Apples on the tree welcome in the Fall season.
Fruits of Fall
by Karen Rogers
As September makes its entrance, the mighty fall fruits flex their muscles! There are a great many varieties of apples, pears, plums, kiwis, and figs that are grown in the Mid- Willamette Valley. Over 8,000 types of apples exist and as many pears. Asian Pears are as numerous- please do NOT call them “pear apples,” they deserve their own dignity. Seek out and try some unfamiliar fruits. New varieties are not necessarily better; I once tried an experimental apple that disturbingly tasted like canned fruit cocktail, complete with the tinny taste! If an apple has been around for generations, there’s a reason. Farmers’ Markets and fruit stands are excellent places to try new- to- you kinds. Certain raspberries put on a fall crop, so make good use of this ethereal fruit. Late varieties of blue berries are also available, as well as brown turkey figs. But this is where fresh, crisp apples and buttery pears really stand out. Try some different cooking
Many varieties of pears are also readily available.
techniques, such as the poached pears in this issue. Fresh cider and perry, made from pears, become available. If you can find it, there is a liqueur called “Poire Guillaume” which is distilled from pear juice that is amazing poured over ice cream or bread pudding. The humble quince appears on the scene and nobody knows what to do with it! In its raw state, it resembles cinder blocks dipped in lemon juice, but peeled and poached slowly, with sugar and cinnamon and a good dab of real butter, it becomes pink and suave and charming. They also make an astounding jelly. Both hardy and fuzzy kiwis are getting ripe- the small, smooth skinned hardies have more vitamin A and C than regular kiwis and do not have to be peeled. Eat them like grapes and spit out the skin. And please, never, ever call them “wee kees” in my presence!!! Editor’s Note: You will find a complete listing of local farmers’ markets in the Good Times section of this issue of High Points.
Tasty plums are a real treat this time of year.
by Rick Rogers If you love antiques and the thrill of finding vintage treasures, then the mid-valley has a weekend for you. Antique hunters from throughout Oregon will be converging on Albany and the city of Coburg, off of I-5, just north of Eugene, for two days of exploration for the perfect item for your collection, fun, food, entertainment, and more on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. On Saturday people will flock to the annual event in downtown Albany known as “Antiques in the Streets.” Organizers say there will nearly 40 dealers from throughout Oregon who will be setting up booths along Broadalbin Street between First Ave. and the Linn County Courthouse offering everything from vintage furniture to small collectable items for sale. In addition, you will also find thousands of great buys at the other downtown area’s antique shops just waiting to be discovered. There will also be an entertainment stage set up in front of the Courthouse steps on Fourth Avenue. The Albany event will also feature a Classic Car Show with vehicles on display along Second and Third Avenues with prizes awarded at the end of the day. For vendor and other information on the sale and car show, contact Sharon at the Albany Antiques Mall in downtown Albany. On Sunday, the antique lovers attention turns to the City of Coburg, north of Eugene, for the annual “Antique and Vintage Fair” centered around the city park, adjacent to downtown. Parking is available nearby with a shuttle service to the sale site for $5.00. Organizers say they are expecting 300 dealers to set up this year offering just about anything imaginable to those seeking out the perfect vintage treasure. Food and entertainment are also part of the festivities and the city’s permanent antique shops will also be open to welcome visitors. The Coburg event is one of the oldest celebrations of its type, marking its 28th year. For more information and how to obtain vendor space contact the Coburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Hours for both of the shows are 8AM until 4PM on their respective days. Get ready to shop-till-you-drop and have a great time at these two September events.

