spending and stick to it. Be

careful to not impulse buy which can deplete the pocket books quickly. One of the ways our family saves money during Christmas is by drawing names and making a spending cap. Keven Ferguson, 3 Co-worker spending has Willamette become a major Valley boom in the market Christian place. Be careful not to establish Supply an unnecessary expectation early on. Less is better. A card of thanksgiving versus an expensive bottle of wine is very sufficient. 4 Establish a ‘giving project’ for your family during Christmas. This helps with not becoming selfish as you open gifts. We have what is called a World Jar that we contribute to all through the year. We then donate this to ministries that are in need to help those less fortunate. 5 The number of gifts matters. Again, less is better, especially as it relates to children. We have found that our kids can become non-appreciative with an over-abundance of presents. 6 Buy with purpose and meaning. Christmas is a great time to buy a new Bible, devotional, or gift that points us toward Jesus. 7 Respect the heartbroken during the holidays. For many, the holidays bring up memories of lost loved ones,

Memories Laurel and Hardy Comedy teams have pretty much been around since movies first started flickering on a screen. Probably the most famous of the early silent movie teams would have to be Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Each started out in films on their own with Laurel actually producing and directing many of Hardy’s original solo comedy short subjects. It wasn’t long before the two started to team up in a series of iconic silent shorts that, despite being somewhat dated, can sill make us chuckle today. The team appeared in dozens of silent comedies, most of which are still available today on DVD’s put out by various manufacturers, before making the transition to sound films. Once sound arrived in theaters in 1927, producer Hal Roach continued the Laurel and Hardy short subject series with hilarious results. The shorts continued through the 1930s and 1940s augmented by a number of feature films made and distributed by major studios such as M-G-M and RKO. One of the most remembered is “Way Out West” from M-G-M in 1937. This is the story of the two boys trying to get a deed to a gold mine delivered to a young girl in an old west town after the deed is

left to her by her deceased father. Of course, the town is full of shifty eyed characters who want to get their hands on the deed. The antics in “Way Out West” leave the audience in stitches Rick from the beginning Rogers to the end. Like Movies many of the Laurel and DVDs and Hardy feature films, this one features two musical numbers. Not only were Laurel and Hardy excellent comedians, they were also excellent singers. In one of the numbers, the boys are accompanied by a quartet of cowboys who’s lead singer is Chill Wills, who would, nearly 20 years later, become known as the voice of Francis the Talking Mule in a series of comedies for Universal Studios. Another good bet is the RKO film “The Flying Deuces.” In this one, the boys join the French Foreign Legion to forget a woman Hardy has fallen in love with. The problem is that, unbeknownst to Hardy, the woman is the post commandant’s wife. In this one, the boys entice the camp of Legionaries to join them in a rousing rendition of “Shine On Harvest Moon” Watch for Laurel and Hardy on DVD from major internet sources, and in some cases, on VHS tapes at thrift stores. They will put a smile on your face!

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Tom Rob Smith is able to make the spectres of the past rise again to create a convincingly realistic Soviet thriller. Unlike so many spy novels of the Soviet era, this is not West vs East, but internal friction within the USSR itself. When the story begins, our main character, Leo Demidov is a devoted officer of the MGB, the secret police. It doesn’t take much to guess that he will soon be on the run from his old employers. However, this book excels in this transformation from “bad Soviet guy” to “good free-thinking guy” because not once does Leo work against the state out of political or philosophical reasons. Unlike so many of the old spy novels, this book does not rely on a Western mindset or our own propaganda. Instead, Leo is forced into his actions by the State machinery itself. If Kafka had written a spy novel, it would have been like this. When Leo finds the body of a murdered child with injuries identical to those of another child whose case he investigated, Leo’s world is shattered. Leo himself officially declared this previous death an accident. The second death has been blamed on an insane
man. Leo realizes that the Soviet justice system provides a perfect cover for a serial killer: in order to stick to the party line, all Scott murders must be Givens, quickly blamed Browsers on undesirables Bookstores, including those who and fellow can be proven to reviewer, have Western ties or daughter, leanings. Amanda Unsolved Givens murders are unacceptable; a culprit must be found. Also: the State does not make mistakes. If Leo is right about the existence of a serial killer, then he is declaring that the State made dozens of wrong verdicts, and executed dozens of convicted “killers” wrongly. This, of co urse, is anti-Soviet, and Leo knows that by following this lead he becomes an enemy of the State who is more dangerous to the government than the serial killer himself. Smith’s novel almost reads more like a fantasy novel than a thriller because he is more interested in creating—in this case, re-creating— and exploring a world than he is in a fast-paced, cliff-hanging plot. However, this does at least have the structure of a mystery/thriller, and although the whodunit part isn’t too much of a mystery, the conclusion will still have you biting your nails.

