For an Extraordinary move-in experience, follow these tips:

> 2. Every student needs to print a current Matriculation Sheet. Please print within three days of your arrival to HPU! For details on how to print see page 24. Tear along perforated line

> 3. When you arrive, go directly to your residence hall. > 4. Let the OC (Orientation Crew) assist you with unloading all of your stuff! > 5. Have a family member move the car to your assigned parking area. (We’ll have a shuttle there to get them back to your residence hall.) > 6. Stop by Security & Transportation at the University Center to pick up your parking decal. Please bring your vehicle registration in order to obtain your HPU parking decal. If you did not attend Early Registration, you may also obtain your HPU Passport at this same location. > 7. Hang up your posters and make your bed! > 8. Enjoy your campus, listen to live music, find your favorite quote or sculpture on the Promenade and enjoy your new home!

University. Some of the items included in the list are optional and are not necessary for “survival” on campus. Items that are considered essential are highlighted by an asterisk (*).

TV’s may not be mounted on walls Candles and incense are not allowed in the residence halls. If curtains are installed, they must be hung with a “tension” rod only. All windows have blinds. Please be sure that your personal belongings are either covered by your parents’ insurance or some separate form of insurance in the event of damage or loss. We also encourage the use of surge protectors. If you plan to bring a computer to campus, please visit http:// www.highpoint.edu/it and click on minimum requirements. 7:00am – 9:00am Continental Breakfast Slane Student Center and University Center 9:00am Opening Convocation Millis Athletic & Convocation Center (Business Casual Dress is required for students & parents) Students should arrive at 8:30am to Millis Center to be seated. This event is mandatory for students. Parents are encouraged to attend. 1 parent may attend per student, all other student family members will be able to watch a live stream from various locations on campus. Please see ticket info below. Tickets will be available for pickup on Saturday, August 17th from 8:00am – 8:00pm from the Campus Concierge Desk either in Slane or the University Center. Each student may pick up one ticket for a parent or guest. The following guidelines are provided for your convenience. Gentlemen: A collared shirt, dress slacks or khakis, and dress shoes or loafers are required. Ladies: A dress, skirt or dress pants are required. Jeans, flip-flops and tennis shoes are prohibited. Opening Convocation is the formal introduction of faculty to the incoming class of students. High Point University President, Dr. Nido Qubein, will be the featured speaker. This event will be heavily attended. To accommodate all guests, a live broadcast will be shown in various locations throughout campus. Opening Convocation, a long-standing tradition at High Point University, brings together faculty and administration to welcome new students and to set the stage for their education at High Point University. The ceremony begins with the procession of faculty in their academic regalia. A welcome and introduction to the class will be conducted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Comments will be made by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President of the Student Government Association. The keynote address will be given by the University President, Dr. Nido Qubein. With the Opening Convocation ceremony, the incoming class begins an exciting educational venture – a learning process that occurs in and beyond the classroom – culminating in the completion of degree requirements and the traditional Commencement ceremony.


Life is about new beginnings and worthwhile endeavors . . . new students will enter the hallowed hallways of this respected academic institution to learn, grow, and charge forth towards a better future. First chapel worship service of the academic year. The Chapel Choir will provide the music for this first service of the year. The Reverend Preston Davis, HPU’s Minister to the University, will be preaching. The Board of Stewards and Kappa Delta sorority will serve as worship leaders and fellowship hosts. The Religious Life Expo will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be served.

The first Saturday after the commencement of classes marks the HPU tradition known as Derby Day! Always a fun way for new students and upperclassmen to meet and mingle, Derby Day has it all‌ Field Day Style. All of the competitive games are held on Kester International Promenade, ranging from tug-of-war and volleyball to water slides, obstacle courses and much, much more.

Connecting on Campus: HPU offers many opportunities to meet new people, develop new skills or simply learn about other cultures. We know that successful students are involved students and the programs described below provide opportunities for students to strengthen their involvement as members of the HPU family. Faculty Film Series High Point University is offering students the chance to expand their knowledge of cinema with the Faculty Film Series, which features 20 faculty-selected films per semester to be shown on campus in the School of Communication Screening Room. Films included in the series connect with specific courses being taught on campus during the fall & spring semesters. Ropes Course at HPU Estate The ropes course provides an intense partnering experience which dramatically highlights the objectives of team work, cooperation, trust, communication, and adventure. All students will be required to participate in several academic testing sessions throughout the school year. The purpose of these testing sessions will be to evaluate the general education curriculum, student satisfaction and several other areas that are important to the operation of High Point University and the well being of its students. Further information about these testing sessions will be provided to you each semester by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

Students who have not attended Early Registration should take all online placement tests by August 2, 2013. Students who do not complete all required placement tests before arriving on campus will not be able to register for the courses that depend on placement test results (English, Foreign Language, and Mathematics). If required to do so, you must complete the placement test process before you can register for these classes. Matriculation and Clearances Information

Every student will need to print a Matriculation Sheet. Please follow the directions below. You will need to print this information within three days of your arrival to HPU. This will ensure that you have the most up to date information. You will also be able to utilize Smith Library to print once you arrive on campus.

a. Your advisor and their office location [many advisors have been reassigned following early registration]. You will need to meet your advisor on Monday, August 19 according to the Orientation schedule. b. You also need to check to make sure that you have been cleared in all of the following areas: Immunization, Student Accounts, Financial Planning, and Insurance. If not, you need to do what is suggested in order to be cleared for each appropriate area. c. If you have yet to register, you need to check your placements. If you have not taken the required tests online, it will be noted in this section and you will need to complete testing prior to registration on August 2, 2013.