Pears are just starting to come into their own as summer winds down and it’s a great time to make poached pears. They can run from simple to elegant and from breakfast to dinner parties. You can peel and quarter them or poach whole- to core the whole pear, go through the blossom end with a melon baller to remove the seeds. They work well cooked in water or wine, either white or red, and you can add candied or fresh ginger, orange or lemon peel, and cinnamon or spices to taste. If you use spices, try to use whole spices for a cleaner presentation. The wine can be very inexpensive, as it will be sweetened, spiced, and boiled. You can use sugar or Splenda as both work very well. You will need about 6 C liquid for 6 to 8 pears. Add about ½ C sugar or substitute, flavor it and simmer. You can peel and quarter or leave them whole. Cook at a gentle simmer, just until tender. I prefer them well chilled and they’re great for breakfast. To make the classic dessert, Poires Belle Helene, use Bosc pears and poach them whole. Simmer 6 C wine of your choice with 1 C sugar, 1 piece of stick cinnamon, a few cloves, ½ tsp vanilla and the zest of 1 orange. Add the cored and
Karen’s delicious Poached Pears drizzled with dark chocolate and topped with a real whipped cream rosette. peeled pears and simmer just until tender. Remove the pears and chill. Be sure to save the liquid- it can be reused and gets better each time. Serve the pears upright on a plate with vanilla ice cream with a simple ganache as a sauce. Microwave 8 ounces of good dark chocolate about 30 seconds. Bring 1/3 C heavy cream to a boil and pour over the chocolate and stir until blended and smooth. Drizzle the chocolate over the pears and ice cream and top with a pert little rosette of whipped cream! This elegant presentation can be prepared ahead of time and assembled quickly at the last moment. Every one will be impressed and your reputation as a cook will soar!

The Best Defense is a Great Offense
While enjoying another lovely eighty degree day on my deck, I was shocked to see the leaves on the maple tree were orange-tipped. Ready or not, here comes fall… and flu season! Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious respiratory virus. People who have contracted it can spread the virus to others from the day BEFORE the first symptoms appear, until seven days AFTER their symptoms resolve. Influenza causes sudden, severe symptoms including: fever, body aches, chills, head and chest congestion, sore throat, cough, nausea/ diarrhea, and fatigue. The symptoms usually persist for 1-2 weeks, but secondary complications such as: pneumonia, dehydration, ear or sinus infection, or worsening of existing health issues may prolong recovery. The best defense against the flu virus is to take advantage of the vaccines that are offered annually in the fall. It is important to get a dose of vaccine each year for two reasons: the virus (and thus the vaccine) changes

Every year I hear of people claiming to have gotten the flu from the shot. It is possible to become ill after being unwittingly exposed to the virus just before or right after getting a flu shot, but the shot itself cannot cause the flu. There is an appropriate injectable influenza vaccine for all ages and most health conditions, including pregnancy. This form of vaccine is well-tolerated and causes very few side effects. The nasal mist and the injectable vaccines both provide protection against the same influenza strains. Exercising
Exercise is a major component to staying healthy. It is accomplished in many different ways, intensity levels and time frames. Keeping this in mind, a person really needs to put some thought into it when considering a workout program. Remember it is supposed to improve or maintain health so injuries must be avoided. Goals must be set, what does the individual want to accomplish from working out and exercising? Does he/she want to improve cardio vascular endurance, improve strength, burn calories to help maintain a healthy weight or to improve their mental clarity. Strength is important as a person ages. Balance, getting up and down from the seated position and getting from point A to point B are some major quality of life activities that need to be maintained. You Deserve a Medicare Prescription Drug Plans – Change or Renew? GoingBeautiful Smile Buys
We are fast approaching the Open Enrollment Period for Medicare plans; Part C – Medicare Advantage plans and Part D – Medicare Prescription Drug plans. Individuals who are Medicare beneficiaries are able to make changes during this period, October 15, 2015 through December 7, 2015. Medicare allows Insurance Carriers to change their formulary at any time of the year. If you are paying more for your prescription drug, you should ask why. In is recommended by Medicare that insurance companies inform their members when a change is occurring. This means you will receive a letter thirty (30) days before the change is to take place. Did not get a letter? You should call the plan and ask why. It is important to find out why. What if you were paying $45 a month for a drug and then it changed to $95? This is an indication that the drug formulary changed and the drug is now listed as a Tier 4 instead of a Tier 3 – higher cost for you, the member. You can file an exception to request the drug stays at Tier 3 and claim financial hardship. Another suggestion – please check your medications against the Annual Notice of Change that a Medicare Prescription Drug plan is to provide to each member on or before October 1st of every year. This notice will let you know any changes for the coming year, 2016. Have the monthly premium changed?
Is the Medicare Prescription Drug plan now charging an annual deductible? Are all your drugs listed in the formulary? You should make changes when these events occur. A good way to review Donna R. plans available for you Green is by going to www. Northwest Medicare.gov web site. financial There is a button you can Services click at the first page and it 541-757-7701 is titled “Find Plans.” Click on that button and fill in zip code, answer questions, and start inputting your prescription drugs. You will need to know the drug name, the dose, and quantity you take. Then you are able to pick a Pharmacy and then choose plans to review. At this website, it allows you to compare up to 3 plans. It takes practice to master this web site and to learn areas as to how to optimize your time and best options. If you don’t have access to the internet, there are resources out there to help you. As an agent, I help individuals shop for Medicare Prescription Drug plans. I do have access to the internet and the appointment can take ½ hour to 1 hour of your time. As an agent, I am required to go through training and become certified to sell Medicare Plans and continual education to maintain my insurance license. An Agent will be able to educate you and act as your advocate with the plan. Another resource is our public libraries. If you have more questions, please call me, Donna Green, at 541-757-7701.