Winter Hazards for Pets By Dr. Eric Glaze, Albany Animal Hospital Winter is coming, so I thought I’d go through a quick refresher of some common wintertime hazards for our pets. First off, please bring pets inside when temperatures get to cold. It doesn’t have to be below freezing for dog and cats to get too cold. Cats will sometimes seek out warmth near the engines of cars, so make sure to bang on the hood or honk the horn of your car before starting it up to scare away a cat that may be seeking shelter from the weather. We see some nasty fan belt injuries on cats during this time of year for this reason. Please consider using “pet safe” antifreeze that uses the ingredient propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol. Although it is not really safe, at least it is not incredibly lethal. A cat that walks through a puddle of deadly ethylene glycol can ingest a lethal amount simply by grooming its feet. In addition, please be aware that certain de-icing compounds including salts can be very irritating to your pet’s paw pads. It’s a good idea to pay close attention to your dog’s feet during winter months. If they walk through an area that has been de-iced, make sure to clean their feet when you get home. If you use a fireplace, make
Home Cheer Finds
sure that it is pet proof. Pets can be attracted to the flicker of flames, including candles, so make sure that no open flames are left unattended. If you don’t already have a smoke detector that also detects carbon monoxide, then please invest in one. Winter time is the season when carbon monoxide poisoning peaks. People who have gas powered devices like furnaces and stoves should definitely have these detectors. Small pets, especially pet birds, are very sensitive to this gas and can show symptoms including death long before we get sick, hence the term “the canary in the coal mine”. If you plan on having a live Christmas tree, then please make sure your pets can’t get at the water at the base, especially if you add liquid fertilizers. Also avoid tinsel on trees if you have cats. When ingested, tinsel can obstruct a cat’s intestines in a very nasty way. Also watch out for the ribbons and fancy string that are sometimes used to wrap presents, as these can obstruct a cat’s intestines too. Mistletoe and poinsettias are mild to moderately toxic to dogs and cats. Rarely is enough ingested to cause serious damage to a dog or cat, but it is best to keep these plants out of reach. Hopefully the points listed here will help some pets avoid an emergency trip to the veterinarian this season.

Part 3 – What You Need to Tips for Filing Taste Know About Oregon’s New Gamean Amended Return Paid Sick Leave Law
Information
employees could use the sick leave law as an easy way to be late 40 times during the year, with no consequences. The law allows employees to take paid sick leave in one-hour BY Cheryl increments. In most Vaun, cases, employers Complete cannot ask for Business medical certification Solutions until someone uses 541.981.9566 three consecutive days of sick leave. So, employees could call in, saying they felt ill just before the shift started, and will be up to an hour late to work. Employers may ask for medical certification if they observe a “pattern of abuse,” but depending on the type of alleged condition (allergies, migraine, etc.), it may be difficult for a health care provider to say that the employee didn’t legitimately need to be late 40 times. In the last of this 4 part series I will discuss 3 more challenging aspects every employer will need to avoid to ensure compliance with the sick leave law. 1. Tax form to amend your return. Use Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to correct your tax return. You must file a paper Form 1040X; it can’t be e-filed. You can get the form on IRS.gov/forms at any time. See the Form 1040X instructions for the address where you should mail your form. 2. Amend to correct errors. You should file an amended tax return to correct errors or make changes to your original tax return. For example, you should amend to change your filing status, or to correct your income, deductions or credits. 3. Don’t amend for math errors, missing forms. You normally don’t need to file an amended return to correct math errors. The IRS will automatically correct those for you. Also, do not file an amended return if you forgot to attach tax forms, such as a Form W-2 or a schedule. The IRS will mail you a request for them in most cases.