THE UNIVERSITY DINING PLAN IS PROVIDED FOR ALL RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS. The cost of the dining plan is included as part of your comprehensive fee. As part of the online billing statement, you will choose your dining plan through your HPU MyStuff account. The following information is provided to help you identify the dining plan choice that best meets your needs. Once you have decided on your choice, log on to your HPU MyStuff Account and choose to view your online billing statement. Scroll down to the Dining Plan section and make your selection.

You may choose one of these four dining plan options:

19 Meals per week with $25 Dining Dollars per semester 10 Meals per week with $250 Dining Dollars per semester 14 Meals per week with $150 Dining Dollars per semester 7 Meals per week with $325 Dining Dollars per semester Seven (7) of your meals may be used as Magic Meals at any one of our dining locations. Shuttles will run each Friday at 2:00pm, 5:00pm and 8:00pm Shuttles will pick up outside the US Airways baggage claim at GSO on Sundays at 6:00pm, 9:00pm, and midnight HIGH POINT AMTRAK AND GREYHOUND STATIONS Stations are located 10 minutes from our campus. We offer a comprehensive shuttle schedule as a convenience for our students. Shuttles travel to the Piedmont Triad International (GSO), Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) and Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) airports for scheduled breaks. Additionally, we provide Greensboro/High Point airport shuttle service every weekend while school is in session. In order to secure a reservation, students should follow these steps: 1. Vehicle Registration Incoming students that wish to have a vehicle on campus must register their vehicle online. In order to register your vehicle for the 2013-2014 academic year, please go to the HPU Blackboard Community website (https://community.highpoint. edu) and click on the vehicle registration button.

To log in and register you will use your network username and password. While there, you should review the updated parking regulations. You will have two decals to display. The large one on the back of the vehicle and the small, front decal is now to be displayed on the top center of the windshield (so it may be seen from both sides).

Please bring your vehicle registration on Saturday, August 17 to the Security tables located on the main level of University Center behind the waterfall in order to obtain your parking decal. The Office of Information Technology offers services for students that need assistance with just about anything related to technology.

Once enrolled in courses, students will be given access to Blackboard, which is the course management software that High Point University uses to supplement the delivery of additional materials and resources for courses.

Each student at High Point University will receive a username and password that will be required to access a host of applications on campus, including Webmail, Blackboard, and MyStuff.

At High Point University, we understand that students rely heavily on technology for a number of daily activities, including their academics, communication, research, community involvement, and socialization. It is the mission of the HelpDesk to ensure that the technology functions when students need it most.

Faculty post materials, including syllabi, reading assignments, review questions, and website links, to each corresponding course offered on Blackboard.

MyStuff MyStuff is the central campus portal on High Point University’s network that gives students access to grades, course registration, housing selection, important financial information, and a number of other personal elements specific to a student’s academic experience and time on campus. Need to see if a class is available for next semester? Check MyStuff. Want to make a payment against a student’s account? Payments can be made through MyStuff. Staying on campus over Fall Break? Alert Student Life through MyStuff by filling out a campus housing request form. At High Point University, we strive to make the experience of the student central to our mission. MyStuff extends this service into the cloud and empowers the student to complete a host of tasks throughout the course of the year. For access to MyStuff, check out http://mystuff.highpoint.edu.

The passwords for Webmail and Blackboard will be the same. This is the student’s main campus username and password combination, and it can be used for additional services, including checking the balance on the HPU Passport card, logging into computer labs on campus, registering for housing, and accessing library resources. A number of systems on campus require the use of the default username and password authentication. For each system, the username will remain consistent. The MyStuff password is initially set to a PIN number. After the first login, the password can be changed. This password should be unique since the MyStuff account contains important personal data. WEB Security Students should be cautious of the types of content downloaded while on the web. Viruses and other malicious programs (known as spyware/malware) result from visiting certain websites, downloading software, plugging in portable drives, and often clicking on links in suspicious emails. At High Point University, students are encouraged to maintain an active anti-virus software subscription, which helps prevent these types of unwanted attacks.

A few quick tips for safe usage:

• Always make sure that emails are coming from a trusted source before downloading attachments or following links • If a file looks suspicious, it most likely is. • Peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing software, such as Limewire, and file sharing websites, such as uTorrent, can contain hidden malicious software embedded within.