Your smile is your most important social asset. It’s the first thing others notice about you. However, if your smile isn’t like you want it to be, consider these modern dental techniques: Whitening: The whitening products used by dental professionals are far superior to what is offered in stores, and your dentist can suggest the best option for you. Our superior products can whiten teeth up to eight shades, and remove years of staining and discoloration. We can also tailor your whitening to existing crowns or other dental restorations. Bonding: When teeth are chipped, discolored, or in need of reshaping, dentists use bonding material to restore them to beauty or correct their shape. Bonding uses a composite resin to coat the tooth’s surface, which is then reshaped, much like sculpture. Bonding can cover stains, close minor gaps between teeth, and correct moderately misshapen teeth. Once the resin is applied to the

tooth’s surface, it is hardened with a high-intensity light and polished to perfection. Your restoration is color and shape matched to surrounding teeth. Implants: If you’re missing one tooth or several due to disease or trauma, dental implants are the ideal replacement. New technology allows your dentist to support partial dentures with implants, which adds stability, comfort and a complete diet for patients. When topped with a crown, implants can be brushed and flossed like your original tooth, and are strong and long-lasting. Veneers: Cracked, chipped, or worn teeth can be restored to perfection with ultra-thin porcelain veneers. It is about the thickness of a baby’s fingernail, and is attached permanently to the tooth’s surface, instantly erasing years of wear or poor shape. The possibilities for improvement are virtually endless. Cosmetic options are no longer for the wealthy or famous - You can smile with confidence!

Stuff If The Walls Could Talk Roundabouts
Travel
The modern roundabout is a beautiful thing. Traffic flow is improved, they look nice, and are safer than traditional intersections. Research has shown that while roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections, they also have the potential to reduce traffic delays by up to 75%. In the last few years, Albany has added a few roundabouts. Most people figure them out quite quickly. And others, well… have difficulty. The way it is supposed to work is easy. Drivers must yield to cars already circling the roundabout. Once a car has passed, you simply enter the happy circle and go on your way. Unfortunately, some poor souls will stop at the beginning of the circle to wait for traffic that is approaching, even though the traffic has not yet reached the inner circle. These people are called “Holders.” Now, the people that