This is part 3 in my 4 part series on Oregon’s new sick leave law that goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. Last month I discussed eligibility periods and accrual methods for sick leave time. This month I will discuss 2 of the 5 challenging aspects of the sick leave law that employers need to know to assure they remain in compliance. IMPORTANT: Broad Reasons for Leave. An employee doesn’t have to be sick in order to use sick leave. Employees may use sick leave not only for their own illness, injury, or health condition, but also for that of a family member (spouse, parent, parent-in-law, child, grandparent, or grandchild). Leave is also permitted to address domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault, or stalking of employees or their minor children or dependents. Employees may also take leave if a public health emergency excludes them from their workplace, excludes their children from school or a care facility, or requires them to care for a covered family member. 40 tardies per year: Chronically tardy
Have you found that you made an error on your federal tax return? If so, you may need to file an amended return. Here are ten tips that can help you file:
4. Most taxpayers don’t need to amend to correct Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, errors. Eligible taxpayers who filed a 2014 tax Cathy return and claimed a Baker, premium tax credit American Bookkeeping using incorrect information from either and Tax the federally-facili430 2nd Ave SE tated or a state-based Albany, OR Health Insurance 541.926.7982 Marketplace, generally do not have to file an amended return regardless of the nature of the error, even if additional taxes would be owed. The IRS may contact you to ask for a copy of your corrected Form 1095-A to verify the information. 5. Time limit to claim a refund. You usually have three years from the date you filed your original tax return to file Form 1040X to claim a refund. You can file it within two years from the date you paid the tax, if that date is later. That means the last day for most people to file a 2011 claim for a refund is April 15, 2015. See the Form 1040X instructions for special rules that apply to some claims. 6. Separate forms for each year. If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each year.

Garden to Decor Often as we go about pruning and trimming as the weather turns to more rain and colder nights, we lose sight of all the fall gems from the garden that, with a little preparation, can make great accents inside. 1. Leaves- save some maple, oak or other leaves that turn bright colors and fall to the ground. Dry them and use them as accents with pinecones, twigs and maybe gourds in a wicker basket. 2. Twigs and branches- cut them at varying lengths (even as high as 5 or 6ft depending upon your ceiling, dry them some and either spray paint them white, or just clear coat them and use them as an arrangement in the corner of your living room or kitchen. These are just a couple of ideas to get your minds going. We love being outside, so it’s fun to bring some of the outside in for the winter months. Planting & Harvesting You can continue to tuck spring-flowering bulbs into the landscape as long as soil is workable. Look for bargains on bulbs -- many retailers will be trying to wrap up sales and empty inventory. Plant a container with pretty winter views in mind. Pansy, viola, flowering stock, ornamental cabbage, nemesia -these and other annuals can dress a pot

• Clinging birds, like chickadees and nuthatches, will visit mesh feeders that lack perches. • Goldfinches hang on thistle sock feeders. • Woodpeckers and flickers cling to suet cages. • Ground feeders, like juncos, pine siskins, and doves, favor a groundlevel feeding tray. • If squirrels pester feeders, look for baffles or squirrel-proof posts. • Safflower seed isn’t a favorite among squirrels; filling feeders with it may discourage them. • Add a heater to an existing birdbath or invest in a heated birdbath. Keep baths filled. Birds will come to depend on the fresh water source you provide. If you’re adding a heated birdbath to a deck, look for a rail-mount bath that tilts for easy cleaning.

You should mail each year in separate envelopes. Note the tax year of the return you are amending at the top of Form 1040X. Check the form’s instructions for where to mail your return. 7. Attach other forms with changes. If you use other IRS forms or schedules to make changes, make sure to attach them to your Form 1040X. 8. When to file for second refund. If you are due a refund from your original return, wait to get that refund before filing Form 1040X to claim an additional refund. Amended returns take up to 16 weeks to process. You may spend your original refund while you wait for any additional refund. 9. Pay added tax as soon as you can. If you owe more tax, file your Form 1040X and pay the tax as soon as you can. This will stop added interest and penalties. Use IRS Direct Pay to pay your tax directly from your checking or savings account.
10. Track your amended return. You can track the status of your amended tax return three weeks after you file with ‘Where’s My Amended Return?’ This tool is on IRS.gov or by phone at 866-464-2050. It is available in English and in Spanish. The tool can track the status of an amended return for the current year and up to three years back. To use ‘Where’s My Amended Return?’ enter your taxpayer identification number, which is usually your Social Security number. You will also enter your date of birth and zip code. If you have filed amended returns for multiple years, you can check each year one at a time.