If you are one of those homeowners who’s been moaning about how hard its been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power hasn’t been completely devastated. In fact, most buyers today are only interested in homes that are “move-in-ready.” If yours isn’t, that could be your problem. Buyers generally look at “as-is” properties that need work and say, “I’ll pass.” That’s why I tell clients it’s worth making strategic fixes if they are looking for quicker and more profitable sales. So, here is a list of “fixes” outlining which are worth it and which aren’t. Worth It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Example: Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. Whatever you do might not suit the buyer. Meanwhile, you could have spent tens of thousands of dollars. Stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors and save you visions of a modern-day spa for your own new home. Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpeting or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore.
Reviews
Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. This is the same issue as with bathrooms. Worth it: Anything that enhances “curb appeal.” It’s the first thing buyers notice even before getting out of their car. For example, if your roof looks like it has been whipped by a tornado, chances are you’ve already lost the sale. It’s a huge “turn-off” and makes buyers predisposed to finding things they don’t like. So, it the roof needs replacing, get it done. Not Worth It: Clutter! The less of “you” there is around the property, the more likely the prospective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there. A few months ago, cousins Severne Barth and Marilynn Zirgwied decided to expand their booth at a Battleground, Washington antique mall and open a store in Albany. Severne and her husband already owned a store front at 325 S.W. First Avenue which had recently become empty, thus, Red Rhinestone Boutique was born. They operate the business as a consignment mall, renting out spaces and carrying some items on consignment. The store is beautifully laid out featuring antiques, collectables, jewelry, vintage furniture, and various featured works by local artisans. People browsing through the store are amazed at the wonderful selection of antiques and artwork available for sale. Space rentals are very reasonable and provide those with items for sale a ready-made retail
establishment to display their items. Red Rhinestone Boutique is now a business partner in the Points for Profit program supporting many of our local non-profit organizations. When making a purchase save your receipt to give to your favorite participating non-profit increasing their year-end cash award. Severne and Marilynn welcome everyone to their store and will be offering special sales on many items during the coming “Antiques in the Streets” event in downtown Albany on September 12. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to stop by and pick up a new treasure for your home. Hours at Red Rhinestone Boutique are Tuesdays, 11AM until 4PM, Wednesday through Saturdays, 10AM until 6PM, Closed on Sundays and Mondays. Happy Shopping!

Adoption is God’s Option
Going
In a condescending and taunting barrage of words came the statement toward me, “You are adopted! You are adopted!” Cheryl was only seven years old at the time. She learned from her parents that her aunt and uncle could not have children; therefore, they had to adopt. I’m confident that my aunt explained what that meant to Cheryl. Perhaps she gave the Webster’s dictionary definition, “Adoption is legally to take another’s child and bring him/her up as one’s own.” Or maybe she explained the heart behind adoption in this way, “Your cousin was chosen by your aunt and uncle, and they love him no differently than mommy and daddy love you.” However it was that my aunt explained to my cousin my adoption, Cheryl saw an opportunity to use it in a negative playground banter to one-up me in the, “I’m better than you” game. The only problem was that I did not know at the age of five what that word or concept meant. The moment I was in proximity of my mother I remember blurting out the question, “Cheryl told me I’m adopted, what does that mean?” My mother, with a caring and loving embrace, explained a truth that would comfort my worried soul. “Kevin, your father and I chose you, and love you with all our hearts. “ I felt special and wanted. When I entered grade school, we would have weekly sharing. Most of the time, students would bring a pet, toy,

or some kind of odd object that would perk the curiosity of the class. I anticipated my turn to share. I didn’t bring a pet, toy, or an object; rather, I brought “me.” I stood in front of the Keven class with nervous Ferguson, excitement, ready Willamette to communicate the truth my mom shared Valley with me several years Christian back. “I’m adopted” Supply came out of my mouth like a missile on track for its target. I then explained that my parents were unable to have children and that they chose me when I was just born. Anticipating the question from my fellow students, I communicated that I didn’t know my biological parents, but was grateful for my adopted parents. I want to share with each of you that know Jesus Christ personally a wonderful truth. You are adopted. But I do so not in a taunting or negative, bantering way. I share this based on God’s loving and true Word the Bible. Paul explains to the Church of Ephesus in Ephesians 1:3-14, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious

Flea Control By Eric Glaze Albany Animal Hospital

We have been seeing a much higher number of cases involving dogs and cats suffering from fleas. We think part of this increase has to do with the relatively warm weather we’ve had over the last few years. We haven’t had a long freeze to help reduce the numbers of outdoor fleas that can overwinter in leaf litter and other yard debris. There are over a thousand different species of fleas in the world, but I’m referring to just one species: Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea. This is the flea that can make our pets lives miserable. What is frustrating is that we have so many quality products that are incredibly effective at killing the fleas, yet we still have problems with them parasitizing our patients. The issue largely comes down to understanding how fleas operate and complying with quality products, not generic store brands. Many owners are surprised to learn that their pets have fleas when examined by their veterinarian. The classic example is the dog that is chewing his butt raw and yet no fleas are ever seen. This is because this dog has an allergy to fleas and it only takes a couple of bites to cause a skin reaction. It’s actually easier to find

fleas on dogs and cats without flea allergies because they’re not constantly grooming themselves which hides the evidence. The take home point is that if your dog or cat is super itchy, especially around the hind end, there is a strong probability that it’s fleas, whether you seen them or not. If you do see adult fleas, then you actually have much for fleas in your environment then you realize. The adult flea is just the tip of the iceberg. Once the female draws first blood she starts laying up to a hundred eggs each day. These eggs fall into the environment and hatch out as larvae. The larvae live on the partially digested blood that is pooped out by the adults. Larvae die when the temp gets over 95 degrees so these guys like shade and shelter. They are found between floor boards of hardwood floors, in carpeting, under furniture, and of course in bedding. Our climate controlled homes are ideal havens for fleas. This is why being indoors only does not make our pets safe from infestation. When conditions are right the larvae then go into the pupae or cocoon phase. This is the most important phase when it comes to winning the war against fleas. Quality flea control products work to kill adults, eggs and larvae. No product,

Deathwatch By Robb White
My wife would not believe me that this book is appropriate for teenagers because of the tagline on the front cover: “In the desert without clothes, food, or water and hunted by a madman with a .358 Magnum.” Deathwatch is roughly divided into two sections. The first, main section is simultaneously a breath-taking adventure and a puzzle. Our young hero, Ben, due to unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances is stranded in the desert by a man who intends to kill him. However, Madec (the “madman” from the front cover) wants Ben to die of natural causes, so he leaves him without equipment, water, or clothes, knowing that Ben will die within a day or two ... and by following him around, Madec ensures Ben does not gain access to anything of use. So Ben must not only use his wits to survive the desert, but also to do so while Madec is upsetting all his plans. This is a great mix of the wilderness-survival Hatchet and the human-as-prey Hunger Games. (Note: this book was originally written in 1972, way before either.) It won’t be much of a plot spoiler to tell you that Ben survives the ordeal.

What is a bit unusual, is that Madec does, too. Thus begins the second section of the book. This section is a mini-mystery Scott story, because both Givens, Madec and Ben tell their tales to the Browsers Bookstores, police, and Madec is not only more and fellow convincing, but reviewer, also provides some daughter, evidence. Now, Ben Amanda must race against the Givens clock to prove his innocence (there is a dead man in the desert that each says the other killed). An overarching theme to the story is personal morals. In addition to all of Ben’s other struggles is the fact that he, as an idealistic young man, must pass through these trials with his morality intact. Robb White wrote over twenty novels from the 1930s through 1970s, most of which for a younger audience, and one of which was turned into a movie (Up Periscope, in 1959 with James Garner.) Deathwatch has just about everything a novel should have, including some cool natural history of the desert. In fact, it was so enjoyable that I’ve brought home another of his books: No Man’s Land, in which a marine toxicologist finds a sunken WWII subchaser that certain men want left alone....!

not even professional exterminators, can reliably kill the cocoon phase. It’s essentially a bomb shelter. This phase can persist up to three months before the flea hatches out as an adult. Hatching is triggered by vibrations, warmth, and carbon dioxide that we exhale. This is why it is important to continue to treat for fleas for several months even after you think you have won the war. And if your dog or cat has allergies of any sort, he or she should be treated with a monthly quality flea product year round. The other benefit to treating for fleas during the winter is it increases the chances of eliminating the population entirely when their numbers are the lowest. For the best chance of a victorious outcome, you should speak to your regular veterinarian and find out which products may be best for your pets and make sure that you are clear on how to give or apply the product. For example bathing your dog after applying a topical flea product will greatly reduce its effectiveness and
if bathing is necessary then you may want to consider oral flea medication that won’t wash off. Know that all cats and dogs in the house must be treated. And don’t forget about rabbits. The cat flea Ctenocephalides felis can only lay eggs if it is able to ingest the blood of dogs, cats, and rabbits. If just the itchy dog is being treated and not the cats, the battle will be lost. Also discuss various ways to try to reduce the number of eggs and larvae in the environment. There are several safe quality products that do an excellent job killing the larval stage. Sprays work much better than foggers because you can target fleas under furniture. Foggers settle on top of furniture and won’t do much to kill larvae under the bed, dressers, area rugs, etc... I have found that it can be trial and error in some cases and this is why following up with your veterinarian is so important. Because we can learn just as much from what doesn’t work as from what does work and adjust our strategy over time.

Though the tax season is over, tax scammers work year-round. The IRS advises you to stay alert to protect yourself against new ways criminals pose as the IRS to trick you out of your money or personal information. These scams first tried to sting older Americans, newly arrived immigrants, and those who speak English as a second language. The crooks have expanded their net, and now try to swindle virtually anyone. Here are several tips from the IRS to help you avoid being a victim of these scams: • Scams use scare tactics. These aggressive and sophisticated scams try to scare people into making a false tax payment that ends up with the criminal. Many phone scams use threats to try to intimidate you so you will pay them your money. They often threaten arrest or deportation, or that they will revoke your license if you don’t pay. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests, sometimes through “robo-calls,” via phone or email. The emails will often contain a fake IRS document with a phone number or an email address for you to reply. • Scams use caller ID spoofing. Scammers often alter caller ID to make it look like the IRS or another agency is calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legit. They may use

Oregon’s paid sick leave measure is now law and will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. The new law is complex and will be a learning process for every employer across the state. Even employers with one employee must provide sick leave, so all employers need to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and be ready to comply. Since this is such an important issue this will be one of a 3 part series that defines the each of the requirements employers must comply with beginning on January 1st which is just four short months away. There are 10 things employers will need to know. Enforcement: The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) is not authorized to begin issuing civil penalties for most violations that occur until on or after January 1, 2017. However, during 2016, BOLI will have the power to assess civil penalties and employees themselves will have the power to take legal actions against employers who retaliate against employees for asking about or using Oregon sick leave, or who count Oregon sick leave against employees in attendance policies.

Gearing Up for Fall
Business
What to plant September can be the driest month of the year. Remember the basics: Water in the early morning. Water the soil, not the leaves. Water deeply and occasionally, rather than shallow and often. In all but the coldest regions (Zones 5 and colder), early fall is an excellent time to plant perennials, container trees and shrubs, and roses. This month, however, it can still be hot. Do the planting on a cool, overcast, or rainy day to prevent heat stress.

Lawn Repair The best defense is to keep your lawn healthy by fertilizing and topdressing with organic material once a year. Mow your lawn correctly and aerate it periodically to discourage thatch buildup and soil compaction. The most important step in lawn repair is to deal with any problems as soon as possible so the damage doesn’t spread. Weeds rapidly will fill in bare lawn areas if you don’t populate that space promptly with new grass. Before you start, know that lawn repair is a two-step process. • Try to determine the underlying cause of why you need repair. Was it a fertilizer spill, pet problem, soil pest, overgrown tree roots, etc? • To repair lawn patches, you can overseed with new grass seed. In northern states, do
